On October 16, the Lilleküla Circular Economy Center (located at Mustjõe 40) was officially opened, marking the first of its kind in both Tallinn and Estonia. The center offers residents the opportunity to sort their waste and repair items.
The city of Tallinn turned one of its waste-treatment plants into a circular economy center, with collection points, repair stations, second-hand shops and educational programs, to encourage citizens to engage with the waste sector.
“Human activity has disrupted the natural balance. We need to bring our actions back within nature’s limits, and the circular economy plays a key role in this process,”
The Lilleküla Circular Economy Center is located in the heart of the community, offering residents an easy and convenient way to sort waste. The complex is bordered on two sides by a noise barrier, and the surrounding area is richly landscaped. In November, a smart access system will be launched, allowing visitors to book a time online for waste drop-off, select the types and quantities of waste, enter their vehicle number, and, if necessary, pay for the service. The barrier opens automatically when the vehicle’s number is recognized, making entry quick and convenient. LED-lit signage ensures visibility even in the dark, making it easy to sort waste properly.
In the center’s sewing repair workshop, anyone can repair their broken clothes or household textiles. The workshop is equipped with machines and tools, including sewing machines, an ironing center, scissors, measuring tapes, and needles. Both beginners and experienced sewers can receive guidance from a professional tailor. In the soft furniture repair workshop, residents can fix their broken furniture, with tips provided by a skilled upholsterer. The workshop is equipped with all the necessary tools, including sewing machines, foam saws, staple guns, and compressors. Visitors only need to bring their own materials to both workshops. Another noteworthy feature is the free reuse room, where visitors can bring items that are no longer needed but still in good condition, giving them a second life where they are needed. The circular economy center also includes a free bicycle repair station and an environmentally-friendly toilet, which uses handwashing water for flushing.

Nature Journaling - Girdled Tree
Originally posted on my work website but I wanted to share it here too.
Whenever I’m leading a hike or even just talking with visitors in the nature center, there are always a few questions I find myself answering frequently enough that they stick in my mind. So, during a chilly hike through the fresh snow a few days ago, I stumbled upon the cause of one of these often asked questions: “Why is there a ring cut into some of the trees throughout the forest?”
To me this is the kind of question that begs for an entry in my nature journal, it’s the perfect subject o spark curiosity, make careful observations, and in this case, follow up with answers. But as much as I enjoy nature journaling outdoors, a growing cold breeze reminded me I could finish the project in the office, so I took some photos, made some notes about what I could see or feel and go to work in the warmth of the Nature Center.
Journaling About an Odd Tree
But my eyes, and fingers, are drawn to the sap, frozen by the temperature, mid-drip down the side of the tree in off-white streaks. In warmer months, I’ve touched it and pulled away sticky fingers, but now, the sap is solid, a little flaky, and cemented to the bark of the tree. I can’t help but think about maple syrup and wonder, how cold does sap need to be to freeze?
So many questions, thoughts, and ideas pop into my mind every time I see these trees. And while I could go on for pages about all three topics, I think I’d like to these observations to answer the question posed earlier: “Why is there a ring cut into some of the trees throughout the forest?”
What Makes This Tree Different?
To start, let’s take a moment to identify the tree itself. The trees on our trail system that are subject to this odd process are Norway Spruces, they make up a large portion of the forest just beyond the parking lot and along the trail to our bridges. These evergreens can grow quickly, reaching a height of 60 feet tall in a short twenty years. In its native European habitat, it can even grow to be 150 feet tall!
These trees being so far from their native habitat is part of the reason you might find a cut ring on the trunk. Nonnative trees like this are great for creating quick forests where there was once only agricultural field, but ideally, we want to restore the forest to native species like White pine, Hemlock, Black spruce, and other species. So as new native trees get planted, old Norway spruces get chopped down or have ring cut in them.
This process, called girdling, effectively kills the tree by removing the protective bark and the cambium layer. The bark protects the tree from sickness, fires, impacts and more while the cambium layer is responsible for creating new growth of the tree and passing nutrients between the roots and the canopy of the tree.
Without the protective bark or the cambium pathways for nutrients to travel, the tree will starve. The sap dripping down the trunk can no longer make it to the canopy high above. But it begs the question, “why not just cut the tree down?

Girdled to Make a Healthier Forest
If we wanted to just remove the trees, cutting them down would be best, but girdling some of the trees and leaving them purposely creates standing dead trees which provide essential forest habitat for a wide variety of species including mammals, birds, insects, and even amphibians. Research done on “Attributes of Standing Dead Trees in Forests” indicates that on average, healthy forests in the United States tend to have 11 standing live trees for every standing dead one. By girdling a few trees, we are purposefully creating habitat that better aligns with other healthy forests.
So, the next time you hike on a managed trail system and find a girdled tree, pause a moment and try to identify the cambium layer, the state of the sap and what animals might decide to make a home in it. These trees may look odd, but they have an important role to play in our forest habitats.

In a move aimed at prioritizing domestic access to America’s national parks, President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to hike entry fees for foreign visitors.
The order is intended to support maintenance and conservation efforts, the Washington Times reported.
It comes alongside the formation of a federal commission on environmental policy and follows the administration’s proposal to cut $1 billion from the National Park Service budget in 2026.
The order did not specify the amount of the fee increase or when the changes would take effect.
Currently, entrance fees range from $20 to $35 per vehicle, depending on the park.
The change applies only to international tourists visiting federally managed parks.
The White House stated the initiative is designed to make park access more affordable for Americans, who already contribute through federal taxes.
Officials described the shift as a matter of fairness and resource prioritization.
Under the order, U.S. citizens will also receive preference in park reservation and permitting systems.

The Tunnel Apparati Diaries Book Release
With the guidance of Mau (a.k.a. Phage), Ashwin Pember, recently ascended Ancestor of the Sunspot, projects their mind to Earth via the Tunnel Apparatus. Only, they do this to become the new headmate of the twenty-seven year old autistic transgender plural system of Sarah and Goreth Ampersand of Portland, OR, who think that Phage is their old imaginary friend.
Unfortunately, Sarah and Goreth struggle to manage their already difficult life.
They’ve been leaning on their housemates and friends for support, but playing host to an alien being challenges them all.
Furthermore, there's an important reason Phage came to Earth in the first place, and it needs Sarah and Goreth to cooperate with Ashwin in order to achieve its goals.
The Tunnel Apparati Diaries tell the story of how the Sunspot Chronicles came to be translated and published on Earth, but what does this mean for humanity?
Because there’s a probe full of construction nanites left somewhere in the mountains of Washington State and someone needs to take responsibility for it before it falls into the wrong hands.

The Tunnel Apparati Diaries take place on Earth between the years of 2023 and 2025, in Portland Oregon, and follow the lives of Sarah and Goreth Ampersand, Erik, and the Audreys – a friends group of transgender plural systems – after they make contact with an alien visitor to Sarah and Goreth’s psyche, Ashwin Pember.
Soon it becomes clear that this is not a product of their trauma or mental illness. It is a real event, actual first contact, and the fate of the Earth is on the line. But the personal impacts of this contact end up taking priority.
Their personal accounts, each book written by a different system member (Ashwin, Goreth, and then Sarah), explore the challenges of building community and relationships while being multiply disabled, transgender, queer, autistic, and experiencing a consensus reality that does not match that of most of the rest of the world.
It is a sequel and a possible entry point to reading the Sunspot Chronicles, and the two series together combine themes of plurality, neurodiversity, biodiversity, and the exercise and protection of personal consent and autonomy in the face of past and rising fascism. Every book has its own unique focus and take on building and keeping found family and community here on Earth and out amongst the stars. And what it means to be person, whether human or otherwise.
Written by different members of the Inmara Fenumera, an autistic transgender plurality living in the Pacific Northwest, the Tunnel Apparati Diaries offer genuine personal insight into the lived experiences of diverse plural systems (people living with DID, OSDD, and other forms of plurality), but with a strong dash of wish fulfillment, light romance, and adventure.
The Future is Plural. It deserves good plural fiction.

Play-By-Blog #1: The Isle by Luke Gearing
Welcome to my large-scale play-by-post of The Isle by Luke Gearing! We are playing this adventure with its original system, The Vanilla Game (although this will likely be adjusted somewhat to fit the Play-By-Blog format). This is the first proper entry, but you can check out PBB #0 to get a feel for the ideas behind this play-by-blog concept and at character creation. For now, let's lay some groundwork.

Last week, LOADS of you (over 150 people) voted for our character's class and Magic-User won in a landslide. Using that, I randomly rolled a character (using this Vanilla Game character generator). Let's get to know them a bit before we dive in.
The Player Character: Medon Girdou - Magic Cutpurse
Medon Girdou, a cutpurse turned unlikely wizard, is in a bad way. You don't stage a solo raid on a place like the isle if things are going well. Somewhere back out in the world, there are forces calling for Medon - calling on their debts, calling for their death, or calling them home (when they'd rather be anywhere else). Now, the chance of riches, enough to possibly settle the score, has brought them here to the isle.
[Because Medon is braving The Isle alone, they are coming in at Level 3 to help turn the odds very slightly in their favor. This isn't their first raid.]
[We'll let any background and whatnot build out during play. Feel free to propose your own ideas about what kind of person Medon is and what may have come before but remember, Medon's true character will come out during play and be determined by the actions they take!]
With their katana in one hand, spellbook in the other, and a pocket full of cheese and lead figurines, they step onto...
THE ISLE
"The isle is tiny, a mere 40 acres of forbidding rock and low grasses. Seen from the sea, the monastery buildings stand adjacent to the peak of the isle, lit by a fire atop a tower. The monks never let the fire go out.
"Cliffs rise above the bitter sea, mauled by waves and weather. Fallen stones jut like Frisian horses, big enough to skewer whales. The abbot knows this, because he has seen it."
You've convinced Cioran, a local fisherman, to grant you passage to the island, claiming to be a pilgrim in search of your god. Once a month, he delivers supplies to the monks on the isle out of some sense of obligation you can't quite place. You watched him sit and listen to the sea in the dark of night for hours aboard the boat.
Cioran drops you at a small cove on the island's eastern side [C], wanting to see you on your way before sailing around the island to the main jetty. He's not sure how the monks would take to an unexpected visitor on his boat, even if you are a pilgrim. He'll check this cove again in a month, if you are looking to return to the mainland. His ship slides away quietly around the northern cliffs.
You are alone.
A bloated corpse, fought over by a dozen or so gulls, is bobbing facedown in the water of a small, rocky alcove.
A stone-carved staircase leads up out of the cove, coated in wet, slimy moss fed by the ever-humid conditions. [Saving Throw to not fall down the stairs and take damage: Success!] Taking your time, you manage to safely climb to the top and look out across the rest of the isle.
[You can see out to 3, 4, 5, and 6. 2 and 1 are partially obscured.]
To the north [3], you see a squat formation of man-made stone some 30 or more feet high, scars and bird shit marring the surface.
To the northwest [4], you see a collapsed building of some sort, a loose pile of rubble.
To the southwest [5], you see a scenic view of the western sea atop of an hill topped with an outcropping of rocks.
To the south [6], you see the Monastery, the reason you came to this place. The supposed home to a number of riches, meant to bring glory to a god but that do little more than languish here in obscurity when they could change everything for you, if only you can get to them.
Beyond these places, you can make out a partial view of a sizeable collection of graves to the far north [1] and the upper branches of a large tree to the northwest [2], past the collapsed building.
The choice now, of course, is...
