#LokSabhaElections2024 : Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury Under Fire From TMC For Alleged Video Asking People To Vote For BJP

The Trinamool Congress has accused Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury of being the “B-team” of the Bharatiya Janata Party after a purported video, where he allegedly stated that voting for the BJP is better than voting for the TMC, went viral, prompting a denial from the Congress, claiming the video was “doctored”.
An eight-second video clip of Chowdhury’s speech during an election rally in West Bengal’s Murshidabad was shared by the TMC, where the sitting Congress MP and candidate from West Bengal’s Baharampur was seen saying “It’s better to vote for the BJP than to vote for the TMC.”
However, the authenticity of the clip could not be verified.
Responding to the clip, the West Bengal Congress unit termed it as doctored and officially complained to the EC, seeking intervention and appropriate penal action.
Commenting on the purported remarks, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said the goal of his party is to bring down the numbers of the BJP in West Bengal and that the TMC is part of the INDIA bloc.
Earlier in the day, the TMC, upset with Chowdhury’s continual criticism and holding him responsible for the breakdown of seat-sharing discussions with Congress in the state, labelled him as “anti-Bengal.”
In a post on X, the TMC said after acting as the “eyes and ears of BJP in Bengal,” Chowdhury has now been promoted to be the “voice of the BJP in Bengal.”
“Listen to how the B-Team member is openly asking people to vote for the BJP – a party that refused to release Bengal’s rightful dues and deprived our people of their rights. Only a Bangla-Birodhi can campaign for the BJP, which has repeatedly insulted Bengal’s icons,” the TMC said.
“On May 13, people of Baharampur will give a befitting response to this betrayal!” it added.
TMC Rajya Sabha MP Saket Gokhale also attacked the Congress leader over the remarks.
“Finally from the B-team horse’s mouth! Congress Bengal chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury publicly asks people in his rally to vote for the BJP and not the TMC. While Mamata Banerjee fights against the full might of Modi+Central Agencies machinery, Bengal Congress is openly asking votes for the BJP,” he said in a post on X.
“In Bengal, TMC is INDIA taking on BJP. Meanwhile, Congress and CPM have chosen to become Modi’s loyal soldiers. This is disgusting and beyond shameless,” he said.

Tribals Hold Centrestage Again In Modi’s Attack On Congress
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also made a big announcement. He pledged to achieve 100% saturation in all schemes to put an end to all kinds of appeasement. This is true secularism, he asserted and outlined how his Government’s schemes benefitted the tribal community, THE INDIAN TRIBAL reports
Screen Grab Of PM Narendra Modi Replying To Motion OF Thanks On President's Address
New Delhi
Tribals continued to hold centrestage of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech for the second consecutive day on Thursday as he replied to the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address in the Rajya Sabha.
A day after he hit out at Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury in Lok Sabha for “insulting” President Droupadi Murmu (with his ‘rashtrapatni remark), Modi singled out Congress for his attack in the Upper House saying, “Had Congress worked with good intentions for tribals, I would not have to work so hard in the third decade of 21st century. Congress created hurdles in development. India lost six decades while smaller countries progressed.”
Accusing the main opposition party of indulging in appeasement politics, Modi made a big announcement by pledging “to achieve saturation levels in schemes to benefit everyone during ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Kaal’”. This is true secularism, he asserted.
Prime Minister Modi said 100% saturation in all schemes will put an end to all kind of appeasement. True secularism is making sure that the benefits of different government schemes reach all eligible beneficiaries, he stressed.
“For decades, the development of tribal communities was neglected. The Congress only engaged in ‘tokenism’ and never tried to find permanent solutions to problems confronting the country. We gave top priority to their welfare. People of the country are repeatedly rejecting Congress. People are watching them and punishing them. The country is with us,” Prime Minister Modi maintained.
Speaking about what his Government did for the tribal community, Modi said, “We identified 110 aspiration districts in the country. Education, infra, and health have improved in these districts due to continued focus and performance review. This has benefitted more than 3 crore tribals.”
“They (Congress) used to say ‘Gareebi Hatao’ but did nothing for over 4 decades. While we work hard to meet the expectations and aspirations of the people of the country,” Modi said.
With Opposition sloganeering and demanding a JPC probe into the Adani controversy, the PM said the more ‘keechad’ you throw at us, the lotus will bloom even more.
Tribals will play a key role in deciding the fate of parties in the Assembly polls in 13 States in the next year and a half leading to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. As many as 404 Assembly seats reserved for Scheduled Tribes and 47 ST Lok Sabha seats will be up for grabs.

Congress MP Manish Tewari in a press statement said, “Attitude of the government is that there is no inflation in the country, people are not suffering. Everything is hunky dory. If that's your response to concerns of opposition articulating the voice of 140 cr people of the country, why listen”.
Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury was also seen dissatisfied with the debate in the house. “The prices are rising, people are facing issues, but they (govt) don't care. Farmers give call for ‘rail roko’ on February 18: Key points

NEW DELHI: After organising a tractor rally in the capital on Republic Day and a road blockade earlier this month, the farmers on Wednesday announced a four-hour nationwide ‘rail roko’ protest on February 18 to mark their protest against the three farm laws. Besides, they have also decided to stop the toll collection in Rajasthan from February 12. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in the Lok Sabha that the changes made by way of the new farm laws are optional besides the wholesale markets and minimum support price (MSP) have not been discontinued. The opposition Congress replied that the PM did not satisfy the concerns of the farmers. Here are the key developments of the day: 1. Intensifying their agitation against the three new agricultural laws, protesting farmer unions on Wednesday announced a four-hour nationwide ‘rail roko’ (railway blockade) on February 18. In a statement, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), which is spearheading the protest, also announced that toll collection will not be allowed in Rajasthan from February 12. “There will be a ‘rail roko’ across the country from 12 pm to 4 pm on February 18,” the SKM said in the statement. Earlier this month, they had observed a three-hour road blockade to press their demand of repealing the three laws. 2. After its members walked out of Lok Sabha during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech, the Congress said its leaders were forced to do so as the PM did not say anything to satisfy its concerns over the farm laws. “We thought the prime minister will talk about some important steps for the welfare of the farmers. Over 206 farmers have lost their lives, but the prime minister is not willing to say anything about it,” Congress’s leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury told reporters outside Parliament. As the prime minister defended the three farm laws during his reply to the debate on the motion of thanks to the President for his address, the opposition members including Chowdhury repeatedly disrupted his speech. “He was talking about what his government has done for farmers and in that he also said the farm laws would benefit some people… But I said why are you bringing a law which is not beneficial for all. You say all is well, if that is so, what is the need to bring the laws,” Chowdhury said. He is the prime minister of all, and all farmers want that these farm laws to be withdrawn, the Congress leader said. The Congress leader said the laws should be withdrawn and new ones should be brought only after thorough consultation with the farmers. 3. The PM, while replying to the discussion on the motion of thanks to the President’s address, alleged that the uproar and attempts at disruption were part of a well-planned strategy to ensure that truth doesn’t come out in the open. He said that the new laws only offer an “option” to farmers and the existing systems will stay, so there was no reason to oppose them. He said reforms are needed in every sphere for the progress of society. PM Modi said that the Congress and other parties have failed to pinpoint the provisions which they find problematic, following which the Congress members raised slogans demanding the repeal of the laws and walked out of the House. 4. Taking Prime Minister Narendra Modi on over the new farm legislation, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said his heart beats only for his “billionaire friends” and promised that her party will scrap the laws if it comes to power. At a ‘kisan panchayat’ organised by the party at Chilkana in Saharanpur district, she accused Modi of “insulting” farmers who are protesting against the laws, caring little for their viewpoint. “You have seen the 56-inch chest, in which there is a small heart that beats only for his billionaire friends. He doesn’t understand how farmers feel,” the Congress general secretary said. She called the three agri-marketing laws “demonic”. “If voted to power, the Congress will scrap these laws. Farmers will get the MSP (minimum support price). Laws will be made to help you, not oppress you,” she said. 5. Defending the farm laws as much needed reforms, Prime Minister Narendra Modi underlined that change is essential and cited the case of CCA, a British era post in Tamil Nadu for supplying cigars to the then UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill that was not abolished till several decades after independence. Speaking in Lok Sabha on the motion of thanks to the President for his address, Modi said change and reforms are essential for the progress of every modern society. To buttress his point for change, Modi cited a story of CCA, Churchill Cigar Assistant, in the office of Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu. The post was specifically created for ensuring the supply of cigar to Churchill from Tiruchirappalli in the state. Despite Churchill losing in 1945 and India becoming independent in 1947, the post continued till several decades later and the fact came to light when the state government set up a commission for raising the salaries of government employees. The CCA wrote to the Commission seeking a raise but no one was even aware that such a post existed. This incident is the biggest example of a need for change in governance for the progress of the society, Modi suggested. 6. Maharashtra deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar said the demands raised by farmers during their ongoing protest near Delhi are not wrong or unreasonable, and asked the centre to accept the same. Reacting to Prime Minister Narendra Modi getting emotional on Tuesday while recollecting his association with Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, Pawar told reporters here that he will feel satisfied if the same sentiments are visible in the case of farmers also. “The demand raised by farmers is not wrong, it is not unreasonable. It is the sentiment of a farmer that he gets proper compensation in return of his hard work. It is his right. The Centre should accept that just demand,” Pawar said. A way has to be found to resolve the deadlock (over the agri laws), the NCP leader said. “He (Modi) became emotional while remembering old times (of association with Azad)…Will feel satisfied if the same emotions are visible in the case of farmers too,” said Pawar, who is also the finance minister of Maharashtra. 7. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the government empathises with the protesting farmers. “We are open to modifications in farm laws if that is in the greater interest of farmers,” he said. He said the lower house, the BJP-led NDA government and all respect the farmers who are voicing their views on the farm bills. This is the reason why topmost ministers of the government are constantly talking to them. There is great respect for the farmers, he said. “He said all provisions in new farm laws are “optional”, and nothing is “compulsory”. Old mandis have not closed down. On the contrary, the government has worked for their modernisation, he said. 8. As the prime minister spoke, leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury interrupted him on multiple occasions. The PM first told him that he had come to his use. “Your protest has reached the desirable place,” the PM said in an obvious reference to Congress president Sonia Gandhi. As Chowdhury interrupted the PM’s speech, Rahul Gandhi was sitting right behind him. The PM once sat down allowed Chowdhury to complete his interjection. Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla too asked Chowdhury to take his seat saying he had got ample time and opportunity to put his points across. When he did not stop despite these, the PM became stren and told him not to create an excess of disturbance. “I respect you. But now this is getting too much,” the PM said. He said those who are disrupting the House are doing so as per a well-planned strategy. They are unable to digest that people are seeing through the truth, he added. The Congress MPs subsequently boycotted the PM’s speech after raising slogans and walked out of the House. 9. The PM said he had heard a new thing this time that no one had asked for the farm reforms and why did the government legislate the farm laws. He said laws were made against dowry, triple talaq and child marriage, despite no demand from any quarter. Reformers like Raja Ram Mohun Roy and BR Ambedkar went against the tide to reform the society. The PM spoke against hanging on to the status quo mentality and said the country’s youth will not wait forever for reforms. During Independence India had 28 per cent landless labourers while the latest census puts the figure at 55 per cent. He lamented that not enough investment, modernisation has gone into the agriculture sector. “We need to study global demands and change our agricultural practices accordingly.” 10. Modi quoted former prime minister Chaudhary Charan Singh who in one of his books had written that the whole of the country should be considered a unitary place for agricultural purposes and additional tax should be levied on transportation of agricultural produce. He also quoted NCP supremo and former Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar in the Manmohan Singh government who alleged that there was a nexus of the middlemen and that agricultural produce market committee (APMC) reforms were necessary to safeguard the interests of the farmers. But now he was saying just the opposite. “Therefore, sometimes I doubt about the reason behind his present stand,” the PM said. (With agency inputs)

A temple is absolutely not a political stage, it is a place for people to contemplate the divine and do their prayers and it is a personal choice – Shashi Tharoor, Senior Congress Leader
Amid the row over the Left skipping out of the grand consecration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya on January 22 and doubts around the participation of other top Opposition leaders invited to the event, Senior Congress leader and MP Shashi Tharoor has said the invitees should be able to make their choice in the matter.
Tharoor said the Opposition leaders should not be branded ‘anti-Hindu’ if they don’t attend the consecration of the Ram Temple and neither should they be seen to be “playing into BJP hands” if they do.
Speaking to reporters as reported by ANI , the Thiruvananthapuram MP, taking a dig at a section of the media, said, “(There are attempts at) Putting the Congress leadership in a box and saying that if you go, that means you are playing into the hands of the BJP. If you don’t go, that means you are anti-Hindu. Let the individuals make a reasonable choice,” Tharoor said.
On whether giving the consecration of the Ram Temple a miss could hurt the prospects of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha polls next year, Tharoor said, “People are trying to make it a political issue but is that fair?”
“Going to a temple is an individual decision. Individuals have been invited, let them make their own decisions. To my mind, a temple is absolutely not a political stage, it is a place for people to contemplate the divine and do their prayers and it is a personal choice. Individuals have been invited and letting individuals decide if they wish to go is my stand,” the Congress MP added.
Claiming that he was yet to receive a formal invite to attend the Ram Temple consecration, Tharoor said, “As far as I am concerned, I have not been invited, so I don’t have to make the decision. But my own view is that I don’t think of the temple as a political stage and if it is a political event, then it is not the same as going to the temple to pray. Going to the temple to pray to my mind is a different exercise. From going to the temple to attend a huge political gathering for political speeches led by political politicians, or for those reasons, I am not terribly inclined to see the issue in those terms.”
The MP informed further that three or four members of his party have been invited to the event.
“In my mind, let individuals make their own decision, as it is a personal choice. If the party takes a collective decision, they will let us know, but right now, three or four members have been invited from the party, and they will certainly be making the decisions,” Tharoor added.
Earlier, the chairman of the Ayodhya Ram Mandir Construction Committee invited former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and the party’s leader in the Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury for the consecration ceremony. However, the attendance of senior Congress leaders has not yet been confirmed by the party.

NEW DELHI: India’s government has cut off advertisements to at least three major newspaper groups in a move that executives and an opposition leader said was likely retaliation for unfavourable reports.
Critics have said that freedom of the press has been under attack since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government first took office in 2014 and journalists have complained of intimidation for writing critical stories.
Now the big newspaper groups, which have a combined monthly readership of more than 26 million, say they are being starved of government ads worth millions of rupees that began even before Modi was elected to power last month with a landslide mandate.
“There is a freeze,” an executive at Bennett, Coleman & Co that controls the Times of India and The Economic Times, among the country’s biggest English-language newspapers, said. “Could be (because of) some reports they were unhappy with,” the executive said, seeking anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the press.
Around 15% of the Times group’s advertising comes from the government, the executive said. The ads are mostly government tenders for contracts as well as publicising government schemes.
The ABP Group, which publishes The Telegraph that has run reports questioning Modi’s record on everything from national security to unemployment, has seen a similar 15 percent drop in government advertisements for around six months, two company officials said.
“Once you don’t toe the government line in your editorial coverage and you write anything against the government, then obviously the only way they can penalise you (is) to choke your advertising supply,” the first ABP official said.
The second ABP official said that there had been no communication from the government, and the company was looking to other sources to plug the gap.
“Press freedom must be maintained and it will be maintained despite these things,” the official said. Both also sought anonymity.
Satyendra Prakash, director general of the Bureau of Outreach and Communication, the agency responsible for advertisements from the federal government, did not reply to Reuters emails or phone calls seeking comment.
But a spokesman for Modi’s ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party said the press in India remained fully free.
Nalin Kohli said there was ample criticism against the ruling party in newspapers and on TV news channels. “That’s testimony of freedom of speech,” he said, “The suggestion that the BJP is throttling free press is ridiculous.”
India ranked 140th out of 180 in the 2019 World Press Freedom Index, lower than countries like Afghanistan, Myanmar and the Philippines. It ranked 80th out of 139 countries surveyed when the index was started in 2002.
The Hindu newspaper group also saw government advertising plunge after publishing investigative stories on a multi-billion dollar deal to buy combat planes from France’s Dassault that strengthened an opposition campaign alleging government wrongdoing, a company official said.
The government rejected the accusation.
A leader of the main opposition Congress told parliament this week the government was trying to bring the three newspaper groups to heel.
“The undemocratic and megalomaniac style of stopping government advertisement is a message to media from this government to toe its line,” Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said.
Chief executive officers of all three newspaper groups did not respond to Reuters emails.

Forced to walkout in Lok Sabha as PM did not say anything to satisfy concerns over farm laws: Congress

NEW DELHI: After its members walked out of Lok Sabha during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech, the Congress on Wednesday said its leaders were forced to do so as the PM did not say anything to satisfy its concerns over the farm laws. “We thought the prime minister will talk about some important steps for the welfare of the farmers. Over 206 farmers have lost their lives, but the prime minister is not willing to say anything about it,” Congress’ leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury told reporters outside Parliament. As the prime minister defended the three farm laws during his reply to the debate on the motion of thanks to the President for his address, the opposition members including Chowdhury repeatedly disrupted his speech. The PM alleged that the uproar and attempts at disruption were part of a well-planned strategy to ensure that truth doesn’t come out in the open. “Six letters — REPEAL. You have already said it can be suspended for 18 months, so if you can suspend it for 18 months, why can’t it be withdrawn,” he asked. The Congress leader said the laws should be withdrawn and new ones should be brought only after thorough consultation with the farmers. “We don’t just oppose for the sake of it, we oppose as we cannot see farmers in such a state. What kind of country are you building where nails are put on the ground, barbed wires are put near protest sites,” he said, criticising the government. “We believed that the prime minister will take note of what we are saying and will say something to satisfy our concerns (on the farm laws), but nothing of that sort happened, so we were forced to walk out,” he said. As the Congress members, including Rahul Gandhi, were leaving the House midway in his speech, PM Modi took a dig at the opposition party. “The condition of the Congress party, a very old party which ruled the country for about six decades, has now become such that its Rajya Sabha unit moves in one direction while the Lok Sabha unit moves in another direction,” Modi said. Such a “divided” and “confused” party can neither do any good for itself nor can it think of any solution to the country’s problems, the prime minister said.
