The story is called "Quiet as It's Kept."

I first learned about Tasheka Arceneaux-Sutton way back in 2015 when I interviewed Silas Munro. Since then, Tasheka has gone on to become one of the leading voices behind discovering Black people omitted from the graphic design history canon. Even design legend Dr. Cheryl D. Miller has sung her praises, so I knew I had to sit down with Tasheka and learn more about her remarkable journey.
Tasheka spoke to me about her experience as an educator and researcher, including an examination of her teaching philosophy. She also talked about growing up in New Orleans, her shift into design, working for the Navy Reservists, and even starting her own studio, Blacvoice Design. Lastly, she discussed her upcoming book Black Design in America, and shared how the different aspects of her work keep her motivated and inspired.
If there’s any lesson you learn from Tasheka, it should be this one: you have control over your own path as a designer, so work hard and you can make your dreams come true!

I'm visiting Vermont College of Fine Arts this weekend, and the college bookstore uses a converted card catalog to hold their small items for sale. I think this is officially my favorite use for an old card catalog.
[Image description: an old card catalog with each drawer labeled for things like, "Ballpoint pens," "Power bank," etc.]

Visual bibliography for my VCFA critical thesis that is NOW DONE!!!
Thank you to all of the amazing people who helped! In no particular order: Parnassus Books, Rae Ann Parker, Julie Danielson, Ashley Herring Blake, Jason Tucker, Brett Smock, Cory McCarthy, everyone at VCFA, and all of the amazing experts and authors whose work is pictured above for all of their amazingness!*
My thesis is called “Strike a Chord: How Original Lyrics in Children’s Literature Enhance Connection.” It truly pulls the music and literature sides of my life together in a way I’ve always known but never spent five thousand years researching and writing. Is that right? WHAT IS TIME???
*I have a terrible brain that’s so much worse now that we’re in a pandemic, so I’m SO INCREDIBLY SORRY if I forgot anyone!** THANK YOU, from the depths of my brain that you slipped through! I will likely remember you tomorrow.
**Pandemic theses should get extra points, I think :)

It’s my first day at VCFA WCYA and I asked this guy what he’s reading and it turns out he’s got the brand-new paperback of NOBODY KNOWS BUT YOU, which just came out today. I said, “Oh, I wrote that!” but he insisted on explaining it’s a YA thriller about an intense friendship formed over a single summer at camp—a summer cut short by murder. He said the story is told in letters written by one friend to the other—letters that she never sends—interspersed with news clips, text messages, a trial transcript, and statements and social media posts. He said it’s pretty good and much cheaper now that it’s in paperback and I really should check it out if I like twist and turns and psychological suspense
Tumblr media
I told him that sounds cool I’ll tell my friends to look for it in paperback, hardcover, or ebook. He said tell them the audiobook version is great too
Tumblr media
Anyway, it’s always nice to meet a fan 💙🔪
