Trooper: Trooper (1975)
Calm down Iron Maiden fans: this ain't your kind of "Trooper," but rather a Canadian hard rock outfit that arrived on the scene 50 years ago armed with this self-titled debut produced by Bachman-Turner Overdrive's own Randy Bachman.
Here's the backstory ...
Ra McGuire (vocals, harmonica) and Brian Smith (guitar) first worked together in a late '60s psych-rock duo called Winter's Green, but by the start of the new decade, they'd added bassist Harry Kalensky and drummer Tommy Stewart, and rebranded themselves Applejack.
The quartet eventually built a dedicated following in their native Vancouver and caught the attention of Bachman, who signed them to his newly launched Legend Records imprint, suggested the name change to Trooper, and produced this LP.
And a fine job he did, too, because the grinding "I'm in Trouble Again" was just about as heavy as rock got in the mid '70s and it made a strong first impression along with the seven-minute "All of the Time," which I'm sure went over like dynamite on stage.
Bachman's fingerprints are also felt on the comparatively bouncy, acoustic guitar-backed grooves of first single "General Hand Grenade": a nonsensical power pop confection that went Top 30 on the Canadian charts.
The similarly upbeat "Baby Woncha Please Come Home" gave the band a second hit, but the sleeper here, in my opinion, is one of the most '70s song there ever was in "Roller Rink," whose lyrics declare:
"I'm gonna go on down to the roller rink ... And roll my blues away. Gonna strap on a pair of roller skates; And roll …"
Rounding out the set, "Eddy Takes it Easy" showcased Smith's slide guitar chops, "Love of My Life" boogied on down with drummer Stewart on lead vocals and more six-string fireworks, and a cowbell takes us home (and, presumably, the cows) on "Don't Stop Now."
And there was sure no stopping Trooper, who graduated from Bachman's Legend to MCA Records on the strength of this LP's twin hits, and proceeded to enjoy an impressive run of success through to the end of the decade.
Their sophomore album, 1976's Two for the Show, apparently went gold, '77's Knock 'em Dead Kid went platinum, '78's Thick as Thieves double-platinum, and '79, Hot Shots quadruple-platinum!
Of course, this was in Canada and classic rock fans south of the border were none the wiser about Trooper's homeland success, or even their very existence, which I suppose makes the pre-MTV, pre-Internet era look like the fucking Dark Ages.
It wasn't, but for some mysterious reason, with the exception of Rush and, to a lesser degree, Triumph, most Canadian hard rock bands of the late '70s (Moxy, Teaze, Max Webster, etc.) simply couldn't get arrested in the U.S., and Trooper endured the same fate.

Legend: Fröm the Fjörds (1979)
It's been quite some time since I've discovered a 'Graybeard Metal' obscurity as tantalizing and, ultimately, as rewarding as Legend's Fröm the Fjörds (all hail the gratuitous umlauts!), which first appeared as a private pressing in 1979.
Not to be confused with any number of musical entities sharing this overused name (Discogs catalogs over 100 of them!), this Legend hailed from New Haven, Connecticut, and consisted of Kevin Nugent (double-necked guitar and vocals), Fred Melillo (fretted and fretless bass), and Raymond Frigon (superhuman drums).
As its title indicates, Fröm the Fjörds conjured up a prescient Viking metal vision scored to the castle metal majesty of Rainbow and progressive musicianship of Rush, so if citing those two bands doesn't have you racing to Discogs, I don't know what will.
Maybe mentioning like-minded near-contemporaries like Cirith Ungol and Manilla Road will do the trick, or perhaps I should just let you be swept away by epic sonic adventures such as "The Golden Bell" (of course there are ominous chiming bells), "Against the Gods," and the eight-minute title cut (which drifts into jazz fusion midway through).
All of these navigate the turbulent waters where '70s and '80s musical tides intersect, and yet it's the album's very first cut, "The Destroyer," that will henceforth appear in every 'Top Ten '70s Heavy Metal Songs You've Probably Never Heard' list I ever compile.
Almost as good is the sword-and-sorcery head-banger "The Wizard's Vengeance" (later covered by Slough Feg, its slashing staccato riffs tease the looming N.W.O.B.H.M.), and the trio show a sense of humor by adding cliche country-western bookends to the album's frantic, most conventional hard rocker, "R.A.R.Z."
And rounding out the set are a pair of instrumentals, "The Confrontation" and jazzy, train-themed "The Iron Horse," that further showcase the three musicians' astonishing skills -- especially Frigon, who lets loose on the latter with a full-blown drum solo.
Making all this even more impressive, Legend were active for an exceedingly brief moment in time: forming in 1978 as Judge (named after original bassist John Judge) before changing names in '79, recording Fröm the Fjörds, and disbanding before year's end.
Frigon and Melillo went on to enjoy lengthy, if mostly behind-the-scenes careers as session musicians, but the magnificently afro'ed Nugent sadly passed away in 1983 at the age of 26, though I couldn't find the cause -- anyone?
As for Fröm the Fjörds, it has since justifiably earned cult album status been reissued in multiple guises, including a another version expanded with unreleased demos like the frankly off-point "The Court Jester" and the somewhat better "Aramis, the Lover."
Oh, and the album's cover art provides some more trivia, as it was designed by one Ioannis Vassilopoulos, who later crafted the artwork for fellow Connecticuters (yes, that's a word) Fates Warning's The Spectre Within and Awaken the Guardian.
Legendary in every way!
More Castle Metal: 3 Inches of Blood’s Battlecry Under a Winter Sun, Ashbury’s Endless Skies, Behold! The Monolith's Defender/Redeemist, Black Cobra's Feather and Stone, Brocas Helm's Into Battle, Cirith Ungol’s King of the Dead, Griffin’s Flight of the Griffin, High On Fire’s Snakes for the Divine, Isen Torr’s Mighty & Superior EP, Khemmis’ Hunted, Lair of the Minotaur's Carnage, Yngwie J. Malmsteen’s Trilogy, Manilla Road’s Crystal Logic, Manowar’s Hail to England, Omen’s Battle Cry, Queensrÿche’s Queensrÿche EP, Rainbow’s Rising, Silver Mountain’s Shakin’ Brains, Skeletonwitch’s Beyond the Permafrost, Stygian Shore’s Stygian Shore EP, The Sword’s Age of Winters, Virgin Steele’s Guardians of the Flame, Witchkiller’s Day of the Saxons EP.

This is a very aimless ramble but. I am very middle of the road on the idea that Kaz could... Uhh, Retire, from the Barrel life. I'm not saying that he can't heal or whatever, (bc he can, will, and should, however long it takes), but I feel like removing him from Ketterdam specifically is like taking a frog from somewhere damp. He'll fucking die, put him back..... Like, I quite like a good few of the fics where like he dramatically fakes his death or has a whole second life running, or they go to Lij, or whatever, but I have to suspend my disbelief sometimes. There's a whole point about futurity here that I'm too tired to teaze out but... well, think of how many times Kaz says in CK that Ketterdam is 'his' city, and how he outright refuses to go to Ravka with them; and even after they've run out Pekka, which you might assume was what was keeping him there, he seems to just intend on experimentally creating and destroying, and making himself useful to and deserving of Inej. His future plans amount to 'fuck shit up' which maybe comes across as directionless, but also... Kaz likes stealing paintings and interfering with merch business and gathering blackmail. He didn't steal Van Eck's De Kappel because it would help him get revenge for Jordie, he stole it just to prove he could, and he seemed to find it rather funny to play dumb when Van Eck mentioned it. He has a lot of pride in the Dregs, as well, and I don't think he'd like to leave them in someone else's hands; he literally calls the Slat 'my house' when he orders Per Haskell out. So even though the removal of the revenge motivation might make him struggle for a while, I also find it hard to see him necessarily embarking on... a conventional and/or respectable life lmao. The dream he has during the firepox where he's looking through the farmhouse window at himself and Jordie, who won't let him in, says to me that he can never quite go back to who he was. Unconventional and disreputable... maybe more likely. (You know that SNL skit that's like. "My dad got me a pink gun. So there's a lot there." Yeah I can't help but think it would be like that 😭). But you're not getting him permanently out of Ketterdam, ever, imo. Retreating maybe a bit, actually leaving the Barrel life... Hm

so, leaving aside any "Heart of Innocence" as the entity itself,
what if the part of Lavi's soul inside of Allen is specifically inside his Innocence?
Like how the piece of Mana's soul in Allen is specifically located in his eye?
After all, Apocryphos unleashed an innocence to eat Allen up, but Lavi reformed the innocence around Allen with the helix to give him a new body, and then his new innocence arm.
But we know that early on the arm wasn't fully mixed with Allen's body, had a hard time syncronizing and all, and didn't really awaken until he had to face Mana and Mana cursed him on the eye.
Maybe the danger, or even the fact Mana cursing Allen added a new soul inside of him, was enough to "awaken" the innocence fully, but also the piece of Past!Lavi that was inside of it. And it would have shown itself by turning Allen's hair white, as it's then Past!Lavi's protection on him being made clear.
I always said Lavi=Heart because the Innocences around him started to act weird when he was being emotional.
when it comes to Allen, Lavi was worried sick when he left after Suman and was in denial about his potential death until they found the playing cards. This is when the innocence around Allen was protecting him like a fog and reformed his own heart after it was eaten by Teaz.
Then when Tyki meets Lavi and decides to spite him by sending Akuma after Allen, it's when Allen finally manage to reform his Innocence as Crown Clown, the white cape that is shielding him from everything else, protecting him, when Lavi was worried when Tyki was attacking him.
And then Allen's innocence evolved into a sword that couldn't hurt humans right when Lavi was vulnerable in Road's dreamworld, right before Allen had to fight him. It answered to Allen's desires, yes, but Lavi taunting Road about how "my heart hasn't shattered/been smashed yet" is supperposed on Allen having been smashed by Tyki and his innocence nearly shattered RIGHT before it evolves into the sword that he will later use to protect Lavi.
It could have nothing to do with Lavi being the Heart of Innocence-- but have to do with the fact a part of Lavi's soul reside in the innocence of Allen itself. Probably merged with the will of the innocence until creating Crown Clown, which has its own set of will and desire. But would also explain why CC doesn't obey Apocryphos or why it is more interested in mirroring Allen's desires. (i do think CC is its own entity in itself and not just Past!Lavi soul, but that Past!Lavi soul probably coexist with CC's own will.)
but it also means that therefore when the innocence reformed Allen's heart, it would mean Past!Lavi's part of the soul would be in Allen's heart.
and through CC he would be working to protect Allen, which is why CC's cape can shield him. This way he can keep the promise he made about "I'll protect you with my life"
Do you get the vision i'm coming accross here.
#also the fact Allen's Mana eye evolved around Lavi specifically to let Lavi see the world Allen sees#it could be a more inconscious way for Allen to connect with someone he shares a bit of a soul with#do you get my vision#ichatalks about dgm#ichablogging dgm#dgm spoilers#Ira mentioned how PAst!Lavi hair reminds her of CC and i dotted dots again#also that means i'm running with 'laven are soulmates' to say 'lavi is literally part of allen's heart'#which is another level of insane for me but hey#served me well so far!#ichameta dgm
