Hello petty here's something I wanna ask, which is the best barrier scene that u cannot forget about or want everyone to remember the beauty of that scene.Here are the hearts to show my love.💜💛

Oh my goodness! This is so difficult to answer because I love all barriers! I'm a sucker for good visual rhetoric, but if I'm having to pick, some of my favorite barriers mean more than just conflict between two characters.

Like I need a barrier to hurt me! I need it to be another character! I need it to bring me pain!

And I need it to matter when a character crosses the line.

(Oh and don't even get me started on when a person is the barrier!)

For example, Parasite does an excellent job with lines and levels and crossing them, but I was in awe of how class was represented in the film through the windows. The rich people get these huge clear windows so they can see everything because their wealth grants them freedom and seclusion.

While the poor folks have a smaller dirty window cut into portions with bars on it because their poverty imprisons them and exposes them. They don't get to see the full picture. Their world is fragmented.

So when I saw Li Ming imprisoned not only by his poverty but by his sexuality in Moonlight Chicken, my whole heart went out to this tiny fictional character.

Or when Zo had a barrier between him and heterosexuality as he struggled to accept Joke's love in Hidden Agenda, I was also distraught.

But barriers are a specialty of Director Tee who is behind Hidden Agenda, Jack and Joker, Knock Out, I Feel You Linger in the Air, I Saw You in My Dream, Step by Step, and many other Thai QLs.

So in I Feel You Linger in the Air and I Saw You in My Dream, the barrier represented how one of the characters was fading and possibly leaving/dying.

PAIN!

While in Knock Out, the barrier was there to not only show the issues between the two characters.

But the fact that they could overcome them, together with love.

But it's just not Thai dramas that do such a great job at using barriers to reinforce the narrative like The Boy Next World when the barrier immediately came up the second Cir no longer recognized Phu.

South Korean dramas excel at this, and the barriers used in Our Dating Sim showed that Shin Ki Tae was respecting Lee Wan's boundaries even though he could've easily gone around them.

And Japan always knows what it's doing with a barrier like when it made the barrier glass in When It Rains, It Pours to show that Sei was splitting himself in two and imprisoning himself while Kazuaki wanted to be free.

But Taiwan always pushes the barrier a step further for me (pun intended, you'll see).

Like in W Series: Love Yourself, the barrier showed a clear shiny world behind the main (dead) character, but he was on the side that was tarnished and ruined.

Because for Taiwanese dramas, the barrier is never just one thing. It's good versus bad; it's freedom versus imprisonment; it's the desire to be let in versus the need to keep others out; it's everything like it was in We Best Love.

Which is why if I had to pick just one barrier, it would be the red line of fate in Unknown.

The red line won one of my annual Colors Awards because it was an evolution that began when Qian decided to cross the red barrier and feed Yuan who was withering away in the darkness.

That red line was was symbolic of their destiny but it also was a major barrier that boxed them in because Qian could only see them as brothers. He couldn't ascend beyond their past. He couldn't move forward nor up. He was stuck.

That red line is what tied them together yet constantly separated them, and we were visually reminded of that all the time.

And it wasn't until Qian accepted their fate that the red shifted from a barrier into a shield.

Because as the great Maya Angelou said, "Love recognizes no barriers."

Even after all this time I’m confused on the difference between Ozma and Ozpin. Can you clarify that bc you say there’s a difference but what is it exactly? It’s is psychological (DID, dissociation, denial, constructed identity, persona) or not?

unrelated.. do you think Ozma and Salem are going to be forgiven by the heroes or do they have to deal with everyone hating them for all time? Like Ozma was the architect in the fucked up world that is remnant and salem is obvious. Ruby is pretty kind and compassionate but I’m a not sure of the rest.

i mean. i don't think the distinction is particularly opaque in the text itself; as ozma himself puts it:

OZPIN: I'm… cursed. For thousands of years, I've walked the surface of Remnant, living, dying, and reincarnating in the body of a like-minded soul. The Professor Ozpin you all met was not my first form, and clearly wasn't my last. It's... an extraordinarily strenuous process on everyone involved.

JAUNE: So who… what are you?

OZPIN: I am the combination of countless men who've spent their lives trying to protect the people of Remnant. With every rebirth, my soul is eventually merged with another and I am changed, but my memories stay with me.

in his initial explanation, oz lays out that he's cursed with a form of immortality that entails reincarnating into the body of a like-minded soul, and makes a very clear distinction between himself and his hosts, including ozpin, whom he describes here as a temporary form he adopted, neither his first nor his last. ozpin, then, is the identity of the like-minded soul which ozma inhabited until he died and left ozpin behind.

then jaune begins to ask who oz really is, but catches himself and amends the question to WHAT are you, which oz answers by erasing the line he just drew and describing himself as merely an amalgamation of countless men. he backs off of describing himself as an individual separate from his hosts in response to jaune signaling disinterest in ozma's real identity. there may be a kernel of truth here in that ozma's sense of self has been so broken down by this ordeal that he feels like a stranger to himself, but he's also deliberately obfuscating. 

and part of that is because ozma is the man who loves salem enough to damn the world for her and ozpin is, like every other like-minded soul who came before, her sworn enemy and dedicated to the protection of remnant above all (*defined here as obedience to light's mandate). ozpin is the mold to which light's curse forces ozma to conform. 

to what extent ozma is conscious of being trapped in these molds is an open question--i think ozpin's behavior in v1-3 and especially unspoken things like the design of beacon tower and the fairytale anthology suggest some degree of self-awareness, even if repressed. 

it's not like. complicated. the curse forces him to assume the identities of his hosts and suppress the parts of who he is that light disapproves (namely, loving salem). ozpin is the assumed identity, ozma the true self.

with regard to forgiveness: idk why ruby is the one of the main four you think of as being the most compassionate and likeliest to forgive (that would be. blake. forgiveness and compassion are a central theme in her character arc whereas ruby is kind but until her experience in the tree tended toward very black-and-white thinking. ruby's the one who would've cut emerald down without blinking if oscar hadn't stopped her. blake is the one who tried to get through to ilia after ilia sold her out to adam and while ilia actively participated in the attack on blake's family because blake knew ilia didn't feel good about these choices.) but the narrative is telegraphing forgiveness loud and clear lmao. like. ozma has already been forgiven. ruby (after her time in the tree gave her new perspective) forgave neo and the rest of her friends followed her lead. this is not a story that ends with ozma or salem Ostracized Forever lmao

The Specter of Augustus: The First Roman "Emperor" and his Immediate Legacy

What does it mean to call Augustus a specter? As the foundational figure responsible for the creation of the principate and the imperial period that followed, Augustus is inseparable from the Roman empire at every moment and in all its manifestations. The figure of the princeps, moreover, and eventually the emperor, is in itself a specter since it is defined by its total alterity: separated from society, placed above but also among, a creator and enforcer of laws, subject to those laws and yet above them as the one who enjoys the right of absolute inspection. This absolute inspection remains even after Augustus no longer exists as human being because his presence is so embedded within the fabric of his creation, which makes inevitable constant encounters with his ghost.

This haunting extends to textuality. Augustus reigned contemporaneously with the creation of a literary body that, while not always focused on him specifically, could not avoid being affected by his extensive cultural and social reach. Augustus is an ever-present subtext of the literature produced during his lifetime. The consumption of that literature by the generations that followed in turn became subject to those very subtexts.

Logically we can imagine the specter of Augustus coming into being the moment he breathed his last. Augustus was the first of his kind and thus established a precedent with every decision he made including traditions that stretched back to time immemorial or were developed by others before the first princeps; Augustus put his stamp on every facet of Roman life whether or not its origin lay with him. Augustus welcomed apparitions, iterations, traces of the past through which he could claim authority. But we must not forget the role he played in creating ghosts. The ultimate success of Augustus was a long process of surviving the fluctuating geopolitical chaos that existed during the end of the first century BCE. As the sole survivor of a terrible civil war in which he took part – himself engaging in horrendous acts of violence – Augustus began a propaganda blitz that redefined his self-image, rewrote the origins of Rome, and firmly established his place of power within this new existence.

This was a multi-decade process that continued throughout Augustus’ reign, and while effort was put into including successors among this discourse – and this was hampered by the fact that they kept prematurely dying – it paled in comparison to the work done elevating Augustus himself. The rhetorical recollection of Augustus’ success depicted him as inevitable, that somehow his rise was by nature through an inborn greatness of character. An ideology was thus created that glossed over a messy historical reality and in the process tried to reorient past missteps as simply individual rungs on a ladder of fate that led ever upwards toward revered greatness. I think if he did truly feel repulsed it could bring up very interesting points of conflict within himself ad youre also right to point out its moreso a Hirano thing separate from Kagiura himself that happens to involve him due to it being how Hirano inevitably tackles his numerous feelings that he has to figure out

I think what steers me away from that though is how repulsed was likely not what he meant? I 1000% agree that just because a word (or action for the sake of the argument) might put people off doesnt mean it shouldn't be acknowledged (trust me this is what ive been trying to express since ch. 20) I just dont think the word works in context. I dont really get the impression of repulsion from his reaction nor his character as its been shown to us because I have always believed a big part of how Hirano is unsure of certain things IS the aspect of vulnerability, unfamiliarity, and his relationship with his masculinity and a few other things. I also dont think him feeling "repulsed" would be necessary for him to confront a feeling of discomfort or something "off" when someone who loves touches him in a way that they desire to express their love with. Especially since Kagiura's whole "like lovers" thing is something that could be giving hirano the wrong idea because theyre both inexperienced in this field and I think Kagiura's idea of what lovers do is veryyy juvenile (and heteronormative but I can get into that another time).

For me, the connotation of repulsed doesn't make sense when it was merely location of the touch rather than the hug itself (which. Lets be real. That was an awkward ass hug anyway so like. Lmfao). Not to mention the numerous translations I've seen/been told about just dont use that word. The translator that used repulsed initially didnt describe it as such when talking about the chapter and actually made a point to say it didnt even mean it was inherently "unpleasant" or disliked but that he reacted reflexively. Repulsed technically isnt WRONG but i think its important to choose what works best considering diction and characterization and it DOES affect how the character is seen regardless and can have those unintended consequences. Like, Hirano wondering why he reacted the way he did isnt necessarily new, and someone pointed out too that we've been seeing stuff about his lower back since ~ ch. 23 with aching and stretching and how that could be a factor in it being a sensitive and therefore he has a reflexive reaction to being touched there when no one ever has. Of course, he could also just dislike it, which would be fine. I just dont like the use of repulsed for reasons listed above, and because I have no reason to think thats what he felt.

I try not to take what other people think to heart, but because this series means as much as it does to me, i unfortunately do. So the use of repulsed considering everything that has happened so far was like. Being shot in the foot and then someone poking my eye. I cant necessarily IGNORE how people perceive whats being shown and translated and i dont think it should be. Like, id be more inclined to care less about repulsed if it wasnt for the way it'd be interpreted and I know I cant BLAME those people for that interpretation. I truly don't think Hirano has ever been repulsed by Kagiura's touch and its important that it's Kagiura's touch specifically to explain why he wasnt versus if he could have been, idk if that makes sense. It just feels stronger than it was ever described as being otherwise.

Regardless, it is all interpretation and this was my two cents. I again do rlly like this viewpoint on it though, it makes for a very interesting read and adds another layer on what Hirano is willing to do and think over for Kagiura

Man can I ever.

Firstly, I'm gonna give some people the benefit of the doubt in saying that there were honest and lovely hrkg fans who were put off by chapter 28 due to the thought that, oh no, Hirano really is very uncomfortable with close physical contact, and Kagiura hugged him twice and pushed that boundary, and we know he values physical contact, how can they be in a relationship if this is the case blah blah blah. But it is unfortunately also very reductive to take that from chapter 20, or 28, and onward. And of course, there are the people who aren't reading it in good faith at all, but why they reacted the way they did is self-explanatory: they think Hirano is uncomfortable overall with Kagiura, that he's been being pushed and pulled unwillingly, that Kagiura is, for lack of better word, abusive, etc.

Now, my biggest issue with both of these scenarios boils down to the same thing, which is the lack of understanding context and subtext, or just generally not being understanding of the characters individually, their motivations, their biases, what leads them to think what, and then taking what they say or do at face value. Sensei has written her characters to say things that make no sense all the time, or that is obviously not how they truly feel, etc, so it baffles me when people pretend this isn't the case when it comes to hirakagi, i truly don't get it. I can name very few, if any, pieces of media where the author didn't deliberately show us things or imply things that weren't explicitly said. While the fandom can be wrong about their interpretations of these implications, I think it's important to at least think about what they could be regardless.

And what kills me is that, I can guarantee a good chunk of the people entirely put off from hirakagi from the past, what, two chapters, are people who do not care. These are people that read the dialogues and the monologues and look at what they're doing and don't think any deeper than that, or if they do, it's not to look into the characters at all, they skip over that and head straight for societal context, which would be fine if they, you know, put the character first??? And they also decide to put this character into said societal context dictated by how they view who they are, their identity, their inclinations, and they use their surface level interpretations to confirm or deny what they already decided to think.

This is why when people read that Hirano was "repulsed" by the hug, they take it to be so freaking literal. For some, this proves their Hirano ace hcs as they related to him. For others, it proves Hirano doesn't or "can't" love Kagiura back in the same way. And then the ones who scream "WAHHH KAGIURA DID SOMETHING HIRANO WAS UNCOMFY WITH WAHHH". I have never in my life seen people act so morally superior over a hug. GENUINELY. The word used being "repulsed" was like the water in the desert for people that needed something to confirm what they already think about hrkg, or hirano or kagiura individually, conclusions they came to by not giving a fuck about their actual characters. Characterization. Subtext. What is implied. etc.

Everyone in the world is biased to some degree about many things, so it's not like I'm saying you have to read without that. You just have to be deliberate enough to recognize it and look a little deeper, listen to other perspectives, and, you know, read and comprehend the story. Sensei's characters are all very complex, imo, even side characters. None of them are "simple", all are pretty damn dimensional and well-rounded, so to read 28 and come out of it with the world repulsed in your hands says more about you than anything else, honestly. I thought the same thing about 30; reading chapter 30 and coming out of it with just complaints about the kiss is just as annoying. It's how I know the people that yell the most about the unhealthy, one-sided, terrible dynamic between hrkg don't care to read anything beyond the things they can point to and go "See! There!"

Facts: Hirano is an unreliable narrator. I know, SHOCKING right. Like, Hirano, the guy that has BEEEN saying he wants to be with Kagiura more than anything (in more ways than one), saying his feelings for Kagiura aren't enough, or love. Saying he doesn't feel his heart race when touched so "I can't love him, duh." Nevermind the fact that he is so comfortable with Kagiura that he is willing to try things out just for his sake, even though he would straight up say no if he didn't want to, or if it were anyone else. Nevermind the fact that physical contact has always been normal between them, hence why it feels normal. Nevermind that fact that despite this, he feels happy to be close with Kagiura, he loses track of time, he extends the time they get to touch, but much of his gripes don't come from how he feels personally about the physical touch, it's what Kagiura is doing/showing him...

Facts: Kagiura is constantly contradicting himself. He has this hangup about how physical touching should be with someone you love, possibly brought about by heteronormativity and the standard he has set due to others (past relationship) and his parents (what he wants out of a marriage). It has to be like this and that and this and that. Except everyone had been clocking how weird he was with Hirano since... forever. Wow Hirano is really close to his roommate and gets defensive of him in the LIGHT NOVEL. Kagiura misses Hirano and thinks the dorm is empty without him in the LIGHT NOVEL. Hirano's memories of receiving those damn earrings is all bright and sparkly and beautiful in the LIGHT NOVEL. They have been loving on each other for a long ass time, and they have been touching normally, though more closely than they do with anyone else. Kagiura has clung to him and grabbed his wrist and his shirt and all that shit. So the only difference is that Kagiura is just overwhelmed by his own feelings and desires that he thinks, at this point, "I can't touch Hirano in any other way" because he thinks he'll be pushing a boundary (oh whats this? Kagiura is very aware of boundaries? DUMBASS OF COURSE HE IS).

"I feel one way that Hirano doesn't feel. If I touch him, someone that loves him and feels a certain kind of desire for him, he will be uncomfortable because he doesn't feel that way about me. So my solution is to start limiting how I touch him in a controlled environment with an agreement, in which he understands that the connotation is meant to be romantic, he'll understand how I feel without me being too much or overwhelming him!" Kagiura Akira, you are 16 fucking years old thinking that you can't touch your, forget crush, BEST FRIEND in a normal way because you think your feelings are too much. That's not normal man. And what makes it worse is that by limiting himself, Hirano doesn't fully understand how Kagiura's desire functions ("If me touching you makes you happy, look happy when I do it.")

For a little analogy, let's say you have a friend that makes you your favorite food when you're hungry. And not just hungry, but you're incredibly hungry, ravenous even. They make you your fav food and put it in front of you and is like "Dig in!" and you going "nah I'm good" and just stare at it. Then the friend that made it for you is confused because they know it's your favorite, they're letting you eat it, but you just won't. And one day they make it again for you and then you go, "How about I eat it in little bites" and they go yeah sure, so you take tiny bits off it. And they're confused again because it looks like you don't want it even if you keep saying you do. Now, similarly, if you did immediately eat it, you didn't have to go all in; you could've taken your time. You could've took a break for a drink, coulda had a conversation over the meal. But since you deprived yourself on purpose, time and time again, now you are literally starving and one day, you might take too big a piece, too big a bite, out of nowhere, out of desperation. It's like that.

Lowkey this analogy sucks but the point is that Kagiura deprived himself of even touching Hirano regularly in a normal way, and is forcing himself to only do it "like lovers" for ten seconds a day. Not only is it painful for him because he feelings are so full with no outlet, because he's holding himself back, Hirano sees him about to burst and sees this pain and is like wtf. I thought you liked this. For a while he was afraid Kagiura was forcing himself to do it, like he didn't actually like doing it because Kagiura is making himself go hungry on purpose, making himself take tiny bites on purpose like it hurts and it does, and then of course, one day, the flood gates will open. His hunger will get the best of him. And I can't believe that, after all this time, after thousands of years of literature, we got to a point where the overflow of his feelings leading to a hug pissed people off. People's reactions to chapter 20 actually killed me. I understand if you don't like hugs/they make you uncomfortable, I too am not big on hugs unless I'm close to the person. BUT, in the context of this story, you cannot sit here and tell me that was some cardinal sin committed by a guy i love with his best friend. Like, really. A hug? And then of course, 28, when he asks for it, and his hand got a little low and Hirano flinched, again, mfs go WAHHH OH MY GOD HE TOUCHED HIM WHERE HE WAS UNCOMFORTABLE WAHHH he didn't even do it on purpose. And of course, we arrive at the "repulsed" descriptor. Again, diction matters. Even if repulsed isn't an inaccurate translation, it indeed changes how people interpret the scene. Repulsed sounds and feels worse than discomfort or even dislike. "I am repulsed by strawberries" isn't the same connotation as "I dislike strawberries" or "strawberries make me uncomfortable".

Not to mention Kagiura quickly changed how he was hugging him because he recognized Hirano flinched. Not to mention Hirano did sink into the hug. Not to mention that I think there are many reasons Hirano reacted the way he did that wasn't "Hirano doesn't and will never like to be touched/hugged". I think it's somewhat to do with a vulnerability thing, and also a "No one has ever touched my lower back so it surprised me" thing (because the translator initially described his discomfort as something not necessarily "negative" idk how true that is though). Hirano was fine initiating touching because of control, but also because I think there's a certain level of vulnerability he is not used to. Being in someone's arms is one of them. And it was an awkward ass hug too like it wasn't even normal. Again with Kagiura and his weird "lovers do this like this" where do you get these ideas from man. Like I know your parents never hug each other like this. Or maybe they do idk. Anyway.

And then of course, people haven't let that go. Chaper 29 people were acting like Hirano had that whole convo with Ichinose and Kagiura after for no reason. Suddenly the sky imagery and "that's not the only way to express your love for someone" and "I want to be with you more than anyone else in the world, that's what love means to me" don't mean shit. Acting like Hirano hasn't been feeling that all this time. Acting like hirano hasn't been feeling his heart beat faster without any prompting from Kagiura because his heart is realizing Kagiura is expressing love for just being with him, around him, being cherished by yours truly. None of that means anything for some reason because last chapter Kagiura hugged him and Hirano felt off for a split second. Okay.

Now it's chapter 30 and there were like 40 pages prior to the last three in which we are seeing Hirano and Kagiura be in love, be youthful, be true to each other, we see just how much Kagiura pays attention to Hirano and how he is, how much he treasures that about him, how much he looks up to him and recognizes his hard work, and then we see Hirano be an unreliable narrator, downplaying his own feelings because he doesn't want to hurt Kagiura by giving him "expectations", not giving his feelings any credit at all because he, like Kagiura, doesn't want to hurt the person he loves. Kagiura gets overwhelmed by the hunger and kisses him WAHHH CALL THE FUCKING FBI HE'S A SEX OFFENDER holy shit yall. Is this your first BL? No no, is this your first story? Ever? Have you ever read words on a page? Are you three years old?? Like you cannot be fucking real. Do I even have to say anything else??

So yeah. Repulsed did a number on people's psyche. I think I went off on a tangent in the middle of that butttt you get the picture.

I often think about how Mutiny has that callback to Luck Runs Out and how it, as the last Eurylochus song, contrasts to his first.

Right now, something I’m currently thinking about is that line Odysseus has— please don’t do this, I need to get home.

In LRO, there’s a moment where the music changes during Odysseus’ verse when he’s parroting Polites’ philosophy and it’s meant to represent the way that Odysseus was reaching out to Eurylochus, not as a captain but as a friend. There’s a similar moment that Eurylochus has when he calls Odysseus Ody instead of captain. It’s a moment that strips away the sociopolitical factors that dictate a lot of their relationship and it’s personally my favorite in the entire show.

Odysseus follows that by, once again, calling out to his friend, rather than his right hand. What’s interesting, though, is that Odysseus says that he needs to get home, and then follows it by saying “reconsider— we can get home”.

This happens while Eurylochus is doing the same thing— starting by asking how much longer he must suffer, and then ending with the crew speaking with him and asking how much longer they must suffer. What I find particularly notable about this is the fact that Eurylochus, as the voice of the crew, is implied to be the one voicing their thoughts regardless of if they’re actually backing him. It’s implied in Keep Your Friends Close that Eurylochus wasn’t just voicing his concerns in LRO, he was voicing the concerns of everyone (which is part of the reason it was such a public confrontation). In Mutiny, the same thing occurs in the first half of the song, where Eurylochus confronts Odysseus and then we learn that the crew agrees and shares that sentiment right after.

In the second half of Mutiny, however, that isn’t the case. This moment is the only one in the entire show where Eurylochus is truly being selfish. Arguments could be made about him urging Odysseus to run from the cyclops or him choosing to tell Odysseus about the windbag before Scylla, but I would then argue that those moments are him acting for Odysseus’ sake as well. With the cow, in this verse, he is only acting for himself. He is only responding as himself— Eurylochus is not the voice of anyone else, he is only Eurylochus. He has isolated himself, for just a moment, from the rest of the crew. Most of the show is Odysseus acting for himself and, in this moment, Eurylochus is doing the same thing.

one of the weirdest experiences i ever had was flipping through dimidue fic early on and realizing " ... oh some of you guys are here for the power dynamic? like straight-up? you're getting off to the appearance of their relationship? and not the complex interwoven navigation of the personal, interpersonal, and political in an attempt to honestly connect and express selfhood? not the balance of truth, half-truth, and façade? not the struggle to truly express, receive, and understand love, despite the power dynamics at play and the political realities of the situation?"

Right, which is why people are all “he broke the 4th wall”. We know full well that the metaphor is exactly that. But the songwriting has always used the Sleep/Vessel story to explore whatever that man is actually feeling / has felt.

So yeah, actually, him acknowledging real life, mentioning fans directly, talking about being on a stage, talking from his point of view, and not the characters is taking a moment away from the lore. Because there’s no way to look at this song as a continuation of story of Sleep and Vessel.

seeing people say that vessel took a moment away from the lore to give us Caramel, or that 'this isn't vessel speaking, we're hearing the man behind the mask', is making me just a tiny bit annoyed, but I know these comments are all in positivity so it's fine. it's just that, this is what it's always been. there is no lore, not really. it's open to interpretation so I love engaging with the lore and the theories but if we're being real, it's always been a thinly veiled metaphor for himself and his struggles. I think it's just a somewhat strange thing to see vessel as a separate persona from the man himself rather than a way to be himself more authentically

Re:Kinder Fun Facts of the day☺️!!! Have you ever wondered who talks the most from the main cast in Re:Kinder?? Well, I did😊. Today I'll be answering this question with some graphs and as a bonus telling you what words each character uses the most! I will warn you, this will be a bit long and I don't know how to be less verbose so, yeah!!!

First, I've made some basic rules as to what I counted regarding how much the characters speak. Not all lines really count as speaking, after all.

Any of the incoherent screaming lines don't count. There's a lot of screaming since the characters die a lot (as expected for a horror RPG game), but I don't really count that as speaking unless they're saying proper words. In that same vein, I didn't really count any of the panting or sniffing and such that are conveyed through words. Again, I don't really see that as a character actively speaking their thoughts!

If I cannot tell who a line belongs to, I will not give it to anyone. This happens for certain lines, so I felt this rule was important.

I won't be counting repetitions of the same line if it's on a variation of the same scene. This may sound a bit strange, but when a character dies, the game goes on to the same next scene it would regardless (unless the scene that follows it is an ending), with variations and new lines here and there to account for the dead character, but a lot will be reused and placed in the exact same beats it normally would have been in originally. So, this rule is here for that. Oh, and also the scenes with bits of Yuuichi's backstory that appear in Shunsuke's head won't be counted twice, because some appear twice line by line.

Of course, the "..." lines won't count. I am so sorry Aya!!!!😞

Now that the ground rules have been set, there's just one thing I want to mention. Though I will count all the total lines for Takumi and Yuuichi like any other character, I just want to mention that first I will have two separate counts for them! Takumi | Takumiel and Yuuichi | Yuuichi's Heart respectively.

Takumiel is separate because I was curious about how much Takumi spoke as an archangel compared to when he was alive. Yuuichi's Heart is because he speaks so much he feels notable enough to be given his own division, even if he and Yuuichi at the end of the day are one person

(I count the silly mind telepathy where Shunsuke is being directly spoken to [and being told things normal Yuu would avoid saying at that point] and the comical theater as Yuuichi's Heart. I clarify in case one assumes he only starts being counted the moment he's directly labelled as Yuuichi's Heart. Any line that can't be distinguished between Yuuichi's Heart and Yuuichi will be given to Yuuichi by default.)

You may be thinking— woah, does Shunsuke really speak that much?! You could say that, for a good chunk of those lines are from how he describes interactable points around the map and his inner thoughts, so they aren't all exactly said out loud. The benefit of being the protagonist, I suppose ww

Funny enough, Yuuichi's Heart has almost as many lines as Yuuichi does for not having that much time in the game, being on the higher end between the characters that don't get the benefit of being a protagonist (lol)!

Admittedly I had expected for Rei and Hiroto to have a more similar amount of lines given their nearly equal amount of presence, but for what it is Rei surpassed Hiroto by 51 lines! I also had expected for Takumiel to speak a little bit more than Takumi but turns out the opposite is true.

While the lack of lines of Takumi and Takumiel are to be expected due to their short time on the game, what stands out is Aya not even reaching triple digits between her other peers who are in there for most of the game. This is because a good chunk of Aya's lines in game are silence!^^" And thus weren't counted. If ellipses were a word, she surely would have reached triple digits, but unfortunately they're not.

Now the line count with combined sums of Takumi | Takumiel and Yuuichi | Yuuichi's Heart!!!

In here, the ranking isn't affected, with Yuuichi remaining second place and Takumi being last place. But the disparity of everyone's numbers compared to Takumi's feels a bit more clear to see when Takumiel isn't individually counted.

With Yuuichi's line counts combined, Shunsuke remains 318 lines ahead of him, but it also means Yuuichi has a 59% the amount of Shunsuke's lines; and impressive feat for someone who doesn't get the benefit of being the point of view for everything you press... Although he does also have an upper hand over everyone by essentially being the plot of this game ww

But maybe line counts do not suffice to tell how much a character speaks. Yes, Shunsuke has a bunch of lines from everything he interacts with, but is it really reliable to say he speaks all that much in all those lines? A good chunk of those could easily have 3 words each! So with this in mind, let's do a word count.

Even in a word count, Shunsuke has the lead, having a lead of 2,247 words over second place. But we'll see about that when we combine Yuuichi's numbers. Anyway, here's the ranking!

This time, Yuuichi's Heart is the one at second place!!! It's pretty funny that he speaks more than his physical counterpart ww. I genuinely didnt think he'd out yap himself that way when I chose to count for him individually 😭!!! He has a lead of 63 words over himself, but a lead nonetheless.

In here, Rei and Hiroto are more even than in the line counts, with the difference seeming more minimal when put into words. But it also showcases that despite Rei having more lines than Yuuichi's Heart in the line count, those only get to have a bit over half of the amount of words he talks (To be fair he does get to infodump a lot in his section of the game).

And here's the combined word count!!! Suddenly Shunsuke's lead is only by a mere 55 words! So Yuuichi speaks about as much as he does with 318 less lines.

I must admit that I genuinely did not expect it to be that close. When I chose to count the lines for when you interact with things for Shunsuke, I thought he was granted to speak an absurd amount more than anyone else. But turns out that Yuuichi speaks about the same amount out loud when most of Shunsuke's are his own thoughts ww. But it does make sense! He is still the plot of this game.

So, after all those charts, here's the average/middle point of lines and words for characters to have, because why not, it's fun.

Average Line Count (YH and Takumiel counted individually): 197 lines

Average Line Count (When combined): 247 lines

Average Word Count (YH and Takumiel counted individually): 1,333 words

When it came to counting these words I did not count stop words, that being common words that are used all the time by everyone in English. "I, you, me, the, to, a, my, your, yes, no"... Words like that! Otherwise everyone would have one of those as their most said word and it'd be rather boring to look at. With that said, here are the words these characters say the most!

Shunsuke: Yuuichi - said 40 times! (this genuinely confused me so much im sorry he uses interjections so much I had expected it to be something like "huh" or "um" but no i dont know how this passed by me as i was rounding up all the lines he says or proofreading or writing all of those lines WHAT?!?! its been two days and it still takes me out)

The funny thing is that despite the many surface-level similarities between Mettaton Undertale and Tenna Deltarune; both being rectangular, charismatic TV Hosts who subject the Player Characters to many TV-Themed Minigames and a ‘score’ based Sparing Mechanic

And they even have a very similar taste is suits!

On a deeper character/thematic level, they’re actually total opposites.

Mettaton is the Underground’s only celebrity and main source of entertainment, he’s highly watched and highly popular (Well, within the standards of the Underground, it's implied they are just not that many Monsters around). Meanwhile Tenna’s whole thing is that he’s been abandoned and ignored by the whole Dreemurr family. Outcompeted and overshadowed by the many other sources of entertainment in the modern Light World.

And while Tenna is motivated by an obsessive desire to not be abandoned ever again, to keep Toriel and the Fun Gang on his shows forever… One of Mettaton’s biggest flaws is his tendency to abandon those he’s close to. He pretty much cut ties with Shyren and Napstablook when he became a star.

And he’s been growing distant from Alphys as well.

And, actually his whole darn motivation is to abandon the Underground in search of even greater fame on the surface.

His Pacifist Ending is all about him confronting that flaw in himself, understanding how important he is to the Monsters of the Underground and deciding that he should stay so he can keep bringing his brand of entertainment, joy and glamour to the people who needs it.

While Tenna’s Happy Ending is about helping him to get over his obsessive neediness to entertain specifically the Dreemurr family, and realizing he can move on to someone else, to someplace else, who will actually watch him.

On a deeper thematic level... I think you can also talk about how Mettaton is driven by his Dreams, while Tenna seeks Hope.

And also, I always saw Mettaton as representing modernity for the Underground.

Due to his human-fanboyism and fascination with the Surface, Mettaton has ended up creating and/or promoting a lot of aspects of modern human culture in the Underground. Mass media entertainment, merchandise, trademarks, fast-food, minimum-wage retail jobs, unions…

All of these things seem to exist in the Underground primarily or entirely due to Mettaton’s influence.

Every other Boss/Main Character has some kind of ‘official position’ in the Kingdom's traditional power-structure; Sentry, Royal Guard Captain, Royal Scientist, King, Queen, Prince… Mettaton is a creation of the Royal Scientist, but on his own he’s just a rich and famous celebrity. That's kind of a modern concept in it and of itself, since it kinda requires the existence of a mass media culture....

Or hell, just the fact that he’s the one Monster in the game who seems to have no real respect/loyalty for the Monarchy, and is actually working against him…

Both out of his individual sense of morality (he cares for the Humans) but also for the sake of the very modern goal of mass fame.

And of course on the most obvious level he’s a technologically-advanced robot whose ‘zone’ is the most tech-themed part in the game. (Zones? if you wanna count Hotland and the CORE as separate areas. Either way it's true of both when compared to the rest of the Underground.)

And Tenna is obviously the exact opposite of this. He and his Dark World are still kinda tech-themed in the sense that he is a Darkner based on a household electronic device, but he’s still clearly supposed to stand as a vast contrast to the much-more advanced techy-themed Darkners of Cyber City. He’s specifically meant to be themed after outdated and old-fashioned technology

And the concept of Nostalgia.

… In a way, despite Undertale being a very 2010’s game and despite the Underground being established to have 2010's technology such as Social Media… Mettaton's being primarily a TV Star with TV Show theming in most of his encounters is a very 20th century sort of concept. To use the Television as a shorthand for the concept of modernity.

Obviously that works within Undertale because that is a very familiar cultural shorthand and also it does make sense within the Very Particular Technological and Cultural Framework of the Underground… But with Deltarune being both a much newer game and taking place in a world much closer to our own, I guess it makes sense to instead use the TV to symbolize the past, outdated technology and nostalgic yearning.

I wanted to make their design stand out, so I created them from scratch; they're not loadouts you can find in-game. Plus a little bit of character description because I'm dying to talk about them and their roles in the story (*wearing a shirt that says "please talk to me about my fic"*).

Now I can finally draw them often!!

Somewhat goofy clothing sheets under the cut↓↓↓

I tried to design them the way their silhouettes and colors stay recognisable, as if they were meant to be used in-game later, to not to break the gameplay rules. I also wanted them to look as tf2-like as possible, I studied the hell out of the 3d models and on the last three I guess it started to turn out decent. Drawing Spy is still pain though.

Or maybe it's just that I'm not attracted to the majority of the mercs visually?? That's why they don't look satisfying?? Lmao. Need to adjust them to my tastes later.

I'm not sure I can exactly explain my design choices with these... How exactly they correlate to their characters. There is something, but I went for it fully intuitively.

For BLU scout I went for the softer, rounder oversized clothing to accent his insecurity and the need to shield himself for comfort. It still needed to shape his torso (game rules) but his hood and sleeves do the deed. There is also a strict rule in how to draw his freckles: they look more like moles and there's 7 or 8 of them. You won't believe me if I say this is lore relevant.

For RED Scout, I went with the more aggressive military style. I think I literally took this jacket design from a real military one. There should be an accent on his heavy relations with the army. His clothes are tight because he still likes himself.

RED Sniper is giving hunter vibes, forest type. BLU Sniper looks more like a fisher or a winter hunter. Not sure what deeper meaning I could assign to this except that BLU Sniper was heavily referenced on Ogata Hyakunosuke.

BLU Spy should radiate tiredness. His look is quite unkept for his standards but at this point it doesn't matter anymore. The turtleneck and the boots are special requests from @/gentlesurgeryenjoyer (xoxo)

BLU Medic just looks so freaking cool in a black shirt. It was a vision. I'm not sure if black and white accents mean anything in terms of which side those characters are on. I also wanted to separate him from another famous horror witnessing Medic.

And Miss Pauling was the most satisfying to draw, it was a gift to draw her last... I gave her pants because it's getting cold outside at the time when the story takes place. I also find it very impractical to go killing job in a pencil skirt, I'm sorry. She probably also wears snickers underneath.

A: Aftercare (What they’re like after sex)

Mr. Silvair has a deep desire to understand humans and everything they have to offer, even if he believes it's from a stance of craving knowledge (really, he wants to be able to express his endearment of you in a manner you can understand). He has a page on kissing and different kinds of kisses, a page on gestures of endearment, another on hugging and cuddling… The fact that humans’ bodies release a hormone whenever they simply spend time to bond with another socially, a hormone that turns the dial on their brain for whatever emotion they’re currently experiencing, is fascinating to him.

👣: Mr. Crawling is tall – and I mean extremely tall whenever he stands up (my man has got to at least be seven feet), so I can assume that he’s probably relatively proportionate under the belt. I feel like he would be big, almost concerningly so, clocking in at around 8 inches in length. Even though his size is impressive, his dick doesn’t have much girth to it and is on the thinner side, but it is thicker towards the base compared to the head (not that you can take all of him – you can certainly give it a try, though). It’s on the veinier side, too, with a very distinct and present one on the underside of his cock. 

💉: Much like pretty much the entire cast, Mr. Silvair is also on the taller half of the height spectrum. However, I feel as though he would have a more modest, yet of course still impressive dick size. As I said before, I doubt any of them have been laid because sex just isn’t something the residents in the other world partake in – they’re too busy killing/fighting others, eating humans who find themselves lost in the other world, etc. Is this my asexual and world-building brain working? Probably haha. 

👣: Mr. Crawling really only wants sex whenever you want it, but he’s always enthusiastic and does get aroused whenever you ask if he wants to be intimate. While he does love feeling the warmth around his dick whenever you’re clamping down on him, almost like you were hugging him and not wanting to let him go, he enjoys the emotional connection during the moment more than anything else. I headcanon him (and all of the cast, to some degree) as existing somewhere on the aroace-spectrum. For Mr. Crawling, I see him as being reciproromantic/sexual with an average libido – he gets riled up whenever you’re riled up, though there are times he does get horny without you needing to do or say anything.  

💉: Much like Mr. Crawling, Mr. Silvair will have sex if you ask him to – he’ll make you beg for it, though, so he’s not as nice as the former. He prefers the control/power he gets from having sex rather than the sole act of intercourse (not to say he doesn’t enjoy the feeling, though). Plus, he finds the activity interesting since he knows it’s something most humans partake in with one another for a variety of reasons, from procreation to recreation. If you ask him to have sex and he isn’t in the mood, he’ll just use his hands or some toys and play around with you until you’re satisfied. I headcanon Mr. Silvair as being quoiromantic and eegosexual with a low libido. 

Z: ZZZ (… how quickly they fall asleep afterwards)

👣: Mr. Crawling doesn’t need to sleep (you know… being non-human and all), but he’ll curl up next to you on the bed and hold your body close to his while pretending to sleep alongside you. It’s kind of adorable, the way his head is nuzzled under your neck while his legs and arms are wrapped around your body, holding you close to him like you were a bodypillow or large stuffed animal. While you sleep, though, he’ll eventually place his head against your chest, listening intently to the sound of your heartbeat and the feeling of your chest rising and falling with each breath. Moments like this, laying there with you in silence, make his mind wander to scenarios with you he’ll never be able to fully experience. 

💉: Does not rest often, finding it a waste of time that could be spent doing something else. He understands you need your sleep, though, so he lets you do it in peace after you both have had sex. Mr. Silvair always manages to somehow make sure you have enough pillows to keep you comfortable or blankets to keep you from getting cold (you can’t help but wonder where he finds clean linens in such a grimy place…). Occasionally, however, he finds himself sitting next to you on the bed, fingers absentmindedly combing through your hair before he pulls his hand back as though you had burnt him – he doesn’t understand it, and he’s desperate to figure out an answer.
