Superworm (Zophobas Darkling Beetle Larva) - Zophobas atratus
It’s been awhile since I’ve done two posts in a day, but I’m really excited to share these “educational insects” with you! Over the weekend I got the chance to visit the Ontario Science Centre to see their Bug Lab Exhibition. The showcases were created by Te Papa, the museum of New Zealand in collaboration with Weta. Both institutions came together to make something absolutely astounding, engaging and most fascinating. The exhibitions feature large models of insects in their environment and exhibits that demonstrate their magnificence and how much there is to learn about them and to further apply that knowledge to our own growth as a society. It’s mostly geared towards children, but I thoroughly enjoyed it myself, and I’m very grateful I was able to go. Images of the showcase will arrive on the blog next Tuesday (can’t go spoiling things just yet), but in the meantime we have familiar lab insects to see from the live showcase, many of them a familiar sight in the educational environment. Since these insects belong to the Centre, I’ve labelled them with the Mantis logo. During the live showcase, the presenter was kind enough to allow us to take pictures of these wriggling creatures after introducing them to the audience.
After first seeing them at the ROM before in their darkened, armored adult form, I’m at long last able to showcase the larval stage. No handling as they have the tendency to bite. Nicknamed “Superworm”, these grubs are commonly used as food for birds, reptiles and amphibians given their nutritional value, soft shell, ease of rearing and their sheer numbers and size. This has given them the moniker “mealworms”. However, these Darkling Beetle larvae on display are not reared for the purpose of food, but rather for the showcase of insect metamorphosis. While many kids are familiar with the change of Caterpillar to Butterfly, the idea of Beetles coming from a worm-like form is almost alien to them. In fact, one kid asked if these creatures were snails. Delightful! Seeing an adult Beetle would’ve brought everything full circle and maybe one of their pupae too. I’d have also liked to see a showcase of metamorphosis in the presentation as well, given how prevalent it is to the world of insects. Especially since these insects have to be solitary in order to pupate successfully (they tend to remain larvae if overcrowded with other larvae, though there is a lot of room in this home). Perhaps this strategy comes about as a means of protection from being eaten by a cousin? Or perhaps there just isn’t enough pressure to pupate yet? Either way, the ability to delay their maturity may come in handy for our own benefit, but no one is a child forever.
Pictures were taken on February 20, 2022 at the Ontario Science Centre using a Google Pixel 4. Please go and visit the bugs if you can!

FACS libraries
FACS stands for Facial Action Coding System and it is a systematic method of measuring facial expressions. Paul Ekman and Wallace V. Friesen came with FACS in 1976. FACS was a development from initial FAST (Facial Affect Scoring Technique) by Ekman, Friesen & Tomkins from 1971 and can distinguish all visible facial behaviour. FACS uses Action Units (AU) for every observable component of facial movement (Paul Ekman Group, 2018). “For example ‘happy’ comprises from AU6 (Cheek Raiser) and AU12 (Lip Corner Puller), whereas ‘sad’ comprises AU1 (Inner Brow Raiser), AU4 (Brow Lowerer) and AU15 (Lip Corner Depressor)” (Rachael E.Jack & Philippe G.Schyns, 2015).

Before the actual performance capture can start, library of FACS blend-shapes is created. Most of the leading VFX companies like ILM, MPC or Weta are using USC ICT lighstage, Medusa Rigs, or their own rigs with several cameras and even lighting to capture high-resolution scans of actors’ faces.

Those scans are then cleaned up and saved into FACS libraries of blendshapes, which are used in the rig. One of those libraries Facial ROM was part of the FACETS performance capture system, developed by Weta Digital for original Avatar (2009) ("Weta Digital's FACETS honoured at the Sci-tech Awards", 2018). Another example of FACS blendshape library is ILM’s FEZ recently used for scanning Andy Serkis for his performance capture of Snoke in The Last Jedi.

MPC have created their FACS library of Sean Young and Loren Peta when working on creating a young Rachel version for Blade Runner 2049, though at the end her performance was hand animated ("MPC Replicating Rachael in Blade Runner 2049 (updated)", 2017).
3Lateral has demonstrated its next-gen digital human performance rig of Andy Serkis, which is consisting of 7000 scans ("Epic's Unreal 'When the Serkis comes to town': GDC Part 3", 2018).
