Okay so I am about to be so incredibly normal. I made a little species in high school and have one (1) character of that species named Chester whom I love very much, I decided to create a little, research paper? about them because I have figured out a lot of things except for the Common Name for the species :)

Going to put it all below the cut but AHHH I am NOT NORMAL ABOUT MY THINGS !!! also VOTE AT THE BOTTOM TO HELP ME FIGURE OUT A COMMON NAME!! please :)

Felis aspid

(Feline family, aspid with ancient Greek roots meaning venomous)

The example of the skeletal structure is my own boy, Chester. The skeleton is very feline-like closest to a domestic cat, the only difference being that extra pair of legs with the semi-fused shoulder blades.

Those upper legs, or "Pedipalps," have a lower range of movement than the front legs, making them useless for movement but very good for carrying things. Kits are carried by the scruff, but other items like some types of prey and supplies for building nests in the wild are carried using these legs. Domesticated ones may use them to carry around their toys if preferred.

These Pedipalps are also very powerful and useful for digging out dens in the wild. They will find a suitable area and dig a fully underground home for their pack, always living in groups of 3 or 4.

These creatures have Antennae closest compared to a moth. The antennae are used for scenting the area as their sense of smell in the nose is not that strong, this combined with the "Jacobson's Organ" still gives them a pretty good idea of the smells in the area, though not in the same way a Feline or Canine may detect those smells.

The tip of the tail is made of the same kind of fur/feathering as the antennae, while thought that it coupe also be used for "scenting" it is mostly used as a sensory organ to keep better track of surroundings as they don't have a good sense of hearing. The different shapes also seem to be used for easier communication and signaling between their pack, family, or even strangers encountered nearby.

The single eye in the center is very interesting. It is not the only eye they have. There are six more eyes placed in groups of three on either side of their large eye.

The center eye helps them see in much more detail, maybe being able to see or capture movement that would be lost to other species. While those other eyes help hone in on what they're hunting, making the creature more aware of their surroundings, usually these eyes are closed when the animal is relaxed as they have no need for it unless in a higher stress situation. This same behavior can be observed in those domesticated during play.

The eye is also interesting because it is a form of sexual dimorphism (while not always, is the case for 90% of the population). The males tend to form a much more interesting shape of pupil as they grow older, like a star or heart shape, that don't seem to naturally occur. While the females have more "boring" shapes that you may be able to find in other species of animal, like simple circles or squares. This has no effect on their sight.

Another fun fact about the eye is that Kits will have blue eyes for a few weeks after being born just like kittens do, they eventually grow into their adult color which, if you know what you are doing can be found out before that point. The color of the eye is completely dependent on the color of their blood and organs, like birds of paradise, this is their dash of color to attract mates.

Their hunting style is very comparable to a regular feline. They will stalk their prey before jumping out and killing it. The key difference is that unlike most felines, they do not have retractable claws, only having small points that barely do damage to another, relying entirely on their fangs and venom.

Yes! These guys are venomous! Not any large amount like their name might imply, but enough to paralyze, at most, an animal the size of small rabbit completely. While taking on bigger prey is an issue for one, when hunting in a pack, they can easily take down something much bigger with the combined use of paralyzing venom.

The usual prey they hunt individually. However, are small animals like mice, birds, shrews, and in some places, large insects like tarantulas. Because their mouths are not built for chewing, they will use their fangs to suck the blood out of their prey, like a spider eats bugs or a vampire bat.

Most wild examples live in colder climates, resulting in a much thicker fur and in a lighter color for camouflage, but there are examples of them living in warmer climates, with both a thinner fur type and completely different, and usually darker, coloring. Domesticated animals can come at almost any shape and form now.

The wild one you will notice has camouflaging most similar to wildcats that live in snowy areas, the light coloring allowing her to blend in with the snow.

The Domesticated ones however, you can more closely compare to a domestic tabby cat, with colors ranging from one solid color to markings just like a house cat.

Another thing of note is that you can see more clearly here how the Male and Female Dimorphism with the pupils looks like with the female having a square pupil and the male having a "heart" shaped pupil, while the kit still hasn't developed her eye color or shape, while she is young it will stay round and black, until the color comes in once she's older.

Lando sat on the edge of the hotel bed, waiting for you. Your trainer had sent Lando a message saying you were on your way up to the hotel room. Lando was mentally freaking out he wanted everything to be perfect, he could hear your voice from outside the door and so he stood up holding the flowers he got on his way to the hotel and stood there waiting for you to enter the room

You let out a slow breath, shoulders heavy with exhaustion, your mind already shutting down from the day. The door clicked open, and you pushed it gently, stepping inside. That's when you froze, your mouth wide open from shock, Lando is here like right in front of me, you thought, still not being able to let any words out

I'll try to list a few more, off my own vague memory, that aren't in AJ's collection and that maybe are hidden gems? maybe not. (okay, this got long so I'll cut it.) If you're looking for something more specific, lmk and I can dig for that particular Type Of Fic. uh. not that I've read every fic.

Unfold Me by mornmeril - this is a great s5 canon divergence where, when Justin walks away, brian goes "wait. jesus fuck no." it's a very in character brian pov imo, which always impresses me cause I couldn't write it. It's so hard to read Brian so unhappy, but it has a happy ending.

Anything by Techgirl, but especially Creating a Family: a season 1 AU that from the get-go changes things (Lindsay passes away in childbirth so Mel and Brian have to step up). Techgirl is very good at showing, not telling? If that makes sense. They've done a bunch of just-off-canon AUs that are super satisfying.

The Things I Cannot Change by suzvoy - there's a reason this is on the first page of any qaf 'sort by kudos'. it's a canon divergent s1 fic which is basically "what if Justin confronted Brian about his unadressed alcoholism?" And, jeez, in true Taylor fashion, he doesn't shy away from what needs to be done. (That happens very quickly, then the inevitable brian rage happens, then, things get better.) Justin is so perfectly Justin - determined, confident, bitchy. Brian is so perfectly Brian - closed off, afraid, blustery arroagnce. And yet they're good together. Epically long and covers most of the season, including prom and beyond it.

Playing it cool by FrenchMarshmallow - this is another s1 AU where Justin is still Justin, but due to circumstances has gone through a bit more and so has already done a bit of growing up before meeting Brian. Sweet, and very kind to the growth they've both done (and have yet to do).

The True Comeback Kid by Anny (CupcakeGirlA) - this one is pain, so delicious but so good. Happy (or happy to hopeful) ending though. Post s5, Justin cuts off contact with no explanation, and then sees Brian at Christmas and has to explain why. Brian is so good and so loving but so him. The tags tell you what's going on.

Fatherhood by PrettyTheWorld, TrueIllusion - a series about Brian and Justin, living in New York, parenting teenage Gus. their relationship is solid, it's about them being friends and support to Gus, as well as settling into being a blended family successfully. It's quite domestic but not in a way that ever felt to saccharine for them? And Brian is a dad without being.. he doesn't pretend he's a full time parent, he's just. There for gus. I found the dynamic is really great.

Life Goes On by Frayach - So I've read this one once, and never again, because I probably wept for about four days over it, ymmv. It isn't actually that sad, per se; it's probably best described as a hopeful ending? But it describes being in your thirties and letting go of the places and people and jobs and experiences you want to keep in a way that myself, at the time, really could not handle. So I think... it depends on whether you've had a partner leave for life reasons, and then moved yourself, et cetera, as to how badly this hurts. But it's so good. Frayach has a lot of really great fic, all of which I recommend, this one is possibly the one that hurt the most of all qaf fic I've ever read.

Ding-Dong, the Witch is Dead by LadyJane_BBJFE - this one is also hard to read but less sad and more, well. Brian's mom dies. Brian doesn't cope well. But him and Justin are solid, in it. Brian is very, very Himself, not the sweeter, softer version.

Figs and Leaves by rhiannonhero - a sweet short oneshot about Jennifer, Brian and Justin bonding. over drugs. <3

Frozen Sunshine by Thyme [archived by bjfic_archivist] - Thyme, as archived by the bjfic archive, wrote so many canon AUs, that I suggest if you're looking for something different to dig in (search "thyme" in the bjfic archive on ao3). I like this one because it's another s1 AU where Justin is just a bit different before he meets Brian. I've saved up like, a dozen of their fics though, so.

Power Exchange by Minxie - this series is a super interesting take on Brian and Justin's relationship; it basically pins Brian as a Dom, so all of his unwillingness to commit to a typical relationship (and all of Justin's insecurities) are intriguingly no longer relevant as they discuss what being in a D/s relationship involves. Very in character to them. Not super heavy on the explicit D/s iirc, but the negotiations are spot-on. it made me want to write a s1 au where Brian putting a collar on Justin makes their insecurities so much better.

Incomplete by Anwamane_13 - this hit all of my "brian being self sacrificing and a dumbass for other people's good" buttons, my need to watch people wallow in self-loathing and then have the people they love pick them up and forgive them (in a believable way), and just all of that. hurt/comfort, I guess? brian style. Brian disappears on justin and the gang, and Justin goes a bit crazy about it.

Ted's Got Talent by eureka1 - I laughed out loud in this one. post-canon. I love Ted and Blake together, so there's that, plus, Ted playing matchmaker.

Here's a list of random Beta-focused Horizon headcanons/scenarios I've accumulated over the months bc guess who's my favourite blorbo :3

TW attempted suicide

-Even after the Zeniths are defeated, Beta still experiences panic attacks and traumatic flashbacks when she gets startled or something reminds her of them, when it gets too much to handle she'll curl up, knees to her chest, hyperventilating and basically unresponsive to anyone around her. She also often gets irrational worries that the gang will "make her go back" when she makes a mistake or does something wrong, she knows that this isn't realistic but her mind can't help but make her worry sometimes, poor girl.

-if things get really bad for her, the gang is there to help. Zo likes to sit with her and sing her soothing songs, Varl is always fussing over her and tries to get her anything she might need, a blanket, some food, or maybe just a hug. Kotallo... he wants to help but doesn't know how so he just awkwardly stares and mumbles something about how a warrior must persevere through hardships. Erend is helpless in a similar fashion and sometimes just offers her a drink (much to the dismay of everyone else)

-Beta definitely attempted to take her life at least a couple of times while on the Zenith ship, but the Zeniths would just psychologically punish her in increasingly brutal ways until she stopped trying altogether.

-the Zeniths didn't bother with giving Beta actual meals to eat, instead a small, tasteless pill filled with all the nutrients the human body needs would be dropped off into her room once a day to keep her alive. When she gets to the base, Zo offers her a meal and Beta tells her she's never really eaten anything before and it absolutely blows Zo's mind. She can't believe they'd completely rob her of experiencing one of her senses and such a vital part of being human, and immediately tries getting her used to different tastes and textures. Even though Beta is pretty freaked out by it at first and has trouble handling anything strong or spicy, over time she grows accustomed to it and learns to love Zo's homemade meals and even picks up some basic cooking skills from watching her.

-The gang has taken to teaching Beta all she needs to know about surviving and fighting for herself in the wilds, just in case. Since Aloy is often busy helping people in the West or tracking down clues, Kotallo, Erend, and Varl take turns training with her, meanwhile Zo teaches her all about foraging and herbology.  Especially Kotallo is happy to have a student he can pass all his knowledge from his past battles onto and makes for a very patient and dedicated mentor. He even calls her "young warrior" sometimes during training.

-She also definitely gets her first armor from one of them, I like to imagine her in the yellow-white Oseram stripes (for art see my latest post hehe)

-While training with her, Kotallo and Erend both develop a certain protectiveness over Beta, much like Varl has. Beta is still deathly afraid of machines of any kind, but she's a quick learner and is even able to use her knowledge of chemistry, physics, and technology to her advantage sometimes. The day she strikes her first charger down all by herself is a big cause for celebration in the base, everyone congratulates her on her first hunt and Beta is filled with a sense of pride and belonging like never before.

same dark brown curls, similar sharp jawline that resembles their father's once charming appearance, had the dark arts not corrupted him from the inside out. in many ways, if one looked at mattheo and tom riddle without the awareness of the diverging personalities, it's easy to assume that they're brothers.

personality, values and behavior, on the other hand... the brothers couldn't be more different.

where tom stands out in the art of spellcasting and a silver tongue, coaxing others to bend to his will subconsciously, mattheo is talented with his fists; the raw honesty that can leave his lips in a rather blunt, harsh way. tom represents a bigger danger, because most of his actions are calculated like every piece of a clockwork; mattheo, however, tilts to the opposite direction, acting in impulsiveness whenever his anger gets too much.

that's why the fights and arguments between the riddle brothers are meant to be private. if not private, then tom's confidants and mattheo's friends know the moment that's meant to take a step back, and let the riddle bloodline solve it amongst themselves.

verbal fights are complicated for mattheo, to say the least. it's infuriating, perhaps overwhelming due to the frustration he feels that tom is so damn good with his words, cornering mattheo in less than two minutes. hating to feel cornered, mattheo's struggle to verbalize his feelings gets worse whenever he's under pressure — stared at from tom's piercing gaze. frighteningly similar to their father. birds of a feather. father and son.

verbal fights end rather quickly, whenever mattheo doesn't push tom around — even though he's the youngest, mattheo has the physical ability that tom, secretly, envies — and tom doesn't take his wand out of threat—a promise.

nevertheless, verbal fights also mean that the brothers won't speak to each other for a handful of days. not until one of them needs the other, for whatever reason, that unites them as an unwilling team; eventually forgetting the reason why the fight first separated them, although the slight resentment lingers in their hearts. verbal fights are specially frustrating for mattheo, who trashes around in crash out, until blaise speaks some sense or lorenzo and theodore are the ones to push mattheo to a corner to calm himself down. draco and pansy, well, the two of them know that the group has better helpers when it comes to mattheo's explosive feelings.

for tom, verbal fights are peaceful. silver tongue, quick wit, a lot of things to say; where mattheo struggles and rages, tom finds relief on expelling some things that he was waiting to confront mattheo with.

LMK and the Problem of Li Jing

If my browsing in the Nezha tag is any indication, I'm not the only one who has...opinions about the interesting writing choice in S5.

Namely, it's awkward, completely out of left field, and forced.

I am also gonna try and calmly dissect my feelings on the matter, so that it doesn't become a "me sassing Li Jing for ten pages straight" post.

See, my biggest problem isn't "Li Jing is a good/sympathetic dad instead of his more mythos-accurate portrayal".

There are adaptations that make him a good father (Nezha 2019), or at the very least, a flawed but still sympathetic figure (Legends of Nezha cartoon).

And even though FSYY and JTTW's Nezha both have their Attempted Patricide Arc as part of their backstory, when JTTW's Nezha showed up in the novel proper, he was overall more obedient towards Li Jing, so it's not completely without basis (tho crucially, JTTW's Li Jing is also terrified of him picking up the "Patricide" hobby again).

The key, however, is Show Not Tell.

See, the adaptations above are all Nezha-centered works that have plenty of screentime to show where they diverge from the original mythos, and build their takes on the father-son relationship off that new foundation.

LMK, however, doesn't have that. We don't know if either version of the Patricide Arc is true for the show, or even given Nezha's particular backstory for this setting.

We don't know if we should just assume that Nezha's backstory in either JTTW or FSYY went down the same way, or given clues as to where it differs.

All we have are the on-screen interactions, and these consist mostly of Li Jing being his typical Lawful Stupid self.

Sure, there are weak attempts at making him more sympathetic: we are told, through Nezha, that he had been "working sooooo hard" to keep everything running after taking over as basically regent of the Celestial Realm, but again, we aren't shown that properly.

All I see is this guy who...I dunno, went out to get Starbucks or something when JE was kill, then showed up after everything was over to play the loyal minister and prosecute SWK and the gang for bullshit reasons.

(Which is coincidentally very accurate to his overall role in FSYY. Except FSYY's Li Jing was anything but the most sympathetic father figure.)

And because we are given no context for their relationship, their confrontation and reconcillation also feel rushed, falling completely flat when it comes to emotional impact.

Like, if we are to assume their backstory are mythos-accurate, then the whole thing makes no sense——neither "returning your flesh and blood" or attempted patricide can be shrugged off that easily.

If we are to assume it differ from the mythos...HOW and WHERE? Does the birth from a flesh ball happen? Is Nezha destined to be the Vanguard of the Zhou Army, or just a supernaturally powerful kid who can wreck the dragon king's crystal palace three days after his birth?

If he did kill Ao Bing and not just some random dragon, was it an accident, completely justified, or FSYY-accurate? Is his suicide forced or a willing sacrifice, done to save his parents? Did Li Jing destroy his temple? If the Attempted Patricide Arc happened, how was it resolved?

Change one of these, and it will have completely different implications on the Li Jing-Nezha relationship, yet we don't get a single answer to any of these questions.

As a result, the show's version of their relationship and conflict also feels very shallow and generic, your standard "The obedient son must finally stand up and find the courage to voice his opinion to his harsh but loving father——no real anger involved, of course!"

Which is a narrative divergent enough from the mythos as to require proper explanation, instead of being left up to the audiences' imagination, and also, in my opinion, far less interesting than it could have been.

For example: instead of learning to speak his mind (like he'd ever be afraid of doing that), the high point of their conflict is Nezha realizing that he has legitimate reasons to express his anger towards Li Jing for his short-sighted, unsound and overall Lawful Stupid decisions in the here and now, without it being a continuation of their old grievances or exploding into Patricide Arc 2: Electric Boogaloo.

And for someone whose limited characterization has been nothing but an unbroken chain of putting laws and loyalty above reason and common sense, it should take something a lot harsher and undeniable than "They aren't bad guys, dad!" to convince Li Jing.

Lastly, instead of the very cliched "I'm sorry, there's so much left unsaid, I'm proud of you" line, I'd prefer something that was less blatant and, though still awkward, more in line with the rewritten conflict above: sth like "You are right to be angry at me, and I won't mind if you never stop being so."

(i also have them for riptide, pd, suckening, bitb, and apothy-- if you guys want those too lmk, i dont want to crowd this post though) Judgement Spiritfarer thoughts under the cut :)

buck barker - big dawg. !!! ruuuudyyyyy . --- my thoughts for where youd find buck barker would be at a concert for.obvious reasons. in the show his deal of leaving his wife and unborn child works well with spiritfarer's themes; him dying and being unable to get back to them no matter how badly he wants to. Youd have to find him a guitar or some instrument before he agrees to come with you? When he does come with you he points you in the general direction of Mel. spiritflower: edelweiss! this one lives quite long, is resilient and courageous. it also is referred to as "noble white" which as a bit is forsure something he'd call himself .or bizly .so. originally i wanted something with ties to music and supposedly theres a song named after this flower but it kind of fell through the cracks. the flower is very simple looking too and i think that fits buck barker a lot. mel - fox!!! sneaky, cunning .a little cutes. considered to be very family oriented!! foxes form small family groups typically for the purpose of raising kids. they are Solitary hunters though, which reminds me very much so of mel. for mel you'd have to have buck on the ship first, since he puts you in the direction of her. you know that one island in spiritfarer with a bunch of the old neon signs and technological shit that is super out of place? yeah. either that or like a run down town on the brink of collapse? she doesn't require you to have/do anything before she joins u. she's happy to leave this shit behind at the first opportunity (to. parallel how easily she agreed to killing the king for the promise of a new life. you know how it is) spiritflower: asphodelus! death and regret, you know the deal. in greek mythology these are said to be found in a part of the afterlife where souls arent particularly happy nor unhappy just Are. these flowers are also white and a little simple which makes me happy considering they look vaguely similar to Buck's flower, and the two have a sort of father daughter shtick goin on. jaguar joe - salamander that comes free with his character --- this guy strikes me as the kind of guy to just Show Up one day. like a stowaway on the spiritfarer ship? and he kind of just pulls up and demand you build him a home. lol spiritflower: cat's ear (hypochaeris radicata). resilience and tenacity you know it. fun fact is these are typically called false dandelions which ties well into how Jaguar Joe just kind of says shit. and hardly any of it sticks or makes any logical sense but Sometimes. there is something there. paeon - crow since that also comes free with xaer character . if Jackie wasn't a pre-existing character in Spiritfarer then paeon wouldve been found on that island as a caretaker? it handles more medical care than mental care i suppose so maybe theres an actual hospital then xaer can be found there. spiritflower: black bat flower . black for obvious reasons but also Have You Seen It. that flower has such paeon vibes. medicinal use and "anticancer potential in research studies" came up when i was doing more research abt it.

“why are you making gojo a tragic character” he is tragic wdym!! even with his silly, unserious persona, we have glimpses of his misery (outside his relationship with geto bc that itself is another layer of tragedy in his character lmao) bc he's often exploited and dehumanized!!

he was born with an extremely rare and powerful feature, six eyes, which immediately puts him into the spotlight since his birth. he was just little when a target was put on his head for various reasons (ex. money, fear, power) so he had to act accordingly in order to protect himself [child gojo scenes]. he was also adored by many but solely for his strength and ability to protect, his capability to shoulder a lot of responsibilities because he was gojo. we can assume that it's instilled to him from the very beginning that he needs to fulfil that duty because what other purpose would heis ability serve? he doesn't particularly like his role either [basketball scene] as that's all what he's been doing, it's all what he's been told, and it's all what he'll continue to do even after his death.

but even with his service, he's still treated like shit. to almost everyone, gojo's identity doesn't go beyond his name, his CT, his six eyes, his ability to lift heavyweights, his almost unmatched strength and intelligence,, he is a tool, an object with a purpose. even with his power, he couldn't bring himself to go against those weaker than him—the very people he protects. he's supposedly above everyone yet it seems like he's under their tight grip. tho can see where they're coming from as the gap between him and everyone else is large, but it's still a heavy responsible to carry,, it's exhausting and it sucks the life outta you

he's so lonely despite being surrounded by people, not just in the sense that his peers don't get along with him because they think he's insufferable, but also in the sense that he has no one to share his burdens with (by splitting the responsibility, talking about it, or understanding him), he can't be his authentic self around anyone, he can't be human around anyone. because if the gojo satoru was worried, exhausted, defeated, that means everyone is doomed! he can't show anything but his silly and unworried personality to protect people around him. the persona he's curated acts like a veil which conceals the fights sorcerers go through to defeat enemies.

to the majority, gojo is not completely a human person, no the depth or nuance, he is simply a strong character. he can't deny the request for help, he can't seek help, he certainly can't rest. who knows what goes on inside his head? who knows what his thoughts are like and how he's affected by all the burden he carries? well, the two people who was near his level knew (geto and yuuta)

he's truly miserable.. and because of how the jujutsu world is, everything would crumble if there wasn't someone that is both powerful and exploitable. I think understanding him is as far as we'll get to making him human

Fixing The Seven & Junior Year/Unquangling the Time Quangle:

We can do this guys! We can make it make sense! Let's go!!

Actually, knowing what we know now about the academic workload of junior year, it makes even more sense that Zelda, Ostentatia and Danielle would want to graduate early to avoid all that

And timeline-wise, a couple tweaks and we can make it work - The summer of the Night Yorb happened, and the Seven are coming back to school in those few days after the Night Yorb has been defeated but before the Bad Kids return, because that journey takes time, and it actually makes sense that the Bad Kids start the year a couple days late

So, the Seven’s first day is Aguefort’s last day, he’s there to receive them and break the news and tell them about the GED, but he’s leaving right after on his journey with Ayda

Then, we change T7 a bit so that it’s only during the first semester and all of them graduate early (so they just don’t happen to catch any of the Bad Kid’s mess at the end of the year, and they’re just far from school for the first semester and that’s okay)

Some wackiness to explain why Aguefort is in T7 finale – Tectonya could have contacted him in the Time Quangle to let him know about the Seven’s success, and he goes back to Elmville for a day specifically to receive them and have them officialy graduate, casting time stop so that he isn’t spotted by anyone at the school (which did happen in canon, it was just for no reason, but this would be an actual good reason!). Why would he do this? Because he’s Arthur fucking Aguefort. He’s just silly like that. And I think we can admit the Seven are his favorite students

Also, in ep 1, Penny thinks there isn’t a student council just because Aguefort’s been lying to her about it because he knows she would be amazing and he doesn’t want anyone at school in a position of power more powerful/capable than him - that's just canon

Finally, I want to add an entire missing, subtle subplot to explain Zelda and Gorgug: after they were reunited at the end of spring break, they were fine and good together; and through more Sophomore Year quests (like in Boys Night) and the summer of the Night Yorb, they have learned their lesson and communicated plenty even when apart. However, once Junior Year starts, and Gorgug is super busy with the multiclassing without an MCAT stuff, and Zelda with the maidens and the GED, they just start not having time to prioritize relationships (pun with the JY downtime stats very much intended) and eventually start realizing they’re drifting apart and going in different directions. Zelda didn’t really have her own arc of difficult family or future stuff in T7 like the rest of the group, which hey, I understand the nature of NPCs, and Brennan wasn’t going to narrate a whole other plotline just for and by himself, but it would be very easy to say that Zelda was dealing with a whole other thing in the background - namely, struggling in her relationship and coming to terms with the idea that it would be for the best to break up with her boyfriend, despite them still caring for each other. Ideally, post T7 ending, somewhere at the end of the first semester of JY (in which yeah, slight canon change, Gorgug and Zelda would have been together in until now, but only in the background, like how they were together in T7), they met up at Basrar’s, just like their first date, and had a talk about how Zelda’s graduated now, and how Gorgug’s really busy and how they don’t know how they really fit into each other’s lives anymore. They’ll always love each other, but amicably break up and part ways, each going on to their own adventures.

And I think that's it! All the inconsistencies between seasons I could find. And I do believe it works like this! Lmk if I forgot anything or if there's any reason this doesn't make sense 👍

Characterization Through Language: Sora (Kingdom Hearts)

The poll ended up with Sora winning so here we are! In a way, it makes sense since he's the protagonist and considering that he's my favorite, I have no problems with that~

After Sora, I'm going to go in order of the poll results so Riku should be next.

Below, I'll give some general info about each character in JPN like their voice actor and then go into things like preferred 1st/2nd Person pronouns (or how they go about them in general). After that I'll add some of my own thoughts and interpretations for the character in question + how ENG might have made decisions based off of JPN/localization differences + maybe some fun trivia if I just so happen to have any.

This does include some notes about Vanitas and Data-Sora.

Of course, I might be missing stuff because watching everything from all the games is way too much workload, so if anyone finds any mistakes or has anything to add, feel free to lmk.

Of course, he voices Vanitas as well. The difference is really interesting. Right below are links to videos for their voicelines in battle and you can see the stark difference in tone/direction Irino-san takes them, especially with the lines where they're saying the same thing.

Sora makes use of his upper/normal range, especially in battle, while Vanitas uses his normal/lower range. If you aren't familiar with the JPN dub, that should give you some idea of how Sora (+ Vanitas) sound.

Now onto notable preferences/habits Sora has when he speaks:

I've mentioned this in other posts but I have some newer insights.

Sora's preferred 1st Person pronoun ("I") is: "Ore" - 俺

(Though there is one case of him using "boku" (僕) with Kairi in KH1. "Boku" is a more...humble but still a usually casual masculine "I" pronoun)

This is a really casual, usually masculine pronoun. If you hear a male character use "ore" then they're usually really confident and/or casual, though that's in the most typical sense. If you consume Japanese media, you've definitely heard this one before.

Of course, this is fitting for Sora. His whole thing is being a normal teenage boy, easily excitable and very friendly.

Sora's preferred 2nd Person Pronoun ("you") is: "Kimi" - 君 / キミ BUT, and huge but, there's more layers to this than past me knew fully

I've usually seen him go with "kimi" in most cases but throughout the series, he tends to switch depending on who he's talking to.

With the way Japanese works, "you" pronouns can often be omitted in conversation since context makes things easily understood. Also, you might hear people or characters saying someone's name more often than in English which can be a matter of formality (I've brought this up in an earlier post) or otherwise.

Sora often says the names of his friends, like he usually refers to Donald and Goofy by name from what I've seen, but there's some interesting notes.

If he just so happens to say "you" to Riku then it's "omae"

But he also uses "omae" with people who antagonize him or those on a level "below" like he does with Pluto in KH1

(This is also a thing in Japanese, a formality type thing, where your superior can speak to you casually but not vice versa. Your boss can call you casually but not the other way around. An in-universe example is how MoM uses "omae" Ava and Gula as they're the youngest of the foretellers)

In Riku's case, it's a show of how close they are and the sort of dynamic they have. Sora doesn't seem to use "omae" with others but Riku is his childhood friend. They're best friends and rivals, and the use of "omae" on both of their sides is a show of that wavelength they share.

If it's people like Kairi, Naminé, most others then "kimi" is used. "Kimi" is considered more polite than "omae" but still pretty casual and somewhat associated with masculine pronouns from what I've seen. Sora seems to use this with strangers he hadn't been antagonized by, friends that aren't Riku, etc.

Interestingly, in Coded, Data-Sora uses "omae" with Data-Roxas which is a given since Data-Roxas was pretty much an antagonizing stranger to him from the get-go. However, in Dream Drop, Sora uses "kimi" with Roxas. In a way, I think this shows the variation between Sora and Data-Sora as individuals in terms of their experiences.

(You could also say the same with Roxas, but I'll save that for his own post)

This is a rarer one compared to his use of "kimi" and "omae" but he has used "anta" (あんた), which is a shortened form of "anata" (あなた) (a more formal "you" than the previous ones mentioned), when he firsts meets Ansem in the beginning of KH1.

A characters 1st/2nd pronoun usage is always interesting to me because it says a lot about a character based on what they choose to use and if they choose to switch depending on who they're talking to.

Sora switches his "you" pronouns which does show awareness over some social standards though he doesn't actually change how he speaks overall (he's speaks casually from the get-go). Oftentimes with characters, they might not switch no matter who they're talking to. It gives a lot of insight on how they view things like formalities and/or social norms. I just think this is an interesting aspect to take note of.

Sora is pretty straightforward in JPN, as in, if you're more familiar with ENG and were asked to imagine his voice in JPN, you probably wouldn't be that far off from the truth. Haley Joel Osment and Miyu Irino, especially in earlier games were pretty similar in terms of pitch, tone, and vibes for Sora, though HJO has a much more apparent voice drop. HJO does have a pretty big jump from 2 to 3, though I think he still portrays Sora really well.

Miyu Irino has been mostly consistent with Sora's voice, to the point many think his voice hasn't really changed at all (between 2 and 3 but I've even seen people go as far as 1. In reality, I believe there's definitely a notable difference from 1 for sure).

Sora doesn't have extremely quirky/out there speaking habits. As said before, he's pretty much a normal casual teen boy. Irino-san uses a very energetic vibe with him. He also adds a whine to his voice sometimes which is really cute LOL

I do think there's a big difference between his usual/energetic pitches and when he's being serious. The dichotomy of Sora's childish whimsy versus his maturity (both natural and forced haha...ha...)

Even so, I think there's still a lot of cool finds that can't be found in ENG, even if it's small things like a difference in tone for a sentence.

I've brought this up in a post a long time ago, but I think some of the way lines end up sounding in ENG, the awkward sounding/phrased ones, are due fundamental difference between English and Japanese. This is notable with Sora, hence why I'll bring it it up with him, but Japanese has a lot of different sounds + the way grammar structure forms sentences. Hence why scenes like the conversation between Sora and Ven with Vanitas end up the way they are in ENG (look at this post I have for translating this scene for context).

I get on with everyone at work except for Pinfield, and I genuinely dont know why.

I've tried getting him to feature in videos, or explain the science of stuff to me so I can actually seem like I know what I'm talking about- but he just brushes me off.

Gary tries to reassure me about this on a daily basis. "Its nothing to do with you Y/N" he smiled one day, putting a hand on my shoulder and guiding me away from the busy scientist. "He doesnt really talk to anyone, he gets really passionate about his work"

"I get that, but there's no need for him to be a dick to me, he's got me thinking all kinds of shit honestly!" I replied, exhasperated "I've never done nowt to him"

Suddenly, Pinfield raised his head from his work, scrunching his eyebrows together. "thats a double negative" he commented, looking at me as if I was stupid. Great, It's the most he's ever spoken to me and its a fucking insult- atleast I think it is.

"you what?" I ask, making my way over to him despite Garys protests. I fold my arms, looking as menacing as i can (which ive been told isn't very menacing at all)

"I said its a double negative, if you've never done nothing then you must've done something" before I can reply, he adds onto the end "which you haven't, by the way. I dont know why you think that. I treat you the same as anyone else"

I can't explain why his answer bothers me so much, but it does. Why does he view me in the same way he views the others? That's hardly fair. I'm always welcoming to him, I make time out of my day to include him in things. I hate to admit it, but I genuinely admire him aswell. His love for all things paranormal, the way he gets so excited and proud when he gets to explain the science of ghost-catching to someone. It's oddly endearing.

I tell him as much (excpet for the stuff about him being endearing, he doenst need his ego inflated any more than it already is)

He looks confused, I've never seen him look like that- its weird. Arrogant? sure. Annoyed? when is he not bffr. Happy? Once or twice. But confused? Weird. This is the guy with all the answers, the smart one.

He thinks for a moment, before seemingly making a desision. He stands up with a small huff of exhasperation, and walks off.

As he goes past me, he grabs my arm, more gently than I thought he was capable of. Okay, i guess im coming too. Fun, roadtrip time.

He takes me out of the lab and down the corridor, into a relatively well lit small room.

"Well this is-" before i can speak properly, he cuts me off. Told you he was a prick.

"I dont understand you Y/N" he blurts out, looking at me, as if I'm some sort of specimin hes studying in the lab.

"Well good." I joke. I dont like the serious tone he's taking. Dont like how aware I am of his gaze. HATE the fact I can feel my cheeks burning. Gross. Pinfield is a dick, we've established this. Why the fuck am I BLUSHING because he's LOOKING at me? Bit embarassing, pull it together Y/LN.

He doenst like this though. He shakes his head, pacing around.

"No Y/N you dont get it. I understand everyone, sort of anyways. I've observed them, I can predict their reactions to things. I know what they're all like- but you're... I just dont understand! You're so happy and nice all the time, but you also get angry at stupid stuff, but never really properly angry? I cant make sense of it, genuinely. You've not done anything wrong, you can't do anything wrong. Thats frustrating too. It's like you're this perfect, beautiful person, and I've been trying to see flaws but I cant-" He rambles, speaking like hes just letting out one stream of constant thoughts. He seems stressed, poor guy.

I interupt him, grabbing his arm. "Hey, c'mon Pinfi- I- Lars. C'mon Lars. I'm not worth the stress mate" I try and reassure him, but that just agitates him more.

"See! That's just it! I've been horrible to you, I admit it. But you've kept trying with me! When I hurt my hand you were the one who bandaged it and put it in a sling"

(i had found him almost blacked out from the pain on the lab floor, even the memory of it sent a shiver down my spine)

"you were the only one that looked for me after we all nearly died fighting Garraka"

("Pinfield? Pinfield!? Oh my god, there you are! Thank fuck you're alright!" Okay maybe this tiny non-crush had been going on longer than i thought... christ)

"I dont like the thought of you hurt..." i muttered, embarrased. this definitely wasnt how i was expecting this conversation to go, fuck my life I was crushing on a nerdy scientist who defintely didn't like me back.

He stopped his pacing and walked over to me until the gap between us was non existant. He slowly, hesitantly, lifted his hand until he cupped my cheek.

"I don't like the thought of you upset because of me" he muttered, his voice low.

My heart completely stopped, my breath caught in my throat, was this happening? how was this happening? i swear this guy was like my mortal enemy not even 5 minutes ago. so many revelations were bieng made today...

I decided to be bold, why not? fuck it, i've got nothing to loose at this point.

I leaned in so our noses just grazed eachother, looking at him, really genuinely looking at him. his soft blue eyes that seemed to peer into my soul. Not pierce through it, like some weird blue eyed fuckers i knew, but looked. gently, tenderly, as if he was looking at everything i ever had been, or would be. like i was something beautiful, something to be treaured.

It made me want to sob at the thought. god, how disgustingly sweet.

"make up for it then" i whispered, the tension so thick i could cut it with a knife.

I'd planned on being the one to make the forst move, but apparently, that was all that Lars needed.

He kissed me. His soft lips pressed against mine, sotfly, tenderly, tentatively.

I could feel the anxiety radiating off of him, so i quickly reciprocated. More eagerly than i owuldve liked- but oh well.

I could feel his hand resting on my waist, his thumb gently stroking my cheek. It all felt so tender, so raw, not at all how i thought it would be.

I felt like a teenager again, and couldnt resist letting out a small giggle, making Lars pull away. He looked confused again, making me laugh once again.

"What?" he aksed, a sort of amused smile on his face.

"Nothing- sorry. Nothing at all. Just thinking of how fuming mums gonna be when i tell her ive got a posho for a boyfriend"

"I am NOT posh!"

"you are a littleee"

"I AM NO- wait- boyfriend?"

"oh shit didnt mean to say that bi-"

he cut me off with another kiss, this one much more confident.

It felt like a million fireworks were going off in my head, oh I could definetly get used to this feeling. This war, sweet, happy feeling. My senses were flooded with everything Lars. His taste, his smell, his touch.

I felt like I was learning to live again.
