Urban Fantasy Worldbuilding Asks

18. What are the origins of your supernatural creatures and/or the magic your characters use?

well it’s rather fluid because really, any supernatural creature could, theoretically exist in this lore, and i leave it for the interpretation of other blogs. in terms of jamie, though? jamie’s lore comes from that of mythos of the fair folk, primarily focused in irish legend. jamie is a faerie ( or half faerie ) of irish descent. specifically jamie is descended from the aos sí or tuatha de dannan ( there’s some uncertainty if they’re the same thing, separate, or if the aos sí are descended from the tuatha de dannan ). his lore is inspired by traditional mythos, but has been altered upon with headcanon and fiction.

in terms of plain magic ( not including non-fey shapechanging, like werewolves etc. ) there are two main sources: the self, and the natural world. being fey, jamie is magic, on some level, intrinsically linked to the natural world, and that’s where they get most of their energy. how powerful you are is dependent on how early in the season you were born ( as well as which type. a redcap won’t be as powerful as an aos sí, for example ), and when you are your strongest or weakest depends on which season you’re born. a summer fey will be weakest in the winter and strongest in the summer. a spring fey will be strongest in spring and weakest in autumn. 

( jamie is an equinox fae, which means that his case is a bit.... special but )

the other source is that of the self, which is an unsustainable source of magic and not one you would likely want to use. it’s powering something through your own life force. so in terms of jamie’s case... jamie’s body is physical, because they’re half human. but they also have a wellspring of magical energy and light that they can draw from, because they’re half fey. the more they feed that font, the more they charge it, the more they can use it. however, when that well runs dry, were jamie to use magic, it would instead draw from jamie’s physical body. this is something that leaves them weak, and sick. it’s pushing your body past what it should be, and facing physical repercussions as a result, even leading to permanent damage. 

here’s an important thing though, and what makes jamie different from other equinox fey. without delving too deep, an equinox fey has a larger font of magic than other fey, but also draws too deeply from that font. everything they do is over-charged. the fey are magic. their bodies are made of magic and light (or shadow). if an equinox fey (or any fey, but its more common for the equinox children to not know their limits) were to draw too deeply from their source, it would kill them. if you use up all your magic, but you are magic, then there’s nothing left for you. equinox fey don’t have very long lives and don’t often make it past childhood or their teens (though it is possible). because jamie has a physical body to draw upon, because they are flesh and blood as well as magic and light, when they use up all their magic, there is still something left over. jamie would not still be alive if he were a full-blooded fey. 

20. Do the magic users and/or supernatural/fantastical beings in your novel maintain a human-like social structure (marriage, children, holding down a job), or are they lone wolves?

it varies on the individual. the social hierarchy of the fey can be broken down in many ways, but the first division is whether you’re a court fey or a solitary fey. court fey are part of another hierarchy ( and that has several different levels, many of which overlap ) but they’re the ones that usually stay in tir-na-nog, the ones that live amongst the other fey isolated from humans. there is definitely a social structure. a caste system, even, though... jobs are a bit of... well it depends i suppose. i can’t imagine there’s a faerie starbucks, but there are knights and weavers and bards and the like. 

on the other side of the coin is the solitary fey, and at that point it’s entirely individual. some solitary fey stay completely isolated and unbound in the verdant forests of the feywilds. others however may live amongst the humans. jamie, their sister eve, their roommate ash, and @fuckingvictus‘s brock would fall under this category. whatever occupation they have isn’t likely to be one that has strict rules and regulations, and their adherence to law is.... variable, but... well...

27. How integrated into the mundane world are the fantasy elements of your novel?  Do your werewolves work 9-5 office jobs or do they live in a pack in Yosemite?  Are your wizards more likely to graduate from Midvale High or Hogwarts?

see above. keeping in mind i’m only speaking to fey here ( and individual lore of those i interact with regularly ) but generally speaking, solitary fey are likely to keep themselves hidden from view, living Perfectly Ordinary Lives Thank You Very Much. However those that belong to the Courts or those that are Solitary but stay in Tir-Na-Nog are, well, unintegrated. 

A fun side note? iron will hurt most (if not all) fey, and leave a burn if they’re touched with it. However, their sensitivity to steel ( a compound that’s 98-99% iron ) can be variable. Jamie is hypersensitive to steel. It doesn’t burn them unless it gets into their body ( after a particularly bad reaction around 3 years old to a steel needle, there is a very exclusive list of people allowed to pierce or inject jamie with anything. ) it’s recorded on his charts that they are not use steel for his needles, and usually the ones that look after jamie are supernatural themselves. plastic cannula needles are most commonly used as an alternative, as copper-coated, gold and silver fell out of use  in the 19th century and early 20th century.  generally, though, jamie’s reaction to steel is more... insidious. if jamie were a balloon, and the air inside was the source of magic, then the constant presence of steel in the modern world is like a small hole in the balloon. not enough that immediately saps his energy, but is instead a slow leak. one that means that, no matter how much you may try and fill the balloon, it can never stay at its full strength. living in the city instead of in a more natural environment weakens them greatly, and was a large contribution to jamie’s constant weakness in their childhood. at this point, however, jamie was grown an almost tolerance to it. as if the steel is a poison and jamie’s been mithradating ( process of administering non-lethal doses of poison to develop an immunity or tolerance ) against it his entire life. were you to take a fey with the same level of sensitivity and drop them into jamie’s environment with no warning, they would most likely need immediate medical intervention due to the toxicity. this is why jamie’s health was so poor in early childhood ( lived in faerie until 2 ) but has slowly started to improve over the course of their life ( though never truly healthy )

I am VERY excited about your Reverse Inferno but I wanted to talk more about my Fugitive Theory for a moment since I've never told anyone outside my partner hahaha. Essentially, the way I saw it, the Fugitive!Doctor as well as everyone from her universe had merged with ours (including her Master, the Dhawan!Master) because of what Tim Shaw had done in Battle of Ranskooravkolos (or however the hell you spell it) with all the planets. In my head, this all would culminate in a series finale where the Doctor would realize that her "do first, think later" attitude is causing more harm than good (a lesson taught both in how dire the situation is but also from another Doctor going "you're being so reckless!")

This also would've explained how the Fugitive!Doctor's TARDIS looks like a police box even though (in Chibnall's actual explanation) it doesn't make total sense as to how her TARDIS looks the way it does yet.

Yo i like this theory better than the in-show explanation tbh. I didn't like the timeless child arc at all (sorry to those who do! It's just not my thing) and this would fix that so easily. They even couldve kept flux mostly the same and just instead of the doctor trying to learn about past lives or anything she's instead learning about alterrnate lives in other universes, and realizing that her choices led to her being good or being bad and reaffirming that she needs to continue to make good choices or the ripples could be catastrophic and create alternate realities (like the universe where ruth!Doctor and dhawan!master live)

He knew that becoming Chloe's stepdad would be a challenge, especially considering Chloe's age and how much she had loved her father, but David still wanted to give it a try. He had married Joyce, it was only fair that he attempt to get along with her daughter, right?

So, if trying to make her obey by screaming at her, by trying to punish her, by being mean to her did not work, David would resort to alterrnate methods.

Waiting for Joyce to have a workday while he and Chloe would be at home was simple enough. So he only needed to proceed with his plan.

Step 1: Go through Chloe's room thoroughly, find all the drugs, joins and 'herbs' possible (dear God, the nulber of hiding spots that were in a single bedroom alone... It'd taken him almost an entire morning).

Step 2: Wait for Chloe to inevitably come to him, fuming about having her room ransacked and searched (ten minutes after she came back from 'somewhere') and her stash missing.

Step 3: Make it clear that David is opene at the idea of giving some of it back, rationned.

Step 4: Wait for Chloe's tantrum at the announcement ("I'm just gonna buy it again elsewhere", "you can't do this to me", "how dare you steal my stuff" and so on) to end.

Step 5: Begin the long haggling process.

Steo 6: Ask that Chloe suck his cock in exchange for keeping it all a secret from the cops.

Step 7: Insist that he's serious.

Step 8: Let Chloe suck his cock and become addicted to it (thanks to taking some of these 'herbs' and rubbing his cock with them. His dick would itch for a few hours, but it'd be worth it)
