hiii Winter :3!!! could I pretty please get some Midwest emo album recommendations?? only one that I've listened to that ik you might say is sports by modern baseball :3
OH I AM ABSOLUTELY WILLING
I’ll give several suggestions depending on what you’re looking for
Sorta accidentally wrote an essay, didn’t mean for it to turn out that way but enjoy :3
Firstly if you want something more like Sports by MoBo:
Naturally their other album You’re Gonna Miss it All would be a great next choice, it’s my favorite album by them and feels like a more polished version of Sports
Another great album with similar vibes is Joy, Departed by Sorority Noise. One of my all time top 5 emo albums has similar vibes to Sports but to me hits even harder emotionally as well as having more diverse instrumentation.
Finally in this category I would recommend Talon of the Hawk by The Front Bottoms, while not strictly emo it is an excellent record and absolutely worth a listen
Next category is gonna be iconic records many people would consider “must listens”
Firstly, American Football’s first self titled LP. This is like THE Midwest emo albums. Didn’t create the genre but absolutely showed what it really could be. Absolutely immaculate vibes
Speaking of creating the genre the band often credited with this is Cap’n Jazz and their first album Schmap’n Schmazz is highly acclaimed and while I don’t listen to it often I have an incredible respect for it.
Last while I haven’t listened to it yet I have heard nothing but incredible things about Sunny Day Real Estate’s album. It’s been at the top of my list to listen to for ages and is often considered a quintessential emo album
Then one of my favorite branches of emo is emo post rock.
Here I’ll share three albums with the first one being the most traditional Midwest emo with the last one leaning much more towards post rock but still with obvious emo influence
Firstly is Whenever, If Ever by The World is a Beautiful Place & I am No Longer Afraid to Die. The bands first full length EP and an absolutely incredible work. The shortest and most traditional emo of the three albums in this category but still a phenomenal listen and the album
Another wonderful album from the same band is Harmlessness. Generally considered their best album it really is the perfect mix of the heart wrenching lyrics and sparkliness of midwest emo and the giant introspective sounds of post rock
The most experimental and post rock album from this section is Tell Me About The Long Dark Path Home from Newfound Interest in Connecticut. Very heavily a post rock album however there is a heavy influence from emo in both the songwriting and vocal sound
Next category will be bedroom skramz/lo-fi emo
Unfortunately due to its raw unprocessed sound this isn’t for everyone but it’s been one of my favorite sub-genres lately
Firstly Come In by Weatherday is an absolute masterpiece of an album. Perfectly encapsulates both everything a good lo-fi album is and everything a good emo album is. While it doesn’t incorporate any skramz elements it is one of my top 10 albums of all time and has massively influenced me
Next a record I’ve been obsessed with lately is Poorly Wrote Suicide Note’s second album pwsn ii. While their first album has higher acclaim and is more known I vastly prefer the first album as it has a much more diverse sound and is overall a more interesting listen, doing an incredible job to improve upon the solid foundation set by the first
Departmefrombearisland is an artist with a very small discography and is a more known artist in the bedroom skramz scene but all their work is excellent and I would recommend giving it a listen. I have compiled all their work here
Final proper category is gonna be more high energy stuff that’s still very distinctly Midwest emo
First a huge shift from everything else here is Doppelgänger by The Fall of Troy. To be honest this just isn’t a Midwest emo album however it very much has the vibes especially lyrically. They’re an intense high energy mathcore band and I listen to this album all the time
Next a band I’ve been obsessed with lately is Arcadia Grey. I can’t just pick one album from them so here I’m including both Casually Crashing and Konami Code. Both albums are wonderful for different reasons and their recent single “Her Name Engraved” is one of my favorite songs ever
And now I want to include some honorable mentions of other albums I couldn’t fit anywhere else on this list but still love dearly
First a few EPs that are excellent are Silly Songs for a Silly Girl - Empty Parking Lot, LOTUS - blankslate, Never Mind, Princess Pavement - June Henry, Double Bind - EMWAY?, and there is no montauk - Flight Patterns love all of these but because of their length they don’t warrant their own review
A friend of mine @razz-is-queer put out an excellent acoustic Midwest emo album under the name Orange Moon called Mirror Lake. It’s a beautiful record and I’m honored to know the creator
My very favorite underground band Echinacea is an emo shoegaze tranny band with an incredible sound. Is It Too Much to Ask is not just an amaxing eno album but an amazing shoegaze album too
While these both could’ve fit in the first category I didn’t want it to get bloated and they’re relatively small so I’m throwing them here Flight Patterns self titled album and yhitopifah by Robo Pumpkin are two albums I absolutely adore and listen to regularly
Honestly just throwing TWIABP’s whole discography down here, they’re probably my favorite emo band and they haven’t put out anything bad (besides always foreign) every last album EP and split is worth a listen
Not emo at all however Panchiko’s album D>E>A>T>H>M>E>T>A>L is incredible and if you like the stuff from this list I’m sure you’ll enjoy it as well. It also has some incredible history behind it I strongly suggest looking into
If you made it this far thank you so much for letting me YAP lemme know what you liked and feel free to reblog and add any of your favorite albums I didn’t mention!
