piecing together an extremely rough pre-canon Gintama timeline cross referencing actual events of the Bakufu period
obv disclaimer: i'm only at ep 263 or so, so there are big gaps in my knowledge, and I haven't looked any of the Gintama stuff up to stay spoiler free, so forgive any inaccuracies. Also historical inaccuracies, because I'm researching some of this on the fly. Please no spoilers if I'm wrong!!
Also, the events of Gintama aren't 1 for 1 the same as those of the Bakufu, so there will necessarily be variation
1853-1854: Commodore Perry's "Black Ships" arrive in Edo Bay; the Treaty of Kanagawa is negotiated between Japan (via the Shogun) and the US, effectively ending the Sakoku isolationist foreign policy instilled since 1603.
We can probably assume the first Amanto landed in Edo at the same point in time.
In 1854, Yoshida Shoin (Shoyo's real life counterpart) tried to stow away on an American ship to learn Western tactics. He was arrested, and released in 1856, wherein he opened Shoka Sonjuku - a radical anti-Shogunate school
1853: Tokugawa Nariaki, a daimyo who ruled the Mito domain (modern day Ibaraki) wrote a document inspired by the writings of Aizawa Seishisai, whose works inspired the anti-Shogunate movement. "Japan: Reject the Westerner" inspired the Emperor's later edict, the 'order to expel barbarians'
The roots of GIntama's sonnō jōi movement are likely the same.
1854-1856: the Ansei Treaties are negotiated, culminating in the signing in 1858 of five treaties of commerce between Japan and other nations. These treaties were largely imposed upon Japan and were considered unfairly weighted in favour of the West. This was an inciting incident in increased anti-Shogunate sentiment.
Again, we can probably assume a similar trajectory with the Amanto.
1856: Yoshida Shoin opens Shoka Sonjuku. Takasugi Shinsaku becomes one of his most prized students.
the real life Takasugi would've been around 17 here, so either Shoyo opens Shoka Sonjuku a little later in Gintama, or Takasugi is just a lot younger. I'd bet on the former because iirc Shoyo finds Gintoki first, then opens the school - and since Gintoki was found on the battlefield he was probably orphaned either by a cholera epidemic, which was brought to Japan by Western ships, or through some other conflict (which we'll get to)
1858-1860: The Ansei Purge takes place. A crackdown against dissidents and rebels, the Shogunate, led by Ii Naosuke, targeted daimyos and intellectuals who questioned the Shogunate's authority. Shoin is executed in 1859 as part of the purge.
We know the Kansei Purge is Gintama's equivalent. It probably takes place a little later in Gintama's universe, since there were armed conflicts preceding it - either that or there were armed conflicts in Gintama's timeline with no neat analogue in the real world. This seems likely - the Joui war participated in by Gintoki and co seems analogous to the Boshin War, but it's implied in Gintama that the war lasted 10 years - the Boshin War was only 1 year and spelled the end of the Bakufu. We can probably assume, then, that the Joui war spanned the period of time between Gintama equivalent 1859-1869 - and the Kansei purge happens in the midst of all of this.
1862: the Tosa Loyalist Party is started by Takechi Hanpeita working under the sonnō jōi philosophy. Ryoma Sakamoto participates, but eventually becomes disillusioned and leaves Tosa to become a ronin. His sister commits seppuku in despair.
We can probably assume Sakamoto's family (probably his dad) was part of this movement, and was likely why Sakamoto joined the war despite being a self-confessed pacifist
1863: Emperor Komei issues his edict to expel the barbarians. the the sonnō jōi movement quickly gains steam, and attacks against the Shogunate and foreigners, often perpetrated by pro-joi ronin, increase in number.
Takasugi Shinsaku founds the Kiheitai, a volunteer militia mostly from the Choshu Domain.
The Shinsengumi are founded in Kyoto by Matsudaira Katamori.
In Gintama, it seems the Shinsegumi were formed as a peacekeeping force post-war, so the timelines are different here.
1864: the Mito rebellion, the Kinmon incident and the First Choshu Expedition take place - all skirmishes between Shogunate loyalists and Sonno Joi rebels. The First Choshu Expedition was a nominal Bakufu victory - the belligerents were from what is now Yamaguchi Prefecture.
The Mito Rebellion saw forces from modern day Ibaraki defeat a shogunate force of 6700 with just 2000 insurgents. They were forced to surrender to the Bakufu after their numbers dwindled; a large number were executed.
The Kinmon Incident was a rebellion by the Sonno Joi forces of the Choshu Domain against the Shogunate. Their defeat was the catalyst for the First Choshu Expedition.
Also in 1864 was the Ikedaya Incident - a skirmish between sonno joi ronin (including Katsura Kogoro) and the Shinsegumi (led by Kondo Isami)
1865-1866: The Second Choshu Expedition saw the Bakufu defeated and was considered to have sealed the fate of the Tokugawa shogunate. The following years were the steady decline of the Bakufu.
Obviously in Gintama the Bakufu are still very much in place - so the timelines here played out differently.
1867: Emperor Meiji ascends the throne. Ryoma Sakamoto is assassinated in Kyoto. The Shinsengumi are blamed, and Kondo Isami is executed on this charge.
Obviously Sakamoto and Kondo are still alive, so we can disregard this!
1868-1869: an alliance of samurai from Western Japan (mainly Choshu, Satsuma and Tosa) secure control of Emperor Meiji's court. The shogun in power abdicates and hands over political power to the emperor. This kickstarts the Boshin War, a year and a half of conflict between the Imperial Court and the Shogunate, including the Shinsengumi. The Shogunate loyalists retreat to Ezo (now Hokkaido) where forces including Hijikata Toshizou found the Republic of Ezo, at least until their defeat at the Battle of Hakodate. 8,200 men (and women - the onna-bugeisha also fought) were killed and 5000+ wounded.
Ultimately, the Shogunate is defeated and the Meiji Restoration begins.
This is likely the last stand fought by the Joui 4, and probably lasted a similar amount of time - with Sakamoto joining sometime in the early months (?) (still not sure how or when he gets there). At some point during this time, Shoyo is killed. Presumably when the war ends, the 4 go their separate ways - Sakamoto into space (iirc he leaves earlier than the others?) Takasugi forms the Kiheitai, Zura continues fighting alongside the remnants of the Joi movement, and Gintoki goes to Edo.

TMNT: THE LAST RONIN II: RE-EVOLUTION #5
APRIL 2025 By Tom Waltz, Kevin Eastman , Esau & Isaac Escorza, Ben Bishop, Luis Antonio Delgado, and Shawn Lee.
The Turtles and the resistance must defend their island... but a sequel surprised them all!
Tumblr media
RATING: OKAY
You know, if this wasn't a TMNT book, I wouldn't continue reading it.
I have spoilery thoughts, so let's cover the basics here.
The story is a bit disappointing. We were presented with all these characters that now feel too much like a misdirect. The Turtles were barely in this story, so I have to say that seeing human characters die is a plus for this book.
I love the Ben Bishop pages, but I find the Escorza pages a bit inconsistent. Some of them look gorgeous and impossible to stop appreciating, and others feel distorted. Especially the turtles. It made sense in the first miniseries because there was a justification for Mikey's increased size, but these turtles are young.
Okay, let's move on to spoilers.
So, April is dead, and I cannot believe that I am relieved. I liked her in the one-shot that came out during Lost Years. But I felt like it was the time for her to leave, especially after a new human reporter was introduced.
What are my problems with this project?
Well, it takes forever to tell this story. The whole mini-series was like the first episode of a TV show, but it took a year to complete.
I am not sure why it has to be this slow (Lost Years didn't have this problem). I think this has to do with the Escorza brothers' speed, and because they did the first mini-series and this is clearly a curated universe, it makes sense that all the miniseries in the Roninverse will be slow and painful. But it doesn't need to be published in this format.
Hear me out... What if they follow a manga model? Keep the irregular schedule (quarterly?), but add more pages to each issue, and make sure that each of those is a BOOK. So a mini-series like this one, should fit in one book. People will pay for it. Just do it. Deliver chapters with three acts, and I won't care how much it takes to finish the whole saga.
As it is, this story introduced a lot of characters that ended up dying, and it was essentially, a first act (now that we know this is a story about the Hamatos versus the Foot again).
The next mini-series should be much better. I would honestly turn this comic into an ongoing series, but I guess that the delays wouldn't make that possible.
But then again, how big is this universe? Because it felt like it was expanding, but it is now returning to the clans. So... I am a bit lost with the Roninverse. I'd like it to stay contained to the clan feud if they cannot start an ongoing series. Otherwise, all these characters and plots will end up feeling rushed.
TL;DR... keep it simple... keep episodes tight... change the format to whatever makes sense for the frequency.
I am okay with how it ended... but I do feel like we didn't get enough Turtles.

2025 certainly has no shortage of games lined up for fans of all genres for those looking for something new to dive into. While Naughty Dog wants to shove yet another The Last of Us Part II Remastered edition down our throat, let's discuss titles that people actually want to play that will be releasing soon. Here are five games I’m particularly looking forward to this year!
Tumblr media
05. South of Midnight
A third person action-adventure story that takes place in a Southern fantasy world certainly caught my eye when I saw the first trailer. We see a lot of the same looking shooters, but South of Midnight seems to step outside the box and gives us an eye-catching new setting. The movement seems super fun if the gameplay is smooth. I hope we see more gameplay trailers soon!
Tumblr media
04. Ghost of Yōtei
You had me at ronin, a wolf companion and Erika Ishii. The gorgeous landscape of Japan as a backdrop had me salivating during the trailer. While I haven’t played Ghost of Tsushima (yet), this game’s aesthetic has my name written all over it. Infamous was the last Sucker Punch game I played, and I hope the Ghost of Tsushima/Yōtei series is just as fun.
Tumblr media
03.  The Wolf Among Us 2
Will this be the year we'll return to Fabletown to see Bigby and friends? Being a Telltale fan has been like being on a rollercoaster. Telltale pushed back the release date from last year to 2025, but we haven’t seen any news since. I’m hoping the long awaited sequel to The Wolf Among Us will get some traction this year and maybe an actual release date. Telltale style games have been a unique experience to enjoy in the video game medium, so I hope after everything they continue to create their games.
Tumblr media
02. Gears of War: E-Day
It surprised me just how long it's been since we’ve seen a Gears game on the market. Especially with the cliffhanger from Gears 5. Despite the controversial reception of Gears 5, I don’t think ANYONE has qualms about going back to the beginning with this series. Nostalgia hit me hard when we saw a young Marcus in the trailer, and I think we all choked up a bit seeing Dom again. I can’t wait to go back to Sera and see more of our fan favorite characters.
Tumblr media
01.  FBC: Firebreak
Set sometime after the events of Control (2019)’s, we’re set to return back to the Oldest House in FBC Firebreak. This game will be Remedy’s first first person shooter and multiplayer game. Remedy has set a pretty high bar with their standard of storytelling so I’m very interested in how they will showcase their strengths in a live game. However it plays out, I look forward to jumping back into the Oldest House! It’s been far too long, and maybe we’ll get to see some of what’s been happening behind the curtain during our newest Director’s tenure.
Did any of these titles make your 2025 gaming wishlist? I enjoy a variety of game types, and I have high hopes for the single-player games this year! With the industry as volatile as it is, maybe we’ll see these titles this year, maybe we’ll have to wait another to get our hands on them. One thing is for sure, I’ll see you at the firebreak.

According to the pacrim wiki, Coyote Tango was the first jaeger the program lost. By that time, Pentecost and Tamsin were not piloting anymore. It was June, 2016.
The order of pre-knifehead fallen jaegers is:
- Coyote Tango. Destroyed in combat against Itak. On its second set of pilots. June, 2016.
- Victory Alpha. Destroyed in combat against Raganarok. The pilots survived. July, 2016.
- Tacit Ronin. Abandoned because its pilots died of neural overload. July, 2016.
- Lucky Seven. Abandoned because one of its pilots was decommissioned. 2019.
Following this pic from the wiki:
Tumblr media
We know that the first jaeger was launched in 2015 (Brawler Yukon) and the last in 2019 (Striker Eureka).
The golden age of the jeager program was from 2017 to 2019, three years of gaining more than they were losing. The peak was in 2019, with 20 active jaegers. The bottom was in 2025, with no jaegers left.
2024 was the year with more deaths, with 8 j-pilots going KIA. Then 2025, with 7 deaths between the Double Event that killed both Cherno and Crimson, and Operation Pitfall, who claimed Pentecost and Chuck.
Between 2019 and 2023 there were 9 KIAs.
Which means Yancy was the first jaeger pilot to die on combat. It makes sense, given the reaction of Penecost to hearing that they had lost Gipsy's signal (and Yancy was dead).
It marks:
- 2019-20: 1 lost jaeger, 1 pilot KIA.
The list of fallen jaegers Post-Knifehead:
- 2020-21: 2 lost jaeger, 1 pilot KIA.
- 2021-22: 3 lost jaegers, 2 pilots KIA.
- 2022-23: 2 lost jaegers, 3 pilots KIA.
- 2023-24: 8 lost jaegers, 2 pilots KIA.
- 2024-25: 0 lost jaegers, 8 pilots KIA.
- 2025: 4 lost jaegers, 7 pilots KIA.
Let's compare all this info with the following Kaiju War Timeline from the wiki:
Tumblr media
A) 2013-2014: The Feral Burst. There were no jaegers yet to defend humanity against the 3 kaijus that invaded the world.
B) 2015-2019: The Long Game, Part I. There were 24 jargers up around this period, with a total of 13 kaijus making contact.
Special mention to the Beckets, who got an impressive mark of 5 kills during those years. It means they helped killed more than a 1/3 of those bastards during the golden era of the jaeger program. For what I see, Raleigh is the only pilot who had ever abandoned the jaeger program because he wanted to, not because he was hurt or kicked out.
C) 2020-2023: The Long Game, Part II. The amount of kaijus who invaded in those three years equals the amount of kaijus who made contact within the first 6 years of the war. It means the precursos sent as many kaijus in half the time. Humanity went into this phase with 19 jaegers. By the end they had 4.
2024 reports 13 kaiju attacks. It makes sense that they lost 8 jaegers and 10 pilots more or less in that year. With 12 jaegers active, it is more than a 1vs1 situation. Something tells me that most of Striker Eureka's kills were during this phase.
Special mention to the Hansen, btw. *During Chuck active years, he participated in almost third of the kaiju killings that happened then. I don't know Lucky Seven's score in this race, but *Herc's win amount to a 1/4 of the whole kaiju fights during his active time.
*The count stops at Mutavore. It does not include the Double Event or Pitfall.
If we include Post-Mutavore but not their participation/assistant at killing Leatherback:
- Chuck: 11 kills, 35 kaiju appereances during his active career (almost a 1/3).
- Herc: 12 kills, 44 kaiju appearances (not counting 2016 and adding at least 2 kills of the Lucky Seven era; around a 1/4).
Yet again, if by statistics alone, Mako is the most winning jaeger pilot of the movie. In her active years there had been 5 kaijus and she has helped kill 4. It's worth mentioning that her debut was on a double event followed by a triple event, with the only Category-5 ever saw. Impressive, to say the least.
On the other hand, Raleigh has helped kill or killed himself almost half of the kaijus that had appear on his active years.
Here: (ratio is 19-20 kaijus, 9 kills).
- 2025: 6 kaijus, 4 kills.
- 2015-2019: 13-14 kaijus, 5 kills.
The Hansens record is impressive just in the sheer size of their killing count, which is still not complete given I don't have the info on Lucky Seven. Meanwhile, Raleigh and Mako are impressive for the efficiency record.
Of the 51 kaijus that invaded the Earth, Gipsy and Striker combine to 20 kills. That means 2/5 of the total.
The last three j-pilots hold the best or most insane records of the program. Herc with the most wins, Mako with the best efficiency and Raleigh fucking Becket who had solo piloted twice and explode a jaeger in another world.
