Just saw How Do You Live (Boy and the Heron). In short, it delivered but this isn't a review, we're chatting about a single animator. Avoiding all trailers I was surprised to see this opening scene:

That's definitely Shinya Ohira, I thought.

Often I wonder about the process of an artist bringing a concept to reality. Starting life as an idea, it gets filtered, drained and blemished through the process of reaching the audience.

When I see Ohira's scenes I become aware of my heartbeat as if it's synchronizing with his.

Though I first saw his work on Akira, this short from the Animatrix was THE ONE. I still call it "Ya Know, The Skateboard Kid" and people know exactly what I'm talking about.

Ohira's opening scene in How Do You Live was left uncorrected which worked with the nightmarish atmosphere of the sequence. I'd imagine bringing his work on-model has to be hell.

You're watching an anime and suddenly, THAT SCENE pops up. Kill Bill, Howl's Moving Castle, Ping Pong, you know the ones.

In animation, they want you to stay on-model, keep the show cohesive, but speaking as one that works in the industry, I want to be seen.

You're watching something and get asked, "Wanna see something really cool?" and you get this crazy animation flex. I want to see artist go wild. Gimme THAT SCENE!

I'd say you chose wisely. The calling-out option is not one with a positive outcome 😬 In fact, it's a rather foolish thing to do in that specific moment. (especially if you're trying to romance Narmer)

I probably won't be around to see it,but once the PJO show will adapt the final season for TLO,I just know that the viewers will have a cultural shock for what Hades will pull. The first season made him look like this peaceful silly little guy that the 180,once the show will get to that scene,will be brutal.

Tbh Callum betraying Ezran for Rayla could have been interesting if they had time to explore Rayllum's codependency issues and how fucked that actually was, but they just don't get that much time. It is dumb that Callum was allowed back on the council after the Aaravos fight, realistically nobody would trust him anymore.

And this isn't Callum hate. After Claudia, he's my favorite character. I just wish the show had enough time to actually explore what his betrayal meant and how unhealthily attached he and Rayla are (i say this as a massive Rayllum shipper. Only valid hets fr. I read rayllum fanfic, I shipped them from day one. I love rayllum. I just wish the show had the time to explore their obvious codependency and how dangerous it actually is. Callum defended the man who killed the king for Rayla - that is literally high treason. He defended the man who killed his step-father for Rayla. I thought we were going to get a Katara "you didn't love him as much" moment from Ezran and we didn't. I just think that this plot point really should have been explored more if they wanted to do it, but they were limited by the episode count)
