Starstruck: A Stammering Adrien AU Moment

One day, while hanging out with Adrien, Aurore notices something familiar about her friend's mother, and can't help but be curious

Aurore: *sees a picture of Adrien with his mom* Uh... Adrien?

Adrien: Yeah?

Aurore: What is your mom's maiden name?

Adrien: Huh? Oh. G-G-G-Graham De Vanilli.

Aurore: Wait... Your mom... Is Emilie Graham De Vanilli?... SQUEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Adrien: *covering his ringing ears* Ouch...

Is this a safe space to talk about how marichat is the best and leat unhealthy relationship on that godforsaken show?? Let's look at the facts:

In Ladynoir, Ladybug is in love with someone else, and therefore, the relationship is immediately uneven: Chat Noir is head-over-heels in love with a girl who feels the same for a different person, and it just. Doesn't. Work. The feelings might be there for her, but he will always love her more, it's unhealthy, it's toxic. He's in love with a perfect person, who makes mistakes but will always fix it like magic; who holds the weight of the world on her shoulders and would never be able to truly prioritise him; who is just never going to feel as free as he does, because her civilian identity is just as real to her as Ladybug, if not more. He wants her to be perfect, and even though he accepts she isn't, there's always the expectation of doing the right thing no matter what, or fixing what's wrong whatever it takes and she's just... Not that. She tries to do good, but Marinette fails more than ladybug succeeds, and no matter how often she fixes her wrongs he doesn't want that. He wants the confidence of ladybug more than he wants her ugly sides. Her jealousy, her insecurities, her doubts. He loves a mask, and she can't love him back because she believes he's the same.

In Adrianette, it's literally the same thing, but somehow worst?? She's so insecure she does things that no unreasonable amount of alcohol could even justify, and she does it all while sober. She tries again and again to confess her feelings, only for everything to blow up on her face. The worst part is that she tries. She tries so much it hurts. Ladybug knows about Chat Noir's feelings, and lets him down as gently as she can, but Adrien?? He has no. idea. Not a clue, not a hint of understanding. He genuinely thinks she's a great friend, and it's saaad! Even if he does have feelings for her, he's in so much denial he can't see what's right there, what everyone else does. So she keeps trying, and she keeps failing, and he keeps not knowing any better. For a relationship between the two to even be possible, someone has to say something, and it would be. So. Uncomfortable. He would know how long she's loved him. He would think (or maybe know) she loves the idea of him more than who he is, because no matter how close they are, that's not him. That's a facade, a well crafted lie to keep the world away from his weaknesses, to keep his father from disappointment, to keep himself with the little control he's allowed. He's Chat Noir just as much as he's Adrien, and he would inevitably find out that Marinette doesn't like Chat like that. She loves him, but she's in denial about that, and regardless, no one knows how close they are so she just... Overcompensates. She says he's reckless, he's not funny, he's this, he's that and it would just break him to know it's a lie, and a fascination and idealisation more than love. He's Adrien, but he's also Chat Noir. He feels free as his hero persona, like he doesn't have to pretend, to have a mask of perfection. He's still kind, but now he cracks unfunny jokes while making her feel special. He allows himself to be mad, immature, unreasonable even, and she says she doesn't like that, because she wants him to know she loves him, but he knows that's not him so it just... Doesn't work.

For Ladrien, it should be perfect. He loves her, she loves him, but like I said. They're both masks. She likes the model, he likes the hero. They don't know each other, not really, and anything that breaks their carefully curated image could break them just as quickly. They aren't real, and neither wants to believe it. They make themselves perfect for the other, and it kills who they truly are in the process.

Now, marichat isn't the healthiest, I'll admit. He knows her as his civilian self but can't tell her just as she knows him as her superhero persona but can't tell him. But Marinette is not supposed to know Chat Noir, and Chat Noite is not supposed to know Marinette, so they just allow themselves to meets each other in a different light. He meets her outside of her crush, learns that she's capable of having a regular conversation without blushing or staggering over her own words. He learns she's stressed, and how hard she tries and how truly good she is without having to wear a mask around her. So he tells her he feels lonely, because no matter how close he gets to people (I imagine Nino to be the only person who gets to see more of him), he still feels the need to lie, or his identity could be at risk. Or his friends could be at risk. He talks about feeling trapped, and not having a choice, and wishing ladybug felt as free as he does and trusted him as he does her and Marinette just... Listens. She feels like she can't help him as ladybug, there's too much on the line, but Marinette? She can help. She can listen, and validate him, and say how important he is to ladybug and how much everyone trusts him, because her best friend runs a blog dedicated to the superheros, so of course she can tell how important he is to ladybug. She doesn't judge him for crying, or for deflecting, she doesn't act like she's in love whenever he smiles or flirts, because she loves him after already knowing who he is. And in return, so does he. Adrien falls for Marinette just as Ladybug falls for Chat Noir, but they can't say that. Admitting how they really feel would raise questions, questions they can't answer, so they just talk, and they just listen. She listens to him explaining that his feelings for ladybug go beyond the mask, but she also ends up making him see that without the mask, she's a stranger. He listens to her frustrations about the boy she likes, and can't help but make her see the facade. She loves Adrien, and he loves Ladybug, but they don't know the real person, not really. So they fall for each other. Two broken hearts, learning to grow and helping each other realise they don't need perfect. Hell, they don't even want perfect, they just want to feel in control, and that's just not the way love works, is it? They learn to let go, to lose the control and to actually fall. To fall in love without a rope to hold them back, without a parachute to offer resistance. They fall headfirst, with their eyes wide open and the trust that the other will be there to fall with, to make sure it doesn't hurt. It's not perfect, but they see everything. They can't have each other, but they can know the truth. They know that no matter what, someone understands them. Someone knows who they truly are. And it's real, and it's impossible. So they fall, but they know it can't be, so they let it be. They are friends who are in love with each other, because they would rather fight those feelings than lose what they have. Chat Noir loves Marinette, and she knows that. Marinette loves Chat Noir, and he knows that. But they can't be a thing, and they know that. They accept it. It's hard, and it hurts, but they are the only real thing they've even known, so as long as they don't have to leave, they're okay. It's tragic, but they wouldn't trade it for the world.

there is a world where they'll start dating as ladrien, or as marichat, but on this one? They know the risks. They understand why it's wrong, and why they can't, and why they're better off as friends. So they stay like that. Pretending like the live is purely platonic, when thy both know better. Pretending like their other personas don't know the other like they do, and living like that until it comes the time they'll be able to stop pretending. It's a dream, but it's possible and it keeps them going.

As absolutely bonkers as Miraculous Ladybug can be, the writers were fucking inspired for making the human embodiment of destruction the Sweetest, Saddest Dork in the world. All Adrien wants is to make stupid puns and hang out with his friends even though his shitty dad won’t let him, but he can also level entire cities. The power to reduce a person to ash from the inside out rests in the hands of a boy about to cry because Alya, Nino, and Marinette gave him a card wishing him a “pawsome” birthday

the thing about adrinette vs any of the other girls who crush on adrien and call him perfect is that the other girls mean their idea of him, and if he starts acting outside of what they expect, they're like, adrien no this is not your heart, but it is!!

meanwhile marinette fell for him when he admitted to being socially awkward then laugh like a dork at the umbrella closing on her and still thinks he's perfect when she's seen him question himself and be a weirdo and hit his head on the car frame getting in. you know adrien can be an entire freak with her and she'd just fold that into her world view without question and he'll stay perfect in her eyes cause it's not about who she thinks he is for her, it's about how he surprises her with who he is
