Same Scene 3 Ways (Emotion, Physicality, Pacing, Genre)

A 2-person scene will play out based on a suggestion. These scenes shouldn’t be very long about 3 minutes or less. When the scene is over it will be played out again, but this time possibly with a different emotion, genre, speed, character, physicality, etc. When doing this exercise it depends on what you are working on but the 3 scenes can be a pacing exercise where you have the scene played normal, fast, and slow. Or  an emotions exercise where they play 2 different emotions after the 1st scene or it can be a mixture depending on what specific skill set you are working on.

Onion

A mid-length format that can be used for short or long form. Typically run with 5 players. It begins with a 1 person scene followed by a walk on that creates a  brand new 2 person scene followed by a  3rd person walk on that creates a third new scene and so on 1, 2 ,3 ,4 ,5 and then back down going back to scenes that have already happened as if time has passed so 1,2,3,4,5 and then back down 4,3,2,1 should be how scenes play out. Each of these walk ons should come at a regular editing point and once 5 players are in the scene the fifth person to enter will need to find a reason to leave the scene so that players can go back to the 4 person scene, then the 4th person who entered will find a reason to leave that scene and we will go back to the 3 person scene, then 2 person and finally the first person who started the piece will be edited by someone no longer in the piece calling the scene.  While playing, these scenes should try to be unique in use of status, characters, stage picture, etc. In general a good use in variety rather than multiple talking heads scenes in a row will keep the audience more engaged.

Strong Emotional Reaction To Nothing (Game, Emotion)

A regular 2-person scene will start based on a suggestion and within the first few lines of dialogue one player will have a strong emotion reaction to something that may regularly be of little importance.  So even if in the first line of dialogue one player was to say “I like dogs” or “The soup is hot” or anything, the other player will have a strong emotion reaction to it and play forward with that emotion. So if I said, “I like dogs” my scene partner might get upset or excited, or happy, sad, etc. When we put importance on things within a scene they become important, so a line of dialogue can be as simple or uninteresting as “It’s sunny out today”, but if my scene partner makes what I said important to the scene it will be important.

Character Painting (Character, Framing)

A backline of players will one at a time paint a single character into a scene and use object work as well as verbally tell what they are creating. So 1 player might step out and say “ We see a balding man with holes in his shoes and pockets”. Then another player would continue to frame this man possibly saying, “ He walks with a slight limp and carries a wooden cane”. A third player might say “ When he yawns he keeps his mouth open for too long”. And so on until this character has been painted by around 5ish players. Once this character has been created, someone from the backline can jump into this character and another person from the backline will be in a scene with this character. Usually this exercise works best when done with one person playing a character and the other more so the Voice Of Reason, but can be done where two characters are painted into the scene prior to starting the scene.

Whisky Mixer 

A fun energy fulled warmup with some articulation.

The Way it works: Get everyone into a circle. One person will start the warmup by passing the phrase “Whisky Mixer” to the right (or clockwise), to continue passing it right the person who “Whisky Mixer” is passed to will repeat “Whisky Mixer. To reverse it or pass it back to the left (or counter clockwise) the player it is passed to can sat “Misty Vista” So “Whisky Mixer” goes to the right and “Misty Vista” goes to the left. To pass across the circle, make eye contact with another player and say “Mr. Whiskers. 

So we have : Whisky Mixer (Right), , Misty Vista (Left) , Mister Whiskers (Across)

This warmup should be played quickly and we are not worried about messing up what is said we just want to keep passing the phrase, But if anyone is the circle laughs whether it is their turn or not they must run a lap around the circle. (Similar to many games where laughing is “punished” we encourage laughing as part of the game)
