Now that quite a few beekeepers are starting to switch to small cell bee system, it is very important to guide them well. In order to do that, however, the one who is being consulted must have as much relevant data as possible for the individual hives. Especially from the beginning on in order to be able to understand the development of problems when they emerge. For this we need a kind of hive notes, but above all the especially important data listed in relation to small cell bees. Personally, I record everything in a laptop, a Toughbook, that is always with me at the bee yards. i appreciate the overall message of this post and in general it's good advice for people interested in emulation! there ARE a lot of platforms where the most functional/popular emulator for it hasn't been updated in 15 years, and it's also pretty common to keep using the emulator you downloaded years ago if you kept the same computer/files and it doesn't have some kind of update checker built-in.

but like. project64 is not really a good example of that? it IS still actively being updated and maintained and the current 3.0 version is excellent. literally just go update your shit! it's free! what are you doing!! the website doesn't even LET you download versions older than v2.3; you'd presumably have to go digging through some old forums or obscure githubs to find the now-unsupported builds that have these security issues if you didn't already have them downloaded. v2.0 was released in 2013, who the hell is going around still using a version of the program from over a decade ago unless they have incredibly specific technical needs?

PJ64 v3.0 not only runs way better than previous versions and has more configuration options, but it's ALSO hardware-accurate enough that you're allowed to use it for some speedrunning/racing events now (it's frequently listed as a separate entity from pre-3.0 builds because of how much of a difference it makes). it fixes the weird pause lag that older versions had in OoT, and gives you options to remove common visual glitches in a bunch of popular platformers. it can even run DK64 and Paper Mario properly!! that's huge!! those both used to be notoriously difficult games to emulate!

the one other thing i'll mention is that a lot of emulators that have been around for like 20 years are also open-source! which means that sure, something like VBA might've stopped getting updated in 2004, but others have picked up the slack since then and you can instead use VBA-M, a fork that is still getting updates and works way better. same goes for DS and SNES emulators - my personal recommendations for those are MelonDS and Mesen-S, respectively, but my point is that you've pretty much always got alternatives besides shitty broken apps that have been dead since 2007. do some research! ask around! ask your friend who keeps talking about hacking their 3DS, i bet they know stuff.

but yeah tl;dr just make a habit of checking periodically if the emulators you downloaded a while ago have received updates or improved forks, don't keep using outdated software and assuming it's fine just because it still runs. there IS usually a better option out there

Altered Emerald is my labour of love - a somewhat-popular mod of the original Emerald game, for GBA.

I've been tinkering with it since June 2013, and just recently I wrapped up with one last patch. It's a nostalgia trip through Pokémon Emerald, with access to all 386 mons (and their gen 4 evos) alongside all the moves and abilities up to gen 6 and 7!

I've also updated the routes, and added about ten more (with a massive island accessible from route 109). Also Nature Power works in place of all HMs, there's an EV checker, a nature swapper, contests, an ability that makes the type chart invert, and more.

I am a massive nerd about this game. It's free, and you can get the .ips file here: Altered Emerald 4.2.

The download contains an .ips file. You can make an Altered Emerald using Lunar IPS, clicking "Apply IPS Patch", and applying the IPS file to a clean Emerald rom. You can play that patched rom with VBA-M.

Remember to obtain this Rom legally, and not through an illegal download like the one at emulatorgames.

If Tsiskaridze moved back to Bolshoi as AD, who do you think would replace him at Vaganova? Lopatkina seems like a good choice. I know that Altynai is settled in at Astana now, but I’d like to see the position at least offered back to her, and give her the choice to take it or leave it. She deserved more respect than the way she was sent packing. That’s not Tsiskaridze’s fault though. And do you think Nikolai would have to again face the slander from moving cities if he went back to Moscow? 

Personally, I get the feeling Nikolai would feel more at home at Moscow. He is an insider on all those politics, whereas I get the feeling that either he doesn’t have much influence in SPB, or it is all too tame for him. Perhaps this is why he favors Elya- she seems to have more character and personality on stage than the average Vaganova grad, more Bolshoi type.

Tsiskaridze will have a lot of say in hiring his replacement. I think Lopatkina is actually unlikely to take the position. She seems to have left ballet world behind. Personally, I think that she would make a better teacher than she would a manager anyway. It takes a particular type of person to run a place like VBA. Farukh Ruzimatov’s name has come up a number of times, but it’s all speculation at this stage. I’d actually love to see him take over from Tsiskaridze when the latter is ready to leave.

Altynai wasn’t sent packing. Tsiskaridze asked her to remain at the Academy and the teaching staff also wanted her to stay on. She chose to leave. Of course, it depends on who you believe, as there are many narratives surrounding the “coup” of 2013.

When Tsiskaridze took over VBA he was seen as an outsider – that was one of the biggest issues. He won’t face criticism for coming home. He’ll probably get sh*t for something else though.

I don’t know how he really feels about SPB, but I do know that Moscow and the Bolshoi are his actual home and I’m sure he’ll be happy to be back. I honestly think that the Bolshoi is the one great love of his life.

I’m just imagining Nikolai scrolling through this blog and reading everything we’ve said about him and ballet drama 😂 But yeah on the topic of Elya, I’ve always thought it’s a bit weird and creepy being so..outspoken? about how much he loves Denis and Elya being together, posting tons of photos of them consecutively, especially photos of them kissing (granted it’s a mag shoot but still). I know he sees them as his children but always thought it’s weird being so public lol.

I doubt he'd bother to do it and I’m not sure how good his English is. I think it’s more likely that someone from his squad would read this blog and report back to him (I don’t think this actually happens though). I also don’t think I’ve ever shared anything particularly dramatic, so we’re good.

He really does love Elya and Denis two. He’s always loved them both individually and he’s very proud that he was the one who introduced them. He also hated Rodkin’s ex and was elated when the two broke up. This is actually the bit I find problematic. Regardless of how he feels about the girl, putting her down and calling her names on national television (yes, he really did that) is not ok. I don’t think he has anyone around him who can call him out on this type of behaviour. 

In terms of how publicly adoring he is of his students and other people he likes... I know it can come off as weird but now that I have some experience talking with him directly I can say this: Tsiskaridze is a very genuine person. He is very open and honest about his feelings. When he loves someone, he’s going to shout it from the rooftops*. If he has an opinion, no matter how unpopular, he’s going to share it. His bluntness can be jarring, but I do appreciate how honest he is. 

*Unless it’s a relationship. He’s intensely private about his relationships.

Die Power Add-ins von Excel 365

 Seit dem Umstieg auf Excel 365 habe ich immer mehr die Ahnung, dass Microsoft zuerst zugekaufte Apps oder eigene Tools an uns Anwendern zuerst im Add-in verpackt. Wenn dann bis zur nächsten Version entsprechende Anwenderfeedbacks positiv sind, wird das Add-in dann erst ins Programm integriert.

Eine solche Erfolgsgeschichte ist Power Pivot. Und eine Degradierung von Power View als bloßes Kartendiagramm (Map Chart) ist die andere Konsequenz.

 Was kann das Add-In Inquire?

Inquire als Add-in lässt sich nach wie vor nützen, wenn es einfach um das Herausfinden von Beziehungen zwischen verknüpften Tabellen in unterschiedlichen Dateien geht. Dieses Register erinnert mich sehr an das Beziehungsfenster und seine Funktionen in MS Access Datenbanken und vielleicht haben sich schon sehr viele Excel Datenmodellierer schon sehr lange bei Microsoft darüber beschwert, dass es keine vergleichbare Synopse von Beziehungen zwischen Datenspeichern auch in Excel gab. So können wir jetzt auch in Excel komplexe Beziehungsgeflechte zwischen Mappen, Tabellen und Zellen „untersuchen“.

Was ist der Data Streamer?

Im September war ich wieder mal zu Gast bei einem namhaften Nürnberger Bleistifthersteller und wir – 12 Mitarbeiter und meine Wenigkeit - hatten miteinander ein Seminar zum Automatisieren großer Datenmengen mit Excel 2016.

Einige der Teilnehmer im Zuge der firmeneigenen Migration auf Office 365 bereits Excel 365 auf ihren Notebooks im Einsatz.

Während der Mittagspause unterhielten wir uns über die Vor- und Nachteile der Umstellung auf Office 365. Eine Teilnehmerin sagte, sie bräuchte unbedingt immer ihre alten analogen Messgeräte, weil die Neuen nicht die gewünschte Genauigkeit brächten. 

Tatsache ist, dass analoges Messen und Auswerten von Daten ohne Mikrokontroller (kleine Geräte, die wie Anschlussübersetzer mit USB die Daten weitergeben können) in deutschen Unternehmen wie meinem Stiftefabrikant noch allgegenwärtig ist.

Der Data Streamer für Excel ist seit April 2019 im Einsatz und liefert in Echtzeit einzelne Dateninformationen über Messgeräte mit Microcontroller, z.B. Informationen von Herzpatienten, deren Daten nicht mehr umständlich in Dokumentmappen eingetippt werden, sondern deren EKG Messungen sofort beim Laufen auf dem Trainingsrad in Excel eingelesen, gespeichert und bei Bedarf jederzeit auch an andere Stellen weiter gestreamt werden kann. Zusätzlich werden auch Datum und Uhrzeit sowie Ort, Datenverarbeiter und weitere Metadaten zu diesen Messdatensätzen automatisch gespeichert, was allen Beteiligten sehr viel Zeit, Geld und Speicherplatz spart.

Mit einer neuen Programmversion von Offce Anwendungen kommen neue Tools zum Einsatz, wissen wir. Mit jeder neuen Add-in-Änderung verändert sich natürlich auch die Art, wie ich an ein lieb gewonnenes Tool herankomme und wo es sich grade befindet. Neuestes Beispiel:

Seit einiger Zeit hatte ich das PowerPivot Add-in in Excel nicht mehr benutzt. Zuerst war es zwar noch mit dem alten Add-In Pfad in meinen lokalen Dateien gelistet, aber der Pfad verlief bei meiner heutigen Aktivierung in Excel 365 ins Leere. Das gewohnte Power Pivot Register ließ sich im Menüband partout nicht mehr blicken.

Bisheriger Pfad war seit den Office 2010: C:\Users\info\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\AddIns

Das Power Pivot Add-in von Excel 2016 funktioniert nicht mehr

Hilfe! Das hab ich doch schon immer so gemacht. Zeit, was Neues zu lernen, bzw. die veränderten Startpunkte für die Powertools ausfindig zu machen.

Meine bisherige Vorgehensweise zum Aktivieren von Power Pivot in Excel war so:

1.      Excel 365 öffnen.

2.      Datei – Optionen – Add-ins

3.      Kombinationsfeld unter der Liste der Add-ins – COM-Add-ins … anklicken

4.      Haken setzen bei „Power Pivot Add-in für Excel“

5.      Über den Button „Hinzufügen…“ kann man den Add-in Pfad zwar noch sehen, aber er ist jetzt leer. Also ist jetzt klar, dass es dieses Add-in nicht mehr gibt und auch nicht mehr als Register aktiv angesteuert wird.

6.      Wenn ich nochmal mir das Add-in-Fenster anschaue, sehe ich, dass mein Haken wie von Zauberhand wieder deaktiviert wurde. Und nach dem 2. Oder 3. Mal Haken setzen wird auch Power Pivot als deaktiviertes Add-In im Fenster darunter auch nicht mehr angezeigt. Was tun?

Das Rätsels Lösung: Power Pivot Button im Register Daten.

Was kann denn Power Query?

Power Query, vormals ein Add-In wie Power View, Power Map und Power Pivot, ist seit Mitte 2019 im Register „Daten“ für alles zuständig, was mit Im- und Export sowie mit einfachen Datenkonsolidierungen und Datenverknüpfungen mit Datenformatierung und Konvertierung in die aktive Excelmappe zu tun hat.

Wozu brauche ich Power Pivot?

Manche könnten gleich an komplexe Formatierungsaufgaben, Spezialfilter oder umfangreiche Ampelformatierungen mit VBA denken.

VBA kann zwar noch lokal als xlsm-Datei mit einer XML Makro Struktur arbeiten, braucht aber eben XML als Arbeitssprache, was auf einer Cloud nicht mehr ausführbar ist. Es braucht also jenseits von Prozeduren in VBA neue Tools wie Power Pivot und alle anderen Power Tools, die eine Massendatenverarbeitung mit sehr viel größerer Effizienz garantieren, weil sie nicht mehr lokal laufen, sondern in der Cloud stehen und überall mit der richtigen Berechtigung verfügbar sind. Kürzere Wege, schnellere Verarbeitung, Kontrolle über das, was aktuell ansteht.

Wenn es ohne VBA um komplexe Datenarbeiten geht, dann ist Power Pivot das performantere Werkzeug.

Dazu zählen u.a. folgende Aufgaben:

·        Datentabellen, die über die Millionen Zeilen Kapazität gehen sollen

·        Aufgaben mit komplexer Automatisierung von Import, Formatierung & Berechnungen (Measures). Während meistens der Import und die Formatierung schon mit Power Query erledigt werden und dann als Datenmodell gespeichert werden kann, sind die Measures tatsächlich einer der wichtigsten Tools von Power Pivot und deshalb je nach Abo Umfang in Excel 365 enthalten oder nicht.

·        Das Schaffen und Steuern von Beziehungen zwischen sehr vielen und unterschiedlichen Datentabellen in sogenannten „Datenmodellen“. Alle von uns, die schon jemals ein ER Modell in MS Access erstellt und durchdacht haben, um daraufhin eine Datenbank aufzubauen, werden es lieben.

·        Im Projektmanagement brauchen wir für die schnelle Visualisierung von Statusangaben in den jeweiligen Phasen sogenannte Key Performance Indicators, z.B. in Form von Ampeln. Mit den Measures im Power Pivot lassen sich viel einfacher und performanter die Ampeln erzeugen und schneller weiterverarbeiten, z.B. in Präsentationen mit PowerPoint oder Sway.

Und wenn dann irgendwann auch da die Performance und Aussagekraft der gewonnenen Excel Ergebnisse über ihre Grenzen hinaus geht, ist es wohl Zeit, sich mit dem Power BI Portal und dem Common Data Service, alles unter dem Dach von Azure in Office 365 zu befassen.

I only really started following VBA in late 2013, so I’m not overly familiar with previous graduating classes, I’m afraid. Class of 2015 was the first group of graduates whose progress I followed and was seriously invested in.

Liza is wonderful and I’m really glad to see that she’s performing Princess Masha this year. I’m sure there are other Georgian students at VBA as well, but Liza is the only one in the spotlight, as far as I’m aware.

If the performance is part of VBA’a professional practice program then no, I don’t think they do.

I was wondering how it works for the students that join the academy in later years instead of first. How are their auditions different? Or do they join when a teacher discovers their potential somewhere else? What do you know about the process? How are they integrated in the system?

I think the process depends on a number of factors: what grade / level the student is wanting to join; what academy they are transferring from; how many vacancies there are at VBA at the time of the transfer; whether the student holds a Russian citizenship or not; how well the student performed at their previous academy; whether they are a paid student or are trying to get a government-subsidized spot, etc.

From my conversations with VBA foreign trainees, it appears that VBA make no special effort to integrate outsiders into their system. Ultimately, if you join VBA you are expected to keep up and survive as best you can. There’s no special treatment. I believe this would be the case for any student, international or local.  

In terms of the admissions process, this also varies. From memory, I believe that taking a class with VBA students is part of the process. The teacher judges how well the candidate performs in comparison to VBA “natives”.  If the student is local, then they also have to submit their academic record (and a whole bunch of other documents) from their previous academy and go through an interview process.

In terms of getting an offer to join the academy from a teacher… I believe that Tsiskaridze has made quite a few of these offers in the past. I think that any teacher can recommend that a student attempts to audition for / transfer to VBA but, ultimately, the latter still has to pass the audition, etc.

VBA also have some sort of deal with Japan. They run annual summer workshops there and take five to seven Japanese students in every academic year.
