I am learning from the reblogs of this post that my approach of making a large amount of ill-advised google searches and deliberately Wikipedia rabbit-holing myself to the information I needed was not normal? Like, I do that for everything else, but also I have some knowledge from 11-year-old me that maybe I shouldn't have googled to find out...

Eh, it's fine. I'll just publish a novel and then if anyone asks what in the unholy hell was up with me, I'll be able to actually legitimately say 'research'.

loved being like 12 years old and making an OC and saying “yeah they’re a hardened criminal. they’re deeply involved in crime. they’re in a gang” and then never elaborating on that because i didn’t know how crime worked. this is still my approach

Ok, so imagine in some distant future point, where Damian is a doctor. He’s got his degrees, is a talented surgeon, and is working a night shift in the emergency room at one of the Gotham hospitals, when suddenly he’s getting paged because a patient - male, early 30s - is being rushed into surgery with an abdominal stab wound and injuries in line with falling from a height.

Now, contrary to popular belief, Damian - as a rule - never treats his family if he can help it. It’s a lot of pressure and none of the Gotham vigilantes want to put that on him. But as Damian stands in the ER, watching as Tim is wheeled in, he can’t help but shout out to the nurses that the patient is missing his spleen.

Now this obviously raises some questions, as a splenectomy isn’t something you can identify from a distance. So, of course, Damian invents some bullshit excuse about assisting Nightwing whilst in grad school, and getting to know the Bats that way. He hopes that’s the end of it, and trusts that his brother will be alright.

That is until the next time he gets paged about another patient - female, early to mid 30s, punctured lung - and is able to inform the surgeon of Steph’s allergies.

Slowly, Damian becomes his family’s emergency doctor every time they’re injured in such a way that requires proper attention. All of his siblings are deeply apologetic, but Damian can’t exactly tell his colleagues why his treating the injured vigilantes is a conflict of interest without blowing their cover.

But now, every time his pager goes off on his night off, calling him in for an emergency surgery, he can’t help but catalogue exactly who was supposed to be on patrol, pray for everyone to check in on the group chat, and worry that he is going to see his family with injuries he can’t treat.
