City of Second Chances
Hozier x reader
Hozier Masterlist
Author's note: I swear I'm gonna get back to posting the ongoing fics.
Summary: A year after the demise of their relationship, Andrew and Y/n reflect on what used to be.
Warnings: Angst, the briefest mentions of SMUT (like, blink and you'll miss it.)

Much like him, Las Vegas is restless – though, he thinks that may be the only similarity between him and the dazzling city below him. He isn't glamorous, he isn't unrelenting, he isn’t filled to the brim with hopes and dreams. He isn’t blessed with the grace of second chances.
Because if he was, she would be there with him tonight.
He’d make a joke about getting hitched at one of those drive through chapels, she’d humorously accept his proposal and throw her head back and laugh – but deep down they’d both be hoping that the other is just a little serious.
She would have said yes if he asked, right? Like, for real. The right way. Andrew thinks – knows – that he’s let the opportunity pass him over more times than he can count.
Fucking Vegas, and their fake Eiffel Tower, their tacky drive-thru chapels, and those silly plastic rings – like the one he carries in his wallet.
Andrew’s never been the type to enjoy that sort of fast-paced, glitzy lifestyle that the sleepless city offers, but he used to love that place – just like Y/n used to love him.
Standing at the expansive, floor-to-ceiling window of his hotel room, he can’t help but feel a sense of disenchantment with the place; the people ten stories below him, decked off in glittering dressed and expensive suits, the plastic palm trees cemented to the sidewalk and the reflective, gold-varnished doors that lead to dizzying casinos. He’s so removed from it all – Andrew feels like he’s peering in from the outside at some mystical land that he doesn’t quite understand.
But he's walked those streets, thrown money away at blackjack tables behind those doors and gotten blind-drunk at a couple of those bars. He’s done it with her – but it must've been a lifetime ago.
He wonders if one year ago feels that far away for her too. Does she look at all the photographs she used to take and feel like they belong to another version of herself, one that’s experienced the best of the world, but a lifetime ago?
He wonders if she thinks of him when she puts on those stunning silver heels or that blue dress that clung to her curves like wet fabric. What about when she hears Dusty Springfield's voice coming over the record player – does she still have the record?
Does she think of him when she pours herself a glass of wine? Does that one, far away memory come rushing back to her, like dandelion fluff on the wind – like the subtle ache of a wound that just won’t heal right.
She thinks of him when she’s barefoot.
That night in the hotel, when they got into the elevator she started complaining about how her feet hurt. It might have been drunkenness, it might have been because he’s the sweetest man she’s ever had the privilege of knowing, but Andrew immediately got on his knees and started undoing the straps of her heels – the same pair that she can’t stand to look at anymore.
“Want my shoes?” He offers earnestly, looking up at her in a way that makes her reach out and cup his face, her thumb roving the apple of his cheek. Most of the time, its the most mundane things that remind Y/n why she loves him as much as she does; the way he looks with his bowtie and the top two buttons of his dress shirt undone, the way he looks at her like there’s no one else he’d rather look at – his eagerness to offer his shoes when she makes the mistake of wearing her most uncomfortable heels for a three hour event.
“They’ll be too big,” she giggles, and Andrew flashes her that painfully rare smile that he wears so very well.
“Then I’ll carry you,” he determines upon straightening up, her silver heels still hooked in his long fingers.
“You’re too drunk for that,” Y/n counters, noting the redness in his face that only comes from a few drinks too many. Still, Andrew bends forward and loops an arm around the back of her thighs to throw her over his shoulder as the elevator doors slide open. “Andy!” She squeals, hair falling over her face as blood rushes to her head. Its a dizzying experience, especially considering she already isn’t in the best frame of mind – she’s suddenly beginning to regret that last cocktail.
“I’ve got this darlin’,” he huffs. He seems to have a handle on things too…..until he trips on the threshold of the elevator and stumbles forward. He might have caught himself if he hadn’t been so inberated – and hadn't been carrying her in the most impractical way – but he doesn’t and they both hit the carpeted floor with simultaneous ‘omphs’.
“Don’t say it,” he warns, struggling to prop his weight on an elbow so he doesn’t smother her.
“I told you so,” Y/n giggles, before wincing at the pain in her back.
“And she said it,” Andrew teases and then his smile softens, “you okay?” He asks softly, slipping his free hand behind her head so it isn’t resting on the floor.
“Better than okay,” Y/n hums, reaching between them to touch his face again. When she does, her eye catches a glimpse of the thin, plastic band adorned little bits of coloured glass meant to look like gems on her left hand. It doesn’t exactly go with the rich, jewel-toned blue stain of her dress – Andrew had gotten it out of one of those vending machines earlier, and now he’s wearing its plainer counterpart. They hadn’t made it to the chapel, but it seemed silly not to wear the rings after already buying them. Lifting her head a little, she meets his lips, tasting the heady combination of champagne and whiskey on his tongue.
“We should get off the floor,” he mumbles against her lips before stumbling to a stand and offering his hand to her. When she gets to her feet, it takes them another moment to collect their bearings before finally starting the walk down the hallway to their room – that time with her bare feet on the ground.
So now, she thinks of him when she’s barefoot. And when she looks at that dress, or the plastic ring still tucked away in her jewelry box – or thinks about Vegas.
Sometimes, the memories are so fresh in her mind that she swears they all happened yesterday; Y/n wonders if it's like that for Andrew – if those moments are all on constant replay in his mind, so achingly fresh that it makes the air thin. It must be some kind of curse not to, Y/n determines, because most times, its the sharpness of those moments that keep her going. It might not be so bad to have lost if she was once loved that deeply – at least she can say she felt it.
With Dusty Springfeild's Look of Love coming over the record player, Y/n drains a bottle of white wine, and deserts the empty bottle on the marble counter that separates the living room from her kitchen. Humming along to the tune – their song – she starts padding towards the sofa when a photograph on the yellow wall catches her eye. That stupid hotel room that overlooks that faux Eiffel tower.
Andrew at the grand piano with a bottle of wine on the top. She knows exactly what he’s playing, she remembers how awful it sounded when he realized the damn thing was woefully out of tune.
What kind of hotel room has an out of tune piano?
She remembers what happened when she distracted him. The coolness of the ivory keys under her skin. That horrifying tune that made them laugh. The tickle of his bead on her neck and the way his hand tangled around her fingers.
“How’s this for a picture?” He mumbles, lips against her skin as blood rushes to her cheeks, but the camera's already been discarded near the empty bottle and its the last thing she’s concerned about.
Fucking Vegas – and their out of tune pianos and fake Effiel towers, Y/n thinks as she takes a drag of her wine.
Great, now she’s thinking of him while she drinks wine.

The avocado tree I started growing from seed over the summer is now almost two feet tall and now has a leaf. Woooot! Now I need to put it in actual soil rather than a cup of water. Time to do some research to find out what it needs.
Being able to grow my own avocados is ideal, seeing as they're getting more expensive. Excess will be donated to local pantries (it's why so many ask for money donations more often than they ask for food) and given to neighbors.
For those who try growing avocados and only get a long stick: cut it. When the first stem reaches around six inches, cut about two inches off. It will then branch out and create a leaf. I've successfully grown more than a dozen avocado trees this way, and have given each of them to random local people after I post pics of the baby trees online.
Update: our winters are too cold here, which means this will be an indoor plant. Pruning it at the correct time will result in it being more like a bush than a tree, which is best indoors. I've seen other fruit trees grown this way, and many produce shit loads of fruit.
Our backyard will be turned into a raised veggie, fruit, and herb garden iver the next several years. My husband hates gardening, so no help there. hEDS means getting down on my knees for hours at a time is a big fuck no, so raised high is best. We do plan on installing a couple greenhouses.
The problem is he won't help set it up, I need to destroy all the grass because I'm allergic (hives within minutes if it touching my skin), I need to remove all the blackberry plants (invasive plant that likes to destroy everything), and my physical disabilities makes this extremely challenging.
Anyone in the Eugene/Springfield region fancy helping me out? First, it's absolute destruction of the front and backyard. I want to kill every plant currently in the ground because of they're either and/or I'm allergic to them. The focus will be the front yard for now because we have some other things that need doing in the back.
Thanks!

The Sign of Four: The Strange Story of Jonathan Small (Part One of Two)
I will split this in two parts as I've got a lot to cover here.
CW for discussions of nasty prison conditions.
The depth of the Thames is about 6.5 metres at low tide in Woolwich, near to the Plumstead Marshes as they were then. However, the river has strong currents and very little visibility, so it would be a risky operation even with 2024 diving technology for some rather small objects.
The rupee originally was a silver coin dating back to ancient times in India, becoming something of a standard currency during the Mughal period. The East India Company introduced paper rupees and while there was an attempt by the British to move their territory to the pound sterling, they soon gave up, minting their own rupees with the British monarch's head on. The currency was also non-decimal. India retained the currency post-independence and went decimal as well.
Mangrove trees are very common in equatorial coastline regions - they can remove salt from the water, which would kill many other trees.
Prisoners set to the Andaman Islands penal colony were forced to work nine to ten hours a day to construct the new settlement, while in chains. Cuts from poisonous plants and friction ulcers from the chains would often get infected, resulting in death.
The convict huts on Ross Island were two-storey affairs, with the bottom as a kitchen and took area, the prisoners sleeping on the upper floor. Designed this way as an anti-malaria measure, they however leaked and the prisoners themselves were constantly damp from the rainfall, offering them little protection from the mosquitoes in any event.
Ague is an obsolete term for malaria; adults experience chills and fever in cycles.
The British would conduct experiments with quinine as a malaria treatment by force-feeding it to the prisoners. This caused severe side effects.
The British would make use of locals as warders, who wore sashes and carried canes. I'd imagine they could probably be quite brutal.
Pershoe is a small town on the River Avon near Worcester. It has a railway station with an hourly service to London, taking just under two hours today.
"Chapel-going" in this context means that the people attended a non-conformist church i.e. not one part of the Church of England.
"Taking the Queen's/King's shilling" was a historical term for joining the armed forces - for the army this was officially voluntary, but sailors could be forcibly recruited, being known as "press-ganged" until 1815. You would be given the shilling upon initial enlistment or tricked into taking it via it being slipped into your opaque beer. You would return the shilling on your formal attestation and then receive a bounty which could be pretty substantial in terms of the average wage, although a good amount of that would then be spent on your uniform. Some enlisted, deserted and then reenlisted multiple times to get multiple payments. The practice officially stopped in 1879, but the slang term remains.
The 3rd Buffs refers to the latter 3rd Battalion, Buffs (East Kent Regiment), a militia battalion that existed from 1760 to 1953, although it effectively was finished in 1919. However, in reality, they did not go to India to deal with the rebellion, instead staying in Great Britain to cover for the regular regiments who did.
The British never formally adopted the Prussian "goose step" instead going for the similar, but less high-kicking, slow march.
The musket would possibly have been the muzzle-loaded Enfield P53, a mass-produced weapon developed at the Royal Small Arms Factory in Enfield. It was itself was the trigger of the Indian Rebellion in 1857 due to the grease used in the cartridges. They would also be heavily used in the American Civil War on both sides, especially the Confederate one as they smuggled a lot of them, with only the Springfield Model 1861 being more widely used. As a result, they are highly sought after by re-enactors. The British used them until 1867, when they switched to the breech-loading Snider-Enfield, many of the P53s being converted.
The crocodile would likely have been a gharial, which mainly eat fish. Hunting and loss of habitat has reduced their numbers massively, with the species considered "Critically Endangered" by the IUCN.
"Coolie" is a term today considered offensive that was used to describe low-wage Indian or Chinese labourers who were sent around the world, basically to replace emancipated slaves. Indentured labourers, basically - something the US banned (except as a riminal punishment) along with slavery in 1865. In theory they were volunteers on a contract with rights and wages, however abuses were rife. Indentured labour would finally be banned in British colonies in 1917.
Indigo is a natural dark blue dye extracted from plants of the Indigofera genus; India produced a lot of it. Today, the dye (which makes blue jeans blue) is mostly produced synthetically.
I have covered the "Indian Mutiny" as the British called it here in my post on "The Crooked Man".
The Agra Fort dates back to 1530 and at 94 acres, it was pretty huge by any standards. Today, much of it is open to tourists (foreigners pay 650 rupees, Indians 50), although there are parts that remain in use by the Indian Army and are not for public access.
"Rajah" meaning king, referred to the many local Hindu monarchs in the Indian subcontinent; there were also Maharajahs or "great kings", who the British promoted loyal rajahs to the rank of. The Muslim equivalent was Nawab. However, a variety of other terms existed. The East India Company and the Raj that succeeded them used these local rulers to rule about a half their territory and a third of the population indirectly, albeit under quite a bit of influence from colonial officials. These rulers were vassals to the British monarch; they would collect taxes and enforce justice locally, although many of the states were pretty small (a handful of towns in some cases) and so they contracted this out to the British. As long as they remained loyal, they could get away with nearly anything.
562 of these rulers were present at the time of Indian independence in 1947. Effectively abandoned by the British (Louis Mountbatten, the last Viceroy, sending out contradictory messages), nearly all of them were persuaded to accede to the new India, where the nationalists were not keen on them, with promises they could keep their autonomy if they joined, but if not, India would not help them with any rebellions. Hyderabad, the wealthiest of the states, resisted and was annexed by force. The ruler of Jammu and Kashmir joined India in exchange for support against invading Pakistani forces, resulting in a war. A ceasefire agreement was reached at the beginning of 1949, with India controlling about two-thirds of the territory; the ceasefire line, with minor adjustments after two further wars in 1965 and 1971, would become known as the Line of Control, a dotted line on the map that is the de facto border and one of the tensest disputed frontiers on the planet.
India and Pakistan initially allowed the princely rulers to retain their autonomy, but this ended in 1956. In 1971 and 1972 respectively, their remaining powers and government funding were abolished.
Many of the former rulers ended up in a much humbler position, others retained strong local influence and a lot of wealth. The Nizam of Hyderbad, Mir Osman Ali Khan was allowed to keep his personal wealth and title after the annexation in 1948 - he had been the richest man in the world during his rule and used a 184-carat diamond as a paperweight, at least until he realised its actual value. The current "pretender", Azhmet Jah, has worked as a cameraman and filmmaker in Hollywood, including with Steven Spielberg.

On this day:
BIZARRE BULLETS
On January 25, 1787, during the tax uprising Shay's Rebellion, troops in Springfield, Massachusetts, were guarding the federal arsenal when they were attacked by rebel forces. Jabez Spicer was one of the insurgents who died that day. When Jabez was shot, he was wearing his brother Daniel's coat—the same coat Daniel had been wearing three years earlier when he was killed by a bullet from the Vermont Militiamen. The fatal shot passed through the same place in the fabric as the bullet that had killed Daniel.
In 1883, a young girl died of unrequited love. Her brother sought out the rejecting suitor, Henry Ziegland of Honey Grove, Texas, intent on revenge. The brother shot at Henry, drawing blood, causing the suitor to faint and the bullet to become lodged in a tree. Thinking that the lover had died, the brother then shot himself. Twenty years later, Henry decided to remove the tree using dynamite. The explosion released the bullet, which shot straight into Henry's head, killing him.

How Gutter Cleaning Saves Massachusetts Homeowners from Expensive Repairs
When people think of home repairs, they often imagine fixing a leaky roof or replacing old windows. But one of the most preventable causes of home damage in Massachusetts is something much simpler: clogged gutters. Ignoring gutter cleaning can lead to costly repairs that go far beyond water drainage issues.
The True Cost of Ignoring Gutter Cleaning
Your gutter system plays a vital role in controlling rainwater and directing it away from your home. When your gutters are blocked, here’s what can happen:
· Roof Damage: Water pools on the roofline, rotting fascia boards and underlayment.
· Foundation Cracks: Overflowing water settles around your foundation and slowly weakens its structure.
· Basement Flooding: Excess water finds its way into your basement, damaging belongings and requiring professional water removal.
· Pest Infestations: Standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes and attracts nesting animals.
· Landscape Erosion: Heavy water runoff can wash away your garden beds or soil.
Each of these issues can cost thousands of dollars to fix—while seasonal gutter cleaning services cost just a fraction.
Why This is Especially Important in Massachusetts
The weather conditions in Massachusetts—especially during spring and fall—create the perfect storm for clogged gutters. Leaves, pine needles, and ice buildup are common culprits. When mixed with heavy rain or melting snow, your gutters quickly become overwhelmed.
With homes in cities like Boston, Worcester, and Springfield exposed to freeze-thaw cycles, it’s crucial to remove blockages before winter sets in. Ice dams, in particular, can destroy your roof’s integrity if your gutters are packed with debris.
Regular Maintenance Means Long-Term Savings
If you schedule bi-annual gutter cleaning (or more, depending on your tree coverage), you can:
· Extend your roof’s lifespan
· Avoid water-related foundation damage
· Prevent mold and wood rot
· Protect your exterior paint and siding
Hiring a professional like Guttahs.com means your gutters will be cleaned thoroughly, inspected for damage, and maintained year-round.
What to Expect from a Gutter Cleaning Service
When you hire a professional Massachusetts gutter cleaning company, here’s what the process looks like:
1. Inspection: The technician checks for signs of damage, wear, and clogs.
2. Debris Removal: Leaves, dirt, and twigs are cleaned out by hand or blower.
3. Flush & Test: Gutters and downspouts are flushed with water to check for flow.
4. Minor Repairs: Loose brackets or disconnected joints may be reattached.
5. Before & After Photos: Many top services offer visual proof of results.
Get It Done Right with Guttahs.com
At Guttahs.com, you’ll receive more than just a quick cleanup. Their trained crew ensures your gutter system is functioning at peak efficiency. Serving homeowners throughout Massachusetts, they bring peace of mind—especially during heavy storm seasons.

A Visit to Dorris Ranch
We woke up to blue sky and sunshine once again. The clouds took over in the middle of the afternoon, still leaving some room for the sun to shine through. Last night’s low was 38 degrees, and we reached a high of 58 before 5 p.m.
The old blood sugar was back up, to 174. Even after last night’s relatively healthy dinner. I’m never quite sure what’s going on.
After we had our coffee and played the Saturday edition of the brain games, we had oatmeal for breakfast. Then we spent a couple of hours taking care of various and sundry chores. Nancy’s were around the house. Mine were online. We also showered and got ready to get out of the house for a little bit.
We went to the Springfield location of Mezza Luna and got a couple of slices of pepperoni pizza for lunch. Then Nancy and I visited Dorris Ranch. We walked around checking out the orchards for the first time in several months. The weather was nice and there were plenty of people checking the place out. A number of the older and sickly trees had been removed, and there were wide swaths of empty land. I had my camera and took more pictures to post later somewhere online.
We grabbed a hot mocha at Old Crow and came home for a nap. Nancy used the heating pad to relieve the pain in her back and hips. I just slept with no help, even though I’ve been experiencing a little pain in my hips as well. It’s just age, is what I’m thinking.
We drove out to the Mohawk Grange around 6 p.m. for long-time family friend Linda’s 80th birthday party. Much of Nancy’s family was present, as were a few other friends. But there were also lots of people we did not know, plus we had no interest in the gambling “fun” or the band that would be playing. So Nancy and I left about 7:45 p.m., while there was still a little light for driving home.
Other than some mac ’n’ cheese and some potato chips, we did not have anything to eat at the party. We each had a boiled egg when we got home, a weak attempt at getting some protein in our diet for the day.
Our streaming for the evening consisted of the final episode of the current “Reacher” series, with the bad guys going down and the good guys managing to escape death. Then we checked out the first episode of the third and final “Bosch:Legacy” series. From the previews that ran at the end of the episode, it looks like we will be meeting Renee Ballard soon. She’s one of Michael Connelly’s newest characters, and she will have her own TV series before long.
It looks like tonight’s low will get to 41 degrees, while tomorrow’s high may reach 56. It also seems like there might be some rain in the latter half of the afternoon, just before we head out to the Hult Center to see the production of “Hamilton” at 7 p.m. The forecast also shows the possibility of more rain each day through Thursday.
