In the aftermath of the May 18, 1980, eruption of Mount St. Helens, ash fell across a wide part of the country, including at Mount Rainier. This ash formed a layer of sediment called tephra. Tephra is more than just a mess to clean up – it actually becomes an important part of the geologic history of a landscape! Mount Rainier National Park has been covered in at least 22 tephras from past eruptions of Mount St Helens, Mount Mazama (Crater Lake), and Mount Rainier itself.
Tumblr media
Each layer of tephra can be tied to a specific time period. This is a valuable tool in archaeology, since tephra layers can help date objects found in between the layers. Tephra layers have helped archaeologists determine that artifacts, including chip shards and hearth features, found in the Ohanapecosh area of the park date to over 7,000 years ago. Volcanic eruptions can be destructive, but they can also be used to reveal a long history of human use on the slopes of those same volcanoes.

Idea: Never be afraid to reverse engineer stuff when you are building a world.
The culinary tradition of barbecue in Tephra originated at Barbic University, an orcish hall of learning in the hills of the Shielded Lands. Though the main topics of study are astronomy, geomancy and biology, the students and faculty developed a reputation for the quality of their smoked and grilled meat, carefully selected from the herds owned by the college. Now, several hundred years since the University was founded, there is a food science program that has produced many of the finest chefs on the continent. And “Barbic U” style food has a reputation for being the perfect meal for the end of a hard day’s work.

do you think each hearthian plays a unique instrument, or can they choose? If they can choose and instruments aren’t hand me downs, when do you think gneiss stopped making harmonicas for good? Imagine Tephra’s choosing an instrument, never having heard feldspar, and chooses a harmonica buried in the storage cabin, years after anyone has heard one. do you think they kept making harmonicas to keep the spirit alive? maybe to give feldspar something new when they return? Or does half the village cry when they hear tephra practice for the first time? Who do you think would be happy someone’s playing it again, and who do you think retreats to their cabin for the day hearing it for the first time in years? Does anyone try to stop tephra, change their mind about the instrument? And which of the founders come running out of their workstation only to have their long dead hopes dashed again realizing it’s not them?

WHOA
So, obviously lots of Olympics have been in the news lately. Recently, I saw a picture of an athlete looking at a statue of Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, who is on the medals and generally seen as a patron of the games. And it got me thinking...
Nike is one of the major deities in the world of Tephra! One of the creators of the laws of physics and an inspiration to everyone who wants to improve and follow a passion, or to excel and earn glory. With that in mind, why not have an Olympic Games in Tephra?
Idea: every five years, the holy flame in Nike's foremost temple (currently the one in Kirohyne, but the flame moves as the priests compete for their patron's favor) begins to burn with a golden light. Athletes from around the world tend to prepare for this, but if someone is especially skilled and does not know about the tradition they may receive a divine quest to the temple. For a month, the priests host some of the fastest, strongest, and most agile people as they participate in the sacred games. Many events are divided into a magical and nonmagical trial - one where the contestants use only their innate talents, and another where they may cast spells on themselves. Using magical items or accepting help from someone not competing is not allowed, however.
The tradition of the Olympics (named after Nike's divine realm in the World Above) was nearly forgotten for centuries, as the reign of the Evil Empire prevented athletes from traveling to compete. While the flame never died out, it faded to a dull glow, and Nike is said to still bear a grudge toward the Imperial regime.

It's late, I'm tired, but goodness, these look alright. My babies <3
I wasn't planning on inking these, but the sketches turned out pretty well considering the circumstances, and I was able to lock in on inking them. I'm pretty happy about that! So enjoy them and take care!
