I took a pencil and a sheet of paper, sat down in front of the mirror — to get a better view of my interlocutor — and decided to start right from the heart of it. “Alexander Nikolayevich,” I said, “what concerns you the most? On stage, I mean.” The question was phrased cleverly, subtly. I walked right into the trap. “How can I put this... On stage,” I said, “I've always been afraid! I used to think: any moment now, someone will jump up, someone will shout: ‘Ladies and gentlemen! But this is a lie! A fraud! This doesn't happen! What's he singing about? Love? What love? Nonsense! To hell with it! Get him off the stage!’ And everything would plunge into the abyss. The sheet music, the flowers, the grand piano… everything would spiral down... People, animals — it would all blur together. Someone would trample me underfoot, screaming: ‘Take that! And that! And that!’ — and my heart would start to ring and burst like a soap bubble! But really, if you think about it — what is an actor? A person who lays claim to the audience’s time and attention. It’s as if he says: ‘Look at me! Listen to me! Submit to me!’ But in order to hold the attention of busy, serious, working people — you have to be endlessly fascinating, significant, multifaceted. And what do we actors know for sure? Nothing.”

okay im not sure if it counts (and what's considered 'old') buttttt the thing is it was majorly bands back then, — with the ✨frontman✨ usually being the primary lyricist/songwriter — SO
okay and with this last outlier im done 🙈
thank you liz<3 i love that first band im listening to the whole album rn and im very into this cover art. 'nothin to smile about in my life'
and Palestinskoe tango is beautiful, ''where sorrow flies away and melts''.. I've heard of aleksandr vertinsky before and im looking forward to read some of his writing someday- til then im listening to his songs. there's a part in palestinian tango which im tryin to translate: ''and the people here are shy and wise and the sky blue as glass/and im tired of the lies and powder/ i was at peace and feeling light here'' would that be correct?

The Inevitability of Change--Sambar (reblogged)
The Inevitability of Change: Sambar (reiteration) Posted by KOOLKOSHERKITCHEN on AUGUST 21, 2023 This story starts with a song so well known around the world that even Cynthia Lennon, John Lennon’s first wife, made a recording of it. Very few people know, however, that it was written in 1926 for a famous Russian emigre artist Alexander Vertinsky, “the Black Pierrot,” as his stage persona was…

Quote
What strange is ... I used to write poetry ... And now, instead of that, I only want to write letters to you. Apparently, this is because love is more powerful than art. I don't want to "make up" anything. If only it was possible to write just about you all the time ?
Alexander Vertinsky (1889-1957), from a letter to his future wife, Lidiya Tsirgvava (1923-2013) August 6, 1940 “Вот странно...Раньше я писал стихи...А теперь, вместо этого, мне хочется только писать Вам письма. Потому что, очевидно, любовь сильнее искусства. Мне не хочется ничего „придумывать“. Вот если бы можно было все время писать о Вас ?“ --  Лидия Вертинская, “ Синяя птица любви”

Mr. Vertinsky's immense popularity in Russia is due to the peculiar style of his songs. He sang in the costume of Pierrot, his face was pale and at times almost motionless, as if at any moment he were ready to faint, contorted with a grimace of grief, and his hands folded in a gesture of prayer, barely visible from under his clothes. During the performance he made only two or three movements of them. With all of it, he comes to the audience. With a harmless feathered mask, eyes of a man in love with the moon, with submissive and pathetic naivety... In his poems, Mr. Vertinsky used to praise the heavy, gloomy, and sometimes jokingly ironic sentimentality of people from high society: shallow, flaming individuals, devoid of intellectual elegance, but living as if with a certain timidity, backlash and shame before their mental nakedness. In such an hour of intimate confessions, Mr. Vertinsky offers us to rattle on about imaginary aristocrats who flirt and play with those who lose their minds — deeper feelings are incomprehensible to them. Here are cheerful cockatoos, which are like idols in Adjara — even the birds seem to dream of pure love, amusing themselves with a bunch of violets. Here are the creatures filling the dance floor: young folks, rich, perverted and mentally poor, who seek some higher mysticism and find it in gypsy romance. All these dreamy moods were captured by Mr. Vertinsky. In melancholy he showed us the desperately empty soul of a representative of high society, observing from the outside and reflecting. Of course, the heroes of the high society, served as an unattainable example to countless masses of petty and colorless individuals in the hunt for stronger, but accessible impressions. Mr. Vertinsky gave the public the desired sentiments, as necessary as tobacco, drugs, various liqueurs and aperitifs.
Stanislav Vinaver for Vreme. Belgrade, May 27, 1926

My translation of Я сегодня смеюсь над собой
All I do now is laugh at myself I want love that is not just pretending I want love with a fairy tale ending But its place is in books on the shelf
I'm so tired of powder and rouge And of mask of a tragical hero All I want is somebody who's near To forget artificial deluge
All I do now is laugh at myself I want love that is not just pretending I want love with a fairy tale ending Fairy tale that believes in itself
