Friendly reminder if you come to Australia do NOT buy indigenous art souvenirs unless they are made by indigenous artists. Indigenous art souvenirs are a multi million dollar industry, where indigenous communities make no money from their own culture. You can’t go anywhere without seeing fake indigenous products, mass produced boomerangs and didgeridoos front every tourist location in the country. Majority of these items are not made by indigenous artists, are mass produced, inaccurate and stereotypical, missing the story telling and deep meaning of indigenous Australian art.
These fake pieces are more than just things, they are robbery of culture, it takes something deeply personal and sacred from real people, all so that the rich can continue to make profit. This successfully harms indigenous communities and indigenous artists, who make beautiful and cultural significant pieces that are discarded in favour for cheap mass produced items made by large corporations.
Wandjuk Marika describes this:
“Our art and culture are very dear to us, they embody the past history of my people, our beliefs today, and our strength to survive. Whilst wanting to protect ourselves and our art and culture for future generations, at the same time we are eager for all the world to witness the beauty and strength of our culture as expressed by our artists. To retain a jealous hold on our cultural heritage is not our desire, but we must realise our responsibility to safeguard this heritage and to ensure that Aboriginals at last achieve the recognition that is universally attributed to all artists.” - Wandjuk Marika, Yolgnu (Artist) 1975
If you want something really beautiful to take home with you that is actually Australian buy REAL indigenous art. To do this
1. Buy directly from indigenous small businesses, galleries and artists.
2. If an item does not credit the artist and you can’t tell where it came from, the it is likely fake or something that an artist did not give permission to be recreated. Ask what the artist was paid, the artists name and where the item was produced, if they can’t answer any of these questions then do not buy. An ethical seller should have no issue providing information on where the art comes from.
3. Look for businesses that are members of the indigenous art code. You can find them through the indigenous art code website here

not sure if y'all heard anything about this, but nickelodeon just cancelled this stop-motion animation show called the tiny chef. the show literally just won an emmy, but nickelodeon seemingly canceled it for no reason, as far as i'm aware. even if you can't donate, the creators are hoping to create enough online buzz that Nickelodeon will reverse the decision, so if you like bullying a multi million dollar corporation consider checking the site out!

So I watched the promo for the Sunrise on the Reaping movie that came out today and I want to see what other people think...
...does this look like AI to anyone else?
I hope I'm wrong and it could very well be stylized CGI but something about the lava flow and the tilt of the moxkingjay's head specifically, and throughout the video overall - it just FEELS very AI?
I do know that Lionsgate had a big panel at CinemaCon today and I could very well see them pump out a quick and dirty promo to capitalize on the current book popularity. Because this LOOKS very "last minute science project"
Again, I REALLY REALLY REALLY hope I'm wrong. And if there are artists who worked on this I will crawl into a hole in shame and apologize to you like it's my job.
But, I don't know. It feels...off.
And if they did. If Lionsgate did use AI art to promote a film based on a book in which the author SPECIFICALLY calls out the use of AI as detrimental to humanity... I would be incredibly freaking bummed and really concerned about the messaging and integrity we'll be getting for this movie.

Remember… I am a painter and printmaker. My practice centres on themes inspired by scientific explanations of natural phenomena. This I use as a tool to describe turmoil in contemporary life though a more poetic lens. The theme can be used as a force to ask questions, to stretch facts into fiction, and to visualize inner emotions. — Amanda Seibæk, Glasgow School of Art

not Pedro related 🫠
trying to build a career in the arts is v hard and while part of me is super relieved to be free for the first summer in almost 5 years, I am also super gutted! and I feel like a failure! even though I didn’t do anything wrong!
maybe I could have tried harder? maybe I could have pushed myself more? but I did that last year and I nearly killed myself doing it — my mental health was so horrific and my cards were maxed, I was clinically burned out and I am still recovering from that physical and emotional damage.
I keep being told to keep going and that there’s a place for me in this industry, and I believe it, I look at Pedro and think “it took this INCREDIBLE actor 20 years of grinding to become the popular artist that he is”, and I’m not even chasing that level of busy. (It doesn’t exist in opera lol)
but fuck these years in the trenches are tough and make me really think long and hard about. I love what I do, but this last year has made me feel less in love and more committed, like any long term relationship or vocation. the choosing to commit every day.
anyway, I got told to please fuck off for my final summer application/audition (for an opportunity that I was specifically asked to apply for) and now I am grumpy because for the first time in years I won’t have summer plans. and it won’t last and I’ll move on and maybe??? I’ll finally get to visit some family on the east coast and learn to catch lobster! do some things that I’ve been wanting to do away from the stage. run that 10k I’ve been telling myself I’ll train for, idk! something!
limbo feels weird and I need to vent. thnx u if you made it this far. go listen to an opera, if you can. support the arts! support artists!

Mosaic House
I just saw this on a TV special and wanted to share it (especially after a quick tumblr search turned up nothing).
The house belongs to Gene Dillard, who is also the artist. It is gorgeous work and deserves wider recognition. Still inages really don't do it just, so please take the time to watch at least a few seconds of the video.
(Link is for a PBS.org page with a video and should be available to almost everyone. Please let me know if it's not.)
