Justin grabbed Zeke's hand. He swallowed back the sudden need vomit in his throat as his body drifted closer to Zeke's. Their shoulders brushed while his eyes scanned the crowd. When they got off the plane, he had finally been able to access his messages -- including the short, cryptic one from Thomas that stated there would be a change of plans. Justin didn't know why this all made him so anxious, but he supposed it was related to the man beside him. His fiancé.

The feeling reminded him of when they traveled to visit Zeke's family. In a way, this was also Justin's first time meeting his own. It really had been that long.

Suddenly, Thomas drifted into view. Justin's eyes widened, and his fingers squeezed Zeke's. The other Shepard hasn't noticed them yet. It gave Justin time to stare. Thomas' attire was simple : a loose t - shirt, old brown bomber jacket, and jeans tucked into his boots. That military surplus look was what Justin had expected. What he wasn't prepared for was the age in Thomas' face and gray through his ponytail.

"That's my ... twin," Justin said, nodding his head toward Thomas. As if Zeke couldn't guess. "That's Thomas." In spite of this, he made no motion to go toward him. His feet were suddenly frozen to the floor.

Zeke packed light for their journey, having nothing but a suitcase, a backpack, and a box full of assorted cake slices from Chinatown's Flouring Cake Shop he'd held tenderly on his lap through the plane ride. In a way, he thought it was funny he'd never visited the East Coast before moving away from Florida, but no reason could ever be as compelling as meeting Justin's family.

The invitation had come so suddenly he'd had to postpone filming one of his (pornographic) westerns. But choosing between spending his holidays with Justin's family instead of at an air-conditioned set was a no-brainer. Filming could always be rescheduled, but meeting his fiancé's family for the holidays might never come again if it turned out they hated his guts.

Feeling Justin's hand in his own, Zeke turned to look down at him in curiosity. It almost looked like Justin was as nervous as Zeke felt. As he followed his gaze, however, both his brows reached up for the high fucking heavens-- even without Justin's description, he was pretty sure he could tell who his fucking twin was.

"Whoa." There were differences in a lot of ways, of course, but it was astounding how identical they looked in the face. Zeke blinked a couple of times in an innocent attempt to process it all-- did Thomas have those red eyes, too?

He dipped his head low again, nudging at Justin's temple with his nose. "Shouldn't we go to him, baby?

"C'mon. He wouldn't come all this way if he didn't wanna see you."

Drawing their joined hands up, Zeke kissed Justin's knuckles (lips brushing, just for a second, woefully close to the elegant red ruby on his engagement ring).

"I'll punch him if he acts like a dick, I promise." He was only half-joking, too.

they aren't his to watch over anymore  ––  in this life, they have family  &  friends that weren't eaten by titans, weren't destroyed by the monsters that had dictated their survival for so long. they aren't soldiers underneath his watch  &  never will be again; yet somehow levi still feels responsible when he sees the circles turn darker underneath eren's eyes, when he sees armin sitting alone  &  lost in thought, in the amount of paperwork that he has stacked next to him in the small cafe. 

they may not be the same kids that he had known, that he had watched grow into men on that island, but they are still dear to him. it's almost painful to realize that; that these strangers, the ones that he should've readily pushed away  &  favored for a new life because he could, somehow are still near  &  dear to his heart. it's like he can't outrun the connections that he had once had on paradis  ––  &  sometimes he's not sure if that's for better or for worse. there are so many things that could have changed but it seems some of the puzzle pieces wanted to make themselves known  ––  &  he would be pressed to turn away from them when they're so vibrant right in front of him. 

he thinks of farlan  &  isabel,  &  the fact that he loves them both so dearly, that he gets to love them so dearly now. it's not just the presence of the kids that he had helped raise that commits him to shepard, but those that he hadn't been able to save that does as well. because like it or not, he is linked to zeke,  &  in turn he is linked to eren in this life because he had given him a job when he was looking to pave his own way.  &  he had stood by  &  watched him fall in love with armin, something that he hadn't been permitted to do in the last life,  &  some part of him feels like a monster for wanting to protect armin's heart from him in this one. 

eren didn't get to grow green like verdant pastures  &  meadows in the wake of the titans extinguishing themselves. he had grown brown  &  destroyed himself with rot  &  hatred because he had been corrupted by the very beings that had been both their saviours  &  their downfall. he had had to watch as mikasa  &  armin  &  even jean grew weary of the person that they had once known; he had watched as armin took colossal in his hands  &  shouldered the weight because the world asked it of him. because they couldn't rely on eren  ––  instead they had to fight him.

he had watched armin blossom into someone that even erwin would've been proud of; speaking of diplomacy  &  advocating for eldians. he had been a prime subject of military elegance, someone who had readily spoken  &  denounced what had happened on the island, had made himself an ally instead of an enemy.  &  he had watched as mikasa became recluse on the island, how she hid away with that scarf  &  the view of the tree, promising to keep sentry in only the way that ackerman's are foolish enough to.

he thinks they're cursed, really; there's no neon welcome sign of new love or lieges  ––  instead, they are damned to watch their loved ones fade into a titan'd rampage of horrendous deception until there is nothing left, until there is just an empty hole in a heart where a person had once occupied. 

even if they move on, it isn't the same. even if the ackerman descendants aren't a thing anymore, even if the powerhouse that he had once been was quieted by the titans being taken away, it doesn't matter  ––  there is still an echo of it in his chest, no matter how many times he strives to step away from it. 

armin is not ackerman  ––  he's too smart, too reliant on his brain in order to be one. they are nothing but brute force  &  gritted teeth, doing whatever it is they must in order to destroy everything around them to ensure that their liege is safe. but he thinks that in that way, armin is the same as them too  ––  that he looks at eren as something that needs tender love, that needs saving.  levi remembers he had looked at erwin that way once too  ––  &  had quickly been reminded that things are never as they seem on the surface, that erwin never wanted to be saved  ––  he wanted nothing more than to drown.

he doesn't think that eren is at that point yet. he doesn't think that eren is ready to call it quits  &  give himself over like he had in a past life. but there is still part of him that knows the feeling all too well  &  wants to shelter armin from it, even if it is not his place, not his crown to carry on his head.

still, he concedes to questions because armin is owed that  ––  &  because he knows how isolating it is to be alone with the memories, with the thoughts, to look at everyone around you  &  wonder if they see you or if they see this new, shiny version. if they look at you in discontent because they know you are made for so much more  &  instead of achieving it, you press yourself into the spaces that don't feel good, that feel like you're meant to be in because molding yourself is better than this new, ugly skin that you realize that you wear. 

" i remember you in both ways  ––  a work-a-holic who doesn't seem to know when to stop, the diplomatic gestures of things that you shouldn't have to take on. "  a shrug of his shoulders as he brings his own tea cup to his mouth, savoring the bite of heat on his tongue as he contemplates. 

the thing about arlert is, is that he doesn't really change from one life to another. there is always diplomacy in his eyes in the same way that erwin has always had anarchy written in his own. there are some small, careful things that never seem to change when it comes to the details, to the brightness that settles  &  the way that he uses a silver tongue in order to ensure safety, in order to ensure the warmth of things that are around him. he remembers when arlert had been a kid, voice far too high  &  body too miniscule to want to do anything with, but he had kept fighting. he had put his entire life on the line for the sake of eren from the beginning  ––  &  he doesn't think it was an accident. 

some people are born with leadership in their veins. he thinks that armin has been one of them, carrying on the weight of everyone around him, burning diplomacy into his veins until he is nothing more than that  &  that alone. 

tongue presses against the inside of his cheek for a moment  &  he exhales out of his nose.  " i remember you as someone erwin  &  hange would've been exceptionally proud of in the end, because you helped bridge the gap in ways they never could have. you were reckless like erwin but just enough. you were patient like hange, but you lacked the craze look that they carried in their words  &  eyes. you became someone that was a powerhouse in your own right, that held their head high despite the damn sadness that was always there. "   levi's fingers press into the side of the tea cup for a moment to feel the cheap material that rests beneath. he's not foolish enough to have actual porcelain in a shop, especially with eren  &  his temper,  & admittedly his own.  " i remember you staring at a damn tree  &  thinking it would be enough to bring eren back. "

&  he remembers this part of him too, far too brightly  &  blaringly  ––  the part that protects eren at all costs. people think that mikasa was the one who did, but in reality it had been both of them; she was brute force  &  armin had been silver tongue. even now, he tries to put it to work, tries to stifle himself because he is too big in a space that isn't meant for him. he wonders haltingly if armin will ever outgrow it  ––  or if he'll always be destined to fill spaces where he shouldn't have to.

" the thing is armin  ––  you don't have to protect him anymore. you don't have to settle for him because it's muscle memory, nor do you have to put your heart on the line for someone who quite honestly, i'm not even sure has one some days. "  he's brutal in his honesty because he needs to be; as much as he adores eren, there is part of him that is always messy  &  loud  &  hates him for the fact that he had taken erwin away from him. that he had set up the dominos to fall in the exact way that they did for this same exact outcome. it's not his fault  ––  the attack titan was always a dooming sentence that loomed on a boy's head who was far too young for it, but it doesn't matter. 

there will always be a part of levi that hates him, no matter how small, for the way that erwin had escaped his grasp. how he had lost the last person who mattered to him because they stayed back to fend off the wall titans that he had deemed fit to walk. 

tongue presses into his cheek once more  &  grey eyes glance out the window, watch the glow of headlights as they line up at a stop light.   " you don't always need to be his keeper. you were born again for a reason,  &  that reason doesn't always have to be him. that's all i'm saying. "

because whether or not eren lost sight of those he cared about or not, armin is still a prime soul. he is still too good for himself  &  those around him  ––  he shines far too brightly  &  he has watched how that light has slowly begun to dim with eren's darkness constantly consuming the atmosphere around him. 

&  he thinks that even armin deserves more than that.

a cup of coffee turns cold at the corner of a paper stack of to-dos that remain largely untouched. the papers are kissed into purple saturation as evening light sneaks into the closed cafe, & armin hadn’t planned to overextend his stay.

the plan had been to keep with routine, even if eren weren’t here — the plan had been to claim the table closest to the window, to work from six to seven thirty, to smile, to give polite updates about eren’s welfare.

the plan had been to gloss over the way that armin is certain stale air gets caught in his lungs, in his bloodstream. he gets stuck in the fatigue & uncertainty that comes from drumming his fingers against the railing of the ferry to the eren’s mom’s house, from every time that night has already fallen by the time he drives back to his own apartment. eren will be joining him there in a few days, & armin keeps reminding himself that he should try to check his apartment for safety —

it’s another thing to add to a stack of to-dos. the pile will keep growing, & eren will fluctuate between moments of catatonia, moments of grief, moments of hysteria, moments where he will sink so deep into himself that he turns into a void, that he says hideous things like you’re choosing me because it’s easy, armin.

even if it’s an arduous choice, it is an easy choice to make. there is no path but the one that is already tread, & there is no path that is otherwise wanted. even it’s an arduous choice, it is selfish -

armin had never felt as though the path had been his, that he had a claim. there had been a night shared in a library, where eren & he had once faced each other in a worn library — they recognized each other as gods & felt a claim in that, but they had never been good at mortal claims.

armin had always been too good at a zealot’s martyrdom, & eren had been the root of everything. he was a part of everyone’s story, & so he had belonged to no one. those who could mourn reminisced on the clean- cut things he could have been — a married man, a family man. eren’s weakness had always been his heart, so it was easy to mourn a world in which his heart was his strength.

a stack of to-dos are a mountain, but they are not insurmountable. he can handle everything that he must —- but there is stale air in his lungs, stale air in the bloodstream. it might bubble, & it might burst. it might amount to nothing —- it’s hard to tell, when the memories have been like dominos today — a stream of disorientatio that highlights things he doesn’t remember forgetting.

of his back against the wall. of fists. of unsolicited wandering hands. of the barrel of guns. of his hand clasping eren’s before he had died the first time, before he had come back to life. of molten indifference arguing against religious ideals. of resentment & loss that promised he would never stop moving —-

nuclear energy comes through the accomplishment of the unnatural. atoms are split, & they are condemned into movement. the release of energy follows, it is not always catastrophic.

armin had inherited the colossal, & then stood separate from indifference when it fell. he thinks that maybe the price he paid was in nuclear energy settled against his ribcage, keeping him hostage. so he would never stop moving —

still, he hadn’t planned on staying past closing. he hadn’t planned to get caught in his lapse of memories like dominos —-

armin realizes his mistake when levi sets a muffin in front of him, sets a mug of tea in front of him that armin recognizes as chamomile. he breathes an apology & already starts to tuck away his stack of to-dos.

the plan had been to keep with routine, even if eren weren’t here — the plan had been to claim his table closest to the window, to work from six to seven thirty, to smile, to give polite updates about eren’s welfare because he knows levi remembers too, that levi worries too.

he thinks that levi might be a little like him — rattling from the aftershocks of the first life, casting sideways glances over the shoulder as though that would be enough to predict when catastrophe would emerge. it’s only something he had learned to recognize after years of restlessness.

the stack of to-dos get stowed away. the muffin is still there, & the tea is still there. even if armin can’t stop moving, he can be slowed by stale air that makes him feel to heavy—

so a confession escapes him : he wasn’t an easy person to like, but he was an easy person to love.

the confession feels like something unbidden. panicked, armin’s gaze flicks towards levi, thinking of another apology on his tongue —but he settles instead, & smiles his remorse.

‘ eren is a like a black hole, ‘ armin agrees. he always had been, & he had never been alone. even if his company had failed him, he had never been alone. he still isn’t alone now.

armin draws his finger around the rim of the tea mug. he thinks of everything he could say, everything he won’t say, he thinks of everything that he might do, everything that is needed of him.

after the world had ended, arlert evolved into a type of erraticism — he had been the named commander of a corps that no longer needed to exist as an exploratory unit, that instead had been repurpose to facilitate a nation’s survival & diplomacy.

he had been repurposed. it’s the rite of passage, he supposes, for any of the commanders —- because he had followed hange, who had been repurposed from scientific curiosity into warfare’s innovation. because he had followed smith, who had been repurposed from intellectual curiosity into conspiracy & insurgency.

memories like dominos today has guaranteed to him that he remembers every way that he had been at the end —- remembers every way that he recognizes old erraticism in the present version of himself, recognizes everyone he tried to be.

levi offers him food & drink. armin remembers him as a mentor. he remembers him, too, as the comrade that he had known for decades after the end of the world —-

in fairness, armin doesn’t think that levi had ever resented him for the day that he survived. but he wonders, sometimes, if levi resented the person that he grown into — erraticism meant that he was a gross distortion of smith, of hange, of himself.

& still, levi acts as a mentor in this world. he concedes too kindly that it had taken him a month to process memories of erwin smith before he had chosen him again —

armin wants to protest that erwin smith hadn’t meant sin to levi. that erwin smith hadn’t been at the heart of global trauma. he wants to protest that none of it mattered — the path was already set. even it’s an arduous path, too, it is selfish —

there was never any choice but to choose this, but to choose eren.

armin’s finger traces another circle against the rim of his tea mug, & he has to ask —- ‘ how do you remember me? the way you remember eren, or do you remember me after? ‘

the question is an impulse that he shakes away. his laugh isn’t forced, but it’s hollow. armin peels paper away from the muffin & picks at crumbs.

Last Song Listened To: It was either Bite Me by Avril Lavigne or Tantrum by Charlotte Sands, can't remember lol.

Last Movie: I thiiink it was John Wick 3? We've been watching the John Wick movies after my partner learned I'd never seen them.

Craving: More sleep. I don't need more sleep but I really want more sleep. Also been really wanting some pickles/salty stuff the last few days.

What are you wearing rn? PJs/lounge clothes still! Flannel pj pants, black sweatshirt, and fluffy white blanket.

How tall are you? 5'6!

Piercings: I have my ears pierced, which only happened over the summer lol. I'd love to maybe get another piercing in each ear but don't feel inclined enough to go do it yet.

Tattoos: I have one! It's on my inner left bicep and its Mt Washington/the presidential range of the White Mountains with the Orion constellation above the peak. It's got some personal meaning to it but also just liked the way it looked. In theory I want at least one more tattoo, I want to shards of Narsil somewhere on my body but I can't decide where (Well, it makes most sense in my brain to get it on my inner forearm but I don't know if I want it there).

Glasses/contacts: Neither!

Last Drink: Technically water but I'm going to go make myself some earl grey tea with a splash of coffee (its really good, saw it on MorganDrinksCoffee's youtube channel).

Last Show: Uhh...I think it was an episode of The Circle on Netflix over dinner Sunday night because it was a stressful weekend and we just needed something super chill and ridiculous to watch.

Last thing you ate: I got dinner at Culvers last night because I wanted a salted caramel milkshake lol. And their cheese curds (Thank you midwest/south for introducing me to Culvers)

Favorite Color: Kinda swings around between a deep plum purple and a burgundy color.

Current Obsession: Still teetering on the obsession edge of Cyberpunk 2077, though its not got as much of a choke hold on me as it has the last like...two months. Elden Ring is lurking in the background menacingly.

Unrelated Obsession: The Exiled Fleet series by JS Dewes has taken root once again because her new book Rubicon comes out today. So I've been consuming a lot of recorded interviews/con panels/ect in anticipation.

Any Pets: In this household: one menace tuxedo cat pulled from a dumpster in Texas (Blasto) and my poor cinnamon roll of an orange maine coon mix (Atlas).

Honorary mention is Zeke, the 120lbs golden german shepard mix that was a stray down here last summer and I fell in absolute love with but couldn't feasibly adopt, who now lives with my parents up in New England lol.

Favorite Fictional Character: HMM way too many to count tbh. Aragorn is probably the longest running fictional character because hooo boy. Can I say female V from Cyberpunk? I think the voice acting for her was done phenomenally. But if I had to choose from not toeing the OC line, probably Adequin Rake from the Last Watch (Js Dewes).

Last Place Traveled: Not counting the city for work or like...~moving~ out here probably to the other side of Kentucky to visit in-laws before I moved out of state. Or maybe back home to NH over the summer? Depends on technicalities of "travel" lol.

Cool? Debatable, stories? Many. Zeke has a multitude of scars ranging from being cut on a fence after a miscalculated move during a brawl with his friends at home, to scars from aggressive rams who feel like he was moving too quick, to slash scars from their many battles with the Shepard squad.

Do they have a comfort food?:

Yes! Ember's favorite would have to be white chiken chili. Her family has a cook but her mom had taught her once, when ember was young, how to make it. She always insisted to help her mom make it every year on her birthday. It makes her think of being warm(er) during a cold day, she loves spici food and this definitely hit the mark!
