Fates Entwined
Warnings: 18+ , mentions of sexual assault, abuse, death
Summary: You rescues 8 hybrids that are about to die.
word count: 7099
Masterlist
Next Chapter
The shelter workers dragged the beaten, bloodied, and half-conscious hybrid to a cell room, throwing him on the floor in front of 7 other hybrids.
"This was the third time he was returned," sneered the worker with greasy slick-backed hair, "that means he gets put down tomorrow. If you 7 don't agree to be adopted separately, you'll be joining him."
The shelter worker walked out of the room, slamming and locking the door while whistling cheerfully as he walked away. Meanwhile, the other 7 hybrids crowded around their friend on the floor, Seonghwa carefully lifting his head to place in his lap.
"Sannie," Wooyoung cries out, holding San's hand.
"Sannie, what happened?" Hongjoong asks, rubbing Sans arm gently.
"It was a hybrid fighting ring," San cries, refusing to open his eyes, not that he could open both, considering one his right eye was swollen shut, "I couldn't kill the other hybrids like they wanted, I'm sorry."
"It’s ok, Sannie," Yunho replies calmly.
"It's not ok, now they're going to kill you with me." San sobs uncontrollably, barely able to get the next words out, "I don't want you to die too."
"It's ok, San," Seonghwa whispers while cradling the crying man's head, not letting anyone see the tears spill from his own eyes. "Everything will work out, you'll see. We'll be ok."
The 8 hybrids stayed huddled together for a few minutes before they move to their beds, which were nothing more than flimsy blankets filled with holes. Slowly, one by one, they each begin to fall asleep, the younger 4 crying themselves to sleep while they older 4 held in their tears, too on edge to let themselves fall asleep, they flinch at every sound coming through the facility. When they heard two sets of footstep coming towards their cage, Yeosang tightens his hold on Jongho and Wooyoung while Seonghwa held San, and Yunho cradle Mingi, Hongjoong moves to sit in front of everyone, trying to block them from the view of whoever was approaching, with his small body.
Two workers appear in front of the cage, the greasy haired employee named Mike, and the employee with yellow teeth, missing his front one, called Carl. They enjoyed spending their time harassing the hybrids in the shelter, but their favorite targets were the group of 8. Mike stood by the door smirking as he looked over the huddled hybrids.
“Up front now!” Mike demands. Causing all 8 to jump and slowly line up by the door, kneeling on the ground. “I have some good news, we found homes for all of you, except San, he dies in the morning, no exception, but if you agree, you all get to live.”
“Seonghwa gets to go to a nice breeding farm or a brothel, we will let you pick,” Carl laughs as he reads off a paper, meanwhile Seonghwa grips his thighs tightly, holding back tears. “Yeosang will be going to the brothel, Ming and Yunho will be working in the mines to test for gas build up, Wooyoung, Jongho, and Hongjoong will be sent to medical labs as test subjects for new medications or some shit like that.”
“You hear that Seonghwa,” Mike says leaning down in front of the hybrid, “you’re the only one that gets a choice, now say thank you master.”
Seonghwa bit his lip, wanting to yell out and curse the two men, but not trusting his voice as he thinks about how everyone's lives will be ruined. Hybrids were made by humans, then abused, and abandoned by humans. Out of all the different types, rabbit hybrids were on of the most unique and one of the saddest hybrid stories. Scientists, for whatever reason, decided to make it so both female and males could be impregnated. It was wasn’t easy to get a male hybrid pregnant, and the pregnancies were extraordinarily difficult, but humans decided to make a game of it. They hosted insemination parties, bringing mass groups of men to try their luck at who could impregnate the poor hybrids for a prize. Then the rabbits were left to suffer through their pregnancy alone, only to go through it all again, if they survived giving birth.
Mike opens the door, walking in smugly as he looked at the hybrids kneeling on the floor, knowing that they wouldn’t attack him no matter what he did. He walks up and down the row, looking at each hybrid closely, paying attention to their features. Stopping in front of Hongjoong, Mike kneels and grabs his face, roughly turning it to each side before pushing away from him and standing. Before Hongjoong could take another breath, Mike grabs him by the hair yanking him to his feet and pinning him to the cage wall. Wrapping his hand around Hongjoongs throat, he lifts Hongjoongs small body up in the air, enjoying the feeling of how Hongjoong struggled for air, trying to free himself.
“Maybe you won’t go to a lab,” Mike laughs, licking, kissing, and biting what he could reach of Hongjoongs neck, grinding his hips against the hybrids, as he got excited by Hongjoongs whimpers and choking noises. “I think I’m going to take you to one of those sex parties, you know, the ones where a hybrid takes over 60 men in one night. What I wouldn’t give to see your broken and useless body afterwards, I wonder how squirrels compare to rabbits.”
“PLEASE STOP!” Seonghwa yells from behind them, unable to watch or listen to anything more, especially when he sees Hongjoongs face turning purple from the lack of oxygen, his grip on Mikes arm starting to loosen as his body grows limp. “PLEASE!”
Mike whips around and stares at Seonghwa before throwing Hongjoong onto the ground, kicking him in the ribs as he coughs and gasps for air. Stomping towards Seonghwa, Mike grabs Seonghwa by his ears, dragging him out of the cage and letting Carl slam the door shut before anyone could react. Pulling Seonghwa into the empty cell across the hall, Mike chains him to the wall. Carl moves out of the hybrids way so they can watch what's about to happen.
“I figured, you’re going to be used for breeding no matter what, that’s all you bunnies are good for anyway,” Mike sneers unbuckling his pants, “so I may as well get a taste of what you have to offer. Isn’t that what you wanted when you asked me to stop? You wanted to take his place, you wanted to be treated like a true bunny right.”
Mike grabs Seonghwa’s shirt and rips it open, while Seonghwa cries, unable to get his arms free from the shackles, shackles that were installed in every cage just in case a hybrid got out of control. Seonghwa opens his eyes and watches as his friends try to break their door open, crying and begging for Mike to stop, with no luck.
Mike undoes his pants and pulls himself out walking closer to the bound man.
“If you bite me, they all die instantly,” Mike laughs, lining himself up with Seonghwa’s mouth, “and after, Carl will want to take you for a spin.”
Just before Mike could touch his tip to Seonghwa’s mouth, they hear a yell from down the hall.
“Mike, Carl, we have a meeting, get your asses in here now!” Yells the owner of the shelter, leaving no room for arguing.
“That man always knows how to ruin the fun,” Mike growls to Carl while he zips himself up, “throw the bunny back in his cell, and let’s go.”
Carl unshackles Seonghwa and throws him in the cell with the others before they disappear, leaving Seonghwa to grip his torn shirt around himself while the others hug him, all of them sobbing uncontrollably.
“Maybe…maybe,” Jongho cries, unable to get his words out between sobs, “maybe death won’t be all that bad.”
No one responds at this point, understanding his feelings as they all feel the same. If they died, no more pain, torture, sexual harassment, or anything else. However, they still didn’t want to die, not really. Laying down and curling around each other, they wait for the death sentence that was coming for them in the morning.
“Wake up! Line up, standing, hands out!” Mike barks at the hybrids, waking them from their fitful sleep.
Each hybrid slowly moves into a line, dread filling their bodies as their wrists and ankles are shackled together and muzzles put over their faces. Soon, they are led down the hall to the euthanasia room, some not able to stop the sobs that rip from their throats.
“You’re going last,” Mike whispers in Seonghwa’s ear and he grabs Seonghwa’s ass. “You’re going to watch as each one of them dies, then, you’re coming home with me. You’re too good looking to not be filled every day. I’m going to make sure you have no energy to leave my bed. I’m also going to have frequent parties, 5 dollars for whoever wants to have you. But first, you have to watch all of your friends die,” he finishes laughing before locking Seonghwa in the waiting cage with everyone else, but San, shackling all the hybrids to the wall. The other 6 hybrids quickly move Seonghwa behind them as best they could, as far away from Mike as possible before turning their attention to San who is being strapped to the table, tears pouring out of his eyes as the technicians insert the needle into his arm.
“I don’t want to die,” San cries, when his muzzle is removed, eyes squeezed close tightly as tears stream down his face, his body bordering hyperventilating. “I don’t want to die and I don’t want them to die.”
“Wait!”
------------------------------------------- a few minutes earlier ----------------------------------
“I will see you in 30 minutes to an hour,” You say, parking your car outside the hybrid shelter. “It’s not a problem, don’t worry about it, I’m happy to help.”
You hang up your phone as you cross the parking lot, entering the shelter and walking to the front desk, looking down the hall to see a group of 8 hybrids crying as they are led into a dark looking room.
“How can I help you?” Asks the secretary after the door closes.
“I’m here to pick up some hybrid medication; it should be under the name Mrs. Roe.” You respond, leaning on the counter, “what was wrong with them?” You ask nodding your head towards where they hybrids disappeared.
“They’re being euthanized-“
“What the fuck?!” You ask, interrupting the secretary.
“They are being euthanized, they refuse to be adopted separately and one has been returned three times when he was forcibly adopted out.”
“How do I stop it?”
“You pay $3,000 and sign this paperwork that I already filled out, all it needs is a signature at the yellow flags,” the secretary replies hurriedly shoving a stack of papers at you.
“You were prepared,” you comment as you hand over your debit card and start signing by the flags, berating yourself for not actually reading the contract you’re currently signing.
“I’ve been hoping someone would come for them for a long time so I was prepared just in case. I’ve always been prepared just in case,” she says handing you the receipt as you pull out your phone and call someone.
“No more talking, let’s go,” you reply, gesturing for her to walk as you finish the paperwork. “Kim, how close are you to 5823 Rosedale Lane?” You ask into the phone.
“Few minutes why?” The voice, Josh Kim, answers over the phone.
“I’m calling in a favor, get your ass here now, bring backup, go past the front desk take a left, door at the end of the hall,” you say, hanging up.
Once you sign the last box, of the papers, the secretary opens the door and yells “Wait!” looking up you see a hybrid strapped to the table, crying as a man begins to attach a syringe to the needle in the hybrids arm.
“This woman adopted all 8 of the hybrids, the paperwork is signed and she already paid,” the secretary states quickly thrusting the papers at the men in the room.
“It’s too late,” the man with the syringe scoffs, as he goes back to what he was doing.
“Let me make this clear,” you growl, stepping forward, staring the man down, “you remove that needle from my hybrids arm right the fuck now, or I do, and shove through your fucking throat!”
The man glares at you and throws the syringe back on the tray before pulling the needle out carelessly. Meanwhile, you keep eye contact with the jackass as you approach the table and begin to undo the restraints on the hybrids arms and legs, helping him up. You turn around and see the other 7 hybrids still held in the cage.
“Release them and then take all 8 of them to the reception area please,” you ask the receptionist.
She nods and begins undoing the restraints to the wall of the caged hybrids, ushering them out of the room when they are freed, before a greasy haired man grabs the bunny hybrid by the ears, yanking him back and wrapping his arm around the poor hybrids throat.
“Seonghwa!” Someone yells from behind you, but you aren't sure who, and you don’t care to find out at this moment, though you can guess it was the hybrid on the table since the others are muzzled. Your eyes are glued to this man and your hybrid, that he decided to put in a choke hold.
“Get them out of here,” you say to the receptionist, as calmly as possible, not allowing your anger to get the best of you.
Once you hear the door shut, you begin to speak again.
“How many hybrids have you killed since last May?” You ask, slowly walking around, making sure to keep tabs on everyone in the room while also watching that this greasy haired bastard doesn’t hurt your hybrid. “Did you know that it is illegal to euthanize a hybrid that wasn’t terminally ill for the past year? Any hybrids euthanized since then are considered a murder charge. They passed that law last May…That means, every hybrid you fuckers euthanized, will be counted as murder. So tell me…how many have you killed?”
You stand by a door on the opposite side of the room from which you came in, grabbing the handle and opening it, only to get hit with the unforgettable smell of death and decomposition. You turn on the light and see dozens upon dozens of hybrid bodies piled up in the room before pulling the door shut.
“I count over 40 bodies in there now, which means it’s at least going to be 40 counts of murder and well as 8 attempted murders, and the police should be here any minute.”
“Fuck off bitch,” the man missing a tooth exclaims, spitting towards your feet.
Just then the door opens and multiple police enter the room, demanding everyone to freeze and put their hands in the air. You walk over to Josh, who is staring down the man holding the bunny and show him the adoption papers in your hand, pointing at the bunny’s name.
“You’re Seonghwa?” The Josh asks the bunny, earning a small nod from him. “Let him go, sir, or do I need to add assault to your list of crimes?”
“Mike, just let that damn thing go,” one of the other men yell, earning a scoff from Mike, before he throws Seonghwa to the ground.
Police quickly move in and cuff Mike, before leading everyone out of the room. You nod your head at the door, hiding the decaying hybrids, alerting Josh to go look in the room. You hear him cuss before the door slams shut, and he appears in front of you.
“Unfortunately, this is still happening,” he says. “Thanks for calling. Hopefully, I wasn’t too late.”
“Not for these ones. Thanks for getting here quickly, or I may have shot that bastard,” you reply shaking his hand, “see you later Josh.”
Josh nods and walks out of the room calling in the need for evidence teams and the counties coroner’s office to remove the bodies, leaving you to look down at Seonghwa. You look back at the table that the other hybrid was strapped to and see the keys that you used to unshackle your hybrid with. Grabbing the keys, you approach the scared bunny, keeping your hands in his view the entire time.
“I’m going to take the muzzle and cuffs off, ok?” You say, getting a small nod in reply.
Carefully, you remove the muzzle from his head, reaching behind him to undo the buckles, letting it fall to the ground as you examine the bruises beginning to form from it being bound to tight. You make quick work of the cuffs on his wrists and ankles, looking at the bruises forming there, frowning at how marked up he is. When you begin to look up, you notice his torn shirt, small tears made in it so that the front could be tied close.
“Wanna get out of here, Seonghwa?” You ask standing and holding your hand out to him. He meekly nods and shakily takes your hand, standing unsteadily.
The two of you walk out to the reception area where you see your other 7 hybrids, 6 of them still chained together and muzzled, while the one who was strapped to the table was free and hugging the fox hybrid, clinging to the fox like his life depended on it. As you approach, all seven hybrids eyes turn to you, watching you carefully.
“I’m going to take the muzzles and cuffs off,” you say holding up the key and approaching the closest hybrid, who tenses when your hand gets close to him.
Seonghwa practically clings to you the entire time you are removing the restraints from your hybrids, you assume so he can make sure you don’t hurt any of them. You notice the same problems on them that you did on Seonghwa; they are all bruised from the restraints being too tight.
“See that red SUV out in the parking lot,” you say to what you assume is a squirrel hybrid, based on the ears and tail, “will all of you go wait by it? I will be right out.”
He nods, and they exit the building, looking back at you every few steps as they walk away. You turn and walk to the reception desk, seeing the secretary sitting there looking around nervously as the police remove file after file from the cabinet. Grabbing the medication on the counter and your remaining paperwork, you give her some advice.
“Try to cut a deal with the district attorney, say you will testify to anything you can if they want.”
With that, you turn and walk to your car. On the way you pull out your phone and text your friend Marco, saying ‘Meet me at my house ASAP, bring your kit.’
“I didn’t expect to adopt 8 hybrids today,” you say looking at the group huddled around your car, “this only seats 7, so you two will have to sit on someone's lap until we get home.”
They nod and climb in, the squirrel and fox being the two that sit on someone’s lap. You throw your car in drive and make your way home, silently. You’ve never been good with talking to people, you never know what to say, and honestly would much rather be alone than be around others. Now you have 8 lifetime commitments sitting in your car and it’s a little daunting.
You’re unsure what to say to them, and continue to rehearse your introduction in your head. When you were about 10 minutes away from your home, you stop at a house and park the car.
“I’ll be back, I just need to drop this off real quick,” you say, holding up the box that you picked up from the shelter.
The hybrids don’t respond, and you get out of the car, approaching the house. Knocking on the door, you wait for the older lady to answer.
“Y/n, how are you,” Mrs. Roe asks as she answers the door, “thank you so much for picking this up for me. The vet called and they said that the medicine should be back in by the time it needs refilled, so you won’t have to pick it up for me again.”
Mrs. Roe motions for you to come in, and as you enter her home, you see her hybrid laying on the couch wrapped in blankets and sleeping soundly.
“He’s having a pretty bad flare-up and it doesn’t help that the doctor didn’t inform me that his medication was on back order and wouldn’t be coming in this month, which is why I had to hurry and find a place that has the medication in stock.”
“Well, I’m always happy to help. And if you need anything to help him through this flare just ask,” you respond, setting the box on her kitchen counter, smiling as you watch her adjust the blankets surrounding her hybrid. You appreciated that she treated him as though he was no different than she was and did whatever she could to make him happy. When she walks back into the room, Mrs. Roe tries to hand you cash for the medicine.
“Oh, no, I don’t need that,” you say refusing the cash, “it wasn’t that much anyway.”
“Well, then at least take this,” she replies, turning away from you to pick up a freshly baked apple pie, which from previous experience, you know is to die for. “I have to thank you some way.”
“I will be more than happy to be paid back in food, you are an amazing cook and I will never turn down a meal.” You happily take the pie from her, noticing that the pan is still warm but not hot enough that you can’t hold it with your bare hands. “I really need to get going, but thank you for this.” You say as you begin to leave.
In the car
“What’s going to happen to us?” Mingi asks, clutching Yunho’s hand in a death grip.
“I don’t know, Mingi.” Hongjoong replies, staring at where you disappeared into the house.
“Whatever happens, we will be together,” Yeosang whispers, with a slight tremble of nervousness in his voice, his lisp becoming more pronounced due to his stress.
The car quiets once again as they watch you exit the house carrying something in your hands. You carefully open the door and sit down, realizing you have nowhere to put the pie with everyone in the car.
“I can hold it,” the fox hybrid whispers to you and you just smile handing him the food, saying a quiet thank you back to him.
Once you leave, it’s as quiet as it was before. You can feel the nervousness in the air and can’t think of what to do to break the tension, so you just stay quiet. It only takes 10 minutes to make it to your house, a giant home that looks as though it stretches as far as the eyes can see. As you pull in the driveway, you see Marco sitting on your front steps waiting for you.
“Welcome home,” you say to everyone, picking up all of the paperwork and files you got from the shelter, you turn to the fox and ask, “Can you carry that inside for me?”
“Yes,” he whispers.
You walk to the front steps, letting the hybrids get out at their own pace, understanding that this is probably overwhelming to them.
“Hey Marco, thanks for coming so quickly,” you say as you approach him.
“Y/n, what is so important that you had to call me on my day off,” he grunts in reply.
“I adopted 8 hybrids, they were about to be euthanized, and they are bruised from the restraints, one has other injuries, they also look pretty malnourished. I wanted you to look them over but figured it would be too stressful to suddenly show up at a doctor’s office.”
Digging through the stacks of paper you are holding you pull out their medical records and hand them to Marco to read through. As he begins reading, you turn around and see all eight hybrids standing behind you fidgeting and looking around the front yard.
“Let’s go in,” you say, sweeping your arm forward and leading them into the house. You watch as they remove their shoes and lead them to the living room. “Marco is a doctor, he’s going to give you a checkup and treat any injuries you may have. You can sit,” you motion to the couch and chairs, “I will be in the kitchen.”
“Wait!” Seonghwa yells, stopping you, “please don’t go. Please stay.”
“Ok,” you say, smiling and nodding before sitting on a chair, “I will stay here and read while you get a checkup, if at any time you are uncomfortable, you can ask to stop.”
While Marco examined them, you open the files, they were fairly sparse with very little information. The first up was Hongjoong.
Hongjoong – Squirrel hybrid
26 years old
Found wandering the streets, emaciated, angry
Personality issues, stubborn, clumsy, not good at anything – likely unadoptable
You look up and see the squirrel hybrid, he’s blonde with grey ears and tail, and he has perfect teeth from what you’ve seen so far, pillowy lips, and a sleek nose. He stood on guard watching every movement Marco made. Looking back down you flip the page to Seonghwa.
Seonghwa – Rabbit hybrid
27 years old
Found chained to a fence, starving and emaciated, abandoned by owners for refusing to participate in an insemination party, attacked everyone that tried to touch him.
Personality issues neurotically clean – likely unadoptable
Seonghwa was also a blonde with bright white ears, his hair was short with buzzed sides underneath. He had boba like eyes and high cheekbones, with a sharp nose
Yunho – Golden Retriever Hybrid
26 years old
Rescued with Mingi, both of them were neglected by their owner and starved on the regular, both also showed signs of abuse. – co-dependent, likely unadoptable
Yunho had golden ears and the gold on his tail was matted from neglect, his hair was a dark brown and he was smiling at the others, trying to cheer them up and make them feel more comfortable.
Yeosang – Doberman Hybrid
25 years old
Found chained in a junk yard with no shelter, sick with multiple broken bones, surrendered for not being able to ‘protect anything properly.’
Personality issues, too quiet, and shy – likely unadoptable
He had a mark on the side of his face, probably a birth mark that fit him well for some reason. His hair was dark reddish brown and he had delicate features.
San – Black Jaguar hybrid
25 years old
Returned three times, the first he complained about his owner not leaving him and Wooyoung alone and trying to touch them inappropriately without their permission, the second he was adopted alone and returned because he was too clingy and the owners wanted a guard hybrid, the third time he was returned by a hybrid fighting ring for refusing to fight the other hybrids. His personality is defective and he will be euthanized.
Personality issues, too clingy, scared of everything – unadoptable
San had cat like eyes that fit the hybrid that he was, and jet black hair. He was muscular, well built, which you wondered if it was from his hybrid genetics or hard work, or a mix of both.
Mingi – Chick hybrid
25 years old
Personality issues, clumsy, scared of his own shadow, co-dependent, - likely unadoptable
Mingi had eyes that made him look like an emoji, eyes that were wide and filled with almost a childlike fear. His hair was black, and he looked to be 6 feet tall.
Wooyoung – Fox hybrid
25 years old
Surrendered with San, shelter employees were told by San that the owner tried to touch them inappropriately multiple times.
Personality issues, too loud, clingy, and rambunctious. Talks back too much, owners will not like him – likely unadoptable
He had reddish orange hair with shaggy bangs, a prominent nose, and mischievous face, though also a face that looked sweet.
Jongho – Bear hybrid
24 years old
Origins unknown, was found passed out at the front of the shelter
Personality issues, standoffish, can be aggressive, becomes lazy in winter during typical bear hibernation time – likely unadoptable
He had dark brown hair, a cute round face, and small nose.
“All done,” Marco said removing his glove and putting it in the garbage bag you gave him earlier. “We can talk outside about the results now, or you could wait until the blood tests come back.”
“I’d like to know now if everyone is ok with you telling me,” you reply to Marco before turning to the hybrids, “knowing if anything is wrong will let me know what treatments you may need.”
“It’s ok, you can know,” Hongjoong whispers for the first time to you, while the others nod.
“Right, so,” Marco starts, looking at his notes to make sure he repeats everything correctly, “Everyone is malnourished and needs more food, all also have bruises and small cuts. The only ones that have major issues are Hongjoong and San, both have bruises and contusions, possible fractured ribs. San also has a swollen knee, I think it is a soft tissue injury, just keep an eye on it for now, here are some pain meds, and if his knee is too overworked, it could give out, maybe get a brace. Then there is Seonghwa who has eczema, potentially stress induced, it’s hard to tell right now, we will have to check up later. Best treatment now would be a corticosteroid ointment or we have pills, and injectable meds. Finally, there’s Yeosang, he has a lisp and hand tremor, these could be benign or they could be something more, again, could be stress induced, just keep an eye on it and let me know if it gets worse. Now, what kind of meds do you want for Seonghwa?”
You watched the hybrids closely as the doctor mentioned each issue. They all flinched and curled in on themselves as if ashamed of the issues.
“Seonghwa,” you say getting the rabbits attention, watching him jump at the mention of his name, “what kind of treatment would you like to try?”
“I…I don’t…what?” He asks, looking at the others for help.
“This is your body, your health, you get to choose what type of treatment you would like to have, and if it works great, if it doesn’t we will move on to the next.”
“Um…oin…ointment please.”
“Ok, then we will start with that,” You confirm, looking at Marco, who nods in response.
“I will have it delivered tomorrow and let you know when the results come in,” he says, standing and walking to the door, bidding you goodbye before leaving.
You shut the door and wait in front of it, taking a deep breath before turning and walking to your hybrids.
“So…how about I show you where you will be staying?” You ask, watching them carefully. They all fidget, and Jongho slowly nods yes. “Perfect, follow me.” You say, leading them through the house, to the kitchen, “here is the kitchen, help yourself to any and all food that you want. Outside the kitchen, beyond the patio is a pool, if you’d like to swim, and this way is where your rooms are.” You say as you lead them to the steps, San following you the closest out of everyone, when his knee seemingly gives out and he falls, you were lucky that you watched him so closely because you were able to catch him before he fell. “It’s ok,” you say softly as you drag him to the step for him to sit on while he grips his knee and whimpers in pain. “I have your pain meds. Once we get you to your room, I’ll give them to you, then get you food, ok?” You ask, earning a small nod and whimper. You turn to the rest of the boys and ask, “Can one of you get an ice pack from the freezer and another help me carry him up the stairs?”
Yeosang races off to the kitchen while both Yunho and Mingi step forward to help carry San up the stairs. You walk behind them with your arms out, ready to brace them if they begin to fall, knowing that you will be going down with them if they fall. Once you reach the top of the stairs, Yeosang comes sprinting up the stairs with an ice-pack, and you usher everyone to the room across from the stairs.
“You can stay in this room,” you say, directing San to a bed, lifting his leg, and propping it up on a pillow before getting a towel to roll the ice pack in, then placing it over his knee. “I am in the room across the hall, diagonal to this. All of you can have your own room, and you get to choose any room you want. San, you don’t have to stay in this room if you don’t want to, you can look at the others, I just ask that you wait a day for your knee to recover before you start looking.” You pull out a pill and put it in his hand before getting a glass of water from the bathroom. “All of you are welcome to bathe, in hot water, if you’d like, and I will try to get some clean clothes for you. Tomorrow, or later, we can go clothes shopping and get you your necessary supplies. I’ll go get you some rice, then cook everyone dinner, ok.”
You stand and walk to the door before turning around.
“I would like all of you to choose your own room, everyone deserves to have their own space. However, if you want to sleepover in someone else’s room, that is fine with me, I don’t care, this is your home as well, and I want all of you to be comfortable, I will be making bulgogi, broccoli, and rice tonight.” With that you walk out and go to the kitchen to cook.

Once you walked out of the room, the hybrids turned to each other, Wooyoung scrambling onto the bed to cuddle with San, while the others sit down around him, Seonghwa crawling to San’s other side.
“She seems nice,” Seonghwa whispers, breaking the silence.
“What if she’s just acting that way and will do something later,” Mingi also whispers, while tugging on his hair, close to having a panic attack.
“Then we’ll deal with that later,” San replies, beginning to fade away, the stress, and pain meds making him tired. “We aren’t dead, she saved us, I’m scared, but I also, don’t want to ruin a potentially good thing.”
Before anyone can respond a knock comes from the door, the hybrids just stare but it doesn’t open, finally Yunho speaks up.
“Co-come in,” he says, trying to steady his voice.
The door opens and what looks like a chair and pile of clothes with legs walks in, setting everything down in the living room.
“Ok, so here are some clothes from my closet, Mingi and Yunho, I have oversized shirts that should fit, but my pants will be capris on you. Each bathroom has shampoo, conditioner, soaps, and towels, as well as toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, and hair brushes. San, here is a chair that can be set in your shower so you don’t have to stand on that leg. Also, there are scrubbies for your body in each bathroom. Oh, about dinner, I don’t have regular beef for the bulgogi, so it will be ground beef bulgogi and should be ready in about 45 minutes. So, why don’t you clean up and I can bring it up here, or we can work to carry San downstairs, I should have some crutches around here somewhere.” As you begin to leave, you stop again and turn back to them, “My name is Y/N, I adopted you, and I’m sure you don’t trust me yet, seeing what was about to happen and reading your files, I can only begin to imagine why you wouldn’t trust me. However, you are safe here, I will never knowingly hurt you, I swear I will protect you, and I hope, that one day, you will come to understand that I truly mean that…Ok, I will get going.”
With that, you walk out, leaving the clothes and everything in their room and hybrids stunned in silence behind you.
“Let’s, uh, let’s clean up,” Hongjoong says, standing and looking through the clothes on the chair, giving the biggest ones to Yunho and Mingi, while the others look through what’s on the pile. Suddenly, Seonghwa gasps as he reaches for a shirt, snatching it quickly and pulling something from the back of it, which seems to be stuck by static.
“Do you think she’d let me wear this?” He asks, holding up a feminine shirt, hope glimmering in his eyes with excitement at the prospect.
“Yes,” Jongho states, watching the elder hybrid. “I…I don’t trust her fully, that will…take time. But I believed her when she said she wouldn’t hurt us…I…believe her.” He finishes, blushing as everyone stares at him, knowing the bear hybrid is least likely to believe or trust anyone. “I’m going to go find a room and shower.” He yells as he runs out of the room, face bright red.
“I will set the chair in the shower,” Seonghwa says, as he smiles, watching where the bear ran out of the room. He jumps up and takes the chair, placing it in a giant shower stall before looking around and playing with the dual showerheads. Walking back into the room, he clears his throat. “I’m not shy, I know some of you are, but I don’t feel comfortable leaving San alone to shower. The shower can fit all of us and has two showerheads.” He begins before turning to San, “I would like to help you, I don’t even have to face you, I just need to know that you won’t fall, that you will be ok, th-“
“Seonghwa,” Hongjoong interrupts.
“No, he’s my baby, they are all my responsibility and I failed each of them now San is hurt and I can’t let him be alone,” Seonghwa says almost panicking.
“Hyung,” San begins to say.
“What if you fall, whatifyouslipandbreakthroughtheglassandbleedoutinthebathroom, what if-“
“HYUNG,” Yeosang yells holding Seonghwa’s face in his hands as he tries to calm the older down.
“I should have protected all of you, I’m the oldest,” Seonghwa cries out, falling to his knees, hugging himself.
“You did protect us, remember how you sacrificed yourself last night to save Joongie?” Yeosang asks, rocking Seonghwa side to side, “You saved us, you always saved us.”
“You can help me hyung,” San says, “I’m really tired and don’t want to be alone, I would be happy if you help me.”
Seonghwa looks over at San and nods, drying his eyes as he sniffles and tries to compose himself. Before he can say anything, there is a knock on the door, the hybrids saying come in at the same time. You pop your head in seeing Seonghwa and Yeosang on the floor and more than one hybrid crying.
“Is everything ok?” You ask watching their reactions.
“Yes,” Yunho replies, “we were just talking.”
“Ok…if you need anything just ask,” You say, nodding as you shut the door again, “oh, I brought San my old crutches to help with his knee…I’ll just…put them here.”
You place the crutches down then walk out again, not wanting to push the hybrids into talking or making them uncomfortable.
After a few moments, each hybrid stands up, taking their clothes to the shower to clean up, while Seonghwa helps a sleepy San into his shower, standing behind him with his back turned, while both relish the feeling of hot water and soap to scrub their bodies. Feeling the grime and oil come out of their hair as they clean. What feels like hours, but is really only 15 minutes, both hybrids are drying off and applying lotion to their skin before brushing their teeth and getting dressed, after a half an hour, they enter San’s bedroom to find 8 dinner trays, with complete meals covered in the room, all with names on each tray. San hobbles over to one chair and tray and lifts the lid, salivating at the smell of food, looking at Seonghwa with pleading eyes, begging to let him start eating. Seonghwa chuckles and nods, watching San devour his food, like he’s never eaten before. Soon, the others come trickle in, their stomachs growling as each goes to their trays. All of them notice that each tray has appropriate food based on their animal needs, San has the most protein, while Seonghwa has the most veggies. Meanwhile, Jongho and Hongjoong have a large side of berries and nuts.
Once everyone finishes, they are unable to keep their eyes open, all crawling into San’s bed and configuring themselves to all fit together in the king sized bed, passing out as soon as their eyes shut.
You waited two hours before heading upstairs, you knock quietly on the door, and open it after no answer, seeing all the hybrids asleep in the room makes you smile as you take multiple trips removing their food trays. Once the trays were cleaned and put away, you head to bed, exhaling as your head hits the pillow and you your eyes shut within seconds.
A few hours later, your eyes snap open, the feeling of being watched creeping over you. As fast as you can you jump up and spin around, seeing San standing there on his crutches, looking like he doesn’t know if he should run or stay.
“San,” you ask, rubbing your eyes, relaxing your posture, “is everything ok?”
“Um…yes,” he replies, “I…um…can I…may I…can I sleep with you tonight?” he quickly says, shutting his eyes so he doesn’t have to see your face.
“Of course,” you state, moving over and patting the bed next to you, watching as he stares in awe then hobbles over to share your sleep space.
He snuggles in carefully, a smile on his face, before he falls back asleep. You watch him for a minute then drift off as well. Maybe 8 hybrids won’t be so bad.

Something’s Fishy…

finnick odair x fem!reader (h2o: just add water modern AU!) content warnings: none! summary: finnick's suspicious wc: 1.2k
masterlist.
Something was off.
Finnick noticed it somewhere between third period and lunch.
It wasn’t just that you’d bailed on chemistry class—again—or that you hadn’t answered any of his texts from the night before. It was the way you were holding yourself. Like your skin didn’t quite fit anymore.
You were always easy to spot: curled up on the edge of the outdoor tables, hoodie pulled tight even though it was easily eighty degrees out. You barely touched your food. Just picked at it like you were waiting for someone to call you away.
Finnick slid into the seat beside you, sunglasses pushed up into his hair, tray in hand. He bumped his knee against yours, casual, familiar. Testing.
“You didn’t show up to chem,” he said, watching the way you didn’t meet his eyes.
“Had a headache,” you said, like it was nothing.
“Third one this week.”
You shrugged, poking at a sandwich you clearly didn’t want.
He tilted his head slightly, studying you. “You okay?”
“Totally. Just tired.”
It wasn’t a lie. But it wasn’t the truth either. He could feel it.
Then a group of kids ran by, laughing, and one of them sprayed water from a plastic bottle like a squirt gun. A few droplets landed near you. Not even on you—but you jumped like it had been ice water dumped straight down your back.
“Jeez,” Finnick said, startled. “You good?”
“Yeah!” Your voice cracked, just a little. “It was cold.”
He frowned. You were usually steady—cool under pressure, unflappable. Whatever this was… it wasn’t just stress or a bad mood.
He watched you quietly for the rest of lunch, cataloging every strange detail. You flinched when someone opened a soda can too fast. You sat with your arms folded like you were afraid to move. You kept glancing up at the sky, like you were tracking the sun.
Later that day, he found you by the bike racks, hood pulled over your head even though the air was still heavy with heat. You looked like you were trying to disappear into the wall.
He stepped up beside you and leaned against the brick.
“You’ve been acting weird all week,” he said finally.
You didn’t look up. “Weird how?”
He crossed his arms. “You’ve been avoiding the pool, skipping class, bolting every time someone mentions water, and don’t think I missed the jump-scare at lunch.”
You gave a weak laugh. “Maybe I just don’t like swimming?”
He raised an eyebrow. “You used to live in the pool. You taught me how to dive, remember? Last summer, I practically had to drag you out before your fingers pruned off.”
“Things change,” you said quickly.
Finnick watched you carefully, lips pressed together. You were good at dodging. You always had been. But now? He could tell you were hiding something.
“If something’s going on-”
“I’m fine.”
You were already walking away before he could finish. The bell rang, and just like that, you were gone—melting into the crowd like a ghost.
He stood there a second longer, eyes narrowed.
You were lying. He was sure of it now.
And Finnick Odair didn’t like not knowing why.
So he was going to find out why.
That night, Finnick sat at his desk with a notebook open, a pen tapping against his lips.
He wasn’t doing homework. Not really.
At the top of the page, he'd scrawled:
Acting weird. Timeline?
Beneath it was a messy list of bullet points:
Last pool party: left early, said “too cold” → 82°F water??
Skipped 3 chem labs → always when we work with liquids
Lunch (Mon): flinched at spilled water
Lunch (Today): full body jump
Hoodie in May???
He paused, then added:
Refuses beach invites. Said she was “busy.” Twice. It’s her favorite place??
Finnick leaned back in his chair, spinning the pen between his fingers. This wasn’t normal. He knew you better than anyone—had since middle school, when you used to drag him into the tide pools with your bare feet and salt-stained laugh.
You loved water. Always had.
Now? You acted like it would burn you.
He didn’t want to jump to conclusions, but…
No. Scratch that.
He grabbed a fresh page and wrote at the top: POSSIBLE THEORIES
Medical condition?? (But no visible symptoms…)
Trauma?? (But she’d talk to me, wouldn’t she?)
Paranormal? (lol... but seriously, wtf was that flinch today?)
He stared at the third bullet point for a long time. Then drew a little water droplet next to it. And then—just to entertain the idea—a tail.
Finnick snorted to himself and shook his head. “Come on, Odair. Get a grip.”
Still, he didn’t cross it out.
Instead, he leaned forward again and pulled out his laptop. If you weren’t going to tell him what was going on, he’d figure it out himself.
Just like always.
He thought he was. But anyone who’d known him longer than a week knew the look he got when he was scheming. That bright-eyed, lopsided-smirk thing. The same look he’d worn in fifth grade when he hacked the school vending machine with a paperclip.
So when he sat down next to you the next morning with a little too much enthusiasm in his step, you knew something was up.
“Hey,” he said, casual. “Sleep okay?”
You eyed him warily. “Fine?”
He nodded like that meant something. Then reached into his bag and pulled out two bottles of water, handing one to you.
You hesitated.
His smile sharpened just slightly. “Didn’t see you bring one. Thought you’d want it. You always forget.”
You took it, trying not to let your fingers tremble. The plastic was slick with condensation.
“Thanks,” you said. You didn’t drink it.
Finnick opened his and took a long sip. You just twisted yours open slowly, then set it down on the table.
Finnick didn’t say anything. Just watched.
Later in biology, he leaned over during lab and “accidentally” spilled a beaker. Just a little splash. Right in your direction.
You jerked back like he’d dropped acid.
“Oh- crap, sorry!” he said, too quickly, reaching for paper towels.
You were already dabbing your sleeve dry with the corner of your hoodie. “It’s fine,” you muttered, but your voice had gone tight. Finnick noticed.
He also noticed the way you kept checking the clock after that, fidgeting in your seat like you needed to be anywhere else but near water.
By lunch, Finnick had seen enough to confirm one thing: You were definitely hiding something.
He sat across from you at the outdoor table, sunglasses on, arms folded, a knowing grin tugging at the edge of his mouth.
“What?” you said, chewing defensively on a granola bar.
He didn’t answer. Just took a long drink from his bottle and gave you a look.
You narrowed your eyes. “Why are you acting like you know something?”
He shrugged. “I don’t know anything. But I’m starting to think you’ve got a secret.”
You went still, the way a deer does when it hears the snap of a twig.
Finnick leaned in, voice soft. “You can tell me, you know. Whatever it is.”
You blinked once. Then stood up, grabbed your tray, and walked off without a word.
Finnick exhaled, shoulders sinking a little. He hadn’t meant to spook you.
But damn if he didn’t want to know the truth now more than ever.

Forever Young Part 4
Hey guys! We are back with this amazing fic! Since it's been a bit I'd recommend reading the last chapter: here or the from the beginning: here.
Pt 1 Pt 2 Pt 3
A bit of a longer chapter with lots of twists and turns and a brief cameo of Joyce and Hopper.
~
Will and Dustin looked at each other and sighed heavily.
“I forgot that there is a distinct messy side to science,” Dustin said, putting his hands on his hips and looking at the bags and bags of garbage out by the garage.
“Let’s see if we can’t find gardening gloves or whatever to protect us...” he waved at the piles with a grimace, “from all of that.”
“Good idea,” Dustin agreed. “There is bound to be broken bottles in there and I really don’t have the desire to call Wayne about needing a ride to the hospital, thanks.”
They found gloves and got to work. They sorted out the bags that were clearly from earlier in the week and focused on the two bags that were the most likely culprits for being from last night.
“So I’m just seeing beer and joint butts,” Will said about twenty minutes later. “How about you?”
Dustin sighed and pushed his bag away. “A whole lot of nothing. Like chip bags and other junk food detritus, no real heavy alcohol or anything that might mix badly with the weed.”
Will nodded. “It just seems like their every day party with out us underaged teenagers. Different kinds of soda and other drinks but nothing that screams body altering drugs.”
He got to his feet and dusted off his knees. “This was a complete bust.”
Dustin got up too. “I don’t think so. Yeah, we didn’t find anything, but that means that it wasn’t drug or alcohol related. That’s something we cross off the list.”
“I suppose,” Will sighed as he pulled off his gloves. “Let’s go tell everyone we didn’t find anything.”
“Let’s hope Dr. Owens has some ideas,” Dustin agreed, pulling off his gloves too. “But I’m plumb out.”
The other four kids were sitting on the sofa, talking among themselves.
“Sorry, guys,” Dustin said flopping on the arm chair, while Will sat cross-legged on the floor. “That was a bust. All they had last night was the usual stuff to get high and drunk.”
“Ours was unfruitful as well,” El said with a sigh. “Dr. Owens said that they had never encountered physical regression before. But he’ll look into it further and call back. I worry he may want to take blood tests.”
“He can fuck off back to whatever hole he crawled out of,” Mike growled. “I’m not letting them do to Nancy what they did to El. I don’t care.”
Lucas put his hand on Mike’s arm. “And we won’t let them either. Especially with Wayne knowing what’s going on. I have a feeling that if they tried to take Eddie, he’d storm the lab with nothing but a shotgun and enough ammo take on a third world country.”
Mike straightened and blinked for a moment. “Oh, yeah. He’d go all Rambo on their ass. Huh. That does make me feel better. Thanks!”
“No problem,” Lucas said with a smile. “Plus if we add El and Erica to the mix, the lab would be razed the ground in seconds.”
El just batted her eyelashes at them sweetly.
“So we’ve got absolutely nothing,” Dustin said with a heavy sigh. “The lab was no help, the garbage was no help. They can’t tell us what went wrong. We’re pretty much stuck until something else happens.”
“Pretty much!” Mike huffed, throwing his head back against the couch cushion. “This sucks. I’ve looked up to Nancy my whole life and after the monsters I’ve admired what a badass she was. But that little girl isn’t the Nancy I grew up with. Like she knows she’s going to be a big sister, but she doesn’t understand what that means right now. For her it’s diaper changes and bottle feeding. Not being a reporter and shotguns.”
There was a creak on the stairs leading down to the basement and everyone looked over expecting Steve as he had slept earlier, but no it was Little Jonathan.
“I need to go to the bathroom,” he whispered shyly, sucking on his thumb.
Will was on his feet in an instant. One of the things that Lonnie liked to yell about either of his sons was that they were too soft. That they needed toughening up. The fact that Little Jonathan was still sucking his thumb at this age was sure sign that Lonnie was an ass and that there was no doubt he had hit his son for trying to get comfort somewhere in this big, wide world.
“Come with me,” he said gently. “I’ll take you to the one up here and then show you where the one downstairs is so you if you spend the night you know where it is, okay?”
Little Jonathan nodded, taking Will’s hand. Will led the way and as he was about to close the door behind the toddler, Little Jonathan looked up him and cocked his head.
“Will the Wise,” he said solemnly. “You’ll find someone who loves you for you some day.” Then he toddled into the bathroom and closed the door, leaving a very stunned Will staring at the wooden surface.
When Little Jonathan came out he didn’t seem to remember what he said before going into the bathroom. So Will just led him back to the living room where the teens were gathered.
“Hey there, buddy,” Lucas said with a soft smile. “Did you want to try to go back to sleep or did you want to color until everyone else woke up?”
“M’mm awake...” came the slurred voice of Little Eddie from the floor. “Just restin’ my eyes.” He sat up sort of cross-legged and rubbed his eyes.
Max giggled. “Sure are, big guy. All bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.”
Then Little Robin came in, hair a mess and drool all over her face. “I’m thirsty, can I get some water?”
“Sure!” Will said, his voice cracking. “El won’t you take them to the kitchen, I’m sure Eddie and Jonathan are thirsty too.”
El looked at him curiously, head cocked to the side. Then she nodded. “Come on, everyone hold hands like they did for lunch.”
The kids did as they were told and El took Little Robin’s hand to lead them into the kitchen.
The kids ooh’ed and awed when El used her powers to get the glasses down from the cupboard because it was too high for her to get.
“Cups are easy,” Little Robin said with a giggle. “She can throw cars with her mind, too!”
El froze and the cup headed for Little Eddie stopped too.
“Supergirl!” Little Eddie agreed, clapping his hands and reaching out for the cup. It took everything El had to let go of the cup so that Eddie could take it.
“You should see her fly a helicopter!” Little Jonathan crowed. “It’s so cool!”
She watched them in wide-eyed amazement as they didn’t seem to understand what it was they just said. They just happily drank the water given to them and then handed the cups back to her. She put them in the sink and then led them back out to the living room.
There was Little Nancy and Little Steve sitting on the floor with their heads together, playing tic-tac-toe as they waited for the other kids to come back.
“I think they’re getting some of them memories back,” El said bluntly. “But only in spurts.”
“I agree,” Dustin said putting his hands on his hips. “But when it does happen, it doesn’t stick around for long. Just a memory and then it’s gone.”
Max narrowed her eyes and then cocked her head back and forth. “Well you want to know what I think? I think we should just let them be kids for awhile.”
“What?” Lucas cried, springing to his feet. “We need them as adults!”
“And that’s the problem!” Max snapped back, getting to her feet, too. “We rely on them too much. When do they get to be kids? Especially Jonathan, Steve, and Nancy. They were our age when they first met the Upside Down, when do they get to shirk their duties and have fun?”
Mike grabbed both Lucas and Max and started pushing them toward the hall, but before he could even get them turned around, Little Jonathan and Little Robin burst into tears. Mike closed his eyes.
“I was trying to avoid that,” he hissed through clenched teeth. “Please take this argument elsewhere. Dustin and El, too. They don’t need to hear this.”
There was a lot of shouting and protesting as even more of the kids started to cry.
Suddenly there was a piercing whistle from the doorway to the hall. All the teens stopped arguing even though the kids kept crying. They turned to the door and there was Joyce and Hopper standing there. Hopper had his fingers to his lips, pointing to him as the cause of the whistle.
The teenagers stared at them in shock and maybe a little bit of fear too. They were so busted.
“Where did you lot get a bunch of children?” Hopper groused. “I don’t think I’d let any of ya babysit for love or money.” He crossed his arms over his chest.
Joyce smacked his chest. “Jim!” she cried in amusement.
Suddenly Little Jonathan broke from the crowd of children and dashed straight for Joyce’s legs.
“Mommy!”
Joyce scooped him up out of habit and then froze. “All my babies are grown up, little one.”
Will and El shared a grimace.
Little Jonathan traced a scar on her chin. “Daddy did that. I’m sorry, Mommy.”
Joyce and Jim both went wide-eyed.
Joyce moved Little Jonathan to her hip to get a better look at the little boy in her arms. “Jonathan?”
The little boy nodded.
Of course the other kids were still screaming so Mike and Lucas each grabbed one of the girls to calm down first. Mike took Nancy and began cooing a lullaby. She hiccuped softly, her sobs slackening until they stopped all together.
Hopper waded in and picked up the two boys, bouncing each on his hip. El immediately stood up and grabbed Little Steve from him so he could focus on getting the one quiet. El reading Little Steve’s mind to find a song that would calm him and started humming that.
Once everyone had stopped screaming and Joyce was over her shock, she sat down on the sofa, her son in her arms.
“Will, what’s going on?” she asked her other child.
“We don’t know,” Will huffed. “We know it’s not Upside Down related. El and I checked, but they just woke up like that.”
“They?” Hopper said, looking closer at the child in his arms. “Holy shiiiiivvva,” he said changing the last word at the last second.
“What’s a Shiva?” the little boy asked, cocking his head to the side and looking up at him with chocolate button eyes.
“Shiva is an Indian god,” Hopper huffed. “With too many arms and lots of rage issues.”
“So holy Shiva makes sense,” Little Eddie said solemnly, nodding. “Uncle Wayne said not to swear because they’re big people words. Can I say holy Shiva instead of cussing?”
“Sure, kid,” Hopper said with a huff of laughter.
“Oh no,” Joyce said softly. “If that’s Eddie, and this is Jonathan are those...?”
Will sighed putting his head in his hands.
“I’m afraid so Mrs. Byers,” Dustin said, putting his hands on his hips. “Steve was the first one found like this, then Nancy and Jonathan. We assumed, rightly unfortunately, that Robin and Eddie were affected, too.”
“Does Wayne know about his nephew’s cute-ifaction?” Hopper asked.
Max chewed on her thumbnail. “I think he was the first to know, but didn’t reach out to the rest of us because he didn’t know it had happen to the others, too.”
Hopper set Little Eddie down. “Sounds like you’ve got a bit of a mess. Especially since the reason Joyce and I stopped by is that we’ve got to head out of town for a bit. We were hoping to make sure Steve was aware he had to keep an eye out for you lot.”
“I’m not sure we can leave knowing the older teens are kids now,” Joyce said, holding Jonathan to her chest.
Hopper just shook his head. “I’d agree with you, but Murray was pretty insistent we both be there.”
“Is it Upside Down related?” El asked, cocking her head to the side.
Joyce sighed and then looked over at Hopper.
“We don’t know yet,” Hopper explained calmly. “We know that the Russians tried to open a gate before and if they’ve got someone like Henry Creel, they might try to insert them into the Upside Down to get control of it for their own ends.”
El nodded. “I’ve been keeping an ear out for any stirrings, but there haven’t been so far.”
He kissed her forehead. “That’s good to know.”
“How long will you be gone?” Will asked nervously. He remembered the last time his mom left and really didn’t want to repeat that experience.
Joyce looked up at Hopper and then back at him. “I don’t know love. I know things went bad last time, but that was because a general went crazy and tried to kill El. That won’t happen this time, I promise.”
“No offense, ma’am,” Lucas huffed. “But I really don’t think that’s a promise you can make. I get that it might be Upside Down related, but I don’t know about anyone else, I’m getting tired of grown ups leaving us behind to take on problems well beyond our capacity.”
“You watch your tone, young man,” Joyce said sternly. “It’s not your place to tell adults what they can or cannot do.”
“Then it’s a good thing I’ve still got PTO coming to me then, isn’t it?” Wayne growled from behind them.
“Wayne!” Lucas breathed in relief.
“Went out bought somethings for youngsters,” he said holding up his loot. “You two can go do what you want. I’ll handle this.”
Joyce chewed on her lip and then set Little Jonathan down gently. “I’m going away for a couple of days, but Mr. Munson is going to watch you and your new friends. You’ll be safe, I promise.”
Lucas rolled his eyes but kept his mouth shut.
“I’ll take care of it,” Wayne repeated more sternly.
Joyce pressed her lips tightly and then nodded. She pulled money out her purse and handed it to Wayne. “To help cover any food they might need.”
Wayne set down some of the bags he had and took the money. “Thank you.”
“We’ll be in contact,” Hopper said squeezing his shoulder. “Keep the walkie nearby.”
They all nodded.
“Who wants to help me make dinner?” Wayne said with a grin, turning back to the other kids.
A cheer went up.

i need a list of your shortest facts to read off to friends in udder dead pan. most of the recent facts are too long to read off.
My shortest few factoids-
I've never written any short factoids.
I never tried to do one.
Short facts are hard.
Billionaire Howard Hughes once attempted to make a film of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and the production would become one of Hollywood’s greatest disasters, taking the lives of over 90 actors and crew, costing nearly half a billion dollars, destroying an entire island, and almost causing a 3rd world war. A party was held to mark the start of production at one of Hughes’ seaside homes and was sadly marred when a drunken Hughes began shooting into the air with his crossbow and killed an albatross, which fell into the punch bowl, offending several actors, who departed the production. This caused a massive production delay during which Hughes bought up over 50 warehouses (including the world’s largest building at the time) to hold the sets and specially built water tanks until casting was replenished. Two of these warehouses burned down (including the world’s largest building fire at the time), destroying the sets which then had to be rebuilt. By the time Hughes decided to cast unknown actors in the lead roles, ten more major set pieces had rotted away delaying the production further. Finally in October of 1948 the new sets and all actors were in place on the luxurious island of Bikini Atoll. The crew was to arrive at the shooting location on October 26th but was delayed by weather. This turned out to be a good thing as the United States conducted an unannounced nuclear test on October 27th, annihilating the island and the sets completely. The island is still toxic, and Howard Hughes, who owned the island, was compensated only $212 for his losses by the government. Undeterred, Hughes began again with fresh sets, and new actors as the previous group had long since departed by 1950. This time, production finally began and footage was shot. It was never developed however because despite the expenditure of $800,000 on pyrotechnics for the first scenes shot, nobody had thought to temperature-protect the film canisters, which were opened at the lab and found to have melted completely into what amounted to large plastic pucks. Hughes filmed the scene again, at the same cost, and then a third time when he was not satisfied with a background extra’s hair. This new footage too was lost when it was captured by rebellious 1950s teenagers who held it for ransom. They asked only $50 but Hughes refused to pay on principle. The actors and crew were even more upset than Hughes that their work had been for nothing and so began the “Leagues Riots” of 1951. What sets remained were once more burned down, this time in protest. Then the real problems began. By then, the Disney production was under way and Hughes spent millions more to spy on and sabotage the rival production. Several Disney employees fell victims to car bombs, others to arsenic poisoning, and one to auto-erotic asphyxiation, but Hughes was not considered responsible for that particular event. Walt Disney, of course, declared war. The “War Between The Sets” began in 1953 as Hughes forces were driven off by Disney’s hired guns, the Mouseketeers which in those days were a fully armed paramilitary force. This skirmish took seven lives, but it was only the beginning. Hughes used his government contracts to secure two bombers and arms weighing in excess of 500 tons, all of which were dropped on Disney owned installations. Disney’s retaliation was severe. Hughes hotels burned days after, there were so many fires that Vegas and LA were both lit as bright as daylight even at midnight from the blazes. Hughes responded with bombings and drone strikes, with “drone strikes” in 1953 referring to dropping bees on ones enemy. The conflict at one point threatened to spill over into Russia’s Southern American interests, leading the president to demand Hughes back down before turning the cold war into a nuclear conflict. By the time a truce was called, Disney’s film was in theaters and Hughes was ready to call it a loss.
Mice can't fart.

I am genuinely so impressed that I managed to make it through this week. I started Monday with such low mood and such low energy that all the tasks I had to get through seemed utterly insurmountable... and yet here I am, with an incredibly productive week behind me.
First of all, I am happy to say that my protein extraction experiment has been incredibly successful. 4 out of 6 proteins worked, and one of them even worked so well that this test culture will give me enough for me to use in the future without the need to do a full-size culture. What's more, is that I think the 2 that didn't work are due to a folding problem, leading them to be degraded before they're even properly expressed. I will discuss this with my supervisor, but this would mean that the issue was definitely not technical, which is super validating for me. It just feels so good to be getting those results, and I'm so excited that I'm still sat in the lab, concentrating the proteins while my work Christmas party is in full swing downstairs. I feel so happy and at peace. I'm looking forward to going home and relaxing this weekend. On another exciting note, I have almost finished the first full draft of my upgrade report! Since I still have to wait for a few pieces of data before I can fully type it up, I've started editing the parts that I've already got. Surprisingly, I'm quite happy with a lot of the stuff that I've written, and it's nice to see that I'm making some progress.
Next week is my last week of work before I go on holiday, and I'll only be in for 3 days!! It feels incredible to say that I'm finally able to get some time off, and I'm really looking forward to going away and just emptying my mind. I hope I can come into the new year relaxed, refreshed, and ready to get some work done!!!
I hope everyone has a happy Friday! Well done to everyone who has finished exams and for those that are still going GOOD LUCK!! You're almost there guys!! ___

Hey i've been thinking about your AU where Chuuya joins the ADA and his ability reverts go being an ability amplifier.
What happens when he and dazai touch then? The simple answer would be No Longer Human trumps chuuyas ability, and it just gets nullified. But i think there is a high chance they interact and create a singularity! It fits them so well for their abbilities to go so strongly against each other they end up joining up and creating something even greater
Ever since I brought up the concept [x] [x], many have wanted to talk about this issue [1] [2] [3] I am on my knees begging everyone to explore this concept too I can't be the only one playing in this space you all have ideas worth exploring PLEASE
I've been very against skk making a singularity in the past but I've mellowed out in the (checks notes) last year and now I'm more interested in how a singularity could happen between those two abilities, if Dazai nullifies everything without exception. Dead Apple already played with Dazai's ability interacting in strange ways with others, when Shibusawa was able to separate and crystallize it like the rest, and also how it created a singularity with the ability to attract abilities and the ability to fuse abilities. So maybe skk can't create one together on their own, but through a third party they're both interacting with? potential potential
That's actually an alternative I considered! If Fukuzawa's ability gave Chuuya complete control over his ability, but Chuuya only ever knew his ability as what the lab turned it into, maybe Chuuya would subconsciously still try to make it do its thing? But for some reason it's harder now, and he has to concentrate on it a lot more, and it doesn't seem as powerful by default? It would be a frustrating mess ("this ability sucks! why is having more control making it more difficult?!"), and could still lead to Chuuya accidentally enhancing someone's ability.
In that version, Chuuya would still have his gravity control on top of his enhancing, because he's actually consciously creating a singularity on demand, instead of always using one. Not sure what that could mean about Arahabaki/Corruption, but I think the idea of skk, without explaining anything, leaving the ADA together to go test out those new limitations, and then coming back to their coworkers scratching their heads about the forest that became a warzone just outside the city is really funny.
#if chuuya joins the good guys i nerf him in some way#he's too op he's like the rpg enemy you fight before they join you and all their stats get balanced to your side#ada!chuuya#ada!skk#<- tags we haven't seen in a year on this blog!!#ask answered#not art

hey here's another question that I've been thinking about for about a week with no particular breakthrough. I'm so much on the healthcare side that all my advice is on that side. Dude, I read academic articles for this and didn't come up with anything particularly useful. That's why I'm answering this publicly, so other people hopefully add something useful. (Also I know you said you're not looking for opioids. I'm gonna talk about opioids anyway they certainly affect perceptions of chronic pain. In your case, try making clear early on that you don't want opioids.)
I'll say some things that I've noticed from my work to maybe provide some insight into healthcare's side of the exchange. I'm not saying this is the way things should be, I'm giving advice based on how I see things are. I wish I could say this wasn't the case, but when there's a pain medication standoff, the two ways I've seen it work out best for a patient are:
A third party advocates for the patient. (like family, nurse, social worker, different specialist, patient advocate, etc)
Change in caregiver.
I don't like those as the top answers, but that's what I've seen and it's consistent with a lot of the accounts I encountered. There is also a third way that the pain medication standoff can quickly end in a patient's favor:
3. New evidence (new symptom, imaging, vital signs, lab test, etc) forces a reexamination of how we're thinking about the patient.
This is also the "oh shit they seem worse" method, but it can also be "we have gained new information that re-contextualizes the information we already knew." This is like hey the xray came back, your whole bone is dust, or hey your blood pressure is now significantly higher, or hey oops your appendix exploded.
In all three cases, something new happens to change the dynamic. This works for healthcare providers operating in good faith because someone comes in fresh and/or the new dynamic causes the healthcare team to do a new assessment and cost/benefit analysis with this updated information. This works for healthcare providers operating in bad faith because they are either removed from the situation or put in a position where giving pain medication is less onerous than not giving pain medication. I genuinely, genuinely believe far more healthcare employees are operating in good faith rather than bad faith, although the end results can look the same from the patient side. This means I think that far more people are swayed by additional information that makes pain management have more benefit and less cost.
I don't know how actionable any of this is from the patient side unfortunately. I don't love being like "my advice? wait till shift change, see if you can shake it up." Bring someone to the emergency department with you if you have someone available, preferably someone prepared to make a fuss on your behalf. If you don't have a third person, see if you can get one. Hospitals can have patient advocate as a job. If they aren't available, is there someone on your healthcare team that seems most sympathetic? Try asking them if they have any advice. They might be able to give you some, they might advocate for you. Be careful about badmouthing staff to other staff and avoid compliments to one member of the team that relies on insulting another member. You don't know the relationships at play, and it's sort of like how you shouldn't trash talk your old job when interviewing for a new job. You may be completely right in everything you're saying, but being like "my boss was a crazy asshole who refused to recognize my work," doesn't come off as objective. It can undercut your credibility and introduce hostility into the conversation where it is not productive.
I'd also be prepared to talk about what you already tried to relieve the pain. Again, with you I'd mention upfront that you don't want opioids because they don't work for you. Then say what you have already tried at home before you came in (tylenol, ibpurofen, heating, ice, exercises, stretching, shower, other meds, etc) and the effect of both the pain (can't sleep, makes you nauseated, had to call off sick from work, aren't able to be a caregiver to someone, etc) and your already attempted interventions (no significant pain control, symptoms got worse, called PCP, they said emergency was the next step, etc). If your condition is chronic, compare it on the pain scale and the functionality scale to your baseline. (i.e. "I'm always at least a 3 out of ten on the pain scale, but it doesn't usually leave me bedbound." "Normally Symptom improves after Intervention At Home, but that didn't work this time.") Something that can make providers hesitant is if opioids, benzos, or other powerful drugs are the first and only thing a patient says will help and they're unwilling to try anything else, so sometimes demonstrating flexibility with your pain plan can signal "I'm not here for oxy to sell, I'm here because I want my symptoms to stop (and, if relevant, figure out what is causing them)."
Also if you can and feel safe doing so, consider providing feedback to the hospital. Nothing changes without something documented.
#nursing tag#please ppl on more pt and ed side feel free to weigh in#sorry if any of this seems condescending or super obvious like 'yeah obviously i do that already'#me: don't know what to say :/#also me: six billion word reply

Can I have some aaron minyard hcs 🥹?
gladly! i'll talk about him any day
post-trial, it's easier to tell him and andrew apart because aaron grows his hair out a bit more, mostly because he hates getting it cut until he learns to do it himself. nicky thinks its great and keeps messing with it until aaron threatens to shave it into a mullet and nicky almost has a heart attack
a few of his non-fox friends are in a band together and one of their shows is the first official date he takes katelyn at the start of their third year
he gestures a lot whilst talking, and wont stop or break his flow if you hand him something so katelyn and some of their other friends started experimenting with how many various objects they could get him to gesture with before he noticed
he doesn't know how to drive and doesn't want to learn (#publictransitking) but katelyn does and he's happy to be a passenger princess
cd collector, thinks vinyl is dumb, has had multiple long conversations about this with matt
the t-shirts he owns consist of three varieties: band shirts, shirts with stupid science references or jokes on them, or plain colors. he's also never wearing just a tshirt and jeans, the dude layers to hell and back he's usually wearing a minimum of 3 layers in the winter, often a tshirt plus a hoodie or flannel plus a jacket
wears katelyn's vixens jacket more than he wears his own foxes jacket, usually because she has it and he lost track of it two months ago
in third year, after the deal is broken, the trial is over, and aaron gets to come out of his shell more, he is first interrogated by the vixens, but after he passes their test, he hangs out with them a lot and becomes the group's token singular guy friend. steps into the role with ENTHUSIASM. is dubbed sk8er boi on the group chat. he rides to away games on their bus with them and the whole squad basically adopts him. like a puppy
after 5 years at palmetto, 5 years of various shenanigans, parties and all kinds of other shit, aaron starts med school having kissed 3 men total. it is your guess as to who they are.
insomniac, absolutely not a pyjama guy, he just falls asleep in whatever he's wearing and gets berated by nicky for sleeping in jeans
drinks coffee black or not at all
CAN play guitar. has stepped in for that band i mentioned earlier exactly once and hasn't performed since. he did enjoy it though and he is decently proficient at guitar. he picked it up in high school because he was able to take lessons an hour before school started, which ended up a perfect excuse to leave the house before tilda was awake, and then not get back until after exy practice. he drops it for a while between high school and palmetto, he doesn't play during the main trilogy taking place, but andrew gets him his first guitar after the trial is over
goes to stay with katelyn's family for the summer before he has to be back in SC for the trial but they leave early because her parents and a couple older relatives don't approve. he calls matt, who agrees to pick him up and take him to stay with randy in NY until the trial. katelyn tries to come with him but he tells her to stay with her family. she meets him in SC when he comes back
oh my god the dude had such an emo phase. he never dyed his hair but he definitely spent like a year wearing all black when he was 14 and the release of three cheers for sweet revenge in 2004? absolutely life changing. the black parade came out right before halloween in TRK, that album was doing SO MUCH for him
dog person (has a lab puppy named lily that katelyn got him when they got into medical school)
later on he's absolutely Terrified of being a father (even though he's good at it). after they find out they're having twin girls, katelyn has to stay overnight in the hospital, so the nurses tell him to go home and rest but he's too freaked to sleep. he calls wymack instead and wymack picks him up and on the drive back to he and abby's house, aaron talks about all of it– his mom, his fear of being like her, and he's terrified of the twins ending up like him and andrew, terrified that shitty siblings runs in the family. he spends the night with wymack and abby, who take care of him, promise to help out and babysit when aaron and katelyn need, and wymack basically says "look man if i can deal with the foxes for five years, you can take care of your girls". they're born a couple months later, wymack and abby keep their promise, and aaron is exactly as good a dad as they said he would be
#got a little soft toward the end i cant help it I love him so bad#orpheus speaks#aaron minyard#i've latched onto him and i am not letting go#aftg#all for the game#headcanons

I have finished that book. My thoughts are under the cut
This book was genetically engineered in a lab based in market research that highlighted the hottest trends in booktok. It is a Frankenstein-esque splicing of Harry Potter, the Hunger Games, Divergent, Eragon, and ACOTAR.
I don't understand why horny dragons make the riders horny.
Much of the world building had me scratching my head. I didn't understand why they were willing to lose so many 18-21 year olds every single year in their training when they're suffering many casualties in the war efforts. It makes no sense. At one point, when the party is held for the king, the infantry numbers outweigh the riders significantly - so why are they seemingly not defending outposts too?
I couldn't understand the differences between the school years. The second and third years all take part in the same trials as the first years together; they should surely be more experienced and have a breadth of knowledge to call upon but they don't. There is little difference between the years.
There were many names mentioned. In Harry Potter, this adds to the richness of the world building because they're not just names thrown in; we actually see them interacting with the MC and they have a backstory and personality - we also see them pop up many times. In FW, the names are pretty much interchangeable. It could be said by a third year or a second year or someone from this class or that one; there's no distinguishing these random characters who make one or two appearances.
Violet falls into the Mary Sue category as deeply as the plot relies on tried-and-tested tropes. From the first page, I could have predicted she would have a special dragon, and special powers, that the bad boy is not really a bad boy.
There was so much telling and not showing. Xaden is so ruthless. Xaden cares for nobody. Then his behaviour is him not punishing Violet for sneaking out, giving her advice, teaching her.
Whilst the cringey modern language put me off (toxic man, how hot everybody is, for the win etc) and Tairn devolves from a grumpy ancient being to a millennial, what I will say is that it was easy to read despite its predictability. I actually preferred the writing to this than in When The Moon Hatched and Once Upon a Broken Heart.
If I was 15/16 I'd have probably been crazy about this book - I was a Twihard.
I liked Liam a lot :(

Report: Voting Machines Were Altered Before the 2024 Election. Did Kamala Harris Actually Win?
The Quiet Move In 2024, a federally accredited lab named Pro V&V conducted a wave of hardware and software changes to ES&S voting machines. These were major changes—new ballot scanners, printer adjustments, updated firmware, and a new Electionware reporting system. But they were passed off as “de minimis” tweaks, a label meant for minor changes that don’t require full public review or testing.
However, as noted by Dissent in Bloom substack, the changes were anything but minor.
SMART Elections immediately flagged the move. But by then, it was too late. The machines had already been used in the election. And Pro V&V? The lab responsible for certifying them? It all but disappeared. Their once-public website became a hollow page. No logs. No documentation. Just a phone number and a generic email address.
This is the lab that signs off on voting systems in Pennsylvania, Florida, New Jersey, California—and countless other places. And when people started asking questions, they vanished.
Something Was Off With the Votes In Rockland County, New York, voters noticed their ballots didn’t seem to count. People swore under oath that they voted for Senate candidate Diane Sare. But in district after district, the machines didn’t reflect it. In one case, nine voters said they picked her. Only five votes showed up. In another, five claimed to vote for her—only three were recorded.
It wasn’t just third-party candidates. Kamala Harris’s name was missing entirely from the top of the ballot in several heavily Democratic districts. In areas that overwhelmingly backed Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand for Senate, somehow, Harris got zero votes. Zero.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump received 750,000 more votes than Republican Senate candidates in those same districts. That’s not just voter preference. That’s a statistical impossibility.
As Dissent in Bloom reported: “That’s not split-ticket voting. That’s a mathematical anomaly.”

For years, the idea of food independence has conjured images of sprawling gardens, backyard chickens, and rows of home-canned goods. But let’s be real: not everyone has an acre of land—or even a backyard. Does that mean food independence is out of reach? Not by a long shot. In 2025, it’s time to rethink what food self-reliance looks like. Whether you’re in an apartment, a condo, or just don’t have the time or space for traditional homesteading, you can still build a pantry that’s resilient against supply chain hiccups, inflation, and shortages. Step 1: Maximize Shelf-Stable Staples You don’t need a garden to stock up on dry goods. Focus on building a pantry of essentials with long shelf lives. Stock Up On: - Rice, beans, and lentils - Oats, pasta, and flour - Shelf-stable milk and powdered eggs - Salt, sugar, and cooking oils Step 2: Canned Goods Are Your Friend Canning isn’t just for homesteaders. Commercially canned goods offer a long shelf life, convenience, and variety. Buy Smart: - Focus on vegetables, proteins (tuna, chicken), soups, and fruits - Check for sales and bulk-buy deals - Rotate stock and use older cans first Pro Tip: Don’t forget about canned butter, ghee, and shelf-stable cheese options. FIFO Countertop Mini Can Tracker Holds 30 Standard 10-24 Oz Can Sizes, White| Stackable & Adjustable Can Organizer for Pantry, USA Made, White - Mini Can Tracker: Keeps your kitchen organized by storing and rotating your canned goods on a First In First Out model saving you from expired food cost and waste - Can Organizer Easy Install: Ensures effortless installation saving you time and energy; Carefully sized dowels fit smoothly into the panels, giving your fridge or pantry a fresh new look; Made in the USA - Customizable Can Rack: Includes the following easy-fit dowels; 3 - A dowels (fits family soup cans), 6 - B dowels (fits chunky soup and fruit cans), 6 - C dowels (fits standard vegetable/soup cans) - Canned Food Organizer Capacity: Make room for up to 30 cans, preserving sodas, soups, and veggies in great harmony; Measures 16 inches long, 16 inches wide, 12 inches tall, and weighs 5 pounds - Expandable Food Storage: Expand your organized empire in your refrigerator, pantry, cupboards, and cabinets by adding panels, dowels, or even units for limitless growth $44.19 Buy on Amazon Step 3: Think Vertical—Indoor Gardening No backyard? No problem. Grow small-scale crops indoors with minimal space. Try These: - Herbs (basil, parsley, cilantro) on windowsills - Microgreens using shallow trays - Hydroponic kits for lettuce and greens Step 4: Store Water, Not Just Food Water is just as critical as food, and most urban preppers underestimate how much they’ll need. Store: - At least one gallon per person per day (for drinking and minimal hygiene) - Water filters and purification tablets as backup - Collapsible storage containers to maximize space Big Berkey Gravity-Fed Stainless Steel Countertop Water Filter System 2.25 Gallon with 2 Authentic Black Berkey Elements BB9-2 Filters - ENJOY GREAT-TASTING TAP WATER EVERY DAY AT HOME- The 2.25-gallon Big Berkey System can be used on a countertop in your kitchen or office to transform tap water into delicious drinking water that's also ideal for making your favorite beverages or cooking. - INDEPENDENT TESTING- Black Berkey Elements (the original BB9-2) are composed of a unique, proprietary blend of multiple media types backed by testing from accredited, third-party labs. Black Berkey Elements remove or dramatically reduce over 250+ typical contaminants that could be present in freshwater sources—no electricity, tools, or plumbing are required. - INCLUDES AUTHENTIC BLACK BERKEY ELEMENTS (THE ORIGINAL BB9-2)- Don't fall for lookalike filters that use our Berkey BB9-2 model number or trademarks in their titles or product descriptions to legitimize their brand as replacements or "compatible", when they are not. Black Berkey Elements are designed to work synergistically and target specific contaminants that far exceed the reduction capabilities of black filters solely composed of activated carbon. - ECONOMICAL, LONG-LASTING- Black Berkey Elements provide filtered water for just pennies per gallon. Each pair of Black Berkey Elements lasts for up to 6,000 gallons before replacement is recommended. Elements may require replacement sooner based upon the quality of influent water. Each additional pair of Black Berkey Elements (sold separately) adds an additional 6,000 gallons of contaminant reduction. - THE GOLD STANDARD IN GRAVITY-FED WATER FILTRATION- Authentic Black Berkey Elements are capable of greater contaminant reduction and a longer lifespan than virtually any of the other filter elements on the market. Berkey systems are simple and easy to use and require no electricity, costly installation, or tools, providing economical, long-lasting water filtration for just pennies a gallon. $367.00 Buy on Amazon Step 5: Get Creative with Storage When space is tight, you have to think vertically and creatively. Ideas: - Under-bed bins for bulk goods - Overhead shelving in closets or garages - Stackable containers that maximize footprint Step 6: Plan for Rotation and Replenishment A pantry is only as good as its maintenance. Maintain It: - Label items with purchase and expiration dates - Create a simple inventory spreadsheet - Set reminders to rotate stock every few months Final Thoughts: You Don’t Need Land to Be Ready Food independence isn’t just for the rural prepper. It’s about mindset, strategy, and a commitment to self-reliance—no matter where you live. By focusing on shelf-stable essentials, clever storage, and a few innovative growing techniques, you can build a pantry that stands strong against whatever comes next. Related Reads: - The Sensible Prepper – Practical Advice for Tough Times - Survival Gear List – The Essentials You Shouldn’t Leave Without Finally, remember that food independence is an ongoing journey. Stay informed about food preservation techniques, explore new recipes using your stored items, and continuously adapt your strategies as your needs evolve. This proactive approach will help ensure that you remain prepared for any eventuality, no matter where you live. Moreover, engage with your community to share ideas, resources, and even trade goods. Building relationships with local farmers or joining community-supported agriculture (CSA) programs can enhance your food independence and introduce you to fresh, local options that may not be available in stores. Regular maintenance of your pantry is essential for ensuring that your food supply remains fresh and ready for use. Consider setting up a reminder system on your smartphone or calendar to help you keep track of your inventory and remind you when it's time to check on your supplies. When considering creative storage solutions, think beyond the conventional. Utilize space in your home creatively by incorporating multi-functional furniture that doubles as storage, such as ottomans or coffee tables with hidden compartments. Every bit of space counts when preparing for potential shortages or emergencies. Another critical aspect of water storage is the need for emergency preparedness. Storing water isn’t just about filling up containers; it’s also about ensuring you have access to clean, drinkable water during emergencies. Invest in high-quality water filtration systems and purification tablets to ensure your stored water remains safe for consumption over time. As you think vertically for indoor gardening, consider the benefits of LED grow lights. These lights can mimic sunlight, enabling you to grow plants indoors even when natural light is scarce. This technology allows for greater control over your indoor gardening environment and can significantly expand your growing options. In addition to canned goods, consider freeze-dried options. These products not only have an impressive shelf life but also retain more nutrients and flavor compared to traditional canned foods. They can be rehydrated and used in many recipes, making them a versatile addition to your pantry. When thinking about shelf-stable staples, it's beneficial to explore legumes beyond just basic beans and lentils. Incorporate a variety of dried beans—such as black beans, kidney beans, and chickpeas—not only for their nutritional value but also for their versatility in a variety of dishes. Each type of legume can bring unique flavors and textures to your meals, enhancing your culinary repertoire. Consider urban gardening techniques that allow you to grow food in small spaces, such as vertical gardening or hydroponic systems. These innovations can transform a small apartment balcony into a lush, productive garden, yielding fresh vegetables and herbs all year round. In today's fast-paced world, the notion of achieving food independence takes on new dimensions. It's not just about self-sustaining your food source; it's about creating resilience in the face of global uncertainties. With the increasing volatility of food prices and supply chains, understanding how to prepare for the worst while still enjoying the best of what our urban environments have to offer is crucial. Greg calling you while at work - fluff
Greg Sanders x fem!reader
Inspired by the scene in season 1 episode 17 “Face Lift.” He’s so cute on the phone.
The Greg vibe:
No warnings other than mention of sex. just fluff. Gifs are not mine
Summary: While at work Greg calls you to confirm your date for tomorrow.
—————————
You met Greg at a mutual friend’s house party a few months back. You were looking through your friend’s record collection when he first approached you. Greg said that he’d been trying to find the chance to talk to you all night; you caught his attention and he was insistently smitten. He was charming and made you laugh; not wasting a second before asking you out. You were equally infatuated with him, but you wouldn’t admit to it if he asked.
The two of you had been on a handful of dates since, having slept together for the first time last week. You’d been burned in the past and worried you’d stop hearing from him but here he was calling you the third time this week. You were surprised the first time because you remember him telling you that he worked nights.
“Don’t you get any work done?” You playfully greet him after answering the phone.
“I appreciate the concern, but yes I do” he defends, “the computer just takes a while to analyze the tests.”
“Oh is that what it is?” You tease. Yesterday he called you on his lunch break claiming that he had a free moment and wanted to hear your voice.
“Actually, I’ve been backlogged all day and just finished catching up” he smiles while moving to take off his gloves.
“So this call is your reward for a job well done?” you ask raising your eyebrows.
“You could say something like that” he jests then pauses, “have you made up your mind about our date tomorrow?”
Greg could sense your hesitation and hoped you’d say yes. The night you all slept together was the last time he saw you. He only managed to get tomorrow off after some serious pleading with Grissom. He had eagerly agreed to work a double shift next week; he didn’t care, he needed to see you. Images of you were swirling around in his head, and he wasn’t able to focus on anything else but you. Greg also couldn’t shake the worry that you were pulling away from him. He wanted this date to ease your mind as he plans to ask you to be his girlfriend.
“Yes, let’s do it” you happily confirm while smiling into the phone. Greg stops in his tracks. He’s as elated as he was the first you agreed to go out with him.
“Awesome baby, I can’t wait” he tries to stay calm but knows you won’t fall for it. You can picture him strutting around the lab.
“What time are you picking me up?” you ask
“6, how does that sound?” he replies
“That’s perfect. Does this mean you are finally going to tell me what we’re doing or is it still a mystery?” You question hoping to get something out of him. He had refused to tell you anything, only that it was going to be special.
“Mmm, I think I’m going to keep you on edge just a little longer” he teases knowing that you’ll make him pay for those words later which is exactly what he wants.
“I need to know what to wear Greg” you whine.
“Oh, well then I can definitely help you with that” he smirks while sitting down and propping his feet up. “Might I suggest the impossible red dress that you have tucked away in your closet?”
“How do you know about that?” you ask surprised that he remembers.
“That one’s hard to forget because I’ve been imagining you in it ever since. Come on baby, trust me. I know you’ll look stunning, you always do” he charms while leaning back in his chair.
“Alright, I might be able to make that happen but only if you promise to take it off afterwards” you smirk.
“I promise, you’re such a tease” he blushes before you hear another voice come through the phone.
Greg turns around to see that Nick has walked into the lab, clearly looking for his test results. He brushes him off as he’s too excited about your all’s date tomorrow night.
“You gotta go?” you ask in disappointment
“Mhm, I’ll see you tomorrow, I can’t wait” he smiles.
“Me neither. I’ll see you then” you reply
“Bye baby” he says before reluctantly hanging up the phone and standing up to go talk to Nick.

Four days, 10 witnesses, and dozens of exhibits in the US Coast Guard’s Marine Board of Investigation hearing on the Titan submersible implosion have made public a flood of information about the doomed vessel’s design and operation. But one thing the hearings have not yet explained is why the submersible suddenly failed on a sightseeing trip to the Titanic in June 2023, nor who might shoulder the blame for the deaths of its five crew.
Here’s what we know going into the second and final week of hearings, and some key unanswered questions.
The Two Sides of Stockton Rush
OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, who died piloting the Titan, took the bulk of the blame during the hearing’s first two days. Tony Nissen, former director of engineering, characterized Rush as someone who made critical decisions based on speed and cost, changing his mind on a daily basis. Nissen said that Rush eventually fired him over his insistence on scrapping the Titan’s first carbon fiber hull on safety grounds.
David Lochridge, a former director of marine operations for OceanGate, then testified that Rush had once made piloting errors on the company’s first submersible during a dive to the wreck of the Andrea Doria, panicked, and threw its controller at Lochridge’s head. “He would blame everything on everyone else,” said Lochridge. “It was bullying.”
Lochridge said that several critical components had even been assembled using parts from a home improvement store at Rush’s direction. When Lochridge made a whistleblower complaint to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration after being fired for raising multiple safety concerns, Rush retaliated by suing him and his wife for breach of contract and fraud.
Rush did have his defenders. Renata Rojas, who traveled on several OceanGate expeditions, called Rush “very fair” and flatly denied Lochridge’s account of the Andrea Doria confrontation. Fred Hagen, another paying passenger, lauded Rush as a brilliant man who made a conscious effort to maintain a culture of safety in a high-risk environment.
“It wasn’t supposed to be safe,” he told the panel. “It was supposed to be a thrilling adventure.”
Titan’s Unusual Design and Development
Nissen made a credible defense of his initial design for the Titan, but several witnesses testified that it skirted, or simply ignored, accepted construction practices for submersibles. OceanGate tested only one scale model of the innovative carbon fiber hull and, despite it failing early under high pressures, proceeded straight to building a full-scale hull. Dave Dyer, an engineer at the University of Washington, testified that his lab stopped providing engineering support to OceanGate in 2016 after disagreements that included the company’s insistence on using glass control spheres that Dyer feared could explode at depth “as though a bomb had gone off.” Those spheres housed control electronics for the Titan’s thrusters.
Instead of scanning the first hull to look for defects or specifying a finite lifetime of dives, OceanGate relied on an unproven acoustic monitoring system to provide an early warning of failure. Lochridge called the Titan “an abomination” and its carbon fiber hull “disgusting.” Both he and Nissen said that they would not have dived in it.
After they left, the Titan was rebuilt with a new hull that was never tested to industry norms nor certified by an independent third-party agency. Patrick Lahey, CEO of submersible maker Triton Submarines, said that certifying a novel hull was not only possible but essential for safety.
“We were developing and certifying the deepest diving sub in the world at the same time they were developing this amateurish contraption,” he testified. “There was absolutely no reason they couldn’t have got it certified.”
A History of Troubled Titanic Missions
OceanGate’s first missions to the Titanic in 2021 were beset with problems, including the Titan’s forward titanium dome falling off after a dive, worrying readings on the acoustic monitoring system, and a thruster failing at 3,500 meters’ depth. One Coast Guard evidence slide showed 70 equipment issues requiring correction from the season’s dives. Things improved slightly the following year, with only 48 recorded issues. But these included dead batteries extending a mission from around seven to 27 hours, and the sub itself being damaged on recovery.
One dive in 2022 ended with a mysterious loud bang and cracking noise upon surfacing. Antonella Wilby, an OceanGate engineering contractor, was so worried about this bang she considered alerting OceanGate’s board of directors. She testified that another employee warned her that she risked being sued if she did so. “Anyone should feel free to speak up about safety without fear of retribution, and that is not at all what I saw,” she said. “I was entirely dismissed.”
On the Titan’s penultimate dive in 2023, contractor Tym Catterson admitted to failing to carry out a safety check; the Titan was left listing at a 45-degree angle for an hour, piling up those on board.
Conflicting Views on the Carbon Fiber Hull
There was conflicting testimony on the safety of the Titan’s unique carbon fiber hull. Dyer pointed out that carbon fiber could be a good fit for deep submersibles, and Nissen was adamant that computer modeling and the acoustic monitoring warning system meant that it could be used indefinitely. Lochridge, Catterson, and former HR director Bonnie Carl were all far more skeptical about the hull’s design and implementation. But all three acknowledged that they were not engineers.
Next week’s appearances by Nissen’s successor, Phil Brooks, more submersible engineers, and a carbon fiber expert from Boeing should address many of these questions. In particular, testimony next Wednesday from an engineer at the National Transportation Safety Board’s Materials Laboratory about the Titan’s wreckage may identify the physical cause of the implosion.
Where Was the Coast Guard?
At several points, investigators pointed out that the Titan should have been inspected by the US Coast Guard before carrying paying passengers. None of those questioned could say why it was not, despite OceanGate apparently contacting the Coast Guard on multiple occasions to provide notice of its underwater operations.
Lochridge also testified that OSHA had told him in 2018 that it had communicated his safety complaints to the Coast Guard. At least one of the five US Coast Guard witnesses being called next week is based in the Puget Sound, near OceanGate’s headquarters, and may be able to speak to this.
US Coast Guard Rear Admiral John Lockwood, who joined OceanGate’s board in 2013, is not on the witness list. Lochridge and Carl testified that Lockwood’s role was to provide oversight and smooth interactions with the Coast Guard.
Missing Witnesses
Nor is Lockwood the only notable absentee from the witness box. Multiple witnesses this week testified to the key roles of OceanGate employees, including Wendy Rush, Scott Griffith, and Neil McCurdy, in making crucial business, regulatory, and operational decisions throughout OceanGate’s history and on the day of the accident. None are being called to testify. Nor have any of the hulls’ manufacturers been called. The Coast Guard has not provided a reason for this other than to deny that it is because those witnesses would have asserted their Fifth Amendment rights to refuse to answer questions.

Private equity firms are utilizing public trust in long-standing publications to sell every product under the sun
In a bid to replace falling ad revenue, publishing houses are selling their publications for parts to media groups that are quick to establish affiliate marketing deals.
Savvy SEOs at big media publishers (or third-party vendors hired by them) realized that they could create pages for ‘best of’ product recommendations without the need to invest any time or effort in actually testing and reviewing the products first. So, they peppered their pages with references to a ‘rigorous testing process,’ their ‘lab team,’ subject matter experts ‘they collaborated with,’ and complicated methodologies that seem impressive at a cursory look. Sometimes, they even added photos of ‘tests’ with products covered in Post-it notes, someone holding a tape measure, and people with very ‘scientific’ clipboards. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to show you’re doing the thing you’re supposed to be doing, but what happens when that’s as far as you go?
