Sun Damage and the Types of Pigmentation It Can Cause
The sun may feel warm and comforting, but prolonged exposure without protection can leave lasting marks on your skin. Sun damage is one of the leading causes of skin pigmentation, especially in regions with high UV index levels. While a healthy glow may seem appealing, the reality is that ultraviolet (UV) rays can trigger various types of pigmentation that are tough to reverse without professional care.
How Sun Exposure Triggers Pigmentation
When your skin is exposed to UV rays, it reacts by producing more melanin as a defense mechanism. While this is your body’s way of shielding deeper skin layers, excessive melanin production leads to dark patches, uneven skin tone, and stubborn spots that linger for years.
This reaction doesn’t happen overnight. It builds over time—through repeated sunburns, daily commutes without sunscreen, and even brief exposure while indoors near windows.
Types of Pigmentation Caused by the Sun
Let’s break down the most common types of pigmentation linked to sun damage:
Sunspots (Solar Lentigines): Also known as age spots or liver spots, these are flat, brown patches that usually appear on areas frequently exposed to the sun—like the face, hands, and shoulders.
Melasma: While melasma can be hormone-triggered, UV exposure worsens it. It’s often seen as symmetrical brown or gray patches, especially on the cheeks, forehead, and upper lip.

Freckles (Ephelides): Freckles may seem harmless and cute, but they’re a sign your skin is overproducing melanin. They usually darken with more sun exposure.
Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH): Though often caused by acne or injury, sun exposure can deepen the appearance of these marks, making them harder to fade.
Prevention and Treatment
The best way to deal with types of pigmentation is prevention—wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen daily, avoiding peak sun hours, and using antioxidant-rich skincare. But if pigmentation has already set in, targeted treatments like Vitamin C, niacinamide, and dermatologist-recommended peels can help fade them.
If you're struggling with stubborn spots or curious about the types of pigmentation on face, know that you’re not alone—and you’re not without solutions.
At Dermis, we believe in empowering you with expert-backed skincare and real results. Whether you’re looking for prevention or repair, our curated treatments are designed to restore your skin’s natural clarity and confidence.
Trust Dermis — because your skin deserves the best of care.

i won't lie to you all, i'm still kind of obsessed with what chris nolan said at the oscars about how films have only been around for ~100 years, how they are still a very new art form, and how we have so much left to do and explore with them. imagine being in only the 1st century of painting, or writing, or sculpture. that's where we are with movies, and that blows my mind a little bit, to be quite honest.
#movies are still new#and i think if everyone remembered that a little more often#we'd be a lot more embracing of all types of movies.#like we created a wholw new art form and its only been around for a *fraction* of the time as anything else#idk why im so sentimental about this on this thursday eve#but like !! we are making and talking about the first movies still !!#in 500 years or 1000 years people will still be making movies and itll be so different#but theyll still be telling stories through a medium we were there for the 1st century of yknow 🥹🥹#like imagine early humans seeing the paintings made 1000 years later#or 10000 years later !! and seeing how we still put pigment to a canvas#sorry please ignore all of this

I've reblogged two Douyins that were also mirrored and reposted on TikTok without attribution (one by explore.china6 too!), so I'm just going to use those posts as templates. Looking up "群青颜料" on Douyin (the suggested search gave me the last two characters) yields as the top result the below video posted by 彭南科 at 2024-01-15 05:00 (Beijing time, I presume):

Common Types of Pigmentation Disorders

Common types of pigmentation disorders include hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation, which affect the skin's color due to an imbalance in melanin production. Hyperpigmentation occurs when excess melanin is produced, leading to darker spots or patches. The causes of hyperpigmentation vary and include sun exposure, hormonal changes (like pregnancy or birth control), and certain medications.
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is a type of hyperpigmentation that occurs after an injury, acne, or inflammation heals, leaving behind dark spots. It is more common in individuals with darker skin tones. Another common type of pigmentation disorder is vitiligo, where skin loses its pigment due to immune system dysfunction. Effective treatment for pigmentation disorders depends on the type and cause, and products like those offered by Dermis Oracle can help manage and reduce the appearance of these skin conditions.

Microneedling Side Effects on Darker Skin Tones and Hyperpigmentation
For individuals with darker skin tones, every new skincare treatment comes with hesitation—and often, a long history of being underserved or misinformed. Microneedling promises glowing, even-toned skin, but if you have melanin-rich skin, you’ve probably asked: Will it really help? Or will it leave me with even more hyperpigmentation? In 2025, the conversation around microneedling for darker skin has evolved, but the emotional weight behind that question still matters. This isn’t just about improving skin—it’s about rebuilding trust in a treatment space that hasn’t always been inclusive.
Why Skin Tone Matters in Microneedling
Melanin-rich skin (Fitzpatrick types IV–VI) reacts differently to trauma. Even minor inflammation can trigger an overproduction of pigment, leading to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). Since microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries, the concern is valid. Without proper technique, equipment, and aftercare, this treatment can unintentionally darken patches of skin or trigger uneven tone—especially in those with a history of pigment instability.
In 2025, new technologies, protocols, and provider education are changing this. Microneedling is not only safer but more effective for darker skin—when done right.
Science Behind Pigment Reactions
Hyperpigmentation occurs when melanocytes (pigment-producing cells) respond to skin trauma by sending melanin to the injury site. In lighter skin tones, this often fades quickly. In darker skin, it lingers—and can become darker than the surrounding skin if not treated.
Microneedling, when properly performed, creates vertical microchannels rather than tears, which significantly lowers trauma levels. Devices with adjustable depths allow practitioners to avoid overtreatment, especially in sensitive areas like the cheeks or jawline. Pairing microneedling with anti-inflammatory or pigment-regulating serums can also reduce risk.
Best Practices for Darker Skin in 2025
AI-Powered Pre-Treatment Scans Before starting, clinics use high-resolution AI imaging to assess melanin density, inflammation markers, and sensitivity. This helps develop personalized protocols with safer needle depths and fewer passes.
Depth Control and Pressure Sensitivity Darker skin types are best treated with needles ranging from 0.3 to 1.0 mm. Devices in 2025 are equipped with servo motors that ensure precision and consistency—avoiding manual overpressure that leads to pigment trauma.
Post-Treatment Cooling and Barrier Repair Post-procedure serums often include tranexamic acid, niacinamide, or peptides to calm inflammation and regulate pigment response. Clinics avoid any actives like acids or retinoids during the first 72 hours to protect melanocyte behavior.
Session Spacing Longer intervals between sessions—every 6 weeks instead of 4—give melanin-rich skin adequate time to heal and rebalance pigment distribution.
Emotional Sensitivity and Representation
A growing number of clinics now emphasize trauma-informed care, especially for BIPOC clients. This includes longer consults, inclusive before-and-after photos, and transparent conversations about pigment risk. Because microneedling isn’t just a medical procedure—it’s a trust exercise.
The shame that sometimes accompanies pigmentation struggles—especially for clients who’ve tried everything without results—deserves acknowledgement. Providers trained in cultural competence help bridge that emotional gap, making the journey feel safe and empowering.
What to Expect in a 2025 Appointment
Initial Imaging: AI skin scans assess pigment concentration, vascular sensitivity, and healing history. Customized Plan: Providers map out a zone-based strategy, adjusting depth and serum choice for each area. Treatment Session: A gentle, controlled microneedling session using low-to-mid depth settings ensures minimal trauma. Recovery Guidance: You’ll receive a customized aftercare protocol designed to support melanocyte stability and reduce PIH risk. Progress Tracking: Clinics offer monthly check-ins with photos to monitor pigmentation changes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is microneedling safe for dark skin in 2025? Yes—when performed with adjustable-depth, high-precision devices and pigment-safe serums. It’s safer now than ever before.
Can microneedling fix hyperpigmentation? It can help fade old pigment and even skin tone, especially when combined with brightening serums. But improper technique can worsen PIH, so professional care is essential.
How many sessions are needed for visible results? Most clients see tone improvement after 3–4 sessions, spaced 5–6 weeks apart. Maintenance sessions may be needed based on skin condition and goals.
What should I avoid after treatment? Sun exposure, exfoliants, and harsh actives should be avoided for at least 5 days post-treatment. Always follow your provider’s specific plan.
Conclusion
Microneedling in 2025 is no longer a high-risk treatment for darker skin—it’s a refined, evidence-based option that empowers melanin-rich clients with safety and results. When personalized and delivered with care, this treatment can restore not only your complexion, but your confidence. And in a world that hasn’t always made space for your skin, that kind of progress means everything.

Being a person really into stationery is unfortunate because I will have to acknowledge that Zhang Beihai would realistically probably just use a mechanical pencil that works rather than a specific kind. I usually draw him with a regular wooden one for recognizability, but he'd definitely be a mechanical pencil type.
#transmission from the captain#(i have been debating with myself over this since. stationery is a big interest of mine and honestly yeah he'd just use a pencil)#(he has better things to worry about than. a pencil. as long as it writes then it is fine)#(though i do think about the conversations about handwriting notes more than i should)#(however hear me out on him with nice utilitarian type metal pencils that are meant to last like the rotring 600)#(ough thinking about how graphite is a form of carbon and that would be a really interesting conversation with carbon-based life as whole)#(then graphite isn't a pigment like with inks so it lasts rather than fading like how inks do over time [especially with sun exposure])#(i really want to explore that because. special interest. and also one of my current big interests)#(i'm really into fountain pens but it's okay i can admit that one of my favorites would be a ballpoint user [i say this lightheartedly])#(actually. idea for later. definitely something to think about for a future project)

I'm finally actually reading this book and unfortunately I do not like it. It's not very well written, and the late Estelle Peel Izor is coming across as a judgemental asshole.

(From Costume Design and Home Planning, 1916.) I sent this picture to several friends and they all had different favourite aprons, so I'm curious! Mine's 3.
Edit: All 6 of them have pockets! In varying sizes and shapes, but all are very pockety!
#20th century#1910's#aprons#books#She hates evenly spaced stripes (monotonous!) and lace with shading (a VIOLATION!)#and thinks students should not be made to paint colour wheels because the unnaturally bright pigments could be a bad influence#and they might grow up to wear ugly and CRUDE colours#and of course there's a lot of talk about body 'defects' and how everyone should aim to look 'normal' sized#but that's less surprising in this type of book than the other things she's negative about

I'm so glad I'm not on Tiktok because I came upon a YT short from an American influencer that was "this [nationality] makeup is viral in [country]!" and I was like, since when? And I looked up the brand and it was literally not even a brand based in said country. It was made by someone in the US who belongs to the diaspora so technically it counts as an "Asian" brand, but damn... Don't trust those "viral in Korea/China/Japan!" claims. That could mean like... your Chinese-American cousin made a video about the product that got 10k views.
#something something orientalism by edward said#personal#the type of product would never be viral among the populace because bullet lipsticks haven't been on trend in that country for years#it's not as portable it's old-fashioned it requires regular touch up and is too pigmented in a culture that likes to be understated#I can imagine its just one of these after the other in that app where you aren't required to disclose ads

Pigmentation Treatment That Works: Restore Your Natural Glow
Do you ever find yourself staring back at your reflection, seeing those dark spots and uneven patches on your skin? Not at all flattering right? They weren’t there before, and now, they seem to leave you alone. What to do? Well, there’s a simple answer to that, get an effective pigmentation treatment in Noida and get your glowing skin back with a touch of refreshment to it. Skin pigmentation issues, such as dark spots, melasma, and sun spots, are actually quite common and can be caused by hormonal changes, sun exposure, or age.

However, with the right treatment, you can get your beautiful skin back along with its natural glow. This blog will walk you through the causes of pigmentation and the best treatments available to help you achieve flawless skin.
Understanding Pigmentation — What’s Really Causing Them?
Before we go ahead and jump into learning about the treatments, it’s essential that we first understand what causes pigmentation changes in the first place. Skin pigmentation can happen when the skin produces too much melanin, a component liable for your skin colour. Here are the most common types of pigmentation:
Melasma: This is quite common and caused by hormonal changes, such as during pregnancy. You can see brown or grayish patches appear on the skin, especially on the face. It can also be triggered by taking birth control pills or hormone therapy.
Sunspots: As the name suggests, these are caused by prolonged exposure to UV rays from the sun. The sun’s UV rays can damage your skin, leading to brown and tan spots on the skin.
Freckles: Small, flat brown marks that appear on fair skin, also triggered after sun exposure. The sun triggers an increase in melanin, which can cause more freckles. They are not really harmful to the skin but can cause harm to your confidence.
Aging Spots: These are usually developed as you age and are called liver spots or age spots. They are dark marks that appear with increasing age.
They don’t just cause cosmetic issues but also have an impact on your self-esteem. So, it is always better to get a suitable treatment and stop before the condition worsens.
Pigmentation Treatment Options That Work
Now, that we are talking about pigmentation treatment, you have several options available for you. The best treatment depends on the type of pigmentation and the severity of the issue. Here are the most effective treatments:
Laser Treatment
The most popular and effective treatment for pigmentation is laser therapy. Under this treatment, the expert uses a laser to break down the pigment in the skin. The body then naturally removes the broken-down pigment.
Chemical Peels

Chemical peels involve applying a solution to the skin that exfoliates the outer layer, removing dead skin cells and giving you fresh new skin underneath. It helps lighten pigmentation by promoting skin rejuvenation and reducing the appearance of dark spots.
Vampire Facials

Now this one is the most popular among other pigmentation treatments, as it uses your own blood and its special properties (PRP) to treat the condition. This offers a more natural and effective solution for pigmentation. Also, along with this, vampire facials are a good anti-aging treatment.
Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a method that gently exfoliates the top layer of skin to help reduce the pigmentation in your skin. In this procedure, the expert uses a device to spray tiny crystals onto the skin, and then exfoliate the surface. In the end, you are left with a smoother and even skin tone.
Now, you can only know which treatment is ideal for your skin with a detailed consultation with an expert dermatologist. A skin specialist will carefully assess your skin condition and suggest more appropriate treatments, suitable for your specific skin requirements.
