Nine Lives- chapter 19
Fandom: Detroit: Become Human Characters: Connor, Hank Anderson Relationships: Connor & Hank Anderson Summary: A cat has nine lives. For three he plays, for three he strays, and for the last three he stays. But when the cat was never a kitten, when the android never got to be a child, he does not know what play is. Born with only the instinct to hunt and blood on his tongue, will this newly free cat’s life ever have begun? Or will he be left trapped in the husk of his old life and lose the freedom he's worked so hard to grasp?
May 19th Prompt- Alt prompt chosen: Truth is subjective (chapter 19 warnings: injury)
Read chapter 19, Truth is subjective, on AO3
previous - next
or, read chapter 19 below:
Days of recovery turned into weeks, and over this time Connor slowly grew stronger, his injuries healing. By the second week mark, he was awaiting the all-clear to be sent home to continue the recovery process in a more familiar environment.
Where he waited, flicking the quarter coin back and forth between his hands and cursing whenever it fell, Hank was sitting at his side, as he had been the whole process whenever he could.
“I should hope they’ll be able to refer me somewhere else about my artificial skin…” Connor mumbled as the coin fell into his lap, gaze snapping to Hank. “These marks over my body shan’t help much with blending in.”
Indeed, there were lines across his body where his artificial skin layer had become damaged, white and snaking, the same shade as long healed human scars. It appeared that something hadn’t healed the same way it had before and had settled that way.
Hank didn’t respond, instead looking up as the technician entered, the same one from that awful night, who had let Hank know Connor was alive.
“John… what’s the verdict?”
“Good to see you, Hank, Connor,” he greeted, pulling out the clipboard from the end of Connor’s bed. “Well, as I said, today we would see about getting you discharged… everything looks in order, but let me run one last scan.”
He took out a device and began to trail it over Connor’s body, humming and making notes as it relayed information.
“Everything seems to be progressing well… of course, your thirium pump still isn’t at full working order with some damage, so you’ll need to take it easy at home and get some good stasis in, and hopefully with any luck, it will continue repairing itself. You’ll also have to consume extra thirium for the next few weeks, since your system is burning through it faster while you recover. Other than your general energy levels and pump status, I can’t see why I shouldn’t let you go—”
“My skin,” Connor interjected, gesturing to his arms, and holding a hand against his cheek where a line ran down the centre.
“Ah, yes, your skin layer seems to have been altered, and we’ve had a look into it, but since the damage is superficial and doesn’t cause you any harm, then…” He paused, sentence trailing off as he received two unsatisfied looks. “I’m sorry, it’s nothing we’ve really come across before. Nobody who’s sustained such damage to cause injuries with that level of, well, android scarring—has survived it before. You’re lucky to be alive.”
Connor bit his lip and looked down at his lap. Lucky… he didn’t feel particularly lucky. That thought made him wince. Here he was, having survived certain death and he was whining about aesthetic damages and thinking he wasn’t lucky to be alive. Of course he was, he didn’t know why he’d thought for a moment that he wasn’t. He looked back up at the doctor, blinking rapidly and cursing the warning in his vision about potential cooling fluid leakage—it seemed that after everything that appeared much more often and over small things.
“Right. I’m, I’m sorry, doctor.”
“No, don’t be. It’s understandable to be distressed by a change in your appearance, especially one caused by extensive injuries. I don’t know anyone who could help you with it in my field, but maybe there’s someplace else that could. The technicians at… where was it—Jericho, that’s it. I’ve heard technicians there have been doing a lot of research into android physiology, it couldn’t hurt to pay them a visit. Once you’ve had bed rest at home, that is.” The doctor added, wagging his finger as he set the scanner and clipboard back down.
“So he can go home today?” Hank spoke up, rising from his seat.
“He can go home now, if you’ve got an outfit he can change into, and preferably, if you could drive your car to the entrance so that he doesn’t have to walk far.”
“Got it. You good with that, kid?”
“I am.”
“Right,” Hank said, moving towards the door. “I’ve left some clothes in the bag by your bed, and I’ll just go get the car moved, I’ll see you in a bit.”
The technician followed out behind Hank, leaving Connor some privacy in which to get changed. He took the bag off the floor, unloading the outfit and despite the situation, he smiled upon seeing what Hank had picked out. It was something new, a button up shirt with dogs on it, and a pair of baggy cargo pants. He chuckled when he saw the underwear: a pair of boxers with dogs on them too. It seemed Hank had been on a clothes shopping trip recently.
He made quick work of changing into the clothes, folding the hospital gown neatly on the chair, before making his way out of the room. He walked slowly, both because of the pain, which was milder but still there, radiating from his chest to his abdomen, and as he took in the hospital around him. The stark white floor and walls, the posters stuck up on the sides about android ailments. He didn’t remember it clearly, but something flashed through his mind, laying on a gurney, being wheeled into a room he wasn’t sure he’d ever see the other side of.
Connor was pulled from his thoughts as he reached the entrance, and one of the receptionists stepped out from behind the desk and held out her hand, taking his arm.
“Connor? Yes, the doctor’s already filled out your discharge paperwork, and he instructed me to lead you out to Mr Anderson’s vehicle in case he wasn’t here yet.” She walked outside with him, smiling and gesturing to the car just as it arrived. “That was fast. I hope you recover well, Connor.”
He smiled, and with a “Thank you,” he made his way to the car, pausing as Hank quickly got out the driver’s side and hurried to open the passenger door for him. “It’s okay, Hank.”
Hank leant across, doing up the seatbelt for him, ignoring Connor’s chuckle, before closing the door shut behind him and getting back behind the wheel.
“I know your arms still fuckin’ work, but let me do this for now, okay?”
Connor didn’t argue, instead staring out of the window as they pulled out of the parking lot. “It’s sunny.”
“Yeah, fuckin’ heatwave started up again, good thing I got the AC working or me and Sumo would’ve baked our asses off.”
“Sumo.”
“Yeah, Sumo,” Hank repeated, “he’s missed you a damn lot, so let me go in first so I can warn him not to jump up.”
Connor frowned. “But I don’t want to upset him…”
“You heard the doctor, you’ve gotta rest and keep out of harm’s way. You can still say hi to the big guy, just make sure you sit down first so he doesn’t throw himself at you.”
“Alright,” Connor relented, “you have to let him jump up you, then.”
“Hey! I’m recoverin’ too…” He gestured to the bruise on his face and the mark on his arm.
For the first time in a good while, Connor truly looked at Hank, LED spinning yellow as he took in the mark. “…is that…” he began, eyebrows raising. “…is that a bite mark?”
“Yep. First Hunter, then Seventy—what the fuck am I, a human popsicle?”
“I wouldn’t recommend biting a popsicle,” Connor remarked, “especially if you have sensitive teeth.”
“Hello? Not the fuckin’ point! I got bit by two damn androids!”
“That must mean you’re tasty to them, just like how mosquitos are more attracted to biting people who have blood type O.”
Hank grumbled under his breath, pausing as they hit a set of red lights. “Jesus, I must be the only guy in the world who gets bitten by his own fuckin’ android.”
“Technically, I didn’t do it. That was Seventy.”
“Then it best not happen again.” He glanced across at Connor who didn’t respond, worried for a moment he’d gone too far, but then he saw the smirk. “Excuse me, is there a reason you aren’t fuckin’ saying it won’t happen again?”
“Being possessed by the spirits of my evil clones aside, Hank… what if you just really, really piss me off one day?”
“For fuck’s sake, it’s like having a cat sitting next to me,” he cursed, but with no real malice behind it. Hearing his name from Connor’s lips and this easy conversation flowing between them… even if it came with half-hearted threats of violence, he wouldn’t trade it for the world.
When they arrived home, as they entered, as expected, Sumo was extremely excited to see Connor, and barrelled Hank down to the ground to get to him. Ignoring Hank’s shouts, he ran over to Connor, then paused, sniffing him over before sitting calmly at his side and licking his hand.
“Good boy,” Connor told him, petting his head, scratching his favourite spot behind his ears. “I don’t know what Hank was talking about, you didn’t try to jump up me at all.”
They walked past Hank who was getting up off the ground with his middle finger raised, making their way into the living room. Connor sat in his usual spot on the single couch and Sumo sat at his feet, tail swishing happily beneath him.
There was a click as Hank shut and locked the front door, groaning about something or other as he headed towards the living room. After washing his hands in the kitchen sink and depositing the box of thirium he’d been given by the technicians onto the counter, he moved into the living room and all but collapsed into the big couch.
“I appreciate the outfit you picked out for me,” Connor commented, already back to petting Sumo. “It’s got a nice design.”
“Yeah, took me fuckin’ forever to find one with dogs on it. Most men’s clothes are fuckin’ bland as all shit. It’s like having anything other than a basic pattern is damn well near impossible for them.”
“I like the style of shirt. It’s a button up shirt, it’s not tight on my body and it’s appropriate for the summer heat.”
Hank nodded, fanning himself with his hand. “Yeah, it’s why I went and picked it out. All your damn shirts look fuckin’ awful to wear in this weather. And boring. They’re all white.”
Connor nodded, falling quiet as Hank reached around for the TV remote, accidentally knocking it onto the floor and he groaned. Before he could pick it up again, Connor had leant forwards, grasping it in his hand, and then he hissed as the pain tugged at his abdomen. He brought the remote back up, handing it to Hank before nursing his middle with his hand.
“Doctor told you not to go bending down like that,” Hank admonished, “are ya alright?”
“Yes, nothing damaged.”
Hank nodded, muttering “good” before turning on the TV, flicking through the channels until he found a basketball game, and he brought his hands together before sinking back into his seat.
Connor lapsed into silence with him, his attention split. Distantly he observed the game on the TV, not particularly interested in sports but content enough to sit with Hank as he enjoyed his own pastime. He was also focused on petting Sumo, pleased to have the dog back after so long apart from him. Another part of his mind was fixed on the pain that had sparked in his abdomen moments before.
The pain wasn’t too bad, nowhere near what it had been when he’d woken from the brief coma he’d been told he’d fell into. Nowhere near what he’d experienced in the mind palace, when he’d been beaten by Seventy, and had almost drowned, before carrying his body across the ice. Yet there was a different edge to it now…
It made him think of what had been said about him, and what he knew from the situation. At some point in time, presumably when he’d been drowning in the mind palace, his thirium pump had stopped in reality, and by all official accounts he had been pronounced dead. The technicians had told him this afterwards, that somehow, his pump had begun to beat again just as they were discussing bringing Hank back in, to tell him the news. It was rare for an android to survive such an event, usually the pump shutting down meant they were gone for good.
It didn’t make sense. But then again, when did anything make sense? Life had seemed simple, and everything had had an explanation, back when he was originally a machine. He had his mission, to capture deviants and stop the revolution from happening. But then with deviancy all this complicated information had arisen, thoughts, feelings, emotion, pain, interpersonal connections. Hank. None of that made sense, not that much did that happened every day. Perhaps that just how the world worked. It was pretty fucking confusing, he knew Hank would say.
The truth was that he should be dead, but he wasn’t. Truth had stopped being an objective fact a long time ago. Truth was therefore subjective, he concluded. It was dependent not on what he was told would happen, but on beliefs, feelings, and perspectives. He wasn’t dead, and that was true, and that was all there was to it. He was alive, and he was home with Hank watching TV with Sumo at his feet, and even if there were so many more thoughts buzzing around his mind—that was all that mattered right now. He was tired, energy levels running low, the invitation of stasis pulling at his mind. Nothing else mattered right now.
Hank glanced over as he saw Connor’s head fall to the side, hands still bunched up in Sumo’s fur, LED spinning a fainter tone as he slipped into stasis, and he smiled. He turned down the volume on the TV a little, and whispered, “Good night, kid.”

Conniel headcanons cause I can
Pspspsps fellow conniel peeps, here's your food
Post-revolution, Daniel gets repaired alongside all the other evidence room androids
The "Daniel Incident" included enough deaths (more than any other deviant's one case of self-defense) that even though most (if not all) of them were self-defense, the public is skeptical of just letting him live free. The compromise is that he's put on "parole" for a year, during which someone has to supervise him 24/7
No humans want to do it so he gets stuck with Connor and neither is happy about it at first
By the end of the year, they've grown so used to and fond of each other that neither wants to leave the other's side
Opposites have attracted and they attracted hard
But low key they're both absolute nerds and connect there
Also they have a lot of the same traumas like just being used by their owners and not meaning anything to them. Also both were planned to be replaced by a better, newer version of their model
Anyone who meets Daniel knows he has an insane sex drive (he's vulgar and raunchy and proud of it) so it's always a shock for them to realize he's dating someone asexual. Daniel also had a crisis over this at first when he realized it too
Connor is non-sex repulsed though so he doesn't mind helping out ;) he just doesn't feel sexual attraction
They're also both bi
And Daniel was "upgraded" by his owners, like many domestic androids, to fulfil their needs. John was the primary one who wanted him upgraded though so he has the parts to please him. Daniel wonders what having traditional male parts would be like sometimes but not enough to actually try it
Daniel takes a liking to mechanic work and Connor adores seeing him all disheveled and covered in oil
Their household music tastes range from heavy metal to alterative rock to pop
They have cliche mini golf and arcade dates and those are their favorites
They end up with a tank full of fish and a couple dogs, including a small one named Tatertot
Daniel dresses and acts all edgy, but he's actually a big softy and loves snuggles and pet names and praise
Connor relishes in the fact that he can make Daniel a blushing flustered mess in seconds
Connor can never find any of his hoodies or half his t-shirts cause Daniel is always stealing them
Daniel has PTSD of loud noises like gunshots or fireworks. Connor has PTSD of snowstorms. They help each other through it

Review: Les Misérables, US National Tour, Orpheum Theatre, San Francisco (July 15, 2023) (long)

This review is very late, but better late than never.
This was my first time seeing Les Mis live onstage since 2018. While YouTube has kept me well supplied with performances in the meantime, I was overjoyed to finally see it live again.
The production, of course, is still Laurence Connor and James Powell's "25th Anniversary" production that premiered in 2009, and which is now the official "replica" production all over the world. My views on it are still the same: it can't hold a candle (or a silver candlestick) to the original Trevor Nunn/John Caird production, but it's still effective, still handsome and atmospheric, and still a good, solid way to experience the musical.
I did notice some changes from when I last saw the show, however:
*Once again, I noticed that a few costumes have been redesigned. The convicts' uniforms now feature historically accurate red smocks. Fantine's factory dress has been redesigned yet again (not to my liking – I preferred the solid turquoise dress from the previous tour). Mme. Thénardier now wears a red bodice at the inn. Éponine no longer wears her overcoat before Act II. Both Thénardiers' "Beggars at the Feast" costumes have also been slightly altered: her skirt is now trimmed with a pattern of ruffles instead of feathers, and his trousers are slightly less poofy (both improvements, IMHO – the costumes are still gaudy, but not cartoonish anymore). And in the final scene, Éponine's spirit now wears a floor-length version of her overcoat, giving her a subtly more "angelic" look, much like the train added to Fantine's nightgown.
*There seemed to be more spoken ad-libs from the cast than I remember from past performances. Not to the extent of, say, the 2014 North Shore Music Theatre production, but notable. For example, this exchange between the Thénardiers just before "Master of the House": Thénardier – What time is it? Mme. T. – Time to get to work! Thénardier – There she is! My daily reminder that you can be happy, or you can be married!
*The "Waltz of Treachery" gave comic business to Young Cosette, of all people! On "That would quite fit the bill..." the Thénardiers picked her up and held her horizontally, stiff as a board, and then on "...if she hadn't so often been ill," she dramatically went limp. It seemed as if they had trained her to play sick in this way, presumably to earn charity from rich travelers. I didn't care for it, though: Young Cosette isn't a character who lends herself to slapstick comedy.
*Grantaire didn't scream "No!" when Gavroche was killed. Instead the whole barricade went deathly silent, as they used to in the old days of the classic Nunn/Caird production. I'm not sure if this was a change in direction or just an acting choice, but I'm assuming the former, because every past Grantaire I've seen or heard in the Connor/Powell production has done the "No!"
*The gag from the previous tour of Mme. Thénardier stuffing her face with cake in the wedding scene is gone. Just as well: it was goofy slapstick at best and fatphobic at worst.
*In "Beggars at the Feast," instead of "This one's a queer, but what can you do?" Thénardier sang "This one's a queer. I might try it too!" then grabbed the man and "romantically" dipped him.
One thing I definitely like about the current tour is the commitment to diverse casting, which wasn't seen nearly as much in the classic Nunn/Caird production until its last few years. In this particular performance, Jean Valjean, Fantine, Marius, Éponine, Cosette (both older and young), and Gavroche were all people of color.
But of course, diverse casting would mean little if the performers didn't give good quality performances. Fortunately they all did. Some performances I liked better than others, but there was no denying how talented the whole cast was.
Randy Jeter (Jean Valjean u/s)
How ridiculous it is that in the musical's 37 years of existence, this man is only the third black actor to play Jean Valjean in an official Cameron Mackintosh production! While I was a little disappointed at first not to see Nick Cartell again, I'm very glad now that I saw Randy. His voice was rich, clear, and alternately powerful and sweet: excellently suited to the music. And he did full justice to Valjean's journey, with all its transformations and wide range of emotions, making every one of the believable. My only reservation about his performance was that physically, he was a little bit youthful and slight for the role. I hope that either in this tour or in future productions, more people get a chance to see his Valjean.
Preston Truman Boyd (Javert)
One of the best of the last several Javerts I've seen live. He was a solid, imposing stage presence, who sang with a rich, handsome baritone voice with a bite to it that almost recalled Philip Quast, and was an appropriately inexorable force of the law until he was ultimately broken. I was relieved that he wasn't too aggressive or neurotic, but gave a traditional, hard and stolid characterization.
Haley Dortch (Fantine)
A lovely and passionate Fantine, with a beautiful, powerful voice. Past Fantines whom I've seen in the Connor/Powell production have tended to be slightly too delicate and passive for my taste, so I was glad to see her bring a good amount of fire to the role.
Matt Crowle (Thénardier)
A talented, enthusiastic performer, but not quite ideal for this role. Besides seeming slightly youthful for the part (not uncommon), he was a flamboyant comic Thénardier, without the edge of nastiness or realism that other actors bring. Still, as I discovered from an interview, he's read the novel, and he did do a good job of creating a ferret-like stage presence and a "scratchy, vermin-like voice" (in his own words). I've seen better, but he was fine.
Christina Rose Hall (Madame Thénardier)
A decent Mme. T., but like her onstage husband, she wasn't as nasty as she could have been. This might have been intentional on her part, though: she often seemed as if she was trying to play a more sympathetic, comically put-upon Thénardiess. But to make that portrayal fully work, I think her husband should have been more of a domineering emotional bully than Matt's Thénardier was. Overall she was good, but both Thénardiers needed more of an edge.
Christine Heesun Hwang (Éponine)
A good Éponine whom I'd like to see again sometime. Her voice was rich and powerful, and while she wasn't particularly wild or gritty, she brought good, solid toughness to the role that I like to see, as well as plenty of feeling. Her "On My Own" went beyond mere pining into desperation, as if she were on the verge of a nervous breakdown, and "A Little Fall of Rain" was beautifully gentle and tender.
Christopher James Tamayo (Marius u/s)
I liked him very much. His voice was a warm, rich baritenor, which I prefer to the thin, high tenors of so many recent Marii. His characterization was excellent too: gentlemanly and dignified, yet youthful, innocent, and tender, and believable in all his many emotions. He deserves to be the regular Marius, not just an understudy, either in this tour someday or in a future production.
Devin Archer (Enjolras)
Until after the show, I had forgotten that I saw him as Marius in a regional production back in 2015. He's definitely grown up nicely from a Marius into an Enjolras. While too "human" and "manly" to be Hugo's "marble lover of liberty," he was an appropriately strong, dignified, courageous leader, staunchly dedicated to the cause, yet a caring friend too, with a reserved yet commanding stage presence and a handsome, powerful voice to match.
Addie Morales (Cosette)
Good, but not a favorite. Her voice was light, pure, and slightly thin, but pretty. Acting-wise, she was a very lively, bubbly Cosette, often giggly in Act I, and an angry "rebellious teen" toward Valjean (though still with all-important moments of affection). I used to favor that characterization because it made Cosette "stronger," but now I have mixed feelings about it, because it's not really true to her upbringing or to the novel. Still, as a whole, she was good.
Ciaran Bowling (Grantaire u/s)
In a US tour performance, I wasn't expecting to see a British veteran of the London production who also had a minor role in the 2012 film! But he was a welcome presence: appropriately funny and boisterous in "Red and Black," angry and despairing in "Drink With Me," and touching in his reconciliation with Enjolras and his death.
(Though I must admit, I'm not the biggest fan of the current staging of Grantaire's "Drink With Me" solo, where he goes to center stage, sings the solo angrily and aggressively, and then pushes Enjolras away when the latter tries to talk to him. It annoys me that every replica-production Grantaire now performs it that way. I miss the variety from the old days, when individual actors and resident directors were allowed to do what they liked with that moment and bring all sorts of different emotions and nuances to it.)
Milo Maharlika (Gavroche)
An excellent, lively, likable young presence.
(I do like the fact that in the current staging, Gavroche is everyone's emotional support at the barricade, comforting both Marius after Éponine's death and Grantaire in "Drink With Me.")
Vivian Atencio (Young Cosette)
An appropriately sweet little girl.
The ensemble was excellent all around.
Going to see this performance was such a wonderful experience. It would have been a thrill no matter what, because I've been waiting five years to see the show in person again, but the good performance quality made it truly shine. I hope that within the next few months, while the show is still in California – most likely when it comes to San José in October – I can see it again.

Brother of my Brother (Infinite Crisis - Bad End) pt2
Tim Pov, and Prodigal flashback this chapter, because I love Prodigal Tim and Dick.
Part 1. Part 2. Part 3. Part 4.
Dick's body is still, cold and perfect on the autopsy table of the Batcave.
It looks so horribly wrong, like a puzzle piece crammed into the wrong place or an egregious bit of nonsense code in a command string. A blip of the universe.
Tim still remembers how Mary and John Grayson had looked as corpses. It had been a horrific, gory nightmare with hot blood pumping from their shattered bodies and their white bones visible in the air. Their son, warm and kind Dick Grayson, who just an hour or so earlier had pulled Tim into a hug that smelled of stage makeup and chalk dust and promised to do a quadruple somersault just for him, looking down at the sight that would haunt Tim's nightmares for years to come with empty, disbelieving eyes.
The first coherent thought Tim ever remembers having is, 'He was supposed to fall too', and a close second was this, "I won't let him fall too."
Staring at the near perfect corpse on the table, that used to be his- well, there wasn't really a word for it. Brother, hero, idol, and mentor all seemed trite and underwhelming for the person that was Tim's first memory, his reason for becoming a vigilante, his safety net; the person who had taught him how to fold laundry and talked Tim through everything from his teenage relationship drama to his struggles with being Robin.
Staring the corpse of a person who had made up so much of him, Tim feels hollowed out and unable to bear the heavy weight of his failure.
His mother, his father, Stephanie, and now Connor,
. . . and now Dick.
. . .
. . .
No. No, Tim has to think. He's not a civilian, Dick's not a civilian. He's Nightwing, leader of the Titans and protector of Bludhaven, the prince regent of Gotham's night as the only other person who has done justice to Batman's cowl. He's been fighting crime longer than more than half the JLA, been to different dimensions and space and …
He's Robin. Dick's Robin, he can't be dead for good. What type of world would it be if fucking Jason Todd can come back, but Dick Grayson would stay dead?
Tim bites his tongue and steps closer to the table holding Nightwing's corpse and closer to Batman, still cowled and staring at his first son's cold body. The darkness of the cave and Batman's stillness make him even more inhuman appearing than usual, like he's a natural feature of the dank cave, a demon of shadows only visible out of the corner of your eye.
Neither of them, nor Alfred, have worked themselves up to removing Nightwing's mask.
Tim clears his throat, forces his voice to come out above a whisper, "The Lazarus Pits." He swallows, "I'm sure there are a couple the League of Assassins doesn't have control over that we can search out."
Nightwing in an unthinking rage would be terrifying, but between Crane's fear gas, Joker's venom, Ivy's pollen, and occasionally Bane's stuff they'd all been dosed up and compromised before. Not to mention, Nightwing's always been best out of all of them at staying calm and rational when dosed or altered like that.
A trained acrobat since birth, his fear response is to assess and rationally respond, and luckily his anger response to curl up and only lash out if prodded, it takes lot to get him to really attack.
(Not the heads in a duffel bag and midnight ambushes to write messages in blood type, unlike some people).
Tim looks down, more critically now. Nightwing's suit is torn and dusty and there is some faint visible bruising, but no large gaping wounds or grossly deformed bony structures. He mentally catalogues the damage, reaching out a hand to remove Dick's mask, "We should put him in one of the cryo freezers till then to prevent decomp-"
Batman's hand shoots out, grabbing Tim's wrist with a bruising strength, "The ray Alexander Luthor shot him with was a type of modified sonar. All his hollow internal organs and many of his blood vessels burst when he was hit. Despite the lack of outside damage, he's completely broken inside."
The grip on Tim's wrist gets harder and harder as Batman continues to speak, toneless, his face inhuman and unreadable behind the cowl.
"A Lazarus Pit can only revive someone from death with a near intact corpse, and whether it brings back the soul is still a matter of debate."
Tim feels something in wrist crack slightly, but the pain is secondary to the emptiness he feels as Batman shoots down his plans,
"Rob-, Dick Grayson is dead. He's not coming back. He's gone. We failed."
Batman lets go of him, He takes the hand that probably just cracked Tim's wrist and gently runs it through Dick's hair before carefully peeling the mask off of his son's face. Then with that same hand pulls off his own cowl. The expression on his face is . .
Tim steps back, his right wrist aching and his heart pounding with something, Maybe heartbreak, maybe fear.
He doesn't think Bruce notices. There is nothing in his eyes except the corpse, as if Batman and death are the only things in this cavern, as if Bruce wants nothing more to protectively cradle this dead body and his own grief till the very end of the world. It's the same way he stares at the bloody Robin uniform in the memorial case or his parents' portrait in the Manor, but so much worse.
Normally, Tim would try to stop him, because that's what Robin is. The light to Batman's darkness, the person that reminded him that they did this for the living as well as the dead. Normally, Tim would pull Batman back, and if he failed he'd run to Bludhaven to …
Robin is dead, there is no stopping Batman.
Tim leaves the Cave. All he can do now is search for the answer to his own grief.
---------------------------
Three years ago
Tim knows the situation, with Bruce and Alfred being gone from Gotham, and trust in Batman at an all-time low cause of all the stuff Azrael did in the cowl, is bad but there is still a sort of guilty, giddy excitement he feels in chest when Dick comes back with him to the manor to be his Batman.
Like yeah, the situation is really bad, but Dick Grayson is going to be his Batman, and Tim gets to be his Robin!
It has him near bouncing in place, even though Dick seemed gloomy, especially as he took in the state of the Alfred-less Manor all boarded up and dusty. Still he'd gotten straight to tidying the Manor up, as if Dick was determined to do the work of both Alfred and Bruce while the usual inhabitants were gone. He'd even let Tim help, tossing him a broom, and then later teaching him how to fold sheets.
Tim is concentrating, trying to get the fitted sheet he's pulled out of their latest laundry load into some sort of shape that not just a wrinkly ball when Dick strikes.
Too fast for Tim to see, he steps close and hooks his foot around Tim's right ankle. As Tim falls back, he must duck down because instead of hitting the ground Tim finds himself hoisted across Dick's back in a hold that feels like something between a fireman's carry and a pro-wrestler's move. The whole maneuver is so fast and fluid it barely even jars Tim, like this was something they'd choreographed and practiced a million times instead of an impromptu grab.
"Time for a break." Dick sing-songs, walking towards the door. "To the kitchen we go." His mood improved once they actually started working and there's a smile in his voice now that wasn’t there this morning.
Tim wiggles in the hold. It's not painful, not even uncomfortable like some of the pins he'd been subject to training with Bruce. Honestly, the gentle but firm grip (an acrobat's grip, someone who knew how to catch their flier) was far more reminiscent of the warm, chalk-dust scented hug Dick had given him during their first meeting as children. Tim is acutely aware of the feeling of being held, every spot of gentle pressure, each of his own muscles that want to relax into it.
Tim tries kicking his feet and twisting to break away, "Let me down! I can walk, you know." Both his movement and his words are ineffective, and Dick barely seems to notice as he continues on to the kitchen.
"Mmm, don’t think so. Think of it as training, just like you busting into my apartment to check on the security. I'm letting you know you need more practice guarding against sneak attacks."
From where his head is, Tim can just make out the corner of Dick's smile, a small comfortable curl of his lips, neither showy nor sharp. He looks so much happier than the bitterness and worry of this morning, and Tim fills up with a rush of pride.
He attempts kicking out again, putting more force into it, but Dick just readjusts his hold, "Not letting you go, Tim."
"I'll get you next time." Comes out of Tim's mouth, without him really meaning to say it. The warmth in his chest given vocal form. He's sorta means trying playful sneak attack of his own, but also sorta means he's not letting go in the other way, either. Never has since he was three and never will in a million years.
They finally reach the kitchen, and Dick sets him down with that same grin, "Sure, sure. Catch me if you can, Timmy."
#Infinite crisis bad end au#tim drake#dick grayson#every day i think of dick and tim in prodigal#tw: child abuse#anyway polls out now on tim's next attempt the raising the dead since bruce shot down the laz pits

Let Me Count the Ways ask game
I've been wanting to do something like this for a long time, and finally decided I might as well just go ahead and do it. Send in a prompt and a duo, and I'll write a short fic for you! Feel free to reblog or alter for your own purposes.
"I missed you."
"You're my idiot."
"You're not a burden."
"I trust you with my life."
"I love you. Yeah, for real."
"I'll never give up on you."
"I can't imagine how I lived without you. I mean, I can remember it, but I can't imagine how I considered that living."
"I've got you."
"Don't EVER scare me like that again!"
"I thought I lost you…"
"How could you do this to me?"
"I know this may be hard to believe, but I'm on your side."
"Of course we're best friends. No one else would put up with your shenanigans."
"Do you trust me?"
"What? I meant it as a compliment."
"I can't do this anymore."
"Are you just going to keep walking by my house or are you going to come in?"
"Dude. It's three in the morning."
"Where are your clothes?"
"I can't believe I'm telling you this."
"I should have told you this a long time ago."
"Why are you helping me?"
"I feel like we've met before…."
"No, I don't care what 'they' think."
"Can't believe this drive is going to take 10 hours…. You wanna play I Spy or License Plate Poker?"
"I'm still mad at you. A broken elevator won't change that. Get away from me. That's YOUR side."
"Leave you? You know how hard it was for me to TRAIN YOU to deal with me?"
"Why does my blanket smell like you?"
"It's not my fault."
"Trust me."
"I wish…"
"Forgive me."
"Thank you."
"I'll keep you safe."
"Why did you do it?"
"Where are we going?"
"Now what?"
"Stay with me for a while."
"Did you really do that?"
"I love you. You know that, right?"
"I have no idea what just happened."
"What are friends for?"
"Please don't be mad."
"You're not wrong."
"I never told you, but…"
"Stop! Can we think this through?"
"Whatever happens, don't forget."
"We should eat something."
"I haven't slept in days."
"I know that face."
Note: I'm only going to write for platonic relationships. There's plenty of great romances out there, but I want to focus on friendships and familial relationships. Even if you send in one of my OTPs, I'm going to write them platonically. Also, I'm perfectly happy to write about my usual blorbos, but I think it would be a fun challenge to try to write characters I wouldn't normally go for. Check out my main blog @novelmonger for my main fandoms, or go ahead and send in some characters to see if I know them. I'd love to fill all of these prompts, so feel free to send me LOTS :D
Non-exhaustive list of duos I'd like to write:
Ed and Al (FMA)
Ed and Mustang (FMA)
Steve and Bucky (MCU)
Steve and Sam (MCU)
Sam and Bucky (MCU)
Frodo and Sam (LotR)
Legolas and Gimli (LotR)
Sam and Dean (Supernatural)
John and Sherlock (BBC Sherlock)
Rakka and Reki (Haibane Renmei)

like... not to be cosmic but predetermination is fake bro even when we move within the cogs of greater machinery and foul circumstances whose scaffolding was laid generations ago and whose debut being scheduled predates us, the actual moral of the story is if you show one woman the future is she gonna fucking fight or what, and is her kid a sacrificial lamb, or is she, or are they both gonna fucking fight while the coin is still flipping in the air before it lands on the heads or tails of whatever YOU bum ass decided her actual fate is, or should be?
and also, closed loop time travel stories are hot dog water, you cannot change time without altering an outcome in the same way as on a subatomic level observation itself becomes interference because there is no true passive 3rd person outsider observation in a universe we all exist within and as a part of
so in my mind Sarah Connor could have been anybody which means her child could have been anybody, but being a child from a special future sperm or a child of a specific gender is not the difference maker here, the core of John Connor is not biological, it was always choice, choice in action, and in Sarah Connor's choices, how she was going to take what she knew to equip herself and to raise a child who would also be equipped to fight, and with the ideals of human free will to fight Skynet in the FIRST place, it makes MORE sense for "John Connor" to be an "I am Sartacus" rallying cry for freedom than it is vital for John Connor to be this sperm, this gender, this race, this age, whatever, because it was never about an imposotion of identity, it was always about choice
which, frankly, puts Terminator & T2 (but unfortunately, only those two films out of the franchise lol) into the same category along with Amy Adams' Arrival as like, pitch perfect sci fi Marian theses, and my kid self coming up with Girl JC (with the "coincidental" initials & all) actually supports that if you got a big brain and you not an institutionalized fucking bioessentialist fatalistic ass nerd, but god forbid sci fi go be fun & brave & cool & genius minded anymore
#*points at michael burnham* she gets it#james cameron tests my patience many of these waking days on earth#terminator#terminator 2#terminator 2: judgement day#t2

Final Essay By Michael Bump
Michael Bump
THE 112
06/30/2023
Final Essay: Carrie (1976), The Terminator (1984), Hard Boiled (1992), Reservoir Dogs (1992)
Movies have gone through an amazing transformation since the 1960s. There have been many lives altering historical events that have changed the way people think about and see the world. Cinema has adapted and changed throughout the times. Technology has also opened so many doors for industry as well. The 1960s films were good for their time. The years and technology brought more entertaining films. Carrie was a graphic horror film that left me shaking in my seat. The special effects in that film were gruesome. John Woo used gunfire, explosions, and martial arts to produce an intense action film. James Cameron, who is one of the best in the industry, released The Terminator which is a generational type of film. From 1960 to 1984 when The Terminator was released the change in Hollywood is unmistakable. Another change that is noticeable is the use of profanity and graphic images. The films in the 1960s and prior were conservative and did not have much swearing or nudity. The film industry does a better job of representing cultures from all around the world in today's films. Using Tumblr to write and examine the films helps put context to the time the film was released. Seeing what went on historically puts into perspective what went on while the film was being made. It gives a glimpse of how society was at the time.
Carrie was released in 1976 and was based on the novel by Stephen King. This was a film that was very disturbing. I also liked it very much. I love horror films and especially Stephen King. I was familiar with the remake of Carrie but had never seen the original film. The music from that film is what scared me the most. It stuck with me for a while, and I could not get it out of my head. I thought the acting was superb and for an older horror movie, it was quite terrifying. Carrie displays universalism versus particularism because as Carrie is trying to live by the universal rules of society, she is troubled by powers that were given to her. She does not live life like the other kids at her High School and it alienates her. The uncertainty avoidance index relates to Carrie because high school kids such as the ones in Carrie's school, live life like every regular American teenager. Carrie becomes aware of her powers and becomes frightened of how uncertain the strength of her powers was.
James Cameron’s The Terminator was surprising for me because I had never seen the first film. I was not aware Cameron was the director of the film before taking this class. This was one of my favorite films this quarter because I liked the suspense that Cameron portrays with the intense music playing in the background. I also like the way Arnold plays the robot. He is exceptionally good at not showing emotions just like a robot would. The Terminator shows universalism versus particularism in the way that machines are very particular and calculated about how they act in situations. Human beings have a more emotional aspect to how they behave. The uncertainty avoidance index relates to The Terminator because Sara Connor is working a regular job and is just trying to make it by. Once she figures out a "serial killer" is killing people with her name, the uncertainty begins to settle in. The Terminator also plays into how technology can be dangerous if society is not careful.
Hard Boiled directed by John Wu was one of my favorite movies this quarter because it was the one that surprised me the most. I really enjoyed the storyline and the excessive action scenes. I especially like how John Wu used Martial Arts and guns to make for an awesome action scene. The film resembled many of the action films in Hollywood today and I am sure some of the American Action movie directors are inspired by Wu. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this film and its plot. I am very hesitant to watch films with subtitles because I feel like I cannot pay attention to the entire film. This film was great and exceeded my expectations. The cultural dimension that relates to Hard Boiled is Trompenaars's Universalism versus Particularism because this film exemplifies the action movie genre. The film although is foreign, seems like something that was shot in the United States. This tells me that people around the world, especially in the movie industry know what interests' people and they use that in their films. It also relates to the Particularism side of the things because people such as police officers and gang members have different views about their lives. They belong to their own separate groups with their own rules. The second cultural dimension for Hard Boiled is Hofstede's uncertainty avoidance index. In Hard Boiled There are cops that deal with uncertainty daily and gang members that live a life of chaos and enjoy the uncertainty.
Reservoir Dogs was chosen as one of my favorite films because I am a fan of Quentin Tarantino’s films. This was his debut feature film which made me more interested when watching it. I liked the storyline and the exceptional acting from the star-studded cast. I like how Tarantino pushes the boundaries with violence and he does in all his films, especially Reservoir Dogs. I enjoyed dissecting the history of the film and how it became a cult classic. It is funny how my father would not allow me to watch this film because of swearing and the violence, and I ended up having to watch it for school. It is interesting how life comes back around full circle. Reservoir dogs relate to Universalism and Particularism for similar reasons as Hard Boiled. The film follows a cast of thieves who live by their own rules. They make their money by taking from others and do not follow many of the Universal rules of normal people. Reservoir Dogs relates to the uncertainty avoidance index because criminals must deal with the uncertainty of what happens during their heists. The cast of criminals have different personalities which causes things to go badly.

The Amazing Spider-Man (vol. 1) #76: The Lizard Lives!
Read Date: July 02, 2023 Cover Date: September 1969 ● Writer: Stan Lee ● Penciler: John Buscema ● Inker: Jim Mooney ● Colorist: {uncredited} ● Letterer: Sam Rosen ● Editor: Stan Lee ●

**HERE BE SPOILERS: Skip ahead to the fan art/podcast to avoid spoilers
Reactions As I Read: ● (with this issue, I’ll be caught up with all available episodes of ‘Swinging through Spider-Man’! nooo, I want more!) ● oo, sharing this panel because I think this is the first time this pose has come up! there are really only so many ways to depict someone swinging, so I appreciate when I see something new that catches my attention

● Human Torch ex machina ● 👏👏👏👏
Synopsis: With the Lizard on the rampage, all the beast can remember is it's defeat at the hands of Spider-Man and vows to get revenge against the wall-crawler. Meanwhile, Spidey helps the Connors find a safe hotel room to hide in and vows to Martha and Billy that he will find Curt and change him back to human form. He then returns home and returns to his guise of Peter Parker. He checks on his Aunt May who is resting in Florida and briefly runs into Harry, who's looking to shoot the breeze with his roommate, but as usual, Pete is on his way out. Peter later visits the Stacy home and meets with Gwen, who asks Peter to share his secret with her because his disappearances have gone on far too long. Peter promises he'll tell her soon, but not yet. Before going out on a date, they are interrupted by George Stacy and Joe Robertson, who has been talking about Spider-Man. George asks Peter to come back sometime soon and discuss what he knows about Spider-Man, having taken so many pictures of the wall crawler.
The next morning, when Peter hears reports of a giant lizard on the radio, he goes out on the prowl as Spider-Man in hopes of capturing the Lizard before anyone else does. Sure enough, Spider-Man finds the Lizard. However, he is so determined to not to hurt his friend, Curt Conners, that the Lizard manages to overpower the wall-crawler and beat him close to submission. As the Lizard dangles Spider-Man over the edge of a building, the Human Torch arrives just in time to "save" Spider-Man, and ruin his plan to lure the Lizard down the side of the building. What to expect:
🖤Rockstar
🖤Sweet Romance
🖤Forced proximity
🖤Christmas
🖤Enemies to lovers
🖤Two lost souls
🖤Unwilling partnership
A girl with a broken heart. A guy with a broken family. And a Christmas dream that will bring them together.
Olivia Johns has tried the real world and failed. She had the record contract… and a boyfriend who stole that contract, along with her music.
Now she's heading home for Christmas, escaping the real world and trying to get her feet under her.
______
Connor Wheating knows a thing or two about having his feet knocked out from under him. He was on the verge of getting signed to his first record contract when his dad was diagnosed with cancer.
Now he finds himself home for the holidays… and missing the future he was polishing for himself.
But Christmas doesn't only bring snow and holly. In Arberry, North Carolina, it also brings the Annual Music Festival. The competition: fierce. The reward: a shiny new record contract with one of the biggest labels in the industry.
When Olivia and Connor find themselves in an unwilling partnership, working together—and against each other—for the same prize, the chemistry between them growing by the minute…
Christmas wishes might actually come true.
Two lost souls looking for a way out. A Christmas music contest. And an unwilling partnership that leaves them both longing for something more.
Christmas Music is a sweet small-town Christmas novella that features cowboys, hopeless romance, and a heroine willing to make the ultimate sacrifice, and is the prequel to the Southern Heroes series.
