THE VENUE FOR THE FUNDRAISING EVENT WAS GLORIOUSLY MAGNIFICENT. Once you walked through the golden doors with your parents and Jungkook, you instantly took in the wealthy surroundings.

The open roof revealing the idyllic, cerulean sky, tall tower-like structures with spherical globes lined up like towering walls from every angle; the beige and golden walls beamed from the windows, lighting up the area whimsically.

Even within the perimeter, different leveled platforms were floating rigidly in place, some with growing and twisting trees, emerald leaves hanging from the branches; and below, there was a teal moat with mermaids and other sea creatures flowing underneath with elegance, in their own world.

Awe wasn't enough to describe how overwhelmed you felt in that moment as you wandered away from your family and to the golden railings. Peeking over, you spotted the waterfall cascading gracefully into the stream from a pool that was built into the normal ground level.

It allowed any sea people to swim up and mingle with the people wearing heels instead of scales.

This was incredible. You were lucky to be here and even experience it for yourself.

When you lost sight of your parents and Jungkook, you automatically gravitated towards the drinks table, finding it was the perfect filler for your loneliness. You dusted down your silk dress, and the different shades of green stitched into it.

Your mother had good taste, and you had to hand it to her to pick an outfit for you. Except for the mint heels — those were already killing the nerves in your foot.

This is why a drink was something perfect to cool down the looming anxiety and bury it away.

Breathing in, the scent of the open air intertwined with the salty one, the soft chatter floated around from around the large hall; you weaved around people to get to the drinks table when you heard it.

A familiar giggle and a deeper voice talking to her, making your stomach tighten a little as you turned your head to see where it came from.

That's when you saw Leerae, her peach highlights tied into the smallest ponytail and offering a wine glass to a taller male with dark hair and feline eyes—

Jungwon. All your nerves froze right there, eyes trained on them as he accepted her glass and gave a small, timid smile. You didn't need to watch, not when your chest prickled with something.

Something bitter and uneasy. You told yourself there was no reason to have any of those thorns growing within you, but the more you stood there, the harder it got to ignore the sting in your sides and stomach.

Jungwon leaned down to her height to hear whatever she was saying, and that's when you stared at her as well. She donned a pink and white gown, flowing like clouds around her feet, and hung from her arms tightly.

She looked amazing. As always.

Of course, she attracted the attention of Jungwon, that she could talk to him easily with her charm and words, anything to let friends and people fall deeper into her social circle.

How nice. And envious. When could you learn the ways to pull people into your presence without the awkwardness promising to interrupt the interaction? Holding in your breath, you gave it your all to ignore it.

You evaded them, walking to the other side and picking up a delicate glass of something purple and fizzy. Whatever it was, you downed it and let it burn your throat.

You recoiled slightly and put it back down with a grimace.

"Grape juice...? Really?"

There were many people gathering now, a few familiar faces like Sunghoon — who was talking with his friends — and Beomgyu (which you know is the Prince of Karunda) with two other boys. One was tall, eyes like a fox, black hair, and the other with blonde hair that laughed a little crazily.

Then, you spotted Minji in her blue gown, running to you with outstretched arms. You weren't ready for her, but she didn't care as she crashed into you unceremoniously.

"Oh my gosh—"

You laughed as she engulfed you, hands on your waist as you stumbled back. Glancing back at her, you saw the other girls joining with grins.

"You could have called my name!" You chuckled, holding her by the shoulders. She shook her head when she departed, as if you said something ridiculous.

Everyone looked amazing — Dani in something orange and golden, flowing down her figure; Hanni with her ruby and crimson dress; Haerin in something lavender, and Hyein wearing something turquoise. They looked as royal as ever.

"You guys look amazing!" You squealed, admiring all their gowns for the night and the tiaras or hair clips put into place.

"I was waiting to wear this dress. My father sent it over from Melody," Hanni exclaimed, twisting from side to side, and her ruffles swayed like air, pride shining in her eyes.

You and the girls complimented each other for a good five minutes in habit.

The evening went on with drinks and some laughter, and some quick glances to Jungwon, who was now with his friends. He looked amazing — a black jacket with golden prints on the fabric, black pants, and a black shirt underneath, tucked into his snatched waist.

Heat rushed up your neck and cheeks, finding your own actions ridiculous. You just had to be checking him out like a man seeing ankle for the first time. Why does everything he do hook your attention?

Even when he was with Leerae; if he wanted to hang with Leerae, that should not be your business. You're not going to linger over it like a storm cloud.

Auctions for magical artefacts were being talked about from one of the higher platforms, representatives, including your mother and father, all standing in the crowd with numbered pickets. It was also a trading and donation event between kingdoms and companies that represented their own planets. The host's booming voice droned on about the newest item for the fundraiser.

You, however, were wandering with the girls inside the building and managed to get to the top storey with a glass bridge extending to the next globe-like building. The view below was sickly if you stared for too long, but at least it satiated the boredom that bloomed within you and them.

Walking onto the bridge and leaning on the railings, you spotted the small buildings below, the evening air causing the ground to look as if stars had stitched into the windows. Clusters of light stretched on for miles.

Hyein sighed, tucking a strand behind her ear, pushing down the sheer, blue fins that grew from her scalp.

"I wish I could rip these off," she said, tugging at the fins by her locks. You knew too much of how it felt, and you chuckled.

"Tell me about it. These flowers are ridiculous," you remarked, picking at the white flowers that sprouted suddenly, and it dissipated in your palm. The other girls joined you and Hyein, a comfortable silence taking over.

The people below were as small as insects, the booming voice of the host still managing to reach all the way up here.

"We need to get back," Haerin said, staring out to the view. The girls murmured, anxious or excited, because it meant getting ready for the show.

You, however, didn't want to mess this up. Rehearsals were great, and you managed to clutch your magic, connecting with it easily. Today, you hoped it would heed your call and not drown you in humiliation.

"Five more minutes," Hanni said with a roll of the eyes. The peace up here was addictive and new, something to bubble you and the girls away from the hustle below.

"Of course, you need five more minutes," Dani remarked playfully. Hanni scoffed with a sharp look.

"We walked all the way here, so we might as well enjoy it. The view is too good to ignore," she replied with a longing sigh, dramatically placing her hand on her chest.

"It is, isn't it?" A masculine voice said, making your recognition spike up, your head snapping to the voice to your right. The girls, bewildered, followed your line of sight.

Sunghoon was walking over with a small smile, donning a white shirt, a cream blazer with something metallic hanging from his breast pocket. The broche you gave to him at his birthday.

Something grateful fluttered up in you, making your breath hitch, as if the sensation intercepted your lungs and heart. Maybe it was the way his eyes found yours almost instantly, approaching as the girls silenced themselves.

You could almost sense the mischievous comments on the tip of their tongues.

"You all look lovely tonight," he said, stopping a safe distance away from you, eyes fixated to yours like a magnet. Hyein scoffed quietly, crossing her arms.

"He means Y/n," she mumbled, causing Dani to elbow her in the side. Hyein winced, quickly rubbing the spot with a glare.

Pretending not to hear that, you smiled back with blush pink flowers sprouting above your ears. The shyness returned, landing in your chest whenever he came.

"Thanks. You look nice. And, the broche," you said, pointing to it. With a prideful smile, he patted the precious pearls and metal with sincerity.

"Of course. It went with the outfit."

The girls giggled amongst themselves and began to back away from you and Sunghoon, but you caught onto them by gripping Minji's arm, like a hook.

She yelped, but you just smiled at Sunghoon pleasantly. "We have a show to participate in. It was nice to see you!"

And with that, you absolutely dragged the girls and yourself away before anymore pink flowers intrsuively sprouted in your locks, leaving Sunghoon to blissfully smile to himself.

Everyone in the gathering stood in their designated areas, all murmuring and glancing for the show to commence.

You stood on a floating island with a few other girls with similar nature powers, staring down at the slight crowd. You weren't able to spot your parents, Jungkook, or even Jungwon. Scoffing internally, you told yourself to focus.

The lights dimmed suddenly, the night sky bleeding into the room. Everyone silenced and became curious when a small ball of light flickered to life at the platform hovering by the still water. It was Dani.

She smiled, lifting her hand to let the light stretch and travel over everyone, forming a shimmering and magical globe. Everyone gasped, but soon enough, Hyein made a ripple of blue shimmers weave with the golden globe, arms outstretched calmly from where she stood on another floating stage.

And the outcome? Multiple streams of rainbows and interchanging colours glittering at the open roof of the venue. Everyone clapped, more exhilarated murmurs bubbling into the air.

Not even a few seconds later, a melodic tune, sweet but heavy sliced through the talk, and flaming orange ribbon curled in the air quickly, twisting upwards.

The crowd gasped as a diaphanous orange dragon transfigured in the air, roaring boldly as the rainbows disappeared with a shimmer upon its brisk arrival.

Minji was in charge of that, her eyes sparkling with fire, palms glittering the same colour as her right hand controlled the movement of the dragon. She stood at one of the upper railings overlooking the crowd below.

Even from where you stood on the floating island, appreciation struck your body as the celestial dragon leapt through the air, going dangerously close to the cluster of people standing at the upper railings.

It was incredible the way it twisted, it's sheer body returning to the centre, just above your head, and curled upwards until it's body burst into sparkles, the remnants raining down like specks of orange dust.

Once again, applause rose from the ebullient crowd.

The show wasn't done as a cluster of magnificent, midnight birds flew overhead, circling into the venue's open roof, a sweet cacophony of chirps and tweets creating a refreshing tune. Leerae was on the ground floor, her arms outstretched as if to welcome the birds.

A few birds fluttered, their navy wings flapping to and fro, cheerful chirps sung as they settled on both of Leerae's arms. A smile graced her lips before she made a motion to launch the lovely birds to take flight into the open roof.

Another applause as you took a deep breath, harnessing your powers for the upcoming flower event. You were next.

The three girls you were with were first approaching the edge of the floating platform in unison, lifting their hands with emerald sparkles. As they did, vines grew from the ground floor and curled up the multiple pillars with ease and elegance.

The crowd gasped again as flowers with various colours popped out of the vines, decorating the length of the parapet of the second floor with exotic plants.

The girls all looked over their shoulder to you, and determination rooted staunchly in your chest. You rubbed the tips of your fingers together, taking a deep breath once more.

Don't mess this up, you kept thinking. Straightening your back, you let a pink globe forge from your fingertips, pulling on the strings of magic. Once big enough, you threw your hand towards the centre of the sky, and the sparkling ball followed suit.

At its pinnacle, it exploded into small, pink flowers that floated down onto the crowd like snowflakes. With that, a final gleeful applause broke through the crowd, and you let out a heavy breath as the lanterns rekindled with light.

It was done and over, and the people rejoiced. Just hearing the sprightly cheers eased the pressure of the apprehension in your chest. It was over.

When returning to the ground floor, flowers were still landing amongst the people, some landing on your shoulders and tangling in your hair.

Smiling to yourself, you flicked off the flora on your neck and went to find your friends, wanting to celebrate together over the success of the evening. You know your mother would be proud of the spectacle, and you couldn't suppress the craving for her validation.

Sauntering past a bunch of people, you spotted your mother talking to someone near the barrier next to the lake below, probably about business. You just about began to approach her when a peach blob caught your attention.

Leerae. She did great today, being able to talk to animals and fix the birds into routine. Being able to do it so easily deserved a congratulations. There was no point in being envious when she worked just as hard on the show.

With firm footsteps, you made your way over, side-stepping people with equal joy when it all turned cold and died out.

Halting in your place, your smile fell when you spotted Leerae. But, it wasn't just Leerae, was it? The unease and shock struck you like a whip, making you swallow thickly.

It was Leerae and Jungwon, her hands on his chest. And, she was kissing him and, from what you could see, he was reciprocating.

Something crumbled inside you. Joy? Composure? The awkward friendship? Why did this affect you so much to the point you couldn't move?

It shouldn't affect you. He wasn't yours, and you couldn't stop his actions. Even then, the tide that drowned you was strong, sweeping your firm ecstasy away until nothing was left but your frozen body in the sea of moving figures.

Your shoulders tensed, a million thoughts dappled with confusion, bewilderment. It was a conflict that you couldn't pick apart — a fight between your rationality and whatever your heart was declaring.

Ripping your eyes away, you forced your feet to rush away from them to go to your mother, wanting to get rid of the absurd thoughts that plagued your head. But you bumped into a solid figure, stumbling back slightly with warm cheeks.

When you glanced up, Sunghoon stood there with a hand steadying your bare shoulder. Concern flickered across his eyes, but you forced a small smile despite the crushing apprehension.

"You okay?" He asked gently for your throbbing heart. When you nodded once, he went on with an easy smile of his own. "You were great, by the way."

"Thank you," you said, but your voice was anchored by something, and he could tell. Again, those eyes flickered with concern, curiosity that you didn't want to satiate.

You couldn't explain that you felt embattled watching one of your friends kiss a dude — it was totally unreasonable. There was no reason for your heart to be twisting this way, so you forced a smile again.

"Um... I didn't catch you in the crowd," you began saying with a resigned tone.

"I don't mind it. But, I could see your dress from a mile away," Sunghoon remarked, eyes dragging down your figure appreciatively in the palette of greens and emeralds, ultimately setting your cheeks and neck alight.

Clearing your throat, you pursed your lips into a tight smile again. "Thank you."

With your curt response, Sunghoon let his hand fall to your lower back, the warmth sensed through your dress as he led you through the hustle. Your face was still etched with something perturbed, and he wanted to use that.

"What about a drink?" He said, leading you with a firm hand still latched to your lower back. Not able to really think anymore, you just agreed with a hum.

He was pleased, and you found yourself being swept away from the idea and vision of Jungwon kissing Leerae.

But the oppressive tides kept drowning you with no way to brace your cracking thoughts. They collapsed like sand.

Where the jungle ends, the reef begins.

The Metkayina live where the sea and sky blur, where the water is warm and the salt lives in your lungs. Their home isn't built on top of the ocean—it is the ocean. Their structures rise from coral, shell, and woven seagrass, nestled into tidal coves and sunlit shallows. The entire village breathes with the tides, changing shape as the day moves.

Here, the land is not ruled. It’s respected.

The Central Village

Built on and around a crescent-shaped reef shelf, the village appears to float from a distance. The water below is so clear you can see ilu swimming between the stilts.

Main Platforms – Woven mats stretch between coral anchors; soft beneath bare feet, singing slightly when the wind hits right.

Family Maruis – Dome-shaped homes made of thatched seagrass and driftwood. Each one breathes with the wind and sleeps with the tide.

Council Shade – A low, open canopy where Tonowari and Ronal meet with warriors, healers, or troubled hearts. Decisions are made in the open, but with weight.

The Ilu Pens

Closer to the reef break is a ring of tide pools and coral arches where the clan’s ilu rest, train, and play.

Training Ledges – Flat, submerged rock where young riders practice mounting.

Nursery Pool – For injured or newborn ilu. Tsireya and Ka’mari spend time here, whispering things no one else understands.

Launch Ridge – A drop-off where the older youth dive headfirst into the deep to begin their rites. Sowan once did a triple flip—nobody's let him forget it.

Brilliant sunshine beats down over the grand city of Nueva York. The month is June and the weather is perfect. The beautiful tall white structures of this futuristic skyline reflect the solar rays, like large white beacons beaming up from the ground.

Nestled amongst a collection of high-rise buildings, is a large penthouse. A home to a powerful man, not in politics, but in the criminal world.

It is the morning and the man in question sits quietly on the patio of his penthouse. The gentle sounds of the swimming pool lapping against the edges fills the air as a cool breeze ruffles his dark brown hair. Despite it being early, he’s already dressed in a long sleeve shirt rolled up to his elbows, waistcoat and suit trousers. He reads the news on a tablet under the shade of a parasol, his expression a wicked grin.

“The mega corporation Alchemax has released a statement reporting several employees have disappeared over the last few weeks.

They claim it began with scientists not coming in for work and now employees further up the hierarchy are also reported to be missing.

We spoke to Mrs Garcia, the wife of a missing employee from Alchemax…”

His peace and quiet is interrupted by a young girl's voice.

“Papa!” calls the girl. “Good morning papa.” The sound of the patio door sliding shut indicates she is coming out to see him.

He turns to greet her and places the tablet on the glass table.

“Buenos dias, mija,”(Good morning darling) he says softly to his daughter as his strong arms envelopes her in a cuddle.

She pulls away from her father’s embrace and puts on her puppy-dog expression with her big brown eyes, looking directly into his.

“Papa, can you come with me to school this morning? she asks sweetly.

Her father sighs. He has a busy day ahead of him.

“Mija-” he begins to protest.

“It’s you know what day and I want to spend some time with you,” she interjects, maintaining that sweet pleading face.

The man frowns. Today marks the fifth anniversary of his wife’s death. Five years his daughter, Gabriella, has been without a mother.

His daughter is the apple of his eye and when she pulls a face like that, he can’t refuse her - especially on a day like today. Gabriella will be ten years old in a few months but she seems so grown up already. He’s thankful she doesn’t abuse her power over him too much as he doesn’t want to spoil her more than he usually does.

“Alright mija, okay. Go get your bag and we’ll stop by the cafe and grab some muffins before school. Sound good?” he asks, raising an eyebrow.

Her face lights up with excitement, flashing a brilliant, white toothy smile.

“Si, papi!” she replies excitedly and runs back inside to go get her things.

The father and daughter duo sit together in a small black limo, at the back of a short line of the same coloured cars - all of which belong to him. They drive in convoy to the school.

He sits quietly, staring out of the window after eating the sweet blueberry muffin he had bought from the cafe he’s a regular at. Gabriella is taking her time eating hers, savouring every delicious mouthful.

“Papa…” she breaks the silence as the limo gently turns a corner.

“Si, mija?” he responds, preparing himself for another request or strange question. He can tell by the sound of her voice she is about to ask something unusual.

Gabriella swallows another mouthful of her muffin as a crumb or two tumbles down her top.

“Do you think you’ll marry again?”

Yep, there it is… He turns his head to look at his daughter.

“I’m too busy to look for a new wife,” he begins. “Besides, I want to spend my rare free time with you,” he continues as he gently nudges his fist against her shoulder making her giggle.

“I know papa, but I want you to be happy,” she finally replies before taking her final mouthful of her delicious treat.

Her father tilts his head at her response, his eyebrow raised.

“I am happy.”

Gabriella shakes her head gently as if she doesn’t believe him.

“No, you’re not papa…”

His daughter is right, but he would never admit that to her. He didn’t want her to worry, but it seems she already is. The man’s heart melts at her concern for his happiness. The last five years had been a blur. Losing his wife was a heavy loss for both he and Gabriella. After at least a year of mourning and processing her sudden, untimely death, he started to put his plan for revenge in motion.

Since his wife’s passing he did get involved with other women when he felt ready; but they were only for sexual relief and never considered them as a potential partner. He lost interest in them when they tried to use him for his money.

The man’s gaze rests on his daughter. His hand idly plays with her ponytail, wrapping the ends of her soft dark brown hair around his fingers.

“I’ll consider it mija,” he pauses as he ponders. “I need to find someone first, someone worthwhile - pretty hard in my line of work.”

The convoy of black cars pull up outside Gabriella’s school. The man gently grabs his daughter’s hand before she leaves the car, causing her to look back at him.

“Have a good day at school mija,” he says as he leans forwards and kisses her forehead. “You got your necklace?”

Gabriella pats her shirt, something lay underneath it against her chest and she nods with a smile.

He returns her smile and pats her shoulder.

“Good girl, you know what to do… I just hope it’s never necessary,” he replies as he takes her bag and hands it to her.

Through the tinted windows, he watches his daughter be escorted into the school building. Her question repeats in his mind and a frown grows across his lips. She must be lonely and in need of a mother figure back in her life. Has he been too engrossed in his plan for revenge? Perhaps he’s lost sight of the more important things in life? But he had made so much progress, he couldn’t just drop it and leave things be now. Leaning back in his car seat, he sighs and closes his eyes.

The window separating himself and the chauffeur opens up, disturbing his deep thought.

“Where to, Mr. O’Hara?” the driver asks, looking over his shoulder into the back of the limo.

The look of a doting father leaves his face, and out comes the mask of the stern and dangerous mafia boss. A dark, dangerous expression on his face.

“The Web,” he replies as he watches his daughter’s escort return to the convoy of cars.

He is shut off from the chauffeur once more and the collection of cars start to roll forward. The Web is his underground base of operations, a place where people who cross him are locked away, a place where those missing Alchemax employees await their fate. He pulls out his phone and begins to type a message to a contact named Lyla.

“Get them ready,” his thumbs type out on the screen.

You are walking down the sidewalk, several school buses pass you during the rush hour traffic. Carrying a coffee in a large cup you’re heading back to your car. A message from your employer you had received on your phone, told you to hang around outside the school and look for a convoy of black cars, without any explanation. After the bright yellow school buses clear, a squad of cars matching that description drives past your parked vehicle. The limo catches your eye most of all, however the tinted windows didn’t allow you to see who is inside.

Wrenching your door open, you slide in and place your coffee cup in the holder between the front seats. Your seatbelt clicks as it fastens after you hastily pull it across you. Starting the car, you pull out of your parking space and follow the convoy several vehicles behind to keep a healthy distance.

Pulling up somewhere quiet in the city, you watch the black cars snake their way around another corner, slowing to a stop. You don’t want to be seen so you hang back, in the shadows between the high rise buildings. Getting out of your car, you take in your surroundings as you creep closer to the convoy you were following. It seems to be a regular business area of the city. Many multistory buildings are full of people working away. Cafes lined the street, serving people their morning coffee before starting their regular nine to five jobs.

Before ducking behind a wall, you spot a man stepping out of the limo. His long jacket drapes over his shoulders as he strides into an alley, followed by men from the other cars in the convoy.

Sliding your phone out of your pocket, you begin snapping away, taking pictures of the man leading the small group of sharply dressed people who came out of the convoy of cars. Beeps from a number pad rang out as this stern looking man punched in a code. A door clicks open and the group disappears inside.

Stepping into the building from the alley, Mr. O’Hara is met with a lift with doors on opposite sides. The elevator sinks down into the ground once everyone is in and the door is closed. A ding pierces the silence inside the lift and the sliding doors draw open.

A well dressed, strawberry blond woman stands at the other side of the doors, waiting to greet her boss. She carries a tablet displaying his schedule for the day. As Mr. O’Hara emerges from the lift, she walks alongside him, keeping up with his large strides.

“Morning Miguel,” she greets him with a light and airy voice.

“Morning Lyla,” he starts, “are they ready to talk?” His voice is a low growl and his expression full of determination.

Lyla chortles as she looks at her tablet. Her footsteps are faster than his as she is over a foot shorter than him.

“They may need a little convincing,” she replies with a grin.

As Miguel continues to walk along a dark corridor, he holds his hand out as he passes another member of his gang. Tall, incredibly slim, dressed in a suit with big, black dreadlocked hair, the man silently hands Miguel a baseball bat and walks after him.

“One of them will squeal, I’m sure,” Mr. O’Hara says as he casually taps the bulbous end of the bat against his palm, an evil smirk spreads across his face.

Down a few flights of stairs, deeper underground, Miguel approaches a heavy door and punches another code into a number pad. The sound of a heavy bolt sliding away from the door means he can open it.

“Hobie, join me inside, Lyla, reschedule my morning appointments, I might be a while,” he ordered.

Four men sat on wooden chairs with their hands tied behind their backs in a wide empty room. There is one large cabinet to the right but it is locked shut, keeping its several nasty implements used to help encourage people to start talking.

All four captives look up at the two new people entering the room, with tired eyes and fed up expressions. Some have been there longer than others.

“Which one of you miserable lot is Mr. Garcia?” The taller of the two sharply dressed men asked.

Miguel watches carefully to see which one responds to his name. He sees a scientist wearing a grubby lab coat gulp hard as he is preparing to speak. Approaching the shaking man, he points the end of the baseball bat right into the captive man’s face.

“You?” he asks, raising an eyebrow.

Mr. Garcia nods nervously and winces at how close the bat is to his visage.

Lowering the potential lethal weapon he points the end to the floor and rests his weight on the handle, leaning over it and peering into the scientist’s eyes.

“Please excuse me for not visiting sooner, I’ve been a busy man gathering information,” Miguel begins. “It appears that I’ve hit a snag on something and I’m in need of assistance, Mr. Garcia.”

The lab technician blinks in anticipation, his breath faltering at the intense stare burning into his retinas.

“Do you think you’re going to cooperate today?” the mafia boss asks with a smug smirk growing across his face.

“I- I’ll do the best I can, sir.” Mr. Garcia stutters in fear.

Remaining in position, leaning his weight on the handle of the baseball bat, he begins his questions.

“I need a name. The name of the man who contracted your team to do some work five years ago. Ring any bells, Mr. Garcia?” the towering man asks with a raised eyebrow.

A tired, shaky sigh left the captive’s lips. He dips his head low before replying. 

“I signed a contract to not speak a word of what we worked on or divulge any information about who hired us - I’m sorry…”

Miguel growls impatiently and begins to slowly circle the lab technician tied to his chair.

“My darling wife worked in your team, remember her?” he asks, resting the baseball bat on his shoulder. Fierce eyes watching intently at the quivering scientist. “She too signed that contract and took the secret of the man responsible to her grave. Do you want the same fate, Mr Garcia?”

“Sir, my job and life will be in danger if I tell y- ah!” The scientist yelps when Miguel loses his patience and strikes the back left wooden chair leg with the baseball bat, knocking it clean off; collapsing the chair backwards. Mr. Garcia fell painfully in a heap, his tied arms stuck underneath him and the back of his chair.

“You’re in danger now!” the mafia boss yells angrily as he completes his slow circle, watching a groaning Mr. Garcia like a hawk.

“Next thing I hit will be your leg, making sure to break your femur. Perhaps you should reconsider where your loyalties lie, nerd.” He crouches down next to a shaking and whimpering mess.

“I know you have a wife, and she’s very worried about you-” Miguel is interrupted by the scientist’s sudden outburst.

“Please! Don’t- don’t touch her!” Mr. Garcia pleads desperately, pulling at his restraints.

A wicked grin spreads across the mafia boss’s face and chuckles darkly.

“Then I suggest you start talking…” he growls, standing up and playfully tapping the bat against his palm again.

“Kingpin! His name is Kingpin!” the lab technician splutters urgently.

The smirk on Miguel’s lips grows wider and teasingly rests the baseball bat on Mr. Garcia’s top half of his leg.

“What about his actual name?”

A fresh, desperate whimper erupts from the captive man’s lips.

“I don’t know! I swear! I promise I would tell you if I knew!”

With a nod, Miguel pulls the bat away. He believes Mr. Garcia. If he was Kingpin doing something shady, he’d use an alias too.

“Hobie, take this man, do what we usually do with the lucky ones, and then make sure he and his wife are under my protection,” the mafia boss orders, tapping the bat against his palm once more as he paces the room.

The slim gang member steps forward and hoists the shaking scientist to his feet. With a silent nod to his boss, he escorts a whimpering Mr. Garcia out of the room.

“Now, what part of all three of you shall I send to Kingpin in the mail?”

The solid door closes behind Hobie and Mr. Garcia, dampening the screams coming from inside.
