Alright, I'm joining the research team side of tumblr and going through every element of the website / new information. A lot of what's here has been posted by others, so this is more of a compilation of things and me thinking out loud.

The Code - D O U O S V A V V M

The Shugborough Inscription is a sequence of letters – O U O S V A V V, between the letters D M on a lower plane – carved on the 18th-century Shepherd's Monument in the grounds of Shugborough Hall in Staffordshire, England, below a mirror image of Nicolas Poussin's painting the Shepherds of Arcadia (...) [about the relief] On the tomb is carved the Latin text Et in arcadia ego ("I am also in Arcadia" or "I am, even in Arcadia") The letters on the second line, D M, were commonly used on Roman tombs to stand for Dis Manibus, meaning "dedicated to the shades". I'm not gonna go into much detail about the whole Holy Grail thing, bevause you've all probably read this article by now. I do wanna point point out the obvious Arcadia = Eden connection:

Arcadia (Greek: Αρκαδία) refers to a vision of pastoralism and harmony with nature. The term is derived from the Greek province of the same name which dates to antiquity; the province's mountainous topography and sparse population of pastoralists later caused the word Arcadia to develop into a poetic byword for an idyllic vision of unspoiled wilderness. Arcadia is a poetic term associated with bountiful natural splendor and harmony. The 'Garden' is often inhabited by shepherds. The concept also figures in Renaissance mythology. Although commonly thought of as being in line with Utopian ideals, Arcadia differs from that tradition in that it is more often specifically regarded as unattainable. Furthermore, it is seen as a lost, Edenic form of life, contrasting to the progressive nature of Utopian desires. And to point put what the shades in "dis manibus" mean:

In ancient Roman religion, the Manes (/ˈmeɪniːz/, Latin: mānēs, Classical Latin: [ˈmaː.neːs̠]) or Di Manes are chthonic deities sometimes thought to represent souls of deceased loved ones. They were associated with the Lares, Lemures, Genii, and Di Penates as deities (di) that pertained to domestic, local, and personal cult. They belonged broadly to the category of di inferi, "those who dwell below", the undifferentiated collective of divine dead. (from wikipedia page)

POINTING OUT that the Lares are viewed as guardians (sacred guardians if you will -> see Chokehold (I come as a blade, a sacred guardian) and the TOG poem (I am the teeth of God).

The Divide / The Choices

SPEAKING OF the TOG poem, the first email that prompts the choice of house reads "Behold, a Divide", which is very similar to " I am the line between" verse of the poem.

We are presented with two images (which I will get into it later) - House Veridian (crossed swords) and Feathered Host (a feather)

Veridian is probably a reference to the colour viridian, given the symbol is green. Interestingly enough, this pigment is a "hydrated chromium(III) oxide", os an HEXAGONAL SHAPE (the same shape of the images we see on the email. ALSO. OMG YOU GUYSSSS LOOK:

It is antiferromagnetic up to 307 K, the Néel temperature

What's that you ask? WELL:

In materials that exhibit antiferromagnetism, the magnetic moments of atoms or molecules, usually related to the spins of electrons, align in a regular pattern with neighboring spins (on different sublattices) pointing in opposite directions.

Chromium(III) oxide is amphoteric AKA In chemistry, an amphoteric compound (from Greek amphoteros 'both') is a molecule or ion that can react both as an acid and as a base

It is also used to polish BLADES! SWORDS! HMMMM!!!!!

If we think of The House as A Vessel for a god (which is basically what they are, mortal houses of worship), we can definitely see it as "I, the guardian, the fighter, the blade, must endure" . See Chokehold and Higher especially for this.

Feathered Host

I think the connection with thw TNDNBTG/ Euclid is pretty obvious. The constant imagery of angels and heaven in his lyrics, the "cycle" that is completed and repeated with those two songs. The cycle is broken, but it loops again.

You live with angels vs your wings won't find you heaven. You are the garden vs I will go back to Eden. You are far away where I can't reach you vs I will bring down heaven myself for you. Gods vs mortals vs angels. Beginning and End. Like F. Ocean said, "it's a loop. the other side of a loop it's a loop".

I think both of these choices are a very clear representation of the story that has been presented in the trilogy, but even more so in TMBTE. The dichotomy between continuing to fight, to spill blood, to be a hones and well polished tool, and the realisation of the enormity of the violence that persists. The desire for peace, the longing for simpler, more innocent times, for Eden, for Arcadia. A utopia that may only exist in dreams, long forgotten. The fields of elation now barren and sealed off.

Euclid marks the moment of breach, where there's finally a clear thread of hope. The break of the bough, the killing of the self, of the ego. But even then, there is still some attachment for the past weaved between the frayed ends. It's still the autumns leaves, do you remember me? And the final callback to TNDNBTG, the loop. An everlasting ouroboros, the venomous serpent biting its own tail, Even and The Tempter one and the same.

I find it interesting how the double-swords can mean so much. In tarot, it represents an impasse, a stalemate (the card is a blindfolded woman - see the Rain guardian - under the moon holding the two swords). It's used as a battlefield marker. In chemistry, double daggers are used to indicate the Transition State of a chemical reaction. Much to think about.

Show Me How To Dance Forever

Right so, I already made a half-assed post about the Nothing Lasts Forever to Show Me How To Dance Forever pipeline, but I'm keeping it here anyways. They have mentioned dance many times before, in the WH cover, in Aqua Regia and Ascensionism, in the interludes (where they say something about dancing with life and death both if I'm not mistaken).

Now, Aqua Regia makes a reference to Dark Signs . I'm done dancing to alarm bells // (...) I could see dark signs, alarm bells in your eyes. AND, Dark Signs has one of my most favourite lyrics, which goes: I might bend and break to my basic needs to be loved and close to somebody. WHICH WE CAN CONNECT to I Wanna Dance With Somebody (who loves me).

Which poses the question: WHAT are we dancing to? Are we giving in yet again to the need for love, and reveling in what it is a flawed and broken cadence of pleasure and pain alike? Or are we asking to be shown how to dance instead of fight, how to turn despair into tenderness. How to live this new life, a new beginning? Are we forever doomed to waltz with Death, to balance fire in the earth, or are sailing away to new ports, leaving funeral pyres behind towards a new shore, to Arcadia? MANY SUCH QUESTIONS!

I don't know dawg. Is he Vessel? Black and tall and elegant and kinda weird?? Ridiculous wingspan??? Jk. I know some people have already talked about it, and it's potentially connected to the TOG novel (which I haven't read yet), so I'll leave that to you.

So I've been a long time lurker within the fandom without ever getting particularly involved, but I wanted to show some appreciation for some of the super talented people who go here, because I have read a lot of incredible TOG fic.

I mean this fic is the Big Bitch of the fandom for me, if you haven't already read this, where have you been? But also if you haven't already read this I am so jealous, read it and take your time with it and bawl your eyes out over it and appreciate the joy of reading it for the first time. The level of detail and planning in this fic is indescribable. It follows Nicky trapped in a Time Travellers Wife style life where he jumps back and forth throughout his own timeline, whilst Joe lives his life in chronological order. Exquisitely written.

I mean it's got estranged family, suspenseful chronological structure, cooking, spies, intimate and honest sex scenes, hilarious misunderstandings involving keeping halal, lovely found family moments, and the actual recipes used. What more do you want.

The Reality of Everything by Marbletopempire

One of the fics I desperately waited for each instalment for. Very funny, lots of sexual tension, plenty of Cate Blanchette spotting opportunities.

I saw the creation of this on Tumblr before it was a fic, and it lived up to every expectation. Very sweet and sincere, with lots of great discussions about art, whilst also very funny (Lamp the free loader, Joe sending thirst traps out of irritation) and hot. ItalianAmericanNickyfromBrooklyn and Joe my beloveds.

I love a good hook-up to 'oh shit I have feelings' fic, and this is even more entertaining because Nicky is Lykon's ex, and Joe has very much seen him at his worst.

At one point a tumblr post about Joe the Professor and Nicky the Priest got very popular, and I'm not sure if this fic was inspired by that, but is one of the great fics with similar concepts. Such a lovely, gentle fic about love and also identity, featuring also Nile and a very sweet snail.

4. a story idea you haven’t written yet

I assume this isn't referring to the scraps of partial fics sitting in my WIP folder, even if none of those have been posted yet. Okay, I haven't technically started writing a theoretical sequel to The Conspirator's Gift (X-Men medieval mystery AU), though I do have a doc of story notes and a couple of line fragments. So. That one has a rough plot and character notes - it's another murder mystery, and I know who the victim is, how it happened, and who the other potential suspects are and why, as well as broad strokes of the main character arcs. But no actual writing has been accomplished yet, mostly because I'm not ready to commit to another LONG fucking fic at the moment (in a fandom I've drifted out of, though I'm sure I'll drift back in eventually, because it's X-Men and I always do). Also because I'm still pushing through the thorny issue of how to sustain a mystery when one of the main characters is a goddamn telepath.

11. a WIP you’d like to finish someday

ALL OF THEM, UGH. For TOG in particular, I do want to circle back to Joe/Nicky Firefly fusion fic (in the same 'verse as I'm not ready yet (for the light to dim), for whatever that's worth), and a Lykon-as-new-immortal canon divergence AU. Both of those have a few thousand words written and rough outlines for the rest. I've just not been in a TOG mindset lately. But hopefully I'll circle back to them eventually.

12. a trope you’re really into right now

I mean, I always have my favorite tropes, those don't really change. Canon divergence AUs are still top of mind at the moment, those are perennial faves. And friend to lovers, always, always. 😉

This is so sweet! It made my day🥹

1. I finished the ACOTAR series late 2023 and I was devastated to find out that it wasn’t completed! It’s soooooo hard waiting for the next installment in a series. I went through this with The Land of Stories and The Trials of Apollo too 😭😭😭. So yeah I searched online for Elucien/pro Lucien/anti IC content and I couldn’t find shit ANYWHERE. The only place I even saw some decent content was on Tumblr, so I started posting my analyses and rants and writing about ACOTAR and it turned out many people agreed with me! It was such a relief to finally find Lucien stans who also saw holes in SJM’s writing!

2. I resonate with Nesta the most. She’s just so relatable and human to me. First with the parental trauma (real), second with feeling like they’ve disappointed everybody because they weren’t able to do things that no teen girl should have to do, pushing people away because she’s afraid they’ll leave, spitting facts and everybody getting mad at you for it. And Nesta’s modesty: damned if you do, damned if you don’t. I’ll never forgive SJM for robbing her of her modesty, but it’s honestly reflective of how women like her are treated irl. My own family wants me to be more modest (i’m already pretty damn modest) while the outside world wants me to be less modest, and it’s really frustrating being put in a box like that and not being able to be yourself. Nesta’s hard shell soft interior is me-core.

3. I think by far SJM’s best book is Tower of Dawn. The worldbuilding, the romance, the plot, the chemistry between Chaol and Yrene (and Nesryn and Sartaq) was perfection. And Chaol being a genuinely flawed and human character in a world full of Fae feeling useless and learning to grapple with himself and find his purpose and a man who had always prided himself on his body learning to see that he is so much more than that, that he is as much a man with his wheelchair as he is without it, and Yrene, a character who rules by peace and healing, not violence and destruction, showing everybody how strong she is…well, it’s unlike so many of SJM’s books and she didn’t write it to be popular and tropey (Chaol is wildly unpopular in the TOG fandom) which is why it’s so good.

4. My favorite SJM couple that is already confirmed endgame is Elide and Lorcan from Throne of Glass. God, I love them. Elide, the cunning little witch with a limp and innocent eyes, showing just how strong she can be, wielding Lorcan’s axe (😍) and saving him on the battlefield. Manipulating everybody with a few choice words and a flutter of her eyes. Lorcan being utterly mesmerized from the start. Being a menstruation king and taking such good care of her during her periods. Washing her clothes, bringing her dinner…i mean he is so malewife. Elide being a canon ace queen who only engaged in sexual activities after she trusted and loved Lorcan so deeply that she would allow herself to be vulnerable with him. Elide being sassy as hell and Lorcan being into it. Another human, very real character who is a survivor and quite unlike any other character in the SJM-verse.

Aside from that, Ruhnlidia is 🔥 and amongst those which aren’t technically canon endgame yet, Elucien. The political couple. The fashion-forward couple. The charming couple. The regency couple. The brown-eyed couple. The nonviolent couple. They’re the only two who know they’re mates from the start. Arranged marriage forced proximity trope. The tension, the yearning, Lucien as a fucking male lead…gahhhhhhhwodnwksnaklahiknj

I do not practice exclusives after bad experiences, and while I will put more attention to mutuals, I am not mutually exclusive, but I do hold the right to be selective in those I write with.

I am incredibly busy, so activity will be medium to low, and replies come out through my queue, right now I have it set to two posts a day. This is to help me manage my time and stress level when it comes to writing. However, I will usually post the first reply to something I ask for when it's immediately written to get a thread started.

I do love ships, and this has been the one character where i've been super open to it, but shipping with Bucky is chemistry based.

I'm open to plotting, but as a rule, I'm horrible at it initially. I like to start off winging things to see where it leads the characters and how they interact with each other. But don't hesitate to message me if you're interested in something.

I try to keep this a drama free zone - call outs, hate, and rude anons are not welcome - I've had a lot of bad experiences with partners, so I ask that my boundaries are respected and if you have an issue with me or the portrayal hard block.

au; the sharpest weapon (asteri)

amaya's arrival in midgard gained the attention of the asteri in the worst way. rigelus discovered amaya's powers and sought to use her as a spy and enforcer for the asteri. she is eventually placed in einar's home to report on the dealings of the fae directly to rigelus himself. *i tend to lean on inspiration from the winter soldier story in marvel. can be combined with a corruption arc*

au; legend bound (survival)

amaya did not travel to midgard, but instead recovered in velaris and remains a member of the inner circle. she ruled velaris in rhys's absence during amarantha's reign sub au -- au; at what cost (utm) amaya joined rhys at amarantha's party and was subsequently imprisoned as he was under the mountain. amarantha does not know she holds two daemati in her grasp and amaya tries to do what she can to help her brother

au; this world is primal (beast)

tamlin could not save amaya from spring's plot, but instead tried to hide her until she was safe by transforming her into a dragon. however, magic is fickle and he could not break the curse after the ashes of the plot settled. now, amaya lives her days as a beast protecting the northern most reaches of the night court and her nights as her fae self. *inspired by swan lake*

follows amaya's canon, except she appeared in wendlyn instead of midgard. aware of amaya's temendous power, maeve attempted to coerce her into a blood oath, but amaya escaped to erilea shortly after magic fell and has been hiding from the valg queen ever since.

takes place in any historical context. amaya is typically the daughter of a titled lord and is highly educated despite the norms of society.

covers any interactions that take place in the got timelines. amaya hails from house dayne and carries valyrian ancestry that is marked by her violet eyes and her family's affinity to the targaryens. in the hotd timeline, amaya is also a dragonseed who aids rhaenyra's claim to the throne; however, she loses her dragon in battle and is dealing with "losing her wings" in the got canon timeline, amaya is a younger cousin to ashara and arthur dayne. her brother, rhys, became lord of starfall after arthur's death at the tower of joy. *all other timelines, such as the conquest, will be plotted on a case by case basis*

amaya is an atlantian of mixed draken bloodline descent. her blood gave her the ability to call wings at will and her family has been sworn in service to the consort. when the gods slept, so did she until she was woken and taken to the blood crown by ires. understanding the great power amaya held, isbeth experimented on her and created the first revenant, causing amaya to lose her wings in the process. she bows her head and obeys in the name of survival, but she has never given up her dreams of seeing atlantia once more.

amaya is a career from district 1 who won her games 3 years after her brother rhys did, thereby becoming an overnight sensation. despite being from a career district, amaya's parents put her in the academy program so she would learn how to survive, not because they believed in the capitol propaganda. as a result, amaya is also a firm supporter of the rebellion.

His hand was warm on Joe’s face, his broad palm cupping around his jaw. He pressed into the contact, unabashedly seeking that gentle press of skin. His arm got tighter again, wrapping around Nicky’s waist and splaying his fingers along his side. The slightest indentations of ribs and the softness of skin matched up perfectly to his hand, and he counted the steady beat of Nicky’s 900 year old heart. He felt the measured expansion and contraction of his breathing. Joe looked down at him like he had to memorize every inch of his face, as if he hadn’t long since dedicated every part of him to the inside of his eyelids.

Joe felt Nicky’s heart, and held his gaze steadily. His eyes looked like the sunny seascape outside their window, and Joe felt like his strings were cut. The tension drained from his muscles, and he let it all wash over him in waves.

They were home. They were home.

“Can I, I want to just…” his voice was still deep and rough, sleep crashing back into him as the last of the adrenaline ebbed away. “Can I just hold you?”

hello hello! I’ve been working on a the old guard/reverse!verse au for the batfam since december of 2020, and I am finally ready to post. full fic will be released tomorrow (jan 12) both here and on ao3, but for now, here’s a sneak peek:

“O, here.”

“I need a favor.”

“Depends. You funding my coffee budget for this little favor, or is this another freebie? You’re almost out of those, by the way.”

“A month’s worth, if you do it quickly,” Bruce responds, inching closer to the tail of the cruiser. He sees the cop’s eyes narrow suspiciously in the rearview mirror through the back window.

“I suppose I can lend my time. What do you need?”

“Shut off all of the security cameras in a five block radius from my location. Jam the radio of cruiser GCPD #207, and scrub all records of Richard John Grayson from police records for the next 72 hours.” He hesitates. “Aside from a record of his death tonight.”

The comm is silent.

“Oracle,” Bruce barks.

“Consider it done,” she responds. “But you damn well better explain what the hell is going on later, B.”

Bruce grunts and ends the call, pressing his foot to the gas. He races alongside the cruiser and whips the steering wheel to the side as he passes, sending his own vehicle lurching into a devastating roll. He braces as it tumbles, hears the screeching of tires as the cruiser skids to a halt, as his own car stops upside down, his wrist snapping as the back end of the vehicle grinds into a dead intersection. Bruce goes limp, feigning unconsciousness as footsteps rush across the pavement, the cop yelling into a radio that shouldn’t be working if Barbara has done her job.

“–we’ve got a 10-50, requesting an ambulance and officer backup, I have a kid in my cruiser–”

Bruce breathes as glass is expelled from his skin, as the bones in his wrist click back into place, as the cop drops to his knees next to the shattered window. Static screams over the radio and goes silent. The officer pauses.

Bruce waits. 

“What– Rohrbach? Hello? Can anybody hear me?”

He clicks at his radio in confusion and Bruce lunges out the door.

tagged by @lindstromm - thanks! I'm in a bleh mood so a good askmeme is right up my alley at the moment.

1. How many works do you have on AO3?

229, which include any fic I've written going back to 2002. About 30 of those works are vids instead.

2. What’s your total AO3 word count?

1,518,992! I just passed the 1.5mil mark with my last fic, and am very pleased with that. Especially because I remember only passing the 1mil mark early on in TOG fandom, so I've written quite a lot of those words just in the past few years. (By my standards, at least, that's a lot!)

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Many. I am very multifannish at heart. I tend to settle into one primary fandom for a few years at a time, but even then, I'm still writing the occasional oneshot for random other fandoms. Most recent primary fandoms were The Old Guard and X-Men, most recent fic posted was for Heartstopper (and I'll likely linger in that fandom for a bit now that I'm here).

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

Logical Deduction (HP, Remus/Sirius) - a very silly fic from 2006 that has, to my mild dismay, somehow risen the kudos ranks (6245 kudos?!) by virtue of the sheer enormity of HP fandom. So it goes.

it's like one of us woke up (X-Men, Charles/Erik) - XMFC canon divergence / fix-it fic. I'm still unsure why this is my most popular Cherik fic, but I'm not mad about it.

she's the one that they call old whatsername (Star Trek AOS, Kirk/Spock) - my only non-crossover Trek fic, and always-a-girl!Kirk to boot. I do love this one, still.

The Pond Continuum (Doctor Who, Amy/Rory) - in which Amy and Rory unwittingly encounter various other companions as they live out their post-Doctor life on the slow path. I am fond.

life is very long (Old Guard, Nicky/Joe) - my first TOG fic, posted like a week after the movie hit fandom like a ton of bricks, and reaping the kudos benefits of being in the right place at the right time. It was a good entry point into a new fandom for me, for sure!

I do love that my top 5 are all completely different fandoms; that feels very reflective of me as a writer. (Top 6, actually, since #6 is MCU.)

5. Do you respond to comments?

Yes, always, if only with a quick thanks. Because I really appreciate receiving them, and want the commenters to know.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

The angstiest ENDING? I have to dig deeper into the past for those, because I was more prone to writing them when I was much younger. These days, while I do enjoy a bit of angst along the way, I NEED a happy ending. Probably one of my old Remus/Sirius fics, but I'm not going trawling for a link now.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Most of them, lately. I need to believe in happiness. Fandom is my escapism from an increasingly grimdark reality.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Very rarely, fortunately. Let's keep it that way. The backbutton is right there if you don't like any of my fics, no hard feelings.

9. Do you write smut?

Not really? Sex scenes, yeah, sometimes, but I've only got 4 fics (out of 229) rated as Explicit, and honestly, glancing over them now, they probably only really warrant an M rating. I have no interest in describing bits and bodily fluids in graphic detail, I don't personally find that sexy. But sex is a significant element of human connection for many folks, so yeah, I'll include it where it feels appropriate.

10. Do you write crossovers?

Yes, though I prefer fusions (characters from one verse written into another) to more literal crossovers (character A from fandom A meets character B from fandom B). But I've certainly written a few. They're fun!

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not to my knowledge.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yes, several! I'm always excited and honored when that happens.

13. Have you ever cowritten a fic before?

Nope, never. I'd be curious to try that out someday, though honestly, writing is such a private/internal activity for me that I'm not sure I'd be any good at it.

14. What is your all time favorite ship?

I do NOT play favorites in this way. I love all my OTPs in all their unique and individual ways, and I'll always happily revisit them years and years later (as a reader, at least). Here, let's just say that Mulder/Scully was my very first ever OTP, so they will always have a special place in my heart.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I've never abandoned a WIP once I've started posting it (though a couple took YEARS to finish, ugh), so really, now we're just looking at my personal WIP folder in gdocs. There are a few in there I'm sad about leaving unfinished. Um, let's go with an old Doctor Who/Torchwood fic, which I've got like 15k words written for but have long since moved on from. Every few years I'll dig it up and reread what I wrote and quietly mourn the fact that I never finished it, but there's no way I'll ever get back into that particular headspace (and the fandom is a very different place now).

16. What are your writing strengths?

Character voices. I'm a good mimic.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Sex scenes/action scenes. I despise writing these. Smut I avoid, but action scenes are sometimes necessary, and they drive me up a fucking wall.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language during a fic?

If it's just a few words/brief phrases sprinkled in, because that's how the character in question would speak, great. If there's extended dialogue - well, still depends on the character POV to me. If the character DOES speak the other language, I'd write it out in English (since that's the language I write fic in) and indicate through the narration that they're actually speaking Italian, or French, or what have you. If the POV character does NOT speak the language themself but is overhearing it, I don't include the dialogue at all, just narration to describe it. It's all about whose POV we're in and what's actually being understood, to me.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

X-Files. You will not find those fics on my AO3. I was very young then.

20. Favorite fic you’ve written?

NO FAVORITES. TOO MANY FICS. My most recent fic is usually my current favorite, anyway, so have one last plug for and we have all the time in the world (to get it right) if you're into Heartstopper, and let's move on. 😉

I haven't posted since the start of the year but I guess I'm kind of back? I don't think I missed much here haha but I've been focused more on booksta and reading (I'm having a great reading month so far!). I don't know why no one told me to read the Dark Verse series by RuNyx sooner because I devoured that series 😍

I started my CC reread so I'm excited to dive back into Maasverse theories!

About the new CC covers... they're kind of YA even though I think Sarah wants to rebrand all her books to adult. But come on woman, we're literally dying for CC3 news. The new TOG books sale day were announced last Tuesday, and the CC covers this past Tuesday, so who knows what could happen next Tuesday 👀 I hope I'm wrong but I still think title/release date announcement will come in April/May which = early 2024 release.

I hope you're all doing well 🤍 it's nice to filter out the fandom's drama and I prefer it stays that way.
