Quick week summary - 22-28/08/2022
Hi there! It’s been crazily fast week. I’ve been working out, working a lot and eating a lot of unhealthy stuff - which I hope I will manage to change this upcoming week. But at least I’m healthy, alive and stick to my deadlines.
Workout summary:

Week 2 Summary
This week we were introduced to our morphing project. Unfortunately, our animated sketchbook project wasn’t formally introduced to us this week. Motion graphics is probably the most commonly used form of animation; ranging from TV adverts to game loading screens, from website transitions to meeting presentations and more. Motion graphics is the most accessible (financially speaking for the client/individual), this is because the cost is limited to a motion graphics designer (Reducing the need for expensive equipment etc). Considering this factor, means there is a range of examples that advocate both the success and failure of other motion graphics designers. In this session, we explored what makes a motion graphics piece good or not so good. What became apparent to me was the use of colour, they tend to use very welcoming colours, bright colours to a degree. Precision and accuracy of the visual representation of the objects within the piece was paramount to the further understanding and recognition of what the audience would interpret. This visual language between the designer and audience must be clear and easily understandable for the piece to have the success it deserves. If the imagery is lacking or obscure, so to is the message the audience decodes. Motion graphics tends to be very simple, even in it’s representation of people and objects. Establishing the key components of what makes the subject recognisable is fundamental to the strength of the piece. The key to the success of the piece depends on how well an object or character can be simplified and presented, diagnosing what makes the particular in hand, unique.
We were introduced to our morphing project this week and set out on planning our animation short. I struggled to think of a film at first, but I had chosen to base my animation around War of the Worlds: 2005. My two chosen objects are the spaceship and the hand grenade as I feel they carry the most prominence in representing the film. Based on my current skill level and the complexity of my animation idea, I don’t know how achievable my idea is. I think it will be best to think about it over the next few days and see if I can find a range of ideas I could work with. To further my skill with After Effects, I think it would be beneficial to study more tutorials and conduct some experiments based on my findings.
This week we were presented with our essay questions for this project and why conflict carries importance to the success of a story. We learnt that stories flourish when there is conflict. Akin to last week, we learnt the audience enjoys seeing a character suffer, as the characters suffering uncovers our own fears and anxieties. Stories can be dependant on a form of conflict as the story needs to progress, if the variables are constant then there is no change and almost excludes any purpose to what is being told. If there is no conflict then the story as it were, would be more of a statement rather than a story. Nothing would progress along a timeline, so there would be no suggestion of a journey and there would be no trigger or call to action, thus leaving the story feeling incomplete and non-engaging, in a constant state of equilibrium. The key in my opinion to the success of a story, is how much contrast and distance there is between the exposition and the climax, and the trigger needs to be explosive. We also learnt that plot organisation and structure is vital to the success of a story. Careful and deliberate organisation of events in the plot, ensures the audience understands the story, rather than presenting them with discombobulated pieces of information that leaves them with more questions than answers. A story before it is a narrative is called the mechanic form, and after being developed and moulded into a narrative, it is then called the organic form.
Overall this week has been positive. I think reflecting after this week would be useful, allowing me to explore my ideas more. I am unsure on the War of the Worlds animation, so broadening my horizons with inspiration paths should hopefully reveals richer possibilities. I have learnt about where motion-graphics are used and called upon at and industrial and commercial scale.

Year 2 Weekly Summaries - Week 15
Tumblr media
Day 1 - Retopology,uv and substance painter
In today’s session I was able to finalise the uvs created over the weekend around the arms of the character. I ensured that each of the edge flows looped around the subject and this would allow a good bake in future stages. By doing this the edge flows supported the topology of the character for example around the collar I had to create a lip to show the change in shapes from the collar bone. After the retopology was finalised I moved onto uvs. This was relatively straight forward as I selected a camera based view and simply selected the loops around the waist, shoulders, forearms and wrists. As well as selecting the ankle. This gave the base to move forward onto unfolding the uvs. For this I had to cut along the edge of the loop previously cut and move the subject in the uv editor and then press unfold. I the. Pack each of the unfolded uvs into the corner and exported to substance painter.
Substance painter was a relatively new process for me as I had never used the software before. I found the software quite intuitive and really easy to use. By simply dragging the material onto the elected uv I was able to give my character texture therefore lifting his overall look. This also helped to distinguish what each part of the character was made of for example the material of the clothes compared to the braces and belt. I chose a white denim for the shirt and a darker denim for the trousers sticking too the 2d concept of the character. For the texture of the belt and braces I chose a leather and coloured the belt brown and the braces black. The most interesting part of the design comes within the head as I chose to use a Caron fibre material. This will create a distinct look as the lights are placed on the character for the walk cycle and turnaround.
Day 1 - Group feedback session with Lyndsey
In todays group feedback session I was able to identify how to make my screen play cyclical. For this I pitched the idea of having the character play with a gun at his desk at the start of the screenplay and then have the new accountant pull the same gun out at the end. Lyndsey didn’t think this idea would fit the characters persona at the start and so suggested another route. I chose to forward two ideas the first one was that the character would be handed the gun by his boss and he doesn’t want to use it and so locks it in the desk. The second was too have the character playing with cards at the start. This would therefore establish the characters motive for going to the card game later that evening. I think I will try to incorporate both of the ideas into the screenplay as it will greatly benefit the story telling. However, I feel like I am getting severely close to the word count and so need to condense the screenplay entirely.
Day 2- Rigging the character
In todays open session I was able to begin rigging the character for my project. I used the knowledge learned from previous sessions to help establish a base in which to start the rig.  However I quickly realised because of time constraints towards the end of this project I need to move quicker in order to get to animating the characters walk cycle, turnaround and third actions. For this I chose to auto rig the character. This does have its draw backs as a severe amount of weight painting is needed to full establish the characters movement when a controller is used. In addition,  I had to rig a completely new hand for the character as the auto rig did not achieve this. I then parented this up to the rig itself. Tomorrow , I will continue to weight paint and start blocking out the walk cycle for the character .
Day 3 - Character performance workshop with Sarah Perry
In todays character performance session. We recorded reference video for the performance to establish key beats and posing for the characters. I found that this was instrumental in developing my idea. I had previously recorded a scenario of a news reporter and a member of the public. The member of the public would mimic the reporter and exaggerate the movements of the reporter before the reporter notices him. By having a bigger performance area it was better to establish framing for the characters as I wanted a character in the foreground and a character in the background to the left. The character in the foreground would take up the most of the frame to show that he is the focal point.I am looking forward to develop the performance of the character and begin the animation process.
Day 3 - open media lab session
Today I was able to finalise the rigging process. I finished the weight painting of the character. This was a painstaking process due to me not understanding the fundamentals of the mechanic at first. I had to paint weight back on ti each of the joints after testing the rig by moving limbs to areas I could use in the walk cycle. This process also helped how to establish any flaws in the topology as more edge loops were needed around specific joints like the knee and elbow. This is because pinching appeared around the back of the knee and the topology was going inside of itself. Furthermore, around the shoulder the weight under the strap had to be adjusted as it was being pulled by the chest. This caused it to cave in . I am looking forward to completing the walk cycle of my character as I feel I have rigged well.
Day 4 - The reflective essay
In the essay discuss how you would animate the script
Demonstrate a range of research
Explore relevant books, films, images, digital resources and critical texts
In your essay:identify the potential challenges of filming your script and how you would overcome them. Discuss how and why you revised and redrafted your creative work.
On your blog show your creative development from start to finish, e.g writing exercises, character profiling, beat sheet, outline etc.
In your essay reflect on the potential challenges of filming your script.
Demonstrate an understanding of screenplay style simple, clear, visual.
Follow the basic rules of screenplay format
Tone and style: your reflective essay
You should write in an appropriate academic tone- citations and bibliographies required
However this is a reflective essay, can use first person and write about your own experiences as relevant to your creative process.
The reflective essay: 1000 words
Don’t explain Jekyll and Hyde
Don’t explain the task
Explain how your screenplay was inspired by the set text - themes ,transformation, names and characters, genre and particular lines incidents , images from the book.
Discuss your writing process- reflect on your journey from the first idea to the finished script- introduce evidence of wider research.-

Weekly summary 6
Dynamics
I felt this week was very helpful, in that it increased my skills in animating in TV Paint and with walk cycles, even though I need to practice more on the forward facing walk cycle and how to do the distance perspective with the legs and arms to make it more life-like. With this week’s lesson I decided to do a forward facing walk cycle for Character Design, hopefully it will come out as well as I want it too, so I will practice more at home.
Also, in terms of the Dynamics exercise we were set, I have already decided on which topic the animation will be set, and will begin to find references that match my idea.
Character Research
I’m glad we did finally look into Harvard Referencing more, as the last lecture confused me slightly, as we only looked at it briefly. This weeks lecture however was just 3 hours of it, which was good, as it answered some of my questions, like ‘how do we cite’ and ‘what do we put in the bibliography’. It was a really useful and helpful lecture, and I will be using my notes a lot for my essay when it comes to writing up the bibliography. I will also look back at the powerpoint once it is uploaded to double check. This week I shall try and find some good and helpful sources for my essay.
Character Design
This weeks character designing lesson was great, as not only did we do some more digital work, which is my favourite, but I also got to use a Cintiq for the first time and it was an amazing experience and I hope I get to use it more in the future, as it was so much easier than the separate tablet and screen because the lines are more accurate. I also got to play around with Egberts colour scheme, which was helpful as I now have the basic skin tone and the type of colours his clothes will be.

Week 6 Evaluation
3-11-2017
This week we focused on working digitally. We were introduced to Photoshop CC which we used to draw different iterations of our own characters. I really enjoyed this; I’m already familiar with digital drawing programmes so it was fun to learn how to use a new one.
We were asked to create different walk cycles using TV Paint - I found this quite challenging as it was my first time animating a walk cycle digitally.  Using different templates made it easier to visualise each frame of the front-facing walk cycle, and perspectives were easier to convey through the addition of shading in areas wherever necessary such as the lower leg as it falls behind the rest of the body after a step is taken. I also created a side-view walk cycle of my character, and while it is a rough animation, the movement isn’t smooth enough and likely requires more in-between frames.

Week 1 Summary
29/09/18 - Weekly Summary
This week was a fun, informative and practical week. We were introduced to DragonFrame which we used to create our first pendulum swings, using balls and coins. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the hand drawn pendulum swings, but I have complete those in my spare time. We were also introduced to our first essay centred around character.
Having not animated pendulum swings in the past, it was good to be working as part of a group to begin with, as we could learn and advice each other on what we thought was working and what wasn't. Our group was quite successful in establishing how the swing would take shape, and because of this factor, what I had learned from the group, I could in turn, apply it to my hand drawn pendulum swings. Bearing in mind these factors, I feel I had a very successful week, and an enjoyable one at that!
I feel my understanding for the fundamentals of animation are growing. What I have learnt from pendulum swings, I can take into future animations. I have a better idea of timing and speed, and how to document that over a certain number of frames. The concepts for pendulum swings are relative to life, so I can only take positives from the exercises this week.
As this was my first time animating, I can explore how different pendulum swings might take shape and how they might develop based on different physical properties of a ball. The journey has just begun!

Week 20 Evaluation
16-5-19
Extension week. I spent the entirety of this week catching up on the other projects that had been forced aside due to the visual essay group project.
I managed to complete all three animated loops in one day; once I’d gotten used to animating in After Effects again, it was a nice and quick process. I also created moodboards and storyboards as per the submission requirements in the same day, meaning I finished all of the animated loops requirements early on this week. I enjoyed this project as although I didn’t have a lot of time to work on it (even with the extension), it did push me to work a lot quicker than I usually do.
As for personal branding, I’ve been working on my website on and off all week in the evenings. I finally got round to creating a showreel later on in the week, which I put on my website. This project has been good practise for establishing myself online as an artist - it’s something I’ve been meaning to do again for a long time but never had the confidence to do so, so this was a good form of motivation.
I’ve been doing research for the professional practise project for a few days this week and managed to get the essay done within a few hours. Since it’s a proposal, it didn’t require a huge deal of research as it contains mostly on what I’m intending on writing about in year 3 and the different forms of research I’ll be doing; it’ll definitely be helpful when the year 3 research reports roll around as I’ll already have a solid idea of what I can write about and what to do in terms of research.
