Toe Dipping Into View Transitions
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/toe-dipping-into-view-transitions/
Toe Dipping Into View Transitions
I’ll be honest and say that the View Transition API intimidates me more than a smidge. There are plenty of tutorials with the most impressive demos showing how we can animate the transition between two pages, and they usually start with the simplest of all examples.
@view-transition navigation: auto;
That’s usually where the simplicity ends and the tutorials venture deep into JavaScript territory. There’s nothing wrong with that, of course, except that it’s a mental leap for someone like me who learns by building up rather than leaping through. So, I was darned inspired when I saw Uncle Dave and Jim Neilsen trading tips on a super practical transition: post titles.
You can see how it works on Jim’s site:
This is the perfect sort of toe-dipping experiment I like for trying new things. And it starts with the same little @view-transition snippet which is used to opt both pages into the View Transitions API: the page we’re on and the page we’re navigating to. From here on out, we can think of those as the “new” page and the “old” page, respectively.
I was able to get the same effect going on my personal blog:
Perfect little exercise for a blog, right? It starts by setting the view-transition-name on the elements we want to participate in the transition which, in this case, is the post title on the “old” page and the post title on the “new” page.
So, if this is our markup:
<h1 class="post-title">Notes</h1> <a class="post-link" href="/link-to-post"></a>
…we can give them the same view-transition-name in CSS:
.post-title view-transition-name: post-title; .post-link view-transition-name: post-title;
Dave is quick to point out that we can make sure we respect users who prefer reduced motion and only apply this if their system preferences allow for motion:
@media not (prefers-reduced-motion: reduce) .post-title view-transition-name: post-title; .post-link view-transition-name: post-title;
If those were the only two elements on the page, then this would work fine. But what we have is a list of post links and all of them have to have their own unique view-transition-name. This is where Jim got a little stuck in his work because how in the heck do you accomplish that when new blog posts are published all the time? Do you have to edit your CSS and come up with a new transition name each and every time you want to post new content? Nah, there’s got to be a better way.
And there is. Or, at least there will be. It’s just not standard yet. Bramus, in fact, wrote about it very recently when discussing Chrome’s work on the attr() function which will be able to generate a series of unique identifiers in a single declaration. Check out this CSS from the future:
<style> .card[id] view-transition-name: attr(id type(<custom-ident>), none); /* card-1, card-2, card-3, … */ view-transition-class: card; </style> <div class="cards"> <div class="card" id="card-1"></div> <div class="card" id="card-2"></div> <div class="card" id="card-3"></div> <div class="card" id="card-4"></div> </div>
Daaaaa-aaaang that is going to be handy! I want it now, darn it! Gotta have to wait not only for Chrome to develop it, but for other browsers to adopt and implement it as well, so who knows when we’ll actually get it. For now, the best bet is to use a little programmatic logic directly in the template. My site runs on WordPress, so I’ve got access to PHP and can generate an inline style that sets the view-transition-name on both elements.
The post title is in the template for my individual blog posts. That’s the single.php file in WordPress parlance.
<?php the_title( '<h1 class="post-single__title" style="view-transition-name: post-' . get_the_id() . '">', '</h1>' ); ?>
The post links are in the template for post archives. That’s typically archive.php in WordPress:
<?php the_title( '<h2 class="post-link><a href="' . esc_url( get_permalink() ) .'" rel="bookmark" style="view-transition-name: post-' . get_the_id() . '">', '</a></h2>' ); ?>
See what’s happening there? The view-transition-name property is set on both transition elements directly inline, using PHP to generate the name based on the post’s assigned ID in WordPress. Another way to do it is to drop a <style> tag in the template and plop the logic in there. Both are equally icky compared to what attr() will be able to do in the future, so pick your poison.
The important thing is that now both elements share the same view-transition-name and that we also have already opted into @view-transition. With those two ingredients in place, the transition works! We dont even need to define @keyframes (but you totally could) because the default transition does all the heavy lifting.
In the same toe-dipping spirit, I caught the latest issue of Modern Web Weekly and love this little sprinkle of view transition on radio inputs:
Notice the JavaScript that is needed to prevent the radio’s default clicking behavior in order to allow the transition to run before the input is checked.

so, i have some thoughts. i feel like the game doesn't explore doey much, so i'm gonna take that as an opportunity to stretch him a lil.
in short, i see him as neither one whole nor 3 kids in a trench coat, but something in the middle of the two: a grown up who never really got to experience a proper childhood, the 3 originals in a blend with each other.
the time between creation and game events likely is enough for them to learn how to cooperate (up until. yknow). collectively or individually though, goddamn they need therapy
[ Description in ALT, text transcribed under cut ]
1st image:
point at head with teeth peeking: teeth may show more subtly, particularly when mischevious
point at hat: hat always at an angle
point at hand: stubby hands omg <3
point at neck: neck constantly bent in some fashion
Generally friendly and curious, may be more closed off and bitter if kevin is more dominant.
Collectively an adult due to passage of time and gaining experience, but still retains some more childish traits due to isolation from outside world and trauma, both collective and individual (holy shit do they need therapy).
Parts operate more or less seamlessly, but depending on situation some may show more or less of their traits.
When stressed, cooperation between parts may break down.
2nd image:
Kevin
present strongest when angry, most of anger processing goes through him.
not actually angry/cranky all of the time though, just a bit more gruff/edgy compared to the other two. tends to show teeth when talking.
over the years learned to control his rage better, can redirect it into being a bit of a troll w/ the others
understandably, safe haven's destruction made him revert and lose all restraint, resulting in lashing out, mixed with extreme emotions from others.
Jack
loved doey strongest before conversion (rip), as such expressions tend to default to his
learned to cope with constantly fighting for survival by cracking jokes and being more optimistic
present strongest when happy, may speak more childishly when in distress or comfortable
reverts into reliving trauma of death and family loss with safe haven's destruction
Matt
present strongest when focused on the leader role, strikes a balance between kevin and jack
through time learned to focus more on necessary action rather than allowing to succumb to past guilt
definitely still very stressed out from responsibility, especially after poppy leaving, learned not to show it through cooperation with kevin and jack
safe haven's destruction just plunges him straight into a guilt spiral
Note pointing at bottom notes for each: safe haven's destruction is a massively traumatic event for them, resulting in the three regressing into child selves from distress, mixed in with emotions from individual traumatic memories

Okay I know not all spiritual swords are as opinionated as Xin Mo, but -
Xiu Ya is the sword of Shen Qing Qiu. Shen Qungqiu's sword works for him even when he's Shen Yuan, a different person. Based on what I know, using a spiritual sword other than your own is kinda intimate, and may not work. I deeply enjoy the implications of this.
It could be evidence to the idea that Shen Yuan really is Shen Jiu with no memories of this life and memories of a past one. He might not remember, and he may act differently, but a spirit sword connects to your spirit. It'd know.
You could also use this for an au where Shen Yuan and Shen Jiu were brothers, because surely Xiu Ya would recognise Shen Jiu's brother?
It could mean that the system enabled the sword to work for Shen Yuan, but it could prefer Shen Jiu. There could even be a sword for Shen Yuan in the caves, never pulled. But people know Shen Qingqiu BY Xiu Ya, people call him the Xiu Ya sword. The system needed it to work.
Or my favorite, does Xiu Ya see this internally panicking, little hater of a guy desperately trying to survive as best he knows how and go oh, he's not quite the same, but he needs my help, too. Is it treating the situation like it was put back on the swordwall and immediately got pulled again? Does Xiu Ya grow to care for Shen Yuan as a weilder?
It could just be a sword to channel qi through. But Xin Mo isn't, and it'd be more interesting if it's not.

i firmly believe that even if shen jiu had successfully saved liu qingge at any of the points he'd tried to, he would not actually win liu qingge's trust or loyalty or friendship the way shen yuan did. because shen jiu is the type of person who'd sarcastically lord it over liu qingge's head.
even if he demanded nothing in return, even if it's just one snide comment rather than weaponizing it over and over, he'd bring it up later as a gotcha, guaranteed. shen jiu has neither shen yuan's humility nor his manic pixie dream shixiong brainworms to be able to say direct earnest shit like "let's have a blank slate and start over"

Thinking again about this common theme of like, Franziska being less of a "genius" than Miles. When like objectively it's just untrue! I mean she became a prosecutor when she was only 13 (in the same year Miles became one at 20), she only had wins up until Phoenix (just like Miles or her father) and she still feels like she's lagging behind, like she's not catching up. And no one disputes this! No one even tries to make her feel this isn't the case. I'm going to explode.

I make and use excel spreadsheets for my TTRPG character sheets, for the most part. I like the freedom it gives me to design the sheet the way I want and have plenty of space for notes. Plus you can plug in all the formulas to make it do the math for you, and the act of putting those formulas in yourself (as opposed to using some ready made tool instead) is a good way to learn more about the mechanics.
Anyway, I recently made a sheet for 5E characters since my friend is running Curse of Strahd in that system. We leveled up the other night, and with the use of my new sheet it literally took me 3 seconds to level my character. XD

I like that the armor that Echo wears after being rescued was already stamped with the CF99 skull. Maybe it was just a mark of who the armor belonged to, but it looks almost like it could have been painted on it a hurry, like the Batch was already saying "he's ours now"
On the other hand, if it was an old mark, it's kind of sweet and amusing to think of the Bad Batch as scrawny shinies wearing that kind of armor for their first few missions.

I think it was a mistake for s2 of Arcane to gloss over the implications of Amara and the Black Rose's deception in Mel's story because it fundamentally unmoors her perspective. Mel believed that violence like war could be avoided through diplomacy, and she applies that philosophy by maintaining the complex political environment in Piltover where every house is in some way content.
Tumblr media
In the face of the nobility's discontent with Jayce's anti-corruption measures, Mel sought to appease them to stave off retaliation. Through her lesson to Jayce, Mell didn't just help potentially enrich her colleagues but also the woman and by extension the organization that KILLED HER BROTHER AND STOLE HER FAMILY'S ASSETS.
Tumblr media
Can you imagine the horror and disgust she would feel at having trusted Piltover to be different? Mel thought she understood the game but she wildly underestimated the machinations of the nobility in Piltover. Mel accepted Piltover's corruption as a means to avoid violent conflict, only to indirectly enable the recent violence harped upon her own family. And the worst irony is that even though politics and corruption have largely been viewed as a cynicism game, for Mel this was an avenue she genuinely believed conflict could be avoided but in fact it was just more insidious.
Tumblr media
The opera scene was a lesson for Jayce in politics, but the effects should be the real education for Mel as she heads to Noxus. From what I can tell Noxus is in its pre-Trifarix but post-First Invasion of Ionia, which means Swain has his demon powers but he hasn't overthrown the emperor yet. She will probably ally with him as they're both opporpsed to the Black Rose's existence, however once he's in power he will alienate a large portion of the nobility as they root out the Black Rose's influence.
Tumblr media
The challenge for Mel (possibly as Guile) is to deal with these disgruntled nobles because as Piltover proved, you can appease them through corruption all you want, but once their ideology is truly set against you, diplomacy becomes a far more complicated balancing act.
