#and if a book is checked out enough the library will have to replace it

To be very clear about how this works (trad publishing only because that's what I'm familiar with), when an author signs a contract with an imprint to publish their book, the publisher will look at previous sales to determine how much to pay them.
So if 10,000 people read your book, and each buy a copy, then the publisher will say, "Oh, your last book sold 10,000 copies, we will assume your next book will do about the same, and we will pay you on the assumption that we will get 10,000 books worth of profit." And if 15,000 people buy a copy, then you get paid more. But if 15,000 people read it, but only 10,000 buy it, and the rest are pirated, then the author only gets paid like 10,000 copies sold.
And if 10,000 people read the book but only 5,000 copies are sold, and the rest are pirated, then the author might not be offered a deal for their next book.
Also, if I'm remembering contracts correctly (it's been like 15 years, so all of this information is dated at best, and it's possible I'm misremembering things at worst) royalties increase the more copies you sell. So your first 10,000 might be at 7%, but your next 10,000 might be at 10%, and if you sell enough it might even get up to 15%. Also, the initial payment for the book is an advance against royalties, which basically means that the publisher assumes you're going to sell X copies, calculates out what that would be in royalties, and then pays you that much. The author doesn't make any more money until they've earned that in royalties. So if your advance assumes you'll sell 10,000 books, then you don't start earning additional money beyond your advance until you've sold your 10,001st book.
Basically, every copy sold helps pay the author for the current book, either in paying down their advance, or in actual royalties, and it also helps them sell additional books, and get paid more for those additional books they sell.
we have GOT to abolish the paperback only being released a year later scheme brother i simply am not purchasing your $40 hardcover book
#publishing#if anyone is worried about how checking out from a library effects this - checking out from libraries is still good!#it encourages the library to buy other books by the author#and if a book is checked out enough the library will have to replace it#and if a book is very popular at one library it might encourage other libraries to get it as well#and if your library doesn't have the book you can request that they buy it#if your concern is getting money to the author and you have the cash to spare buying the hardcover is best#but if you don't have money to spend on books then checking a book out from the library is WAY better for the author than pirating it#and to a comment upthread - ARCs are fun for collecting if you're into that sort of thing (I have several)#but that money is not going to the author and that book does not count as a sale for them#and NEVER buy a book with it's cover torn off - that also does not count as a sale

The library was quiet today, save for the soft rustle of pages from students studying diligently and the occasional creak of the old bookshelves that your university so desperately needed to replace.
You liked it this way, a nice, quiet place far away from everyone, where you could just relax and be alone, and where Solivan’s eyes could follow you without drawing much attention. He was sitting nearby, alone at the end of the big oak table tucked away in one of the library’s four corners.
You had purposefully chosen a spot where he could watch you, presenting yourself out in the open for him. Pretty generous of you, honestly. You could feel it. Sol’s gaze, always lingering on you, his presence a shadow at the edge of your peripheral vision.
Occasionally, you’d glance up on purpose, just to catch a glimpse of his eyes meeting yours before he buried himself back into whatever book he had open, his face flushing that pretty red colour.
It was comforting in a twisted, intoxicating way. You already knew he was infatuated with you. It started off quite tame, to be fair; you hadn’t really noticed him before since he always sat at the back of the class, away from judgmental eyes.
But then the little things started. A shadow following you home, or that burning feeling of being watched.
Then one windy evening, you came back home to your apartment to find your window lock broken, and the place freezing because of it. Naturally, you freaked out. You called Crowe to come assess the damage, check if anything was missing, and to keep you company while you tied a flimsy ribbon around the latch, hoping it would be enough to keep your stalker out.
Unfortunately, Sol needed a lot more than ribbon to deter him.
That same night, he oh so easily undid your makeshift lock and slid right up next to your unconscious sleeping body, stroking your hair and holding your hand as if you were lovers.
Unlucky for him, you were a light sleeper, and the slight brush of his hand woke you. The room was so dark, save for the beams of moonlight streaming through the same window Sol had crept through not too long ago. You could only catch pieces of green and black hair shuffling around as you lay, somewhat petrified, in bed.
Then he spoke.
“My sweet pumpkin… sorry about your lock. I’ll make it up to you, I promise,” his lips ghosting over the shell of your ear as he whispered to you sweetly.
You felt him shift, pressing a gentle kiss to your cheek before sliding out of your bed, bidding your “sleeping” self goodbye as he slipped back out through your window. By the time you scurried to see his figure outside, he was already gone.
The next day, his actions couldn’t have been more different. You met him face to face in your art class, where you were paired as new partners for the upcoming project.
“My name is Solivan Brugmansia. Sol for short,” he said.
It was the same voice.
At the time, your blood ran cold as you realized the tall, brooding man in front of you was the same one who’d been lying next to you in bed the night before, breaking into your apartment just for a few moments of bliss with you. You.
Were you creeped out? Of course. Scared? Maybe a little. But for some sick reason, you were flattered that he’d taken such a liking to you.
“Sol… like the sun? That’s so cute, considering you’re dressed so… alternatively,” you said, deciding to experiment a little.
You stepped closer, your hand brushing against the thick black-and-green choker he wore. Your fingers moved lower to lift the key necklace around his neck, examining it carefully. Hmm. It didn’t look like a key to your apartment, so that was good.
You looked up at him, offering a sweet smile as you stepped back. You noticed how red he’d gotten and how he murmured under his breath about how pretty you were, clearly under the assumption that you hadn’t heard.
Oh, you were going to have fun with this one.
-
Today, you decided to push him further and tease him a little to see how he’d react.
Standing up from your seat, you knew Sol’s eyes would already be on you, watching and studying your every move as you walked over to the English section. To be fair, you actually did need some books for an upcoming research paper but you grabbed one at random in all honesty.
As you scanned the shelves, you found the perfect target: a book just out of reach. You stretched your arm dramatically, fingers brushing the spine but never quite making contact. You let out a dramatic, frustrated sigh, even pouting a little as you looked up at the book, knowing full well Sol was watching.
“Having trouble?” His voice was velvet, smooth and dark, as he appeared from nowhere. His tall figure loomed just behind you, towering over your own, and close enough that you could feel the warmth radiating off his body.
You turned to him, feigning surprise. “Oh, Sol! I didn’t see you there. Could you help me, please?” You looked up at him with pouty lips and big eyes, clasping your hands together as you played the damsel in distress. And he was eating it up.
His pierced lips curved into a small smile, but his eyes, those intense, bright eyes, burned with something else. “Let me help you.”
He reached over your shorter body, effortlessly pulling the book from its place. His arm brushed yours, and you shivered, allowing the reaction to linger longer than necessary. He noticed. Of course he did.
“Oh, thank you, Sol,” you said softly, looking up at him through your lashes. “God, you’re such a lifesaver for me!”
Something flickered in his gaze. Satisfaction? Possessiveness? Maybe it was a bit of both. “Anything for you,” he murmured.
You took the book from his hands, letting your fingers graze his. A deliberate move, subtle but effective. His breath hitched, barely audible, but you caught it.
“Are you studying by yourself?”
Holding the book he’d just grabbed for you close to your chest, an idea popped into your head.
“Yeah, I was uh… sitting over there.”
Sol’s gaze shifted as he gestured to the big oak table he’d been seated at earlier. Thank god he’d picked a more isolated area to reside in.
“Oh my god, perfect! I’ll come sit with you!”
Before he could get an answer in, you zipped back to your study area to gather your bag and papers, carrying it all over to the empty table, save for Sol’s setup, and dropped it all on top.
“You don’t have to stay with me, you know,” he said, glancing at you as he slipped back onto his chair. “I’m fine on my own.”
“I like being with you, though,” you replied, your voice now more quiet since, well, you were in the library. “With you.”
He blinked, his cheeks flushing as he tried to focus back on his book, but you weren’t about to make it that easy for him. You slipped into the chair beside him, leaning slightly over the table as you pretended to skim through the pages of the book he’d grabbed for you.
“Hey, Sol,” you said, your tone sweet but laced with mischief. “Do you think Edgar Allan Poe was really that depressing, or do you think he was just dramatic?”
He looked at you, clearly caught off guard by the sudden shift in topic. “Poe… was a complicated man,” he began. “His life was filled with tragedy, but I think he used his writing as a way to… cope.”
“Hmm,” you mused, tilting your head as if deep in thought. “I don’t know, some of his stuff just seems so… intense. Maybe I’m just not smart enough to get it?” You leaned in closer, your shoulder brushing against his as you gave him a wide-eyed, innocent look.
“That’s not true,” he said quickly, his voice firm. “You’re incredibly intelligent.”
“Aww, you really think so?” you cooed, leaning even closer until your face was mere inches from his. His breath hitched, and you swore you saw his grip tighten on the edge of the table.
Before he could respond, you shifted, swinging a leg over to settle yourself on his lap. His entire body went rigid beneath you, and his face turned a deep, furious red.
“What are you doing?” he stammered, his hands hovering awkwardly near your hips, unsure of where to place them.
“Getting comfortable,” you said simply, wrapping your arms around his neck as you leaned in close, your lips nearly brushing his ear. “Is that okay?”
He swallowed hard, his hands finally resting on your waist as if he couldn’t help himself. “Y-yeah, it’s okay,” he murmured, his voice barely above a whisper.
You could feel the tension in his body, the way his breaths came out more quickly, staggered, and you knew you had him exactly where you wanted him. The hard press of his cock hidden beneath the layers of clothing between you only confirmed it, and you smiled to yourself, savouring the bit of power you held over him.
You hummed, pretending to be clueless about his… growing problem as you skimmed your books, jotting down notes here and there, while Sol struggled to even get through one paragraph of the book he was reading, your body on top of his becoming too much of a distraction.
The girl of his dreams, the one he snuck out to see every night, the one he studied so closely and had fantasies about, was, right now, in this very moment, sitting on his lap. Her plush ass perfectly slotted against his body. And it was driving him insane.
“Sol?” you asked suddenly, your voice cutting through his haze. “You haven’t turned the page in a while. Is it boring?”
His eyes darted to yours, wide and panicked, as if you’d caught him doing something forbidden. “N-no, it’s fine,” he stammered, his hands flexing against your waist. “Just… distracted.”
You tilted your head, feigning innocence. “Distracted? By what?” You leaned in close, your lips brushing the shell of his ear as you whispered, “Is something on your mind? You can talk to me, you know…”
His breath hitched again, and he clutched you tighter as if grounding himself. “No,” he whispered, voice low and strained. “I-I’m okay.”
You smiled, pressing a soft kiss to his cheek, savoring the way he froze beneath you. “If you’re so sure,” you murmured, your voice laced with a little bit of concern. “Because if you need to talk I’m always here for you sweetness.”
Yeah that did it.
Sol’s pants felt so tight as the curve of your ass shifted on and off his hard, clothed cock, and he bit his lip to try and stifle any noises as you moved around. His hands gripped your waist as he spoke into your ear, low and raspy.
Sol’s hands trembled as they clutched your waist, his knuckles whitening with restraint. “Please… sit still,” he begged, his voice strained and heavy with need.
You tilted your head, pretending to consider his plea, your lips curling into a wicked smile. “Hmm, I don’t know,” you teased, shifting just slightly, enough to make him suck in a sharp breath. “You seem a little tense, Sol. Are you sure you’re okay?”
His eyes darted to yours, wide and desperate. “I-I need… I should go.”
Before you could respond, he gently lifted you off his lap and bolted from the table, his long strides carrying him toward the exit of the library and to the left, down the hall to where the bathrooms were tucked away.
You watched him disappear through the library exit, a slow grin spreading across your face. How adorable. He thought he could hide from you.
Leaving your things behind, you followed. The hallway leading to the bathrooms was dimly lit, the hum of fluorescent lights buzzing faintly above, reminding you for a moment of how shitty this university could be.
You pushed the door open silently, locking it behind you with ease and stepped inside, finding Sol leaning over the sink, his head bowed, gripping the edges so tightly his knuckles were pale. He was panting, looking as if he might pass out from just being teased by you, his hard-on visible to you as it strained against his pants.
“Running away from me, Sol?” you asked, your voice lilting as you closed the distance between you.
He froze, lifting his head up instantly, his reflection in the mirror staring back at you, panic swirling in his bright eyes. “W-What are you doing here?” he stammered, his voice cracking slightly as he turned around to face you.
You stopped just behind him, close enough that your breath brushed along the nape of his neck. “You ran off so suddenly… I got worried,” you murmured, your fingers trailing lightly along the edge of his sleeve, brushing his fingers with yours. “What’s wrong, Sol? Did I do something wrong?”
“N-no,” he choked out, refusing to meet your gaze. His hands flexed against the sink, and you noticed the way his shoulders tensed, his whole body tense with barely-contained frustration.
“You’re lying to me,” you whispered, stepping closer, your chest now pressed flush against his. You slid your hands up his arms slowly, feeling him shiver beneath your touch. “You’re so worked up, Sol… what were you planning to do while you're here?”
“I—I wasn’t going to–” he stuttered, but the words died on his lips as your hands moved to his waist, your fingers brushing along the waistband of his pants.
“Shh,” you cooed, standing on the tips of your toes and brushing some of his hair out of the way to press a gentle kiss to his neck. “No need to lie to me sweetness. I already know.”
His breath hitched audibly, and his hands clenched the sink harder as he fought to maintain control. “You can’t just… do this to me,” he rasped, his voice breaking with desperation.
“Do what?” you asked innocently, your lips trailing to his ear. “Help you? Because it seems to me like you need it, Sol.”
You let your fingers dip lower, teasing the button of his pants as you whispered, “So tell me… do you want my help?”
His resolve crumbled in an instant. “Yes,” he breathed, his voice barely more than a whimper. “Please.”
Sol’s hands gripped the edge of the sink so tightly, his knuckles were turning white with restraint, but his body was betraying him. He was trembling with need, his chest heaving, every breath shallow and hitched. You could feel his thighs tremble as your hands deftly moved to unzip his pants, undoing some buttons along the way.
You took your time, savoring the moment with this gorgeous man crumbling under your touch and gaze. Slowly, you pressed your body flush against his, feeling the heat of his skin against yours. You could feel the stiffness of his arousal, throbbing against the confines of his boxers, and it made your own… area pulsate in response.
“Sol…” you whispered against his ear. “You’re so fucking beautiful like this. So desperate for me.”
He sucked in a sharp breath, his hands still resting against the sink, his body shaking as if he couldn’t decide whether to push you away or pull you closer.
“I can’t… I can’t take it anymore,” he groaned, his voice cracking. “I need you… now.”
You smiled, a wicked grin spreading across your face. You knew exactly what he wanted, what his body was begging for. You slid your fingers down the waistband of his boxers, barely grazing his skin, and Sol’s breath hitched, his hips jerking forward in anticipation.
“Patience, Sol,” you teased, your fingers circling his cock gently, slowly, barely touching but just enough contact to make him shudder. “You’ve been so good for me so far, haven’t you?”
His hands flexed against the sink again, and he let out a low, guttural moan. “I need you,” he whispered again, more urgently now, his voice raw with desperation.
You didn’t make him wait any longer.
With a swift motion, you freed him from the remains of his clothing, your hands finally wrapping around his cock completely. Sol’s body jerked at the contact, his head falling forward onto your shoulder as a sharp gasp left his lips. He was so sensitive, so responsive, and it made your heart race.
“You’re mine now,” you murmured, your voice low and commanding. You began to move your hand slowly, torturously, teasing him just enough to make him squirm, but never enough to let him find release.
Sol’s breath came in ragged gasps, his body trembling with need, his hands gripping the counter as if it was the only thing keeping him from completely falling apart. “Fuck…” he muttered. “Please… I can’t take it.”
“You can take it, Sol,” you whispered, your voice dripping with satisfaction. “You’ve made it this far, haven’t you? You’re going to finish when I tell you to. Understand?”
He nodded his head, never disagreeing with your demands, his eyes were glazed with lust for you, his body twitching with every slow stroke from your hands. “Yes… Yes, I understand.”
Sol whined softly to himself, as you jerked your hand up and down. He closed his eyes, swallowing hard, only for you to sweetly tell him to open them back up, of course he obeyed, watching your slow, deliberate movements. The way you were hovering over him right now, your eyes boring into his, as your hands were wrapped around his cock, applying more pressure.
“You’re being so good for me Sol…” you purred, slowly sinking towards the ground, not caring about being in a bathroom, or even caring that you were doing this at your university. You looked up at him sweetly, asking him politely to hold your hair back, and he did it right away, after all how could he refuse?
He gently pulled all your hair back, somewhat neatly wrapping it around his hand, careful to not pull too tightly. He felt your warm hand gently stroke his cock, your lips just inches away, so so close.
Then you started to tease him. Licking up the underside of his length, gently pressing kisses from the base to the tip, your tongue teasing him as he whimpered and started to shake underneath you, completely submitting himself to you.
He could feel your hot breath as you hummed and toyed around with him. You slowly started to take his whole length into your mouth, inch by inch until your nose was pressed against his pelvis. He was in heaven.
Sol gasped at the sensation, his hand tugging at your hair as he watched you bob your head up and down, your hot, wet mouth, and shivered at the way his cock hit the back of your throat.
“P-Please… hah… pumpkin…” Sol called out for you. His legs shook gently as his climax slowly built up, soft moans and whimpers escaping his lips as he bit down on one hand to muffle his noises, your tempo never letting up as you continued to suck on him.
“Can I cum? Please… let me cum for you pumpkin.” He was begging quietly in the bathroom, watching you suck and hearing you make a muffled ‘mhm’ noise with your pretty plump lips wrapped around him, granting him permission without words.
Within seconds, his hands flew to the back of your head, pushing you down as he came into your mouth, moaning softly as he did, and you graciously let him, taking it all as you felt his fingers dig into your scalp. After a few moments he took a deep breath, releasing his grip on you, and falling back against the cool countertop of the bathroom sink.
You looked up at him sweetly, sticking your tongue out to show him that you had swallowed it all.
Freak.
Slowly, you started to stand up with a satisfied smile, your eyes meeting Sol’s pretty red-orange ones. He was still catching his breath, his chest rising and falling, his skin flushed with heat.
You took a step back, eyes never leaving his, and fixed your own clothes with a bit of deliberate slowness, just to tease him. You tucked your shirt back into your uniform skirt, your fingers trailing over the fabric that dipped between your breasts, noticing that Sol’s gaze followed your every movement, still dazed, and still processing everything that had just happened in the bathroom.
Once you were finished, you stepped closer to him, your body just inches away from his. You tilted your head slightly, studying him with that playful glint in your eyes.
“Guess we’re even now, huh?” you whispered, your lips curling into a sly grin.
Sol’s eyes flickered to yours, his confusion evident even with that lingering haze of pleasure clouding his mind. “What do you mean?” he asked, his voice low and hoarse.
You leaned in, your lips brushing against his ear as you whispered, “I know you’ve been sneaking into my apartment at night, Sol… I can hear you when you’re outside my window, and well… playing with yourself in my bed.”
You pulled back, eyes locking with his as you saw the way his pupils dilated, the sudden panic flashing in his gaze. “I’ll make it easier for you though and leave the window unlocked for you tonight, darling,” you purred, your voice dripping with both sweetness and mischief.
A smirk tugged at the corner of your lips as you straightened up, straightening your clothes one last time, watching as Sol stood frozen, his expression a mixture of disbelief and awe.
“Don’t keep me waiting, okay?” you teased, giving him a quick kiss, before turning away and walking towards the door.
You pulled it open, leaving him standing in the bathroom alone to process what had just happened, as you stepped out into the hallway. The last thing you heard before the door clicked shut was his soft mutter, “Damn… she knows?”
You couldn’t help but giggle to yourself as you walked away, knowing exactly what would happen that night. He was yours from now on.

The Price of Knowledge
summary: The price of books these days is outrageous. characters: mattheo riddle. ravenclaw!reader warnings: none, just fluff word count: 663
Mattheo Riddle was not a studios person. He didn't spend his nights buried in his textbooks, he never planned out essays in advance, and the only reason he even showed up to class most days was to make sure you didn't work yourself into an early grave.
So when you walked into the library, ready to gather everything you needed for your upcoming project, and found every single relevant book missing, you understandably distressed.
"What do you mean all the books on magical architecture are checked out?" you asked, staring at Madam Pince in disbelief.
The librarian huffed. "I mean exactly that. Someone got to them first."
You frowned, gripping your list of sources. "But that doesn't make sense. No one else is going this topic for their project. Who would-"
A slow realization settled over you, your eyes narrowing.
There was only one person who would go to such lengths to bother you.
—
You stormed into the Slytherin common room, marching straight past a very startled looking Theo and Enzo.
"Where is he?" you demanded.
Theo smirked. "Wow, I don't think I've ever seen you this mad."
"Mattheo," you said through gritted teeth. "Where is he?"
"That depends," came a familiar voice from behind you. "Are you looking for me because you missed me, or because you want to kill me?"
You turned on your heel, and sure enough, Mattheo was leaning casually against the doorway of the common room, arms crossed, a smirk tugging at his lips.
"You stole all the books I need for my project," you accused.
He tsked. "Stole is a strong word. I borrowed them."
"You don't even like books!"
"That's not true," he said, smirking. "I like you. and you like books. Therefore, I have an appreciation for books by association."
You crossed your arms. 'Give them back."
He tilted his head, pretending to consider. "Hmm, I don't know. See, I put in all this effort to check them out for you. Seems only fair that I get something in return."
You gave him a flat look. "Mattheo."
He grinned. Unphased. "One kiss per book."
Your mouth fell open. "You- you blackmailed me for affection?"
He shrugged. "I prefer to think of it as an exchange of goods and services."
"You are unbelievable"
"And yet, here you are, still madly in love with me."
"That is not what this is."
Mattheo stepped closer, smirk softening into something almost playful. "Come on, sweetheart. You're always so stressed about projects. I figured I'd help you out and have a little fun while I'm at it."
You signed, running a hand through your hair. "You really expect me to-"
"A deal's a deal," he cut in, raising a brow. "Unless, of course, you don't want the books..."
You groaned, but the warmth in his gaze made it hard to stay mad. You stepped closer, rising onto your toes to press a quick kiss to his cheek.
"There," you muttered. "Now give me my books."
Mattheo chuckled. "Sweetheart, that was one. you still owe me fove more."
You face flushed. "You are insufferable."
You huffed, glaring at him for a moment before finally conceding. You kissed the other side of his face, then his forehead, then his nose- and each time, he grinned wider, clearly reveling in your flustered state.
"Two more," he murmured.
You hesitated, heart thudding, before leaning in and pressing a lingering kiss to the corner of his mouth.
His smirk flattered, dark eyes flickering over you with something deeper.
Your breath hitched.
"Last one," he said softly, his voice lower.
You swallowed, pulse racing as you finally kissed him properly, you lips meeting his in a way that made the entire common room disappear.
Mattheo didn't let you pull away so easily this time. His hand found your waist, tugging you closer as he deepened the kiss, his usual teasing replaced with something far more intoxicating.
By the time you broke apart, you were breathless.
Mattheo smirked, brushing his thumb over your cheek. "You know, I was going to give you the books anyway."
You glares at him, although it lacked any real malice. "I hate you."
His grinned wideded. "No you don't."
You smile the smallest bit before turning away.
He was right, you don't.

talk me down
3.7k / therapist!joel x f!reader
← masterlist
Summary: You’re finally ready to sit down and discuss your obvious daddy issues. Your therapist, Joel, has his methods.
Warnings/Information/Heads-Up: MA 18+ (minors DNI), NO OUTBREAK, abuse of position (therapist!joel), discussions of parental divorce, daddy issues, praise kink, daddy kink, pet names, cursing/swearing, age gap, handjob (for a lil bit?) unprotected p in v, cockwarming (if you squint?), breathplay (I’m running out of breath typing all this are we good to go?)
A/N: this is my first fic wow how exciting, I can’t thank my new friends enough for the brainstorming and helping make it to tumblr so let’s just get on with it yeah? tell me if you want more, my requests are open x
“Oooh, fuck,” you gasp, your head coming back up to watch as his hand disappeared under the drape of your skirt. Suddenly you felt him cup your aching mound, taking in a short breath at the feeling of finally getting some much-desired pressure down there. “So fuckin’ wet… were you this wet during our whole session, kitten?” He asked. It was sick and twisted, you knew it was. That’s why you let out a shameful little nod, your legs wanting to clench around his hand there. He let out a disgusted scoff, you deserved it. You wanted to fuck your therapist.
“So what brings you here today?”
Your eyes shyly evade his, instead choosing to graze over the belongings of your new therapist’s office. It looked like a small library the way books were lined up and stacked on the shelves. The desk behind him was a dark oak, and everything had its place, not a pen out of line. After you deliberately ignore his question, he probes you again.
“It says on your intake form that you have... A distant relationship with your father due to your parents' divorce. Is that something you want to talk about with me today?”
His voice is sweet like honey, but you’re the only one dripping. You failed during your extended research on therapists to check his picture because you had no idea you signed up for someone so fucking handsome.
Your jaw was tight as you clamped your legs tighter together one draped over the other, trying to conceal your growing arousal. Talk, or he’ll think you’re mute!
“Yes.” You say, clearing your throat as you readjust your skirt over your lap, tugging at the hem.
You confide in Joel about the hardships of your parents growing up. The house was never quiet, always fighting, tearing each other down, and it just wasn’t healthy. You thought you’d thank the lord the day they filed for a divorce. You didn’t expect to lose the relationship you had with your father in the midst of it all.
You were still young, trying to grow up and learn, his absence mattered to you, even if it didn’t to your mother. He came around a lot at first. He’d pick you up from school and steal you away for a few hours, getting ice cream to celebrate your reunion with him.
But then, he got a new girlfriend. You weren’t sure how she managed to replace both you and your mother, but she did. You saw him less, he started not meeting your expectations. Soon, he became a weird distant memory. Now, as a young adult, you combat all the unjust things the wake of his departure caused. You couldn’t bear the thought of dating someone your age. Everyone was young and immature, asking for nudes over text after the first date if they even got your phone number at all. Now it was all just over social media or dating apps.
“Older men are just more... Refined. They have their priorities and goals, and they’re like... Actually accomplishing shit. Guys my age are just..” You paused, your eyes meeting his own to fill in the gaps.
“.. Not meeting your expectations?” Joel asked, his pen clutched in his hand as he scribbled something in his notepad.
“Right.” You let out breathily, your eyes falling to the chest hair you could see exposed by his button-up shirt.
This was a perfect example because look at Dr. Joel Miller! His Ph.D. decorated the wall with numerous other accolades on his shelves, so you knew he was smart. Being a therapist made him a good listener, you’d never have to feel like you were the therapist to a frat guy again.
You let out an involuntary whimper, a white-hot flash soaring through the pit of your stomach. You were dripping for him, and you could feel it against your clenched thighs.
“I know talking about these topics is difficult, but you’re doing a good job.” He praised you as you felt your chest and cheeks flush red with his attention.
Your breathing was staggered, you needed to release the tension between your legs desperately.
“You-- uhm, you think I’m doing a good job?”
His eyes flashed up to you with the question, something dark and tantalizing about the way he looked over you now. It was like a predator meeting prey the way his eyes began to rake over you.
Your arousal was obvious in the way your knee anxiously bounced up and down, continuing to readjust in your seat, begging for him to tell you that your time with him was up so you could go home and use your vibrator on your clit, thinking about Dr. Joel Miller between your legs.
You watched as he stood up from his chair across from you, your eyes tracking him as he nodded slowly. He clasped his hands behind his back, his strong biceps fighting the material of his shirt for dominance. The hand closest to you came down and did a delicate sweep around the rim of the chair you were sitting in.
“You’re doing great, baby girl.” He praised again, stopping to stand next to you. You were eye-level to his waist, your lips parting at the sight of the bulge in his pants. Oh, fuck me, so that’s what he’s been hiding behind his notepad.
His hand gently reached out to you, two straight fingers under your chin as he tilted you up to look at him. Your long eyelashes batted at him, teeth piercing down into your bottom lip. You let out an involuntary sigh as his hand moved up your cheek, bringing you in to rest against his thigh.
He was warm, and he smelled like Old Spice, god, you could swear it was the same one your dad used to use. You whimper at the thought, digging your face gently further into his protection. You felt his hand gently caress the back of your head, stroking back your hair from your face.
You wanted him, your pussy wanted him, and the throbbing need for his attention and affection was incurable. You began to press kisses into the material of his pants, losing all pride as you fell to your knees in front of him and palmed your hand over his growing erection.
You braved looking up at him, his face watching you in adoration, like he was proud of you.
“Is this what you want? I’ll do whatever you want.” You say meekly, desperate to please.
“You know what I think you need?” He asks, his voice dropped an octave, and it was making you purr. He was more sultry now, his hands finding yours and guiding you up off of the floor. You finally shake your head, your hands gently moving up his chest and feeling his toned pecs and broad shoulders.
Seeing him this close made your heart flutter. He was so handsome, so grown. His wispy curls were adorning the same salt and pepper as his beard. He had worn lines by his eyes and on his forehead, his curious mind must always be causing his brows to furrow. He had you breathless at the mouth and achingly wet down below.
“I think you need me to take care of you. Is that what you want, baby? Someone to show you how much they care about you? Someone to be where you need them most?” His strong hand is traveling down your front now, Joel’s pointer finger curling into the front of your skirt. Your lips part as he tugs so hard that you’re falling into him, your small hands clutching the landscape of his biceps.
“Yes-- fuck, please Joel, yes.” You nearly beg. Be there for me, be inside me.
He let out a heavy grunt of satisfaction, closing the distance between you as he cradled your face in his big hands and connected your lips. You felt safe, letting your walls fall down as he took care of you.
You melted in his hold, Joel’s tongue carefully gliding over your bottom one in a request for you to part yours for him. You followed his lead, a whimpering moan leaving you as you felt his tongue invade your mouth. He was moving you backward methodically until the back of your thighs hit the desk you previously admired. Your hips shook the frame, hearing pens and some papers clatter to the floor.
You felt overwhelmingly hot, you needed to shed some layers. Like the mind reader he was, Joel’s hands moved down to the hem of your top, breaking your heated kiss to discard the material in his way.
He generously cupped your breasts held away by your bra, another desperate moan leaving you as you watched him through hooded eyes admire your body. His hands were quick to settle on your hips, fingertips burning into your skin as he lifted you up onto the desk with ease. Fuck, he had the kind of strength that looked effortless.
Joel was taking charge, and it was so nice, he knew exactly what he wanted to do, and you didn’t have to worry about anything. His legs nudged your own open, cool air finally greeting your needy pussy. The sensation had your head falling back, accidentally breaking your kiss once more.
“You want daddy to take care of that for you with his cock?” His foul words had you at a loss of your own, your jaw slack as he pressed his hips into yours and you could feel his dick pressed right up against your pussy.
“Take daddy’s belt off.” He grumbled his orders, a quick nod leaving you. You didn’t want to waste his time.
“Yes.” You whimpered.
“Yes, what?” His voice was stern and articulate, making you bend your will as his close proximity flooded your senses. You couldn’t find his belt soon enough. You popped the button of his jeans and nearly tore off the zipper at his ask.
“Yes, daddy.” You whimper, a greedy smile on your lips to see you earned his favor. He adoringly cupped one side of your cheek as both of your heads rested against one another’s to watch you pull down his dark briefs.
He let out a strained grunt at the release, his flesh going to slap against his tanned stomach. He was already unbuttoning his shirt as you made a fist around him, watching his face to see how he liked it. Too fast? A little slower? Too rough... You paused and spat down on him, your eyes darting back up to his as he let out a satisfied sigh. Let me do it perfectly for you, Joel.
“So good for me.” He purred, his thumb brushing down the slope of your nose and over your swollen bottom lip that you had bruised from biting down so hard on it. He pushed the tip of his thumb past your lips, the intrusion a surprise but you eagerly sucked to appease him. The action made him swell in your hand to fullness, even beginning to feel too heavy in your hand as you continued to work over him.
“Is this all for me?” You asked eagerly, a sweet smile gracing your face.
You watched as he leaned in, your eyelashes fluttering closed as he came to press his warm lips against the crown of your head. “All for you, baby girl.” He mumbled against your forehead.
“Oh,” you let out in a sweet surprised little moan, your hand working over him eagerly faster. You didn’t care if you got off at this point, as long as he did.
“Lie back, baby.” His voice was rocky like gravel, you could already see his chest heaving at the attention of your hands. You did as he asked, but not before he unclipped your bra so your tits were on full show for him.
You reached one of your hands back, already gripping the edge of the table as you braced yourself for him. He was so large, easily the largest you had ever been with. You wanted to feel every inch of man that he was inside of your throbbing cunt.
Your skirt was merely an obstacle in his way, watching him toss it up to show your lacey panties underneath. You bit down on your lip with a wide smirk on your face, he really liked the lace.
“So fuckin pretty,” he admired, your hands coming to rest over his own, your nails gently grazing down his forearms to his fingers. His pointer finger and thumb grazed over the soaked material, admiring how he could see your pretty pussy underneath it. The lace was so dainty and fragile in his hands, he could just--
You gasp as his large hands rip the delicate lace right open, a messy opening of broken threads but now, he had unlimited access to your sex. He was so strong, you hoped he would split you open the same way.
His hands took a grip on the tops of your parted thighs from the outside, taking one foul yank as you felt him press his cock between your wet folds. You were back to gripping and stroking over his forearms, your delicate hand coming up to feel his stubbled cheek.
“Joel please, I need you.” you whimpered out, his head nodding against yours as a few of the curlier strands on his head fell onto his forehead. He was so handsome when he was turned on.
Joel’s heavy huffs broke the eye contact of his cock gliding up and down your arousal, the slick lubing him perfectly. He was perfectly glazed over now, all because of you, his heavy thumb coming down to gently circle over your throbbing clit.
You let out a cry at the much-needed attention, your walls pulsing for him to fill you up.
“Joel!” You whined out in anticipation, your jaw dropping as he finally guided his tip to you without warning and slammed into your depths until he bottomed out in one thrust. His hand was quick to clamp over your mouth, stopping you from letting out a sobbing moan as tears started to swell at the brim of your eyes.
“Don’t want anyone to hear us, princess,” His voice was broken by grunts and loose breaths, his palm swallowing your hot high pitched whines. “Or else we’ll have to stop.” You did not want him to stop!
You quickly shook your head and clasped your wrist around his which kept your mouth shut. I’ll be good, I’ll be good for you Joel. A tear slipped as you peppered apologetic kisses to the inside of his palm, your eyes desperately connecting with his in a silent ask for him to please continue fucking you.
Joel swiveled his hips back, his jeans clinging to his upper thighs as he rolled back into you. You couldn’t help but clench your eyes closed and let out a broken moan. He filled you up in all the best ways possible, he was perfect inside of you, every goddamn inch. You didn’t realize how loud you had gotten, his hand pushing your head down further into the desk and squeezing into your cheeks until you snapped out of it.
“What did fuckin’ tell you?” He punched out. God, you could feel him pulsating inside of your tight walls.
“God, this tight pussy feels so-- fuckin’ good.”
You moaned quietly at the compliment, a blissed-out smile on your lips still against his palm as he started a steady rhythm rocking into you.
You whimpered as the desk started to creak with each of his heavy thrusts, pinching your ass against the desk but he felt too good to complain. Sure, you’d have a red line imprinted on your cheeks, but hell, it was so worth it. “Such a good fuckin’ girl, little angel for me-- fuck,” he grunted as he used the hand wrapped around your mouth as leverage, holding your head down as his hips snapped into you mercilessly. You were crying out moans into his palm, but nothing loud ever left the room, just like he wanted.
Your hands are clenching at the desk now, desperate not to fly off. Through blurry eyes, you saw his face, tight and twisted as he admired the way your breasts bounced with each of his thrusts.
You bravely reached up to take his hand around your mouth, shifting it down to wrap around your windpipe. You gave him an angelic little smile, biting down on your lower lip to hold in your dirty moans.
Joel watched you in awe, nodding with his sick little half-smirk as he started to squeeze at the sides of your throat. Fuck, he’s done this before, he knows exactly what he’s doing. The heightened experience turns you on, he’s not some 20-something idiot who cares only about getting his dick wet. Joel wants you to cum.
“You look at me baby.. fuck--, don’t break eye contact until you wanna breathe, darlin’.” His accent drawled in your ear and made your pussy even wetter for him. One of his hands squeezed at the sides of your delicate windpipe, his other hand snaking between you two as his electric fingers found your buzzing clit.
The attention was a lot, but you were a whore for it.
His thrusts grew sloppier, but he was pacing himself, Joel wants you to cum first.
You whimper at the idea of him putting you ahead of his own interested and needs, your head growing foggy as your wrist wrapped around his own that held you down but you didn’t look away from his amber eyes. He licked his lips in desire watching you, your lips parting for air as you finally looked away.
He followed through on his promise, his strong hands going lax as your head fell to the side, eyes closing in bliss while your pussy fluttered around his dick.
“Fuck baby girl,” he panted through a mumble as his spare hand massaged over your breasts. “Got me losin’ my goddamn mind.” He moaned something that resembled your name, pinching at your sensitive peaks until he had you whimpering.
“Joel I- oh god,” your stomach dropped as the tip of his dick massaged at your sweet spot, a cry threatening to spill from your lips but you knew he didn’t like you being too loud in his office so you hold it in, your cheeks going hot red.
It was all too much. Your foggy head, his hands on your sensitive bits, his fucking dick slamming into you. You felt so small in his hold, his body shielding you from the outside world as he drove you face-first into your earth-shattering orgasm.
“Joel-Joel please, fuck, I’m gonna-,” Your chin tilted up and your back arched, his hand instantly moving back up to your throat so you could feel even more floated during the crash of your orgasm.
“Cum for me princess. Cum for me now.” He demanded in a mumble.
It coursed through your body like an electric current, your body short-circuiting from the amount of pleasure it was receiving all at once.
Your lips were parted, but nothing came out. You couldn’t hear a thing, only Joel, only him as he ruts himself against your core and you feel him spill his hot cum into the depths of your sex. You lazily smirked as you made your walls flutter around him, your core pulsing. Could almost feel him in your belly.
His breaths were heavy, heavenly. It made your skin clammy, the both of you so fucked up that you were stuck in place. You didn’t realize it, but you had reached up to cup his face, your thumb gently gliding down the curve of his crooked nose. Your lips gently came together as your head came up, kissing the tip of his nose before going to lay back down on his desk.
“Oh, baby girl,” Joel purred in adoration, his mouth coming down to greet yours in a delicate kiss. “Did such a good job.” Both of you were so drunk on your orgasms, everything was so perfect.
You lazily kissed him back, your arms wrapping around the tops of his shoulders with your fingers lightly fisting the hair at the nape of his neck to keep him close as he softened inside of you. You could stay here like this forever.
You glanced over just in time, seeing the last grain of sand fall down in his glass sand timer. Your session with Dr. Joel Miller was over.
He helped you hop off his desk, your wobbly legs needing to find their strength again. His cum was already meeting the tops of your inner thighs, your face blushing at the feeling. You were quite literally gaping for him.
Joel cleared his throat and easily pulled his jeans back up to the top of his hips at his waist, securing his belt and zipper before he fisted your discarded, ripped apart panties.
“Oh,” you whispered a bit embarrassed at the sight of them. You had just finished pulling your shirt back onto your torso, stuffing your bra inside your purse. No way you were going to try and put that thing back on. You reached out for him to hand them over, your eyes widening as he pulled his hand away and stuffed them into his pocket.
“For safe keeping…” He trailed off, his eyes still dark as they looked down at your wide ones. Well, you weren’t getting those back any time soon. They were his now, your torn to threads black lace panties. You nodded and weakly smiled, still trying to catch your breath.
Joel walked you out, tapping his absentminded secretary’s desk to tell her to find something in both of your calendars for a future date.
“I think I can really help you work this out.” He told you on your way out.
As you left his office, you felt like everyone knew what you had just done. But for now, it was just a secret for you and your therapist, Joel.

He’s reading on the sofa with a velvet blanket draped across his legs.
A classic literature book in his hands, reading glasses sitting on the edge his nose; his face is relaxed.
No unnecessary creases in his forehead, no frown stitched onto this lips. Just cool, calm and collected.
The sun peeks out from the blinds and shines its rays on his side profile, adding a soft glow to his already gentle face.
His cocoa eyes look like pools of honey now, you can almost taste the sweetness swirling around in them.
His skin looks cleared from any blemishes, only the creases along his eyes and smile lines remain.
It adds to his personality, you think.
His face is shaped by the turmoils of life and are visible by those whose trials and tribulations leave a similar mark.
His nose is Greek-like and you understand the appeal of bigger than average noses.
He’s just reading but the atmosphere he’s created adds to his essence. He’s just reading and yet, he’s so handsome.
How did you get here? So down bad, I mean.
Maybe it’s his intelligence that does it for you.
You love a guy who knows his stuff and nobody reads classic literature anymore, let alone read.
Steven has always been a curious mind. His thirst for knowledge could only be quenched by more.
He loves learning and sharing what he’s acquired with you, no matter you know the concepts of the topic or not.
He’s passionate, eloquent, and just so fucking brilliant. He just happens to know… everything.
You think he’s the modern day Library of Alexandria.
“Did you need somethin’, love?”
Steven blinks up at you, his last page bookmarked.
He uses the bookmark you made him with the perfume you wore to your first date spritzed on top before laminating it.
You’re a deer in headlights, nervous you’d been caught drooling over how good he looked just sitting there all comfortable and indulging in what he loves.
“Hm? Oh- uhh, nope. Nothing! I’m good, everything’s good.”
You smile brightly and hope he believes it.
He nods once, a bit skeptical but drops it.
“Alright.”
You and Marc are grocery shopping.
He decided to drive so you let him, but then as you went to grab the cart; he beat you to that as well.
You don’t question it because you secretly admire how he wants to do everything for you. You want to see how far he’s willing to go.
Is that toxic?
You’re in the spices aisle, trying to remember if you need to stock up or just replace some items altogether.
“We need paprika and cinnamon, and we should also buy another can of salt since we’re about three quarters down.”
Your lips are parted in awe and your eyebrows are drawn together at his admirable eye for detail.
“How did you..?”
He pulls out a crumpled up little piece of paper, visibly torn out of a small journal or something.
He gives it you and you skim through. Sure enough, you find the 3 items he stated with little anecdotes among other items.
“Did you memorize this?” You ask with your mouth forming a slight smile.
He’s checking out the prices on paprika.
“Yeah.”
He’s so nonchalant dreadhead with his response but it means everything to you.
He finds a couple of small containers at a reasonable price and drops them into the cart.
You see 15 different things on there and he has them all memorized. For you.
“Take my breath away~”
That he has.
You’re having a movie-moment right now. Granted, at a Walmart, but their speakers are doing you so much justice.
It’s the perfect song to play in the background during the perfect moment.
It’s like he’s in slow-motion with his hand sweeping back some of his inky, shiny curls.
His eyes blink towards you and you see his lips moving but you can’t hear anything. It’s muffled, like you’re underwater.
But like all great things, it comes to an end quite abruptly.
He calls your name with a wave of his hand in front of your face to catch your attention.
*record scratch*
“Y/n? Did you hear me?”
“Uh- what, huh?” You blink profusely as you blabber.
Marc takes in your stunned expression but continues.
“I was asking if we should get that juice you really like. It’s not on the list, but you ran out of it a while ago.”
Your dry mouth and shameless staring becomes apparent to you. You clear your throat in an to speak.
“Uhh, yeah. Sure.” You mumble before coughing lightly.
You turn away and fly speed-walk to the juice, not daring to turn around and see your man glancing at your peculiarity.
"Hey, Y/n?"
"Hmm?"
You're currently painting your nails after not indulging in the art for a while. You’re cure them under the UV light while your lover asks for your opinion.
“Which one looks better.”
You look up at Steven’s ask and almost drop your jaw.
He’s wearing a black button up with the first few buttons open, revealing the smooth, tan skin on his built body.
He wears a lot of loose clothing but this button up was more fitted. The material stretched slightly around his biceps when he went close the two buttons at the cuff of the sleeves.
“Mhm.” You don’t trust your voice right now.
“Just ‘mhm’?”
You nod your head and gulp harshly when you see him turn to examine himself in the mirror.
The back.
His broad, firm, muscly back is hidden under the taut, cotton material and you can’t look away when he fixes a tie to compliment the shirt.
He’s muttering something you can’t bring yourself to focus on and don’t realize it was a question.
“Love? Hello?”
“Huh-? What happened?”
His brows are furrowed in a quizzical manner.
“Oh! Uhh, yeah. This is good, looks uh… nice. Great! Wear that one.” You smile hoping you haven’t given yourself away.
Steven frowns and comes towards you. He caps the nail polish and sets it aside along with the UV light.
“Are you alright?” He asks gently.
“Yeah! I’m alright, why wouldn’t I be?”
He tilts his head slightly and maintains eye contact with you.
You’re still aware of him wearing the shirt and the revealing skin atop his torso, creating space for something better beyond imagination.
The sight is too much, it makes you want to kiss him till you can’t, and then some.
His hands engulf yours and you have no choice but to look at him, nervous yet giddy inside.
“You can tell me, Y/n. Have I done something-?”
You go against your mind and kiss him.
It’s a clash of tongue and teeth, a messy fight for lips and the desperate result of fighting temptation.
Steven is surprised and while he does love kissing you, he’s completely befuddled.
“Love, wait-”
“No.”
You go back to indulging yourself and almost squeal in excitement when he grabs your waist to pull you closer when you feel him change.
The nervous yet giddy feeling comes back tenfold when the man you see is the constant object of your desires.
His eyes are so expressive, they have a language of their own.
You’re a bit breathless from a few moments ago.
“What’s gotten into you?” He’s amused but intrigued.
You shrug, a bit annoyed with the interruptions.
“I can’t just kiss my man whenever I want to?”
Marc’s eyebrows jump a bit at this and he feels a sense of pride in his heart when you remind him of being your man.
“You can.” He says simply.
You don’t know what he’s playing at when he’s the best at having a poker face.
“But..?”
He stares at you for a moment and sighs.
“You’re acting… different.”
Busted.
“Ever since that time Steven caught you staring at him-”
Fuck.
You really thought you nailed that, huh.
“-you’ve been off. I clocked it at Walmart when you were staring at me all Disney princess-like.”
That makes you feel threatened and touched.
“Aww wait that’s so cute- wait. Did you just use ‘clocked’ in a sentence unironically?”
He gets whiplash from your undivided attention switching sides due to his discovery.
“That’s what you’re choosing to focus on? Seriously?”
To be fair, you do have a bit (a lot) of brain rot.
“We need to ban you from TikTok.” He’s decides.
“They already tried that, silly.”
It’s fun sidetracking but anything to distract him for as long as possible before he forgets the true purpose of the conversation.
Unfortunately, he’s a smart cookie.
Marc narrows his eyes at you suspiciously. “I know what you’re doing.”
Okay, just stay calm.
“What, talking?”
A lazy smirk drapes over his features and he’s confident in himself.
“You know what.”
His deep, baritone voice makes an appearance in the form of a murmur and you’re weak.
He tilts his head in that way which makes you wonder what’s really going on in his head and it’s all mind games!
You’re stuck between the cycle of admitting what’s up or lying and waiting to be caught again.
The suspense is killing you and you can’t take the embarrassment anymore.
Shamefully, you come clean.
You sigh with your head down, your eyes land on your painted and now dry nails.
“It’s you.”
“What’s me?”
You look at him and explain.
“It’s just, you’re too…”
You try to find the right word to best describe your explanation but fall short when you realize there’s really no other way around it.
“Perfect.”
Marc is yet again amused, but confused.
“I’m... too perfect?”
You groan in frustration.
“Yes! You and Steven are too perfect. Like, the other day, he was literally just reading and I thought he was the most smart, and sexy, beautiful person ever.”
Steven makes a short-lived appearance to show his thanks.
“You really think that?” He shyly asks.
You smile. “Of course I do.”
“And what about me?” Marc chimes.
“I think you’re cocky. I give you full marks for that.” You muse.
He rolls his eyes and you hold the urge to say ‘sassy’.
“I thought you were the man for me when you made a list and memorized it just for me.”
Your confession is heartfelt and doesn’t fall upon deaf ears.
Marc’s lip part in awe and his eyes shine with appreciation.
“I also thought it was hot when you grabbed the keys and cart before I could even think about it.”
He raises an eyebrow at that.
“It was hot?”
You shrug, not knowing he’s just trying to boost his own ego.
“Yeah. I like it when you take initiative.”
He nods to himself, pondering about what else he takes charge in that attracts you.
“So, what about in the bedroom?”
You look up at the ceiling and can’t believe you walked into that.
“You really know how to suck the fun out of everything, don’t you.”
He wiggles his eyebrows at you suggestively and you laugh at the stupid notion.
Yeah, you deem he’s the one for you.

CHAPTER ONE: CURSED
You’d arrived at the town of Hornnewle a few hours ago, and the train was slow but scenic. Pulling out your phone, you huffed at the walk from here to the town’s library. You’d already checked in at your motel, which was slightly rundown, but the town itself had a sort of charm. It wasn’t exactly charming in a touristy way; something heavier hung in the air. You watched as crows gathered by the streetlights, beaks twisted at an unseen force.
Must have found something shiny.
The town looked like a snapshot of a horror film, paused mid-breath. Victorian buildings lined the misty streets, which reminded you of Gotham City from the comics. You snorted a bit at the thought. Somehow, the weather was warm, but the city seemed slightly shrouded in darkness. You admired the weird charm and happily walked towards your destination. It was getting closer and closer until you saw the wooden sign hanging from the building. It bore a gothic style font, and looked as if it had never been replaced in the past fifty years.
You opened the creaky door, and the bell rang loudly. Your digits ran through your hair, startled, you tried to make yourself smaller. A woman who looked to be in her 70s made eye contact with you, and her wrinkled face offered you a small smile. You gave her a nod and hurried inside, light on your feet. You gripped your satchel and mouth parted to speak— the library, however, had other plans. You looked around in awe at the rustic place. A warm, red carpeted floor, walls littered with books, and the smell of incense and books filled your nose.
“Feels like home, right? I figure you’re not from here.” She begins, offering her hand up for a greeting. Your fingers hesitantly move towards hers, giving her a handshake feeling the cool metal from her ring touch your skin.
“How’d you guess?” You sheepishly smile. Her orbs run up and down your form, surveying you, not just observing.
“I’ve lived here long enough to know everyone in the town,” She chuckles, and you watch her pink lips curl up sweetly. “So I know a new face when I see one!” she shrugs. She looks to be average height, and her skin is a pale colour, her gray hair falling in loose strands surrounding her clavicle.
“Well, I need some help finding a book, I’m doing some research…” You start, you cannot exactly reveal the true nature of your visit, because you do technically intend to trespass on barred land. You pretend to be in thought and furrow your brows.
“I’m doing a research project for school about the haunted place here called Maledictus.” You query with your hand on your chin.
Her face scrunches at your request.
“You came all the way here for that book?” She confirms. Her eyes glaze over ever so slightly, you notice and shift in your spot.
“That place is barred in this town, though I imagine if you researched, you already know that, it is the only book on the matter, despite having a past reputation in the province.” She thinks and meets your eyes before sighing,
She nods her head towards an aisle in the back.
“It's on the back wall. I hope you do well on your research project.” She smiled, twisting the ring on her finger. You notice an insignia on it and squint at it before nodding and heading to the back wall.
Dragging your digits against the spines of the books lining the walls, reverence settles itself into your chest. You wished you could capture this moment in a painting, seal it away, and never drown in the feeling of loneliness again. Your fingers stop once they hit the book you’ve been searching for. A giddy feeling bubbles up in your chest, and you push it down gently.
Grabbing the book, you step to the front of the store, the lady's eyes settle onto you, and she smiles, waving you farewell. You leave the mystic library with a huff as you run towards the nearest cafe you can find. The feeling of the book grasped between your fingers, blooming a feeling in your chest again, you don’t push it down this time.
Your digits greedily prod at the book as you find a seat to settle into. Your skin is digging into the gaps between the wood seat, but you haven’t a care in the world.
As you iris’s skim over the pages, your first order of business is seeking the location of the Maledictus. You read through a few words of warning, all things you’ve read before, nothing seemingly out of the ordinary.
There it is.
The location, just on the outskirts of the main square, threaded deep into the forest, like a secret waiting to be revealed. You hum in contentment, scratching at the nape of your neck. You rise to your feet, slightly tender from the walking you’ve been doing. You loosely mapped out the path in your head and decided to persevere before it gets too dark.
Your boots crunch into the sticks and leaves on the path to the forest, it has a cavernous aspect to it that you find oddly comforting. You continue skimming through the pages, trying to detect any mentions of relics and such. You bite your lip in focus as you walk, the book perched in your hands. You stop in your tracks as you finally find something.
Relics! You hold back a shit-eating grin before humming in contentment and trekking forward. The photos are faded, but clear enough to make out minor details; there are many, they look dipped in gold, edges faded from standing the test of time. Ornate details catch your eye, carved neatly into them. Some pots, some rings and more. Before you know it, you’ve reached the point in the book where it details each—
You’re cut off by the sound of your head crashing into a tree. You grunt in pain, the book shielding your sternum from the same fate as your head—you cradle your head in response, feeling for any sign of blood. You had not paid any mind to the world around you as you ventured deeper into the forest—that was a mistake. You took a second to survey your surroundings, and that’s when you saw it.
The building was tenebrous, gloomy like death encapsulated. It stood tall in the forest; a copious amount of cautious tape surrounded the exterior, in your head, it was practically ushering you inside.
It was a deep shade of brown, a fractured sort of building, oozing miasma. It loomed above you, with a mansion-like stature. You hesitated before shutting the book in your grip, jaw tightening in eagerness to trespass. You tucked the book gently into your satchel before your digits tapped the caution tape. You threaded yourself through the tape like a needle, eventually landing in front of the door.
“That’s enough hesitating, I’m heading inside.” You mused.
The door creaked open, as a rickety groan escaped the hinges. It was surprisingly orderly. As much as a place this ancient could be. It had rickety flooring, sure, but it held a timeless design inside. You took note of the cracked cornices and cobwebs; no matter how decent it was, it was still ancient. With it came a must in the air—a scent that felt decrepit, but also as if someone had inhabited this place recently. Like something or someone had been here.
That made the corners of your mouth twitch.
Your eyes raked over your surroundings as you stepped further into the place, shutting the door behind you. It’s you and a dwelling etched in time and memories, said to bear a curse. You wouldn’t trade that for anything else. You spent your time delicately surveying the place, picking up items that matched the photographs in the book you had tucked away. It felt precious, a secret only you got to keep.
Not long after, you found your feet heading towards the billowing staircase, your fingers nimbly traced over the cracked wood as you made your way deeper into the stilled mansion. A darkness loomed around you, but you were no stranger to feelings like those. When you reached the top of the creaky steps, you made your way into a room on the far left of the gloomy hallway.
Your breath hitched in your throat when you entered. The room reeked of age, old, rotted pages from a book and decaying flowers. The floorboards screaming beneath your feet, the sound thrumming in your eardrum like a warning. You pressed onwards into the large room, eyes landing on the stained mullions, the curtains drawn back as if inviting a fresh breath into the carcass of a room.
That’s when something glinted from the corner of your eye, it pulled your gaze like a magnet. Your feet padded across the room, measuring your steps as you went to grasp it, ignoring everything in your stomach that twisted and furled at the creaking in the floorboard.
You grasped it—before—
C R E A K
The floor crooned beneath you and gave out, your weight pulling you down, crashing through the rotted ceiling of the floors beneath you. A sickening feeling churned in your stomach as you fell through not one, not two, but five dark stories. Your life flashed before your eyes as you desperately clawed at the stale air for something to hold onto, but to no avail. The splinters from the decayed board sharply dig into your skin as you fall.
Your body then smashed onto what felt like solid concrete, nearly bouncing from the impact, your head collided with the ground with a deafening crack, your eyes watering as your breath dies in your throat. You feel warmth seeping out of your head, you’re sure it’s your blood, leaking from your cracked skull, you feel panic rise in your chest, your heart humming at a pace far too fast to be normal.
Your eyes wander down weakly to the relic in your hand. It looks untouched from the fall, pristine and shiny still. It looks like an angel, wings delicately curved in on itself. Your eyes wander around it, and you notice something carved into it.
An insignia, huh, that looks just like the one the librarian had on her ring.
The thought fades away as you feel the sudden urge to sleep, your body is heavy and lies in a pool of your blood, you swear you can see the relic in your hand glow before your eyes droop shut, for eternity.
For some odd reason, you feel yourself waking up in a field of green grass, as fresh as could be. A TV was placed in the middle of the field, which was extremely out of place. Your eyebrows scrunch as the sun's rays dilate across your skin.
The TV flickers on, and you watch as the channel plays—
Invincible?
A voice suddenly sounds from behind you.
“Why hello there, it seems you’ve made it.”
Made it?
Where?

Replaced MC AU/AU - V.1 - P.1
Characters: demon brothers, Diavolo, fem!MC and high school crush! male! NES (MC x NES)
Main Masterlist
Replaced MC AU/AU Masterlist (check the other versions and learn more about the NESs!)
Intro (gn!reader)
CW: unrequited love, rejection, insecure demons, i refuse to let MC be a doormat, lesson 16 mentioned, my interpretations of the pacts, suggestive (kinda? i dont know), MC is down bad for NES, golden retriever NES, both MC and NES are in their 20s
There were two songs during the writing of this part: Rock Lobster and Girl With One Eye; do with that information what you will
.
Diavolo liked NES. What a fine addition to the program he was! Invested in his studies, clearly interested in the new world he had been suddenly thrown to and cooperative as an advisor whenever MC was occupied with other matters. Charismatic, polite and respectful, still acting with naiveness, but quickly adapting to his surroundings.
No wonder MC used to be in love with him.
That was a surprise for everyone, although he’d be lying if he said it was a pleasant one. Solomon had laughed at the turn of events, stating how lucky MC was finding NES years later. In hell, no less! And while that made everything easier in terms of getting to know the Devildom from a familiar face, seeing MC smile with that bashfulness whenever she crossed paths with NES wasn’t something none of them were keen on.
Sending him to Purgatory Hall despite MC’s protests was the obvious choice. The House of Lamentation was already crowded and having MC share her room was both unnecessary and unfair; at least, that’s what Lucifer said.
Both of the angels’ and Solomon’s reports were as positive as they could be. Luke thoroughly enjoyed baking with him, Simeon described his company as delightful and the sorcerer was ecstatic when he announced that NES tried every single one of his dishes, which just proved his bravery and resilience.
Diavolo liked NES, yes, but he’d like him even more if MC liked him a little less.
.
.
“So those are pacts?”
MC stared at NES, mouth dry and words stuck in her throat. She needed to blink, but she didn’t know how to do that without looking weird. Of course NES’s eyes had to look like that under the light of the fireplace.
“MC?”
“Yes?”
He laughed and her heart skipped a beat. There wasn’t an ounce of malice in his voice, making her wish his soft smile was born out of the intimate bubble encasing them. If she focused enough, she could swear NES had a blush in his cheeks. If only that wasn’t due to the heat.
“The pacts, MC”
“Oh, yeah”
Could the earth swallow her if she was already in hell?
“They’re bonds I share with the brothers. Kinda like…”
She didn’t know what to say then. That she could command the brothers and they had no other choice but to obey her? He'd discover the true meaning of the pacts if he asked the right people, mainly Solomon, but it still seemed like a fact too vulnerable to share.
“It means she’s part of the family” a voice behind them intervened. “That she belongs with us”
MC jumped and turned around at lightning speed, drowning in embarrassment at the realization that she’d completely forgotten about Satan’s presence in the library. However, something in his words irked her mind. Did he want to say that? Or rather that she belonged to them?
“That’s nice, right?”
She looked at NES, who was smiling despite the heavy silence in the air. Satan scoffed, no doubt in a mocking tone, and MC wondered with sudden ire how far she could go.
“Well, these are just two of them”
Mammon’s, covering the tip of her fingers in pure black with golden swirls; and Beel’s, dripping out of her mouth down the length of her throat.
“And where are the others? They look really cool!”
“Come closer, I’ll show you Satan’s”
Said demon snapped his book close, turning around with glaring eyes. MC ignored him and opened her mouth, letting herself enjoy NES’s presence so close to her body. There was ink in her tongue, drawing hard edges in the shape of a very elaborated arrow. NES stared at it in amazement, unconsciously grabbing MC’s chin and moving it side to side, up and down, to admire the tattoo better.
“Do you want to see the others?”
NES took his hand away, discreetly looking at Satan out of the corner of his eye.
“Would you…?”
“I don’t think that’s necessary”
The blond glared at them and MC stared him down with a silent warning.
“I don’t think that’s your decision to make”
The tension was thick once again and MC sighed when NES looked away in awkwardness, but she couldn’t let Satan spoil what she wanted to be a nice date.
“Come with me to my room, NES, I’ll show you the rest of them”
He didn’t need any reassurance, taking his DDD and MC’s blanket with him before following her out of the room.
The fireplace was still lit, but Satan felt unusually cold.
.
.
“She invited him to her room?!” Asmo clutched his chest before covering his annoyance in fake saccharine words. “How daring!”
“Lucifer will be furious!” cried Levi trying not to drop his DDD in his drink, finally letting it rest on the table and keeping his trembling hands inside his pockets.
“Why didn’t you stop them?”
Satan looked at Mammon in disbelief, sneering at his brother’s furious expression.
“Do you really think I didn’t want to? She wasn’t exactly happy with me at the moment!”
“Well, no wonder! You cock-blocked her!”
Levi screeched at Asmo with a horrified look in his face, tears already in his eyes and fingers fidgeting with his jacket’s zipper.
“She’s raising their intimacy levels at ultimate speed! She’s taking the shortcut! There’s no way a yucky disgusting otaku could compete with that!”
Asmo rolled his eyes, patting the sobering demon’s back.
“None of us can compete with that, Levi”
Everyone looked at Mammon in surprise, but he was staring at his fingers, completely defeated.
“As much as it pains me to say this, Mammon is right”
“Oi! Have some respect for your older brother!”
“Shut up, you moron! I’m taking your side” speaked Asmo once again. He sighed and crossed his arms, hugging himself with sadness. “MC already made her choice. The only thing we can do is slow the process”
“Then we’ll do that”
Satan seemed determined, rejecting Mammon’s supporting touch when he leaned over his chair to grasp his arm. He got up and started to grab his things, stopping only when he heard Levi’s nervous voice.
“She’s already mad at you, Satan. Like… bosslike mad at you.”
“Do you really want to risk that?”
He refused to meet his brothers’ eyes, nor their fear, their empathy or their dejectedness. Without saying another word, he stepped out of Café Lament and set foot to the House of Lamentation.
.
.
MC loved the brothers. They’d become family, even with the death threats, the broken wall and the murder. They knew what she liked to do and eat and wear and they were more than happy to indulge in her wishes.
But if they interrupted her time with NES one more time, so help me God, she’d give Hell a whole new meaning.
First it was Satan, sitting next to her in every class and cutting every attempt at a conversation with NES short in the name of a proper education. Then followed Belphie, who slept on the floor by her bedroom door, locking her inside and forcing her to jump out of the window, which gave everyone a heart attack.
Lucifer mildly scolded them for that, stating himself above the poor behavior they were displaying, but still found multiple reasons for MC to be in his office for hours on end. Same as Levi, who pulled three all-nighters in a row and left her half-dead for a week.
Mammon and Beel had been more subtle, both inviting her to movie nights, cooking sessions and shopping sprees. She only put a stop to all of the nonsense when Mammon tried to intercept her when she was on her way to a date with NES, excusing himself with a poor idiotic story about some angry witches.
Strangely, the only one not to have a stupid scheme against her crush was Asmo. She almost expected him to be the most obvious about it, but nothing happened. He still did her nails and he helped her choose her outfits whenever she had a date with NES, albeit with a harsher critical attitude.
He quickly became the nicest one to be around and she had no qualms in saying so.
“Oh, MC! You always know how to make me happy!”
“But it is true! I don’t know what’s wrong with the others! They’ve been acting so weird…”
Asmo stopped rummaging through her closet, turning around to look at her with an unamused expression. He looked tired.
“Honey… Surely you know. You must know”
They stayed in silence for a few seconds, both knowing that MC knew what he was talking about. All seven brothers had been interested in her to some extent, claiming ownership over her soul on more than one occasion, and this was the first time she’d rejected all those statements in such an obvious way.
“We miss you, MC”
Not the whole truth, but something neither of them could deny.
“I miss you too”, she assured him.
She could’ve left it at that, ending the raw, vulnerable talk in a positive tone. Alas, things weren’t always that easy.
“But I like him. So, so much”
MC didn’t want to cry, but she was close. The dejection in Asmo’s eyes lasted long enough for her to almost regret knowing NES for so many years. In the end, he hid himself amongst her pile of clothes and continued looking for a good outfit.
“I’ll find time for you, I swear. For all of you”
Asmo nodded without looking at her, ending the conversation when he threw some clothes in her direction and waited for the mandatory catwalk.
It wouldn’t be enough, but it was the best the brothers could ever get. After all, if someone deserved to be happy and in love, it was her.

i request thy assistance. urgently.. needeth thee. is there any way thou can deliver some headcanons of what Mr. Reca would be like if his partner were studying for an extensive period of time and needed some loving after it?
much appreciated!
A/n: here you go bbg, I hope this is good enough, mwah! First time writing Reca, so I apologize if this is too short or a bit ooc. Thank you for the request.
Contents: Mr. Reca x GN reader, comfort fluff, not proof-read
-Mr. Reca is no stranger to burning the midnight oil as he has done it in the past himself more times than he cares to count. Often times this would be a result of him indulging a bit too much in his current project and forgetting about the passage of time, other times it was simply a necessity to get something done before the due date
-But he is truly not the biggest subscriber to seeing you burning yourself away. He’d click his tongue when he so much as senses the upcoming exams on your end, his usually cheshire smile replaced by an unamused frown.
-It distracts you so much from the wonders of life - and takes you away from him of course, how dare the exams do such a thing, how can those professors demand so much smh..
-This is too out of character.
-If he could clap his clapper board to re-do this entire segment of your life and trade it for something better and more easy on your mind and body, he would. But alas..
-He truly does admire your perseverance in the field, even with all the trials and tribulations you passed to get to where you are now. Don’t think for a second that he ever forgot; even the tiniest details cannot escape his memory. If his mind was a palace, he’d have a special room, a library, made just for the memories of you. Everything and anything related to you
-While he is busy himself he still feels the shift in the relationship - aka the lack of time spent together and while he doesn’t like it, he won’t distract you from it unless it is to check up on you or if you really burnt away the day at your books.
-While he is not the best at cooking a good meal for you, he will clean up the house while you’re studying, set the table up and clean after you two eat since this guy is gonna order your favorite meal and drinks and make sure you get some good nutrients and hydration in you. He can make simple things…like tea and coffee and maybe some scrambled eggs but honestly that is not good enough for your current situation.
-He would make you tea before bed - something he also makes you do on time. He is not against using his memokeeper magic to make you come to bed sooner. At times he doesn’t even have to use that, he’d just move the hands on the big clock to make it seem as if hours passed and you’re just too tired to check your phone until you’re tucked away in his arms in bed.
-If it is still early in the evening he does love to talk to you to pull you out of your study cave mood. Sometimes he can go on tangents about all the elements needed in preparation of a film or a certain aspect that makes a good character and why, other times he tells you about what happened on set last time, his frustrations and such all while having these very animated movements and gestures with his arms or even legs sometimes. He cannot sit still. But if he sees that his yapping is overwhelming you he knows to tone it down to a softer language and volume, just asking you simple questions if you’d like to cuddle or what you’d like to eat.
-He’d drag you over to him, tenderly by the arm and have you lay your head in his lap, cooing softly at how sweet you look like that while his hand goes to smooth through your hair. He would tease you if you were in any better spirits but he just smiles and watches how your lashes flutter shut, your cheeks lightly dusted with blush.
-Reca is very.. colorful with his words and quite creative, so besides the endless list of pet names, some of which are lowkey ridiculous, he is a pro at giving you encouraging words. He can be quite smug when he sees the effect he has on you
-Would definitely talk to you until you fall asleep too, whispering sweet nothings into the top of your head as his hand runs up and down your back, lulling you to sleep.

Roomies
Did the "random thought" bug bite me again? Always. Here's the result this time: The responsibilities each of the Olympians would have if they lived together in modern days.
Athena - She stocks up their personal library (think Beauty and the Beast, but times 1000). It's her job to make sure that the books are in proper order and all the best selections are here. Is this a real responsibility? Debatable. Did it exist before she suggested it? No, but at least the Olympians have everything from non-fiction to the best fantasies to read.
Ares - He's in charge of taking out the trash because he drew the short straw and putting up shelves because he wanted that one. It's fun for him to hammer in the nails. Now, the walls are covered in more shelves than they could ever need and the halls are filled with his mildly diabolical laughter as he hammers.
Demeter - She keeps the fridge and pantry filled. They have literally never been empty. Every time someone uses up one of the foods, it's replaced. The others are genuinely unsure how she does this and will randomly test it out, just to find that the food is in there again. They think she's particularly magical.
Zeus - He's in charge of the electricity. If they have a power outage, all eyes are on him. They don't ever need an electricity bill or to charge phones. They just put the phones on him when he's sleeping so that he won't snoop through their stuff (Yes, they have phone locks, but he can probably find a way to get past those).
Hermes - Sweep and vacuum duty. Everyone has to leave while he does this. He's flying around so fast that he'd give the healthiest immortal asthma with all the dust he kicks up. The nice part for him is that he can be done in a matter of seconds.
Hephaestus - He's in charge of building chairs anything the home needs. The computers, sofas, tables, TVs, etc. are all built by him. Oddly enough, they all buy their beds elsewhere. He's not sure why they don't trust him to build those too. It's not like he'd make it a trap or something :p.
Hera - She makes sure everyone has family dinner together. This might seem like an easy task, but it's probably the hardest. No one wants to do this. You have sets of siblings who will eat together and that is it. She will go so far as to lasso the younger immortals, dragging them to the dining room kicking and screaming. It's not pretty.
Poseidon - He cleans the bathrooms. He finds it sort of gross, but as soon as the others remembered that he could control water, that was a done deal. When he's in a bad mood, he purposely does it badly, then he gets glared at enough and fixes it. One day, he might learn to just do it right the 1st time.
Artemis - She's in charge of getting the animals to mount on the shelves. It's also not a responsibility anyone planned on her having, but she volunteered and ran off before they could stop her. They just deal with it now. They like it better when she brings back meat for them to eat.
Apollo - He makes sure that all the safety measures are taken care of. He's got the first aid kit FILLED. It's a little concerning. His siblings swear that he's waiting for them to get a limb ripped off. He also has fire extinguishers and everything else. They don't know if he's prepared because he wants to be or because he knows something they don't.
Hestia - She's the cook. Nobody could pull her away from the oven if they wanted and the food's great, so they don't want to. The home always smells like baked goods. The others love her so much because of this. She also lets them sneak and be taste testers whenever they like.
Hades - He pays the bills. He's filthy rich, so the others just sort of gave him pleading eyes and he caved. The poor guy barely even lives here, but he's still paying the mortgage, etc. (not electricity bill though!). The few times he comes to visit and check in, he wonders how the building is still standing.
Dionysus - Wine cellar duty. That and wet bar mixologist. He comes up with new drinks for the others and regularly sees how much they can handle before just being completely out of it. He finally got in enough trouble for doing this that he makes slightly less potent drinks now.
Aphrodite - Ambiance manager. She wasn't supposed to be a live-in girlfriend, but now she is and won't leave. The others don't mind, though. She puts out nice flowers, paints the walls, and makes sure the place looks beautiful.
(Let me know if you like the sound of this! If my upcoming Greek comedy book does well, I might release a continuation where there's a short story with this being a real thing.)

You thought your boys were being dramatic when they first told you about their heats.
At first, you thought it was a joke they were playing on you. You were new to the lycanthrope world, you weren’t sure of the logistics and there wasn’t exactly a ‘werewolves for dummies’ book you could check out in the library. You thought maybe this was just your boyfriends pulling your leg to have some fun.
When other sources confirmed it was real, you thought they were exaggerating the whole thing to gain some sympathy points. Max had a tendency to sometimes dramatice stuff and Daniel usually went along with it because he thought it was funny. And truthfully, you just assumed that was at play here.
But then you saw it and realised they hadn’t prepared you enough.
The only good thing was that for as long as you had been with the boys, their heats have never once matched up. One was always before the other and it meant you usually had a few days in between to rest before you dealt with the next shift. It felt like the universe was on your side.
Until this month.
You hadn’t even noticed their heats moving closer and closer together. It hadn’t even crossed your mind as a possibility. But then suddenly you were waking up to one boy pawing at your tits and the other one trying to tug your pyjama shorts down your legs and you realised just what you were in for for the next week.
They were fucking relentless. Somehow the possessive nature and horniness combined to make some weird, twisted competition between them both to be the one to make you feel the best. No matter where you were or what you were doing, one of the boys was always on you.
And sometimes they both were.
“Oh fuck,” you let out a moan as you felt Daniel press up behind you, warm and comforting and overwhelming all at once. You could only let your head roll back as his face nuzzled into the crook of your neck, a small growl vibrating across your skin. “I thought I banned you both from the shower.”
“But you smell so nice,” Max whined as he nosed your jaw, his hand tracing down your body before hiking your leg up around his waist. “And you were all alone. S’not nice.”
“We just wanna take care of you, darlin’,” Daniel murmured as his teeth scraped along a sensitive spot on the base of your neck that made you whine out loud.
“You both are fucking relentless,” you moaned out, your nails digging into Max’s shoulders when the head of his cock teased your poor, used cunt. “You’re gonna fucking break me.”
“Never, schat,” Max murmured before he lifted his head, his lips tracing over yours and you could have whined when he didn’t kiss you right away. “Just gonna keep you nice and full, remember who you belong to.”
“And you’re all ours, honey,” Daniel whispered from behind, his lips brushing against your ear as his hands began to explore your body. You let out a choked noise of surprise when his fingers brushed against your other hole, teasing you as you whimpered at the thought. “Every single part of you.”
“Please,” you begged as the water cascaded down onto the three of you, hot and fast and adding to the burning need you had to have both of your boys inside you. “Shit, please.”
“Look at you,” Max cooed as he slowly thrusted into you. “S’like you’re in heat with us, just as desperate.”
Daniel’s free hand groped and squeezed your tits as his fingers slowly worked into your other entrance. “Because she’s a perfect match for us, baby. She’s our mate.”
“Our mate,” Max growled as he nuzzled his face into your neck, listening to your racing heart as they spread you open. “Ours.”
“Yours,” you cried out when Daniel pulled his fingers out, only to be replaced with the head of his cock teasing your whole. “All yours. Just yours.”
“Atta girl,” Daniel cooed softly when you let out a sob, his arms winding around you as he sunk into your ass, until they were both bottomed inside you and pressed against each other. “Such a good girl for us.”
“So good,” Max praised with a kiss pressed against your pulse point.
“Please,” you whispered, your nails leaving dents in Max’s skin but you didn’t think he would care. “Move. Use me. Fuck me. Fill me up. Pleasepleasepleaseplease—”
“Shhh, don’t need to cry,” Daniel cooed, something soft but patronising in his voice as he slowly pulled out before thrusting back in. “Gonna take such good care of our pretty mate. Just gotta trust us, darlin’.”

Shhh!! It's a Library (mod)
27 Sept Update: Found a better shushing sound so I replaced with that. Also added ITUNs for the non computer interactions. Thanks to @cs2te for the Brazilian Portuguese translation! Redownload (if you want these updates) at the link below.
(Note: This mod uses the Ticket Machine animations for the kiosk. If you don't have it, you can download it here. Honestly, it's not that important and without it, your Sim will just stand in front of the machine for a second, that's it)
I'm officially in my Streets era. I'm building out all the community lots in my town so you're going to be seeing a lot of community/town related stuff from me for the next few months. My Sims are trying to be outside!
First up! This is a small library mod that allows you to search for books at the library using this gorgeous kiosk object from @aroundthesims. If the book is in the library, it tells you where they are by panning the camera to the bookshelf that has the book and putting a blue outline around it for 10 Sim minutes. Pretty simple.
Features:
Browse Catalog… pulls up all books in the library
Search by… Category | Title | Author - pulls up any book that matches your search entry
Request a Book to Order - allows you to add more books to the library.
You can only order the types of books that are allowed in community libraries so no books that are destroyed after you finish reading them (e.g. recipes, song compositions) and no academic textbooks.
You can order written books, including articles, as well as books from other worlds (e.g. Shang Simla, etc) though for the latter, there is a §35 “overseas shipping cost” added to order these books.
Once you order a book, the mod will check whether the library has enough money to purchase it and then place the order.
Ordered books are added to the library at 8am the next day and you’ll receive a notification that the books have been added.
Library Funding
In order to pay for the books ordered, library kiosks have a budget. Every kiosk, upon creation, comes with a §250 budget.
The library budget is the total amount of funds in all kiosks on the lot. Costs are deducted from individual kiosks even if that specific kiosk doesn't have enough money for the book so long as the library budget has enough money.
Support your Local Library
Sims can donate books (up to 3 books at a time) to the library using the book donation bin. The bin must be placed on the library lot (either outside or inside) and you need to have books in your inventory. Your Sim will get 500 Lifetime Happiness points for every book donated. (this is related to another mod that I’m working on. More on that at a later date!)
There is also a computer interaction that lets you donate money to the library. Sims that donate §2500 or more will get a 4-hour charitable moodlet. Donations are added to the library budget.
Finally, Bookworms and Proper Sims can shush other Sims at the library. Once shushed, all Sims in the same room doing social interactions or playing music instruments will stop. (You'll find, like in real life, people quickly go back to doing what they're doing so it's kind of useless but it was a low lift so I kept it in). If someone can think of a good "shushing" sound from the game, let me know!
Credits/Thanks: Both credit and huge thanks go to @aroundthesims for creating this beautiful library set and the kiosk which I used as the main object. I did recategorize it to Misc Electronics instead of Sculptures. If you already have it in your game, you may need to remove it or you can just change the script to “Sims3.Gameplay.Objects.olomaya.LibraryStuff.Kiosk”. The donation bin is from Sketchfab created by TheLatestShit (that’s their name, thank you TLS!) and can be found in Misc Storage.
Read through everything below the cut before downloading please! Important instructions below!
Important things to note:
The kiosk must be placed on a counter. If it’s not, your sim will reset because they can only interact with it if it’s on a counter. If you are having issues with resetting, place it on an EA-made counter to confirm it’s not this issue first before you reach out for support. You can use OSMP counters provided they are cloned from a counter and place the kiosk on there and put it wherever you want (like I’ve done in my photo. the kiosk is actually on an OSMP counter, not the white table).
Pulling up the entire library catalog, depending on how many books you have on the lot, can take a few (or several) seconds. Or maybe it won’t, I play on a brick laptop so it does for me
Keyword searches are case sensitive so “raymundo” yields no results, but “Raymundo” will bring up the 85 copies of that 🤬 book that your library probably has
The search will only check books that are in bookshelves, it will ignore library books that have been taken out of the bookshelf and are being read or lying around.
Book requests and financial donations can only be made at public libraries and not privately-owned libraries. So if a Sim in your town owns the lot, these options won’t come up (it should be the owners’ responsibility to buy books). You can still donate books though.
You can have multiple kiosks on the lot. If you delete a kiosk, its funds (if it has any) will be transferred to any of the other kiosks on the lot so you don’t lose the money.
There is a debug interaction on the kiosk that allows you to check the library budget.
You can order one book at a time but there’s no limit to how many you can do in a day but once the books are delivered the next morning, the mod will check whether the library has enough money and will only order the books there is money for

Spying in the library
Moment: AzrielxOC Level Fluff Aurelia strolled through the library, her arms already loaded with more books than she could reasonably carry, and yet she kept scanning the shelves with greedy eyes. Back in the cosy sitting area she'd claimed, a towering stack of books and piles of loose papers sprawled across her table, evidence of a study session more ambitious than practical. She frowned slightly, noting the unusual quiet of the library; she'd hardly seen a priestess since she arrived. A strange, thoughtful calm settled over the aisles, and she couldn't help but wonder where they had disappeared to.
Then she felt it—another presence. Just on the other side of the bookcase. Aurelia paused, stiffening as she sensed it shifting with her, a figure moving in time with her own subtle steps. She took five measured steps backward, and the presence mirrored her. Then she took seven steps forward, and still, it remained, unrelenting and patient.
Between the cracks in the shelves, she caught a glimmer of hazel eyes, a flicker of mirth dancing within them. She stifled a laugh, shaking her head. Raising her arm, she reached two shelves above her head, plucking out two thick volumes to peer through the gap. There, on the other side, stood Azriel, eyes sparkling, as if this little game were entirely normal.
Shaking her head, she replaced the books. She heard the soft huff of his laughter, muffled by the wood and leather spines, and soon enough, Azriel's hand reached in on the other side, removing two books at her eye level. As she leaned forward, his face came into view, and he lowered himself slightly to meet her gaze.
"What are you doing here?" she asked, raising an eyebrow as she took in the amused smirk on his face.
Azriel didn't reply. He simply smirked, and a dark tendril of shadow slipped through the open space, its soft edges flicking toward her stack of books, snaking around to lift a few off the top with casual ease.
With a soft shake of her head, Aurelia crossed her arms, leaning slightly as Azriel rounded the bookcase and stepped into her aisle, standing directly across from her now.
He gestured to her stack of books, eyebrow raised. "I remember you never could take a reasonable amount of books. Some things don't change." His tone was light, but he extended his hand, offering to carry them for her.
Aurelia let out a half-smile, watching as his shadows continued to take up the task, lifting the weight off her arms and carefully arranging them in a neat pile by his side.
Aurelia raised an eyebrow, a slight smirk tugging at her lips. "Do you really have nothing better to do than spy on my reading habits?"
Azriel's expression didn't shift, but his eyes gleamed with something softer, more open than she'd expected. "I didn't come to spy on you," he said simply. "I thought I might join you."
The words caught her off guard, and she froze, her gaze instinctively flicking over his form, assessing him from head to toe as they began walking back toward the cluster of books she'd gathered earlier. She noted the familiar, worn-in training leathers, the soft edges where leather met skin. Her smirk returned as her suspicions took form.
"Running away, are we?" she accused, eyeing his attire with raised brows. "Hiding out in here with me when you're supposed to be working out with Cassian?"
Azriel's mouth tilted into a rare, fleeting smile as they continued down the quiet aisle. "Actually, I was with the priestesses today. Not Cassian."
That made her pause, a flicker of curiosity sparking in her eyes as she gestured to the unusually silent library. "Ah," she murmured, glancing around at the eerily empty shelves. "That would explain it. I was beginning to wonder why this place felt abandoned."
Azriel only gave a slight shrug, his shadows swirling just above his shoulders. "They're having a self-defence lesson this morning. I thought I'd come by afterward, check in on your... collection," he said, gesturing to the stack of books they approached.
Aurelia reached out to pick up one of the books from her towering stack, but her curiosity got the better of her. "Who's teaching today?" she asked, keeping her tone casual.
"The Valkyrie," Azriel replied, his voice carrying a touch of pride.
The name hit her like an unexpected blow, a pang of old sorrow threading through her heart. She kept her gaze fixed on the book in her hand, masking the flicker of pain. The Valkyrie—warriors who were legends even in her time. She remembered when she had once trained alongside them, centuries ago, before their numbers dwindled and faded, leaving her with only the memories of a time long gone.
Lost in thought, she didn't notice when Azriel took a step closer, settling onto the narrow couch beside her with a smoothness that belied the vast span of his wings. It was a sight that might have made her laugh if not for the ache still lodged in her chest, but somehow he managed it, wings folding just so, finding space that hardly seemed available. The realisation surprised her, and she found herself watching him with a faint touch of wonder.
Azriel seemed focused elsewhere, his sharp gaze scanning the pile of books and scattered notes she'd amassed. His fingers brushed against the edge of a few pages, taking in the titles, his curiosity more open than she'd seen before. Noting the way he took in each one, she couldn't help studying him in return—his quiet attentiveness, the way he seemed completely at ease here in the library, sharing her small corner.
"Doing some heavy reading," he murmured, glancing sideways at her with a glimmer of intrigue.
Aurelia lowered her gaze to the book in her lap, suddenly feeling like a schoolgirl without a friend to sit with—a wallflower on the outskirts of a world everyone else seemed to fit into. "I've always liked studying," she said, her voice soft, almost shy.
Azriel's surprise flickered across his face, his golden-brown eyes warm as he watched her. "I know," he murmured gently, as if the admission were a shared secret.
After a moment's pause, he tilted his head, studying her. "What are you reading up on this time?" he asked, his voice easy, though the curiosity there was real.
She blinked, taken aback. "Why do you ask?" Her brows knit, the tiniest bit of suspicion tinged with intrigue in her gaze. "You never have before."
He gave a faint, almost wistful smile. "I'm just curious."
But the truth, he kept to himself: he was curious about her, drawn to seeing the woman she had become, yet still catching glimpses of the girl he had known long ago, glimpses that intrigued him more than he wanted to admit.
Her initial wariness faded, and she began explaining, her face brightening as she spoke. "Magic bending through the elements," she said, a note of wonder threading through her voice. Her hands moved expressively as she elaborated, fingers brushing against parchment notes and old sketches that mapped out theories, spells, and illustrations of the elements intertwining.
Azriel heard her words—each one clear, vibrant, as her voice carried her excitement—but, in another way, he heard nothing at all. All he could see was the light that came alive in her eyes, a spark he hadn't seen before. Her features softened and animated as she spoke, her movements graceful, expressive, yet entirely unguarded. It was as though the years of restraint, the reserve he'd grown accustomed to in her, slipped away to reveal someone else—someone he found himself wanting to know deeply.
The beat of his heart softened, an unusual warmth spreading through his chest. For once, Azriel let himself simply relax, a smile lingering on his lips as he watched her, feeling himself slip deeper into the pull of her voice, the energy that she radiated.
She was beautiful, yes, but it was more than that. She was intriguing, alive with a passion he hadn't seen before, her love of knowledge woven into every word. Sitting there with her in this quiet moment, Azriel felt himself falling, drawn in by her light, her laughter, the enchanting way she brought her world to life.
Azriel's gaze drifted back to the book only to realise, with a jolt, that Aurelia had moved closer. Her arm brushed his, and his shadows had, without his conscious intent, slithered between them, holding the pages open for her as though they, too, were entranced by her enthusiasm. He let himself take in her profile, her intent expression as she explained some intricacy of elemental magic, and the faint light dusting her cheeks where the afternoon sun cast through the library's tall windows.
Then a subtle scent reached him—strawberries, rich and ripe, mixed with the warm allure of chocolate. He felt his breath hitch, a primal part of him unexpectedly captivated by the sweetness. There was something else, something wild and intoxicating, underlying the scent, and an unbidden thought surfaced, primal and unguarded.
Edible.
Azriel's mind swirled with the strange realisation, a hint of colour rising to his cheeks. His shadows curled back, retreating slowly as though caught in a secret they hadn't intended to share. He wanted to lean closer, to understand how he'd never noticed this about her, to let the sweetness settle in a way that felt both instinctive and undeniably captivating.
For a moment, he glanced at her again, letting his gaze linger as she moved her fingers along the text, her expression thoughtful. The book had vanished from his mind; all he could think about was how close she was, how perfectly her presence filled the space beside him.
A low, amused voice broke through the library's stillness. "Well, doesn't this look cosy."
Aurelia sprang back, almost jolting upright as her eyes snapped away from Azriel. Azriel's calm softened expression hardened instantly, cooling into a smouldering anger as his gaze landed on Cassian, who approached them with a sly grin, clearly relishing his timing.
Cassian strolled closer, unfazed by the sharp glare Azriel sent him. He gave Aurelia an exaggerated bow. "Princess," he said with a wry smile, his voice full of mock formality, "mind if I borrow our wayward friend here? Seems he's sneaked off from his duties."
Aurelia's eyes drifted toward Azriel, a hint of surprise in her expression. "I thought you were finished training for the day," she said, brow raised in faint accusation. Realising he'd likely skipped out to spend time with her, she saw the glint of mischief in Cassian's eye.
Cassian shot Azriel a wink, his gaze lingering too long on the two of them. He looked downright pleased with himself, amused at breaking up their private moment. Azriel clenched his jaw and rose to his feet, his shoulders taut with barely restrained tension. Cassian was making a habit of stealing time he wasn't willing to let go of so easily; it would take nothing to have him on his knees.

Hot Ghouls Chapter 10 1/2
Masterpost
At 8:00 pm, Danny scraped himself off the counter at his work-study position and gathered up his books. His replacement, Angelica, was already setting up by adjusting the height of the spinning chair in front of the best computer. She was a little older than him, a Junior maybe? She had been his training supervisor.
A patron came up while he was putting his notebooks in his bag. Angelica checked them out, soft beeps marking each book. He hung around a few moments until she finished and the student went out the door.
“Hey, Angie?” He asked. “I saw you're on closing Saturday. I'm on opening.” Danny fidgeted. “Would you be okay with a trade?” He was going to have to stay out late tonight, and there was no way he’d be able to catch up on missed sleep on Friday. He knew from experience that he’d be staggering all Saturday if he really had to be at the library by 8 am.
Angelica blinked and paused for a moment as she thought it over. “Tentatively, it's fine,” she decided. “I'll text you when I know for sure. I have to check with Birdie.”
Danny put his hands up. “Fair enough,” he said agreeably, “I owe you one either way for trying.”
“It's not a problem, I have to work the same hours either way.” Angelica opened up a browser and then started setting up whatever schoolwork she had to keep her occupied until midnight. “Have a good night, Danny. Take care out there. Stay away from banks.”
He promised that he would and then he slouched out onto the dim campus. It was pretty dead at the moment. People were mostly off campus, or in their dorms getting ready to go out for the night, Danny figured. He started the walk home on autopilot.
Danny hadn’t forgotten that he promised Jason he’d focus on their problem, and it didn’t matter that Jason had been kind of a creep about it. It was still high up his priority list.
But the more he thought about it, the more freaked out he was that Waters had managed to do it in the first place. It should have been impossible. There had to be a factor that they didn’t know about, but Danny wasn’t enough of an expert on piercing the veil between life and death to figure that out without tanking his grades. He hadn’t been able to get a hold of Vlad yet, either.
His tentative theories all seemed bonkers. Maybe Waters had gotten hold of some kind of magical focus, or gotten sponsored by someone with a lot of hocus pocus. Maybe Waters was a tool for someone else’s scheme, as opposed to just being a useless tool like usual. It was also possible that Jason was the weird factor. It seemed like a big coincidence, though, that Waters would stumble upon a sacrificial victim who actually was already eligible to reside in the Infinite Realms. Vlad had said it would be possible for a ghost on the living world side to get sent packing by Waters’ bullshit, but that possibility was outright silly. What ghost would A: be in the human world; and B: get caught by Jeremy friggin Waters or even sillier, C: want to get engaged to Danny?
It was a moot point. Jason gave Danny some weird feelings that he suspected might be like, puberty related, but he definitely wasn’t a ghost. Danny could tell that, at least. He was a flashy-dressing biker tough guy. He was probably a community theatre escapee, what with the cherry red helmet with weird face shape molding and his dramatic play to lounge around one of Danny’s regular study spots, but come on. He was just some dude. Kind of a dorky dude, even.
‘Massively hot, though,’ Danny had to acknowledge. He could never let Jazz know. Or Sam. Or Tucker. Or-
He shuddered at the thought of his parents meeting his accidental fiance.
Just, no. The only person he could probably trust around Jason was, idk… Wulf?
“I need better friends,” Danny muttered. He jogged down the final set of concrete stairs that led off campus and into the city itself.
It was debatable as to whether there was any point in going back to his apartment. The backpack on his shoulders wasn’t that heavy. If he went there, he’d basically dump his luggage and change and then have to go…
Danny made a face and fished out his phone. He optimistically changed directions before he could finish typing his request to crash at Jazz’s place for the night. On the one hand, she would know firsthand how little sleep he was going to get. On the other hand, this would shave hours off of his travel.
He was nearly to his sister’s apartment near the main Gotham U campus when she sent back a message.
:( I’m not home tonight, but my roommate is! If you can ghost in without her knowing, go for it! But she really can’t know, I can’t have guests when I’m not there to supervise.
Danny typed up a message with a little emoji robber accusing her of criminal actions before he remembered he shouldn’t bite the hand that let him crash.
You’re saving my entire afterlife, he sent instead.

Invincible Spoilers [Viltrumite Thoughts]
When the big purge happened, the most peaceful and well adjusted Viltrumites died because they were deemed “weak”. We know this, the culture died and was replaced with the current regime and ideology. The best parents would have died too, the ones who would never think to kill their kids for being weak.
But the remaining Viltrumites would have still varied in how committed to the cause they were, even if they kept it secret. There would have been couples that really were in love, in private or no. Men and women who managed to crack each other’s hard exteriors and win the soft heart hidden inside.
For all the awful things that twisted love in the empire, the real thing never truly died. Children were still being born to parents that would do everything they could to prove they were strong enough to live. Couples still sacrificed their time for each other and for family. They were people, people vary in how warm they are and how much their career means to them.

The plague is what took out the romantics and the ones who desired children.
It killed the type of people who chose to get to know each other after training, slowly falling in love.
It killed the type who had “lesser” jobs and therefore more free time to enjoy another’s company and raise children.
It killed the generals and soldiers whose children and grandchildren loved their stories about other worlds.
It killed the ones that were getting by in a regime they didn’t fully agree with, but had to live in.
The 50 who survived were the strongest and most loyal to the regime. Thragg being the most deluded of them all and the face of their twisted beliefs.
It left individuals who would never have considered romance or parenthood. The ones who believed that there would always be someone having children
Some, like Anissa, didn’t want anything to do with opening up to somebody or “wasting time” on a child that may be weak. Or like Conquest, whose true love was violence, and only violence.
Others were overachievers that saw romance as a distraction from their training and missions.
I can easily see Nolan after hours in the training room, scoffing to himself at a couple who is spending time on “nothing”. He’s more concerned with the “important things”. Until Debbie corrected him at the baseball game, he hadn’t considered recreation as anything more than a distraction.

[Man was pouting over having to watch little league]
Maybe he never would have taken up writing, if not for the need to keep track of his old missions inconspicuously. Maybe book one started with a short draft that read like a brief report. I picture him begrudgingly going to a human library and checking out books on astronauts. Having to replay finer details of the mission in his head and change them to sound more human. Maybe that’s how he figured out he liked writing.
Kregg and Luthan probably never thought about romance and parenthood until it became their mission. Maybe they had never stopped to think that they might like it. And I doubt they’re the only ones.
If you’ve ever held someone else’s baby and felt scared you’d drop it, you wouldn’t be alone. But humans are pretty good at moving past that fear. We learn how to be gentle from our youth. We know how to handle an infant without hurting it.
Imagine being someone who never thought about having a child, from a world where it’s considered a waste of time with your long lifespan. And then you have to have a baby, because your people are dying off. You were never taught how to be gentle, you were never taught how to care for a baby. But now you must.
I think Nolan was the first to feel a deep, paranoid fear of crushing his child. If a baby Viltrumite is weak, and a human adult is like an ant, how weak must the half-human baby be? Man probably thought he could breathe on Mark wrong and he’d explode.
And then when the others had their kids, they felt the same way. [Except Thragg. He built different.] For the men, this was the easiest to deal with. Nolan, Kregg and Luthan could all leave their children with their wives. It’s normal for the baby to spend its early days close to mom. It gave them time to have breaks from the newfound fear and to get used to handling the baby despite it.
Thula had to handle the baby so much more, but she had a human husband to give her a break when she needed it. When the fear of accidentally crushing the baby got too loud to ignore.
I think the reason Anissa sought out a human husband after everything she did was because she couldn’t handle the baby on her own. Perhaps she thought it was because the babies were part human that all her peers were disgustingly shaken.
But that wasn’t it at all. They all would have still been petrified of hurting the babies even if they were full blooded. They were all petrified because they were responsible for fulfilling a mission none of them were prepared for. One where failure could mean extinction. For the first time in a long time, every new life was valuable in their eyes and the eyes of their regime.
It hadn’t felt so important to these people in particular when the empire flourished. They had never considered the love and sacrifices and fear of failure that “weaker” Viltrumites felt when they raised their kids in the heyday. They sacrificed their time for the cause and didn’t leave room for relationships. None of them knew how much their lives were about to change.

Family became a priority for them when it never was before.

Average child shenanigans surprised them because they never got to experience normal childhoods.

They had to learn how to respond to child’s play.

And how to give advice/discipline a child. It made them think differently over time.

Pau’s Library

I’ve always liked to talk about books so I might as well keep an open logbook here. The list is a mixture of rereads, top favorites, and books read this 2025.
I won’t give a definite rating as it’s not conducive to getting anyone to read any of these. Instead I’ll be leaving a favorite quote of mine from the book, one that I wrote thoughts about in my reading journal and hope that entices you to check it out. Personal favorites will have 🌸 as its mark.
My ask box is open to any recommendations or any conversations about my list and your list too!
Yearly Re-reads
East of Eden by John Steinbeck 🌸 ↳ “It would be absurd if we did not understand both angels and devils, since we invented them.” Breast & Eggs by Mieko Kawakami 🌸 ↳ “My monolithic expectation of what a woman’s body was supposed to look like had no bearing on what actually happened to my body. The two things were wholly unrelated. I never became the woman I imagined. And what was I expecting?” Chess Story by Stefan Zweig 🌸 ↳ “People and events don't disappoint us, our models of reality do. It is my model of reality that determines my happiness or disappointments.”
2025 in books
So Late in the Day by Claire Keegan ↳ “You know what is at the heart of misogyny? When it comes down to it?’ ‘So I’m a misogynist now?’ ‘It’s simply about not giving.” Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan ↳ “What would life be like, he wondered, if they were given time to think and reflect over things.” The Hour of the Star by Clarice Lispector ↳ “She had no idea how to cope with life and she was only vaguely aware of her own inner emptiness.” The Lottery & Other Stories by Shirley Jackson ↳ “No one even noticed me, she thought with reassurance, everyone who saw me has gone by long ago.” [Pillar of Salt] Flush by Virginia Woolf 🌸 ↳ “She was too just not to realise that it was for her that he had sacrificed his courage, as it was for her that he had sacrificed the sun and the air.” The Eye by Vladimir Nabokov [tw: su*cid*] ↳ “After all, in order to live happily, a man must know now and then a few moments of blankness. Yet I was always exposed, always wide-eyed; even in sleep I did not cease to watch over myself, understanding nothing of my existence, growing crazy at the thought of of not being able to stop being aware of myself.” The Six Death of the Saint by Alix E Harrow 🌸 ↳ “But in the end, there was no saint, just a lonely girl telling secrets to herself in a dark mirror.” Journey Into The Past by Stefan Zweig 🌸 ↳ “Madness,” he exclaimed to himself, in astonishment, faltering. “Madness! What do they want? Once again, once again!” War once again, war that had so recently shattered his whole life?” Notes from Underground by Fyodor Dostoevsky ↳ “Man only likes counting his grief, he doesn’t count his happiness. But if he were to count properly, he’d see that there’s enough of both lots for him.” The Double by Fyodor Dostoevsky ↳ “Sorrow is concealed in gilded palaces, and there’s no escaping it.” Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross ↳ “I don’t want to wake up when I’m seventy-four only to realize I haven’t lived.” The Door by Magda Szabó ↳ "When the sands run out for someone, don't stop them from going." ↳ "You can't give them anything to replace life. Do you think I didn't love Polett? That it it meant nothing to me when she'd had enough and wanted out? It's just that , as well as love, you also have to know how to kill. It won't do you any harm to remember that." Human Acts by Han Kang ↳ “Is it true that human beings are fundamentally cruel? Is the experience of cruelty the only thing we share as a species? Is the dignity that we cling to nothing but self-delusion, masking from ourselves the single truth: that each one of us is capable of being reduced to an insect, a ravening beast, a lump of meat? To be degraded, slaughtered—is this the essential of humankind, one which history has confirmed inevitable?” The Book of Goose by Yiyun Li ↳ “Often I imagine that living is a game of rock-paper-scissors: fate beats hope, hope beats ignorance, and ignorance beats fate. Or in a version that has preoccupied me: the fatalistic attracts the hopeful, the hopeful attracts the ignorant , and the ignorant, the fatalistic.” Ella Minnow Pea: A Novel in Letters by Mark Dunn ↳ “For the present, it is easier for us to turn away. Our repulsion, you see, will not spur us to revolt until this plague moves much closer to home.” Confusion by Stefan Zweig ↳ “We live through myriads of seconds, yet it is always one, just one, that casts our entire inner world into turmoil…” The Art Thief by Michael Finkel [Non-fic] ↳ “Art signals our freedom. WIP Wednesday Thursday
Game Night
I was tagged by some of the loveliest folks I know. Such sweet words of lusty delight they write. Muses both of you
@ollypopwrites @heylittleriotact
WIP work remains an interesting thing. So I’m giving you fresh character work instead. I enjoyed writing this and decided to take a look at how an evening might look from lich perspective. Consider this ‘work in progress’ character work for what I’m always gettin at.
———-
Rook was yelling. Johanna had that effect. The cheerful sort of shout. Easy enough to tell the difference when mortal. Easier still with undead sight coloring the emotion of the moment. Emmrich watched the triumph spark, an overbearing pride lash towards the skull at the head of the table.
“You can’t cheat here boy, I know you’re out of spells.”
The dining table was clear of dinner. Dishes away and a detailed map laid out and littered with various miniatures took their place. Snacks to nibble, wine to sip, a lonesome whiskey bottle sat untouched. The lich kept to the darker quiet corner couch. Table before him littered with notes, questions, Bellara had left lists if he had a mind to indulge the endless probing.
“Ha! See!! Page 103, you know the necromancer class best, I can use that spirit to power it!” Worne crowed.
Emmrich kept mind there, written questions ignored, watched irritation rise like pride off the half-lich leading the game. He tilted his head that way, could feel Johanna’s attention flick against his briefly before the shouting started again.
“Fool. You could do that. But you lack the proper alignment.” Hezenkoss sniffed. Sounded almost as if she could lift her chin from table in emphasis.
“What?! But Eric is chaotic evil! Says here…” Worne sputtered, flipped still in the book for another marked entry.
Johanna started laughing. Loud mocking braying that shook the table and players gathered. “Should have thought of that earlier! Change it to chaotic neutral.”
“What?! No! He’s evil!”
“Rook.” Lucanis spoke this time. Voice slow and tired. “Last scene Eric gave all his money to a beggar.”
Taash groaned in agreement, lifted their head from where it lay on the hard surface, empty beer in hand, “You shouted ‘bangles for the bangable.’”
“That was purely selfish!! Who cares about money with an ass like that around?” The rogue snapped the book shut, slammed it to the table for dramatic effect. Johanna’s description of the NPC had been too savory for ‘Eric’ to ignore.
“Uuuuh. I hate to mention. But…Eric also saved that kid from a blood mage.” Harding raised a hand from rubbing Taash’s back.
“Evil vs evil!” Worne looked hurt. Betrayed. This was his party, they should have his back here.
Davrin crossed his arms and snorted. “Eric could’ve healed poor Barnacus.” He gestured at his toppled miniature, “but he flirted with that hobo using an illusion instead.”
“Well…” the hurt faded, shame replacing for a flicker, but that never…
“Worne. Eric has been acting neutral all game.” Neve’s calm voice settled the matter. The shame settled. Rook’s face red for once. Neve shrugged, kept glass in hand and hovered over near Emmrich.
A hushed “Fuck…” settled over the table as Worne looked over their fallen minis before the horde. “Dammit. Is that a party wipe again? Where’s Bellara?”
“Her character died an hour ago, Rook. She left to work on that archive.” Davrin said with a bemused brow. Stood from the table then to take leave, “And I need to see Assan.”
Johanna cackled. Rook seemed the only one in distress. The rest had been resigned to such a fate from the start. Were clearing out like Davrin. Some to the library for book club, others perhaps to bed.
Worne remained and bickered over smaller matters from earlier in the game. Emmrich could catch pieces. Johanna argued she kept to the party’s CR. This was practically the module. Worne was checking the balance of dice again. Johanna proclaiming the enemies weren’t idiots. Of course they’d execute someone making death saving throws.
The rest of the beleaguered players exited the dining hall. Gentle talk of night’s last activities and farewells and ‘thanks I guess’ to the game master. Neve still hovered a moment.
“Emmrich. Joining us tonight?”
He leaned forward. Looked up to meet her gaze. Swirling green in skull could see the pity sprites clinging about her. A choking concern he didn’t care to stomach. The lich sighed. A mere sound lacking previous warmth.
“No.” He inclined his head towards the dining table. It had been cleared of its previous game. A new one was already taking form with terrain in place and numerous miniatures arrayed as army. “Johanna still requires some supervision. What holds her can weaken with transportation.”
A small untruth. It could weaken, but he had seen to the matter, reinforced it all before game start. Hezenkoss was as secure here now as she might be on the table in his quarters. He found it less impossible to get something past Neve these days. One couldn’t count on countenance for clues when they spoke with a skull. Still. Her brow rose. Emmrich wouldn’t have moved the half-lich at all if he considered it a danger.
Her smile and voice were soft, “Don’t let them yell too much. Alright? They’re still sharing space with you.”
Emmrich huffed. An echoing noise. Neve only laughed.
“What would the other lich lords think, hmm? You letting those two bully you?”
He’d honestly love to see them try and manage the pair. Doubted they would fare better. Might end up breaking oaths to get a moment’s peace.
Worne was already lining up his scouts. Johanna was holding back, muttering something about reserve and proper deployment tactics being key. Continued on about knowledge of enemy positions and fog of war. Worne was ignoring her and humming. Simply placed scouts along the edge of the map. Quiet enough for the moment.
“I’ll keep it in mind.” Emmrich replied. “Your concern is noted Neve.” He did his best to sound thankful, pleasant, but in the moment he wanted her gone. Nascent spirits swirled especially strong within Fade, even bubbled as they were, and he felt something close to nauseous when he glimpsed the worry sprouting around her.
“Slee…” she bit her tongue, “Have a good night Emmrich.”
“You as well. See that you do sleep.”
“You got it Professor.” Neve chuckled light, kept the smirk in play as she took her leave. And the dining hall door clicked shut. Only Emmrich, Johanna, and Rook remained.
“WHAT?!?” Emmrich flinched at Johanna’s rage. Could hear Worne’s laughter rumbling beneath it, building in strength.
“Games over.” Rook had his hands on his hips. Smug grin beaming as he caught Emmrich looking his way and winked, “I win.”
“I could crush your scouts with a single unit!” Johanna sputtered. Emmrich could practically hear her thoughts turning in air. Rook was motioning him over now. Delight dancing around him and seeming to pick at the utter frustration he’d caused. The rogue let Hezenkoss think on it awhile. Then leaned in close to the half-lich skull, his eyes still locked on Emmrich as the towering mage approached, and whispered.
“Deploy then…”
Johanna was silent.
Worne reached a hand out to Emmrich as the lich drew close. Fingers grasped at the edge of coat, pulled the necromancer in by his cloak. “I’ve caught the judge. You trust Emmrich with rules right?” Rook smirked. Leaned up on tiptoe and pecked the point of chin bone.
Emmrich gathered his wits. Suddenly awash in the enveloping warmth of Worne’s mirth and blooming adoration. Spirits so strong shouldn’t be so easy to gather. But the moment Rook had Volkarin in hand, less than that, the moment his thoughts started turning towards the mage Emmrich found it overwhelming to be near.
Needed more practice with all of this…sense. But was it so bad to drown in all consuming obsession? The love might smother, but he no longer had need of air.
“Fine.” Johanna snapped. Emmrich’s head tilted, spied a tiny thought of resignation. He made a clearing noise for a lost throat.
“What happens to be the point of contention?”
“She can’t deploy. I win.” Worne giggled, swept a hand over his scouts lined along her side of the board one after the other.
“Pah!”
Emmrich knew that noise. Felt Worne’s mischievousness catch. Assessed the board state a moment…
“You…” he had played plenty with Johanna years ago, read the updated rules weeks past…Emmrich barked a laugh. Loud and full, piercing and flinching, but Worne was joining him. Smacking Emmrich’s back, hugging him tight a moment as tears filled his eyes.
“Emmrich told me plenty about your ‘deployments’ Johanna. I wondered when you’d try it.”
“Incorrigible brat!” The half-lich spit in sound. Further growls following. “Another match! That was hardly fair play.”
“Now Johanna.” Emmrich cut in. Dropped a hand when he realized he’d raised it to wipe a happy tear that would never appear. “Rook won fair and square. The rules are very clear. You have to deploy from your side.” Her growl grew in strength, “and you can’t do it so close to enemy units.”
Simple scouts covered where she might play. Deployment impossible. An entire army in reserve. Useless. The growls ended in the sound of a gnashing bite.
“And Emmrich promised me rewards if I could finish a game fairly and without fighting.” Worne leaned over triumphant.
“I…” the lich had no memory of such a promise, but now that the thought occurred…no he wouldn’t correct it. Rook was carrying on anyways.
“So we’ll be off. I’m done for the night. Do enjoy the fresh view until morning?”
“A relief to be free from your vicinity.” Johanna’s voice coated in loathing. Rook laughed at the sound. And Emmrich spied again a separate delight. Not quite pride, but joy of some kind, and perhaps fondness? She was delighting in thinking of a new way to play.
“Best of luck next time Johanna.” Emmrich chirped. Checked in a glance that wards remained in place. Felt the tug on his arm as Rook led the way out. Couldn’t help but join the rolling chuckles. Worne’s voice a growl as he opened the door for them both, “I’m gonna cuddle all those bones…”
“Darling,” the door shut behind them and Rook was latching on again. Wasted no time in making his declaration truth, hands, fingers were winding into rib. Feathering a touch on clavicle. He drew in still bright and smiling, then dipped his head down low near Emmrich’s waist. Peered up into the hollow where heart once sat.
“Crawl into that ribcage…”
Emmrich sighed and pulled Worne out and away with ease. The lich paused, glanced at his hands after the action, surprised at the strength. The flicker of concern disappeared as familiar scared skin covered the linen, callused fingers entangled in the gilded and pulled the bones along. “C’mon now Lord, your beloved is owed a reward.”
The lich stumbled a moment as Worne sped off with his hand entwined, but an opening of stride kept him even with the faster yet shorter. Emmrich almost felt a ‘breathe’ enter as they hurried back together.
