Обговорювали з колегами переклад імені Laios. Мені "Лай" здавався природнішим, але вони наполягали, що "Лайос" більш уживаний у фандомі й коректніший щодо японської. Поки намагалася розібратися в усіх традиціях щодо -us та -os, на думку спало ще одне фентезі-ім'я зі схожою історією.

Vaarsuvius.

Бачте, існує традиція в латинських запозиченнях закінчення -us відтинати. "Gaius" перетворюється на "Ґай", Julius — на "Юлій", "Marius" — "Марій", і навіть "hippopotamus" — "гіпопотам". Ця традиція не завжди послідовна (plus, minus лишаються такими самими, наприклад; врешті, там особливо немає що відтинати), та і фентезі-світи не завжди коряться правилам реального світу — звідси мотивація моїх колег вживати "Лайос", а не "Лай". Проте з Vaarsuvius в українській мові відбувається дещо цікаве: ані "Ваарзувіюс", ані "Ваарзувій" не є прийнятними варіантами, бо ці імена є чоловічими, а Ві — не чоловік.

Ви можете заперечити: латиною -us теж сигналізує чоловічий рід, але ж у світі коміксу це нічого ні для кого не значить. Так, однак лише тому, що комікс оригінально написаний англійською, де іменники не відмінюються.

Почнімо з базових речей. В українській мові ми маємо чотири відміни іменників, дві з них відповідають за іменники з нульовим закінченням: друга відміна стосується слів чоловічого роду (і середнього, але нам це зараз не треба), третя — жіночого. Тобто хоч й існують слова чоловічого й жіночого роду з нульовим закінченням, які здаються схожими в називному відмінку, під час відмінювання різниця стає очевидною. Наприклад, "біль" (ч.р.) та "міль" (ж.р.) дуже схожі, однак у родовому відмінку маємо "болю" та "молі". Те саме стосується імен: "Менуєль" та "Нінель", але "Менуєля" та "Нінелі". 

Відмінювання здається ще більш невідворотним, щойно ми згадуємо, що більшість вживань імен у коміксі — це звернення, а тобто ми повинні будемо використовувати кличний відмінок. Проте тут ми можемо згадати про перший спосіб зробити ім'я гендернонейтральним українською мовою — не відмінювати його. І цей вибір здається очевидним, але є одне але: щойно ми перестаємо відмінювати ім'я "Ваарзувіюс", воно стає жіночим, а Ві — не жінка.

Річ у тому, що українська мова не має "шаблону" для іменників жіночого роду, що закінчуються на твердий приголосний. Тож імена на зразок "Крістел" чи "Сабін" лишатимуться незмінними в усіх контекстах. Що саме по собі нормально, в українській мові повно таких запозичень (це цілий пункт у підготовці до ЗНО), якби ж лише не той факт, що такий "шаблон" існує для іменників чоловічого роду. Оскільки імен осіб середнього роду не існує, то присутність чи відсутність відмінювання саме по собі є маркером роду. "Сем — Сема — Сему" це чоловіче ім'я, "Сем — Сем — Сем" це жіноче ім'я.

Шлях незмінюваного іменника досі може нам допомогти, однак. Нам треба всього лиш відітнути більше літер. "Ваарзуві" незмінюване й позбавлене очевидних маркерів: прикінцеве "і" нічого не означає, слово "салямі" жіночого роду, "Тбілісі" — середнього, "сулугуні" — чоловічого.

Єдине що, звісно, ім'я Гейлі теж закінчується на "і". То що це значить? Що в неї тепер гендернонейтральне ім'я? Так, але не в тому суть. "Гейлі" жіноче ім'я, але щось на зразок "Страдіварі" — чоловіче, але при тому вони мають однакову форму в усіх відмінках. Тож "Ваарзуві" лишається амбівалентним, а отже гендернонейтральним. 

Хоча, звісно...

Це лише перший спосіб досягти гендернонейтральності в українській мові. Другий — лише для найсміливіших, бо він передбачає не віднімання, а зміну. Vaarsuvius стане гендернонейтральним, якщо натомість прийде... "Ваарзувія".

Ви можете обуритися, мовляв, я так багато говорила про відмінювання, щоб натомість запропонувати до невимовного очевидну жіночу форму. Мовляв, 90% українських жіночих імен закінчуються на -а/-я! Хіба не так? Так, але взагалі-то ні. 

В українській мові є низка слів так званого спільного роду: "суддя", "вбивця", "сирота" тощо. Усі ці слова змінювані й закінчуються на -а/-я, але водночас не мають жодних формальних ознак роду. Прикметники й дієслова узгоджуються з ними як в чоловічому, так і в жіночому. Чому? Бо вони належать до першої відміни. Усі слова першої відміни відмінюються однаково, незалежно від роду. Імена теж. 

Микита (ч.р.) — Микити — Микиті — Микитою — Микито тощо.

Рита (ж.р) — Рити — Риті — Ритою — Рито тощо.

Марія (ж.р) — Марії — Марією — Маріє тощо.

Єремія (ч.р.) — Єремії — Єремією — Єреміє тощо. 

Тож на рівні граматики "Ваарзуві" та "Ваарзувія" однаково прийнятні варіанти. Їхнє ім'я насправді є однією з найпростіших частин перекладу, коли йдеться про збереження повсякчасної гендерної невизначеності англійської мови. 

Найскладнішими є слова "elf" і "parent".

ok okay i neeeeed o write this down and share it before i explode buT. as the title says. twins danny and dan (who im going to be calling James/Jamie bc i cannot express how much i despise the name dan) where, instead of disappearing into the ghost zone after he's separated from danny's body, Dan rips out Vlad's ghost half, tears THAT in half, and fuses one half with himself and the other with Danny.

Shit happens, and BOOM. Two morally ambiguous and perhaps slightly murderous demonic twins from hell. Daniel James Fenton and his Twin WHose Always Been Here What Are You Talking About :) James Daniel Fenton. They are both depressed, lonely, and one bad day from becoming a mass extinction event :)

this is because i got grabbed by the hair today and dragged into the SVSS fandom screaming and the fanart of Shen Jiu/Shen Yuan/Shen Quingqiu (????) with his fan entranced me. Ice Prince Core is my favorite thing so naturally i have to implant that onto my favorite blorbos ever :)

After the Incident, both their appearances changed and they're practically identical to each other. Sorta. They both have heterochromia and salt-and-pepper hair. But Danny has one green eye and one blue eye and white hair with black streaks, while Jamie has one blue eye and one green eye and black hair with white streaks. I'm iving them both long hair, for funsies <3

nobody can tell them apart, they keep getting confused on whose who and frankly the mix-match hair and eyes make it worse not better asjd. they're horrifically codependent. please do not separate :)

and because i must. im pulling a blood blossom/tales of the passerine and giving them to pre-robin batman. batman and his terrifying demon(??) twins. nobody is quite sure if they're human or not, and the scourge of gotham are a little too terrified to ask.

(they dont HAVE to go to batman while he's pre-robin. however. i think its much funnier that way bc gotham isn't use to A) Batman having kids, and B) Batman having TERRIFYING kids yet. think of all the new fun rumors)

they both use war fans while they're out, and neither of them use their ghost forms because they at least have the remaining empathy to know that they're more likely to murder someone accidentally as a ghost :). Ghost form is for fellow mythicals and Functionally Immortals Only! Not for Squishy Humans.

They're honestly not bad kids they're just horrifically traumatized two halves of a whole that can never be reunited ever again :).

idk what their vigilante names are but i do know that the underground refer to them in horrified whispers as 'the twins'. this all stemmed from the desperate and sudden urge to see Danny and Jamie, as their vigilante selves, hiding the lower half of their faces with fans and looking terrifyingly judgmental while they do it <333

got mad thinking about HTTYD3 again and decided to funnel it into design practice and a little retelling exercise. ohh what a Night Fury hunter character could've been...

(not supposed to be a redesign of Grimmel, but a separate character to replace him as an antagonist. he's also quite similar in design to Drago -- who i think is a wonderful villain, for the record -- so i wouldn't expect to see him in any canon HTTYD media.)

when characters like Dagur and Ryker go on about wearing a Night Fury's skull as a hat i've always been curious to.. actually see a villain who delivers on that and proves themselves as a threat prior to meeting the heroes. a character who doesn't kill dragons because he has a vendetta against them like Grimmel or seeks to control them like Drago, but just wants the social status given to people capable of killing the most dangerous.

and then being around the riders' age; someone like Astrid or Dagur who are young but already so good and so accomplished at what they do, brutal and efficient. someone to both reflect Hiccup, and be his opposite. a rival. the kind of person who would have bullied him if they knew each other as kids, but also carried through on his initial goal right at the start of the first movie: killing dragons for status.

anyway, i don't think it's a perfect design yet, but it sure was fun to develop :) Set has a wonderful face, btw

So, somehow in just under a month, I put together an animated/animatic movie trailer for Redstone and Skulk(a really awesome fic on AO3) by @silverskye13

I'm actually pretty proud of how it came out, seeing as I've never made an animatic before. And it was really fun to plot it out, record the voicelines, and mix all the sound elements. So I definetly want to do other animatics in the future.

I feel like every fic I write with Helsknight I end up with a slightly different interpretation of him, there's like 10 different variations of him living rent free in my brain at any given time. On that note, I do not feel like I could do RnS Helsknight justice, Skye's version of Helsknight is just a completely different beast than my own even if we occasionally run up against similar themes and ideas. Love that guy I'd love to put him in situations but I do not think I could write him correctly 🙏

I was actually thinking of Evildoers Helsknight as being much closer to LaHoF Helsknight, i wanted to play a little bit with the idea of broken code that I introduced in that fic, what it might be like if that problem had been worse for Hels, and that early days anger after the cloning machine, and a thing i never got to about the universe playing jokes on players, commiting to bits they speak into existence (hence the cloning machine functioning when Beef specifically built it not to and functing in ways that aligned with the /way/ it was used etc etc there was maybe gonna be a throwaway line cub says that was vaguely watcher reference-y). That isn't to say Evildoers Helsknight /is/ LaHoF Hels, I wrote him fairly differently there than I think I would've if I'd specifically set out to write him as I did in lahof. He's kind of halfway between lahof hels and a different version for a fic idea I've got floating around atm. Bc my ass can not resist writing helsknight fics apparently

But anyways the 'could they meet' question is so funny to me we should just put as many different alternate universe versions of helsknight in a room as possible and let them loose to see what happens. I think half of them would kill each other with the hour.

I've been thinking of dnd and HTP recently so the two have now combined into this anon

What would htp main four (jimmy, tango, bravo, and timmy)'s dnd classes be?

I personally think that the most obvious one would be Tango as a barbarian cause you've mentioned before that he has quite a bit of rage, though I'd feel like he'd be multiclassed due his adversion to his more rage-y side. What this other class would be? I have no idea, perhaps artificer?

Jimmy is a bit harder to nail down but i think he has the vibes of a paladin for me, don't ask me why it's just the vibes. (Though he could also be a wholesome warlock due to his supernaturally eyeball'd friends)

Timmy would 100% be a wizard, mostly because of the stereotype of being very physically weak, though if he had a choice I think he would want to be a cleric because of the appeal of the heal-y aspect

Bravo has the vibes of a warlock but the arrogant "daddy's money" attitude of a sorcerer imo, blud has a major superiority complex and we all love-hate him for it.

(I just realized that i rambled to you, under the impression that you know what dnd is- if you have no idea what im talking about im so sorry anyways have a good day :D)

and would u believe i had tango as an artificer and jimmy as a paladin (tho not a super skilled one) 😂 great minds think alike. and i love the idea of barbarian, perhaps in a HTP-like setting tango would multi-class as artificer after escaping whatever prison realm hels is. oh, and he’d def be a tiefling. cuz come on. it’d also make for great contrast if jimmy was an avariel.

i hadn’t thought abt it for bravo and timmy tho, for some reason they’re harder to pin down for me?? i see what u mean abt wizards but i’m not sure if timmy would be scholarly enough for that. i almost wonder if he’d be any class at all or if he’d be just Some Guy. yknow, didn’t actually study/train any magic or combat? real NPC vibes. then i guess part of his arc would be deciding to get over his learned helplessness and become an adventurer, and in that instance, cleric all the way.

as for bravo, a sorcerer would DEF lend itself nicely to his superiority complex… believing that simply because he was born with a certain lineage that he’s destined to be this big hero and allowing him not to think too deeply into his own actions and prejudices bc ‘he’s the good guy.’ LOVE that for him. jimmy is gonna kick his ass.

maybe someday a semblance of an actual plot for this setting will come to me and i can flesh out the idea a bit more but that’s what i’ve got for now 💃
