In the Philippines, divided politics, divided web

MANILA--Mocha Uson sweeps into her office at the presidential compound, assistant at her booted heels. She’s late, rushing in from another engagement that ran longer than planned. But she appears composed, almost reserved, as she arranges herself on a faux-leather settee and waits for the interview to begin.

In this setting it’s hard to picture Esther Margaux Uson, known countrywide as “Mocha,” sashaying across a stage in vinyl hot pants or dispensing advice on sex and relationships. Yet for the better part of a decade, provocative entertainment was the core of her career--first fronting for the Mocha Girls, an all-female music group known for racy numbers, and later responding to intimate reader questions via a series of written and video blogs.

Then in 2015, she learned about Rodrigo Duterte.

“He was different from traditional politicians. And at the time … there weren’t any well-known personalities who publicly supported him,” Ms. Uson says in a mix of English and Tagalog. “So I said, ‘I have to make a stand.’”

Through the first few months of 2016, she stunned the Philippine political world by converting the Mocha Uson Blog to an online rallying point for supporters of President Duterte. Its transformation was in some ways the singular product of a nation that regularly elects celebrities into government and ranks first in the world in social media use.

Her ascent, however, also reflects an evolving global political landscape, where information is democratized and every opinion has the opportunity to find a platform. Citizens can directly hold institutions like media and government accountable, while the latter can respond to their constituents sans mediator. Given reach and charisma, anybody with a voice--sex symbols, high-school students, TV comedians, real-estate moguls--can scale the heights of political influence and authority.

The price is often decreased civility, and consensus, say experts. Tribal lines are quickly drawn and held, and fact becomes flightier, hard to pin down and easy to manipulate. The social-media savvy--both individual and corporate--possess more power than ever to shape the tone, trajectory, and themes of political discourse.

Few countries today epitomize this new reality as clearly as the Philippines, the social-media capital of the world, with a norm-breaking president whose campaign supporters harnessed this shifting online landscape to win the election. And few individuals embody it as clearly as Uson. As the 2016 campaign season picked up steam, her name became inseparable from the Duterte lobby, drawing animosity and acclaim in near-equal measure from Filipinos at home and abroad. Her Facebook base has since ballooned from 2.5 million to more than 5 million--a figure that remains unrivaled even by the head of state she serves. In May 2017, after a brief stint with the government’s entertainment regulation board, she was named assistant secretary at the Presidential Communications Operations Office.

Uson shrugs when confronted with her apparent success. “The journey has been colorful and exciting. And I have a sense of fulfillment,” she says. But to her, much of the road thus far seems inevitable. Her feelings about Duterte’s candidacy compelled her to speak out on his behalf, she says, and she felt just as obliged to use Facebook to do so. Because what better way to spread an idea than on a platform that boasts up to 67 million users in the Philippines?

“Everything is on social media,” Uson says. “We can’t avoid the fact that it’s the direction information dissemination is going.”

Experts around the world have been making similar pronouncements since at least 2008, when Barack Obama became among the first politicians to leverage social networks to get out the vote. Less than three years later, the Arab Spring--the series of revolutionary protests that, thanks to Twitter, swept across Tunisia, Egypt, and the Middle East--became, briefly, a symbol of social media’s potential to reinvigorate democracy.

Today about 2.6 billion people use social media worldwide, up from fewer than a billion in 2010. From India to Sudan, the US to the U.K., social media--and the very public web of information and misinformation it weaves--has helped elect leaders, birth movements, crush rebellions, and intensify divides.

Mr. Duterte’s election proved to be the watershed moment for social media and politics in the Philippines. Leading up to 2016, frustration with political leadership after decades of what was widely perceived as weak and corrupt government coincided with a rise in affordable mobile data plans. Filipinos yearning for political change had better access than ever to the online political sphere.

“It made it so much cheaper to engage with each other,” says Tony La Viña, former dean of the School of Government at Ateneo de Manila University. “People felt very liberated to be able to participate in debates, to have [their] opinions disseminated.”

For those who understood the social media space, it also meant new opportunities to amass both profit and political capital. Bloggers like Uson--”influencers,” in public relations parlance--rose to prominence, becoming the most powerful voices for those who had felt excluded from public discourse. Indeed, much of the success of social media in Philippine politics has pivoted on the perception that it is the unvarnished and authentic alternative to traditional media: the newspapers, television and radio stations, and online news sites that Duterte supporters say all but ignored the president’s campaign and continue to smear his administration with negative stories.

“It was the erosion of trust in mainstream [news outlets]. People were looking for an alternative voice,” says pro-Duterte blogger Rey Joseph Nieto, also known as “Thinking Pinoy” (a Tagalog slang term for Filipino). “They found me, [blogger] Sass [Rogando Sasot], and Mocha--for better or for worse.”

“Fake news” is a constant preoccupation of bloggers on the other end of the political spectrum, as well. But their goal is to support, not subvert, traditional media.

“Most of my posts are about debunking false propaganda and calling out the shortcomings of government officials,” says Jover Laurio, whose Pinoy Ako Blog (“I am Filipino”) drew attention for its cutting letters addressed to the administration and its allies.

“And to stop the killing,” she adds, referring to the president’s violent antidrug campaign. “Every time I write a letter, I pray that they read it.”

Less conspicuous than the blogger cohort are the PR and marketing firms who manage politicians’ social media campaigns. A report released earlier this year explored the extent to which such firms, and the strategists who run them, have developed a blueprint for manipulating political opinion in the Philippines via social media. Using the techniques of corporate marketing, these “architects of networked disinformation” hire teams of “digital influencers” to push a particular message on Facebook comment sections and Twitter feeds. The campaigns, which can involve seeding revisionist history or hijacking attention through artificial hashtags, are motivated largely by profit, according to the report.

“The thing about social media is, its incentive structures are about visibility,” says Jonathan Corpus Ong, co-author of the report and associate professor of global digital media at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. “What comes up on our news feed is the one that is more popular and is most liked. There are ways in which these algorithms can be gamed and manipulated. That’s made it easy for particular operators to weaponize [it] for politics.”

The effects of all this on the Philippine political space have been far-reaching--and familiar, to audiences following social media’s effects in the West. Online vitriol is at an all-time high. Trust in traditional media outlets is at an equivalent low, with Filipino webizens saying they trust social media more than mainstream publications.

And there’s the sense that, especially on social media, there exist two realities. In one, the Philippines is a place of fear and chaos, where innocents are gunned down in the streets and a foul-mouthed despot encourages ruthless justice against those who defy him. In the other, the country is just beginning to ascend to economic heights and international prestige through the ministrations of a strong, if somewhat vulgar, leader willing to do what needs to be done.

Here we are all the full moon and in the bingo bango bongo of four retrograde planets! Eekers.

It is a time evaluation, of reflection, of looking back at what needs to be healed in the past so we can carry forward with more ease and gentleness in the now and in our futures. That is the gift of retrogrades.

It's not always easy as our old stuff emerges and comes to the for front but heck, let's let it. Allow it. Make room for it at the kitchen table as though it were your long lost aunt. We must honor its' existence and take a look. Feel it. Set it on its' way...out of body, out of our bones, released from our tissue.

For me, I've been lingering in trauma memories. I thought I had done my healing around this but life and emotional breakdowns, says the healing is not done.

When I had my first baby my first husband just didn't deal with the transition into fatherhood well and basically bailed. He did it in a manner that was hurtful, in a way he knew best...to cheat and chose another woman.

My highest conscious Self knows that he wasn't conscious or aware enough to talk and tell me that he was struggling or lost or unsure if he could handle being both a husband and father simultaneously.

And so he left and chose her. He didn't know how to say that he could not be who I needed or was asking of him so he acted it out to express it to me. I get that on a soul level, but it was still emotionally and mentally devastating and one of the most painful experiences of my life. (As well as the best thing that could have happened in the long run).

I associate having a baby with pain and struggle and loss.

I ended up on my own with baby, in a new apartment (he got the house), lost my job (found another), he got our dogs as he was in the house and me in an apartment. And there I was in the threshold of new motherhood trying to keep my head above water, wondering if I could support myself and baby, manage motherhood and a full-time job, etc..etc..

It was devastating, so much change all at one time. It was shocking actually. I felt really abandoned and alone. Navigating custody battles when you were wronged and nobody gave a poop was crazy making.

I struggled most with the fact that I could not be with my baby all the time cause of the choice he made, I had to lose time with my son. I had to share custody. There was little to no consequence for him or his actions...he got to keep the house (he did have to buy me out), he had his regular job, and he got what he wanted...to be a part-time dad all by betraying our vows, lying, and being with another woman.

I on the other hand got my world shattered and was continually told in court that I had to keep the emotional stuff separate from the custody, like I was not supposed to have feelings for what I went through. I was treated like the problem, not him.

CRAZY. MAKING!

Anywho...years have passed. I'm happily remarried with a new baby who's almost 9months old. Well my husband has been working out of town for the last few months and I have been on my own with the kids for weeks at a time.

It has totally triggered all those memories. The emotions, the forgotten dark times, the memories I blocked out...all coming back with a vengeance....to the point I cry and cry and cry. I've done trauma therapy, emotional release work, journalling, creative expression, you name it...I've released so much and yet the memories of being on my own with a baby linger in my gut, in my blood, in my immune system. There is more to be released.

This full moon is asking us to revisit past sore spots and evaluate how they impact the now. What's been coming up? An old relationship? An old patter of self-sabotage or job loss or endings, break-ups, loss in general? Allow it my friends. Pull out the chair and have it sit down with you.

FULL MOON HEALING RITUAL

Find a cozy space, light a candle and some incents. Have a cup of tea or a glass of wine and grab and pen and paper. We are going to write a letter to ourselves in the past that was struggling (And still has some to release). We are going to offer this part of ourselves what she

Allow what comes.....but here's some points to remember to

-Honor and recognized and validate your younger self's feelings and experiences.

-Ask that part of you what she needs.

-Allow her to answer.

-Imagine bringing this part of you to a time in your past where you experienced and received what she is needing. So if you are needing to feel love or trust, remember a time when you did. Who's with you. What are you doing? What season is it?

time of day? What are you doing together? What are the smells in the air.

What colors and temperature is it? Breathe in the sensation of experiencing what she/you needs. Where do you feel it? See it as a ball of energy and let it spread throughout your body, allow the feeling to expand and really experience it sensationally for a few minutes.

Write about it...and bring her back now with the memories.

To my 28 year old self,

First off, I see you. I hear you. I honor you. I know how much pain you endured and you still carry. I see it, I feel it, I honor that it's there. I think you are so strong for making it, for carrying on, for doing what you need to do to survive and care for your son. I'm so proud of you.

I know you are struggling, I see you, I feel you, I hear you with all the emotions that you are arising within me....what do you need

I need to feel not so alone...not so abandonned, not so isolated like I have to everything myself. I feel trapped and caged and scared. It's so heavy and painful to carry it all myself. I can't believe I have to do this myself.

As I reflect on when I have felt the most supported and loved and held is when I was in Lynn Andrews School. My classmates were my sisterhood. And so I bring her to one of our circles and fires where they all gave me healing and love. They drummed and rattled and held me in loving energy like I never felt before.

I was one of them, and they were part of me. They held me, they supported me, they were always there for me, even though we lived all over the world. I let them offer to her what they offered me then. I imagine her feeling the drum beat and the sound of the rattles....we are in a dark space with candles and fairy lights and the smell of sage burning lingers in the air. I tell her to let the drum fill her body up with strength and support and to feel the love.

I tell her to look into the fire and hear it crackle and to see how a web of women in the spirit world also connected to her and holding her, the Sisterhood of the Shields, the Grandmothers, her guides, her power animals, her ancestors, the fairies...they are all surrounding her and with her at all times giving her strength and power.

They all have a hand on her shoulder, she is the farthest thing from alone. I ask her to imagine that strength and love and power is like gold dust being sent from everyone in the room and in the energy world to her. I ask her to imagine it going in her and with each inhale in her body and with each second that passes she is being beamed with the light of strength and sisterhood.

I close my eyes and feel the sensations with her. I feel the web of women weaving love around me and her supporting us and

I tell her to see it filling her body, to feel the confidence and love and support. She does and so do I. I can see she feels stronger and supported...a shift has happened I feel it in my heart chakra.

I thank everyone at the circle with us for such a powerful experience and I grab her hand and go through a door that lingers in a giant boulder into the now... bringing with us the felt experience and gifts of support and love and strength into the now. I imagine putting a shawl on her to remind her of the hands that hugged her and literally have and touched her back offering their support.

I allow that image of her feeling stronger with her shawl in my heart to expand and fill my body.

To Curb Coronavirus, What’s Behind The Wearing Of A Mask?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday recommended wearing cloth face masks when going out, especially to places like grocery stores and pharmacies.

That’s because a “significant portion” of people with the virus lack symptoms or can transmit the disease through close contact before they show signs of illness, the CDC said. It is not recommending people try to purchase N95 or surgical masks, and the federal agency included online instructions on making masks out of materials at home.

The recommendation is optional. President Donald Trump, for instance, said he didn’t envision wearing one. But in recent days, the number of people sporting some type of protective face gear appears to have soared.

So what gives?

Many experts agree that wearing a mask probably won’t keep people from getting the coronavirus, but it might help prevent those with the disease — especially those without symptoms ― from spreading it.

The CDC’s announcement — which came after days of deliberation among White House officials, the coronavirus task force and other public health figures about the need for such a guideline — brings with it caution.

First, masks could give people a false sense of security.

“We don’t want people to feel like, ‘Oh, I’m wearing a mask. I’m protected and I’m protecting others,’” said Dr. Deborah Birx, during a White House briefing last week before the CDC issued its recommendation. Birx, a member of the president’s coronavirus task force, made clear that wearing a mask would not replace the need for frequent hand-washing and continued social distancing.

Another concern is that the recommendation could further strain the supply of medical-grade masks for health care workers, if consumers flooded the market to get their hands on one. Earlier statements from U.S. officials downplayed the use of face masks in public, in part for this reason.

But those messages ran counter to what other countries ― particularly in Asia — have recommended or required. Face masks have been ubiquitous in countries such as China, South Korea and Japan during the outbreak.

Before the CDC recommendation, residents in some hard-hit American cities, such as Los Angeles and New York, were encouraged to wear masks in public. Riverside County in Southern California mandated it.

Another issue: Homemade masks — and some store-bought ones ― don’t fit as tightly as medical masks.

“Virus can sneak around the edges,” said Melissa Perry, a professor of environmental and occupational health at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

There’s also the matter of the fabric.

“What I see are people buying masks on the web that are fashionable, but the fabric is thin,” said John Lednicky, an aerovirologist at the University of Florida, who studies how viruses spread through the air. “If the weave is not tight enough, the virus will go right through them.”

Still, he said, a homemade mask “is better than nothing” if it could block some particles expelled by an infected person. But he cautioned that a mask protects only the nose and mouth areas. Another route of transmission is through the eyes. So, again, don’t touch your face or rub your eyes if possible.

Might eyeglasses add protection from particles?

“There’s some protection from eyeglasses, but there’s a lot of space around eyeglasses, so air currents can still hit your eyes,” he said.

And one more caution: “When putting it on and taking it off, you have to be careful. You might end up getting virus all over your hands,” said Marcus Plescia, chief medical officer with the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials. “Discard it carefully.”

If it’s made of fabric, wash it. If it’s paper or some other material, put it in a sealed plastic bag and throw it away. Wash your hands after.

Transmission Out Of Thin Air?

Researchers are debating whether simply talking or breathing can send tiny virus particles airborne ― and whether those bits would be in great enough quantity to allow for transmission to another person.

This critical question has no clear answer.

No doubt a cough or sneeze can shoot out droplets several feet, but those are relatively large and heavy and quickly fall to the ground, researchers say. Still, that’s a main route of transmission because the droplets can either land on a close contact — defined by the World Health Organization as within 1 meter ― or fall on surfaces, which other people then touch, possibly picking up the virus.

Staying 6 feet away from others and washing your hands a lot helps reduce the risk packed by droplets.

But what about smaller particles — those aerosols created simply by exhaling that can float in the air longer?

Evidence is not clear.

A special panel last week released a report reviewing studies from the U.S. and China, raising the possibility of airborne transmission. The studies’ findings suggest that normal breathing can release aerosolized virus, according to the letter from a special pandemic committee at the National Academy of Sciences to the head of the White House’s Office of Science and Technology Policy.

But, the committee added, “one must be cautious,” because what the studies found may not represent “viable virus in sufficient amounts to produce infection.”

The WHO, in a March 20 report, took a more cautious approach, saying there isn’t enough information to say such tiny particles are airborne outside of medical settings.

Aerosols containing the virus can occur during some medical procedures, such as ventilating a patient, the WHO said, which puts health care workers at risk. Further study is needed, the report concluded, to see if the virus shows up in air samples in patient rooms where no such procedures took place and “whether viable virus is found and what role it may play in transmission.”

Given the uncertainty, the bottom line, Lednicky and others said, is to avoid close contact and take other reasonable protective steps.

Masks are good to ensure that you are not transmitting the virus to others. But don’t forget about that 6-foot zone of personal space.

How Does This Translate To Everyday Life?

Experts agree that in the midst of this pandemic ― while people are encouraged to stay at home and isolate — it’s still important for physical and mental health to get exercise by walking or running. But what happens when you cross paths with another person, who may not be wearing a mask?

“More distance is better no matter what,” said Dr. Georges Benjamin, executive director of the American Public Health Association, who said there is only a small likelihood that you are running through a mist that might contain the virus.

“If you want to hold your breath [while passing near others], fine, but it’s probably not necessary,” he said.

And then there’s your neighbor’s friendly dog. Researchers don’t believe pets can transmit the disease. Still, to protect the pet, they suggest that those who are sick to avoid caring for or sharing their food with the animal, said Benjamin. Because keeping a proper distance from your neighbor is also key, it might be a good idea to skip the dog-petting.

“I would just say ‘Hi’ right now,” said Benjamin.

Overall, most health officials appear to consider masks a good idea. But they agree on three constants in this quickly changing matter: Keep your distance from others outside your household. Wash your hands ― often. And don’t touch your face.

If you’ve been following this blog with any regularity, you may have noticed how often references to R.E.M. weave their way into my appraisals of other artists. That’s because the band has become a bit of a Rosetta Stone for my musical taste: eclectic, ever-evolving, beautifully melodic, with evocative (or downright inscrutable) lyrics. I delved into their decades-long catalogue- piecemeal and out of chronology in the pre-Spotify days- at the exact point in my adolescence when I was forming what that taste would be. And now I must ask the question that has so ignited the public's curiosity: When did I first hear of the band R.E.M.?

My answer, at long last, is… "Hmm, not sure." The Body, Mind and Soul from a slightly different perspective

So heres something a little different …

Let’s view the Body, Mind and Soul as the Fascia, Vagus Nerve and the Psoas Muscle.

What the heck am i talking about?

Let me explain…

BODY: The Fascia

How do YOU view the body?

Something that doesn’t look good in a bikini? something that rocks in a bikini? a sheath that contains our energy source? a walking, talking flesh sack?

However we view it, we can see it, touch it, move it.

And in the bodies physical make up is the fascia.

The fascia simply fascinates me, i could write a whole article on this alone. When teaching yoga and massage i always try to weave this into my teaching for students, why? because it is THEE link to our emotional centre. When we realise this, it opens the door to a wave of release, a release of physical and emotional stored tension - how cool is that?

The fascia is a webbing of connective tissue that surrounds our organs and connects layers of muscles, think of the thin sinew like sheath on chicken breasts. (if your vegan like me you’ll find that gross but it’s the best description out there).

See if you can see in your minds eye the body without it’s skin, bringing into focus the red lines of muscles that we see in text books, envision a thin like sinew over the muscle that carries and stores ALL your past and present emotions.

Look down, view your upper thigh in this way, now wring or knead your thigh, feel good?

That is what we call the power of touch!

When we wring and knead the body we move the fascia, releasing past tension, some even say past trauma at a cellular level.

It feels good to wring and knead something right? wringing out the washing, kneading bread - it feels good because its releasing. Our arms and wrists carry and hold tension, sometimes a lot more than we can handle.

When it comes to emotions wrists are linked to flexibility - wrists are considered to be the most flexible part of the body, a little bit more about flexibility later on.

That is why having regular massages and practicing yoga daily is so good for us.

Yoga twists are OMazing for release, add in breathing and connecting to stillness and silence and it’s like having a personal mini therapy session OM the matt.

So next time you view your body and you feel an ache or tension somewhere - release it physically through movement (side note: obviously be careful of injuries and medical conditions may need to get doctors consent). That pain in the neck, the weight of the world on your shoulders - track back …who or what has emotionally caused this tension - the body and mind are linked.

Release of adrenaline/Cortisol = hormones that are both ageing & unbalancing, ever notice people who look way older than there years are usually stressed and wrung out?

In Ayurveda we look at prevention and the 6 stages of disease.

First we wake up feeling ‘meh’ - not ill but out of sorts - this is dis - ease within the body, your first sign that something is not quite right.

Most of us don't look within and track back to the root cause, instead we swallow, store and solider on, we then keep going through the 6 stages until it becomes full blown disease.
