How I interpret Joker Persona 5

Since Joker is a silent self-insert protagonist it can be hard to get a reading on his characterization. He can make inconsistent choices gameplay-wise that clash with what was set up. He's supposed to be the righteous leader, and yet... you have the option to cheat on girlfriends, or sell your friends out to Yaldobaoth and become Evil, or doom the world for a selfish wish. It's easy to dismiss all that as 'not the true ending' but to me that would be boring and a cop-out. These are treated as equally-valid choices in terms of player input, so I think any interpretation of the character has to account for that. Like he is definitely a little unhinged.

Is Joker evil? No because he spends most of the game being a good guy and can choose to be a hero till the end. The desire to do the right thing is ingrained in his character.

So is he inherently good? No because it's coded into the game that he can betray all his morals. In P3, Makoto at worst betrays his team to protect them from pain. He never turns sinister the way Joker can in the Yaldobaoth-deal ending. P4 has an accomplice ending but even then you at least have collaboration of some sort, as opposed to Joker who is alone in his fall from heroism. The good ending being the 'true' ending doesnt erase the fact that Joker has the potential to go dark in a way the other protagonists dont. This is also a part of him, which I think makes him wayyyy more interesting.

So how are you supposed to reconcile all these inconsistencies into a cohesive characterization? Is it just 'out of character'?

Ironically, I think the best way to understand Joker's character is to first understand Akechi. If you accept that they are two sides of the same coin (and the game beats you over the head with that lol) then that means they share a lot of internal rage and pain about the world. It means Joker did not have his emotions together nor a healthy outlook on interpersonal relationships, at least in the beginning. It explains why a lot of Joker's confidants start out transactional. The main difference (asides from Akechi being more marginalized) is that Joker has the opportunity to respond to his traumas in a healthier way. He channels his rage into a good cause, and he can choose to do so til the very end (ie the true ending). It also explains how he can reach a breaking point and go down a darker path instead, similar to Akechi.

This is my preferred way of interpreting Joker in light of all the wildly different directions he takes in the actual game. It's why I personally like my Joker characterization as a little unhinged, a little dark, very emotionally troubled and evasive, AND very kind + empathetic to others despite that. He knows he's a little fucked up inside and that's why he's desperate to do the right thing. Joker isn't just good by nature, he actively chooses to be.

If you need any more proof, look at Maruki. He's the only other character that gets this much parallels drawn with Joker. But the ways that Joker's characterization can be derived from Maruki is a whole other post. I'll probably get to that some day, but it's interesting that when the writers decided to make a parallel to Joker for an extended story, they went with another unhinged antagonist that understands him on a deeper level.

forever thinking about royal’s bad ending. my thing with it is that maruki doesn’t necessarily give anyone what they want most, he gives them what’s most appropriate for them to want within a maruki-approved framework. iirc there’s a really interesting text sequence in the game where he just straight up changes someone’s career because they’re not “good” at it, regardless of whether that’s what they actually want. why struggle at all? ever? right?

and so ultimately i don’t think goro akechi’s greatest wish is necessarily ren. i think it’s a wish for sure, but his greatest wish is his own agency. despite any regrets he has and the fact that shido and yaldabaoth treated him like a pawn, he's generally pretty adamant about owning his choices and their consequences. he doesn't want that erased. and instead, you end up with pleasant boy™ if you take maruki’s deal. maybe maruki (incorrectly) thinks sanding off all of akechi’s rough edges will make him easier for ren to love. but the crux of it is really that maruki has to essentially lobotomize him to preserve the illusion of his perfect reality, because their ideologies are so diametrically opposed that akechi would spend every waking moment fighting back.

this isn’t to undermine ren’s importance to akechi btw — he explicitly acknowledges that he wishes they had met earlier, and there are countless moments throughout their confidant that underscore how much it means to him that they mirror each other so well. he absolutely does want more time with ren, just not under these circumstances.

and that’s also what makes ren’s choice on 2/2 doubly devastating. he knows that either way he loses akechi. and if he takes maruki’s deal, he loses him knowing that his last moments with the real akechi involved the two of them being unforgivably out of sync.

Hien & Benichidori compilation

Okay so I put a & but this absolutely a shippy post, the hienichidori community is quiet af and there is no discourse but their comics in their Adventurer’s Bible profiles…!!! Many may ask, does Benichidori canonically have a crush on Hien?! Straightforward answer: It’s left heavily implied but yes. Alternate answer: If the framing of Falin in an explosion as Toshiro says that he loves her isn’t meant to associate the explosion with falling in love when it is mirrored in the next page, then… I think it’s a mix of both, I don’t think just this is true because Hien wouldn’t know who Shuro is talking about or even what Falin looks like, but it could be that the explosion is instead meant to show a world vision being shaken, the thing blowing you away. So for Hien, having Shuro say that breaks this unsaid assumption she’s always had that they might end up together, and thus Falin is taken like an explosion to the face. Similarly, for someone with facial dysmorphia and for who appearances and being subservient are everything, having Hien be confident and totally assume her plain looks, even uplifting herself, that also shakes her world like a bomb. And yes it’s not just about the makeup!! Benichidori’s drawn to her confidence, to her unapologetic attitude, to her attitude. Benichidori unexpectedly snapped at Hien too, but she was totally unshaken and she replied casually and lightheartedly even then; Benichidori saying she can be herself with Hien is about Hien not caring about her mask, both her makeup and her subdued demeanor. Hien is canonically special to Benichidori.

And on the note of that comic, I took a picture from my Adventurer’s Bible for this but I think the fantranslations I’ve seen are lovely too, really gets across all the meaning of the original sentence… Where Benichidori said "She was the only one I could be my unadorned self in front of" (which is my fave) or "I’m able to act my honest self with her". Benichidori having body(more specifically facial) dysmorphia is explicitly stated in the Adventurer’s Bible btw.

Pleasee how Hien’s extra is her talking about her life story and Toshiro to Benichidori… How Hien says "That guy is blind!" and Benichidori says "I’ve noticed that 😊" as if saying that Toshiro is blind to what a catch Hien is… Also in the ninja girls’ shared inn room Benichidori puts her futon next to Hien’s bed.

i mentioned this before on my blog, but i don’t subscribe to the idea that the transformers follow humans conventions of gender. so when when ratchet learns about the nonbinary label, he’s confused. the idea of humans “two genders” already lost him so the fact nonbinary exists (as a gender, you’ve yet to mention the spectrum) befuddles him

“there’s more?” ratchet asks when you explain your gender: nonbinary. he scrunches his eyes—optics, you correct yourself—in what you assume can only be confusion. he crosses his arms. huffs. “i thought you humans followed a binary system.”

you bite your lips. resists the urge to look down to the floor, not meet his gaze. you know that what he’s saying comes from a place of ignorance than active malice, but you won’t deny that it hurt. to have the same rhetoric from your… friend (he’s more than that, your heart squeezes. your heart skips whenever he’s in the room. you ignore it) that you hear from bigots.

“some of us do.” you shrug, aiming to be unbothered. seeing how ratchet’s optics narrow, you’re doubtful of its success. “there’s people that believe that gender is a binary system, and it’s always been that way. but there’s always been certain cultures that had more than two genders. their history is just erased or ignored in history.”

“besides…” you close your eyes and take a breath. look away from ratchet’s gaze. you aren’t ready to face him, of the judgement that could arise. “even if that wasn’t the case, it doesn’t erase the fact it’s what i—what people are most comfortable being referred to. and that others should respect that. even… even if they don’t understand it.”

silence. there’s silence. then—

“…oh.”

oh god, oh god, oh god, he’s judging you. he thinks you’re weird and dealt and—

you swallow, your stomach churning. the talk feels unfinished: you desire to ask him about frame types, what they mean in cybertronian society. but seeing how he buries himself in his work… you don’t make that leap. instead, you nod along, taking the dismissal to leave the room. ignore the quickening of your heart.

in your leave, you fail to notice ratchet editing your medical biography in the computer’s program to your preferred pronouns.

Crossover au where transformers and monsters simultaneously exist. Not an undertale characters as transformers au, or vice-versa. An au where post true-pacifist, the monsters leave the underground only to find a new sapient species has arrived on the planet.

“Humans couldn't share the Earth with us, but they can with giant alien robots?!!! ...Wtf.”

An earthspark-like setup would work best for this, honestly. Just the “How dare” vibes on the monsters’ side, and the “You humans did WHAT?!” On the transformers’ side, with humans in the middle.

Also, the humans, whether through time or magic, completely forgot about the monsters. It would be such a spectacular shit-show! 😈

And don't get me started on the lore implications!

This idea has been rotating in my head for weeks, and I actually want to talk about it with people. So I entrust it to you to spread, 'cause I have like 10 actual followers, and I don't think there's enough overlap there for this to gain traction on my blog. (I'm asking on anon because I'm nervous)

YES ALL THE TIME!

I am pointing at Hiro specifically, who has an issue where his one fang is way longer than the other. When he was a kid, he had an extra long time learning how to eat without making a mess, talk without lisping, and just constantly be cutting into his lower lip. (And also he has the WORST time whistling, which is fun bc later down the line he turns the Hatake's howling sound attack into basically a whistling machine gun attack.)

His lower lip probably has some sort of scarring from it, but you can't really see it just from how the tooth pokes out to cover it.

Anyways like. POV Hiro is 5 years old and just bit into his lip for the 7th time that day and has to ask for a new bandaid

There's a bit of a variety in fang shapes in the clan too, like— you have Hiro, with his one fang too big. Then Haruka had a bit of a double set of fangs, the one normal extra big canines but then the teeth around that are also extra sharp. Then Tetsuo, who is half Hoshigaki, all of his back teeth are also sharp, along with his canines. Then Tsuki used to have the normal Hatake set of fangs but after his whole thing with the spiral demon, his lower teeth are now all fang shaped along with his canines. Man went missing for 2 years and came back with plastic surgery ig

In general tho, I think Hatake kids have an awful time with their fangs— though that thought goes for any clan with sharp teeth. Especially in the transition period of getting their adult teeth.

Quick Amanda x Rudy posting before heading to bed that's cliche as hell but whatever:

AU where Rudy asks out Amanda *before* he clones Rex. Still stole his DNA, but waiting for his clone to be processed/made. He just wants it to be worth it.

He's not expecting...much since yknow robot. But he still tries.

To his suprise, Amanda says yes. It's a bit...awkward to really do anything romantic, given how cold his robot probably is but she doesn't mind, even if holding his hand makes her shiver.

Anyways, but he tells her that she won't have to deal with him in this form for long, as he's cloning himself a *new* body.

Shit.

It's a slip of the tongue but of course that not not only implies that he's not just sentient AI, but that he also *has* a body. One that he would prefer her to never see, of course.

It takes her a bit to process but she's curious to see him before he clones himself over.

God knows...how, exactly, especially with likely years upon years upon probably decades of insecurities/worries/doubts and other feelings, he shows her right before his mind is transferred to the clone. So she wouldn't have to suffer seeing him for long.

Even then, he's expecting her to leave him. Why wouldn't she? There's no reason she wouldn't, in his mind. I mean she has every-

...then, something amazing happens. She hugs his tank. No comments, no pitying looks, not even a scoff of disgust. Just...just pure affection. He...he can't believe it. He shouldn't believe it. Why was he getting this much affection? He doesn't deserve this...but God damn if he wasn't overjoyed to get this amount of pure love from her.

Even after his orginal body dies and his mind is transferred over, that memory always pops up whenever he starts doubting their realtionship and he just...smiles.

HI GEIER IM IN UR INBOX AGAIN but in the hypothetical rare case of a corrupted geier unit, what would they look like/behave like?

But I mostly did it cause I have. Admitedly very mixed feelings on this design. I am having an incredible difficulty designing them and I dont know why. Mostly bad head space and I'll probably make a second post with the actual full design but have these sketches for now cause I find this idea very intruiging.

Disclaimer, I mostly operate in the general idea of Signalises universe having Arianes infection spread to other places OR other bioresonant sources causing infections around world forcing AEON to adress it.

Alright so Corrupted Geiers are insanely rare occurance due to their resistance to actual infection. They just don't go insane or get flesh growths or anything really while fighting off or being in proximity to infection. I understand Arianes bioresonance illness as her literaly corrupting reality so logicly, if Geiers do not bend under the song that flows through universe , they wouldn't suffer from these symptoms or ailments. Yes there are limits and depends on the situation but as a general idea. They are also paired in 5s in order to always watch eachothers backs when clearing out enemies. This is their primary purpose and always will be. The fighting off actual Imperial Bioresonants or even Falkes is a secondary objective that is experimental and AEONs kinda just slowly realizing the potential.

That being said of course things go south sometimes. Too many corrupted overwhelming a squad for example or picking of a single Geier. Attacking and damaging the supressor module is a decomissioning sentence for any Geier really but a Geier near corruption? It's like loosing a shield that protects them. Once that module is gone they are a normal replika (well not normal they completely spiral tbh but thats another story) and will succumb . It can also happen when the bioresonance is just. Too strong. Ariane levels strong probably over time would get them even with their modules. But they would last a lot longer and have their senses more intact than others.

Now actual Corrupted Geiers are fun! They are very easily recognizable by their either incredibly hunched over walk or even full on 4 legged walk. The vented masks take over their entire head, similair to Storches beaks , and have an almost constant smoke coming out of them. Sometimes if you are unlucky enough, you can spot small beady eyes flickering between those gaps. Constant heavy breathing perpetues around them, interupted with the occasional pained growly groan or wheeze. They're choking on the fumes and smoke inside them , the back of their throat literaly being fused into the tube going into the gasoline tank on their backs that is now fueled with mutilated flesh and blood that they feast on. Theres no real need for them to do it , it's a leftover instinct to clean up the dead , to burn it down and devour. It has the added bonus of acting as the fuel for the fire they used to previously serve the nation with . Corrupted Geiers are insanely resistant since they are built to withstand both their own fire AND an attack from Falkes. Bulletproof and heat resistant plating that coats mostly just their fronts now with flesh trying force its way out, bursting at its seams . The back being their only weak place, the flesh there fusing the tank with their back . (If this was an ingame enemy this is pretty easily the weakspot for them , shoot from back with smth big)

So yeah Corrupted Geiers. Not fun to encounter or deal with . They are a bit blind and mostly go off of sounds or quick movement but u cant run once they spot you really. Hope the idea's at least a bit interesting but god i need to draw the design way better.

And alsooo. All i will say about Geiers gestalts origins is that she is heavily connected to Blaus gestalt. It's just. Bad things happened to Geier. And Blau took drastic measures.
