Nephew didn’t want steamed rice and he asked for the Yang Zhou Fried Rice (扬州炒饭). We got him a medium portion (S$10) to share with those who may preferred a little more carbo. The savoury fried rice has got that wok hei (breath of the wok) and is packed with quite a few other ingredients like char siu, crab stick, peas, egg and spring onion.

Everyone loves fried chicken so we had the Prawn Paste Chicken (虾酱鸡). The appearance is not really Instagram worthy but the umami flavour of the crispy and succulent wings won us over.

Instead of the usual sweet and sour pork, we order the Sweet & Sour Sliced Fish (酸甜鱼片). Would have been nicer if the batter coated fish is still crispy and the flesh is too firm for my liking.

Cereal Sotong (麦片苏东) was a letdown with too thick a batter and rubbery texture. Sotong is Malay word for squid. My brother also commented that the cereal was on the sweet side and I have to agree with him. Maybe we should have opted for the prawn instead.

The Yam Ring (佛钵飘香) is deep-fried separately then filled with a medley of sautéed vegetables and seafood like prawn, squid and scallop. Normally, there would be crunchy cashew nuts added but I don’t see it anywhere and sis said the colour of the yam basket is too dark a colour though still tasted decent.

This Claypot Superior Pot (砂煲一品锅) is the most expensive of the dishes coming in at S$50. But is chocked with plenty of seafood like fish maw, prawn, scallop, sea cucumber and mushroom. The brown thickened gravy goes well with the bowl of white rice.

A large plate of stir-fried Sambal Sweet Potato Leaf (参巴番薯叶) is up next. The tender leaves and stems of the sweet potato plant is cooked with sambal chilli which give the vegetable a spicy kick.

The last dish of the night is this Salt Egg Prawn (咸蛋虾). Everyone was looking forward to it but it turned out to be the worst disappointment that night. The prawn fritters were supposed to be crispy but it came smothered in the salt egg sauce and ended up mushy. Moreover, there isn’t enough salt egg yolk in there so it is more milky sweet than savoury fragrant.

Compared to last year’s Reunion Dinner (团圆饭), the overall standard of the food at the restaurant had deteriorated a lot. Not sure if it is because different chefs are manning the kitchen or some other reasons but we have decided to patronize another restaurant next year.

OH. I think I've figured something out. For a long time I've wondered just exactly what ship really fits the lyrics of AMIT's 血腥愛情故事 (A Bloody Love Story / Xue Xing Ai Qing Gushi) [cw: flashing video] the best, because I like the song, and I think I've found it now.

The closest matching answer is... probably Light & Misa. Man I wish this song's lyrics were easy to translate or for there to already be an existing translation of the lyrics that I am satisfied with / that captures the graphic sensory imagery of the original lyrics, so that I can show you (most of whom likely don't know Chinese) what I can talking about, but I fear that I can't find one, and I'm not sure I can do it justice in translation myself either.

The music and lyrics of this song perfectly balances the blend of humor and heart in this story. The verse starts off kind of cheeky, but the emotions mount as we build towards the chorus. That line about Lin Qingyu donning his wedding robes again -- a scene that made me weep while reading the novel -- is like a punch to the gut. Thankfully the song and the story ends on a happy note.

This is supposed to be about a maimed war hero biding his time to take revenge on the unscrupulous enemy prince he is forced to marry, but thankfully the real story is better represented by this sweet ballad. Despite the trials and chaos of the main characters' circumstances, they find a kindred spirit in each other and a promise to build a peaceful life together after the war is over.

It sounds like a theme song for a wuxia drama, the song that should be playing while they ride off onto their next adventure together.

I'm still torn between feeling like this song is a bit too raw and under-produced, or breathtakingly intimate with its focus on the main vocals. It's written for a lost lover whose name is hidden in the lyrics and melody, a lover who doesn't know or believe in this, even though a part of him desperately wants to. This song is filled with the regret and yearning that comes out of such a relationship, vulnerable but hopeful.

(my family would call it tonyun, but I say tangyuan bc I’ve learned Mandarin so I default to that dialect for names of foods etc. I think ATLA just uses simplified Chinese and Mandarin so I would also call it tangyuan there)

was originally thinking Charles (modern AU) bc he’s best boy, and it would be cute if he found a place to get it from, or bought the ingredients so he and Phemie could try making it. Phemie would definitely take over.

Not sure Charles would be a huge fan since it doesn’t seem like his kinda flavor combo (black sesame and sweet ginger??) but he’d appreciate the nostalgia factor for Phemie

I think my only f/o who would eat them canonically would be Iroh. I’m still figuring out my s/I to ship with him and keep changing details but my most recent version is very culinarily inclined, so I’d be making a big batch to share with family ofc.

Just finished: 三嫁咸鱼/Thrice Married to Salted Fish by 比卡比

Okay, not gonna lie, I'm a bit disappointed -- not to say the novel wasn't good, but my expectations might have been a bit too high due to its immense popularity, especially in the English-speaking fandom.

The story has some very interesting and refreshing ideas:

A transmigration novel told from the POV of an in-universe character rather than the transmigrator

Three separate transmigrations into the same universe

Main characters who unabashedly prioritizes their own interests

And it includes many popular tropes:

A genre-savvy transmigrator intentionally hijacks the plot from the original protagonist

A "feel-good" novel that mercilessly destroys the bad guys and other people standing in the main couple's way

Main characters are very smart and competent (if a bit OP)

The plot is action-packed and tightly-paced

The main couple has believable development and compatible personalities

But on the other hand [unmarked spoilers ahead]

I don't really like with the way the relationship arc has been handled. The gong transmigrates into three different bodies; even though it's the same spirit/personality that Lin Qingyu falls in love with, their dynamic is a bit different in each body and identity. A big part of Lin Qingyu's relationship with Lu Wancheng is them grappling with his declining health and inevitable death, and his relationship with Gu Fuzhou has a period of familiarizing with this new body. They are so distinct that I can't see it like one single relationship.

It is especially jarring to see Lin Qingyu "moving on" literally the night after Gu Fuzhou dies. Because he has been through this before, and this is meant to be Jiang Xing's "true body", there seems to be barely any adjustment. Qingyu becomes intimate with the new body before he is done processing Gu Fuzhou's death, and I feel like it was too abrupt given how deeply he has bonded with Jiang Xing-as-Gu Fuzhou.

The plot also feels more and more implausible as time goes on. The schemes Lin Qingyu and Lu Wancheng pull off in the Lu Household can be explained away by them being ballsy and smart, but as the scope of the story expands, their egregious interference of imperial politics just seems downright ridiculous. I really enjoyed the first part of the novel, where Lu Wancheng's poor health and Lin Qingyu's awkward political position give them more of an underdog-against-the-power kind of vibe. However, as they gain more political power and the "protagonist halo" , their progress becomes so smooth it can't even be called a conflict anymore.

Overall

I would summarize my impression of novel as "did not live up to the hype". It has many refreshing and enjoyable tropes, a sweet romantic arc and a feel-good kind of plot. It also has good and effective writing -- I was in tears reading about Lu Wancheng's death. Ironically, it starts in a way I really enjoyed, but shifts to a direction I enjoy less towards the end. Not a bad story, but I just hoped for something a bit more spectacular, or at least a bit different.

However, the song from the audiodrama is a bop ~
