My piece for @chaosblasphemy 's DTIYS (≧▽≦)
Further rambling and full drawing under cut 👇
First off, love the tiny Shadow chronicles series. I wanna adopt baby Shadow and protect him from the plot, (◍•ᴗ•◍)❤. Big sister Maria and little brother Shadow for the win ( ꈍᴗꈍ) no trauma for the cutie pies
Second, damn I outdid myself with this piece, I'm surprised at myself. o((*^▽^*))o especially since this is my second time seriously rendering a piece with this artstyle of mine (Shading hair is still a bitch tho, no matter the art style I use + the fact I haven't fully rendered hair in a lot while, no surprise why 🐢😅) and as usually we gonna ignore any imperfections cause I'm a damn perfectionist that needs to chill
Also, I realized a little too late that Maria was actually wearing a sweater of some sort, so yeah... there's that I guess...whoops? (─.─||)
And finally but not least, the fully drawing without the crop
Tumblr media
Peace ✌️ (◕ᴗ◕✿)
Thanks for listening to my rambling
And I hope you like this piece @chaosblasphemy

Xaden felt as though the very air had been stolen from his lungs, suffocating under the weight of Briar's piercing gaze.
“She could have died!” he shouted, fists clenched on the table, the wood creaking under the force of his lean. Every word dripped with a blend of fear and fury that hung thick in the air between them.
“But she didn’t,” Briar replied, her voice a calm oasis in the storm of his emotions. She observed as Xaden’s anger roiled around him like a tempest, consuming everything in its path.
He struggled to draw a breath, acutely aware of Briar’s eyes tracing the contours of his turmoil. The memory of their daughter, Lyra, launching herself from the edge of a cliff, played on repeat in his mind. “How can you be so calm?” he gasped, frustration leaking through every syllable.
“Because she’s alive,” Briar said softly. “Despite how reckless that was, I know our daughter. She wasn’t trying to be foolish; she was trying to impress you.”
“I’m supposed to accept that she’d risk her life just to earn my approval?”
“No! You’re supposed to understand that she made a mistake, but she’s okay.” A sigh escaped her lips, heavy with the weight of years spent watching their daughter grapple with self-worth. “She sees you every day with the older kids—hard but fair. You respect them, and they respect you. That’s what she craves.”
Xaden’s heart twisted at the thought. “They’re preparing to leave for Valraithe.”
“She wants you to see her as one of your soldiers, someone worthy of respect,” Briar pressed. “She already believes she’s not good enough to be your daughter. In trying to be what she thinks you want, she’s losing herself.” Silence hung between them, thick and unresolved, until Briar’s voice broke through the stillness. “She wasn’t reckless; she was desperate for you to notice her.”
When Lyra failed to show up for dinner and her absence lingered like a shadow in their home, dread coiled in Xaden's stomach. As dusk turned to night and the chill seeped in, he tore himself away from the table, cloak gripped in hand, his heart pounding with the urgent need to find her before darkness swallowed her whole.
He just knew where she was—where he used to go when the world felt too heavy, a sanctuary against the storm of emotions raging within him. The hills outside Riorson House rose gently, their verdant slopes bathed in the fading light of dusk. There, under the gnarled branches of the ancient oak that had been a silent witness to their family's joys and sorrows, he found her.
Lyra was curled up tight, arms wrapped around her knees, her small frame trembling slightly against the cool evening air. Shadows danced across her face, the moonlight illuminating the tear tracks that glistened like tiny rivers against her flushed cheeks.
As he approached, Xaden noticed the way she kept her gaze fixed on the ground, the lush grass beneath her feet seemingly more interesting than the world around her. She didn't flinch when he draped his cloak over her—his heart constricted at the sight of her shivering.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered, her voice barely breaking through the silence that enveloped them. “I just—I thought if you saw I could do something like the older kids, you'd be proud instead of... so disappointed.” The weight of her words hung heavily in the air, each syllable laced with a desperation that twisted like a knife in his gut.
Kneeling beside her, he moved slowly, careful not to startle her like a wild creature cornered in the woods. “I’ve never been disappointed in you, Lyra,” he said softly, searching for her eyes, which remained downcast. “And I wasn’t earlier, but I was scared. I was furious because for one breathless second, I thought you might fall, and I wouldn’t be able to catch you.”
She raised a trembling hand to wipe her face with the fabric of his cloak, her movements small and hesitant. “You never get scared,” she murmured, the innocence of her belief cutting deeper than he anticipated.
“I do. Quite often,” he replied, nudging her gently with his shoulder in an attempt to lighten the atmosphere. “Do you remember how your mom used to always ask me if I felt a pull when I got home from missions?”
Lyra nodded, her big, expressive eyes finally finding his, brimming with curiosity and concern.
“That’s because I once felt a pull, and let it drag me down,” he confessed, his tone somber yet firm, knowing he was treading into dangerous territory.
Briar and Xaden had sworn to protect their children from the darker chapters of their past, the memories of his battle with being Venin remaining locked away, but he understood the importance of imparting the wisdom he had gained through hardship.
“It was when the Dark Wielders planned an attack at Basgiath and they wanted Mama and Aunt Violet,” he began, the memories stirring like a tempest within him, ready to share the truth that might finally bridge the chasm between them.
Lyra's voice trembled with worry, a soft whisper barely breaking through the quiet of the twilight around them. “They didn’t hurt them, did they?”
Xaden felt the weight of her words settle heavily on his chest, the memories of that harrowing night clawing their way back to the forefront of his mind. “No, because I felt the pull, and I followed it.” He sighed deeply, the sound escaping like a lost breath. The air around them grew thick with unspoken fears, and he could sense the flicker of anxiety in her wide, innocent eyes. “I was terrified of what that would mean—what it could unravel.” He paused, searching for the right words as the darkness of the night enveloped them, wrapping around their small haven beneath the oak like a shroud. “That I wouldn't be enough anymore for your mama, or for Sgaeyl.”
“But Mama loves you. So does Sgaeyl.” Her voice was steady, unwavering in its belief, and it pulled at his heartstrings.
“And Mama trusted me,” he continued, his voice heavy with the weight of regret. “Even when I couldn’t trust myself. Even when I almost hurt her.” The thought of that night—a tempest of chaos and darkness—lingered like a ghost in his mind, shadows of fear and remorse casting over his every thought.
Lyra shifted closer, her hope bubbling to the surface. “How’d you fight it?” she asked, her bright eyes mirroring his own, seeking solace and answers.
“I thought about Mama, and her love,” he said, feeling warmth spread in his chest at the memory of her unwavering strength. “But then Sgaeyl was in danger, and I fell.” He shivered involuntarily, the chill of recollection creeping through him like an unwelcome visitor, pulling him back to that fateful night south of Draithus.
“You turned into a Venin?” she asked, her voice laced with fear, causing him to see the shadow of dread flicker across her features.
“I did.” The admission hung between them, a fragile thread, and he could see Lyra instinctively backing away, the fear etched in her expression making his heart ache. “I made your mom Duchess and I left her in charge of our home.”
“But you’re not one now?” she asked tentatively, a hint of disbelief mingling with her uncertainty.
“No.” The finality of his response resonated in the cool air, but her next question pierced through the fragile peace they had begun to establish.
“But there’s no cure for Venin; that's what Aunt Violet and Uncle Aaric said.”
Xaden chuckled softly, the sound a warm reprieve from the tension swirling around them. “The real reason that I don’t have any urges to channel anymore…” He caught her gaze, full of curiosity, as she scooted closer, eager to learn. “is because of you.”
“Me?”.
Xaden smiled softly, his heart aching with a bittersweet warmth. “Mama said it best after she found me.”
Your love for those close to you was enough to break the ice from under you. So let a new love be enough to make you swim. Swim for the life we created.
Lyra’s brow furrowed, her innocent curiosity still battling the shadows of fear that clung to her thoughts. “So Mama saved you?”
Her tone echoed the authoritative cadence of her mother, the same tone used in meetings when her mother was correcting someone’s misstep. It stirred something deep within Xaden—a reminder of Briar’s fierce love and unwavering strength, a love that had become a lifeline in his darkest moments.
“Your mama found me and told me she was pregnant with you,” he began, his voice low and reverent, as if sharing a sacred truth. “And in that moment, I knew deep down that you deserved to have both parents growing up. So I resisted.”
The shadows of that time loomed over him, a chilling reminder of the fear that had gripped his heart like a vise. “I was terrified every day after that. Terrified that I would slip up, that I’d hurt you.”
He looked into her eyes, now shimmering with understanding and concern. “But then they placed you in my arms, and everything changed. I knew I would do anything to be there, to watch you grow up and to love you. You, my Little Star, are the light that guided me out of the darkness.”
As he tugged her closer into his side, he felt the warmth of her small frame melt into him, a perfect fit. Her smile blossomed, illuminating the dusky shadows that clung to their small haven beneath the oak. “You’re brave, Lyra,” he said, the words spilling from his heart, each one a gentle caress. “And smart. And better than I was at your age.nBut I don’t expect you to be perfect. I don’t even want you to try. I just want you to be a kid for a little while longer, okay?”
She nodded, her arms wrapping around him like vines seeking strength and stability. “I’m glad you’re not the bad guy anymore.”
His laughter erupted, a rich, genuine sound. He held her just a little tighter, savoring the moment, the joy of being present in her life. “Me too, Little Star. Me too.”

Masterlist
You were five years old when your parents decided to move to a house closer to your father’s office. The warm summer sun bathed everything in a golden glow, and your sparkling eyes eagerly took in the new neighborhood through the opened car’s window. The gentle breeze carried the scent of blooming flowers, adding to the homely feel of this new place. As you spotted a playground, a surge of excitement rushed through your tiny body. You bounced up and down in the car seat, pointing at the playground as the car passed it. Your mom turned her head from the driver’s seat, her smile as warm and bright as the morning itself. “You can play there tomorrow, honey. Today, we’ll tidy up our house and greet the neighbors.” You nodded enthusiastically.
The new house was bigger than your previous one. A small garden immediately caught your eye. The shrubs were neatly trimmed, the flowers came in different colors, and there was a small pond with fish. Your mother held your hand as you entered the house. Most of the stuff was already organized, with only a few boxes left to unpack. Your father picked them up from the car, which thankfully wasn't much.
Delighted, you ran around excitedly, exploring each room. But then, your mother called you over to the kitchen. You huffed as you walked to her, slouching and stomping your feet deliberately.
She was wrapping the daifuku your family would give to the neighbors as an introduction. She moved to a lower table in the living room so you could sit next to her and help. “Be nice and make new friends here, okay?” You frowned. “Why?” She smiled and pinched your cheek.
“Well, I think we will be here for a long time.”
“And when you have new friends, you can introduce them to your baby sis too!” said your mother, placing her hand on her round belly.
She was nearing the end of her second trimester, and you were amazed at how her belly grew bigger each day. The idea of a little human coming out of your mother’s body fascinated you. She had explained that you were once in her belly too, which you found hard to believe. But how else could you be here? You couldn’t wait for your ‘baby sis’ to come out and prove it.
You clapped your hands. “Okay, Mama! I will invite baby sis to play with my new friends! Does that mean baby sis will come out soon?”
Your mother laughed, “Yes, honey.”
As your father finished organizing the last box, you and your mother also finished wrapping up the gift. You all rested and warmed up to the new house. When the sun was set, you dressed up to introduce yourselves to the neighborhood. Your mother reminded you again  to behave just before you left. Frowning, you replied, “But I always behave, Mama!”
“Sure you do, and I want you to keep it up,” she said with a smile.
﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌
This was the third house you visited, located directly in front of your own. The two previous houses were the ones directly to your left and right. The night air had turned chilly, making you pull your jacket tighter around you. This house also had a garden, with a pond slightly larger than yours, though adorned with fewer flowers. The building was painted a muted brown, blending into the shadows of the evening. You were still observing your surroundings when a lady opened the door after your father rang the bell, the warm light from inside spilling out and casting a welcoming glow on the doorstep.
She smiled warmly at your family, and you noticed her belly was rounded like your mother’s. “Mama, she has a belly like you!” you exclaimed excitedly, pointing at her.
Your mother was about to scold you for being rude but was interrupted by the lady. “Oh my, you’re the new neighbors right in front of us! Please come in!” she beamed.
Inside, your family was greeted by the lady’s husband. As your mother placed the gift on the coffee table, they invited you to stay for a chat.
They introduced themselves to your family. The lady's name was Yuuko and her husband’s name was Makoto, with Suna as their surname. It turned out that Yuuko was indeed pregnant like your mother, and they had close due dates, which made them bond instantly. Makoto then announced he wanted to introduce someone to you. Your ears perked up. Who could it be? You looked at your parents, who smiled back at you. “Looks like you’ll have a new friend,” your mother said. You jumped to your feet, excited. Finally, a friend! The other two houses didn’t have kids your age, only older ones. The prospect of having a friend your age made you brighten up instantly.
As Makoto returned to the living room, he held a boy by his shoulders. He looked about your age, his expression stoic but his eyes beautiful and narrow. Looks like his mother, you thought. They stopped in front of you, who grinned happily. Usually, you weren’t confident with your peers, but the excitement of moving into a new house and your mother’s earlier encouragement made you feel braver. You stretched out your hand to introduce yourself. He looked at your hand for a while, unsure of what to do. His father was about to guide him when you abruptly took his hand and shook it enthusiastically. “This is how you introduce yourself to a friend!” you exclaimed.
Confused, he stared at your joined hands. “A friend?” he asked.
“Yes! I’m ___ and I will be your new friend!” you sang, still shaking his hand.
He looked at his father, then back at you. “Okay. I’m Suna Rintarou. I’ve never had a friend,” he mumbled.
You made an O with your mouth. “I’m so happy to be your first friend, then!”
After that, all of you gathered in the living room, chatting about the preschool you would soon attend. You bounced on your seat when you learned that Suna Rintarou went there too. He would be your school friend! You glanced at him happily. It seemed your mother was right; this place would be your home for a long time. Perhaps, this stoic boy would become more than just a schoolmate—maybe, just maybe, he would become your best friend. Your heart swelled with anticipation, and a smile spread across your face.
﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌
It's been around two months since you moved in, and you found yourself adapting seamlessly to the new environment. Every morning, your mother would wake you up around 7 to take a shower and get dressed for preschool. You'd see your father briefly in the genkan, waving at him before he left for work. Then, you’d have breakfast at the kitchen table while your mother prepared your lunchbox.
An arrangement had been made between your mother and Yuuko. Yuuko would take you and Rintarou to preschool in the morning, while your mother would pick you both up afterward. Yuuko, like her husband, was an office worker, but her workday started later than usual, making her perfectly suited to drop you both off before heading to work. Your mother, a housewife, stayed at home most of the time, making it easy for her to pick you both up from preschool before the typical workday ended. The two women had grown close, their personalities clicking effortlessly. They were around the same age, had kids the same age (you and Rintarou, and also the soon-to-be-born children in their bellies).
Today was like any other day. Your mother took you to the Suna house, crossing the street. As you walked, the cooler temperatures of late autumn greeted you with a refreshing chill. Your mother had you wear a scarf to keep warm.
After ringing the bell once, the door opened quickly, revealing little Rintarou, already dressed to go. “Hello, Rin!” your mother cheered at him. “Where is your mother?”
“She’s upstairs, picking something,” he said, pointing inside the house.
“Well, I’ll leave ___ here then. Thank you!” Rintarou nodded at her.
Your mother kissed you on the cheek and walked back to your house. Rintarou took your hand and pulled you inside.
“Your hand is cold,” he commented.
You made a freezing noise and whined, “Well, of course! You’ll see, it’s gettin’ colder outside!”
He left you in the living room and went to his room. You were confused until he reappeared with two pairs of gloves. “That for me?” you asked, surprised.
“Yeah, you can wear these. But give them back to me after school,” he said, handing you a pair.
“Woah! Thanks, Rin!” you beamed, putting on the gloves.
“Whatever,” Rintarou huffed.
From the moment you got to know Rintarou, you thought he seemed more mature than you, even though you were the same age. Little did you know, his mother was always reminding him to be more thoughtful towards you. Both his mother and father wanted him to grow up to be a gentleman. His father taught him how to respect women. With a baby sister on the way, he needed to learn how to be a good little man in the family. Rintarou sometimes frowned at these instructions. You? You seemed like a normal kid, kind of rowdy, even. You often yelled at boys in the preschool, picked fights, and followed your favorite teacher around annoyingly. You were no different from the boys and definitely wilder than him. He sighed but obeyed his parents nonetheless.
Not long after, Yuuko came down from upstairs.
“Hello, ___! Are you ready?” She greeted you warmly. You nodded, clutching the strap of your bag.
She put Rintarou’s lunch box in his bag and helped him put it on. Then, you walked to the car and took a seat in the back.
﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌
After some sensory play in the playground, the kids were given free time to play by themselves. You were eager to try the yellow double slide with a bridge between them. Then, you saw Rintarou sitting in the sandbox and decided to invite him to join you.
“Rin! Let’s try that cool slide,” you said, grabbing his hand and pointing to the slide.
He contemplated for a second but then got up. “Okay.”
As you walked to the slide, you heard a commotion behind you. Turning around, you saw a group of boys from your class, laughing and pointing at you and Rintarou.
“Look at ‘em! Holding hands and all!”
“I bet they kiss when no one’s around!”
“Hey!” You moved forward, your face flushed with anger. “Stop it!”
“What? It’s true! You both always come together and hold hands,” one of them said while the others laughed.
“He’s my friend!” you said firmly.
While you argued, Rintarou stood behind you, puzzled and unsure how to respond. He knew for sure that you both never kissed. Isn’t that like an adult thing? Kids aren’t allowed to do that. He remembered how his parents always covered his eyes during kissing scenes of lovers on TV. He sometimes secretly caught his parents kissing, too. So, when adults like each other, they kiss? The thought of kissing you felt strange to him.
“Shut your damn mouth!”
Rintarou snapped out of his thoughts when he heard you say that.
“Bad word! She’s saying a bad word!”
You looked terrifying as you ran to chase the boys. Some girls cheered for you from the side, “Go, ___! Catch ‘em!”
The playground filled with noise—your annoyed screams, the boys' laughter, and the girls' cheering. Rintarou watched the whole debacle with raised eyebrows. You were something else. Why didn’t you just ignore those stupid boys? You’d been here for only two months, and his once tranquil life was already changing. He wondered how his life would be with you in the years to come.

Finished my reread of Contagion. It still holds up in terms of emotions, even if the ‘how people behave in a disease outbreak’ is a bit shaky (Helena manages to be the only person to put on a face covering for the short in Batman Chronicles #4 – let’s all say thank you to Matt Haley for being the only sensible artist).
Beggar’s Feast remains as emotionally devastating as always; I hadn’t read it straight from Alfred treating Tim through to Tim feeling like he was waking up for a while, and so I had forgotten it starts with a fake out over Jack being told Tim is Robin. I hadn’t thought about the parallels here between what dream Jack says here to Tim compared to what Jack says to adult Tim in Sins of Youth to what Jack says to Tim in Willingham’s run and then Identity Crisis, because usually I’m focusing on the emotions around Janet. Completely heartbreaking how much Tim just wants to stop concealing things from those he loves, and have them tell him how proud they are.
Also this is very much a ‘Tim is everyone’s beloved and cared for little brother/son’ story, which is a nice change after Knightfall. Tim’s just running around allying up with everyone and anyone (oh look! Selina’s here! And JPV’s also here! Guess we’re working together!) and telling Alfred to hide it from Bruce, with the result Bruce frowns at Tim for like a microsecond over his ‘allies’ and goes ‘look here I found you Nightwing to team up with instead. Hang out with HIM’ and then Dick and Tim proceed to have fun running around Gotham together and then team up with Huntress. Also the bit where Tim gets to drive the earthmover with Bruce, Dick and Huntress riding in the shovel is hilarious. His tiny joyful face! And then he proceeds to get sick and keep falling off things and everyone worries about him, and then he goes out immediately after recovering and gets wobbly and falls asleep on a rooftop, where Selina finds him and STILL worries, even though she’s still like “I can’t be having with liking this kid. Oh no. He’s adorable.”
Never going to get over Alfred deliberately faking Dick out about Tim dying. It wasn't that funny, Alfred. Absolute asshole move. Dick spends far too much of this entire story making his "oh no! Tim!" face and looking devastated. He can't cope with this! That's his Robin!
It’s also hilariously funny to me how everyone’s busy ushering Tim away from JPV, while Jean-Paul’s nobly like “this is clearly my burden as the Order of St Dumas is involved” and then proceeds to be the failson we all know him to be. I will never get over the “JPV tears across the world with this recipe for a cure” bit that is immediately then squashed with “so Lilhy just…faxed it to Gotham and saved 10 hours or so”. Amazing. A++. I laugh every time. I do enjoy that Denny is so obsessed with making sure his blorbo is tortured by everything possible and just generally an absolute idiot.
I read it in my trade of Contagion this time, which I’m glad to have: interestingly the trade also has some of the Robin, Batman and Shadow of the Bat issues following Contagion before Legacy also collected in it, which I hadn’t realised – it means I own more of Robin 93 than I thought I did, even though there’s still a few issue gap between the end of my War of the Dragons trade (which finishes as #22) and my Contagion trade (which picks up at #27). Then Legacy Vol 1 covers the remainder of the Catwoman, ‘Tec and Robin lead ins into Legacy Vol 2 and Legacy proper. Which, I really wish I owned vol 2, but it has recently been changing hands on ebay for 100-200USD soooo….yeah. Still haven’t bought it. (There’s a copy that sold for 330USD/500AUD in February. Holy shit)

Heads-up, Minions!
The description for THE CHRONICLES OF VIKTOR VALENTINE: WHAT LURKS IN THE SHADOWS just dropped!
New York Times bestselling author Z Brewer returns to the tiny town of Nowhere, where Viktor Valentine is facing down the world’s most dangerous dinner invitation from the mother of all vampires…literally!
Viktor Valentine wishes that his biggest issue was getting his hands on an autographed copy of the new Screaming Meemies album. Instead, he’s in trouble at school, Alys isn’t talking to him, Damon is hanging out with Viktor’s mortal enemy, and his dad won’t stop telling terrible jokes.
Oh, and Lilith, the dangerously powerful mother of vampirekind, is looking for him.
As if all that isn’t bad enough, Viktor received a special invitation from Lilith. He definitely doesn’t want to accept, especially since the more he learns about vampires, the more danger he finds himself in. There’s also the matter of his unique abilities, which no one is willing to give him a clear answer on. Is there anyone in Nowhere who Viktor can trust to tell him the truth?
