Possible story ideas for a potential TLOU3, if it happens:

Another Ellie story. I don’t know what they would do with another Ellie story because TLOU2 in my opinion seemed to be closing the chapter on Ellie’s story and I’m not sure if I trust Druckmann to put her through more hell and have her come out of it once again. If Ellie goes through more hell she’s gonna lose something else, or herself, and I don’t want to know what that will be. I like the open ending of TLOU2 where she found the closure she needed and doesnt fully lose herself so she’s still able to come back from it, and (hopefully) returns to Jackson and her family. They could do another time jump to JJ being around Ellie’s age in the first game with him as the main character and Ellie/Dina as additional main characters but with JJ as the focus. This would keep the ties to Ellie, who is the heart of TLOU, while moving forward to tell a new story instead of beating a dead horse by putting her through more misery. I would probably still buy an Ellie-centric part 3 game but I would be skeptical about it.

A Joel and Tommy prequel. Again, I wouldn’t be to keen on this because we have finished Joel’s story. We already know he did a lot of bad shit before he met Ellie. We know he was grieving after he lost Sarah. We know Joel and Tommy had a falling out a long time ago and Tommy joined the fireflies and Joel didn’t. We know all this. We don’t need to get into the nitty gritty because we know where Joel ends up. Not to mention, going from a game where the main characters are a lesbian, her bi girlfriend, a beefy ass woman, a trans Asian kid and his sister, to a game where the main characters are once again....two cis het white guys? Not interesting. I probably wouldn’t buy it but I might watch gameplay of it? I’m not sure what they would do with this to keep things fresh and unique, but Joel is a fan favorite and Sony/ND probably know this game would still cater to fans who hated the second game so it would definitely be a possibility.

My personal favorite option: continuing the story with Abby and Lev. These are two incredibly interesting and unique characters that continue to mirror the original story of Ellie and Joel, and they’re on a mission to find the Fireflies. There’s so much potential with these two moving forward and potential to learn more about the Fireflies in the fun, unexplored environment of Southern California (I may be biased being from SoCal but OH WELL. GIVE ME POST-APOCALYPTIC LOS ANGELES). They could do flashbacks to Ellie or even try to find her again if the Fireflies find out Abby knows where she might be, giving Abby the difficult choice of if she wants to try and protect this broken girl who tried to kill her or say fuck it and go all-in with the Fireflies again. It would provide inner conflict and exciting storytelling and that’s exactly what TLOU games are about! Unfortunately, Abby herself isn’t exactly a fan-favorite, and while people love Lev I’m not sure if Sony/Naughty Dog would want to bank on a risky choice even if it is the better storytelling option moving forward, especially if they would want to continue to make more games after 3, it would open the world to even more possibilities.

Another flashback option, and one I would actually be really interested in playing: Ellie’s mom. This is something that has direct ties to popular characters of the original game and would answer a lot of questions about Ellie’s parents. Who were they? What happened to them? Were Ellie’s mom and Marlene lovers? (The answer is Yes.) This option even has the potential for a Joel cameo if that’s what the people want. He knew Marlene, Tommy left him to join the Fireflies, and it’s quite possible Joel met Ellie’s mom without even knowing it. This prequel option would give them the chance to explore so many unanswered questions fans have while still sticking close to the heart of the original games, and especially with a Joel cameo, I think it would be a fairly popular idea. And because we know nothing about Ellie’s mom except that she dies and that she was close with Marlene, we have no expectations so Naughty Dog has the freedom to do whatever they want. It would be a tragedy, going in knowing that she doesn’t survive, but the storytelling they get out of it could be incredible! And as a bonus: Ashley Johnson could potentially still voice Ellie’s mom. It wouldn’t move the story forward but if they wanted to close it off with this prequel at the end of a three part series it would be a great bookend.
