I went back and forth on whether to post this or not because I normally don't like callouts, but ultimately, I've decided this one is fair. This is a serious issue for low vision people like me, who have a hard enough time finding places and communities where we are accepted. This is a common issue. I run into this OFTEN. I will no longer be silent about it.

Ultimately: If you don't want me to talk about you being ableist, don't be ableist! It's very simple. I wouldn't have posted this at all if the people involved had met me with any semblance of respect, curiosity, or care, but they decided to double down on their hypocrisy instead.

Recently, I joined (and then immediately left) The Daemonism Forum's Discord server because I was invited to check it out by a friendly acquaintence and I was curious to see what it was all about. Like most servers, it's not very accessible to screenreader users, but there wasn't any place for me to make a comment on this. I couldn't open a ticket and there was no channel for server feedback, so I mostly just kept to myself and put it at the bottom of my folders, muted.

There was no suggestion for image descriptions or alt text. There was no rule banning unicode. There was nothing showing that the space was friendly for screenreader users.

The single time I tried to speak there (beyond the first day when I was giving hellos and thank yous back to the welcomers), which was yesterday, it blew up in my face.

First, I was asked to add my system tag into my username. Cool, no big deal, I'd just forgotten!

Then, when I added it, Fern (the mod) said this:

with "thank you for that !! we do ask that you don't use emojis only for your system tag, however, for ease of screenreaders and communication purporses! if you could please put a tag that's got a word in it also"

me replying to that with, "as a screenreader user myself (low vision), your server name is unreadable due to the unicode. emojis read fine on all three of my screenreaders. i'd be willing to add a word if it were actually to benefit screenreaders (and i will, since i am aware all are built differently), but it definitely looks quite a bit hypocritical to me that unicode symbols are perfectly allowed but my own tag is an issue. /not mad"]

Fern's display name has two unicode characters in it.

Now, I've been blind for a long time and low vision for a much longer time after that, so I'm pretty familiar with screenreaders considering I often use one! Every single screenreader I have ever used, across every device, cannot read unicode. This is fairly basic knowledge on screenreaders. This is a very quick "search or ask any screenreader user" sort of thing.

Clearly, Fern is unaware of how screenreaders work, yet is enforcing a rule in a large public space claiming it's for "screenreader accessibility" when the entire server is far from accessible whatsoever. I pointed out that there probably are screenreaders out there that struggle with emojis and that I'd add a word, but it felt very hypocritical to police me on assistive technology she clearly knew nothing about and didn't care about.

Other users (who aren't mods and therefore I've censored) chimed in.

Me replying "the issue i'm facing is correcting me claiming it's "for accessibility" while actively being far more inaccessible to far more screenreaders, showing that the person who corrected me very likely isn't educated on blindness, low vision, or how screenreaders actually function. it'd be way less an issue on my end if it were asked just for lookup purposes and not using "screenreader accessibility" as the reason whilst actively breaking my screenreaders."]

Kipling & Arkadius, another mod, replying "We ask for system tags to include text for multiple reasons. Accessibility is one, but also the ability to search (also important for moderation), a more unique and recognizable system tag (as multiple systems may use the same or similar emojis), and the fact that emojis are not universal across devices and may not even show up on some. You can still add emojis to your name but we ask that the system tag is present in text form. As far as I know we have not been made aware previously of screen reader issues with Unicode characters, so that is helpful feedback to have! I also want to say that the mod team has been discussing the current pk display name rules. This is also not the proper channel for extensive discussion of this rule."]

This is where I actively got angry. Kipling clearly doesn't know about screenreaders either, since the mods "have not been made aware previously of screenreader issues with unicode" when that's... VERY common knowledge among literally anyone who cares to look. Why are these mods making rules on assistive technology with zero knowledge of it in a large server? Did they even think to consult a blind person for two seconds?

It then somehow got worse.

Me replying "there's not exactly anywhere for anyone to offer feedback, though. the emojis are not the issue. i do not care about the emojis. the issue is that this server claims to care about accessibility without even knowing how the assistive technology they're making rules about works. you (the staff) are actively being ableist by doing that.

here's my suggestion: you cannot claim to care about "accessibility" when you only care if it doesn't apply to you personally and you don't listen to actually legally blind people on the matter. my other suggestion is that if you (the staff) actually care about screenreader accessibility, then you need to look into what that means instead of throwing it around at everyone with absolutely zero clue of how the assistive technology you claim to care about even works to begin with. whatever, I'm out"]

The fact that the SIGHTED mods of such a large and long-running server are actively watering down and silencing my issues with actual hypocrisy and ableism when I'm the one who actually uses the screenreaders they're making rules about is disgusting.

These mods do not need to be a pillar or an educator of ANY community if they lack the emotional maturity to even read what my actual issue was. This is disgusting, abhorrent, and blatantly ableist behavior, and I know nothing will change unless people talk about it.

This space is NOT safe for screenreader users, low vision users, or blind users. The mods are actively blatantly ableist towards us, just so you're aware before you join or consider joining.

LOS ANGELES (KTLA) – Some of the biggest names in pop, rock and country are coming together to raise funds for victims of the Palisades and Eaton wildfires and assist with the recovery.

A benefit concert, FireAid, will take place on Jan. 30 on two stages, one at Intuit Dome and the other at The Kia Forum, organizers announced on Thursday.

More than 15 music acts have been announced so far, including Billie Eilish and Finneas, Earth, Wind & Fire, Gracie Abrams, Green Day, Gwen Stefani, Jelly Roll, Joni Mitchell, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Lil Baby, P!nk, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rod Stewart, Sting, Stephen Stills, Stevie Nicks, Tate McRae, and performing together for the first time, Dave Matthews and John Mayer.

Additional artists will be announced in the coming days.

This special event is being produced by Shelli, Irving, and the Azoff family in conjunction with Live Nation and AEG Presents. Proceeds will be directed to a new nonprofit that supports displaced families, helps rebuild infrastructure, and improves fire prevention technologies and strategies to ensure Los Angeles is better prepared for wildfires in the future.

A post about dyeing hair with henna and other plants 🌱

My first post in this blog will not be about classical cosmetic chemistry. I mean, what I'm going to talk about is still chemistry: I know people like to brand natural stuff as “chemical-free,” but plant extracts still have (many!) organic compounds in them, and it’s still chemistry, even if not synthetic. But I digress. 

This post is because henna was my entry ticket into the world of cosmetic chemistry. In 2012, I was still a student at the university, studying pharmaceutical chemistry and technology. So I was generally interested in chemistry and formulation, but I had never really dabbled in the chemistry of cosmetics. One day, I started to wonder if there was a way to dye my hair red without damaging it, and a few Google searches later, I landed on a very old Italian forum dedicated to long hair, and I found out about henna. 

Many people who did henna and were interested in organic cosmetics ended up in the DIY world. Since I was a chemist (or a soon-to-be chemist), I soon started to make cosmetics as a hobby and deepened my knowledge of cosmetic chemistry. 

So, back to henna. I’ve been hennaing (?) my hair for thirteen years now, and I think I can say I’ve gathered some basic knowledge about what one can do with it. 

Here are some things I’d like to share about it. 

Just a little disclaimer here: this is just some chemistry and cosmetics talk. Nothing of this is medical advice. Allergies to plants and, frankly, to any kind of cosmetic preparation happen. So before you do anything, be sure you make a patch test to see if everything’s alright. 

Which colors can you obtain with henna and plants? 

A first rule of thumb when dyeing hair with plants is that you can only “add up” to your natural color, and you cannot lighten your hair.  So the color you will achieve will depend on your natural base. That said, you can dye your hair from ginger to dark red with henna (Lawsonia inermis) and from brown to pitch black with indigo (Indigofera tinctoria, on its own or together with Lawsonia inermis). There’s a third plant that can be used to highlight (already existing) blonde tones, and that’s cassia (Cassia obovata). 

Here is my hair when I used to dye it red with henna and when I switched to black with indigo.

The chemistry behind these dyes

I’ll make it very short here. Leaves of Lawsonia inermis (the “red” henna) contain the molecule lawsone. The dry leaves of this plant do not dye, because the lawsone in that form is in the “hennoside” form (it’s a precursor form attached to other “pieces”). When mixed with water to form a paste, the dyeing molecule will be released from the leaves and oxidized, and can attach to keratin - the molecule that is in hair, nails, and skin. This stain is orange, and builds up and darkens with multiple applications of henna. 

Here is the reaction that leads to the release of the lawsone molecule, if you want to look at some chemical structures (from Maslovaric et al., Plants 2021, 10 (2): 237)

The leaves of Indigofera tinctoria contain another glycoside (indican) that, when mixed with water, will release indoxyl. This is a blue dye, but won’t dye hair blue - on its own, it’s rather a grayish hue. Generally, it is mixed with Lawsonia inermis to achieve various shades of brown, or used right after Lawsonia to dye the hair pitch black.

Cassia obovata is generally referred to as a “colorless henna”, but it does contain at least one molecule that may stain the hair with a yellowish/golden hue (chrysophanol). 

The good thing about these plants is that their dyes simply attach to the hair, without denaturing its structure. Lawsonia and Cassia also have some kind of conditioning effect, so the hair looks very shiny and healthy, especially if you’re consistent with the applications. I personally find that the shades one can get with Lawsonia and Indigo are always unique, since they build up on the natural color beneath, and have a rich variety of highlights under different lights, which makes the color look much more natural as compared to traditional hair dye. 

How to use them

Henna / Ginger to dark red

First, you should make sure that what you’re using is 100% pure henna leaves, and not some mixture with other dyes (a common one is sodium picramate), and possibly from an organic certified source. I’m a chemist, and I’m certainly not against synthetic compounds that have been deemed safe enough to be commercialized. Still, in the magical world of henna, sometimes controls are a little more superficial, depending on where the product comes from. The mixture with synthetic compounds sometimes may react with your skin and/or with previous traditional hair dyes you may have done, so it’s better to be safe than sorry. Just buy a nice organic certified henna that does not contain anything other than “Lawsonia inermis leaves”. 

In the strange world of organic cosmetics on the internet you’ll find all sorts of exotic mixtures on how to “spike” the henna dye or how to allegedly shift the tone towards ginger or towards cherry red etc. Trust me, I come from Italy, and the Italian community is really creative in this regard. But I find that most of it, if not all, is actually bullshit. 

So just keep things simple: mix henna with water that contains something making the pH acidic, like apple cider vinegar, or lemon juice, or citric acid. Ideally, you could measure the pH of the water you’re using with a pH strip and make sure that the pH is about 4-5 (it takes very little vinegar or citric acid to get there). The temperature of the water depends on when you plan to apply the henna: if you use warm water (let’s say 70°C), the dye will be released very fast and you should apply the paste immediately. If you use cold water, the dye will be released in about 8-12 hours. You can also freeze the paste to block the release and use it at a later time. 

You should apply the paste on clean hair, possibly rinsed with mildly acidic water if you live in an area with hard water. Then you keep the henna paste on for a while (the longer you keep it on, the darker the shade) but I would personally not go beyond 4-5 hours. What will really make the shade darker is, in my experience, rather the number of applications and not so much the length of each application. 

Finally, you can wash your hair and shouldn't wash it again for at least a couple of days. If the henna is of good quality, you should be able to wash it out without using any shampoo or conditioner. 

Indigo / brown to pitch black

Again, make sure you're using pure indigo (Indigofera tinctoria) leaves and not a mixture containing synthetic dyes like paraphenylenediamine. If you bought a mixture for brown hair, the INCI may report Lawsonia inermis and/or Cassia obovata or other plants, too, and that's ok. However, even if you intend to dye your hair brown, I would recommend finding an organic certified supplier selling 100% indigo and 100% henna and learning to make your own mixture.

To prepare the indigo paste, mix it with warm water and apply it to the hair immediately. Otherwise, the indoxyl molecule will combine with itself and not attach to the hair. 

In my years of using indigo, I found that a sign of a good-quality indigo is when, after you mix it with warm water, you see the iridescent dark blue shine forming on the surface of the paste in those minutes after you mix it and before you apply it. That dark shine is the dye formed by the indoxyl molecule when it combines with itself - it won’t dye the hair, but it’s a sign that the molecule is indeed there. It’s also a sign of how fast this molecule dimerizes, and of how fast you should be when applying it. 

To achieve brown shades, indigo is mixed with lawsonia. The more indigo is present, the darker the brown will be. To obtain a pitch black, typically, people apply a paste of 100% lawsonia first with the method above, rinse it, and then apply a paste of 100% indigo (with a shorter application time - two hours is enough). I find it cumbersome, but it’s indeed the way to get to pitch black if you start from light brown or red or have gray hair. 

In my experience (and now the henna/indigo truthers will gasp in horror), I find that once you reach the black you want, you can also go ahead without doing this double application and by using a mixture of indigo and lawsonia that contains about 80-90% of indigo and the remaining of lawsonia. 

Cassia / colorless or slightly blonde highlight

I repeat: you cannot lighten your hair with any of these plants, so when I say “slightly blonde highlights,” it means that you’ll see such highlights only if you already have some. 

If you’re just using Cassia as a conditioning mask, you can mix it with warm water and apply it to the hair immediately. Then you can keep it on for 1-2 hours or so, and rinse. 

If you’re trying to highlight some blonde tones, you can try mixing it with warm water and wait for 8-12 hours before applying it to the hair, and then keep it on for longer (for example, 4 hours). 

There are other plants that one can use to condition hair without staining it and changing its color. Some are scams, others are actually really cool. There are also plants one can use to replace shampoos, and I love them. But maybe that’s a topic for another post.
