Zhuang Zhixing was having the worst day of his life.

The aches, the pains, the endless gruelling training, the constant mud caked on his face, his arms, his clothes, his legs. The humiliation of being the Duke’s son.

He knew why he was here, and the promise that he’d made.

But it still didn’t make days like this any easier.

He collapsed onto a bench in his quarters, too tired even to pour himself some tea.

There was always the temptation, wasn’t there? To give it all up and go home. Forget his revenge, his mother, his hatred, his ambitions. Go back to what he was.

He covered his eyes with his hand. Maybe this time—- 

“Zhixing, you have a visitor.”

He sat up, surprised. “I do?”

“He’s in the guest tent.”

He dragged himself out of the chair and out of his quarters. No time to rectify his bedraggledness now, whoever it was will have to make allowances.

He parted the door curtains to the guest tent.

A man was seated primly at a table, his hands folded neatly on his lap, a lacquered food box by his side, and a mild expression on his face.

“Xian sheng!” Zhixing exclaimed, as he bowed in greeting.

Instantly, the skies seemed to brighten, and a smile formed on his lips.

Maybe one day he would give up.

But not today.

Legend of Zang Hai episode 14 thoughts

The opening scene brings back episode 2 and the scene with Master Liuchu. Still awkward with women, trying so hard to be respectful while Xiang Antu has no shame.

How the frick did Lu Jin kill that many men all by himself? But then couldn't handle Xiang Antu. I wasn't expecting her to do it herself, she's good.

This is were we get the beard and mustache disguise! I have to say I laughed pretty hard when he showed up looking like that.

I'm starting to see more chemistry between Zang Hai and Xiang Antu. They seem to clearly enjoy bantering, and appreciate each others wits. She has started to grow on me and I really appreciate that.

Madam Jiang is vile, trying to ruin a rare moment Zhuang Zhixing has with his father. Poor boy. She makes my blood boil.

Cao Jingxian is really scary, he really can do whatever he wants without consequences. Probably even more so than the Marquis. But as entertaining their performance was, as the Marquis and Lu Jin, how will they explain it? That Zang Hai was seen with Lu Jin. And that the Marquis seemingly was with him the whole night, if he himself ends up denying it? And what did the letter say? How is this supposed to make Zang Hai look less suspicious?

Legend of Zang Hai first impressions

I like Zang Hai so far. Xiao Zhan is a good actor, although it took me a while to stop associating him with wwx. Kid who is talented and confident of his abilities but gets thrown into the real world and finds out that so many things is out of his league is my favourite trope and this is Zang Hai in a nutshell at least in the introduction.

Not sure what Xiang Antu's deal is yet. She almost got a stranger killed, and not just because she was so so keen to save her friend the real Ba Gongzi but she was also having a lot of fun watching him run for his life. wtf. This could lead to some interesting characterisations but i'm not sold on her character yet

Excited to see what the deal with Zhuang Zhixing is. I can think of a few ways they can write him and all of them are fun.

Ngl the dynamics in the marquis manor is interesting as hell to watch. This could be an iconic piece of tv if the writing continues to be good.

I adore Gao Ming and Zang Hai's relationship so far. Tbh he seems like the only one out of ZH's mentors who's emotionally well-adjusted. Like yeah it's impt to teach your kid not to get emotionally attached if he's about to embark on the world's hardest assassination mission but it's also a nice idea to give the kid a safe space if he's going to be working for the guy he's trying to kill everyday.

Seriously though. Episode 11 was so intense. I mean, we already caught a glimpse of how intelligent Zhuang Zhixing actually is in the earlier bath scene, but this time whoa he really really got Zang Hai. My heart nearly stopped 😵 I thot one of them was gonna die right there, and then ZZX showed his true colours i.e. a kind heart!!! So unexpected...gar... It's really making me question whether ZH's motives are right in the first place.

Ahhhhh I really cannot guess where this story is going and can't even binge it.... And the Miss Xiang and Mr Eight backstory makes me wanna die 😵 how are all three of their fates so intertwined

i love how zang hai yaps and yaps and yaps about how everyone is underestimating zhuang zhixing and how he has more potential than his older brother actually and then immediately underestimates zhuang zhixing himself. boy you are so bad at this revenge plot 🫶

Thoughts on Legend of Zang Hai eps 25-28 (roughly).

So. Much. Drama.

Even as shattered as Zang Hai looks, things are coming up aces for our boy. The way his trying to kill Zhuang-senior worked out probably went as best as it could -- in one sense. Because mostly it was Zhuang-senior and Jiang Xiang doing it to themselves, the one bribing his kid's way through the military exam and the other ready to scuttle the entire ship rather than see herself and her kid shoved into steerage. There were a couple of nudges in there -- the suggestion that a second-rank son might have trouble with getting good assignments, leading to the promotion of the dead wife and thus Jiang Xiang's shit-fit, and also switching the prison letter stirred everything to violence. But Zhuang Zhixing didn't see any of those nudges. He got to see Zang Hai flagrantly worried about his personal safety and then he chose to ride into the bloodbath and chose to fight his dad as the only way to keep the Zhuang bloodline in its entirety from dying. It's gonna feel like a lot of agency for him. Probably the only way that he'd end up both alive and not actively hating Zang Hai.

But damn, so many more people died than if Zang Hai had just poisoned the shit in prison. The rank and file soldiers -- do their lives not matter?? Which reminds me... back when Jiang Xiang poisoned the tea, she told her daughter-in-law to drink as well. But when they talk about it later, they only mention mother and son. Did the young lady choose not to drink off-screen, or is it just that she's not important enough to mention? I may need to rewatch, because I'm worried it's the latter.

... I think, as masterful as Zang Hai's manipulations were, there was another layer going on from Iron Mask Scholar. Who continues to fascinate me -- I'd wondered if he'd taken on Gao Ming's identity, then saw them both together.... but then I just read another tumblr post that suggested there was a different actor behind the mask in his last appearance. So....?

I assume we'll be seeing more of the Dongxia tribe soon. It's good that Zang Hai gets to know his future employers, yeah? (I'm with Master Liuchu -- if he doesn't treat Xiang Antu right I'm going to give him such a smack.)

God fucking dammit. Her name was Yuerou. She did indeed drink the poison she was told to, like a good little girl, and absolutely no-one reports her death. Not to the emperor, not to Zhuang Luyin.

Does Zang Hai know she was one of the casualties? This mild-mannered little girl? Does he care???

Rage. Rage like flames on the side of my face, burning...
