i have photophobia, and in my story, theres some characters with very light eyes due to magic/fantasy reasons. their true genetic eye colour would not be this unnatural pale colour. its never occurred to me to give these characters photophobia. im now trying to decide whether to, and was curious as to other photophobic peoples opinions on it! im not sure how much the eye structure is actually changed yet (versus illusions/similar). theres other characters with photophobia too!

Honestly it wouldn't occur to me either, but it sounds very interesting. As far as I'm aware the severity of not having iris pigment leads to photophobia due to the light actually passing through the iris (and not just the pupil). Whether this is or isn't the case for your characters is kinda up to you, I think. There are people with healthy light blue eyes who don't have photophobia, and people with light blue eyes with iris transillumination who have photophobia. It's more of a problem of how the iris pigment is structured rather than how it visually looks to my understanding.
All that said, I think it would be a really interesting angle to explore. Both in how it affects the magically photophobic characters (are sunglasses really common?) and the medically photophobic characters (are they assumed to be magical? if the magic one is temporary or can be 'turned off', is this what is expected from the non-magical characters?). Are they seen differently? Which one of these is more common in the universe? Is the magic photophobia as wide of a spectrum as regular photophobia, or is it more specific? And if the characters with magic photophobia have it permanently/long-term/often, what's the line between that and just an in-universe medical condition (are there ophthalmologists who specialize in Magic Reasons)? Does the higher amount of photophobic people impact the universe's accessibility, culture, medicine, architecture?
TLDR; worldbuilding potential that could be fun to explore. And since you have photophobia yourself, you can IMO do whatever you want.

I have to wear special glasses because my irises need protection from excess light and strain or I will eventually go blind. I have to wear a second, more specialized pair of glasses with a shorter focal length when I use any backlit screens or read at a close distance, in addition to *needing* sunglasses on top of my regular tinted glasses. For one pair of tinted everyday glasses I was out about $500, another $250 for removable sun lenses, and then another $450 for special focal length screen glasses. Again, these are very much not optional according to my doctor. I'm very lucky to have a wife that works and can support me, but this was before I had vision insurance through her and these costs had to come out of pocket. Bilateral iris transillumination is fairly rare from what I understand, but that still doesn't make this form of upcharging anything approaching acceptable.
Made the mistake of bringing up that needing glasses is a disability on tiktok and people got real mad.
“You can fix it with glasses” yeah, cuz they’re a disability aid? But like, I still have to pay 160 bucks to use my own fucking eyes?
Like, by definition, if your eyes do not work without aid, you have a disability to see.
Having a disability doesn’t automatically put you in what people consider the “disabled” category, but that doesn’t change the fact that it is in fact, a disability.
