despite not being very far into ooo i've seen ankh's full greeed form, and tbh i kinda hate it,, so i redesigned him!! feat. some doodles of him not clinically posed and symmetrical :p

character design is a true passion of mine, so i infodumped broke down my process below the cut!! do note i'm not approaching this as someone who would have to consider fight choreo and stunts and whatnot. just a disclaimer lol

The thing i immediately hated was how human-like his face looked?? or at least his mouth. yuck. while i get wanting to set Ankh apart from the other greeeds, there's a difference between uniqueness and breaking the rules of design you've put in place for a set of characters. Uva, for instance, has a very bug-like face, whereas Mezool has almost no face thanks to the orca's mouth framing it. That means there's two major ways for a greeed's face to look, and i think where they went wrong was trying to do something entirely different for ankh.

i kindof get what they were going for by making the bird face frame Ankh's *real* face, but imo they added too much detail to both. if youre making the big face's mouth frame the actual face, don't give the actual face a mouth lol, it crowds the design too much and looks confusing. Plus, he's a suit character, he doesn't exactly need a mouth to talk from!! So for this redesign, i made both faces much more simple and gave the primary face a sortof stand-in mouth.

Next thing was the hair. why, why, WHY on EARTH does the hair on Ankh's full form not match the hair he gives the people he possesses?!?!?!? that was the first visual hint we get as to Ankh's full appearance when he changes Shingo's physical attributes upon possessing him, and when he possesses Eiji it does the same swoopy thing. so. i made my design have hair that does that. this is basic shit yall come on 😭

Then i saw the dinky lil drab half-cape they gave him and i said oh no. oh honey. this is a BIRD. you've Gotta give him more drama than that. i kept the black to break up the ocean of red in the design (and i'll admit it is still a little red-heavy up top), but since he is a bird-based character with a triad color scheme, i made the back of it have that gradient. the tatoba/traffic-light/analogous color pattern is repeated all over the suit in Ankh's canon design, and i did want to stick to that so he's still recognizable as the same character.

Speaking of sticking to canon, i actually think the chest piece and waist armor is the only thing i didn't majorly change. i simplified the color placement, but tbh that can be chocked up to the quick-and-dirty art style i did for this, i was mostly just feeling the design out. But i did include the gradients down the chest, again to break up the red. not sure if i like it if i'm 100% honest-- it doesn't quite line up the way i want. The only other thing i added here were the bird claw pauldrons, mostly to make him match Uva bc i LOVE Uva's weird bug leg pauldrons, and I love when design elements are repeated across different characters in unique ways. not sure if you can really see them under his fluffy feather cape, but oh well

I kept the thigh pieces fairly simple, omitting the green from the gradient as it's present on the loincloth-like piece just between them. For the kneepads, i repeated the flying bird motif on the iconic forearm armor, because it's such a fun element and is the first thing we see of Ankh, so i knew repeating it somewhere on the design was essential, even if it didnt match exactly. i see they did this on the canon design, but the shape was just too different to solidify it. it weirdly looks like a face? and again this isn't practical suit design-- i'm sure having kneepads in this shape would Not Work from a stunts standpoint.

Lastly, i don't have much to say about the shoepieces honestly? Aside from the fact that in Ankh's canon greeed form his bird claws more resemble owl feet. which. i guess isn't incorrect? they're still bird themed. just looks odd with the tropical bird everything else. So i just made them a bit daintier lol. kinda wish i'd kept the green painted nails tho, thats cute.

ANYWAYS if you read this far, thank you!! i love getting to analyze character design-- what works, what doesn't, all that!! so this was a lot of fun. whether you agree or disagree with my decisions, i hope you enjoyed seeing my art and reading my ramblings!! <3

I went back and forth on whether to post this or not because I normally don't like callouts, but ultimately, I've decided this one is fair. This is a serious issue for low vision people like me, who have a hard enough time finding places and communities where we are accepted. This is a common issue. I run into this OFTEN. I will no longer be silent about it.

Ultimately: If you don't want me to talk about you being ableist, don't be ableist! It's very simple. I wouldn't have posted this at all if the people involved had met me with any semblance of respect, curiosity, or care, but they decided to double down on their hypocrisy instead.

Recently, I joined (and then immediately left) The Daemonism Forum's Discord server because I was invited to check it out by a friendly acquaintence and I was curious to see what it was all about. Like most servers, it's not very accessible to screenreader users, but there wasn't any place for me to make a comment on this. I couldn't open a ticket and there was no channel for server feedback, so I mostly just kept to myself and put it at the bottom of my folders, muted.

There was no suggestion for image descriptions or alt text. There was no rule banning unicode. There was nothing showing that the space was friendly for screenreader users.

The single time I tried to speak there (beyond the first day when I was giving hellos and thank yous back to the welcomers), which was yesterday, it blew up in my face.

First, I was asked to add my system tag into my username. Cool, no big deal, I'd just forgotten!

Then, when I added it, Fern (the mod) said this:

with "thank you for that !! we do ask that you don't use emojis only for your system tag, however, for ease of screenreaders and communication purporses! if you could please put a tag that's got a word in it also"

me replying to that with, "as a screenreader user myself (low vision), your server name is unreadable due to the unicode. emojis read fine on all three of my screenreaders. i'd be willing to add a word if it were actually to benefit screenreaders (and i will, since i am aware all are built differently), but it definitely looks quite a bit hypocritical to me that unicode symbols are perfectly allowed but my own tag is an issue. /not mad"]

Fern's display name has two unicode characters in it.

Now, I've been blind for a long time and low vision for a much longer time after that, so I'm pretty familiar with screenreaders considering I often use one! Every single screenreader I have ever used, across every device, cannot read unicode. This is fairly basic knowledge on screenreaders. This is a very quick "search or ask any screenreader user" sort of thing.

Clearly, Fern is unaware of how screenreaders work, yet is enforcing a rule in a large public space claiming it's for "screenreader accessibility" when the entire server is far from accessible whatsoever. I pointed out that there probably are screenreaders out there that struggle with emojis and that I'd add a word, but it felt very hypocritical to police me on assistive technology she clearly knew nothing about and didn't care about.

Other users (who aren't mods and therefore I've censored) chimed in.

[ID: User saying "Generally it is way easier to search for someone by their system tag if it's a word rather than emoji, at least for me"

Me replying "the issue i'm facing is correcting me claiming it's "for accessibility" while actively being far more inaccessible to far more screenreaders, showing that the person who corrected me very likely isn't educated on blindness, low vision, or how screenreaders actually function. it'd be way less an issue on my end if it were asked just for lookup purposes and not using "screenreader accessibility" as the reason whilst actively breaking my screenreaders."]

[ID: A different user saying "This is an issue we've brought up before, on the other end, as currently the rules around emojis in display names only apply for pluralkit display names instead of for everyone."

Kipling & Arkadius, another mod, replying "We ask for system tags to include text for multiple reasons. Accessibility is one, but also the ability to search (also important for moderation), a more unique and recognizable system tag (as multiple systems may use the same or similar emojis), and the fact that emojis are not universal across devices and may not even show up on some. You can still add emojis to your name but we ask that the system tag is present in text form. As far as I know we have not been made aware previously of screen reader issues with Unicode characters, so that is helpful feedback to have! I also want to say that the mod team has been discussing the current pk display name rules. This is also not the proper channel for extensive discussion of this rule."]

This is where I actively got angry. Kipling clearly doesn't know about screenreaders either, since the mods "have not been made aware previously of screenreader issues with unicode" when that's... VERY common knowledge among literally anyone who cares to look. Why are these mods making rules on assistive technology with zero knowledge of it in a large server? Did they even think to consult a blind person for two seconds?

It then somehow got worse.

[ID: Fern saying "yes sorry if I worded that incorrectly, we need a word name at least (if you want an emoji too that's fine)"

Me replying "there's not exactly anywhere for anyone to offer feedback, though. the emojis are not the issue. i do not care about the emojis. the issue is that this server claims to care about accessibility without even knowing how the assistive technology they're making rules about works. you (the staff) are actively being ableist by doing that.

here's my suggestion: you cannot claim to care about "accessibility" when you only care if it doesn't apply to you personally and you don't listen to actually legally blind people on the matter. my other suggestion is that if you (the staff) actually care about screenreader accessibility, then you need to look into what that means instead of throwing it around at everyone with absolutely zero clue of how the assistive technology you claim to care about even works to begin with. whatever, I'm out"]

The fact that the SIGHTED mods of such a large and long-running server are actively watering down and silencing my issues with actual hypocrisy and ableism when I'm the one who actually uses the screenreaders they're making rules about is disgusting.

These mods do not need to be a pillar or an educator of ANY community if they lack the emotional maturity to even read what my actual issue was. This is disgusting, abhorrent, and blatantly ableist behavior, and I know nothing will change unless people talk about it.

This space is NOT safe for screenreader users, low vision users, or blind users. The mods are actively blatantly ableist towards us, just so you're aware before you join or consider joining.

some notes on tumblr tagging for tiktok refugees (i know the ban was short lived but we hope you consider staying here instead!!)

tags are different from terms. tags are the things at the bottom of a post with a #hashtag, terms are just... words anywhere in a post. tags are the thing you deliberately put on a post to categorize it.

like on tiktok, tumblr tags are used for optimizing searchability on a post--you can look up a tag on tumblr and see every post someone has made with it.

tags are also organization tools on one's own blog--i tag all my cheerful/positive posts with '#smiles' so i can go through the tag if i have a bad day, or see every post ive tagged with '#cats'.

tag trigger warnings and do not censor them. using "glitter" as a stand-in trigger, you NEED to tag as "#glitter", not '#gl1tt3r'. you dont have to worry about an algorithm blocking your triggering glitterposts, but individual people will blacklist "#glitter", and that won't work if you spell it differently!

when setting up a blacklist you can use asterisks before and/or after a term to broaden it. blocking "#*glitter*" should (if tumblr does its job) cover tags like '#glitter cw' and '#cw glitter', which someone might use so that their post doesnt get categorized in the '#glitter' tag for others to look up.

there's also a field for blacklisting terms rather than tags, which will block every post with "glitter" anywhere in the text, including usernames!

when you use the tumblr search function the 'search' tab will show you every post that contains that term somewhere--the 'tagged' tab shows you posts deliberately tagged with that term!

both types of searches are pretty busted tbh--desktop url searches are a bit more reliable but not perfect. you can search individual blogs with tumblr.com/[blogname]/tagged/glitter to look through a tag. adding /chrono sorts them oldest to newest.

the original post is the only one that shows up in the main tumblr tag. you can tag "#glitter" on your reblog of a post not originally tagged as such, and that post won't show up in the "#glitter" tag.

blacklists will pick up the tags on the original post even if a reblog doesn't have them! this is useful for blocking e.g. stuff with terfy origins that the person reblogging it didn't know about. if you blacklist "#radfems please interact" and OP tagged the post with that, you won't see it even if the person you saw reblog it tagged it with nothing at all.

it's considered rude to tag an original post with something the post speaks of negatively. that's why one might tag an original post as "#glitter cw" rather than just "#glitter"--if the post shit-talks glitter, don't put it in the "#glitter" tag where glitter fans go to see glitter content!

fandoms at least will usually have a "#[fandom] negative", '#[fandom] neg', or "#[fandom] critical" tag for this. put it there instead.

tags are also used for plain ol' yapping. tag chatter is the low intensity version of a comment or reply. it doesn't prompt a response, it's mostly just for you and your followers. only the OP and the person you reblogged from will see your tags in their notifications.

HOWEVER people can find your tags by looking through the notes, and it's not uncommon to drag tags into the main post by quoting or screenshotting them. they might say "how dare you leave this in the tags" or 'these tags passed peer review' if they really liked them and wanted to share what you said. or they may properly respond!

if you go for a screenshot please put the text in the alt or as an ID below for screenreaders!

it's also nice to link to the person whose tags you're showing off or addressing, but if you reblog from them directly you can indicate this by calling them "prev".

tags can be edited on desktop but on mobile you have to delete them and start again.

there's a 280 character limit per tag and a limit of i think 20 tags per post?

the most important rule of tagging is to have fun and be yourself! <3 and also to provide trigger warnings, because seriously.

#unspecified - Intersex variation(s) and/or trait(s), or lack thereof, weren't specified in the ask.

Characters are organized under variations (i.e. "CAIS", "xx/xy chimerism", "polycystic ovary syndrome", etc.) and traits ("hypotrichosis", "menstruation", "hirsutism", "feminizing puberty", etc.), as well as any queer identities. They're also all tagged with their source & their name. Find your favorites!

#unidentified variation - The "lack thereof" as we noted above. If the character in the ask is specified to have a variation that ISN'T identified or known! Can have adjectives, like "unidentified feminizing/masculinizing variation".

#fictional intersex variation - A character who does/would have a variation, but it's deliberately fictionalized somehow, such as due to being an alien and not subscribing to what we'd typically consider intersexuality in humans. Or for virtually any other reason.

#intersex adjacent variations / #mesosex variations - Conditions that may or may not be considered intersex, depending on who you speak to. Generally, variations sorted under this tag are related to intersexuality somehow anyway whether because of their cause (i.e. Endometriosis and Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) being due to sex hormones affecting an individual atypically), or because they can cause intersex traits (i.e. Aarskog-Scott Syndrome with cryptorchidism, misplaced clitoris, and/or shawl scrotum, Poland Syndrome causing breast and nipple hypo- or aplasia, along with cryptorchidism and hypospadias in close-to-male individuals, etc.), however may not universally be considered variations by the intersex community.

#invited to the cookout - Same as above but for shits and giggles, referencing a reblog essay where I referred people with Endometriosis and PMDD as "invited to the cookout".

#queer headcanons - ANY headcanons that involve gender or orientation.

#queer characters - Similarly sorted like the intersex catagory, these are for any characters who are canonically queer of any flavor.

Above two (2) tags have subsections, replacing "queer" with other labels; "trans" for individuals who are (head)canoned to be transgender, "nonbinary" for (head)canons under the nonbinary spectrum of genders or lack thereof. There's also "disability headcanon/disabled characters" thus far, which might speak for itself. Includes neurodiversity as well.

#hamilton rule - Technically a real person but JUST far enough from reality in a fictional media they can pass on this blog. Based off the Hamilton Musical.

#topa rule - The character toes the line of being a canon or coded intersex character. Based off Topa from The Orville, an alien who's species surgically reassigns any female to being male due to their species' RAMPANT misogyny (and supposed rarity of females compared to males). She transitions back to being a girl after learning of her mutilation. Yes I have been requested Topa, the post is in my drafts and I'm working on it because I have Thoughts!

#reclaimed characters - Character is an offensive depiction of intersexuality, but we're taking them as our own because fuck you. Posts will be trigger-tagged accordingly because I'm not a dick, this is for organization.

#niche characters - Characters from IPs that aren't widely popular. Mostly based on my surface knowledge of the source, or lack thereof I guess.

#18+ source - I kindly ask under 18s to block this tag, posts with it will also have "#minors dni" and "#mdni" tagged as well. Request posts where the character comes from a primarily sexual or otherwise NSFL media.

#incomplete requests - Usually answered asks, but otherwise requests I couldn't complete for whatever reason, be it I couldn't find sufficient imagery to edit or couldn't find the character in question, etcetera.

making the supernatural fandom more accessible

hey fellow spn fans!! what if we all teamed up to make the spn tumblr experience more accessible?

it sucks that some of the best posts this fandom churns out are completely unreadable to bloggers who use screen readers (or heck, even to people whose wifi sucks so that images never load).

take the amazing scripts that we’re currently so pumped about -- imagine you use a screen reader (if you don’t), and you hear fellow fans going completely feral over content you can’t access. you want to be in on the hype! but you have zero clue why everyone’s screaming about windmills or whatever, because the scripts getting shared are un-captioned screenshots.

...and then there are posts that are just. walls of text! which is really difficult for certain neurodivergent folks to read, such as those with adhd. being aware of that when making original posts (or comments) and adding more paragraph breaks -- and possibly even spicing up the text by bolding important parts, etc. -- is an easy fix for that!

so. here’s my proposal: each one of us commits to whatever level of effort is possible for us (given each person’s unique time, energy, abilities, etc.) in the joint effort to improve accessibility.

Level 1: the ID hunter.

when you go to reblog any spn post that includes images (whether that’s gifs, screenshots, fanart, etc.), check in the notes to see if someone else has added an image description already!

if they have, reblog from them so that the image description spreads further.

"BUT what if someone added the image description before certain commentary was added to the post, and i wanna reblog the post with those extra comments?”

Well, i can’t speak for everyone who creates image descriptions, but i for one don’t care if someone copies & pastes my ID so that they can add it to their own reblog. i don’t care that my blog’s no longer connected to the image description i wrote -- so long as the ID is spread, i’m happy!

Level 2: the copy-paste monster.

when you love another fan’s tags enough to add them to the post -- do so by copy & pasting them, not by screenshotting them!

for your own posts or comments: if you’re sharing, say, a quote from an article or a fanfic or a tweet, do so by copy & pasting the quote instead of taking a screenshot.

if someone else has already shared a screenshot from an article, fanfic, or tweet, and you have a link to the original, do the extra legwork to go to the source, copy and paste, and make an ID.

Level 3: the fandom angel.

If you have the ability, time, and energy to type out image descriptions for spn posts that don’t yet have one, please do it!

If even just a few of us commit to creating even just one ID per day each, that will add up!

And, of course, if you’re making your own post, give it an ID right there in the original posting, if you’re able! I understand that not everyone has the spoons (/time/energy/ability) to do this, and that’s okay. But those who can, please do!

Tumblr now allows you to put alt text on images, so you can do it that way or the old-fashioned way of just including your image description in the text of the post.

Not sure how to write an image description? This post offers some truly comprehensive advice on how to write IDs for various types of content, from photos to fanart to charts to screenshots of text.

By the way, I’ve seen folks ask that you don’t put the ID under a readmore. Keep it easy to access!

Nervous that you’re not gonna write an ID right? First off, practice makes perfect -- you’ll improve with time. I’m pretty sure that an imperfect or incomplete ID is better than no ID at all -- hopefully someone else will come along to reblog with any necessary corrections to whatever ID you write!

Level 4: the man of letters (gn).

You’re going above and beyond what this post advises -- you’re also out there coming up with and implementing other ways to improve accessibility!

Maybe you’re a blogger who uses a screen reader yourself, with more you want to add to this post from your own experience.

Maybe you’ll choose to seek out bloggers who use screen readers themselves -- or who have other accessibility needs -- so you can learn straight from them what their needs are.

Maybe it’s something else! I don’t know, but I do know this post is incomplete -- so please, share your ideas for other ways we can all work together to improve our fandom.

None of us has to do everything, but most of us can do something. If enough of us take even just small steps, we can create a more accessible fandom. Who’s with me?

annoying guy at work keeps targetting me and bothering me about my music when i play it while we are working in the same room. he doesnt do this with anyone else and will even be like “but x will play the radio!!”

e once again asked me to put the radio on instead of my music, even tho i even made a new playlist that was a mix of CURRENT RADIO HITS that i dont hate--like stuff literally on the top 40 AS WE SPEAK!!!!--oldies hits from the 20th century, and some older pop hits like lady gaga and britney spears.

literally like limited rock (and again only stuff that actually did well) and like one or two indie stuff (which id purposely queue up for when it was just me and harshal in the room lol) and i even told him like ok one.

the radio im using is fuzzy on most FM stations anyways and the stations i do know are either gonna be playing the EXACT SAME MUSIC or be all alt. stuff that he didnt like before (Since before he asked me to change it to pop hits)

. and he tried to spin it as oh he doesnt really care he likes all music (But also doesnt listen to music, apparently) and its all about the people in packaging..... the people in packaging who. where literally. singing along. to a lot of the songs!!!! and were clearly really enjoying it!! hell one of the Quality Assurance guys came in to do paperwork when Helena by MCR was on and he started singing that!!

Like. this dude is CONSTANTLY lying to my face but hes SO bad at it and its annoying. its clear he is the one with the issue but he doesnt want to be confrontational but also he NEEDS me to change it so badly.

I told him that if he wants something--even a goddamn genre or a specific radio station--he can tell me, but just "change it to the radio" is really rude bc it reads as "i would rather listen to anything but this" (even tho again. most of it was. stuff. currently. on. the fucking. radio.) and i was using my spotify bc i dont like listening to ads lol but whenever i ask him “okay what radio station do you want?” he never has an answer bc again its not about actually listening to something he likes its about making me feel bad and causing me issues over goddamn petty shit.

AND THEN he was also like, as further justification for why the packaging people clearly did not like my music, was that they were talking about classical music at one point.

which ok 1) what fucking radio station is playing mozart?

2) i can tell you exactly WHY they were talking about mozart. it was bc 99 luftballoons and rock me amadeus came on in my playlist (They were both hits in canada/the us and ive heard BOTH on the radio in german here btw). yknow. as in. amadeus mozart? and the connection was mostly bc one of the packaging guys knew a lil german bc he had wanted to learn to play mozarts music. but yknow i actually listen to people when they talk unlike this dude

i got this ask a few days ago and usually, i would just ignore it but it is bothering me for some reason. anon, i understand what you’re saying and i don’t think you were trying to be aggressive or dismissive. im sure you only sent this as an attempt to “be on my side” so to speak, so please dont take this as me attacking you at all, but i do want to say: it is absolutely not too much to ask for people to want me to add id’s to posts.

look, im of the belief that accessibility should not have to be asked for-- it should be the norm. honestly im a little embarrassed it took me this long to star adding id’s. low vision and blind users are on this site and deserve that; people with sensory issues deserve that. hell, even people with slow internet deserve that. im more than capable of adding them, so i should be adding them. in real life, i work in 3d printing for museums and a huge part of that is to create educational and recreational spaces that are accessible to more people; both blind and neurodivergent students alike. if you don’t have any sensory issues, i think we can become complacent in just how limiting our experiences can be and that complacency becomes exclusionary. spaces like the internet and museums should not be limited to sighted or neurotypical people-- we all have a right to them.

i dont mean to sermonize here, but its important to me to create a space where people feel safe to ask me to change my mistakes to make it a better user experience to more people. i cant promise im always going to do it right, or always remember but i can make a genuine effort to make my art more accessible and i think we all should.

Los Angeles artist Wallice follows debut single 'Punching Bag' with new coming of age anthem, '23'. Wallice finds herself caught between two places on fresh cut, '23'. “Too old to be a runaway”, but also too young to consider herself as grown up, the 22-year old yearns for a past that still has not happened yet. Working with producer David Marinelli since her return to California, Wallice has crafted a sound that is unique without taking itself too seriously. Los Angeles based dream pop trio Tashaki Miyaki have just released a single and video of the title song from their forthcoming second album, Castaway, which will be released on April 23 via Metropolis Records. Singer, drummer and producer Paige Stark states that the song “is about the challenges of romantic love and how we are all bad at it in one way or another. The idea of a castaway in all this is that no one understands the relationship except the people in it, so you really are stuck on an island alone together there. • I’ve always been super into crime stories/true crime (where my anxiety comes from, I’m always worried about a pesky serial killer just killing me. It’s usually being kidnapped tho lmao) so I knew and still know like all these murder facts and sometimes I’d just randomly be like;

“Hey did you know it takes 12 hours and 2 days to dissolve a body in acid?”

“If you bury a dead deer over a dead body you buried deep in the ground, when police dogs sniff it and people dig they’ll just think it was the deer and won’t dig any farther.”

• So maybe people had a reason to be scared of me and think I’ll be a criminal someday, i dunno.

• I love love love reading and writing, and also debating. The things I’ve wanted to be when I grow up are basically: Dog shelter worker, actress, FBI agent, politician, and a writer. But usually I just want to do something that makes a positive impact on people. Like i wanted to be an FBI agent to solve crimes for people. I wanted to be a politican so I could actually help a lot of people. The entertainment industry also seemed like a way to make people happy. Idk, but then I decided I couldn’t be a politican at 10 because they were all corrupt and to be one I would have to be too. 😫🤌🏻 we love some good childhood angst

• the only subjects I’ve ever excelled at are ELA and Social Studies aka History, and Math I can’t do to save my life. ELA comes easy for me and I usually don’t have to work that hard and/or get too stressed over it. But I always get the meanest teachers for some reason. For example, one time I did my final essay for like 30% of my grade in 30 minutes the day it was due and I got an A+ 🦟🦗🦟🦗

A story from my childhood that summarizes it pretty well is when I was in 2nd grade my friend wet her pants and she didn’t want to go to the nurse for it alone so I peed my pants so I could go with her and she wouldn’t have to be alone. Like, you know, a professional problem solver

• and I have genuinely attacked people for fucking with my friends but don’t snitch pls 🕳🏃‍♀️💨

• But also just anyone, people at my school tend to come to me with their problems for me to either help solve them by reasoning, or just to confront the other person like the bad bleep I am 😈😈

• I also have a huge daydreaming problem, it’s literally maladaptive daydreaming. So paired with my ADHD I don’t get shit done like ever.

• I have really high empathy levels I guess, like I always say hi to everyone I see on the street, especially if they look sad 😔 I’ve done it ever since I was a little kiddo.

• About my physical appearance, I have fluffy n curly brown hair, but when it’s in the sunlight it looks sort of brown but golden yk?? It’s shoulder length :) I have bleach blonde streaks in the front. I like wearing eyeliner most days, too. I’m pretty average size/ on the skinnier side. Kinda high key inscure abt my body bc I got flat shamed in elementary EVEN THOUGH I HAVE TIDDIES NOW- whatever 😤🙄. I also have crystal type blue eyes, and I do have fairly big eyes. But, like, not weirdly big. A good big. My cheekbones are ALWAYS PRESENT so sometimes I get called a Tim Burton character but it’s cool ig ☠️☠️ oh and I’m kinda short. I’m 5’3, even though my doctor said I’d be 5’7. I feel like I was either tricked by the doctor or someone just stole my destined height while I was asleep. It’s probably cause I didn’t keep an eye out for Selener 👁 😔😔

• I’m a definite night owl, like all of my energy comes at night which really sucks cuz I can’t do much since everyone else is asleep.

• My love language is touch starved so I’ve never figured it out ✌🏻😗🔫

• I’m a huge introvert with social anxiety. It isn’t as bad as it used to be cuz I used to not be able to like go to restaurants but now I’m much better.

• I’m a huge history person, mostly like sad history LMFAO. Uh but a lot of my hyperfixations have been on history. Some examples are The Roman Empire, Julius Caesar himself, Anne Frank, The Titanic, the Black Plauge, Helen Keller, Marie Curie, Slavery in the US, Joan of Arc, and just a lot more. I always love talking about these things if someone would let me ramble to them but no one ever does 😖 it also got to a point where for all these subjects I’d go to the library and try to find a book on them but usually I’d either have already read it or I’d read it and know all the information.

• I’m super into Greek Mythology, I have 7 books filled with the stories, I’m going to Greece maybe this summer to see it’s history, and named my hamster Aphrodite but we call her Aphie. I also will talk about this forever and ever if you let me.

• My favorite color is yellow, my favorite food is literally nothing I never have an appetite, my favorite planet is Saturn, favorite song is Tag Your It by Melanie Martinez atm but it changes like everyday.

• Music is a huge safe-space for me if I’m feeling down or having a panic attack. It calms me down n is overall my coping mechanism 💃🏻💃🏻

• Biggest fear is spiders, even looking at one gives me a panic attack and I cannot sleep at all for that night, adding to my insomniac ass 🧎🏻‍♂️🏌️‍♀️

• I’m mature for my age, I don’t exactly like hanging around kids my age and I get along better with older crowds.

• i don’t like conventional dates, (I PROMISE IM NOT TRYING TO SOUND ‘QUIRKY’ AHAHA) I kind of like having a best-friend type partner more so dates that aren’t as romantic as like the movies or a fancy restaurant suite me better. My dream date is playing Monopoly on my bedroom floor 🦧

• Also I hate getting gifts. End of story. If someone gets me a gift like awe that’s nice but never again, I’d prefer to get you one. Especially in a romantic partner 😐 i keep a journal of my friends’ interests and hobbies so I can get them the perfect gifts for their bdays and Christmas’s. Been doing this ever since 4th grade.

• I’m a huge believer in ‘family isn’t blood, it’s who you make it’ because I have a pretty shitty family life and my childhood has been trash. My friends are my family to me.

Mars is the next step for humanity – we must take it

Elon Musk has built a US$12 billion company in an endeavour to pave the way to Mars for humanity. He insists that Mars is a “long-term insurance policy” for “the light of consciousness” in the face of climate change, extinction events, and our recklessness with technology.

On the other hand, astronaut Chris Hadfield is sceptical: “Humanity is not going extinct,” he told me. He added:

There’s no great compelling reason to go, apart from curiosity, and that’s not going to be enough to sustain the immense cost necessary with the technology that exists right now.

But I question our future, stuck here on Earth. Our environment is a highly balanced system and we are the destabilising element. Pursuing “green” initiatives is no long-term solution to the wall we’re hurtling towards, they’re speed bumps. If this is where humankind is destined to remain, then we shall find ourselves fighting over whatever is left of it.

Politically speaking, sending humans into space brings nations together – the International Space Station stood as the physical manifestation of the reunification of the USA and Russia and is now a platform for broader international co-operation.

Space exploration is also inspiring: during NASA’s Apollo programme to the Moon, the number of graduates in mathematics, engineering and the sciences in the US doubled. Igniting the imagination of that generation helped propel the US into the dominant position it’s held since the 1960s. What could a Mars programme do?

The Moon is not a stepping stone

Wouldn’t the Moon, so much nearer than Mars, be a better first step? Actually, no – it’s just too different. It’s better to test hardware and train people in analogs on Earth, such as the geologically similar high-altitude desert in Utah or the cold and dry Canadian Arctic desert. Why the European Space Agency has declared the Moon a stepping-stone to Mars is beyond me, as doing so increases the cost of a Mars programme hugely.

It takes about 50% more energy to put something on the surface of the Moon than it does on Mars. The Martian atmosphere can be used to slow down approaching spacecraft, instead of the need for extra fuel to slow the descent. It would also mean developing two different sets of landing techniques and hardware. There are reasons to go to the Moon, just not if your ultimate destination is Mars.

Even colonising the Moon is questionable: it simply hasn’t the resources to sustain an advanced colony. Mars has fertile soil, an abundance of water (as ice), a carbon-dioxide rich atmosphere and a 24-and-a-half hour day. The Moon’s soil is not fertile, water is as rare, it has no effective atmosphere, and a 708-hour day. It’s feasible to introduce biological life to Mars, but not the Moon.

With only a relatively small push, Mars could be returned to its former warm, wet, hospitable state. Raising the temperature at the south pole by a few degrees would see frozen CO2 in the soil begin to gasify. As a greenhouse gas, it would further raise the temperature, gasifying more CO2 in a self-sustained global-warming process.

Eventually, water frozen into the soil would liquefy, covering half of the planet. After about a century, Mars would settle down with an atmosphere about as dense as the lowland Himalayas and a climate suitable for T-shirts.

The technological hurdles

Hadfield warns that “we need to invent a lot of things” before going to Mars, and that “there’s no great advantage to being the early explorers who die”. Few would disagree with that, but what are the challenges a crewed mission to Mars faces?

Radiation: An astronaut would receive a lifetime allowable dose of radiation in a single 30-month round-trip, including 18 months on the surface. But this is only equivalent to increasing the lifetime cancer risk from about 20% to 23%. As the majority of this is received in transit between planets, with proper radiological protection on the ship, it would actually be (radiologically speaking) healthier for an astronaut to live on Mars with a radiation dose of 0.10 sieverts per year than to smoke on Earth at 0.16 sieverts per year.

There is no single practical solution to the radiation problem. One strategy I helped develop was to optimise the internal layout of the equipment and structures in the Mars habitat module to minimise exposure – placing existing bulk in all the right places. This reduced exposure by about 20%, without adding any mass. Even taking empty sandbags, packing them with Martian soil and putting them on the roof would be a simple and effective measure on Mars. Radiation is an issue to tackle, but it’s not a deal-breaker.

Power: “We need a compact energy source,” says Hadfield. “We cannot be relying on the tiny bit of solar power that happens to arrive at that location.”

While the solar energy reaching the surface of Mars is about half that on Earth, this isn’t a show-stopper. A quick back-of-the-envelope calculation shows that to power the equivalent of an average US household on Mars, even through dust storms, one would need an array of solar panels totalling six metres square – very achievable.

Reduced gravity: The effects of microgravity on astronauts’ health have been studied for decades, and a range of techniques have been developed to mitigate the wasting effects on muscle and bone.

With Martian gravity around a third of that on Earth, it would take astronauts a couple of days to acclimatise, and perhaps a few months to fully adapt. NASA and ESA have been developing an under-suit that compresses the body to overcome the negative effects of a reduction in pressure and gravity.

However, biological adaption could be made easier if microgravity were avoided altogether. The spacecraft could be spun in-transit to generate an artificial gravity that slowly decayed, simulating a transition from Earth to Mars gravity (and vice versa) over the six-month journey.

Ultimately, until humans are actually living on other planets it’s unlikely we’ll solve or even recognise all the subtle long-term health problems associated with reduced gravity. And who’s to say what the advances in bio-engineering and technology will make the human body capable of when that time comes?

The social hurdles

Life on Mars: If there’s life on Mars, even if it’s microbial, should we be allowed to spread to the planet, potentially risking its extinction? I find this question strange – as Chris McKay put it: “We commit microbial genocide every time we wash our hands”. We engineer and farm the complex life around us as systematically and as cheaply as possible. Billions of people eat the carcasses of organisms that were thinking and breathing only days before. Why, all of a sudden, should Martian microbes be given such sanctity? It should certainly be studied, but it shouldn’t prevent our spreading.

Back contamination: Conversely, the question of whether some Martian plague might accidentally be introduced to Earth should be taken seriously – but not blown out of proportion. There’s only a remote chance that Martian life might be hazardous. The things that kill us do so because they’ve evolved in lock-step with us in a continual evolutionary arms race. Any Martian life will have evolved independently and is unlikely to be capable even of interacting with Earth life on a molecular level. As Robert Zubrin put it: “Trees don’t get colds and humans don’t get Dutch Elm Disease.”

Psychology: Depending on relative orbits, sending a message between Earth and Mars can take between three and 22 minutes. This loss of real-time communication will leave astronauts feeling cut-off and alone. Hadfield says that it’s vital to keep up crew morale and motivation:

Once you get any distance away on any sort of voyage, the epic-ness disappears, the reality becomes the foreground, and the applause is long gone.

Cost: A crewed Mars programme would cost the equivalent of a few weeks of the US defence budget. The US plans on spending about ten times more on nuclear weapons than on space exploration over the coming decade. The UK government spends about as much on gastric band surgery through the NHS as it does on its space activities.

So while a Mars programme certainly has challenges to overcome, the technological gap between us and Mars is far smaller than it was for the Moon programme in the 1960s. And the prospects the Red Planet holds for humanity are far greater.
