Final 3 episodes thoughts for CBS's Watson

I think it says a lot about me that I had forgotten Watson as a character is supposed to have served until we got to that episode. Otherwise I think it was a very solid episode with and interesting case. It clearly also had to do some set up work for the two part finale.

Okay I know it just said two part finale and the episodes have the same title but uhh it didn't really feel like a two part-er in a lot of ways. It also suffered from the 1st part (in my opinion) being stronger than the actual final finale.

I felt like a lot of the tension drained once they saved Adam. Like I obviously care about Stephens and shinwell as well but I felt like once Adam was safe I knew they all would be.

I liked the reveal that Ingrid was playing Moriarty for a bit, just wish she had gotten there sooner, as I think there are other ways they could have prolonged the issue rather than have her unknowingly (ish) sabotage.

And yeah I have seen a few of Ingrid positive posts on Tumblr and I'm not quite on the hype train. Like I get it, I have fictional war criminals that I kinda stan, so I can't judge but in this particular case I think it's hard to walk some over choices or characterizations back to a place where I can enjoy her character.

One of the like two other posts about this I've seen mentioned not liking the basically love confession scene with Sasha and Stephens. I am on board with them being a ship I thought they had some cute moments, but to the writers of the show I have to ask: is the art of the slow burn that dead? Are you really so fearful of cancelation that you won't even try? Like they haven't earned where they tried to go with them these last two episodes. My only other thoughts on their scenes is I wonder how much of this was to fill in for the fact that they can't have a super long heartfelt moment between brothers because it's one actor. They had a small moment at the end but one imagines it could have been longer.

I'm not sure I like the decision to kill Moriarty here. Like again are we afraid we aren't getting renewed? Do we want shift to being even more medical procedural so have to shaft the germ warfare spy games? I know this show isn't following Sherlock Holmes lore to the letter, and I love that for them, but this is one of literatures most famous villains and we've defeated him in season 1?

Even with all the criticism I just gave Ingrid I do love all these characters and am super excited to see what they get up to in a season two. Especially as the later half of the season had a more assured feeling.

I would love to hear other people's thoughts as no one I know in real life is watching and I feel like I'm screaming into a void about this show!

Croft twin headcanons.

Stephens played tennis in high school/college (recreationally), Adam played baseball in high school.

Adam has a tattoo of the Dave Matthews Band dancer, which he only like 25% regrets. His favorite band now is The National.

Adam has been in a dozen different bands since middle school. He took a gap year after college to tour the US before starting had school. His bandmates didn't understand how he could crash at 4AM but be up by 9, hungover and studying.

Even when they were at their most estranged the boys would watch basketball together semi regularly.

They loved Toonami on cartoon Network as kids.

Adam majored in theology in undergrad, before becoming interested in medicine. He still talks about studying abroad in India.

They have horrible seasonal allergies. They are severely lactose intolerant.

Stephens loves plants. Has 20 different kinds in his apartment and has meticulous water, humidity, and lighting schedules for them. They all have names and vintage pots, which he gets from regularly going to flea/vintage markets. Lauren hated their names ("That one in the corner is looking a little sad." "Greg?" "I don't know, that one.") but now thinks about them fondly.

Stephens was given a journal for his 15th birthday and had journaled every day since.

Stephens has been (secretly) riding the hallyu wave since before it was cool in the US. He does his best work listening to 2NE1 and BOA. Only Lauren knows about this. It's the one thing about him she hasn't told Adam.

Stephens is a great cook. His carbonara is a thing of beauty. Adam became a pandemic baker. He mills his own flour.

Stephens is great at drawing. He only uses pencils and charcoal.

They both love hiking but Stephens goes more regularly. He loves hiking alone but hiking with Adam has always been his favorite thing.

Looking at episode 10. I liked it well enough but it almost felt like a bunch of B plots were forced into an episode.

I'm a little confused about Lestrade being a brand new person for Watson to interact with. Like I loved her in this episode but Lestrade is a character in the first Sherlock Holmes story. Then again I do think this was the right choice cause she was fantastic and the more they play around with Holmes lore the less like perfect they have to be about it. ( Does that make sense?)

I thought I was over the twins being played by one person but the filming of them in this episode were really annoying. I know the show put itself in this situation but when you have shots with all the team but then have to cut to a completely different angle for Adam it makes it feel like your isolating the character. Which I just don't otherwise think is the case I think its just because of the logistics of having one actor.

Ok now Tumblr girlies (gn) don't come for me but I wasn't on the Ingrid/Sasha train at all. I'm still not super feeling it but I do see it now. Like none of their interactions read as casual friends in this episode. Again still not sold on that being a personal ship but I do want to say to those who do, I see it and I understand it but it just doesn't captivate me (yet). I also am just not really an Ingrid fan like I like her but I don't she still feels flat in some way that I can't describe well (and also see thoughts on episode 9).

Updated thoughts on Watson.

I'm very glad it's getting a second season as I think with even a little more time to find it's footing it can be a great show.

Right now I would say it's still just a good show. If I ignore my what is admittedly a very base level knowledge of HIPPA I feel like I can really get behind what the show is doing. I feel like either I've adjusted or the show has

I'm really liking Watson (the character) and I really really like all of the fellows. My worries about the twins have kind of faded as we have gotten a little more on Adam, and while the stuff we have learned is kind of sporadic but I do feel like I know what his deal is now. I'm very glad we aren't stringing along the Sasha fiance or the Stephens cam girl plot. I am also actually glad we are going slowly with the possibility of any relationship, it could be easy to get them together too fast (to be clear I want them to get together). I wouldn't say I'm an Ingrid fan but I am like so curious as to what the deal is. Like did she kill someone or witness a killing cause why else would she know about a body in a river for Moriarty to grab and taunt her with.

I feel like Mary could be better incorporated and I just feel so bad for the position shinwell is in. Which is a testament to the writing and his performance after only half a season I really feel both the betrayal of Watson and how impossible to get out it is for shinwell.

I personally feel like they are overplaying the Sherlock Holmes connection. I don't mind the references to the man himself, it wouldn't feel like John Watson if he wasn't a little obsessed, it's the other stuff that's gotten on my nerves. Like I do understand that is one of the shows gimmicks but also we really need to burn the Irene Adler & the Mycroft Holmes reveals on a mid-season 1 episode.
