Katara: long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony
Roku, who's first mission as the Avatar was trying to get the earthkingdom to leave an island that killed every outsider that set foot on it because his best friend manipulated him into doing it and nearly risked war with both the island and the earthkingdom:
Tumblr media
Kyoshi, who had to take down the biggest pirate clan in the world before even knowing she was the avatar, was chased after by someone she considered a friend, and after had to stabilize the earthkingdom from daofei and got involved in fire nation royal family drama:
Tumblr media
Kuruk, who had his spirit corrupted and died an early death because of all the dark spirits he had to fight because they were attacking humans:
Tumblr media
Yangchen, who had to stop a woman from taking over the entire shang system across four nations and had to face several combustion benders to do it, and also had to make sure the earthking or the chief of the watertribe didn't find out so they wouldn't try to use these people as a weapon, and lost her bison in the process:

"Gyatso is just as bad as Sozin─"
Why would you say this to a victim who suffers from colonization, stereotypes, having to watch around his surroundings being burned to crisp even his people and just wanted people to stop being violent towards to other people because it doesn't make any things better to an imperlistic, genocidal, racist, colonizer?? Who ─ by the way, possibly took over Lambak Clan and destroyed its beauty after Roku's death and made a negative impact on the rest of the world.
You guys make me genuinely SICK. For a lovable and life-changing show, some of you all tend to be too kind on the Fire Nation and terribly, horrid towards those who were opressed by the Fire Nation.
Note: Randy Ribay is Filipino. Philippines was not only colonized once but thrice by different countries. He had definitely poured all his soul into writing the story because he handled the subject with care.
The book is barely a month IN.

Man I bet on the inside she was so proud of him
Tumblr media
"The only mistake we make is not looking within" because after a while she stopped doing it. And that's when she lost herself, became someone her younger self would have been ashamed of.
And then she started looking within again, anr accepted that it was time to leave it to the next generation.
And now Roku is there, and he reminds her of her so much of her younger self - the servant girl with her hatred for Daofei and firm belief in justice, before things got complicated - and all she can say to him is "Find out who you are, and be steadfast about it. Don't lose yourself Roku"

It also should be taken into account that when she realized that she was about to go even more downhill, she stopped doing her immortality technique
Like, yes, Kyoshi did things she hated in the name of her duty as the avatar, but as soon as she realized that she was no longer seeing those things as wrong, that she was losing all her compassion for human life, she put a stop to it before she could become some vengeful spirit out for blood.
you know what, i'm all for people criticizing kyoshi's fanon characterization as a cold-blooded murderer. but i'm actually not that angry at the roku novel's revelation that she emulated jianzhu, because they kind of warned us early on that that was what would happen eventually
the kyoshi novels do establish that to some extent, kyoshi did see jianzhu as a mentor figure. whether one agreed with his methods or not, he did give the earth kingdom a sense of stability with his political maneuvers, that's why everything went south so quickly when he died. even then we saw kyoshi using techniques she learnt from his diaries and recognized the patterns she was replicating, which she was ashamed of, but saw necessary
she was a TEENAGER when she was struggling with her own cruelty for the sake of duty. she was always conflicted about it, but she knew it was the only way for her. I'm not surprised the issue evolved in a worse way when she became an adult
You do have to realize that the way the roku novel treated it and the way the NATLA adaptation did it is VERY different. Canonically, it's always been implied she despises having to be the way she is. Netflix made it seem like she enjoyed it
AAAaand it's not odd AT ALL that a person with the power of the Avatar goes through a despair event horizon. It happened to Yangchen. It happened to Kuruk. It happened to Aang, and to Korra. It'll most likely happen to Roku in the novels. These guys deal with a TON of shit, like, really gruesome shit, on a daily basis. If anything, I think Kyoshi going a bit nuts is quite in-character, considering in the novels she almost went batshit like 3 times at only sixteen. The issue is how this mental breakdown is treated. And if they tell me kyoshi eventually grew up to execute a lot of people to an unnecessary extent, hey, I actually do believe it. But I do not think for a minute that she's proud of it

Alright now this does not make sense here
Tumblr media
Sozin is supposed to be 16-17 in this book, bc this is only a few months after Roku left the Fire Nation to train at the Southern Airtemple. The comet is said to pass every hundred years. Sozin comitted the airnomad genocide twelve years after Roku died (hence Aang being twelve). If we do the math according to this book tho, the great comet passes when Sozin is 60-61. Meaning Roku is also 60-61 bc they share their birthday and -year. And it's known that Roku died when he was in his late seventies early eighties. So HOW is this possible?
Either they're retconning how often the comet passes by earth OR they're retconning how old Roku was when he died (meaning he would have died at age 50, which would mess the story up so badly I don't think this is what they did). I'm so lost rn and maybe it gets explained further in the book (calculations being wrong? Idk) but man it's not fun to see them either change stuff about things that are already canon or just get canon wrong.
Idk why they're doing this. It would be much more satisfying if this novel actually followed the show's canon, that we witness Sozin learning at which exact date the comet will pass, not that he finds an estimate and discovers the calculations in Wan Shi Tong's library were wrong (which I highly doubt considering that celestial calendar he has).

So like, if we're going by the "Each Avatar is trying to fix their past life's regrets", we have as follows:
Szeto - Only focusing on the FN and ignoring the rest of the world
Yangchen - Focusing only on the humans, disregarding the spirits (obviously)
Kuruk - Not having enough time, not having done enough
Kyoshi - Being too ruthless in her judgement and search for justice
Roku - Not being able to keep the peace between nation/stop the Fire Lord from starting the war
Aang - Running away from his role as the avatar
Interestingly enough, none of the mistakes repeat themselves. Like, once a past life learns a lesson, the future avatars act accordingly. No avatar after Szeto focuses only on their own nation; Kuruk, Kyoshi, Aang, and Korra all balance dealing with the humans and with the spirits; After Kuruk, each avatar has lived wayy past their 30s (well, jury's still out on Korra, but still); and, of course, after Kyoshi, none of the avatars consider murder as the first/right option, even to their own detriment
