This post sparked great joy to see, got me and wife talking about how often I heard some of these and other phrases growing up, she encouraged me to add on to it. <3 So here are some Arabic phrases I heard sprinkled into English growing up! Na'eeman arabic blessing, etymology is difficult here. From what I could find it online comes from two words. Ni'am, blessing, and na'eem, a blissful mental/spiritual state. The -An suffix makes the meaning more like you're changed/transformed into this state. Family says the connotation is more like been cleansed or purified. You say it when you see someone freshly showered or with a new haircut. They're been transformed, purified, cleaned, so you say it as a compliment/blessing. Standard response is a simple thank you, "Shukran." Your friend sends a pic of their new haircut? "Na'eeman! 👌😩" Buddy comes out of the shower feeling fresh? "Na'eeman!" Someone says it to you? "Shukran." or if you're friends/family, "Shukran Habibi."

Haramat Arabic, no clue on etymology. Best I could get is kind of like "What a shame." Used when you want to express sympathy. "She has a cold, haramat." "Haramat, you deserve better." "Haramat, your uncle had to drive how long?"

Allahkareem Not entirely sure on the literal translation but means something like "God is Generous/Provides", said more like "god provides/provided." Basically used as a noncommittal maybe or we'll see. My mom says this usually meant no, so I feel pretty comfortable saying noncommittal. "Hey baba can we go to the store later?" "ehh... Allahkareem." "Can we get that leaky faucet fixed?" "Allahkareem." "Can we go to the movies?" "Allahkareem." Alasas Arabic slang usually translated as "As If." Literally "On the foundation of." This is used as a specific word to denote sarcasm. It's a tone indicator that's been around since at least since my grandparents were growing up. You can use it either at the start of a statement or at the end, either works, and it means you're being sarcastic. "Alasas he's good for it." "He's spent another $50 on lotto, he's gonna win it this time. Alasas." "Of course she didn't do it on purpose, alasas." "Alasas you couldn't possibly have been at fault." "I just love when the boss watches me work over my shoulder. Alasas."

i think we should all start using arabic words and phrases more often because its a beautiful language and also theres not really. english equivalents that have the same vibes

theres also the comedy potential of it. you guys dont know the joy of having your muslim friend text you "hopefully the racists in our city will all get sick and cant go to the protest" and you, as a pasty white guy, responding with "inshallah they get covid"

its a one hit KO every time. its fucking hilarious. theres no english word that has the same effect.

he also once texted me that he got over a mysterious illness he came down with (i think? i cant remember the exact context) and i responded with "subhanallah he is cured"

again, one hit KO. he lost his shit.

what im saying is we gotta normalise arabic. its just a language like any other, and it has some great words. its just like saying "thank god" or whatever, but theres so much variety and nuance. its beautiful

Something was prodding his back

Annoyed and half asleep, Rouxls pushed it away, hoping it would leave him alone.

It was persistent. Rouxls tried to ignore it. Maybe it would get bored and go away.

"...Lesser Dad?"

He groaned, arm going over his face. Please leave him alone. He needed his beauty sleep!!

"Lesser Dad...? Can..."

"For God's sake, Lancer, it's the middle of the night! What?"

"Sorry, um...."

...Now that was concerning.

The boy was hardly ever this meek, unless...

He moved his hand away from his face, blinking away sleep as he looked at Lancer in the dark.

The young prince's face was downcast as he stood beside the bed, hands anxiously clasped together. He shuffled as Rouxls turned his face to him, lips thinning.

Rouxls sighed.

"Come now. Thou shouldst be in bed, yes? Why are thee awake at such an hour?" His voice was gentler, no longer showing the annoyance he felt

"Can... can I sleep with you tonight?"

"...how come?"

Rouxls felt he already knew the answer.

"...I had a nightmare,"

Rouxls was silent for a while.

"You'll just sleep outside my door if I try to put you back,"

Lancer made a small hum.

This boy... Rouxls shook his head, a small frown on his face as he lifted him up onto the bed.

"Now, thou muste sleepeth, yes? And do noteth disturb me!"

The boy was lucky Rouxls was fond of him and the small smile of relief on his face.

"Mhm! I won't! Thank you, Lesser Dad!"

Rouxls nodded, turning to the side, ignoring Lancer wrapping his stubby little arms around his torso.

"...Lesser Dad?"

"Mm?"

"Do you think... Do you think dad hates me?"

Rouxls felt a small lump in his throat.

"...No, of courseth not," He wasn't lying. "Thy father may have... difficulties... regulating his emotions sometimeseth, but he doesn't hate you. That I'm sureth of."

Lancer was silent for a moment.

"Do you hate me?"

He sighed, turning back to face Lancer, as he gently placed a hand on the boy's head.

"Certainlye not! Thou mayest pester me like the little water beetle thou arest, but I wouldst never hate thee, Lancer,"

"Promise?"

"Pinky promise,"

Lancer held onto Rouxls a little tighter. He could feel the smile on the boy's face.

"...Thank you, Lesser Dad,

"...I love you."

...

"...I love you too,"
