B17G Flying Fortress
Decal replacement paint mask/stencil sets for the 1/48 scale B17 Bomber, currently available for the ‘Queenie’ and ‘American Beauty’ plane schemes. Please not that the nose art is not included in the set. All National Insignia for the fuselage, upper and lower wing, Markings, Tail fin decals (A or W), and the serial numbers are included.
Made from quality kabuki sheets these masks are flexible and can be used multiple times if handled correctly. Thin in design they won’t leave a ridge around your painted insignia like some vinyl mask sets can do. These will also not stretch or shrink as vinyl is known to do. These will allow you to paint aircraft markings and insignias in place of decals, this allows better weathering and a quality looking finish.

Exploring WW2 Model Kits
A fantastic method to learn about history and develop an appreciation for the tremendous achievements of engineering and fighting during this period are WW2 Model Kits. This may be accomplished through historical exploration. You'll be able to build a wide variety of military aircraft, tanks, and other vehicles thanks to the extensive selection of model kits. In this article, we will discuss the fundamentals of WW2 Model Kits, including how to select the appropriate kit for your level of experience and how to assemble the models.
Types of WW2 Model Kits
A diverse selection of WW2 Model Kits is available, each bringing something unique to the table. To begin, aircraft kits are available that provide the means to construct a model of a particular type of aircraft, such as a B-17 bomber or a Spitfire fighter. In addition, there are tank kits available, which make it possible to create an accurate reproduction of a tank from the era. Last but not least, ship kits provide the opportunity to build a large-scale model of a warship or submarine. These kits present a particularly interesting task.
Choosing the Right Kit
When choosing a kit, it is necessary to consider both the degree of expertise you possess and the amount of time you are prepared to put into the endeavour. Some kits are very complicated and need a lot of time and effort to finish, while others are much simpler and can be finished in hours. It all depends on the level of detail that the kit contains. It is also vital to examine the size of the model you will be constructing; some kits are meant for bigger models, while others are made for models of a smaller scale.
Building the Kit
As soon as you decide on the kit you want to construct, it is time to start putting it together. The vast majority of kits come with comprehensive instructions and pictures, making it simple to follow along and assemble your model. If you are new to model construction, it is always a good idea to review the instructions thoroughly before getting started. This is especially important if you are making a complicated model. In addition, you should purchase some essential equipment, such as a miniature hammer, screwdrivers, and a hobby knife, if you do not already own them.
Experience the Thrill of Building WW2 Model Kits
Building WW2 Model Kits may be an extremely gratifying hobby since they allow you to learn about history and develop an understanding of the era's technological advances and military strategies. You may pick a model kit appropriate for your level of experience, whether you are just starting or have years of experience under your belt. The Heinkel He-111 bomber
Used as the main bomber by Germany during WWII, this was owned by the Confederate Air Force in Texas and was the only fully-operational, flying example in the world. I took these photos at the El Toro Air Show at MCAS El Toro, California in 1996. I actually got to take a flight on this amazing aircraft that day. Sadly, this plane crashed in 2016, killing the pilot and co-pilot and completely destroying the plane. Here is a link to a news article about the crash: http://www.aero-news.net/index.cfm?do=main.textpost&id=93788ac9-1b2c-4472-a5ff-1c8dc9b08249
I built my first model airplane When I was 9 years old and it was a 1:32 scale model of a He-111. Wish I still had it!

Things I Like • Vintage WW2 US Quilted Flying Pants

My friend Ben, who runs the specialist vintage menswear shop at the top of the street, found these.
I’d never seen this kind of thing before - they are quilted and goose-down filled trousers for US Army Air Forces air-crew from WW2. This isn’t normally my thing, but I love the quilted effect and the printed USAAF mark.
The trousers are the model A8 and made by the Ben Greenholtz Company.
These trousers were for winter and high-altitude use...and were worn by the crews of the Flying Fortresses of the 8th Army Air Force...that’s the Memphis Belle etc. I guess these kinds of trousers were made in quite large numbers and over a period of time. The USAAF became the USAF at the end of the 1940s.
I remember that there was a scale model of the B17 available from Airfix. The box had a terrific picture on the front, and the graphic signs of the Fortress were really impressive. I found the information, below, on a website devoted to scale modelling
https://www.scalemodellingnow.com/hnaircraft-airfix-boeing-b17g-flying-fortress
The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress was a four-engine heavy bomber developed in the 1930s for the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC). Competing against Douglas and Martin for a contract to build 200 bombers, the Boeing entry (prototype Model 299/XB-17) outperformed both competitors and exceeded the air corps’ performance specifications. Although Boeing lost the contract (to the Douglas B-18 Bolo) because the prototype crashed, the air corps ordered 13 more B-17s for further evaluation. From its introduction in 1938, the B-17 Flying Fortress evolved through numerous design advances.
The B-17 was primarily employed by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) in the daylight strategic bombing campaign of World War II against German industrial and military targets. The United States Eighth Air Force, based at many airfields in central and southern England, and the Fifteenth Air Force, based in Italy, complemented the RAF Bomber Command’s nighttime area bombing in the Combined Bomber Offensive to help secure air superiority over the cities, factories and battlefields of Western Europe in preparation for the invasion of France in 1944. The B-17 also participated to a lesser extent in the War in the Pacific, early in World War II, where it conducted raids against Japanese shipping and airfields.
From its prewar inception, the USAAC (by June 1941, the USAAF) promoted the aircraft as a strategic weapon; it was a relatively fast, high-flying, long-range bomber with heavy defensive armament at the expense of bomb load. It developed a reputation for toughness based upon stories and photos of badly damaged B-17s safely returning to base. The B-17 developed a reputation as an effective bomber, dropping more bombs than any other U.S. aircraft in World War II.
Crew losses were high...and many of the crew were young lads. The crew was made up of 10. You can watch the film, Memphis Belle (1990) for a sense of the danger and heroism associated with this effort. There’s a documentary film, available from the US Library of Congress - Story of a Flying Fortress (1944) which places these machines within the context of the European war and bucolic England...Margaret Bourke White made a terrific photo-shoot of “The Mighty Eighth” for Life Magazine.
https://youtu.be/DW4F_ZMrS3A
Here is a one of our vintage WW2 scarves with the names of some of the most famous flyers. There is a Fortress displayed at the American Air Force Museum at Duxford. The Fortress, a big machine, sits beneath the wing of a Superfortress B29, which is placed beneath a Stratofortress B52 bomber. The building of the museum was designed by Foster and Partners.
I am always freezing cold, so these will keep my nice and warm at home, watching TV. Our central-heating boiler broke down just before New Year and to coincide with the coldest weather of the season. So, these pants have come in to their own. Thank you Ben.

Models have been used throughout films for effect and realism. Often these models improve the film but sometimes the use of models can lead to humorous or disastrous effects.
A believable usage of models in films can be found in the 1990 american production of the film memphis belle. Models are used extensively alongside real planes that America kept after the war. The most impressive usage of a model in this film to me is when they built a realistic scale model of a b-17 bomber and just blew it up. Despite this film being 30 years old it still has amazing usage of models to create realistic scenarios that in my opinion could rival the models out of Lord of the rings with it's believability and realism.
As we can see in this photo, a fake plane plane is being built out of various woods and foam to achieve a realistic look from a distance. Only viewing this model from a distance means that more effort can be put into its structure and strength rather than its detail and historical accuracy.
Although the Americans kept alot of the b-17 bombers from after ww2 models were still used extensively throughout the film to portray damage so that they wouldn't have to damage the real aircraft.they also used model weapons in all of them apart from the main aircraft so that they were safe to use and fly around.

£61m infra loan to pave way for 6,500-home scheme
Homes England has agreed a £61m investment with developer Urban&Civic to fund infrastructure work to pave the way for a new 6,500 home community at Waterbeach in Cambridgeshire.
The loan will fund key strategic infrastructure including roundabout improvements to create a main access route from the A10 and road, drainage and utility works to open up the first phase of the development.
The first £15m round of contracts will be awarded to local businesses in the next six months.
Housing Minister Christopher Pincher said: “Building the homes we need is central to the mission of this Government, which is why we have safely reopened the housing market.
“This £61 million investment from Homes England, the Government’s housing accelerator, will deliver the building blocks of a community that people will be proud to call home, including a new primary school, health centre and community centre.”
Urban&Civic, in partnership with landowner the MOD, has secured outline planning permission to create 6,500 homes and five schools as well as commercial, retail, leisure and community facilities at the former WW2 RAF Bomber Command airfield site six miles north of Cambridge.
The first phase of 1600 homes is currently progressing through planning, and early landscaping, archaeology and remediation work is underway.
Neil Milligan, Head of Infrastructure Finance at Homes England said: “Our investment in large scale, long term projects like Waterbeach demonstrates how our funding can help to accelerate the ambition of master developers like Urban&Civic in developing great places to live and work.
“Covid-19 has presented the industry with many challenges, and it’s great that despite these setbacks we can continue to secure agreements with our partners that build on our pipeline of investing in quality homes and communities and support the wider industry in its recovery.”
Nigel Hugill, Chief Executive of Urban&Civic, said: “Funds generated from initial rentals and house sales will be reinvested to further accelerate delivery with the continuing involvement of local contractors and the house builder supply chain.
“Partnership funding from Homes England is fundamental to that investment model. We would not attempt the same pace and ambition without their long-term loan support.”

AVIATION HISTORY - The Avro Lancaster In All Its Glory: Stats And Facts
An icon of WW2, learn about the specifications of the Lancaster bomber, and how it got its name.
Greg Allwood
15th January 2020 at 5:12pm
The Avro Lancaster bomber first came into service in March 1942 and, as the main RAF heavy bomber, soon became as iconic a part of the British air war as the Supermarine Spitfire.
RAF
Take A Tour Of A WWII Spitfire
18th August 2015
What Were The Dimensions Of The Lancaster?
The aircraft was 69 feet 4 inches long (21.11 metres), 102 ft wide (31.09 m) and 20 ft 6 in height (6.25 m).
How Fast Was The Lancaster?
According to BAE System's heritage page on the Lancaster bomber, entitled 'Avro 683 Lancaster', it could reach speeds of up to 282 mph (454 km/h) at at a weight of 63,000 lb on its four Rolls-Royce Merlin V12 engines. (Although this varied by altitude, and these figures are for the Lancaster I - weights varied with later models).
How Many Models Or Variants Of The Lancaster Were There?
BAE lists 15 other variants besides the 683 base model. These were the B.1, B.1 Special, the PR.1B1 for photographic reconnaissance, the B.1 (FE), modified for the tropics, B.II, B.III, B.III Special, the air-sea rescue variants ASR.III and ASR.3N.III, the maritime recon models GR.3 and MR.3, and the models B.IV, B.VII and B.X, the latter of which was built in Canada, as was the B.XV, of which, only one was produced).
Play Video
What Was The Maximum Weight Of The Bombs The Lancaster Bomber Could Carry?
The aircraft had an impressive lifting capacity. Weighing 36,900 lb empty (or 16,738 kg), it was able to haul an additional 33,100 lb (or 15,014 kg) in fuel and bombs. The Lancaster had a long, unobstructed bomb bay that allowed it to carry the RAF's largest bombs, up to and including the 12,000 lb (5,400 kg) blockbusters, one of which could destroy an entire street or large building.
The impressive bomb hauling capacity meant that Lancasters could be modified to carry the bouncing bombs used in Operation Chastise (the 'Dambusters' raid) against the Ruhr Valley dams. In fact, later on, the Lancaster was able to haul the 22,000-lb Grand Slam Earthquake bomb.
Illustration of the Dambusters raid (image from 'Dambusters: Operation Chastise 1943' by Doug Dildy © Osprey Publishing, part of Bloomsbury Publishing)
How Many Lancaster Bombers Were Made?
Air Marshal Arthur 'Bomber' Harris may have stepped up the bombing campaign against Germany with his first "1,000 bomber raid" against Cologne in May, 1942, but he couldn't sustain assaults on this scale.
Britain was only able to produce 7,377 Lancasters during the war, at a cost of £45,000 to £50,000 each (around £2 million today.)
How Did The Lancaster Bomber Get Its Name?
The Lancaster design was an improvement upon the twin-engined Avro Manchester bomber. The two Vulture engines in the Manchester were switched out for four Merlin ones, and production, for the most part, done in Lancashire before final assembly in Cheshire. Lancaster is the county town for Lancashire and the name of the aircraft derives from here.
The mass bomber raid on Cologne (image: The National Archives UK)
How Many Lancasters Were Shot Down?
According to Bomber Command Museum, over half of the Lancasters produced, 3,932 of them, were shot down during the war, at a total cost of £186,770,000 (or £7,397,375,152 when adjusted for inflation).
What About Aircrews?
Infinitely worse than the material cost was the scale of human loss. The Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund lists 55,573 men as having died serving with Bomber Command during the war.
Many were from Britain, but men - mostly in their late teens - also came from Commonwealth countries and included those who'd escaped from Nazi occupation in Poland, France, and Czechoslovakia.
This is more people than all the personnel who serve in the whole of the RAF today.
Aircrew and ground crew for a Lancaster with the Royal Canadian Air Force
What Was The Plane Used In The Dambusters Raid?
The most famous Lancaster bomber mission was undertaken by 617 Squadron against the Ruhr Valley in Germany and was officially dubbed 'Operation Chastise'. According to Channel 4's 'The Dambusters', as crews then did without modern computerised equipment and had to calculate using maps, compasses, pencils and rulers, flying in a World War 2 sortie was akin to taking "a seven-hour maths exam in the dark while being shot at".
These difficulties were intrinsic to all bombing missions, though, for the pilots of Operation Chastise, the Dambusters raid had the additional challenge of having to be flown a mere 100 feet off the ground to avoid radar.
The Mohne Dam of the Ruhr Valley blown open after Operation Chastise
Besides Bombs, What Other Weapons Was The Lancaster Armed With?
Unlike its American counterpart, the B-17G, which bristled with an impressive 13 .50-caliber machine guns, the Lancaster only had 10 such guns, in three sets of twin-gun turrets located on the belly (ventral guns), on top (dorsal guns), and in the nose, and a set of four guns in the tail. These were M1919 Browning machine guns with 1000 rounds each, or enough for roughly two minutes of continuous firing.
The tail gun on a restored Lancaster (image by Per from Thunder Bay, Canada)
How Many Aircrew Flew In A Lancaster Bomber?
Lancasters were also crewed by fewer men than the 10-man B-17s. A pilot and flight engineer would be in the cockpit, with the bomb-aimer on his stomach in the compartment underneath them, aiming and releasing bombs as well as the front machine-gun. Tucked behind the pilot and flight engineer was the navigator, and near him was the wireless operator, who also fired the dorsal guns when necessary. Rounding out the 7-man crew were the ventral and rear gunners at the back of the plane.
Conditions were tough. The impressive haulage capacity meant a trade off in armour plating, so crews were vulnerable to enemy fire, and the cold.
At 20,000 feet, temperatures inside the cramped aircraft could plummet to minus 40, potentially leading to frostbite.

RAF 100: Take A Tour Of The Royal Air Force's Top 10 Planes Of All Time

How Many Lancaster Bombers Are There Left In The World Today?
Today there are only 17 surviving Lancaster bombers in the world, but only two of them are able to fly. Second World War enthusiast Martin Willoughby spent seven years and £250,000 constructing a replica Lancaster for last year's Armed Forces Day.
