Casey's London event

I'm just copying and pasting what I wrote on reddit just now, on here

I was at Casey's London event today and I thought there was a few things of note people might want to know before they float out of my head:

Someone asked about how involved they felt with the original movie and then the sequel. And they were saying they felt involved cos Matthew would text being like 'What are six of Alex's favourite albums?' and then include what Casey said. They said the story about Taylor being so close to their face and saying 'is this weird?' to them giving them psychological collaspe.

When speaking about the sequel, they said 'wrote' so it sounds like it's written now. They said they've spoken to a number of the cast and crew and they're all excited to see these characters more. They said it was in pre-production(I think, something along those lines anyway)

They talked a lot about how they see movie Alex and Henry as different to book Alex and Henry. That they were 'very aware' of AU fanfictions and it was similar to that. I asked them when I got to speak to them had they ever read any of the fanfic and they said 'legally I can't answer, and I don't know what you're talking about' jokingly so I'm taking that as a giant yes(I also told them I wrote 'a load of fic' which now feels mad to me that I said that)

They were saying how they had an idea to write a sort of 'epistolary novella' of a time during Henry's bonus chapter because it spanned six years and there were interesting time periods within that six years. And they were like 'I'm not sure of the interest' and everyone was like 'Yes, please, give that to us', but they said it was just an idea they had, and there was no contract about it, and there was lots of other things they wanted to write first.

They were saying, again with the AU, that they were aware with Alex and Henry, that people kind of took them and created their own ideas about them, and that was great. But that they'd seen comments being like 'London Boy is so Henry' and Casey was like 'No Alex is not a fan of the Britishness, like that is a song Henry would play to torment Alex'.

They were also saying again with the whole them being different in the book/movie and book Alex having a sister and divorced parents and and movie Alex being older and then Lex interviewing them said 'and taller' and it just made me laugh, because I was thinking the exact same thing.

They also said Henry is the youngest child in the book, and being a youngest child themselves, they know there's a completely different vibe to being a middle child, like in the movie.

They said they'll be working on their next book 'for a minute' but that it was WLW and there was an element of fantasy to it.

I'm blanking if there was anything else, but they were so nice, and also oh my god so beautiful in real life. I also got to show them my RWRB tattoo which they said was beautiful, and just say how much I loved all their books, but just how very much 'this particular book(while they were signing one of my three RWRB's I brought with me) meant to me and thank you for creating it and they were like 'thank you for taking it in to your heart'. Which just, guh.

They talked about The Pairing quite a bit too, obviously cos that was what the event was about, and the first question the interview asked was 'What do you think the sexiest pastry is? Like the most fuckable, not in a physical way, but like a mental way' and I feel like that set the whole tone for the night. They both said eclair.

since it's bi week i wanna talk about henry's reaction to alex coming out to him. my feeling from reading tags in gifsets and comments on videos is that people think henry's pause and little chuckle of disbelief is him being like "obviously, we just had gay sex." but i do think it's also partly him being, like, really aware of how wrong he was. and how right he was! it's like in the book where he has this waging war of feelings that is "i had suspicions you might want me too." vs. "i never imagined you'd love me back." etc. he probably SENSED alex was queer for a while, at least since he genuinely became friends, but in that moment it really is confirmed that.

and it's special that alex shares that part of himself with him.

that entire scene has so much charged energy. because they are in the afterglow but there is also the fact that they very obviously have feelings for each other that they're trying to make seem smaller than they are. but coming out and specifically coming out to henry is a big deal to alex, because coming out as bi can be a different kind of terrifying because biphobia exists within and outside of the community. what made rwrb so special to me is that henry never makes a big deal out of alex being bi, i'd argue he even enjoys it since he named his dog after david bowie, so was very openly bisexual.*

*david bowie did retract coming out as bi at a certain point because he felt it was all people talked about and overshadowed him/his work, however later on in life he did clarify multiple times that he was always bisexual. which furthers why characters like acd are so important as well.

i just really love how rwrb handled alex's sexuality and henry's reaction as a non-reaction. as if it's of course. because it is of course. no one should ever push back against it, but we always expect them to. and that scene showcases both of those things in one go.

Fic Pride Game✨

since my summaries tend to be excerpts from my fics--and to interject why i'm proud because i'm chatty today--i rewrote them for this game. sorted by most recent publishing date.

Winter Interlude (FirstPrince, RWRB) - Alex and Henry go sledding. This one makes me proud because how quickly and confidently I wrote it. I am an absolute snail so even with this fic being only 1.3k, it's wild for me that it took me like a half hour to write it. It was also the first time I felt like I was finally hearing the voices for Alex and Henry.

a lifetime of promises and a world of dreams (Taynick, RWRB RPS) - A non-linear Taynick fic basically. Yep, this fandom old does RPF. I stand with the philosophy don't like, don't read and characters are based on public personae. This fic was the first I had written in over four years and it just felt good to get back into writing. It's my second longest fic at 10k and some of the lines here are my favorite things I've ever written.

Feel So Much Spring (Reddie, IT) - A modern setting meet-cute that takes place in an ER. I like this one because I feel that it's the best job I've ever done of capturing chemistry when two characters meet and why they'd be into each other? Also I find dialogue very hard to write and it's especially hard with Eddie and Richie who are very much comedians and I'm really pleased the dialogue here. It's a fic I'll skim and wonder "why can't I write like this always?" I love it from first to last word.

Transient (Stony, MCU) - Per-Serum Steve meets Tony in the 1940s. It's another fic where I wish I could recreate my headspace. I'm often too comfortable being sparse because I feel like the more I write, the more chance for crap. It's still an under 5k special but I think I did a good job with the imagery of sex and depth of fondness. I feel like I met my intent. Also ties for my favorite Steve POV--he aches so much here.

I Watch Your Fingers Working Overtime (Stony, MCU) - Established Steve and Tony make the best of a heatwave. I strive for my smut to be poetic and I super indulged with this one. I don't know, it might be too purple but I'm happy with it. And it shares the top podium with Transient for favorite Steve POV.

In Our Bedroom, After the War (Stony, MCU) - After the culling of half the planet, Steve and Tony find solace in one another. Another Steve POV that I'm proud of. It was different for me, a bit of character study. As well, one of the few times I've tried my hand at angst.

Lovesick (Stony, MCU) - Tony takes care of a sick Steve. My most kudo'd fic! Made it to 1k. So that's a huge deal for me. Also it's silly with fluff and softness. Just a sweet time.

More Than the Average Good (Stony, MCU) - Tony comes to the Steve's rescue post-TWS. This one was written for an exchange and as I was writing it kept getting longer and become more of a challenge. I’m proud of the effort I put into it and it forcing me to write a lengthier road to romance.

Covered In Lines (Stony, MCU) - Teacher/Student AU where Tony wants his Lit professor. This is the first fic where I really felt like I got the characterization down for Steve and Tony and truly found my style of writing. Also my favorite fandom writer left a comment and that blew my mind.

A Battle Not Worth Winning (Cartinelli, MCU) - A getting together fic where Peggy finally gives into Angie. This was my first wlw fic and I love how it turned out. I have a great amount of affection for my attempt at Peggy's POV.

The time of my life by @mirilyawrites (Loki) This fic made such an impression on me because it SOUNDS like it should be an AU (dirty dancing-inspired) but mirilya seamlessly threaded it into canon and it just WORKS.

The Perils of Midsomer Residency by @clottedcreamfudge (RWRB) Murder Mystery AU. I just recc'd this fic to someone else the other day (because of the Hot Fuzz references) so it's on my mind. Just such a perfect encapsulation of firstprince and also all of those British murder mystery shows (why are there so many of them???).

6. Recommend a fic that does something cool with format or structure (epistolary, social media, 5 things, non-linear, etc.)

A couple of new ones, still anonymous from the AWY collection: Rather Inevitable by anonymous (RWRB) Hockey AU. Mostly told through an article Henry writes about his relationship with hockey and Alex.

king & lionheart by anonymous (RWRB) Fantasy/medieval AU. Told as a character telling a story interspersed with 'in situ' scenes of the action of that story. I'm explaining it poorly. Just go read it!

7. Recommend a fic that uses a trope you love.

the stolen hearts of things by @ninzied (RWRB) Heist AU. I love that this is a heist fic, so I'm counting that, although the real trope that's in here is not one I can list for spoiler reasons.

8. Recommend a fic with an interesting premise/concept.

Low-Key Coffee by sirnotappearinginthisarchive (Loki) Not-quite-a-coffee-shop-AU. Loki is trapped in an alternate universe where he works at a coffee shop, and no one knows it but him. Also, there's a murder. The way the mystery unfolds in this is soooo good.

13. Recommend a fic you've re-read multiple times. (Is this where I admit I don't have a lot of fics I reread? Oh well, here's my most-reads)

Slow Show by mia_ugly (Good Omens) Actor AU. This set the platonic ideal of an actor AU for me and it remains my favorite. The nonlinear storytelling, the use of other media like interviews, the arc of their story... it's so good.

muddle through somehow by curtaincall (Good Omens) Christmas in Connecticut-inspired AU. Fake marriage and lots of comfort food. I read this every Christmas.

time to wonder, do I dare? by NoRationalThoughtRequired (Witcher) Bookstore/musician AU. Geralt owns a bookstore and Jaskier is a street musician. Just a lovely slow burn.

Cold Frost and Sunshine by @somedrunkpirate (TMFU) Hockey AU. How this fic deals with the trials and tribulations of an NHL athlete coming out is still one of the best I've ever read.

5. Red, White, and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston (book and movie)

This isn’t one of my four core fandoms, but I genuinely really love it. I think the book was better, but the movie adaptation was really good! It’s definitely one of the better adaptations I’ve seen. I think the main reason I love it is because I genuinely really like the characters (which is rare for me). Alex and Henry both have flaws, which I think is super important, and their dynamic has so much potential and is played out so gorgeously in their story.

4. Vicious by V. E. Schwab (book)

This is my second favourite book, but it lives rent-free in my head in a way that no other characters ever have. I relate so deeply to Victor, and I’m so fundamentally intrigued by Victor and Eli’s dynamic. I’ve made a fair few posts about that, so I think I might leave it here for the sake of not repeating myself, but just… yeah.

3. All of Our Demise by Amanda Foody and C. L. Herman (book)

This is the second book in the duology, and it is my favourite book of all time. I love the first book, but the second one??? Gavin and Alastair are my babies, and I adore them individually and together with all my heart. I remember thinking they had chemistry in the first book, but Alastair was with Isobel, so I didn’t think it would happen… and then I read book two. And I don’t think I’ll ever be over how fucking delighted I was. I think that specific feeling of not being queerbaited is part of why this book has stuck with me, but it’s also just so genuinely fun to read. I love this book so much.

2. BBC Merlin (TV)

This has been my favourite show since I was twelve years old, and I am not changing that now. (Sometimes I wonder if part of the reason I love it so much is because of the person who recommended it to me, but we don’t have time to get into all of that.) Look, I’m not saying that Merlin was the best show ever made, but I genuinely enjoy it so much. (And that’s not just me; everyone I’ve ever introduced it to has loved it.) Honestly, for me, a lot of it comes down to the characters again: Merlin and Arthur, obviously, but also Morgana, and I’m so intrigued by Mordred’s storyline, and the side characters are great, and I could just go on and on. But seriously, it’s my comfort show, and I just enjoy watching it so much.

Honestly, I spend so much of my day watching these men that it’s a little concerning. (In my defence, my chronic illness means that I have a whole lot of time.) The thing is, there have, historically, been very few things that genuinely make me laugh. And they manage it every time. I just genuinely really enjoy watching their videos, and I get so invested in their stories, too, because their characters are so well developed (especially considering they’re making it all up on the spot). Also, not to get all serious, but they’ve genuinely been so good for my mental health. I’d been struggling since I got ill (I’m doing somewhat better now), and finding the boys genuinely saved my life, and I’ll leave it there to avoid getting depressing, but… yeah.

Also, I got a second ask more recently that was the same thing, so I’m just going to consider this the answer to both instead of typing this all out twice. I hope that’s all right!

An Incomplete List: Eleven

This moment is actually my favorite scene of Nick's acting that we see in the film. It perfectly illustrates #11. Can you imagine how scary it must've been for Henry to go out in public after he was outed? And he was there in that car alone, he didn't even have Shaan in the car with him. (Shaan was waiting for him, so maybe that helped, but that drive had to have been agony.) He wasn't able to have any contact with the outside world other than this cruel moment where he had to face the reporters waiting on him. There was no back entrance the car could go to? Or maybe the driver wasn't told to go in any other way? It feels like this was a punishment, forcing Henry to face the cameras and shouting reporters. (Just like how they tried to hide his support from the people at Buckingham.) Whoever made those decisions didn't care how it made Henry feel. He had no support from anyone here and broke down, as anyone would. But here's the thing that's so damn amazing about Henry. He keeps going. He doesn't give in entirely to the sadness, to the terror and anxiety that had to have been threatening to consume him. He is so incredibly strong here. He's been trained to deal with the public who behave like they have a right to accost him, trained to fear what they may say about him, so he learned to behave in a way that meant there was nothing but good things for them to write about him (mostly). Still, no amount of training could have ever prepared him for being cut off from the man he loves, from all means of support (other than Bea and Shaan, who are also wrapped up in the Crown and struggling), from his best friend, and simultaneously dealing with the knowledge that everything he wrote to Alex, and Alex to him, and the V&A footage, that was out there for everyone to read or see. The way he must've felt so flayed open, so incredibly invaded to his core. But he still keeps going. He keeps trying. He takes a deep breath, let's it out, and even if he forces himself to wear a mask to get through the hell he's about to deal with, he never stops trying.

I truly love Henry Fox and all of his layers. He is one of the most amazing characters that I have ever had the pleasure of knowing, and loving in such a way that he feels real. When it comes to these stunningly intense moments, sometimes I feel like even I know too much about him, that I'm a witness to things he has never given me permission to see. That's how real Henry feels to me sometimes, and this moment here in the film, where we see him shatter, then pick himself up moments later and keep trying, keep living, even with seemingly no light at the end of the tunnel, it's why I think out of all the amazing moments in the book and movie, this one resonates with me above all others and has since the first day I watched it.

Carlos- I love to cook & I would definitely love to talk recipes- I don't always have the patience to make big, elaborate or complex things though. So I would love to discuss about things that can be made in a shorter time! But I would also love to talk about the elaborate recipes too!

Alexis- Honestly, she is one of my favorites on Schitt's Creek! Her growth as a character from how she was in season 1 to how she was in the later seasons is incredible! Also her stories about her travels pre-season 1 would be scarily interesting!

For this September, where we celebrate Bisexual Visibility, I wanted to share the characters that helped me find my queerness and accept my bisexuality 🩷💜💙

Amy Raudenfeld

I'll be the first one to admit that Faking It didn't aged pretty well, but when it aired, it became quickly one of my favorites because I was hypnotized by Amy. I didn't knew why at first, I just loved seeing her on the TV. Then I quickly learned that I liked her a little bit too much and had a gigantic crush on this character. The more Amy struggled to define her sexual identity due to her crush on her BFF, the more I related to her because I was experiencing something similar - Is just a pretty actress on a queer character? Why does it have this effect on me? Well, younger me, this was your bisexual awakening.

Alex Claremont-Diaz

Even though Amy had that gigantic effect on me, it wasn't until I read Red, White, and Royal Blue that I truly started to understand my bisexuality. The entire inner monologue that Alex has after Henry kisses him for the first time, while hilarious on its own way, was completely eye-opening. "Straight people, he thinks, probably don't spend this much time convincing themselves that they're straight," Alex says, and that hit me like a train. The first time I called myself a bisexual person was after finishing this book, and that is why I'll hold it near to my heart forever.

Michael Guerin

I finally accepted I was bi, now what? Well, now comes learning how do you feel about that? Look, I was raised Catholic, so there is always guilt laying around when it comes to sexuality. Enter the human disaster that is Michael Guerin and his one-liner, "I'm bisexual, is not that complicated." He came out to his family, he realized he was deeply in love with his high-school sweetheart, and he was openly bisexual without an ounce of shame or guilt. It was who he was. And that made realize, I am who I am, and I love that part of me.

There are probably more characters that helped here, but these three changed my life. Never let anyone tell you that representation doesn't matter, because it does and a lot. It help us not only see ourselves, but also found us and love us for who we are.

RWRB Thoughts: Happy One-Year Anniversary ❤️🤍💙

I think it’s safe to say my life changed because of this movie.

I didn’t buy the book with the thought of it being this significant, but the moment I started reading and followed the promo leading up to movie, I could tell this was something different. Something bigger.

For one, because of this movie, I was happier than I ever was since Form 6 Farewell in January 2022. Waking up happy to check out what updates there were, counting down the days to the movie’s release.

I cannot pin point what in particular made this so different, so much more to me. Whether that be seeing characters similar to me, even in age navigate a strange and wild world, or the delight of watching my book come to life on my screen brought, or finding comfort in seeing Alex and Henry come together and end up being the one pair in all of the historical queer couples they quoted in their email to announce their relationship, no hiding anymore, just being themselves, and being accepted.

And this is the first time I ever joined a fan community. Partly because I think I’m finally at the age where I know how to handle my online presence, partly because I was just bursting with excitement from the movie I needed a place to scream about it and be heard, be responded to, I joined Tumblr, and made so many now personal friends through the fandom. Friendship with different backgrounds, from different countries, all united by this love for this little movie, all sustained with a deeper connection.

I found people to turn to when things for me were getting too much, or when I needed advice but didn’t know where to turn to. I went to sleep crying from a big family argument and woke up to ten messages checking on me. I found another place to belong. A sanctuary.

The movie saved me. I was drowning and suffocating for most of the last quarter of 2023, and the one thing that kept me from sinking into the void was RWRB and the community I found.

On the day of my calculus exam, we got a sequel, and I felt such a burst of euphoria that I, someone who’s been terrified of maths exam and has never passed an advanced math exam, went into the venue feeling like I could conquer the world. This was the best I’ve ever done in Math since primary 6. I went from an F to a B+ in this course.

After sobbing my eyes out at Alex’s telling Henry “Nothing will ever happen to you” and being afraid that the same would apply to me, and asking advice from a lot, a lot of people, and reading about Alex’s story of finding a new dream, turning from politics to law, and Taylor’s story of giving up what his parents wanted from him (funnily enough, biochem) to pursue what he wanted, I gathered up my courage and applied for a program transfer, and got into the program I wanted in the first place. I think I’m gonna be a lot happier and more motivated now, and hopefully the demons will pop up a little less.

I could not have had the bravery to take my life into my own hands and break out of the path I was stuck on without RWRB, Alex and Henry, Taylor and Nicholas, and my many new friends inspiring and encouraging me to do so.

My life is better because of this movie. That’s insane, but it’s also the truth.

So happy anniversary to our little movie that’s not so little anymore. Happy one year to our Emmy-nominated, sequel-in-progress queer rom-com. I love you, I love you all. Thank you for all the wonders and salvation you brought me.

And I’m so excited for what comes next for us.

To preface this goes of book cannon, so characters like Leo, Cash and June are here! So yeah.

I was going to make three fics for you but my motivation decided to dip so I’m sorry, but yeah; you may have two other gifts coming during the year! Who knows- I really did want to write for the other prompts!

I took the prompt: firstprince, ringing in the new year as a family with kids

Alex and Henry have mixed feelings about new years. If you asked a Henry before Alex if he loved new years? He would say no, the need to be too proper and the loud firework displays of London and every where else in the UK and after his dad has passed having bad days due to debilitating grief. Henry before Alex hated new years, he detested it until Alex’s New Year’s Eve party and things change there.

But if you asked Alex, he’s always loved new years, the fireworks, the sparklers, the barbecue. He tried to bring that energy to his new years function that he held each year, but when Henry had attended and through his life upside down in the best way possible, Alex had adapted his way of celebrating with Henry, careful to avoid going outside to watch the displays on new years if Henry had a specifically bad days on Christmas or after it.

After each year with the other; after being outed, after they were out properly to the world and Alex’s mom was in office again were good. After years of just enjoying each others company, David’s also and a good few years of married new years nights and days they decided to have children and that made new years a lot more chaotic than even their first kiss new years had been.

The two girls, Elizabeth and Clementine had seen a few new years with Alex and Henry; both had taken Alex's love of new years and the traditions that the Claremont-Diaz family had for the new years nights in Texas. Due to spending so much time split between England; much to Henry’s dismay but the girls and Alex’s happiness of seeing the fireworks in London but the family have rarely spend a proper new years in America since the girls came into their lives, having the 1st of January or the 30th of December to celebrate the drawing close of a year over in America in a way the entire family preferred.

Normally Alex would be frantically packing the girls bag at 6 morning of the 31st of December or re packing he had left Clementine's favourite pair of boots to wear in the Uk and the girl had refused to go aware unless carried by Alex and Alex only, making the journey through customs and security a challenge. However today Alex didn't need to pack, cause they weren't going over the pond to England this year, he doesn’t know how Henry convince his family to let them miss new years in England this year but the light in the girls eyes when their dad told them they get to do new years in Texas? Whatever Henry did was worth it to see those little girls eyes widen like it was a second Christmas.

Getting the Claremont-Diaz family together in Texas was not as difficult a task as Henry had first thought, June, Pez and Nora where already on their ways over after no frantic call from Alex at four in the morning had happened. Oscar had said they never even need to bargain and he'd be there in four hours. Bea was over in London with the Fox-Mountchristen-Windsor's and had apologised for missing the girls first out of the Uk new years, Shaan and Zhara had also apologised for also being over the pond; the pair being family just as the rest.

Ellen, Leo, Amy and Cash where also on their ways as soon as the invites had been given out.

So the only thing now was to clean up and get ready for hosting new years.

This was eaiser said than done. Having two girls that were raised by Alex Claremont-Diaz, they were messy.

Cleaning up was rarely in the girls vocabulary so when Henry had been cleaning up the living room, Alex had taken the girls outside to get the garden ready; getting the girls and himself covered in dirt and mud in a record time of 10 minutes. So after baths and tidying of bathrooms and bedrooms and getting dressed, people arrived.

As the night drew on, Alex was outside with the girls, enjoying the sparklers that he had gone and brought at 3 pm as most of the Claremont-Diaz’s, Nora, Pez, Cash and Amy were all outside as well while Henry called his family and set up the news, so he could call his family in when the time came, avoiding the mass amount of noise that came from two screaming little girls being chased by hyper family when he was not exactly in the mindset of dealing with the volume, still in his Uk new years mind.

When it got closer to the time and the family had been called in, the girls had settled with Alex and Henry, perched between the couple and tucked up in pyjamas for when the clock hits twelve and they are sent off to bed. It’s one minute too and every one is waiting, the clock clicks slow, phones go off with happy new years from every other timezone that has already started the next year. It’s 30 seconds to, Clementine and Elizabeth both say that they love their family while almost falling asleep, the family their say it back and the girls are a sleep, so Alex turns down the TV.

It’s ten seconds to new years, quiet counting in the house starts in tandem with turned down yelling from the TV.

It’s five seconds, Henry and Alex have carefully picked up the girls, ready to take them to bed as the whole house whispers a “4,3,2,1”.

And it’s new years. Quiet cheers and hugs exchanged, kisses from on the lips to forehead kisses are shared where appropriate, on the TV and in the house. Hugs are given to all, Henry and Alex bring the girls upstairs, setting them in beds and whispering happy new years to them before leaving.

The walk down stairs is quiet, until Alex stops the pair and kisses Henry gently with a whispered, “Happy new years, Baby” that Henry responded with a gentle and quiet, “Happy new years, Dear”.

Before returning to the rest of their family, rather happily.

This broke me, healed me, and made me fall in love with every character all over again. Everyone's emotions towards the events are so nuanced and realistic, and the writing is soooo stunning. Just make sure to have tissues ready.

just letting you know this ask will contain sensitive issues regarding Jewish identity and negative criticism that I’ve seen about rwrb. So I understand if you don’t want to answer at all - but I just wanted to see what your thoughts were about this (as I haven’t read the book but absolutely adore the movie) - if you want to make a separate post or something.

I saw a post on my “for you” feed (can’t find it anymore) that apparently Matthew’s decision to conflate and change Nora and June’s characters is antisemitic and bi-erasure? I only skimmed through it because it was very accusatory and the comments were also very negative.

I can understand being upset about losing some characters and the criticism about Nora’s bi-identity. I can’t really speak about the antisemitism as I’m not fully aware of that aspect from the book. But I was thinking - if they did make Nora bi and she still ended up being with Percy/Pez, would those critics be happy? Or would they still be mad because June wasn’t there for the polyamorous relationship that was hinted in the books?

They’re mad about Richards, Rafael Luna, Liam, divorce-free Claremont-Diaz household, no Queen Mary, no Princess Catherine, no this, no that. And they said it’s not a true rom-com because it doesn’t flesh out the romance between Alex and Henry? I just don’t understand what it takes for them to be satisfied. Casey said themself that if everything was done 100% from the books, fans still wouldn’t be happy with it. I mostly ignore the loud ones who hate the movie with all their being but when it comes up it’s so jarring. I don’t want the hype of this movie to lose out to the noise of the haters and bashers. This movie, and Alex and Henry’s love story has become so important to many people and we want more!

Funny you should bring that up to me of all people, seeing as I happen to be Jewish!

I think I may have seen posts like that in the past and immediately blocked the poster because I knew that if I wrote a response to them it would spiral out of control, and there were too many people in the replies to try and explain this to.

Post Writing Note: Buckle up for this one cause I definitely went on a tangent about Jewish culture, but I felt like it would help people understand, or at least be interesting.

The short version of this is that they are self centered idiots who have their heads up their ass.

Casey is 100% correct that even if they were completely true to the book, they wouldn’t be satisfied. They will always find something to complain about.

They also simply don’t want to like it, or understand it. All of those major changes were made for a reason, and make complete sense/were the right call for what Matthew was trying to accomplish with the film. But they don’t want to hear or accept that.

As for Nora and June, once again, they are being idiots.

Matthew has explained several times that the decision to cut June was a logical director’s decision.

With the limited time the film has, side characters simply can’t have as much detail or development as they have in the book. In the case of June and Nora, he explained that he essentially would’ve been giving half of a character to the two actresses. They would’ve been fighting for screen time, and would’ve felt unsatisfied with the roles. Therefore, he essentially combined the two into one full character to give to a single actress. It makes complete sense, and was the right choice.

Did that remove the polycule dynamic? Yes, but that was a side effect of the decision, not part of the reason. Matthew does not seem like the kind of person to remove something like that for no reason, or purely because it might "make the straights uncomfortable". It was just the way things happened.

Now, let me address Nora.

The thing that drives me a bit crazy about this is their determination to call her intentional erasure.

Just because those traits weren’t brought up in the film does not make them untrue. There is no reason to assume that she isn’t bisexual or Jewish just because they didn’t bring it up. They did not say anything that counters those details, therefore I don’t see them as being changed.

They are also exaggerating a lot.

Now, I’m saying all this as a Jewish person who would love to see more representation of Judaism casually included in characters.

Nora’s Jewish identity is completely irrelevant to the plot and is only mentioned in the book. When Alex wants to call someone on Christmas after his parents fight, he briefly says that she’s busy celebrating Chanukah. That is the only moment in the entire book that Nora being Jewish is brought up, as far as I can remember from the last time I went through to look for it, when I first saw a post about this. I checked again while writing this. Other book readers can correct me if I’m wrong about that, but I know for a fact that it is not something that’s regularly mentioned or relevant to the plot.

Again, I say this as a Jewish person with love, it was not important. I’ve said it before, and I’ll keep saying it until I fucking die: the book had no time limit.

The novel is not a massive one, but it is absolutely stuffed cover-to-cover with content. It’s a book told through Alex’s point of view, giving direct access into his thoughts and feelings through text.

When Alex offhandedly mentions in his head facts like that, the translation to the screen would be constructing a situation where bringing that up out loud is relevant. The other option is to put clues in the environment to indicate it.

The thing about those options though is that Nora does not have any scenes during the holiday portion of the movie. In fact, there is not even a mention of Christmas at all; the only reason we know is because of the decorations around the White House, but no one mentions it. There is only one scene that even takes place around Christmas in the film: Alex’s conversation with Zahra. From there, it’s straight to New Year’s.

Some may be thinking, “But those are so close together, it would still be relevant!” and I hate to tell you that you’re wrong, but there’s an 85% chance you’re wrong.

Chanukah shifts dates from year to year because it’s determined by the Jewish calendar, and that doesn’t match the normal calendar. As someone grew up celebrating it, and still does celebrate it, I can tell you from personal knowledge that most of the time, it happens before Christmas. Yes, sometimes it overlaps with it, or happens afterwards, but I can safely tell you that most of the time, it happens before; for example, this year Chanukah starts Dec. 8th and ends at sunset Dec. 15th. It starts and ends a whole week before Christmas.

Now, I have to also say, and I say this with as much love and respect as I can for all the normal Christians/Catholics out there, we don’t really… shove our holiday in everyone’s faces?

I know that sounds rude, and it might be, but I mean that everyone knows when Christmas is. Everything closes down for Christmas. Whether you celebrate it or not, you’re most likely going to be off-work or off-school for it. No one looks around and goes, “what day is Christmas again?” And most people know the basic gist of why it’s celebrated.

I’m pretty sure that at minimum 65% of the people who read this had no idea when Chanukah was, and have zero clue why it’s celebrated.

That’s not really their fault, it’s just a simple truth about Western society (especially American) that people don’t get educated on Judaism, even indirectly the way they do for Christmas. The same can be said for all of the religious minorities. I’m by no means innocent of being uninformed on the basics of other minority religions. I’m just bringing it up because it’s somewhat relevant.

When it’s Christmas, you know it’s Christmas. Everyone is talking about it and there’s decorations everywhere. And while there’s sometimes a few decorations for Chanukah and maybe Kwanzaa, it’s not common; especially given the unfortunate reality that said decorations are a beacon for hate crimes.

Circling back to Nora, the easiest way to provide indications that she is Jewish is through decorations in her office/apparel choices. I just explained why she would be unlikely to have decorations in her office for Chanukah, but what about non-holiday specific decor?

Well, in my experience as a reformed Jewish person, there's not a lot of decor that's not very obvious or specifically religious in its representation. I say "specifically religious" because Judaism is a culture as well as a religion. I'm a Jewish person, but I don't regularly attend Temple or practice daily prayer. My experience with Judaism stems more from how we celebrate the major holidays, the kinds of food we eat, clothing we wear, and stuff like that, not passages of the Torah.

We also just don't really have as much physical decoration options as Christians/Catholics, at least for Jews who are not devoutly religious.

Judaism is practices aniconism.

Don't be alarmed, most people don't know what that word means; I only know because I learned about it briefly in an art history course a few years ago. Aniconism is the absence of artistic representations of certain figures in religions. Judaism is generally "anti-iconic", meaning it's strongly discouraged to create imagery, specifically human imagery, of God or other saint-like figures from the Torah. It's not completely unheard of, but think about how frequently you see imagery of Jesus in Christianity/Catholicism, or all the famous imagery of God, and depictions of scenes of the Bible and the saints, etc. etc. etc. Jews just don't do that, at least not nearly to the extent or as commonly as Christians/Catholics.

Jews instead have focused artistry into the form of ceremonial objects, i.e. the menorah, Kiddush goblets, etc.

In fact, my Jewish heritage comes from my father's side, so my grandfather on that side has always been a practicing Jew, and my grandmother converted back when they married. They're not super religious, but more so than my parents and how I was raised.

Thinking back to their home, I'm realizing that all of their Jewish "decor" was fine dishware sort of like this they kept in a China cabinet, like this:

Nora's not going to keep fine China in her office.

The only piece of "decor" that I have in my parents' home is not even really decor. This is a super common thing to find in Jewish households. It's call a mezuzah:

It's a little container that keeps a scroll with two prayers from the Torah written in Hebrew by a calligraphist. They are a symbol of connection and protection amongst the Jewish community. They are an ancient tradition. Nora would definitely have one.

However, these go on the doorframes of the entrance to a home. They're not hung up anywhere to look nice. She wouldn't have one on her office doorway, which is glass anyway.

So I've eliminated physical decorations, so how about jewelry?

This is where I'm sure a bunch of those people will shake their fists at me. The easiest and simplest way to imply a Jewish character (especially a female one) is the same as a Christian/Catholic character: a necklace.

Obviously, it is common practice for crosses to be worn on necklaces. Wearing the Star of David on a necklace is also common, but not nearly as common as the cross. I've noticed over the course of my life an increase in seeing them, but they're still uncommon.

And incredibly recently, I actively chose to stop wearing mine because we are at a point of actual danger in the US right now, specifically Florida, where I happen to be so lucky to live.

Regardless, it's debatable on how likely it would be for Nora to be wearing one. I feel like it's pretty split on how much of the Jewish population does and doesn't. So let's take a look at her style then:

The only outfit I couldn't find a clear still image of was the one in the jeep, but there are GIFs of that:

Note: I swear, if this fandom doesn't start posting more content of the side characters, I'm going to throw something; y'all are making it very hard to write my essays!! 😂

Out of her seven outfits, she is only wearing a neck accessory in ONE. More notably, she's not wearing a necklace in either of her formal outfits: the wedding and the party dresses. If she were going to wear a necklace, a fancier outfit usually makes it more likely. She seems to like wearing earrings more. Earrings with the Star of David exist, but I've personally never seen someone wearing them.

So based on everything I've been talking about, and Nora's personality, and her characterization in the book, and everything else, it's probably unlikely that she would wear a religious necklace, if not because she's not heavily religious, then because she just doesn't wear necklaces.

Could you ignore all that and complain that they could've given her a necklace or something anyway? Yeah, you could, but you are just being annoying and overreacting. She's still a Jewish character. People who haven't read the book may not know that, but tons of people who have read the book didn't even remember that. It's not an intentional decision made to erase her Jewish heritage. It is purely a side effect of having very limited time to cover way too much content.

The same can be said for her being bisexual. There's no reason to assume she's not. Hell, we've been joking about the face she makes when she meets Bea since we saw it:

This look alone is enough to make non-book readers go, "oh ship! ship! ship!". She's not straight just because they don't address her sexuality. Again, it was not an intentional decision made to erase her bisexuality.

Look, I'm not saying you have to like it, but for the love of god, stop acting like Matthew is the devil incarnate who made every change and cut out of spite, and to hurt you specifically.

As for the comment about not fleshing out Alex and Henry's relationship? I... I have no fucking words. That's a lie, I have so many fucking words, but I've been writing this for too long, so I'll speed run this:

First of all, if you don't think the romance between Alex and Henry is "fleshed out" in the film, I cannot say anything else than you are a fucking idiot. I don't like rom-coms, but this one is so fucking genuine, emotional, and sweet that even my cold dark soul feels warmth while watching it.

Second of all, how the fuck are you going to make the claim that they didn't flesh out Alex and Henry's romance, while simultaneously bitching about 3+ hours of book content that didn't make it? Do you not have any logical reasoning skills or common sense, at all??

I WILL SAY IT AGAIN: THE BOOK HAD NO TIME LIMIT. THE MOVIE DID.

Alright, that's enough of all that; I have an essay that I wrote the day after the movie originally dropped that went more in detail about that last one, so I'm not going to get super into that here. That's the short version of that, and if you want to hear the long version, go read this.

alex - the walking dead. has seen every single episode even though it’s been running for over a decade. says he could probably survive a zombie apocalypse. is the biggest glenn defender ever.

tod - community. 100%. when the movie got announced he went apeshit on twitter. he loves troy, has seen every episode at least twice, and actually liked the fourth season for some reason.

carter - breaking bad. actually tried making meth cause he thought walter had the “right idea” with the money. is the kind of guy to retweet sigma male edits of the characters

terry - locke and key. watched it cause she thought the main villain was hot, and when he was a girl too she went crazy on twitter. live tweeted the second season, and will defend kinsey locke to no extent.

kimberly - first kill. clear or shania told her to watch it saying it was like a better version of twilight. (she loves twilight). she was on the front lines trying to keep the show from getting canceled. she has probably made an edit of caliette. she’s crazy like that.

rory - he also likes breaking bad, but he’s more into better call saul. saul goodman is HIM. literally so relatable and babygirl. he saw better call saul first, so when he showed up in s2 of brba he went APESHIT

eugene - abbott elementary because there is “finally” a REAL show about what it’s like to be a teacher. he also never gets into sitcoms so it was a shock for him that he liked it so much

nora - bones. she LOVES crime dramas on daytime television, and bones is no exception. she finds herself trying to figure out the twist every single episode. she also gets way too into the characters. (tim was explaining to her that bones was autistic coded and she went :o)

tim - kid LOOKS like henry danger, but i’m gonna say malcom in the middle. secretly wished for a big family growing up. alex told him that the father makes meth and since tim didn’t know about brba he was actively seeking out that plot line.

evan - literally anything with wrestling.

kat - the office. not in like, a “basic” way or anything but because she is a businesswoman and needs to feel included. she likes pam a lot. wanted dwight to die once. she got through about eight seasons before calling it quits.

wendy - i feel like she’s a house md fan??? idk why or how but it just makes sense to me i suppose. probably an rsl fan or something

kevin - okay unpopular opinion but i feel like he’s a huge fan of the will forte era on snl. he’s a will forte fan in general so he’s probably seen clone high, last man on earth and macgruber

ian - def a santa clarita diet fan. trust me when i say this man was having meltdowns on twitter when it got canceled. you have never seen him more passionate in his life!

erin - okay this is very unpopular and very out of character but she has a guilty pleasure show and that is dawsons creek. joey is her fave and she is Completely Normal about pacey + joey. her regular show is yellowjackets, however. god bless cannibalistic high schoolers
