#Within-the-Loop

I haven't been doing much with the perytons because I'm very unsatisfied with their design, but here's something for you: the inhabitants of Within-the-Loop, the ancient megastructure they live on, have siblings!

There have been a few other planets discovered within the Milky Way Galaxy which host life-forms with markedly unusual biochemistry that all arose at around the same time (~5 billion years ago). Each uses a different solvent, and some are boron- or metal oxide-based instead of carbon-based. (No silicon-based life-forms, though.)

All of the planets hosting them orbit K-type stars, and upon closer inspection all have some sort of self-maintaining artificial structures, invariably including a supercomputer which periodically manufactures and sends out semi-autonomous bots to survey the biosphere. It seems the creators simply wanted to see how much was possible regarding synthetic life.

Perytons are the only sophonts among this collection, though. Indeed, the life of Within-the-Loop is by far the most complex — the life on most of the other planets never got past the prokaryote stage, and the second most complex biosphere after Within-the-Loop is comparable to the early Paleozoic.

I originally created Roisia in Divinity: Original Sin, which had some phenomenal (and/or phenomenally corny) combat barks, so I came up with some more for her to shout in Baldur's Gate 3 to keep with tradition. UwU

To do with the isat curtain call au... what if loop is like those two muppets that constantly critise the acts, but the audience get a laugh out of it, so everyone just lets it happen?

I REALLY LIKE THAT AND CAN SEE THAT HAPPENING AT SOME POINT... Loop at some point probably participates in pantos and such- stuff that provides space for audience participation. But it's weird to everyone because they don't know Loop is up there but the usual booing and remarks aren't coming from the audience always??? If they're feeling so bold during intermission they may provide some insights but honestly nothing that disrupts the actual play nor exposes where they are. As much as they crave the attention (and they do, they hate that they do but they do) they would dislike even more to cause issues with the actual play. They may be a star but still! They've had enough of the spotlight. So they'd first need to tell the others they're there (and that they're real) to really participate.

(from here on there are technically 2hats spoilers interwoven in!) And at this point in the little bits of story I do have, nobody else other than Siffrin seems to know that they're there, and Loop intends to keep it that way. They don't want to interact with the others, it seems. And... they don't think they're deserving to ever have that sort of interaction again, even if they got the chance. Which they don't want. Obviously. Totally. Completely. (me when I lie....). Either way, Loop isn't ready to face the rest of them. It's painful to see people who you know and care deeply about... and feel like you know they'd never look at you the way they once did.

For now they just pass their notes to Siffrin who can pass it on to the rest of the crew! Teehee~ They're just the friendly spirit of the theatre!

Cableflowers are one of the most common species on the outer surface of Within-the-Loop (the peryton megastructure). They belong to a specialized clade of electrosynthetic organisms which use internal piezoelectricity rather than feeding from external sources: they generate it by letting the strong winds outside the structure whip them around, which makes their internal crystalline structures grind together (they quickly regenerate).

A lot of Within-the-Loop’s organisms have evolved to incorporate large amounts of various metals into their biology, due to their extreme abundance in the environment. Cableflowers use copper to reinforce their stems, preventing them from simply being snapped by the wind. (The planet’s winds are not as extreme as those of the Solar System’s gas giants, but they are still very fast and forceful.) They obtain most nutrients via carnivory, mainly feeding on magnetic spiders (not shown here).

Despite the name given to them by humans, cableflowers are anatomically more similar to sea anemones than any type of Earth plant. The “flower” contains their sole digestive orifice as well as their reproductive organs, and their stem ends in a suction pad instead of a root network. However, they do have one major similarity to flowers: they reproduce via pollination.

Airplane slugs (so named by humans for their appearance) are another common species on the outer surface. They often crawl inside cableflower “buds” to feed on the spiders they catch. When the cableflowers are ready to reproduce, they make sticky packets of gametes that the slugs pick up and hopefully deliver to the next cableflower. (Like all Within-the-Loop organisms, the flowers are isogamous, and they have several mating types - each of which can reproduce with any other type, which greatly increases the chances that the slug will find a partner with which gamete combination is possible.)
