Exotics/Hostile Races In The City

Pros and Tips

• Have A Solid Reason For Being In The City

Maybe your demon got summoned in the city and is trying to find their way back home? A gnoll could be selling trinkets and bobbles in the black market to provide for their tribe. An undead could be picking away at the poor population for food or bodies.

Having a good reason for being in the city makes your character feel more believable and more palatable. Plus, you can use it as a roleplay hook.

• Hangout In Lesser Known Spots

A Gnoll or demon lurking in an alleyway or haunting the graveyard is way cooler and impactful than say one having a shot at the tavern.

Think about where your exotic would feel most comfy when not in the city. They may try to replicate that feeling.

• Disguises

I know a lot of people hate disguises and ask “what’s the point of playing an exotic anyways?”. As someone who rped with a lot of disguised demon rpers, it’s honestly super cool when you DO find out or it’s revealed.

Disguises speak on your characters cunning and intelligence. How easily are they caught? Is it a funny one? A serious one? What’s the purpose and persona of their disguise.

Give people a chance to figure it out. It’s really rewarding in rp for both parties.

• For Evil Exotics

Every rper and character is different, but some exotics have very distinguishable behaviour. Yes, there are exceptions but it’s gotten to the point that everyone is the exception. If you’re writing a traditionally evil race (nagas, gnolls, undead, demons, etc etc) maybe try actually making them evil! Be the bad guy! It’s fun! It’s really jarring at times seeing this genocidal demon talk about loving hugs, sunshine and drinking with their friends when galaxies have fallen to these creatures and literally drove a Titan mad.

That being said, people can also change and grow. Ask yourself what would change this generational trauma and cycle of evildoing for your character?

There’s so much potential and writing with those topics and you can craft a really lovable character with this. Think of Minthara from BG3, Zuko from A:TLAB, or any other characters from media who came from traditionally evil environments and became good guys.

• For Neutral Exotics

This is for exotics that aren’t exactly “evil” but are in a weird grey area due to lore or history (centaur, vrykul, ogres, nerubians, etc). It is VERY IMPORTANT to be able to denote the different factions, tribes and clans for neutral exotics, as many neutral exotics have an enemy version attached to them. Neutral Exotics are on shaky footing, their presence will probably make people feel uncomfortable because of said evil faction. Take this into account and decide if your exotic is of the neutral or evil faction for their race (if evil see above).

Read up on the different factions within the race: know which ones are more hostile. Be ready to defend or shun your clan!

This gives you a chance to share lore too when these conflicts are brought up.

• For Good Exotics

Exotics that have been canonically confirmed to be good and allies (dragons, dryads, tuskaar, etc). Maybe you helped out in one of the many world conflicts: think of the events that have happened around your exotic. They could have even helped the alliance or horde, giving you a connection and hook for them.

Dryads could know druids, from the Dream or living world. Tuskaar could know people from the Northrend Campaign and Dragon Isles. Ask why they would fight for or have interest in non-exotics and leave their comfy home even after. How strong is their bond?

Im glad you all liked the first set of tips. Here’s another. Again, not rules just tips to help those who may be anxious to make an exotic or struggling with walk-ups due to being one.

Respectfully, I completely disagree with your interpretation of Omi and Fung's relationship. And I mean respectfully. Complete /gen. It's just interesting how two people can walk away from a show seeing such different things.

I never picked up on any hostility like you talk about. (In my brain, I am legit confused why you think Fung dislikes Omi. Lol!)

In my viewing I saw 1.) Fung holding Omi to a higher standard of behavior because he's been at the temple longer and shouldn't need a relearn certain things while the others are learning some of these expectations for the first time. and 2.) Fung refusing to play favorites while in charge of training. I always got strong "I'm not Mom at school." vibes.

Which could easily be a reaction to the other monks judging Fung for potentially being too soft on and emotionally invested in their choosen one because he raised him. Like A:TLAB, only instead of saying "Get bent!" like Monk Gyatso, Fung said "If I keep strict boundaries, can I still be his teacher?" But that's just conjecture.

Anyways, I just felt like throwing my two cents at you, cause clearly we had very different experiences with these characters.

No disrespect taken. When I watched growing up, I had also figured that Omi and Master Fung were close and had a father-son bond, especially off-screen. Master Fung always came off as stoic to me, so I assumed he was the type to love more subtly and quietly. After all, Omi was an orphan who grew up at the temple, so his master would basically be his dad in my mind!

I was surprised to come back to the series and see that there's so little warmth and so much tension in the relatively few interactions we actually do get between Master Fung and Omi.

Omi's got this really strong, really unrequited affection for Master Fung. While Master Fung seems surprisingly consistent in just... whatever this is. Even in their private moments.

When it's not that, it's both trying to be professional and dispassionate.

Master Fung grows a lot in the background over the course of the series. In particular, you can tell he regretted the tone with which he handled Raimundo at the beginning of the series. Master Fung actively takes the steps to be a more open person to them over time.

He strives to become better, in response to the others needing him to be better.

Master Fung has quite a few moment where he lets down his walls and shows a soft side.

It's simply never directed at Omi, from what we see.

He does break past the stoicism for Omi quite often, but what slips out in those moments is anger or annoyance.

I was so surprised that a relationship I had assumed was probably a pretty close father-son bond as a kid is a cold and stone-walled master-and-least-favorite-student thing in hindsight! It is definitely fascinating and explains a lot about Omi, though.

I'm completely in love with the NWT artwork from The Art of the Animated Series (original image here) so I thought I’d put some life into it!

This took me like 40 minutes and it was completely worth it. 

I love both Sokka and Zuko and this just feels like a conversation they would have. 

I’m really mad that the fonts aren’t the same but what can you do?

Ok so I just watched A:TLA for the first time a few weeks ago and I honestly can’t stop thinking about it. Like this is honestly one of my fave shows of all time. And I was thinking about how even though I love Zuko’s redemption arc, I was sad that he decided to go with Azula at the end of season two because one, he had started to change and see the good in himself and two, I wanted more episodes with him and the Gaang. But then I thought about it more and I realized why the writers did what they did. When Zuko went back with Azula, he got everything he wanted. He got his honor back, his girlfriend back, and most importantly the respect from his father. He even got a little more than that cuz his father thought he killed the avatar. But that is what makes his decision to leave and help Aang even more powerful. It’s easier to make the right decision when you have nothing to lose so if he had gone with the gaang at the end of season 2 it wouldn’t have cost him anything really. He was already on the run from Azula and his father. He did not have to give anything up. But during the Day of Black Sun, when he told his father that he was leaving by choice even though he had everything he possibly wanted, you knew he was doing it for the right reasons. It definitely was not the easier the choice. He chose to turn his back on everything that he was taught growing up and chose good. He learned from his mistakes and his conscience and Iroh helped guide him and showed him the good within himself. So all of this was just to say that Zuko really has one of the best character arcs in tv history and I’m obsessed with him.

Imagine an open world Avatar: The Last Airbender game, where each element is both a weapon and a mobility tool. Like using air to glide around, fire to "rocket" jump, earth to use momentum to roll around and water to surf around on lakes and rivers.

do any of you relate A LOT to some characters from atla? I’m gonna rant here about my thoughts since I’m too shy to do it on other sites where people personally know me. this is gonna be quite a long one, but I just need somewhere to let it all out so I’m not expecting any replies (but they are welcome haha)

so, after watching atla, it kinda hit me that I relate to azula more than I thought and it bothered me bc although I enjoyed her character, I also pitied her. turns out, I’m very much like her lmao. so, here it goes:

(1) I recently got into an argument with my parents and older sibling bc I was feeling jealous and pressured abt something (won’t go into details abt that). a little shouting later (yikes), my dad said he never realized I felt that way bc I was always the sibling who seemed so “put together.” I got higher grades, got awards in two sports for years, and didn’t have “problems” in those stuff like my older sibling, etc., so he and my mom didn’t support me too closely bc I seemed strong and independent enough to do them on my own (I’m not trying to brag lmao this is just what he told me agshags). so I guess that’s the first reason that makes me similar to azula — I was good at things that my sibling wasn’t.

(2) another reason was that I realized my parents favor my older sibling. during one part of the fight, they pointed out that she was always the nicer and kinder one and that I was selfish for a lot of things, one of them being that I pursued my interests for years (i.e. the two sports I mentioned) while she didn’t do that. it really bothered me bc my sibling was the one who never asked to do any sports or music classes or whatever in the first place, and I was only able to pursue what I liked bc I begged my parents to let me do it for years when I was a kid to the point that I was a late starter in those sports. but, apparently, they saw me doing something I was passionate about for most of my life as selfish and that it was an inconvenience to them. I suppose one difference with azula and zuko to my situation is that azula said only ursa favored zuko despite him not being a “prodigy”; on the other hand, azula felt that her mother saw her as monster — in my case, I think it’s both parents who feel that way about me.

(3) that fight kinda felt like a breaking point for me. I was crying and shouting and trying not to go crazy, and it’s scary how it was so similar to when azula cracked during her agni kai with zuko. so, here I am, on day 2 of not talking to my family, typing this whole rant on tumblr lmao.

(summary): even though I achieved more in school and extra-curricular activities (disclaimer: not an honor student or genius or anything but y’all get the picture lol), it turns out that I’m still not good enough for my parents. I realized that I may come off as meaner and more hardheaded compared to my nicer sibling, but I didn’t know that it was to the point that my parents favored them so much more than me. maybe I have anger issues idk lol, but either way, all my achievements mean nothing because they prefer my older sibling over me any day.

TL;DR — I relate to azula bc despite all my academic and sports-related achievements, my parents (not just my mother aka like ursa to zuko haha) prefer my older sibling way more than me (bonus: I also had a mini breakdown during my fight like azula did in her agni kai with zuko yikes)

P.S. I badly need therapy lmao. I can’t pay for it myself and idk if my parents will let me get any bc they’re too busy focusing on my older sibling who has issues too (nothing serious, but she asked for therapy way before I did). I feel like they’ll think I’m just seeking attention if I tell them I need help as well haha
