Am I an insane person or does Malevolent kind of have like. A thing with queer coded villains. Not in a positive or reclamatory way either; it genuinely reminds me of like, old Disney movies and 2000s anime where all the most evil and inhuman male characters would also be written as campy and effeminate. And it seems like Harlan has no idea that he's doing it which is... interesting...

Like. Kayne is the most obvious example ofc. He's flamboyant and flirty and gives John and Arthur pet names. And at first I really liked it but the more it became clear that Kayne was a major antagonist and not just a mysterious neutral actor the more it started to put a bad taste in my mouth. It honestly still could have been okay if Harlan had maybe leaned more into the idea of Kayne and Arthur being parallels/foils but that ended up not really being a thing at all. Atp in the podcast I just get this really strange vibe where Kayne is simultaneously an incredibly violent, deceptive and predatory individual, and he's being written as basically canonically attracted to Arthur and it just. Seems like those two things are kind of connected. Again maybe I'm seeing things that aren't there but it seems like there are some "predatory creepy gay without boundaries" stereotypes being expressed here.

Similar issue with the Butcher. He actually has the closest to any sort of textual queerness of any Malevolent character, since he "falls in love" with his victims. Ummmm I kind of thought we had progressed past the "gay/queer serial killer who has an erotic fixation on the people he murders" trope. Apparently not. Again Harlan almost does something interesting/subversive by making our Perfect Protagonist have a weird connection/companionship with the Butcher, but in the end it seems like everyone agrees that they didn't actually have that much in common, obviously Arthur is unequivocally morally better than him, and then the Butcher gets his head exploded.

It's been longer since I listened to seasons 1-3 but Larson definitely had some similar queer-coding going on with him, as well as some other minor villains (Kellin comes to mind). It just seems like a pattern of Arthur being contrasted with characters who are not just morally corrupt but also written as (subtextually sexually) predatory or creepy, especially towards Arthur. And then Arthur is disgusted by their unnatural desires and heroically defeats or evades them. I could be making something out of nothing but it just feels... icky.

You are absolutely not an insane person of any caliber, this is something fandom has murmured about for a long time! It is definitely a thing in the show that just about any character that encounters Arthur becomes immediately obsessed with him. When it's an ally, like Noel, Oscar, even Daniel and Alia, they are almost immediately convinced of his goodness and go to great lengths not just to help him, but to reassure him that he's A Good Man (tm). But when it's the villains? It's this invasive flirtatious thing, where they're threatening not just to kill him but to lock him up in their basement or something, intimate tortures and such. (Larson maybe less so - he seems more like Southern Gentleman approach but much less handsy than Kayne and Collins). And then there's Antoine, whooo boy. If Antoine really is meant to be gay, and thus was also gay in Arthur's prime timeline when he was a Supervillain? Yeesh I don't want to think of the connotations from CoC1.

I don't believe it's intentionally homophobic, necessarily. I think these villains all represent pretty common horror tropes from over the decades, and Malevolent just co-ops them without thinking that deeply about it. In the same way that the entrance to the Witch's home is a smelly vagina wall: vagina walls have been gross in horror movies and games forever! It's here because it's a thing that all people find gross, right?? I don't think it's any different to him than shoving Arthur full of maggots, or the guy in Deviser having his fingernails torn off. These are default things people are scared of you can plop into almost any horror plot.

But in 2025 it's not wrong to want a writer to actually think about the greater context of the "things everyone thinks is scary" they put into their work, like straight men being threatened with sexual violence, or old women living in filth. Yes horror has been here hundreds of times before. But does it need to be here again? When the sexual violence is the only overt queerness on display and half of all women on the show are old and live in filth?

And of course, the fandom is doing really deranged and kinky shit with these villains, which I 100000000% support. But I don't think he fully grasps the difference between "fans making things legit queer for their own amusement and wish fulfillment" and "the creator playing at making things queer because it's creepy."

i've got to put out an attempt to spread the good word of wheel of time to some of my new rings of power followers!

are you hankering for a new fantasy show to fill the void of ROP? look no further than wheel of time! it's also on amazon prime and is something of a sister-show to ROP. there are 2 seasons out currently, and season 3 is in post-production and slated to release sometime in 2025.

here's what WOT is about:

in a world that has reincarnation, rosamund pike's character who has been described as lesbian gandalf learns that an apocalyptic figure called "the dragon" who broke the world 3000 years ago has been reborn as a new person. accompanied by her platonic work-husband to whom she's psychically bonded, she narrows her search down to 5 potential candidates, a group of 20-somethings from the same little village. the group embarks on a quest to figure out which one of them is the dragon reborn, but even the ones who are not the dragon have nevertheless been chosen out by fate to have their own remarkable powers and key roles in deciding the fate of the world.

here's what makes WOT similar to ROP:

multiple-storyline ensemble show with a variety of personalities among the main characters, so you'll be sure to find Your Blorbo in somebody (and there's a pretty big variety among the fandom of who everyone's faves are, which goes to show how good ALL the characters are!)

epic fantasy that earnestly and wholeheartedly embraces its genre and the inherent whimsy and fantasticalness therein, without acting like it's embarrassed about having fantasy elements or like it considers itself too good and too prestige for the genre

it has some truly dark and harrowing stuff, but it never feels like it's gratuitous/just for shock value and never descends into cynical grimdark territory. it centers on the importance of hope and togetherness to fight against evil (tolkien was a primary inspiration for the WOT books' author robert jordan, so some of the vibes and themes are similar)

incredibly in-depth worldbuilding and world history

gorgeous costumes, sets, scenery, soundtrack, and production value. i could wax poetic about the soundtrack all day but will restrain myself and just say that it's a similar approach as ROP of specific character themes rearranged ad infinitum to suit the tone of different scenes and that it has a very unique soundscape that stands out from traditional orchestral fantasy. the costumes, especially in the second season, are some of the most unique and distinctive i've ever seen in a fantasy show, using lots of sharp/modern silhouettes to evoke a different feel from your standard medieval-inspired fantasy costumes. and vibrant colors!!!

absolutely Perfect casting across the board, with every actor from the most seasoned veterans to the newest-comers delivering wonderful performances, embodying their characters perfectly, and clearly having the time of their life making this show.

major character recast between s1 and s2 haha but like with adar, both mat actors are wonderful and it's impossible to wish one was the other while watching their respective performances.

Wholesome Boy Besties, and overall a lack of toxic masculinity and a total comfort with letting men be tender and kind and emotional (in fact, i'd say WOT does even better at this than ROP)

mesmerizing villains who run the gamut from tragic to Sexy Fun Evil to straight-up bonechilling (oftentimes multiple categories all rolled into the same villain). what if sauron was a sexy sexy lady whose top hobbies were serving cunt and gaslighting her boytoy? watch wheel of time to find out.

on that note, what would you get if you took the toxic hero/villain/villain polyeroticism of galadriel/sauron/adar, dialed it up to 11, and made it borderline canon that they used to be in a throuple that ended badly? one of the major dynamics of WOT s2, that's what.

a slower, establishing first season followed by a bombastic second season that raises the stakes, lets the villains out to play big time, and generally knocks it out of the park. so if you're on the fence while watching s1, keep going to get to the glowup!

and here's what makes WOT better than ROP:

while they both improve in their second season, imo the first season of WOT is quite a bit better than the first season of ROP (anecdotal evidence: i started both shows as a complete show-only with no prior familiarity with the source material (bar having watched the LOTR movies), and WOT had me hooked by the end of 1x01 whereas ROP i watched 2 episodes and abandoned it for 2 years before coming back for another try and successfully getting hooked)

i'd say the main reason for this is that the story of WOT s1 is fairly simple and small scale and laser-focused on just our 7 main characters who all share a single storyline together (breaking up into 3 sub-storylines for the middle portion of the season, then coming back together again), and it holds off on expanding the scale of the world & story until s2. this was much more effective at getting a newcomer like me assimilated in the world, hooked on the story, and invested in the characters than ROP starting out with a massive sprawling cast and story right off the bat and kind of overwhelming me with too much going on. WOT s1 was also very clear in establishing Here Are The Stakes And Here's Why You Should Care immediately in the pilot episode, whereas i struggled for a while with seeing what the Point of ROP was or why i should care about these characters (because there are too many of them and not enough time spent on any).

WOT is better at character depth and development, in large part because its main cast is about half the size of ROP's so there's just a lot more breathing room. like with ROP, some characters/storylines are naturally more important than others in a given season and thus everyone's prominence ebbs and flows, but unlike ROP, the characters who are in their "off-season" still get proper season-long arcs and never feel like they're getting neglected. no primary WOT character has ever been wholly absent for more than 1 episode per season (except for mat absent from 2 eps in s1 for recasting-related reasons).

following off of that, i'd say WOT is better at handling multiple storylines, because of the above point of fewer characters and also the earlier point that all the characters start together, then separate. this ensures that all the different storylines feel connected to each other, unlike ROP where there are some groups of characters that have never even met anyone else. the Found Family and Power Of Friendship themes are extremely strong in WOT, and the bonds between the core characters are unbreakable! and this makes all the storylines feel connected and cohesive even when they're taking place across the continent.

another similar point: WOT strikes a better balance between epic scale and narrative intimacy. i can't describe this any better or think of specific examples, it's just a Vibe i feel that ROP sometimes gets lost in its own scale whereas WOT always keeps us very firmly anchored in the characters and the personal stakes no matter how vast the world or conflict becomes. i might exemplify this by saying that if you enjoyed the sauron-celebrimbor scenes in s2, you'll love WOT because it is a huge proponent of "2 characters in a room talking to each other" scenes that further the larger plot while also keeping things intimate and personal and fleshing out the characters.

oh also, focal episodes! every season, WOT does 1 or 2 episodes that focus in deeply on one particular main character (different one every time) at a key point in their journey and deliver some amazing in-depth characterwork (while still furthering the story and allotting time to the other characters & storylines too). characters truly are one of the strongest aspects of WOT, both books and show, and i love that the show takes the time to give us episodes like this. it is so so good at balancing character & plot, and understanding that we won't care about the plot unless we care about the characters.

there is a HUGE cast of female characters, and a very varied cast too. the main cast is 50/50 men and women, and the supporting cast is at least 50/50 too if not majority women. in both the source material and the adaptation, women are integral to the story and so many of them are huge players that drive the narrative, rather than feeling like afterthoughts the 2020s adaptation is fruitlessly trying to cram into source material that was not designed for them as is often the case with ROP imo.

branching off of that: one of the major institutions in WOTworld is an all-woman wizard faction, complete with a lady wizard pope. this gives us things like battle scenes and political scheming that's mostly or exclusively between women. it's awesome!

edited to add: might be obvious from the point about there being a lot of women, but WOT also has lots of female friendships! and female mentorships and rivalries and romances too. just so many relationships between women, quite a contrast to nori and poppy struggling to singlehandedly make ROP pass the bechdel test.

canon queer characters and relationships. and queerness is not only present in WOTworld, it's normalized!

and finally, you'll have to wait til s2 to get her, but WOT is better because it has elayne trakand and thus is better than every show that does not have elayne trakand (can you tell who my blorbo is)

“It doesn’t make any sense,” you lament. “The robberies always occur after big events, dinners, charity galas, but there’s no other connection.”

“Catering company?” your desk neighbor suggests.

“Different for every event. No one worker has been at every event. Planners have alibis, there’s no similarity in looks or where victims live, even banks. The only lead we have is wealthy couples getting robbed, sometimes at gunpoint, after an event.”

You drop your head into your hands as you reconsider the entire case. You’ve looked through every guest list, and everyone has alibied out, even though only a few couples overlapped and attended every event. They got robbed, too, as it turns out. The first two robberies had a connection: they both banked at the same place, but after that, the connection disappeared.

“It has to be someone near the events,” you murmur. “Maybe it’s someone who has access to Los Angeles socialite calendars and is just hanging around the events and picking people at random.”

Your phone rings, and you sigh before you answer, “Detective Kay.”

“Detective, there’s been a murder,” the caller says.

“Let me get you someone in homicide.”

“No, this is related to your burglary case. Or at least that’s what the homicide detective thinks. It looks like a robbery gone wrong.”

“What’s the address?” you ask as you pick up your cell phone and keys. “I’ll be there in fifteen minutes.”

On the drive into the hills, you add this new twist to your thoughts on the case. You agree that this location, the schedule, and everything about the setting of the crime match your investigation. The murder is either a progression or a mistake. Maybe the burglar was interrupted, or the victim tried to stop him. Before you can create too many theories, you arrive at the scene and flash your badge to enter the house.

“What have we got?” you ask the homicide detective surveying the scene.

“Forensics is going over everything now, but it doesn’t look like anything was taken. Single gunshot to the chest was our cause of death.”

“Nothing was taken?” you repeat. “Then why do you think this is related to the thefts?”

“Because of that,” he answers, squatting as he points under the makeup vanity. “A bag filled with jewelry pushed just out of reach. Almost like a dying woman was trying to protect herself and her home.”

“What else did you find?”

“Not much. Seems like this happened pretty quickly. Alarm was disabled at eleven-oh-five p.m.”

“After the murder mystery theater on the yacht,” you add. “Date night gold for the rich.”

“Hence, why we think this is your case, not ours. They’ll try to recover the bullet during the autopsy and run ballistics.”

“Until then, it’s mine to decipher. Thanks, detective.”

“Could I make one suggestion?” he inquires as he removes his gloves. You nod, and he says, “This seems like the perfect opportunity for a UC. Even if you don’t come face-to-face with the burglar, you get to know a bit more about the victims.”

“Even more if you go undercover yourself,” your partner adds as she walks into the house. “Progression or accident?” she asks, pointing to the victim.

“I can’t go undercover,” you argue.

“Why not? You get to play dress up. Plus, you’ve got a tactically trained and incredibly attractive husband you could take with you. No one would question your right to be there with Deac’s old money vibe and your, well, everything.”

You look around the scene, a luxury environment as an outward acknowledgement of all the victim worked for, or as it may be, didn’t work for, and decide it truly is your best option.

“I need a Rolex.”

Browsing the rows of the evidence locker with a small box in your hand, you wonder why so many rich people get arrested. So far, you’ve gathered a Rolex Daytona worth at least $100,000 and three pairs of sunglasses from Cartier, Ray Ban, and Dolce and Gabbana.

“Perfect,” you whisper as you find an envelope with a Tiffany ring and a pure obsidian band.

With these accessories and the dresses your contact who works with the UC division is procuring for you, you do not doubt that you will fit in. You still need a car, but you know just the people to ask about that.

“I need to check these out, Ally,” you request as you slide the evidence onto a desk. “For case 9212024.”

“No problem,” she answers as she begins logging case numbers and photos into her computer. “Who’s the ring for?”

“My husband.”

“I pity the criminals you’re after.”

“At least they’ll get a nice view while we put the cuffs on.”

“What are you doing here?” Rocker asks as you enter SWAT HQ.

“Lovely to see you too, Donovan,” you reply with a smile. “Do you greet your wife like that?”

Rocker shrugs and hugs you quickly before he directs you to where 20 Squad is reviewing warrants.

“Sergeant Kay,” you call as you enter.

“Oh, hi!” Street greets.

“This is a surprise,” Deacon says as he moves around Street to hug you.

“I have something for you,” you begin. You pull the obsidian ring from your pocket and lift the Cartier aviators from your side. “A proposal.”

“Is this a married couple thing or am I just confused?” Street whispers.

“You don’t want me to answer that, playboy,” Luca replies, slapping his back.

“Why?” Deacon questions, smiling even as he narrows his eyes at you.

“It’s just a date,” you promise.

“To do what?”

“I’m still working the string of burglaries targeting rich couples. We’ve got tiny leads that add to enough of a clue that I want to go undercover at the next big event to try to find something. I have to work faster because a woman was killed during a robbery last night.”

“Why not take someone more familiar with the case?”

“Do it, Deac,” Street whispers. “Just for the watch.”

“What watch?” Deacon asks.

You lift your hand to show the Rolex Daytona hanging loosely around your wrist. “There’s a look to people like this. I’ve got everything except a date right now, and you’re the best option for more reasons than I can list, Deac. If you can’t, I get it.”

“No, I want to,” he states, taking the sunglasses from your hand and sliding them onto his face. “Let’s catch a burglar.”

“Oh, that’s just not fair,” Street complains.

“Street,” you call. “I need something from you and Luca too.”

“Alright,” you announce after you secure your earrings. “We just moved here from New York, have our accounts set up, moved into a newly renovated house in the hills and are scoping out the local charities because we’re budding philanthropists.”

“And luring a thief,” Deacon adds as he gently tugs the strap of your dress to straighten your neckline.

“Mostly that.”

“I’m following your lead tonight, detective.”

“I like the sound of that.”

“Your ride is here,” Street says on the other side of your door. “And you’re welcome, but don’t get used to it. Luca and I may be brilliant, but we’re not get a free Bugatti loaner every week brilliant.”

“I never said it had to be a Bugatti,” you whisper to Deacon.

“I can hear you, ya know,” Street calls. “You are wearing a wire. So, keep it PG, Deac.”

Deacon smiles as he leans toward the tiny microphone hidden in the seam of your dress strap and answers, “10-4, good buddy.”

Street groans, and you gently push Deacon’s shoulders to straighten his tie. He looks good, though you expected no less.

“Let’s be rich for a night.”

“Welcome, Mr. and Mrs. Napier,” the valet greets as he opens your door. “Beautiful car. It's number 17,” he adds as he hands Deacon the card to pick up the car after the event. “Enjoy your evening.”

“Thank you,” Deacon answers, nodding as he shakes the man’s hand and passes a $50.

You wait on the curb as Deacon rounds the back of the Bugatti and wraps his arm around your waist.

“If he scratches that car, Street will kill me,” you say through your smile.

“Good thing it’s not Street’s car,” Deacon replies. “Let’s go, Mrs. Napier.”

You smile while you loop your arm around Deacon’s bicep and follow him into the concert hall. Innumerable couples are finding their seats and milling around the open area of the hall as they discuss charities, recent events, and bank account balances. With Deacon, you have no concern about looking out of place, and your confidence is assured when three different women look over at him. One of which looks away from her husband to do so.

“Good evening,” a woman greets, smiling as she approaches you. “My name is Andrea Campbell and I’m hosting this evening’s event. Forgive me if I’m mistaken, but I don’t recall meeting you.”

“No, ma’am, you haven’t,” Deacon says, carefully extracting his arm from your hold as he offers to shake her hand. “I’m Dan Napier and this is my wife. We just moved here from upstate New York and wanted to see the charities of Los Angeles.”

“Oh, how wonderful! Mrs. Napier, I am an advocate for women in philanthropy, so if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. I truly hope you enjoy this evening’s show and the presentation.”

“Thank you,” you offer before Andrea is called away. Once she’s out of earshot, you stifle a laugh and whisper, “I’m surprised she even saw me.”

“Mrs. Napier, is it?” a man asks, allowing as he pauses directly at your side, out of Deacon’s reach. “My associate Andrea mentioned that you were here. I believe you recently opened an account at my branch of United Banks. Hopefully you can spare some time soon so I can show you around LA.”

He walks away before you or Deacon can speak, and you’re left to watch him and wonder why he chose to acknowledge you.

“Think he’s a suspect?” Deacon murmurs into your ear as you turn toward him.

“No,” you answer, moving your professionally styled hair as you shake your head. “Just a man with a roving eye. We have no evidence that our guy goes after women any more than men.”

“But he killed the woman last night.”

“The husband called it in, though. He was in the house when it happened. Said they were both tied up and she managed to get free and went into the bedroom to confront the thief. He’s scared, he doesn’t like being watched. Nothing like that guy.”

Deacon nods and pulls you close, smiling before he kisses you quickly. You slide your hand into his and follow him to your seat.

During the concert, nothing of note occurs. Even after it ends, you’re welcomed to Los Angeles by several couples, but no one sticks out as a possible suspect. So, disappointed and back at square one, you exit the concert hall and stand at Deacon’s side as he asks the valet to fetch the car.

Just as the Bugatti pulls up, the man who parked your loaner car moves behind Deacon and presses a gun against the small of his back.

“Get in the car, Mr. Napier. I’d hate to shoot through your wife’s pretty dress,” he demands quietly. “Now.”

Deacon moves his hands slightly to show the man that he’s unarmed and mumbles, “Okay, okay.”

“In the car, Mrs. Napier,” he demands, jerking his head toward the passenger door.

You nod quickly, wearing faux fear on your face as you get in the front seat. Deacon sits in the driver’s seat beside you as the armed man slides in behind him.

“Nice car,” he applauds. “Now drive to your house. Either one of you moves for a phone… if you even adjust the air vent, I will shoot you both.”

You don’t think he will, not somewhere as noticeable and closed-in as the car, but you nod and pretend to swallow a sob as Deacon pulls the Bugatti out of the short driveway.

“Here’s what’s going to happen,” the man begins as Hondo speaks into your earpiece to alert you that he’s behind you in an unmarked car. “We’re going to go into your house, you’re going to turn off the alarm and get out of my way, and I’m going to take whatever I want. Understood?”

“You don’t have to do this,” Deacon replies.

The man presses the gun against your temple and yells, “Understood?!”

“Yes,” Deacon answers quickly, tightening his grip on the steering wheel, his knuckles white as his hands remain firmly at 10 and 2. “Understood.”

“I trust you, Dan,” you whisper as his left hand shifts slightly. “And everything you’d want people to do.”

“Shut up!” the man demands, lowering his gun slightly as he looks between you and Deacon.

“I trust you, Daniel,” you repeat softly, hoping your wire picks it up.

“I hope you don’t regret that,” Hondo answers in your ear. “Turn one light too early if you mean it, Deac.”

Deacon’s jaw clenches as he approaches the last light before your turn.

“This way is faster,” he tells the thief as he hits the blinker but doesn’t move.

Hondo’s engine revs as he increases his speed, steering his car to the right to perform a PIT manoeuvre.  When his front bumper collides with the side of the Bugatti, Deacon releases the wheel and turns toward you. He grabs the man’s forearm and hits it against the passenger seat as you retrieve your service weapon from your ankle holster. The car slides to a stop against the curb, and the man drops his gun, then begins crying as you level your aim at him.

“You’re under arrest,” you tell him, panting as you try to catch your breath and lower your heart rate.

“Who are you?” the man whimpers as Deacon holds his arm between the front seats.

“Detective Kay, LAPD,” you answer. “This is Sergeant Kay. And the man about to pull you out onto the pavement is Sergeant Hondo. LAPD SWAT.”

“Wait,” he interrupts, sniffling. “You’re actually married?”

Hondo rips the door open before you can answer and grabs the back of the man’s shirt collar to haul him out of the car. He looks through the open back door to check on you and Deacon, then clicks his tongue.

“Luca and Street are not going to be happy.”

You tip your head back against the headrest and groan.

“Congratulations, Detective Kay,” Deacon says.

He smiles as you turn in the seat to face him.

“I love you,” you tell him softly. “Even more without the expensive jewelry.”

“But I look good in the sunglasses, right?”

You laugh and nod but point out, “We didn’t need them for a concert at night, though.”

Deacon laughs with you, and as the approaching police lights reflect around you, you know your life is richer with Deacon than with any material belongings you could ever borrow or earn.

ferris bueller (ferris bueller's day off) - cocky, larger than life, popular and beloved by younger kids at the school, thinks he can get away with anything, manages to be charming through all this

peter parker (the amazing spider man) - goofy, willing to fight for what's right, has a sunny vibe despite anything negative going on

anthony bridgerton (bridgerton) - protective of his family, charasmatic, kind of a playboy but also an intense loveryboy at the same time

I watched AYS for the first time since the show ended today as I was off work sick, and it hit me. They are together.

As in truly and utterly together.

Objectively speaking if anyone was to watch the show, at least the Japan episodes out of context, without knowledge, without prejudice, without malice, they would see a couple. I do know how this isn’t widely seen in the fandom, I’m assuming cult hate and delusion, and ignorance/homophobia, but it’s so so obvious, and I think Jimin and JK knew certain people would see them. I think they wanted that.

In the interest of finding said objectivity I got a friend to watch with me on Disney, and she asked if they were together. Case in point.

They went to a romantic and safe place, one which holds precious memories, where they saw their first snow, walking around like in a hallmark movie, eating good food together, and just being together. I’m not even talking about the train ride, or the hot tub, it’s just how they are. So entwined, they literally move together. They are so in sync, so domestic. This doesn’t come from thin air, or not seeing each other, this level of intimacy is not born of friendship however deep, it’s more.

Take the meal they have in their pjs. Who does that on a bros trip firstly? And then watching them there, it’s so cosy and cute. Jimin only has to pout about wanting more of one of the dishes, and it suddenly appears. Friends don’t do that, or not any that I know, it would be an individual decision, you’d be paying for yourself kinda vibe, not pouting and getting your own way. Same as in the grocery store in CT, Jimin points and rubs his tummy, and gets his way. It’s so cute and endearing.

The constant need to touch, I know about skinship, but this is so different, it’s innocent in someways like they are holding back, but the eyes don’t lie, and there were many moments you can see it truly in all it’s glory.

It’s just so romantic, none of the last three episodes had a bro vibe, neither did CT honestly, and the jeju episodes serve to highlight just how coupley they are.

All this to say I love their love.

I think most people from outside would see them as a couple. That's why it is so wild most people in the fandom are still in denial about this.

The level of intimacy, domesticity, the touches, the looks, the words, the tones, the way their personality are complimentary, the way everything matches between them, how happy they are together, how flirty they get, the little soft moments as well as the loud shocking ones; everything about them screams couple and long-term, stable love relationship.

Why people still do not see it is beyond me. I think it comes down to that they do not want to see it. Simple.

Because everything has been there for years if PEOPLE SIMPLY PAID ATTENTION and I had so much fear about AYS, because it would be blatantly obvious and it was. But I underestimated to which length and mental gymnastics people would do to stay in denial. Some people still managed to try to belittle their bond. How far are they willing to distort reality? How far are they willing to go for reality to fit their own fantasy or fit this fucking bro agenda bullshit? (I'm sick of it)

They are in love.

A part of me wishes everyone would see it. That everyone would get it and support it. But I know this is very selfish, an egoic way to prove everyone we were right all along. But there is nothing to prove. And it would not serve them. If everyone knew it would put them in danger. Because a lot of people aren't loving, and their own country would give them hell.

So maybe this is all a blessing, that just some of us see it and support in our own corner, maybe it's best it does not get too noisy.

I think jikook suspected it. I think a part of them counted on it. They observed the fandom and know how it operates.

Which all keeps them safe.

Those with open hearts and a clear vision saw how incredibly romantic AYS was.

Jikook even repeated it several times.

It was all so gentle and soft, funny and cute, with an ease and a comfort only truly loving partners can convey.

It was joy and happiness, seeing them together.

It was love in it's purest form.

They really bring out the best of each other.

I'm in love with their love too. It's only natural to be attracted to beauty, and with these two pure souls having a love such as theirs? It's simply magnificent.

AYS went beyond my expectations. There were many things that did not suprise me. But what truly surprised me is seeing..how to put it...the passage of time? The feeling that yes they have been together FOR A LONG TIME and it showed.

Because there was no rush. There was not the visceral need of young love. It was slow, careful, assured, known, tender. It was simple and natural. As easy as breathing.

They are completely intertwined with each other like it's supposed to be this way. And it is.

Isn't it all perfect? It's perfect. It's beautiful. It's pure love. They have butterflies. I have butterlies too.

They don't have anything to prove anymore. And I think there's no need for us to prove it either for any other part of the fandom that don't want to open their eyes to something that is STARING AT THEM IN THE FACE. Let them in their own lies. We know what is true and what is just and it's ok.

I don't really like the trans Maxie headcanon as much as some of the other trans headcanons for characters because I just feel like it buys too much into the common fandom tropes of "one member of popular ship must be afab and the other must he amab" with Hardenshipping being an incredibly popular ship, and "skinny white man = trans" being the most common trans headcanons. I'm not saying anyone who headcanons Maxie as trans is doing it for those reasons, and I have NO PROBLEM with people who headcanon Maxie as trans. Like, I'll still read fics and look at art where he is, and I don't mind it, I just don't like it personally for those reasons, and don't headcanon him as trans.

I personally don't think he cares what pronouns he's referred to by because he thinks it's a waste of time to correct people on something so trivial as a set of words, and he doesn't care how people percieve him.

In regards to sexuality, I also think he doesn't bother with labels, or really care about anything like that in general. I think he's probably on the asexual/aromantic spectrum, but it could also be interpreted as him just being closed off and weird like he is.

Personally I think if he bothered with labelling, he'd be Demiromantic. I'm not sure if he'd be cis or not but he probably still wouldn't care about pronouns or anything.

over the last few months, i've been devouring @wolfpants' works. ever since reading pages of you in two days, their rendering of harry, draco and a vast array of incredibly compelling side characters have irrevocably hooked me.

wolf is an author in enthralling motion. their fics often feature places, temporalities and contexts far removed from where canon holds & leaves us, while simultaneously being tenderly familiar, like coming home. wolf's sense of & grasp over setting leaves me breathless and dumbstruck. their different spatialities inform & infuse character in admirable ways, at various levels of craft, enjoyment and inspiration. this fandom knows and loves the draco and harry they give us, but we delight in discovering new dimensions & aspects of these characters. it's always done brilliantly believably, especially in the framework of the worlds they construct— a breath of fresh air in a forest where the trees still know your name.

wolf's works also demonstrate, sometimes explicitly, sometimes implicitly, a really significant political sensibility. most of their fics are set against backdrops tight with political tension bleeding into the characters' circumstances and interpersonal dynamics. whether through a spectrality haunting the narrative or the crucial central diegetic thread, wolf's works are layered, interrogating and collapsing delineations among private, public and political, between history and contemporaneity and between narrative and commentary.

in the interests of length & theme of this list, i've specifically selected some fics that, for me, showcase wolf's mastery & playfulness with setting, understood as deviations in place, time and universe. the broader recommendation is, of course, to check out everything wolf has ever written!

a stunning portrait of desire, longing and familiarity that uses distance as a device to intensify every element. it's unbelievable how much character & context 1k words of (mostly) smut can pack in. the slivers of backstory demand your investment, inform the dynamic in crucial ways and set up some delicious stakes and tension. and some absolutely fantastic dirty talk. see also: @getawayfox's gorgeous art for this fic!

The last person Harry expects to run into on a long haul flight to New York City is Draco Malfoy.

the way wolf writes movement— between places, between people— strokes its way up your spine, warms you, walks with you. draco and harry, buoyed in the air, let preconceived notions fall away, to be replaced by startlingly rapid and exquisite intimacy. the liminal settings, specifically, allow mature, open-minded, desirous characterisation & some of the most glorious, soft, tender sex to fall into like a warm bed.

atmospheric writing dialled up to eleven, like the smell of ozone in the air before a thunderstorm. the sense of limbo— transience, out of place and time, the complication of home— that afflicts the circumstances of draco & harry here is heart-wrenching. a taut rumination on otherness in a variety of ways, rendered through some of the most tense and subtle writing i've encountered.

under giant mountains (E, 33.7k) ft. norwegian dragon reserves & rampant escapist tendencies

Harry doesn't know where he's going. Everyone else has their life paths figured out; he doesn't even know where his map is. Who'd have thought Draco Malfoy bathing in a Norwegian forest would be the guidepost Harry needed?

opens with harry, stuck in the same place for far too long, and draco, avoiding fixity like the plague. this fic looks at both stagnation and escapism as iterations of each other & treats them with the gentlest empathy. the norwegian dragon reserve setting, whose visuality wolf's writing captures beautifully, becomes the canvas to explore both. desire, here, was simultaneously so evident from the outset and took its time to build— longing tinged every interaction & payoff, in the form of a sequence of some of the most emotionally fraught sex scenes i've ever read, was that much sweeter.

romp and circumstance (E, 35k) ft. a historical au set in the 1800s, regency era england

Since the war, Harry Potter has gone from Saviour to Scoundrel—not that he’s complaining. With a schedule full of gorgeous men, alcohol, and late nights, why would he want to change? Enter Draco Malfoy: beautiful, sharp, and completely untouchable. When Draco comes to Harry with a proposition to help him attract an engagement, Harry’s up for it—after all, how hard can it be not falling for his former nemesis? Very hard, apparently.

the very first wolf fic i read, in a brief little fandom interlude back in 2022. i remember thinking, then, what an author, i'm really missing out these days. one of my favourite post-war harry characterisations— raucous, promiscuous, messy and at heart, a hopeless romantic. also one of my favourite draco characterisations— pristine, a little uptight, cool and distant and untouchable, except what he really wants is to be unbuttoned, messed up. the transforming sentiments of their relationship were so compelling, the build of harry's feelings was perfectly achey and tender and this draco was a complex, nuanced, frightfully sexy version that i just couldn't turn away from.

pages of you (E, 101k) ft. a 1980s non-magical au

Summer, 1980. Harry is floating between university and becoming a Real Certified Adult. He's not ready. He really isn't. In a desperate attempt to have the Best Last Summer ever, he takes a casual job at his godfather's bookshop in London, starts an illicit pen pal affair with a wordy posh boy that he's catching feelings for, all while dealing with the son of Sirius's business rival, one Draco Malfoy, insufferable know-it-all extraordinaire.

gosh, what a fic. sensitive and sprawling, this work brings the spatialities of london, sirius and remus' queer comfort of a bookshop and harry's room at the residence halls to pulsing, colourful, splendid life. i can still close my eyes and imagine the spaces this fic occurs in, how important they are to the push and pull, ups and downs of the dynamic between harry and draco. a coming-of-age/sexual awakening & exploration story, summer romance and queer political fiction rolled into one, this is a fic that's hard to summarise and easy to obsess over. perfect characterisations, writing that burrows into your soul and a plot that unfolds with the slow and steady depth of gentle lake.

The TMNT (and others from the same universe) as Oiraon's! (Oiraon's are a make-believe Closed Species that just look like gryphons, NOT owned/created by me) Silly gryphons that im very much totally not obsessed with. I did not plan on this happening at all, i accidentally turned Leo into an Oiraon when i was bored and went "Damn this is actually a cool idea, F* it we ball" and decided that ill turn the rest into Oiraon's because i couldnt resist the temptation <3

Yeah, they all (or most) have different names than in the show, partly because id already named Tzaoul, but also to make them fit smoother into the Oiraon universe! I challenged myself to convey their Oiraon version with just looks and vibes alone, i want you to be able to guess who is who without an OG name giving it away >:)

At the moment, Tzaoul/Leo is finished but all secret-y hush-hush because he has exclusive traits that havent been released yet :) and i cant spoil it.

This obscure self indulgent AU lives rent free in my head and i welcome any and all asks, i will word vomit for ages with my ideas n stuff.

Some of the same anti-JayRoy people who stan Mia so hard seem to like accusing JayRoys of making Roy a groomer made that way by Jason, or claiming the character and his fans need restraining orders from getting their filthy hands on the Arrows or other DCU people. Wish Batfam and Arrowfam spaces weren't so toxic but when they out themselves like that it makes them easier to add to block lists.

This fandom, my guys...

> "accuse jayroys of making roy a groomer" the vast majority of Jayroy fans ship them as adults, the two stories where Roy was a groomer were 1) extremely rare, 2) clearly an AU and 3) angst/horror stories about sexual abuse that thought their version of Roy would make an interesting villain (which, he was) rather than love stories. If those people assume those fics (again i found like two) are representative of the ship as a whole, that that's the appeal of the romance to us, that's on them. Sometimes a story needs a villain, don't like don't read, there are way too many jayroy stories out there for that to be a sensible take. What I do suspect is more probable is that they're using accusations of Jayroy making Roy a groomer as a buzzword because of their discomfort with the age difference, which is imo very much a them problem. Jason and Roy interacted like once when Jason was a kid and Roy was very much busy with Cheshire at that point, there's no reason to assume he'd have to have groomed Jason aside from bad faith. I'm also very uncomfortable with this movement I've seen recently of assimilating age gap relationships with pedocriminality. Two grown adults having a consensual relationship is not statutory rape, not csa and not grooming, those words have meaning and should not be diluted to infantilise grown adults about anything that makes you uncomfortable.

Mia doesn't need a restraining order she needs people to start respecting her and her many incredible skills and also to stop being so weird about Sidekick Showdown. Jason isn't even a villain rn and especially not to Roy. The last jayroy interaction I can even recall is roy mentioning jason gave him a tip that helped him find Lian -really horrible of him, truly.

-"the character's fans need restraining orders" what those people need, my friend, is a grip. Yk that "X is not real, it can't hurt me" meme? I think some jayroy/jason antis need a bit more of that mindset but like genuinely. Jason is a fictional character. You don't need a restraining order you need to touch grass.

> And yk, on the topic of Mia, obviously I'm not gonna claim they're fake fans or anything because that's a nasty assumption to make, that's not what I'm saying, but sometimes certain blogs give a certain vibe and I do want to say, basing your existence in the fandom as a fan of a character on using that character as a prop to bring another character down, constantly comparing the two characters and insulting fans of the other character and accusing the character and his fans of "stealing" traits from your blorbo and being so upset about them being more popular than your blorbo... That doesn't sound like the most joyful way to engage in the fandom experience if I'm being honest. Also doesn't sound like it's gonna do much to expand the blorbo's popularity.

And to be honest, if Mia saw the way many people talked about her, she'd be real pissed off herself yk.

Below the cut, AidaRonan answered some questions about their writing process and some of their recommended work!

Why do you write Steddie?

That’s a great question. As with a lot of things I watch or read, some of it was just that lightbulb moment of “Huh. These two want to kiss.” I know the “don't ya, Big Boy?” moment was big for a lot of us including me. Another huge thing was just Eddie. I’d always enjoyed Steve when I was a more casual watcher of the show, but Eddie. I’m in the wrong generation to have been an 80s metalhead, but I was an 00s Scene Kid (with undiagnosed ADHD), and a lot of who Eddie is and how he interacts with the world around him are translatable and relatable to me. So when he died on the show, it felt kind of personal. I actually wrote Orta Recens Quam Pura Nites thinking I’d do just one fix-it for his death, and then that would be it and I’d go back to writing in other fandoms. Then I got the idea for Anywhere, Anytime in the middle of working on that, and I really started to dial into who these two were to me and how they might slot together. I also just had so much fun writing their banter that I knew I was a goner.  At the risk of getting too vulnerable, I have a tendency to latch onto characters who allow me to explore something about myself. With these two, I got two characters with attributes I feel deeply connected with. I’m now running experiments on them in the lab to learn more about me while also just generally exploring who they are in different Situations. And I’m giving them a thousand happy endings to remind myself that I deserve happiness too.

What’s your favorite trope to READ?

I do love a good enemies-to-lovers or rivals-to-lovers. Which is probably also why these two appeal. There’s nothing like a slow, simmering burn either.

What’s your favorite trope to WRITE?

Probably angst with a happy ending or angst with a hopeful ending. I love breaking things and then mending them. Porn with plot is also clearly up there for me since I seem to struggle writing it without.

What’s your favorite Steddie fic?

It’s more pre-Steddie but @greatunironic has this amazing fic called all the missing girls are hanging out with us. Of course Grey is one of the steddie greats, and nearly everyone at least knows most remarkable thing exists even if they haven’t read it. But all the missing girls is a love letter to the “gone too soon” women of the show, and the vibes are impeccable. 

Is there a trope you’re excited to explore in a future work but haven’t yet?

I don’t think I’ve done a second chance romance yet for Steddie, and I do think there’s some juicy potential for them with that one.

What is your writing process like?

Sometimes it feels like I don’t really have one because it’s kind of chaotic, but uh… For starters, I use Scrivener and keep pretty much any WIP I have open in the same project file in the hopes I don’t forget things. I fiddle with different ideas until they either become full-fledged fics or they don’t. Sometimes I toggle between WIPs to let things marinate.  As for the process on each individual fic. I write them. I edit a little as I go. Then when I’m finished, everything gets at least two passes of editing. First pass of editing is to make sure everything makes sense, to try (TRY) to cut some extraneous shit, to catch any spots that I don’t really like how they sound, etc. I’m usually a “no beta, we die like…” on fanfic because I hate asking anyone for anything ever and should really get better at doing that. But if it’s a bang fic or something special, it might get passed to a beta after this.  For my final edit, I also have text-to-speech read my work back to me so I can hear how it sounds. Having it read back also increases the chances I’ll catch things like omitted/double words. 

Do you have any writing quirks?

Oh God, probably. I mean my complete inability to write PWP most of the time stands out. Style quirks are harder for me to notice in my own writing. Maybe that I love a good simile. Or that I love an interrupted moment in dialogue or to have a character trailing off when they speak. 

Do you prefer posting when you’ve finished writing or on a schedule?

I usually yeet things into the void the moment I think they’re done. If I have somehow managed to write a whole chaptered fic in advance, I will do a posting schedule for that.

Which fic are you most proud of?

For Steddie so far, Cut and Changed and Rearranged hands down. I put a lot of me into that one, and I have a lot of feelings about it. I’m also really proud of my Buckingham fic Where the Sunflowers Grow. 

How did you get the idea for Life or Something Like It?

I think we all have favorite stories in this world, ones that we pretty much always imagine into an AU every time we’re into a new ship. San Junipero is one of those for me. I remember crying my eyes out the first time I saw it, and I’ve seen it many times since. So it was less a spontaneous idea and more a culmination of how I might translate Steve and Eddie through a lens I often look through.

When writing Rip Me to Pieces and Make Me Whole, what was something you didn’t expect?

I think I always try to write PWP, and I always end up doing too much. Which is to say that I didn’t expect this fic to also explore Eddie trying to learn to communicate his needs within a relationship. And, hey! succeeding! But I think it might very likely be true that this is Eddie’s first real relationship. And we have a solid reason to believe this would only be Steve’s second. So while I am a hopeless romantic and a certified happy ending enjoyer 999/1000 times, I do think they’re going to have to learn a lot from each other and be willing to put in some work.  So yeah, sitting down to write this and realizing as it went that it was going to involve that communication aspect was interesting.

What inspired Blood, Sweat, Ambrosia?

I have slept many times since I wrote that one, but it was sort of that concept of “came back different.” And then the inherent eroticism of “could kill me but wants to fuck me instead.” 

What was your favorite part to write from The Prettiest Boy in Hawkins, Indiana?

It has to be when Eddie and Steve first see each other again and Eddie is fully being the most dramatically horny vampire to ever visit Indiana. Just “this creature was a theatre kid in another life” amped and vamped. Truly a “what if that guy who made speeches on the cafeteria table had even less impulse control?” moment.

How do/did you feel writing The Prettiest Boy in Hawkins, Indiana?

A level of unhinged joy for which “giddy” is not a strong enough word. 

What was the most difficult part of writing Cassiopeia, Orion, Bootes?

New Orleans is a really special city. I’ve only been there twice, but there’s something about it that stays with you. If you let it, it will romance you and make you feel like you’re being courted by something old and unknown. There’s a reason I came off my 2nd visit there and wrote two different fics in that setting. Then there’s bayous as an environment. If you’ve never been to a bayou at night or even at dusk, there’s a vibe there like all sorts of things might be lurking just beneath the murky surface.  So basically trying to translate all of that even for people who have maybe never been to either, to imbue the fic with those atmospheric feelings. I think they were really important to get right to make this fic hit, to have that eerie-meets-Something-More feeling coming through especially in the beginning. Otherwise you’ve just got Steve fucking Gator!Eddie, which like, good for them! But it wouldn’t be as impactful.

Do you have a favorite scene and/or line from any of your fics?

Steve having a full romance novel moment going to Eddie in the rain in Cut and Changed and Rearranged.  And of course, from The Prettiest Boy in Hawkins, Indiana: “Me? I’m the town freak, Steve Harrington. Was then, most definitely am now.” Eddie’s eyes go wide and wild. “Because me? Eddie Munson? Well, I’m a certified bloodsucking, cocksucking creature of the night.”

Do you have any upcoming projects or fics you’d like to share/promote?

I’ve resumed work on my postponed Steddie Big Bang fic from last year with Ori (@oriarts / @stevespookington) and welcome cheerleading. This one is deeply personal and features Steve and Eddie in their early 40s meeting while attempting to hike the Appalachian Trail. Slow burn, lots of hiker/trail lore, and Ori has some really cool stuff cooking for the art. 

Outside of these questions, Is there anything YOU would like to add?

I see a lot of people talk about being afraid to create the things they want to create because they’re worried that they’re too weird. I just want to say that I had those same fears for a long time, and then I finally got past them for the most part, and now I feel like I’m having more fun than ever. I’ve also learned that I’m a lot less weird than I thought I was. Life is short and can be so much shorter than we expect. Give yourself over to unbridled creativity. Create fearlessly. And go ahead and be a little freak about it while you’re at it. xoxo

Hey, this is an ask (from a fellow Kai fan) about your recent post about Kai’s mischaracterization in the fandom. That opening sounded like I’m about to disagree, my bad, idk how else to open.

But yeah, I’m kind of frustrated too. I really love Kai & Wyldfyre’s dynamic and do personally see them as some sorta familial dynamic, but not specifically father & daughter, if that makes sense. Just didn’t get that specific vibe from them and was a little surprised to see that when I started interacting with DR on tumblr. I just sorta went with it.

I’ve also noticed people acting like he never did anything wrong or claiming he was in the right early on in the show. Which is just something I personally find very frustrating because his flaws are one of the main reasons I find him compelling. He screws up, he can be a jerk, let him have flaws.

Also I wanna die a bit every time I see people act like he hates Jay or is overprotective of Nya and doesn’t approve of Jaya. He’s really not overbearing of his sister’s love life, and thank goodness for that. In season 1 with the SamX stuff he has to learn that she can manage herself, but that was more combat based than anything else. He literally says something along the lines of thinking he needed to protect her and admitting he was in the wrong for underestimating her. But again, that’s not over her love life. And it saddens me that the same thing is getting pushed to Wyldfyre/Roby. I just sincerely believe that he would never be overbearing over something like that. He makes mistakes sure, but I don’t think that’s one of em. And the people who say that act like it’s a good thing for him to do anyways.

Don’t worry dear anon I am a-okay with getting sent asks like this! I like chattin with people about fandom stuff. Especially in relation to topics I feel strongly about (i.e characterization of the faves). This ended up being kinda long so I'll put the rest of this under a read more. Complaining about fanon Kai ahead o7

That post seems to have really struck a cord with people, so I’m glad I’m not along in my frustrations with how a lot of people treat Kai as a character. I feel this way about all of the ninja to some degree, but they’d need their own separate posts.

Kai & WyldFyre are written with a family dynamic in mind I think, but that dynamic is definitely not a father daughter thing like you said. WyFy seems to already interpret family to be more nebulous in concept, or at least not something that is rigid in structure or label heavy like it is for other people. While I did say that HeatWave was her dad, I don’t think she’d necessarily think of it in that way specifically, just that he is her family. And the same goes for Kai. If I had to put a label on them it’d be something like a sibling/cousin whose significantly older then you but whom you still jive with, or like your favorite kooky uncle.

I also find it incredibly frustrating when people assign like cookie cutter overprotective older brother/dad to Kai. Especially in relation to Nya and WyFy’s relationships. I think it stems from the fact that a lot people think that Kai raised Nya. Which is just factually untrue, he was not old enough to raise Nya, their age difference isn’t big enough for that. In my opinion, they looked out for each other growing up in a mutual way. Like you said in canon itself he’s not really shown to be too involved with Nya’s relationships, and only really has overprotective moments when it comes to SamX. The only time I can think of where he gets mad at Jay for pursuing Nya romantically is in the pilots. When Jay hears that the sister of this guy he just met got kidnapped, and instead of like offering his condolences he asks if she’s hot. Which is a fair thing to get mad at I think. But like y’all Kai helps Jay propose to Nya, I think he’s fine with their relationship.

Same thing extends to Wyldfyre/Roby. I definitely think he’d tease them about it, older sibling traditions and all that, but he isn’t overbearing. This is mostly unrelated, but in my lil oppositeshipping brain I had a thought awhile back of like, Kai seeing how Wyfy behaves around Roby. Recognizing it as being extremely similar to how he’s reacted to having feelings for people in the past, and then being like “Uh-Oh”. And at some point he’s talking with Roby and just gets very serious all of sudden and goes “Hey man, never ever die.” and then moves on like that’s a normal thing to say. And I think Apollo hit me with his dodge-ball on that one, but THAT is neither here nor there.

And oh my god YES part of his appeal is that he’s a jerk. Dude full ass didn’t tell Jay that Nya had a perfume allergy because he thought it would be funny, there is something deeply wrong with him. I don’t think he’d do that now, but like he did do that. Kai can be kind of a snarky jackass at times, and that’s part of the appeal for me. I like my character’s with good and bad traits because that’s how you write good fucking characters.

I have a lot of Kai thoughts but it’s pretty late for me so I’m having trouble putting them into words ahgssfdsgd but like yeah idk no one gets him and it SUCKS
