he's on the roof of the ADA building, lying in the middle instead of near the edge. he's staring up at the sky, pondering how small he is in such a vast universe.

you were downstairs working when kunikida asked you to find dazai and make him go back to work. dazai tended to listen to you, after all.

you checked all of his usual spots--the couch, under his desk, under atsushi's desk, in the supply closet, in the cafe downstairs, and finally you went to the roof, hoping he wasn't sitting a hair's width from the edge again like he was the last time you found him up there.

when you open the door, you first notice that he's spread out on the ground with his head turned away from you and think maybe he's passed out--then you notice his hips buck up into his hand and his back arch up a little.

the wind carries the sound of his voice over to you, and you swear he just said your name.

"dazai?" you say meekly, and his head whips to the side, eyes wide in surprise as he sees you. he sits up quickly, turning away from you, using his coat to cover his crotch.

"um... kunikida... he wanted me to find you."

"...okay... please don't tell him what I was doing."

"I really, genuinely won't."

"...okay... do you, um... are you, um... did you hear what i, uh.. what i said when you... got here..."

dazai is a fair 7 of 10. i don't have a lot to say about him, but he most definitely gets jealous easily

kunikida is a 5 of 10. when he's with you and you get hit spoken to by someone else, he just takes control of the situation and leaves with you. obviously against your choices, but he doesn't trust you.

ranpo is a 6 of 10. doesn't get too worried about other guys because he knows you wouldn't go for anyone else other than the greatest detective ever, but when another guy flirts with you, he just feels the need to.. step in.

yosano is a 7 of 10. she doesn't mind when others speak to you, as long as they aren't flirting with you, and that's a loose term with her. asking for directions in a large mall could get someone's fingers chopped off if she was in a particularly annoyed mood.

fukuzawa is a 4 of 10. he doesn't care if people talk to you either, but flirting is off the table with him. even so, he'll just leave the area and take you with him, he can't just let some other guy talk to you, are you crazy?

akutagawa is a 8 of 10. if someone's making small talk or something he doesn't care, but even speaking to you or looking at you for too long is just like asking for him to beat them senselessly.

chuuya is a 8 of 10. like akutagawa, small talk doesn't matter to him. you're socializing, who cares? but he's absolutely jealous of your friends, especially your close ones. strangers, he can beat the shit out of those, but your friends? he can't do anything there, so he just sits in silence.

higuchi is an 9 of 10. she hates when anyone else talks to you, she just can't stand it. she'll openly tell you how much she hates it when other people beside her 'flirt' with you, and makes you promise not to hurt her like that again.

gin is a 3 of 10. she does get jealous of other people like your closer friends, but doesn't act on anything, just sits in silence. maybe she'll express to you she was jealous, but she won't hurt anyone unless they make advances on you

2) Love me by SapphireSunstone. Dazai gets hit by an ability that makes him fall head-over-heels for Chuuya, lots of chaos ensues.

3) What Is Being Human Anyway? by why_cant_turtles_fly. At 18, both Chuuya and Dazai leave the port mafia and travel the world for two years before settling back down in Yokohama.

4) A Well-Trained Dog by the_most_happy. An ADA Chuuya au with lots of Chuuya and Kenji bonding time, much to the distaste of a certain brunette.

5) Secrets and Trust by RavynAshes (IronScript). A relationship reveal where the Agency spot a usually concealed ring hanging on a necklace around Dazai's neck.

Ramblings about ending themes and theories why Chuuya doesn't appear in them;

With the exception of S3's ending which shows the whole cast connected to the Dead Apple movie, Chuuya has not appeared in an ending song.

S1 & S2 are connected, focus on SSKK and Dazai.

S4 focuses on Atsushi and daily life at the Armed Detective Agency, though we get SSKK and Dazai at the end.

S5 focuses on everyone with a major role but has a lot of focus with Dazai and Akutagawa's relationship

Again, this one is particularly interesting as Chuuya has quite a significant role in Season 5 with his involvement in Fyodor and Dazai's plans. Almost the entire ADA is there, the Hunting Dogs, and several confirmed members of the Decay of Angels.

One could argue it's because his involvement was meant to be a surprise however, unlike in S4, Taniyama Kishou (Chuuya's Seiyuu) is listed in the cast of characters so his appearance was not surprising.

S3 was omitted as it included everyone who appeared in Dead Apple and is essentially a clip show to market it. The endings I included have art or edited scenes connecting characters significant to the season or tell a story.

It's interesting considering Chuuya drives the plot each season in some way.

Season 1 was his introduction season and while he didn't move that plot significantly as Dazai knew already where to locate the files, we got some insights into Mafia hierarchy and a brief glimpse of the duo known as Double Black.

Season 2 was him at his most impactful. Not only did we get the infamous Double Black episode but Chuuya also revealed himself and information on the Guild to members of the ADA who didn't know him and was a crucial person for Atsushi to see that lead to their truce with Port Mafia.

Season 3 is interesting because we had the 15 arc prequel episodes but they do not impact the main plot.

Instead we get Chuuya forced into the role of Port Mafia boss that ends with him being outsmarted and taken off the playing field due to him being a threat the ADA would not likely be able to handle. They took him out as quickly as possible and we don't see him again until next season

Season 4 gave us crumbs of Chuuya but his involvement saved the Armed Detective Agency and kept the plot moving forward

We also got the infamous OLD WORLD shot in the intro and I haven't forgiven Bones for that little bit of bait

Season 5 is infamous at this point, once again reminding us that Double Black is not a duo to be taken lightly. Chuuya's role was both as an antagonist but revealed as a secret ally. Once again he saved a member of the ADA and helped with dealing with the major threat, Fyodor.

Considering he is the second half of Soukoku, the duo that is the driving force in the partnership between Atsushi and Akutagawa, and a key piece that moves the plot forward, why doesn't he appear in the endings?

I have two theories, we'll go with that more likely one first.

My theory is that Chuuya will play a more significant role in the future. A running theme in the endings is a focus on Dazai and SSKK or members of the ADA. The only consistent member currently in Port Mafia that appears is Akutagawa.

Even by Season 5 Atsushi has not been at the ADA as long as it feels due to how long the series has been running. He's only begun to understand the landscape of Yokohama and the history ability users. Dazai introduced him to this new world so he's experiencing it in the light of the agency.

I wont go into my theory about Atsushi being the perfect pick to go to Port Mafia for narrative reasons, but that drives my next point. Port Mafia will probably have the spotlight again in the future. They've been fairly absent not counting the obvious 3 in s5 (Aku, Chu, Tachi)

Against all odds and near misses Chuuya and Atsushi have yet to meet. There's a lot of speculation about that but I think if Chuuya does interact with Atsushi it'll be because it's his turn to mentor the new generation of Double Black thus taking Dazai's place in the end credits. What does that mean for Dazai? Who knows, it's all just me theorizing!

The other theory?

Well, this one is more a sad symbolic one; the idea what Chuuya doesn't appear in endings because he doesn't get one. Well, to clarify; Asagiri doesn't pull punches with Chuuya and has stated Chuuya will not be having the easiest of paths. With the looming threat of the Storm still brought up by Verlaine in the present day it could mean he doesn't get a nice happy ending image like we see the ADA get in the S4 ending

Edit: For clarity the symbolic theory is not the Asagiri plans to kill him off, but that he does not get a good ending showing off the people he cares for at PM the way we see the ADA in a group shot in season four

Asagiri says things won't be easy for him. But he's also very resilient so we'll have to see what is in store for him in the future

but they’re all rlly specific & weird

(coming from a cosplayer who’s been in the fandom since 2016)

he has an astigmatism that went untreated for so long he’s now partially blind in his right eye. he needs glasses but hates his old pm pair and never wears them in public. he’s too lazy to get his prescription renewed/hates going to the doctor so they’re not even up to date for his vision

that’s why he’s a bad driver— he can’t fucking see

he drives/reads better if he closes one eye

mori forced him to get braces after he formally joined the port mafia. he had a lisp for the first few months and would blackmail ppl if he did it in front of them

he hid his bad vision for a long time, but mori eventually noticed and forced him to get glasses too. he fucking hated wearing them and “accidentally” kept breaking each new pair mori got

after that, mori got him contacts but he would lie and throw them out just to be defiant (totally not bc they squicked him out)

he originally started wearing his bandages because no one would touch him bc of his ability

he has awful tan lines bc of his bandages, his face and hands are tanner than the rest of his body, but since the sun can permeate light clothing/bandages he also has random splotchiness all over his body, especially his shoulders, arms, & back

in 15, dazai got so excited he was 5 cm taller than chuuya bc he was always the one being bullied for being short/malnourished before they met

at 16, chuuya grew slightly faster than dazai and started teasing him. dazai freaked out and started wearing lifts for a brief period of time. he was researching poisoning techniques to reduce growth right before he finally got his own growth spurt <3

he has chronic insomnia and is a scarily light sleeper. usually gets anywhere from 3-6 hours of sleep a night

he constantly has dark circles under his eyes as a result

whenever he shares a bed with chuuya, he’ll sleep twice as long as normal. at first, chuuya would get mad bc he was a huge brat to try and wake up, but now he lets dazai sleep in as long as he wants

his sense of taste is abysmal, which is why he likes really salty/spicy food. they’re the only flavors he can actually taste

he doesn’t decorate or furnish his ADA apartment because he’s scared that once he gets attached to the place, it’ll get taken away

he constantly beats himself up for not thinking to take odasaku’s coat with him. he bought his current one because it looked similar

he refuses to touch any of his pm salary, so it’s just kept accruing interest and is actually obscene at this point. he asked ango to “handle it” and cover banking stuff under the condition he gets to take out any expenses he wants. it irritates ango to no end that dazai won’t do anything with it

the day kunikida finds out about dazai’s pm bank account will be dazai’s final day on this earth

when he was 15 he was unironically into screamo bc “it screams for me when i can’t.” thought linkin park was super hardcore & his favorite song was “numb” (fucking loser)

he NEVER brushes his hair. like he doesn’t even own a fucking hairbrush or comb until chuuya has a conniption over it and starts keeping one at his apartment

whenever chuuya tries to brush his hair, it’s like trying to wrangle a feral cat. they’ve gotten in physical fights over it that always end with dazai pouting for the next hour while chuuya laughs at how flat his head looks without the rat’s nest

uses dollar store 9-in-1 shampoo/conditioner/bodywash/motor oil. it’s ocean breeze scented! :)

he’s had the same fake driver’s license since he was 15 and never bothered to get a real one

he actually has decent medical training from spending so much time as mori’s apprentice. about the same level as a battle medic would have. capable of stitching wounds & performing surgery, but not as good as yosano even without her ability

yosano has tried to reach out and bond with him about their shared pasts a few times, but he always comes up with an excuse to leave. she eventually gave up on asking

one time, he got badly wounded and had to be treated by yosano. she had to sedate him because her ability doesn’t work on him, and he called her mori the whole time. he doesn’t remember, but she never forgot and stopped trying to spend time with him

There’s Fyodor, arguably Dazai’s soulmate, a single mind in two bodies. There’s Kunikida, Dazai’s partner. There’s Oda, the reason Dazai wants to live. And then there’s Chuuya. If he asked Dazai to define him, to name his purpose, Chuuya already knows what he would hear. Chuuya is his dog, Chuuya is a slug, Chuuya is a chibi. And sure, maybe he is. But none of that is enough. Or, Chuuya can’t figure out what he means to Dazai exactly, but if he would only listen, he would realize that Dazai has been telling him all along.

It stripped him of the god that set his insides to flame and wreaked havoc. Corruption was terrible to Chuuya but Dazai’s touch never was. Chuuya curses the red-black petals that fall from his lips, these nearly rotten things that tear him apart from the inside out. Part of him wants to rip his own traitorous heart out, through a ribcage shattered by feelings he can’t contain. Anger is easy, a thing he’s learned to control. This— whatever the hell this is— is not. Or at least it’s easier to feel as though this is beyond his own control, because Chuuya is not in love. (It feels like a lie even to himself.) After he's hit by a strange ability, Chuuya is forced to consider truths he'd much rather keep hidden- but not everything is as simple it seems.

OR, Chuuya leaves the Port Mafia and attempts to escape his bloodstained past.

Dazai was supposed to have gotten over Chuuya, not melted in his embrace and bound them together for an eternity. (Or: Dazai and Chuuya's unconventional relationship sparks a radical change within Dazai when he wakes up one day under the weather and feeling very, very off.)

In which, Dazai and Chuuya are upto their old shenanigans and make a bet. As a result - Bonds are formed, secrets are revealed, money is spent, devious plans are concatenated; someone gets drugged, someone gets punched, someone gets a wakeup slap. And Chuuya's 'brute' image is at imminent risk. All of this - to with the bet!

Prey to Your Instincts by skylorr (Mature, 98k, 8/8) He was a beta. He was normal. Barely any scent, no cycles, no mating instincts. Just plain old normal. At least, that’s what he thought. He thought he was normal. But instead, Dazai is currently curled up on his single mattress in the shipping container that he calls home as he sweats profusely and struggles through cramps, pains, and the desire to nest. His mattress has a single thin blanket, which apparently does not satisfy the omega instincts trying to claw their way out of his mind. He was so close, too; days away from his 17th birthday, the birthday that would have officially made him a beta. Hope is a killer disease.

Less than forty-eight hours ago, they’d been impaled together, and Chuuya had feared that the broken metal pole had pinned him in place against a corpse. Now, he worried that a corpse sat next to him, nothing more than a poorly-crafted imitation of his ex-partner. ... And what an even shittier situation to be stuck in. Or, A mission goes wrong, and Soukoku die together. Except, they don't, but now they're stuck in a safe house pretending that they did. And if Chuuya wants to find out what went wrong with Dazai's plan, he'll first have to find a way around the wall of silence that his former partner has built to keep him out.

Cigarette Game by chowderpuff (Teen and Up Audiences, 9k, 2/2) Chuuya has a crush on Dazai. Dazai knows this, and he thinks it’s a prime opportunity to mess with his partner a little. After all, why not? Chuuya’s reactions to his flirting are priceless, a new little bonus feature to the game between them, and Dazai actually starts to find it more entertaining than outright arguing. It’s all harmless fun until Dazai realizes that he has feelings too. Then it's decidedly not.

so a while ago i read a theory on reddit (can't recall the user, sorry) that said that asagiri purposely shortened the manga chapters after season 4 was released so that the anime adaptation caught up to the manga. if you are a manga reader, you already know this is true and that season 5 episode 11 goes in fact beyond the manga plot.

this reddit user gave various reasons for this. one (and perhaps the most plausible one) said that it was to force manga readers to watch the season 5 finale. but i think i recall that another option may have been to tie up the manga and the anime, since parallel worlds have a special and pivotal role in bsd (we literally have the beast universe there) and therefore asagiri would be treating the manga and anime storylines as parallel worlds/universes.

and i can't help but worry because i was so relieved when dazai and fukuzawa came out of the conflict alright and everyone started to wake up. we got the detectives back, the hunting dogs (except for yosano, tachihara and jouno) and some port mafia members such as akutagawa and chuuya. both enemies (fyodor and fukuchi) were defeated AND killed. this puts the entirety of the fandom at ease.

the last few seconds of the episode show atsushi and akutagawa fighting against an ame-no-gozen wielder, who has fukuchi's scars and is also wearing a mask similar to the one he's wearing in an official art. so it's HEAVILY hinted that it's him.

now, the thing is, what if the manga takes another direction? what if that fukuchi is there because in the manga the ada loses and fukuchi/fyodor uses the book to jump into the reality where they don't win, which is the anime?

like now we manga readers are sort of relieved because the anime showed us how the arc ends, right? we just watched it. we will read that in the october chapter, right?

atsushi: 1st year, in several clubs, always jumping around and changing because he doesn’t know where he fits in quite yet but he’s trying to figure it out.

dazai: 3rd year, not in any clubs. he tried out a couple but then quickly lost interest because he said he had ‘better’ things to do.

kunikida: 3rd year, not in any club because he tutors people (mainly math, but he can do other subjects as well)

ranpo: 2nd year, in the literature club, he treats it like it’s competitive smh. ranpo, you’re writing books!!! calm down!!!

kenji: 1st year, gardening club! but sometimes he has other after school duties and can’t go. (he’s literally just farming, so really he’s not missing out)

kyōuka: 1st year, gardening but also dabbles in martial arts from time to time.

yosano: 2nd year, hospital volunteer club, she is very serious about it!

jun’ichirō: 1st year, cooking and drama club. he likes drama more than cooking club btw you didn’t hear it from me though….

naomi: 1st year, photography club, she doesn’t really take it too seriously but it’s very fun for her and she still takes heavenly photos somehow???

katai: 3rd year, not necessarily in a club but he’s basically just the schools IT guy. when someone’s computer stops working he goes to the recuse like a superhero. but he’s not a superhero, he’s a guy in a futon.

fukuzawa: vice principal or something cuz I think it’d be funny.

tachihara: 1st year, drama club and gymnastics. no further explanation, moving on!

lucy: 1st year, baking club. she ignores all the lunatics (nikolai) and just has fun.

john: 2nd year, gardening. he likes planting yellow flowers especially, I just know he does.

nathaniel: teacher! teaches math probably, or something boring. no disrespect to him though, he’s cool.

marget: home economics teacher 1000%. she probably lowkey hates her job though because she has to deal with lunatics (nikolai)

louisa: 2nd year, literature club. probably the only normal person in the literwture club somebody help her. also she would be francis’ favorite students they’re literally bffs 🤞🦄

jouno: 3rd year, drama club. Like the first time we’re introduced to him his arresting dazai with superb acting skills, like he had me fooled too 😭🙏

fukuchi: teacher i think. Maybe the martial arts club head teacher or whatever. He probably actually teaches physical education though. 

+ mushitaro who’s not in organization ; 2nd year, he would hang with ranpo and poe (against his will) he would probably be in the baking club for fun. even though he hangs out with ranpo and poe (against his will) he would probably never want to be in the literature club because even when they’re not in club, he always sees the two of the competing and he doesn’t want to deal with that.

i’m probably gonna write a fanfic about this, eventually.
