Intrigued - Khan
Request: I would absolutely love it if you wrote some sort of Khan x reader (I squealed when I saw you write for him)?? Maybe something where he is super intrigued by the reader, but she's really not having any of it?
Notes: Literally squealed when i saw someone finally requested a Khan story!!
Please don’t plagiarize my work - I spend a lot of my time writing, copying and pasting destroys that. If you want to repost my work. please ask first - but even then I might say no.
ALL MASTERLIST’S Requests are OPEN!
You’d be lying if you said his stare wasn’t distracting. It was, but not in the way you believed he meant it to be. You’re not even sure why you’re there, standing before the prisoner. Sure, you were a close friend of McCoy’s and not to mention Kirk, but you were just a nurse on the U.S.S. Enterpise. Nothing more.
Yet, for some reason Captain Kirk had given you the job of watching over the new prisoner. Apparently, Kirk didn’t trust to leave the prisoner alone and he trusted you to watch over him, so here you were.
You returned the prisoner’s haunting stare, glaring at him. Khan was his name, a man that had murdered numerous people and Pike. You imagined that’s why Kirk had such a strong vendetta against the man, and if you were being honest, you agreed. You were never close with Pike, as you weren’t that high up in the ranks, but from every short conversation you’d held with the man, he was unbelievably kind.
But, you would be lying if you didn’t say that Khan was, unfortunately, attractive.
Crossing your arms over your chest, you shifted your weight onto the other foot and for some reason, that gave Khan the prompt to finally speak. It had already been a few hours since you’d started your watch, and it had been nothing but gruelling silence.
You watched with narrowed eyes as Khan stood up from the uncomfortable bed that was placed in every prisoner’s cell and made his way over to the glass. It suddenly seemed like the prisoner was much closer than he had been back in the corner of the room, and you moved to take a step back, uncomfortable but Khan’s voice interrupted you. “There’s no need to be afraid.”
You paused in place at the sound of his voice. It was undeniably low, and it sent shivers down your spine, but not in any other way but fear. The man had, after all, killed numerous people all for a sake you didn’t know.
“I’m not afraid,” you finally responded, turning back to Khan. Glaring at him, you held your chin high, narrowing your eyes. “I merely don’t like the thought of being so close to someone so disgusting.”
Khan only smiled at your words. “I see you’ve been informed.”
“I don’t need to be informed of anything,” you spat. “I heard, everyone heard, about what you did.”
“You clearly do,” Khan dismissed. “You have no idea why I did what I did.”
“And I don’t need to,” you hissed. “You’re a murderer, that’s all I need to now.”
Khan took another step towards the glass, so he was practically pressed up against it and smiled. “Come here,” he ordered, signalling you with his eyes. You hesitated, looking skeptic of his words. Khan grinned, “if you aren’t afraid like you say you are, then, you should have problem coming here.”
“I don’t need to prove myself to you,” you huffed.
“Amuse me,” he whispered.
You swallowed the lump in your throat, reluctantly obliging and taking a step forward. You continued walking until you were just as close to the glass as Khan was, and you watched with wary eyes as he raised his hand, placing it on the glass. You raised your own hand, and you’re not sure why, but set your hand where he had. The only thing blocking your hands from touching was the glass.
“You intrigue me, Y/N.”
Your eyes widened; “how do you kno-”
“The Captain said it when you walked in.” Khan explained, calming your nerves. “I merely was just listening.”
You shook your head to clear your thoughts and moving your hand, “well you don’t intrigue me. You are our prisoner, nothing more.”
Khan grinned but otherwise nodded. “Whatever you say Y/N, I will enjoy our short lived time together.”

Designing the U.S.S. Tempest

From the moment when I began playing Star Trek Online, I knew that my endgame ship would be an Akira-class starship. The Akira-class was always one of my favorite designs from the moment I saw one deliver its torpedo barrage onscreen in Star Trek: First Contact. Now, STO allows you to customize the look of most ships by mixing and matching components from certain classes. Although I hadn’t planned on using a design other than the standard Akira-class, I played around with the feature just for kicks. I came across a combination that still kept the basic aesthetic of the Akira-class but had a rugged appearance more suited to a warship. In other words, I pretty stumbled on the look of the Tempest, but now I can’t imagine the ship looking like anything else.

Once I settled on the design, I thought about giving it a backstory, if only for my own head canon reasons. Why would Starfleet roll out a starship cobbled from several classes in 2409? We saw in Star Trek: Deep Space 9 that Starfleet sometimes combines certain starship elements when pressed. Inspiration struck! Why couldn’t the Tempest be another such design? Deep Space 9 showed several Akira-class ships lost in battles with the Dominion, and the Tempest was salvaged from one of these ships. Although it was meant to return to battle, the Dominion War ended before its construction finished. It sat in mothballs (figuratively speaking) at a shipyard until it was called upon in 2409.

In repurposing Akira-class ship parts, priority would’ve been given to salvaging the saucer section--which contains the ship’s hangar bay--and the distinctive weapons pod--which holds the ship’s primary torpedo arsenal--so those are the elements that remain prominently on the Tempest. The secondary hull and nacelles were spare parts lying around the shipyard that Starfleet engineers used to complete the makeshift vessel, which is why they are more generic looking. The nacelles in particular look like they could’ve come from a Nova-class starship.

With a backstory like that, the Tempest isn’t exactly a top of the line ship. That suited the story I wanted to tell. I didn’t want a top of the line ship. I wanted a ship that was rough around the edges. Having a flawless ship is like having a flawless character. It makes for a boring narrative. I wanted situations where the crew had to use their wits and knowledge about the unique strengths (and weaknesses) of their ship.

I also took some considerations as if my ship was the star of its own series, which of course in my mind, it is! A hero ship needs to look distinct because viewers need to be able to pick it out quickly when it’s alongside other ships. Also, the ship should be distinct from other hero ships in the same way that those hero ships are easily distinguishable from each other. For example, Voyager doesn’t look anything like the Enterpise-D or -E despite being starships of the same era. And, of course, the Defiant doesn’t look like any of them which for me that’s part of its charm.

At the same time, as other Star Trek designers will say, the ship needs to look like a Star Trek ship with the now iconic saucer and nacelles arrangement. I feel like my chosen ship design does all that. It looks like a Federation starship, but it won’t be confused with the Enterprise (or Voyager or the Defiant) any time soon.
And so...that’s the story of how the U.S.S. Tempest came to be!
