So I have a shit ton of Twst fankids btw! They kinda swim around in my brain but only a few ppl I know have gotten the info dumps lmao

Skye was the first one I made I think (actually it might’ve been Rico (florid) but eh oh well who’s counting)

But yes this is Skye Ashengrotto!

They’re my older Jamiazu kid, I do have two. The younger one is my octo boy Akram :) he’s funny I wanna pinch his cheeks but he’s not the point here

So Skye! It feels weird publically infodumping abt my OCs like wtf am I even supposed to put here

They’re a half mer, which do work a lil different than normal mers in my lore. Half mers can transform without a potion but it’s still a long and generally painful process, esp going from mer to human. I kind of switch between calling them a snake mer and a naga but there’s lore there- Nagas exist in my lore outside of sea snake mers, there are also fully terrestrial Nagas. So the terrestrial nagas wouldn’t be considered snake mers but the sea snake nagas would be a type of mer while also still being a naga ITS CONFUSING DONT ASK (actually do. Ask everything so I can roll more of my fankids out like marbles)

Skye was created by a spell, I haven’t quite worked the details out 😔 but Jamil is part gorgon in my lore which is why they have the hair snakes which isn’t a typical naga trait. And to elaborate on the hair snakes: they are alive, the one w the bigger stripes is Flora and the smaller stripes is Jett. Skye can communicate w them telepathically and their eyes glow which is kinda neat. They’re kind of Skye’s version of floatsam and jetsam (unless u count Rico (florid) and Lilac (treyjade) which is like their ver of the twins- IDK ITS COMPLICATED)

idk what else to put here so LETS THROW SOME FHARACTER DYNAMICS YEAH and also mentioning some of my other fankids! They all have profiles (except my Malleus kid I’m sorry Aihan I can’t think of a design for you) but I’m probably gonna save those for another post-

So jamiazu in my lore live in the Shaftlands in a beachfront place and also live pretty close to Treyjade, however Florid live in the Queendom. The octatrio and their spouses is a close group so they’re essentially a big family. My treyjade kids are Maren (older) and Lilac, then my Florid kids are Rico (older) and the twins Mary and Eliza.

Skye saw Lilac more as a kid cuz they lived so close together but also saw Rico a lot when flrd would visit or they’d go to visit them. Rico is an agent of chaos and Lilac is Skye’s 2nd in command so their dynamic on a surface level is pretty similar to the octatrio, but there’s still a lot of differences once u get into the meat of it. Tho Lilac and Rico are Skye’s best friends and basically like siblings to them.

Outside of jamiazu Skye is particularly close with Jade, they share a love of tea :) he’s their cool but also slightly unsettling uncle

THEN THERES SHENZI- Shenzi is my younger kaliruggie kid and I am not gonna get into her here bcuz she rlly needs her own post w all her trauma but good lord these two do not like each other. Shenzi’s really nice but she’s not quite as nice as Kalim so after about 5 months of trying and failing to befriend Skye in their freshman year she just gave up and now their relationship is nothing but hostile (which was not helped when Shenzi and lilac started dating)

Speaking of that tho- so my idikei kids :) Ember (named after the pokemon attack) is the older one and he’s basically that “Jock idia can’t hurt you he’s not real Jock idia:” thing as a person he has the Fire hair n shit but he plays basketball and is heavily extroverted but no one gives a shit abt Ember this is NOT ABT HIM this is abt his sister! Her name is Zelda because you know Idia would name his daughter Zelda- she got all of Idia’s social anxiety lmao. She’s extremely shy and there’s a total of like 4 people in the school she can actually talk to without melting into a small stain on the floor. She’s an Skye are both in board games club and sometime in early freshman year she falls on her ass and knocks over a bunch of stuff which Skye happens to witness and cue the most awkward interaction known to man bcuz Skye can’t talk to pretty girls and Zelda can’t talk to ANYONE but they end up walking to the mirror hall together afterwards which becomes a routine. Except they’re both awkward as fuck take like almost two fucking years to get together bcuz neither of them are gonna do anything abt it BUT THEYRE VERY CUTE!! I love them

Also my ashengrotto siblings are very wholesome I need to write some stuff w them- Akram is a little shit and he loves pissing Skye off but at the end of the day he admires them and Skye loves their brother a lot :)

Anyway good lord I’ve yapped too much okay OH YEAH Skye has a Russian blue cat named Mariana who they just fucking found on the side of the road and thought it was a mouse so for like 2 years Azul thought Skye was gonna eat the cat

Twilight Clownery—Part 2

In the guise of a personal essay on OP’s relationships with toxic men, at that. Honestly, the whole thing is so loosely conceived it just sounds like a parody of anti-Twilight clownery. Let’s get to it.

Already we have Bullshit #1. Although Team Jacob had its passionate adherents, Team Edward was definitely the most popular by a large margin. OP may have ~lucked out by having Team Jacob fans as her friends, but I was there. I remember the discourse, the fanfiction, the ~atmosphere. Most everyone was Team Edward.

Nowadays Jacob—the “healthy” choice—is mostly lambasted for his assault on Bella and his manipulation into kissing him. So already this essay and its ~Team Bella conclusion is several years outdated.

Tag yourself, I’m “reinforced his being a man.” 😂Also, “abstracted danger”—literally nomadic vampires and a whole-ass vampire royal family. Also, also, Edward considers himself a danger as well.

Charismatic and everyone despised them. That is some hot ice and wondrous strange snow right there. The quality of the prose here is truly ~~stunning.

Considering that Rosalie canonically hated Bella for 1) Edward liking her and 2) for Bella wanting to be a vampire and not choosing humanity like she would (*foot stomp*) and viewed her as a baby incubator in Breaking Dawn to the point of Jacob and Edward both calling her out for it in disgust…she is perhaps not the best character to use as a grand metaphor for your sapphic desires, Clown OP.

At this point I’m not at all convinced that Clown OP even watched the movies. This was in Eclipse, and Edward didn’t deflate the tires of her Chevy; he removed the engine. Nor did he forbid her to leave the house, only not to see Jacob or the werewolves. And homeboy literally just gave up after Bella’s toothless “grizzly bears” threat.

This is toxic, all right, and I’m not referring to Twilight. Seriously, wtf? Being heartbroken after a major breakup with someone you love is one of the most realistic parts of the whole series. It’s so real it’s frankly basic. Even Clown OP was appalled, lol.

The movies may have been godawful adaptations, but the fact that they depicted Bella’s heartbreak is not one of them. Had Meyer made Bella move on after a month or two with Jacob or a new beau, I would have called bullshit. Bella was so in love with Edward—he did save her life three times and stopped himself from draining her dry in the process—that no other response would have been plausible.

As if Jacob didn’t show “toxic” behaviors the fandom is in continual pearl-clutching over, to the extent of making the incredibly asinine fanon that Meyer purposefully “ruined” his character in Eclipse. Also, Clown OP unironically thinking that basic-ass compliment is “queer” is clownery of a very different kind.

…Doesn’t Bella actually attribute some of these traits to Edward? In Eclipse? Maybe not all of them, but most? I don’t think Clown OP is making the point she thinks she is making.

One of these days I will make a whole-ass post about this whole notion of reading characters as role models. There are truly people out there who read all fiction as medieval morality plays for actual instruction, and Clown OP is almost certainly one of them.

This is going to sound super wild, I know, but did Clown OP ever consider—just once—that Meyer may be doing this very much on purpose? That throughout the book Edward gets to know Bella and begins to like her as a person? That the whole metaphor of bloodlust isn’t so much carnal lust but dark impulses of (patriarchal?) violence and lack of empathy? That the the whole point of the book is to see Edward develop from an arrogant vampire to a boy in love struggling on being completely out of his element? Did Clown OP ever think of it or did she just want to talk about her awful experiences with men through very hazy memories of watching the first Twilight movie?

(Also, not to be mean or anything, but Clown OP criticizing Meyer’s prose…don’t go throwing stones in a glass house, hon. I’m just saying).

ok but seriously

in general this episode was really great, but i can’t help but feel like it was rushed and that multiple sections were supposed to be whole eps. its not a bad thing in the ep and i don’t even think i really hurts the viewing experience, but there were multiple parts that were kinda glossed over like the big fight and what happened between the king concussion. i can’t blame any of this on the crew but disney for making a dumb mistake, and seeing the potential for a season 3 at the end, i can only feel bad for what disney missed out on. and even then dana and the crew did a great job for what they had.

ok back to random stuff that last goodbye between the adult squad is very (crying noises)

also why did eda’s sigil thing not apear until raine touched it

illusion guy who really cares about appearance shows up to one of the most important moments of his life like he just got out of bed. hilarious

yknow for something that happened within a plot of a kids show, the whole eda gambit worked out surprisingly well for the first few minutes until eda’s arm is very visibly cursed

note to self: the collector is very naive when it comes to trusting people. like even after being betrayed by belos he still took kings words seriously one he pinky swore

also belos likes screwing people over. yes we already know this. like i get why he didn’t want to let out a destructive god of chaos, but like still mean you just lied and with a smile on your face

so luz just straight up almost died with the petrification thing. good thing she noticed the glove in the corner and went specifically for that as she was being petrified. smart move kill the guy

or was it before idk

ok so the draining happened and since the only two drivers have sigils, the ship just straight up crashed and presumable cracked king’s head and now they had to leave alador behind to keep of the abomatons hope he’s fine

then they showed up at the altar thing and have to look at everyone dying. guess they really know their plan failed

and now they’re going to luz how did king sleep through all that lol

also how is hunter more fine than everyone else with sigils

ok so after that illusion spell gus might just actually know all of belos’ backstory good for him i guess we’ll need that later

belos was being nice to hunter and idk if that was an act or not. either way he went insane the second he saw flapjack so i guess it was caleb’s palisman

belos specifically put all the golden guards into one specific hole. damn dude just like hollow knight

also the collectors in the hole of failures massive L for him

also kiki knows about all of this

and the titan locked the collector away so thats cool

and king’s collar hides him from the collector so thats cool too. since it was on all of the walls where he was born those symbols were probably to protect him from the danger of the collector

also what was the collector doing at the end if they didn’t even know how to play owl house were you just destroying the place to be dramatic

damn raine just ripped off eda’s arm just like amp

ok so the whole arm chopping thing protected her from the draining spell, but that was going to be fixed anyways. it could have also helped from the curse if that wouldn’t have been stopped by the spell stopping. and it means she can still do wild magic if she ever can again so thats cool too

where did luz get the eyebrow scar tho we just never see it happen

and yeah the collector’s cool and the luz possession theories and now deemed outdated and funny

they just turn the tone of the scene from intense to “wtf is happening is this actually happening did they just do that” and its honestly great

i really like the type of villain that is just not fazed by anything and treats everything like its no big deal. like the collector treats everything like a game and just casually destroys the big bad of the series in like a second with no fanfare. then they just. move the moon. like with an ipad. no fanfare. it’s great

also belos probably isn’t gone forever so

he then proceeded to destroy the whole world for an owl house

and now they’re going to the human realm that would have made a great few seasons huh disney

they put a lot of emphasis on the belos blobs dripping onto hunter so that might be something or they may just be dramatic

also luz is just very down with sacrificing herself so i guess the protagonist role is really getting to her

so king pushes them into the portal and now the main trio is separated and one of them with their magical friends ins stuck in the human realm

just like amphibia

also speaking of amphibia ANNE BOONCHUY ANNE BOONCHUY IT’S ANNE BOONCHUY SHE’S ANNE BOONCHUY THIS IS HOW THE CROSSOVER CAN STILL HAPPEN

ok so like theres a headline about anne being in a frog land and it being a hoax. so like amphibia happened in the same universe as this and probably happened a while ago and people are already questioning the legitimacy of it damn. now i’m already questioning when in the amphibia timeline this happens like is it during 3A, after frogvasion, a few years after that. must be wild to hear this happening while your daughter’s also claiming to be stuck in another world

anyways that last scene was really good and captured the right emotions for me but my brain still reeling from amphibia just made me think of that.

so yeah now we wait for the specials and im curious as to how the story will continue. idk how they’ll follow up on the collector, how they’ll get back, what they’ll focus on, and how this story will end, but i’m sure that whatever happens will be a fun ride. or a painful one. that works too

Hi there, just a question for you if you have the time ♡ I know that you allow people to convert your Cyberpunk items from TS3 to TS4 freely (you are amazing, you know that?). However since I have the game, do you have or know of a tutorial for exporting from my files? The one I found was very general, very not 'beginner friendly'. Else I will just bring some of your stuff over if it's not been done yet, miss having them in my game (and base game TS4 only is limited). Love you ♡

Hi! Yeah, feel free to convert whatever; I think CC TOU/policies are ridiculous, and perversely counterproductive to uploading content publicly on the internet anyway.

Just be warned that a lot of my CC's not that great, cuz C2077 uniquely does not use or include typical diffuse textures, so I had to make many of the textures myself (and that's never a good idea, LOL). Not to mention, I had to shave off 1/2 - 3/4 of the polys on most of the meshes, cuz they're just excessively high. Even after decimating the polys they're still too dang high. It's been a pain in the neck to do anything with this effing game, even when not actually playing it! (－‸ლ)

Lesson #6B: MORE ON GAME EXTRACTING (PT2)

Trust me: extracting from C2077 in general is not very beginner friendly--this is the hardest game I've ever converted from, next to all the Koei Warriors games. Because not only did I have to use EFFING COMMAND LINES again, but the way CDPR arranged the game files (particularly the textures--or lack thereof)--were just saturated in demonic energy.

Mind you, I extracted C2077 back in the EARLY days, within the first weeks of the game's release, way before the Toolkit updated and got a GUI and CDPR released its dev toolkits for modders, so it’s possible I’m giving you outdated information, as the process nowadays might be pretty different from how it was back when I did it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I used the CP2077 Toolkit here, and followed the steps here.

To be fair, the steps themselves are actually very straightforward. I'm just a lazy, spoiled little ingrate who likes nice clean and simple GUI tools so i can click a button and see all the meshes & textures and go about my frikkin day. But no, instead i have to sit here with EFFING COMMAND LINES and try to figure out WTF these lines of code & text frikkin mean, with zero mesh preview tool to speak of. So I literally have no frikkin idea what anything looks like until I import it into Milkshape/Blender/3DS Max. GRAND. 🤬

(My horoscope told me I needed to get more sleep, and boy they weren't kidding, cuz I'm ornery AF today. 😩 )

But yeah, basically all you have to do is open the CP2077 toolkit .exe, and use the format the steps provide you with whatever the directory is where you installed the game.

As I've explained before in Pt1, all games bundle their files differently, so the trick with extracting is just to figure out what kind of bundle it is, what's in it, how to open it, and how to convert the mesh files into .obj format and the textures into .dds format.

For C2077, most of the files are in typical .bin files, with the meshes (.mesh files) & textures (.xbm files) in content\basegame_4_gamedata.archive | content\basegame_3_nightcity.archive |

So all you have to do is follow the steps and the formats they give you: copy/paste their extraction format code, and the "path to archive" is your installation directory: (e.g.: "archive -e -p "F:\Games\Cyberpunk2077\archive\pc\content\basegame_4_gamedata.archive" -w *.bin" to extract the .mesh files; or "archive -u --uext dds -p F:\Games\Cyberpunk2077\archive\pc\content\basegame_4_gamedata.archive -w *.bin" to extract the .dds files from the Gamedata bin archive).

Then just wait several HOURS (no exaggeration) for each archive to extract. I let mine run overnight for a a day or two--it took bloody frikkin forever.

Once you have all the meshes extracted, the good news is that converting them to .obj files The Sims can read is very easy, cuz all you have to do is use good ole NOESIS, THANK GOD~! ^0^ (Noesis can also open the .xbm texture files, BTW--it’s that clutch; I keep telling y’all.)

The issue with the textures is that C2077 just legit doesn't have many. 💀 It's a feature, not a bug--instead of using diffuse textures (like The Sims' overlay/multiplier diffuse), games like C2077 and Call of Duty instead use materials--kind of like the sample fabric swatches in a textiles shop or tailor, with dozens upon dozens of simple materials & microblends & patterns (a leather print, a metallic sheen, a paisley pattern, etc) shared between all meshes. It’s awful.

So you the extractor/porter/converter are now left with the sad task of patching all these materials together to make a lick of sense on a mesh that might very well use 100 different material files (no joke!) rather than 1 or 2 diffuse textures. And WOE BE UPON YOU if you’re trying to convert it for The Sims 3, where meshes can only use textures on ONE UV Map. The saving grace of TS3′s UV Mapping is that we have CASt, so often we can get away with having plain multipliers, so long as the RGBY Mask allows us to have recolorable channels that do a lot of that heavy lifting for us with patterns & color wheels. For TS2/TS4, however, I imagine more work would need to be done providing swatches, as nothing’s recolorable in those games.

So REJOICE at the pithy handful of actual diffuse textures (mostly decals & posters, etc) that CDPR bothered to grace us with in C2077--they're acts of mercy, I promise you. 🙏

And speaking of UV Maps--C2077′s are upside down. Which is absolutely frikkin lovely; who doesn’t love extra work, seriously. 😒

But yeah, that’s it for extracting, really.

Again, the method I used might be outdated by now, since I did all of mine in December 2020/January 2021, and I haven’t needed to stay up to date with the tools or anything since i already got what I needed out of them. :\

Satis - Old End Notes Compilation

Posting here because I forgot AO3 has a profile character limit. These are my old end notes from the prologue~chapter 27 (as of June 17, 2024) of Satis that I have removed from their respective chapters because 1) they were outdated af and 2) I wanted the chapters decluttered. This post will be edited and updated continuously with author’s notes of each new chapter. (Click “keep reading” at your own risk, this ended up being so long, I might have to divide it in the future. These read like old diary entries wtf)

prologue - parting words (2016-05-08)

Unlike Pushing Daisies, a happy-go-lucky product of a recent caffeine binge, this has been sitting in my computer for a long, long while, and I've decided to publish it today because it's Mother's Day (Parent's Day where I live).

This entire chapter resulted from my appreciation of Integra and Seras' relationship, which I always felt was portrayed quite profoundly in canon (Manga/OVA). Integra accepts Seras, takes her in, embraces her during her bloodlust, cuts her finger to feed her, and orders her not to die. Though this is intended to be, ultimately, an AxI fic, Integra and Seras' relationship will be an almost equally important pillar of the plot.

I must stress that this takes second priority to Snow White and will be updated only irregularly, if at all, until SW is completed. Which won't be long, I don't know. Headaches are rampant these days. Your responses will be the most welcome and beloved of all energizers. Especially since this is going to be a rather depressing and dramatic ride. I would love to hear what you thought. What will await our favorite Hellsing director, do you think?

Good news! Now that Snow White is finished I'll be able to keep a regular schedule for this! And by "regular" I mean something like an update every week or two. This is a rather difficult endeavor, since I have to delve into the emotions of these very complex characters, and being an overemotional person myself, I tend to get overwhelmed. So please be patient with me if I end up being late. I'm always, always trying to deliver my best! I should mention, the quickest way to check my survival is my Tumblr blog. Thank you so much for your wonderful words last chapter and I hope you enjoyed this chapter as well. It was hard, because one, the weather is horrible, and two, the weather is horrible, and three, Integra's situation is so convoluted that even I, the poor masochist who has undertaken this, have to take a breather every now and then. Second chances are really not that fantastic, you know?

Oh! And the rating is for violence, unresolved sexual tension, and, uh, maybe more? I make no promises! Let's see what the future holds.

03. eyes of war (2016-08-12)

The weather is hideous and I think I'm suffocating in the humidity. I hope this chapter doesn't seem too affected. God, I am so ready for autumn and the angsty vibes its winds send me!

Thank you all so much. I can't express adequately how I loved reading your responses and how joyed I am with all the ideas you're giving me. I'm afraid this story will start off a bit slow at first, but I'm really hoping to pick up the pace soon. I can say that a few major events are already set in stone and so is the climax. I know you're impatient to get there, but so am I! Let's journey on this rickety barge together. Be aware, though, it might not be what you expect!

Some of you might recall this from one of my notes in Snow White but the way I interpret Walter's defection in the series really can be summed up as jealousy (not the romantic kind). I'm trying to unfold the dynamics of Integra, Alucard and Walter's relationship as plausibly as possible. God, it's hard! They're such difficult children! And there's a reason the genre of this fic is drama. I'm going to spew drama everywhere. Be careful you don't drown in it! Stay tuned.

Thank you all for your feedback! You all are such stars. I'm so happy you like the poem I chose for Alucard and Integra last chapter. I speak not a stitch of Romanian, but when I discovered that poem I was like, oh? Oh! And I had to use it, of course. I actually preferred poetry when I was in college so understand you'll be seeing poems here and there in my stories. Along with music, they are one of my greatest muses.

Hello! Hello! I hope I find you well on this summer day. I know, I know, I've been terrible. But some things could not be helped, and I had to take the long way to deliver this chapter. Which unofficially marks the unofficial first section of this story. I don't divide them, exactly, but after this chapter we will pick up the pace, so to speak, and get into the nitty-gritty of Integra's situation, find out what's up with the other characters, blow up some skulls, and produce tears—among other things.

I know you have questions, especially concerning the end road this story will take. (Which will take a long time getting to!) This is all I can provide at this point (and some of you will have already read this): I have dropped Hints About The Future Plot. Countless times. Of course, they are never obvious. A word here, a sentence there. You won't know and I've made sure you won't. I don't even think they're worthy to be called hints, they're so insignificant. Nonetheless, they're there. As little, fleeting whimsies.

My take on Alucard and Walter's relationship is that they can be civil, even respectful—as shown in canon—when they want to be or have to be, but at the root of it all Walter is too embittered and Alucard is too careless. Also, I totally think Walter and Arthur were in cahoots concerning Alucard's banishment.

It has been so long, it took me a moment to remember how to upload. For much of the last two years, I was stuck in a job in which I was unwisely investing too much of my sanity, though I have met some of the best people of my life there. Now I have a new job. Not a better one, per se, but one that I can build a more organized schedule around.

Hello, it is I, the holiday cryptid. Jokes aside though, I am glad that I was able to wrap up this strange year with at least one update.

The ideas are still in my head. The love and anger and spite and sorrow I have for the characters still flow. And I shall endeavor to finish this story, even if it takes years.

Important: I will be undergoing an (unscheduled) re-editing of earlier chapters. Mostly grammatical, some minor word changes perhaps, but none that will change the plot, of course. huh, an interesting question, ty!

i can give more tailored advice if you hit me up on chat with more specifics on your background/interests.

given what you've written here, though, i'll just assume you don't have any immediate professional aspirations (e.g. you just want to learn some things, and you aren't necessarily trying to get A Cyber Security Job TM within the next three months or w/e), and that you don't know much about any specific programming/computering domain yet.

(stuff under cut because long)

first i'd probably just try to pick some interesting problem that you think you can solve with tech. this doesn't need to be a "hacking" project at first; i was just messing around with computers for ages before i did anything involving security/exploitation.

if you don't already know how to program, you should ideally pick a problem you can solve via programming. for instance: i learned a lot back in the 2000s, when play-by-post forum RPGs were in vogue. see, i'd already been messing around, building my own personal sites, first just with HTML & CSS, and later on with Javascript and PHP. and i knew the forum software everyone used (InvisionPowerBoard) was written in PHP. so when one of the admins at my RPG complained that they'd like the ability to set multiple profile pictures, i was like, "hey i'm good at programming, want me to create a mod to do that," and then i just... did. so then they asked me to program more features, and i got all the sexy nerd cred for being Forum Mod Queen, and it was a good time, i learned a lot.

(i also got to be the person who was frantically IMed at 2am because wtf the forum is down and there's an inscrutable error, what do??? basically sysadmining! also, much less sexy! still, i learned a lot!)

the key thing is that it's gotta be a problem that's interesting to you: as much as i love making dorky sites in PHP, half the fun was seeing other people using my stuff, and i think the era of forum-based RPGs has passed. but maybe you can apply some programming talents to something that you are interested in—maybe you want to make a silly Chrome extension to make people laugh, a la Cloud to Butt, or maybe you'd like to make a program that converts pixel art into cross-stitching patterns, maybe you want to just make a cool adventure game on those annoying graphing calculators they make you use in class, or make a script for some online game you play, or make something silly with Arduino (i once made a trash can that rolled toward me when i clapped my hands; it was fun, and way easier than you'd think!), whatever.

i know a lot of hacker-types who got their start doing ROM hacking for video games—replacing the character art or animations or whatever in old NES games. that's probably more relevant than the PHP websites, at least, and is probably a solid place to get started; in my experience those communities tend to be reasonably friendly to questions. pick a small thing you want to do & ask how to do it.

also, a somewhat unconventional path, but—once i knew how to program a bit of Python, i started doing goofy junk, like, "hey can i implemented NamedTuple from scratch,” which tends to lead to Python metaprogramming, which leads to surprising shit like "oh, stack frames are literally just Python objects and you can manually edit them in the interpreter to do deliberately horrendous/silly things, my god this language allows too much reflection and i'm having too much fun"... since Python is a lot of folks' first language these days, i thought i'd point that out, since i think this is a pretty accessible start to thinking about How Programs Actually Work under the hood. allison kaptur has some specific recommendations on how to poke around, if you wanna go that route.

it's reasonably likely you'll end up doing something "hackery" in the natural course of just working on stuff. for instance, while i was working on the IPB forum software mods, i became distressed to learn that everyone was using an INSECURE version of the software! no one was patching their shit!! i yelled at the admins about it, and they were like "well we haven't been hacked yet so it's not a problem," so i uh, decided to demonstrate a proof of concept? i downloaded some sketchy perl script, kicked it until it worked, logged in as the admins, and shitposted a bit before i logged out, y'know, to prove my point.

(they responded by banning me for two weeks, and did not patch their software. which, y'know, rip to them; they got hacked by an unrelated Turkish group two months later, and those dudes just straight-up deleted the whole website. i was a merciful god by comparison!)

anyway, even though downloading a perl script and just pointing it at a website isn't really "hacking" (it's the literal definition of script kiddie, heh)—the point is i was just experimenting a lot and trying a lot of stuff, which meant i was getting comfortable with thinking of software as not just some immutable relic, but something you can touch and prod in unexpected ways.

this dovetails into the next thing, which is like, just learn a lot of stuff. a boring conventional computer science degree will teach you a lot (provided you take it seriously and actually try to learn shit); alternatively, just taking the same classes as a boring conventional computer science degree, via edX or whatever free online thingy, will also teach you a lot. ("contributing to open source" also teaches you a lot but... hngh... is a whole can of worms; send a follow-up ask if you want that rant.)

here's where i should note that "hacking" is an impossibly broad category: the kind of person who knows how to fuck with website authentication tokens is very different than someone who writes a fuzzer, who is often quite different than someone who looks at the bug a fuzzer produces and actually writes a program that can exploit that bug... so what you focus on depends on what you're interested in. i imagine classes with names like "compilers," "operating systems," and "networking" will teach you a lot. but, like, idk, all knowledge is god-breathed and good for teaching. hell, i hear some universities these days have actual computer security classes? that's probably a good thing to look at, just to get a sense of what's out there, if you already know how to program.

also be comfortable with not knowing everything, but also, learn as you go. the bulk of my security knowledge came when i got kinda airdropped into a work team that basically hired me entirely on "potential" (lmao), and uh, prior to joining i only had the faintest idea what a hypervisor was? or the whole protection ring concept? or ioctls or sandboxing or threat models or, fuck, anything? i mostly just pestered people with like 800 questions and slowly built up a knowledge base, and remember being surprised & delighted when i went to a security conference a year later and could follow most of the talks, and when i wound up at a bar with a guy on the xbox security team and we compared our security models a bunch, and so on. there wasn't a magic moment when i "got it", i was just like, "okay huh this dude says he found a ring-0 exploit... what does that mean... okay i think i got that... why is that a big deal though... better ask somebody.." (also: reading an occasional dead tree book is a good idea. i owe my firstborn to Robert Love's Linux Kernel Development, as outdated as it is, and also O'Reilly's kookaburra book gave me a great overview of web programming back in the day, etc. you can learn a lot by just clicking around random blogs, but you’ll often end up with a lot of random little facts and no good mental scaffolding for holding it together; often, a decent book will give you that scaffolding.)

(also, it's pretty useful if you can find a knowledgable someone to pepper with random questions as you go. finding someone who will actively mentor you is tricky, but most working computery folks are happy to tell you things like "what you're doing is actually impossible, here's why," or "here's a tutorial someone told me was good for learning how to write a linux kernel module," or "here's my vague understanding of this concept you know nothing about," or "here's how you automate something to click on a link on a webpage," which tends to be handier than just google on its own.)

if you're reading this and you're like "ok cool but where's the part where i'm handed a computer and i gotta break in while going all hacker typer”—that's not the bulk of the work, alas! like, for sure, we do have fun pranking each other by trying dumb ways of stealing each other's passwords or whatever (once i stuck a keylogger in a dude's keyboard, fun times). but a lot of my security jobs have involved stuff like, "stare at this disassembly a long fuckin' time to figure out how the program pointer got all fucked up," or, "write a fuzzer that feeds a lot of randomized input to some C++ program, watch the program crash because C++ is a horrible language for writing software, go fix all the bugs," or "think Really Hard TM about all the settings and doohickeys this OS/GPU/whatever has, think about all the awful things someone could do with it, threat model and sandbox accordingly." occasionally i have done cool proof-of-concept hacks but honestly writing exploits can kinda be tedious, lol, so like, i'm only doing that if it's the only way i can get people to believe that Yes This Is Actually A Problem, Fix Your Code

"lua that's cool and all but i wanted, like, actual links and recommendations and stuff" okay, fair. here's some ideas:

microcorruption: very fun embedded security CTF; teaches you everything you need to know as you're doing it.

cryptopals crypto challenges: very fun little programming exercises that teach you a lot of fundamental cryptography concepts as you're going along! you can do these even as a bit of a n00b; i did them in Python for the lulz

the binary bomb lab is hilariously copied by, like, so many CS programs, lol, but for good reason. it's accessible and fun and is the first time most people get to feel like a real hacker! (requires you know a bit of C beforehand)

ctftime is a good way to see when new CTFs ("capture the flag"s; security-focused competitions) are coming up. or, sometimes CTFs post their source code, so you can continue trying them after the CTF is over. i liked Stripe's CTFs when they were going, because they focused on "web stuff", and "web stuff" was all i really knew at the time. if you're more interested in staring at disassembly, there's CTFs focused on that sort of thing too.

azeria has good ARM assembly & exploitation tutorials

also, like, lots of good talks out there; just watching defcon/cansecwest/etc talks until something piques your interest is very fun. i'd die on a battlefield for any of Christopher Domas's talks, but he assumes a lot of specific x86/OS knowledge, lol, so maybe don’t start with that. oh, Julia Evans's blog is honestly probably pretty good for just learning a lot of stuff and really beginner-friendly?

oh and wrt legality... idk, i haven't addressed it here since it hasn't come up in my own work much, tbh. if you're just getting started you're kind of unlikely to Break The Law without, y'know, realizing maybe you're doing something a bit gray-area? and you can cross that bridge when you come to it? Real Hacking TM is way more of a pain-in-the-ass than doing CTFs and such, and you'll learn way more with the latter, so who cares lol just do the fun thing

Lol exactly. I can’t actually figure out a reason why it’s homophobic to say the acronym is LGBT and nothing more. It just doesn’t match up. They were using homophobia as a buzzword, that’s all.

And as I already said… funny how they’re concerned with my “homophobia” despite me not actually saying anything homophobic, but seemingly not concerned about the person who went and compared homophobia to people not liking incest. Wtf, which is more homophobic—“the acronym is LGBT” or “actually not liking incest is the exact same as homophobia!! Also the person you’re talking about told me the term “same sex attraction” is outdated. Which in relation to homosexuality… basically means they’re saying that homosexuality is outdated. That sounds pretty homophobic to me.

I found that last part funny. Yes, I fully own up to being harsh (at least harsher than I usually am) with the other person. But that’s because they were trying to say that not liking incest is the same as thinking homosexuals are perverted child abusers who choose their sexuality. And were using the “lgbt is about unity and non traditional relationships uwu!” To say incest could be included in lgbt. Of course I’m going to be mad!!

yeah yeah yeah may the fourth be with you whatever this is mostly me rambling disjointedly about the bits and pieces of star wars i crammed into my weekend

i think the star war that is the best-made and most watchable on a technical level (including script) is ESB. however, AOTC is my fuckin favorite bc there’s so much fucking nonsense happening all the the goddamn time. incoherent movie with too many sidequests but it all looks sick as shit

my personal history with star wars is: watched it (like many other movies) juuuuust a little too young with my dad as a Bonding Activity (to the silent fury of my mom) but unfortunately got Really Into It. reading expanded universe novels (nearly all of them, i have almost two hundred of them in boxes in a storage unit) was the thing that kept me alive through high school. never really got into the comics, didn’t pick up any of the post-disney-nuking-the-expanded-universe novels. was horribly disappointed by the sequel trilogy and solo. rogue one is all right. however, the mandalorian (weird and cheesy as it is, also i am not immune to pedro pascal) really got me back into this stupid fucking franchise. so i have been taking a rambling walk through things that i remembered liking. all my fun star wars facts are old and outdated but they sure all do live in my brain

listening ‘General Grievous’ off the ROTS soundtrack. this is i think the beginning of my love for heavy low rumbling undercurrents? would not say this has a ‘groove’ per se but there is definitely a forward momentum. love some ominous brass. love the williams panic-spike strings. reading rebel heist (2014, kindt & castiello). these are some of the few loose single-issue comics i own bc i love the covers so much. i hate dealing with bagged and boarded comics bc they’re a pain to store and they’re honestly a pain to read. gimme a trade paperback any day please. rereading these, i liked them less than i remembered- it’s a cool conceit of following an ordinary person in the rebellion as they get caught up in luke & leia & han & chewie’s schemes, and things of course do eventually turn out fine but not before all these regular people go UHHHH WHAT THE FUCK? WTF WTF WTF NOT WHAT I SIGNED UP FOR at some classic skywalker nonsense. can i just say how much i love these covers again tho

watching star wars: the clone wars ran from 2008 to 2020. i watched the first six seasons with my siblings on starwars.com for most of its run, bc there was a brief period of time (i forget whether it was two days after or ten days after) when you could watch each episode for free and we didn’t have cable until well after i went to college.

the second season is where it really starts to hit its stride- i haven’t gone back to watch anything as an adult but i remember liking a lot of the episodes from this season. as an adult, it’s pretty horrifying to realize how fucking stupid the clone wars were from a loss of life and material gain standpoint.

there’s a two-episode arc about the zillo beast, a big kaiju critter, and i only had enough time to watch the first one. the have to protect the oil planet (sorry, i’m getting a note in) so sorry the FUEL RESERVES on the oil planet, so they drop a giant EMP two miles from the city center, but this isn’t a planet with people that look like humans so it’s fine! the important thing is that the fuel is okay.

anyway, this episode is lovely and moody- this is such a stiff-looking show and wreathing everything in cool purple mist and making sure the silhouettes look good is really doing a lot of the work here

look i just really like this framing. the jedi on a stage above everyone else, waist-deep in blood already from the months-old war, the hint of an imperial symbol in the cannon dish, anakin & mace separated by an interior wall and separate hatches. i’m reading too much into season fucking two of the clone wars but i just think it’s neat.

Cravity confessing to their crush

😳nobody asked, nobody probably even cares, but here’s a lil something something for the most underrated boys on the entire planet hehe STAN CRAVITY😳

serim:

serim hosted the best parties, ever since your final years of school you’d always looked forward to his parties and his parties alone. you usually hated parties, all that loud music and obscene outfits, not to mention the copious amounts of alcohol involved and stupid games. but his were different, the music was always lowkey and chill, there was never too many people there, enough to stray away from a “social gathering” but not too many. drinking alcohol was always optional, there was never any pressure to drink or join in on the games. usually you and serim sat out, he hated the games too, they’re “outdated and cringe” according to him, which you had to agree with.

you had received his invite last weekend and you hoped nothing had changed. serim had helped you pick out an outfit that evening, you struggled picking between two choices so you called him and he let you know which he thought you’d look best in. upon arrival, he made sure to make a sarcastic comment about your “fantastic fashion sense” and a real compliment to follow. you walked into the party, you were always the first to arrive anywhere so the lack of people didn’t shock you. “sit down” serim said to you pointing to his new sofa, bold of him to put that out for a party, you thought. “want a drink? a mocktail perhaps?” he asked. you didn’t really have a choice, he was stood there with two strawberry coloured drinks in his hands, ready to hand one over. you asked if you should wait until everyone else arrived, but that’s when he let you know of his sneaky little plan. “it’s been so long since it was just us, i wanted to chill with you alone but i thought you would have thought it was weird if i asked you just to come over. i knew you wouldn’t think it was weird to ask you to a party, so here we are”. you didn’t noticed, during his explaining his arm had found its way over your shoulders. “i’ve been busy too, would have done this sooner, but ya know, idol and all” he joking bragged. your cheeks were going a bright shade of red, you knew it and you couldn’t hide it.

you spent most of the night in that comfortable position, your cheeks were no longer red and you started to feel at home with his arm draped over you. he’d put on a film, it was one of his favourites and had to keep checking that you were watching it. everytime he sensed you were smiling, he cheered a little on the inside, he’d made you happy and that made him happy. he got a little carried away at one point though, kissing your temple in response to your smile at the film. the smile didn’t disappear after the kiss, your eyes didn’t leave the screen, honestly you didn’t know how to act so you were trying to play it cool. meanwhile, serim was spluttering some nonsense by the side of you “i was too engrossed and it was funny and you looked cute and it was too much for me and” his verbal diarrhoea never failed to make you laugh for real. your laugh shut him up too. “what i’m trying to say is, y/n, that i really like you and i’d love for you to be mine so i can kiss you like that more”

allen:

you weren’t sick, you just weren’t feeling yourself. you had been really down recently, with no real reason to explain your lethargic behaviour, apart from homework but what’s new there. you didn’t even have the energy to text anyone, and if you did you only texted your crush, allen. he knew you weren’t doing great just from how you were texting, you never directly told him but he knew. your texts were shorter than usual, you used a lot less emojis and your replies took so much longer than normal. he could tell the effort was there thought, and he knew he was the only person you were texting. at first, he thought he’d done something wrong. he started to become dry too, but you didn’t allow for that and told him that it made you sad when he didn’t talk to you much.

a few days later, he was at your door. you heard him talking to your mother but it was too muffled to understand. you tried hard to figure out what they were saying while you sat slumped over a piece of work you’d been doing for hours. he didn’t tell you he was coming over, maybe he just needs something from your mum, you thought. nope. he knocked at your bedroom door a few seconds later and came in after you said so. your mouth naturally formed a smile, it was the first time you’d properly smiled in weeks. he was so happy to see you smiling. he mirrored the smiled back to you as you sat on the bed and patted the space next to you for him to sit. he revealed a basket from behind him and placed it on your desk, onto of your now irrelevant homework, before taking the seat next to you. his arms immediately wrapped around you and you practically fell into his chest. it was comforting, he smelled nice and his breathing steadied yours. he put his lips on your head, your hair smelt nice, he thought, taking an excessively large and LOUD inhale. you pulled away a shot him a “wtf was that” look. he giggled shyly and told you that he liked the smell of your hair. you shrugged and laughed with him.

“what’s with the basket, little red riding hood?” you asked, not even realising the colour of his hoodie fit perfectly with the name. you laughed a little to yourself, trying to concentrate on his response.

“well i thought i might cheer you up with a few of your favourite things” he said before listing numerous things in the basket. he knew you so well, you thought, you could cry right now. “it’s the least i could do for my favourite person” he whispered shyly. “i hate knowing that your sad” he brushed some hair out of your face and smiled “you’re too pretty to be sad” he paused for a while, he seemed to be debating what to say next. he thought about that one time you got stroppy when he stopped texting as much, using that as his evidence that you felt the same as him. “i really like you, and i know i can make you happy, please will you be mine?” he asked, confidently this time, with your hands now in his and a huge smile on his face.

jungmo:

it was never jungmo’s intention to have a rumour spread about him... or was it???

he realised he had a crush on you a few days after you helped him out with something. you’d been all he thought about since, you were in his dreams, and he loved it. he’s tried sleeping after he woke up just so he could carry on his dreams about you, it never worked and he was always woken up again, but it was worth the try. you felt exactly the same way, you’d liked him for longer, that’s why you helped him out in the first place and it was pretty obvious that you like him at this point, but that was the first time you’d ever felt that spark between you two, that certain electricity.

it didn’t take jungmo long to tell his friends about his crush on you. soon everyone knew, your friends, your parents, even your neighbours fish. you’d heard the rumours, of course you had they were everywhere, but you thought it was just a joke. you tried to avoid jungmo as much as possible, you thought he’d taken advantage of your feelings and so you didn’t want anything to do with him, hoping your liking for him would disappear. it didn’t.

you were heading to the corner shop one afternoon with your friends from class, as you always did on a weekday to stock up on chocolate to get you though the rest of the day. jungmo, who had memorised your day, was stood outside the shop. you thought he’d just be waiting for his friends since this was also his local shop and so you tried to ignore him as much as possible.

“oh y/n, fancy seeing you here” he laughed as if he hadn’t planned this for days. “i think we should talk yeah? what do you say?” he held out his hand, indicating that he was going to take you somewhere else, but you both knew there was nothing around.

your friends were suspicious of his behaviour and so they started to stand up for you. “whatever you have to say you can say it in front of us” was the basic message.

he looked between them for a bit and look at you for confirmation. you nodded and told him to go on. he gulped loudly and started to fidget with the position of his sleeves. “well i just wanted to say that, the rumours are true. i never denied them even though that’s what you thought, i would never” he confessed. you blinked a few times and your friends seemed to be convinced. they left you and him alone, now cheering for this relationship from the shop window. “i actually do like you. like for real. i don’t know how else to convince you, it’s all on you now, y/n, the ball is in your court.”

woobin:

your phone buzzed. you jumped at it rather quickly, despite trying to not seem suspicious in front of your friends. there were 5 of you sat in the practice room, even though you weren’t an idol yourself, you still got on very well with the other 4 and you could all read each other like a book.

“who’s that?” woobin questioned. he pointed at your phone as jungmo hit his arm.

“wow, way to NOT be jealous, woobin” jungmo laughed before going wide eyed, realising he’d pretty much just exposed woobin.

you brushed over the comment, you didn’t want to think too deeply into it and get your hopes up. “it’s just a school friend” you responded to woobin with a smile. “they need a place dance so i said they could come here and practice, i hope you guys don’t mind.” since your friends knew her, well except jungmo and woobin since they didn’t go to school, you thought it would be okay.

when she arrived you all went to say hello and went back to doing your own things. however, you couldn’t help but notice woobin’s wandering eyes falling on your friend and their dancing. you were SO jealous but what could you do. jungmo could tell you were jealous, the short snappy responses really gave it away. in his eyes, the damage had already been done, he’d exposed woobin, why not expose you too, maybe then you’d both stop being blind.

“y/n, can’t woobin just appreciate some good dancing?” he said, bringing everyone’s eyes to you, who was staring at woobin with an angry expression. the room went silent apart from the slight music from your friends headphones. after a few throat clears and awkward exists, it ended up just being you and woobin in the room, this was officially the most humiliating moment of your life.

he looked at you and then back at the ground again, his eyes looking focused on one tiny spec of dust on the floor, he seemed to be concentrating on it so hard but he was actually just trying to form a cohesive sentence in his brain to express his feelings to you.

“i’d never look at anyone else the way i look at you, i know you don’t notice it, but i adore you” you said out loud. he didn’t mean for it to come out, but after you told him you liked him too he was actually pretty grateful that he said it.

wonjin:

it was a big birthday for you and you were getting ready for your meal. you invited over your best friend, wonjin, to get ready with you at your house. your room was a mess, there was barely room for two people to stand without breaking something or stepping on clothes. this was rare for you, but you couldn’t find the outfit you had planned to wear and so the only option was to turn your whole room over, with help from wonjin of course. you finally found it and went into the bathroom to put it on while wonjin put on his freshly ironed shirt. he was excited for you, butterflies going crazy in his stomach.

you returned back to your room with the outfit on, a little higgledy-piggledy but nothing that wonjin couldn’t sort for you. you then realised you needed to paint your nails. first attempt: failure. it went all over your fingers as well as your nails, there was no way you could go out like that.

“i can do them for you” wonjin stated, sitting besides you on your bed in front of your desk. you thought the gesture was sweet, but you were too stressed to let anyone touch you right now. “y/n, let me paint your nails” wonjin was practically begging at this point, and you couldn’t deny it was kind of de-stressing you. you handed him the brush and bottle and let him do his thing. “you hands are so pretty, y/n” he complimented you for the nth time that afternoon. he did a pretty good job of your nails, they looked really nice, way better than yours looked before. you thanked him and put them under the light so they would dry quickly.

the whole time he was painting your nails, wonjin was just thinking about what your hands would look like in his. it wasn’t the first time he’d thought about it, certainly wouldn’t be the last either.

your nails had finished drying pretty quickly, almost as quick as wonjin come up with a master plan on how to hold your hand for they first time.

“let’s compare hand sizes” he giggled, holding his hand up. yours pressed against his, his slightly bigger than yours but not much. after laughing about it for a short while, you didn’t even noticed he’d interlocked his hand with yours.

the laughter stopped briefly and he kissed your hand, “that tiny hand of yours compared to mine is ALMOST as cute as i think you are as a whole” he confessed. “happy birthday, angel” he wanted to kiss your lips this time, and so he waited for any sort of sign from you to do so.

you smiled and said thank you in a sweet tone, and that was enough of a sign.

minhee:

minhee was the most handsome boy you knew, the most handsome boy you could ever imagine even. he’d gotten into contact with you recently after accidentally voting for something on your instagram story when he didn’t mean to. the picture was of you, it was edited in a pretty way and you wanted your friends’ opinion of your new style of editing. after apologising, he kept the conversation going, it was unexpected but you didn’t mind, you tried not to let it die out either. you still hadn’t spoken in person though, there were lots of opportunities where you could have, but you were just too nervous and he radiated awkwardness. you were happy just texting, even if you were in the same room. you’d made eye contact a few times, exchanged a few funny looks in response to the other’s message.

you were setting the table for dinner one evening when you received a message from minhee that made you p a n i c.

“why have we never spoken in person?” it read. it only then dawned on you that you’d been talking for the best part of a year and you were still only pretty much online friends. you stopped laying out the cutlery and stood with your phone in your hands, preparing to type.

he waited at his end for a response. he was sat on his couch, his heart was beating faster than ever but he tried to remain chilled on the outside. when you didn’t respond for 5 minutes, typing and clearing thousands of messages, he took it upon himself to be the bold one.

“come over, we can have a sleep over if you want. it will be cute” he wrote. you panicked once again, it was kinda extreme for the first time talking but you agreed anyway. why did you do that, you thought only after you sent it. you hadn’t even asked your parents. somehow you convinced them to let you sleep over, it wasn’t minhee house that you’d mentioned specifically but pft details what are they?!

your dad dropped you off at the end of the street and you walked the short distance to minhee’s house. he was stood waiting for you at the window in a cute pair of pjs. when you got into his house, no one could shut you two up. you talked for hours, laughing about how weird your online friendship was. in a second though, the laughter stopped, his face became serious and he looked you dead in the eyes.

“when i voted on that thing, i wasn’t lying” he said. you wrecked your brain trying to remember what it was but you couldn’t. he went on to explain, gathering you couldn’t remember “you posted a selfie with the options “pretty or not” and i voted pretty of course. i meant it. you’re really pretty, the prettiest person i’ve ever seen maybe” he looked at you, his eyes were full of hope. you couldn’t stop yourself from confessing back, it felt right and there was nothing you wanted more than to be with him. once the seriousness was over, you corrected him on what the voting was actually for, but he didn’t care.

hyeongjun:

the boy you now knew as one of your closest friends was one of the first people to talk to you at your new school. you’ll never forget your first day, he came up to you with a bright smile and said hello. from that moment on you’d had a crush on him, he was a total cutie how could you not. since that day you’d spent a lot of time together. you studied together, you snacked together, sometimes you even napped together. he was perfect and you couldn’t ask for a better friend, you just wish you were more than that. he did too. ever since he laid eyes on you, you were the only person occupying his brain.

after one particularly long day at school, he invited you over to his house to chill for a bit. you were going to say no but then again you didn’t really want to go home to your sister and her new boyfriend doing unspeakable things while your parents were at work. you let out a shy yes and sent you sister a text telling her where you were.

you arrived at the dorms, the others, who you were well acquainted with, said a quick hello before getting back to their prior activities. you looked tired and so hyeongjun’s first suggestion was to nap. you felt bad, just going to his place to sleep, so you refused the offer, instead suggesting you played some video games or watched tv. a concerned hyeongjun decided the latter was probably better right now, he couldn’t force a loss on mario kart at the best of times, nevermind when you were sleepy. you slouched slightly on the couch, hyeongjun doing the same, controller in his hand. he hadn’t even picked a show yet when he felt your head hit his shoulder. he smiled at you and turned the tv off. he watched you for a little while, occasionally pushing your hair behind your ear when needed. he called you beautiful many times, he even at one point kissed your nose.

“i really like you y/n, you’re the sweetest person ever, the best” he whispered to you before making sure no one heard him in the dorm, he couldn’t deal with their teasing about this, anything but this.

you smiled a little bit, laughing almost, but only out of awkwardness. yes you were tired, that’s why you put your head on his shoulder, it didn’t mean you were asleep.

he shot up immediately, very embarrassed. “there’s no need to be like that, hyeongjun, it’s okay, i think you’re the sweetest person too, and i really like you”.

taeyoung:

every year you wished you received a valentine’s card from someone who wasn’t your mum who felt sorry for you. you didn’t make it obvious like some people at your school, you didn’t constantly check your locker, that was just obsessive, you thought. there was one boy at school who everyone fawned over, taeyoung. he was known for being very secretive about his crushes though, he never told anyone anything about his love life. you couldn’t help but fall for him. he did a dance performance once and that was it, whipped. his eyes were cute and his smile even cuter. you’d exchange eye contact in the corridor sometimes, maybe even a small “hi”. in class you’d talk to each other on the odd occasion, the new seating plan now making that more often, but you weren’t particularly close. you didn’t think you were good enough to even be friends with him, but he tried his hardest to make it happen.

valentine’s day rolled around again, friday 14th february, it was your last year in school, your last chance to receive some cliche card or letter or SOMETHING. your day started off pretty normally, you walked to school and arrived at your first lesson, however, your teacher had plans to make your day much much worse. “presentations next tuesday, it will go towards your final grade, work with the people on your table, good luck”. you looked up and your eyes met with the boy who sat opposite you, taeyoung. “sorry, we have a thing next tuesday” you heard the twins (that sat on your table too) announce. that just left you and taeyoung to present. you worked hard together, twins included, in the limited lesson time, but had concluded that you’d have to finish it out of school hours, just the two of you, since their “thing” conveniently spread all over the course of the next week.

you tried not to think about it much during the rest of the day and decided having fun with your friends at lunch was more important, you’d even forgotten the date, it seemed that these presentations had shook the whole school. you went to your locker at the end of the day when a small note came flying out. you knew whose hand writing it was immediately, taeyoung.

“you don’t need to worry about this presentation, y/n. i saw how nervous you looked when miss bitch told us about it, so i’ll do all the talking, it’s okay. we could finish writing it at that coffee shop down the street, a date maybe? then i can tell you about how much i’ve liked you for years hehe”

upon reading the note you texted him a “yes!!!” straight away and headed to the coffee shop with a spring in your step.

seongmin:

your best friend seongmin had asked you to prom, as friends, he made sure you knew you were just going as friends. you had basically made a deal that you would go together, even if either of you had proper dates, because you didn’t want to leave school without being together that whole magical evening.

seongmin showed up at your house wearing a black suit and a red tie, accompanied by his mother who had a huge smile on her face. the pair of you had a very awkward conversation while your parents watched over you two, as you do, before taking a few photos together. you’d be lying if you said his arm around your waist didn’t bring butterflies to your stomach. you were sure one of these days you’d accidentally reveal your crush on him, but you hoped to GOD it wasn’t this evening, you didn’t want to ruin it.

you went into your room to grab your phone and some make up, just incase. seongmin followed.

“can you put me some lip tint on, please?” he asked, glaring at your lips with his sparkling eyes. you couldn’t say no to him. he puckered his lips as you gently brushed the tint over them, you really wanted to kiss him right now. “you know” he was shut up by you continuing to lather his lips in red. he pushed your hand away in a dramatic way, rather expected given it was seongmin. “you know, you look really good tonight” he finished. you thanked him and returned the compliment. he fiddled with the closed lip tint that you threw on the bed next to him while you tried to find your phone. “i promised myself i’d tell you this before prom and i still have time so here goes” you were only half listening to him, still panicked because you couldn’t find your phone. “i really like you, y/n, and i think we should go to prom together... as a couple? if you want to, i don’t know why you wouldn’t but...” he let out a breath to shut himself up as his eyes followed you around your room. you didn’t react at first, only processing what he said about a minute after. you stopped searching and looked over to him sat on your bed. “i’d love to” you practically shouted, running over to hug him. he stood up and hugged you back. you noticed your phone on the bed, right where he was sat, but you didn’t really care at that point anymore, nothing was more important than this moment.

So Ally revealed that ot4 had another studio and christmas album. But the label didn't let them release them. And that's why the band broke up. I'm sorry but that doesn't fit the official legal deals. And the nda that are most likely still in place. So I'm confused wtf is going on. What's real and what's fake and getting sold for drama. To keep this shit fake faud going. I mean no disrespect but ot4 last album didn't do well. we know they didn't promote them. But streams? filling concerts?

I'm not an expert on legal contracts but everything that happened with the group in terms of that type and work after Camila left the band was a fucking disaster. Starting with the girls fighting over having the Fifth Harmony brand against Simon Cowell. They have a percentage of that brand that the girls fought to have, it is said that Lauren was the one who started that, and we already know how it all ended. Epic was putting all the golden eggs in Camila's basket and Fifth Harmony was sidelined, instead betting on them as well and winning double. They did not. The disintegration of the band was a matter of time, that meant when the contract expired. Lauren herself said it in an interview and I can bet she was punished for it: We are together on a contract. I think Ally's book has half truths and truths that are unfortunately not unbiased because they are written from her point of view and not from the five girls. And yes, I say five because Fifth Harmony (want the ot4 or no)t WERE and they WILL ALWAYS BE FIVE GIRLS. You can't trust a half-story version of the story and this is nothing against Ally at all, but telling a story that also affected four other girls where we don't have any version is a half-story. I just hope the years go by when the contracts are outdated and the five girls get together and write the story together. With all the shit they went through included. That is a story that would be worth reading because it could really tell what we have always known: that the music industry is a shit hole, fart and corrupt that handles its artists like puppets and gets rid of them when they can no longer remain money-making machines. The rest is incomplete, anon.

Hi. League lore is a nightmare that contradicts itself and has the nasty habit of spawning fan theories that, while interesting and honestly sometimes more clever than canonical content, are most likely not intended to be canonical.

What I’m talking about mostly is this thing that I really started thinking about in earnest yesterday, although I think I’ve had it on the backburner for a while. The thing in question is people taking all of League’s lore to be simultaneously canonical - assuming that it’s part of a grand overarching plan, or treating it as if it was all written at the same time. This is... not a good way to approach League lore, although it may seem it.

Example one: the theory that I heard that Annie’s parents actually moved to the Noxian borderlands to keep Annie safe from the academy Rell was held in. (Annie wasn’t born at the time they moved, but magic seems to work along familial lines in League and her mom was a witch, so it seems a safe bet.)

On the surface, cool theory! It works if Rell’s been in the academy since age 8, which isn’t exactly specified but is definitely possible. Annie’s parents could potentially have heard about missing kids and assumed something bad was up. Unfortunately, while it may make sense when you take lore as a combined bundle, it doesn’t make sense if you look at the out-of-universe timeline. Annie’s lore update came in 2018 and Rell came out about two years later. We know the champion production timelines are about a year (I think? Please correct me if I’m wrong), so Rell probably started taking shape in 2019. This means that the whole Noxian sigil magic evil academy thing probably wasn’t on Riot’s radar when they made Annie’s update - and, besides, her lore has always portrayed her as coming from an area adjacent to/on the outskirts of Noxus. It’s much more likely that Riot just rehashed elements of her original lore into something that worked in their modern setting, instead of them having this master plan where the true reason Annie’s out in the borderlands is to keep her safe.

Now, since Riot does often seem to have a habit of taking concepts from fans in one way or another... Maybe there will be another Annie lore that ties the academy in. It would certainly make the world feel more connected. But at the moment, it’s a fan theory that was probably 99.99% not intended to be canon, because the timelines don’t match up.

(Also, I think Rell lore could have been handled better. Not even from a “Swain wtf are you letting the Rose do” standpoint, but from a character standpoint from Rell. But that’s an aside. Also also, how long has Swain been in power? Annie’s lore has Darkwill in power 8 years ago. Also also also, I think a lot of people who subscribe to this theory might not think about the fact that Rell is 8 years older than Annie - they may see all the events as happening simultaneously, since there isn’t exactly a canonical timeline. If that makes sense?)

Example two: hi, Viktor and Blitzcrank lore.

Blitzcrank’s lore directly contradicts Viktor’s new lore, showing that Riot isn’t exactly interested in maintaining continuity. Maybe it’s just for champions that are less popular, but whatever.

Viktor’s lore update (which I think came in 2016, along with Piltover-Zaun unification? I wasn’t active in League then, so I don’t recall) describes Blitzcrank in the following manner:

In the midst of his studies in Piltover, a major chem-spill devastated entire districts of Zaun, and Viktor returned home to offer his help in the rescue efforts. By grafting a sophisticated series of cognitive loops upon existing automata-technology, he crafted a custom-built golem, Blitzcrank, to help in the clean-up. Blitzcrank was instrumental in saving scores of lives and appeared to develop a level of sentience beyond anything Viktor had envisioned.

Even with the spill contained, Viktor remained in Zaun to help those afflicted by the released toxins. With the golem's help, he attempted to use his techmaturgical brilliance to save those whose lives had been blighted by the spill. Their attempt was ultimately unsuccessful in preventing more deaths, and the two parted ways.

Blitzcrank’s lore currently (circa 2019) does this:

Useless to all but one person. The inventor Viktor discovered the abandoned golem and, seeing the potential still within the inert chassis, inspiration struck. Viktor began a series of experiments, seeking to improve the automaton by introducing a new element that would elevate it far beyond the original scope of its creation.

Hextech.

Implanting a priceless hextech crystal sourced from the deserts of Shurima into the chassis of the forsaken golem, Viktor waited with baited breath as the machine rumbled to life.

Zero mention of at what time this occurs. Zero mention of Blitzcrank being designed specifically for a rescue effort. The lore continues to diverge. The post’s long enough already, but you can read it and see for yourself. Blitzcrank’s 3rd lore (see wiki) is slightly more in line with Viktor’s, but still doesn’t make sense if you try to read it in concert with Viktor’s lore:

An ambitious young inventor known as Viktor longed to create a durable machine that could clean more effectively and eliminate the need for costly repairs. He gathered broken parts from the retired golems, avoiding the flashier components popular among his peers. Even employing an assemblage of unwanted materials, Viktor designed a more resilient machine.

He named his creation Blitzcrank, hoping the golem would quickly eradicate all waste and become far greater than the sum of his discarded parts. After instilling in Blitzcrank a relentless desire to serve the people of Zaun by removing the toxins in their path, Viktor sent him into the Sump to help.

What’s going on here? I don’t know. Also, it’s 2021 and I really wish Riot would stop using “golem” as a synonym for a robot. I know that fantasy generally does this, but like. Come on.

Example three: Talon’s lore.

It hasn’t been updated since 2015, man. I really can’t take the idea of Riot having some master overarching plan that everyone fits into when Talon (and I think some of the Void monsters?) hasn’t gotten an update since they snipped the Institute out of his lore.

TL;DR: League lore is piecemeal and any attempt to make any lore that came out about more than a year or two apart fit in with each other is probably not going to work. It may spawn some interesting theories, but those theories probably weren’t intended. It may also just directly contradict character backstories. It may also just be completely outdated and incoherent in the modern narrative.

Stuff like this is why I have trouble taking any lore analysis channels on YouTube seriously, because it really does feel like they don’t acknowledge the out-of-universe fact that Riot really doesn’t seem to have an overarching plan for more than about two years at a time. Maybe they have individual plans for each area - even that looks unlikely, considering Viktor and Blitzcrank’s issue - but something larger? I really doubt it.

Maybe this will all change with Ruination and Riot’s second attempt at doing a Big Event. Maybe they’ll realize that there’s at least one character lore contradiction (I don’t read all the lore, so while I have no doubt that there’s more contradictions I’ve really only spotted Viktor and Blitzcrank) and try to shore that up with minor edits. But at the moment it’s kind of a mess that sometimes feels like the fans think more about the impacts of the lore than the writers do.

My opinion on Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous (SPOILERS)

Like many people interested in the Jurassic franchise, I binge-watched that show back in september and here are my thoughts. First of all, I precise that I had no expectations for the series as the combo Jurassic World + kid show didn’t attracted me at all, and the trailers have done nothing but confirm my fears.

Let’s start by the positive: - Amidst the cringefest that the first episodes were, the scenes with Darius back home stand out from the rest by their quality as they are centred more on drama and character development and not on clumsy comedy like the scenes on Nublar. The idea of getting an access to Jurassic World and Camp Cretaceous as a reward for beating that virtual reality game reminded me the recruitment of Eli Wallace by the SGC at the very beginning of Stargate Universe. - Starting from the beginning of the season’s second half, the series gets better and a little more mature in its unfolding and writing, up to the point where it doesn’t seem targeted for young children but rather young teens. Some dumb scenes remain however (like the one of the geneticist Eddie, abandoned in the lab with the sole company of his birthday cake). - There is a few action and suspenseful scenes that aren’t bad in the second half with, among other things, a hide-and-seek game with the Indominus amidst the containers, a part in the tunnels that can remind some people of Telltale’s game, a monorail attack by the pteranodons which should have deserved a live-action treatment, and a climax in a storage area where the protagonists have to use their wits in order to defeat the carnotaur and escape from the underground network. On the matter of the carnotaur, one can note a nice paleontological reference with its difficulty to turn when it is chasing prey. - Of all of the characters, Roxie is the most realistic, responsible and reasonable one (and the only tolerable one in the first episodes). And let’s bring now the negative aspects: - On the matter of the original soundtrack, I don’t remember any of the original themes sadly. As I had the same problem when I viewed The Witcher though (I didn’t liked its first season but I rather well appreciated its soundtrack following a separated listening), I will wait for the release of the soundtrack before criticizing it further. - The first episodes are a total farce with a succession of all kinds of nonsenses with the bunch of stereotypical buffoons that the kids are that are involved in stupid acts by the night of their first day, acts that fall under Reversed Darwinism (the survival of the most idiotic like Grant would say in Jurassic Park 3) and that gave me the desire to give some slaps and send those Kennys to a firing squad (for the crimes of property destruction and, above all, endangering dinosaurs and employees); the infringements during the activities of hygiene and security rules that are applied in many theme parks and laboratories around the world (with the kids wandering around in the lab and touching to everything in a total dissidence; running down a zipline and brushing past brachiosaurs...); the counsellor Dave which talks to Wu like if he was an old pal of his while Wu is one of the highest corporate executive around and someone famous and respected in-universe; Wu being depicted with the subtlety of a fat beer-drunk sea lion (with his mannerisms and attitude worthy of a James Bond villain, we know right away that he is bad); cartoony action scenes (I mean bloody hell. Look at that Parasaurolophus that jumps off the jeep’s roof like he was a fookin’ kangaroo while the jeep itself wasn’t miraculously crushed under the hadrosaur’s weight); the employees and the park’s security being shitty (one enter so easily in the underground network that Biosyn could organise rave parties there right under InGen’s nose; Darius and Kenji being left with no supervision in the middle of the jungle while they are supposed to shovel shit as a punishment); the dinosaurs that passes too as incompetent for failing to kill the kids while such situations in real-life or in the first films would have unforgiving or barely forgiving but only at a certain cost. - Despite the ordeals they are going through, the kids seems to be never traumatised or at least shaken like the Murphys, Kelly Malcolm or Maisie were respectively in JP, TLW and FK since here, they seems to be in shock for a moment or two before starting again to squabble or quipping once they are away from danger. - At the end of the monorail attack scene, I thought that the writers had the balls to kill off Ben and I would have tipped my hat to this narrative decision and give more credit to this kid show if we didn’t had the reveal at the end that he was still alive. At the end, we just got another Billy Brennan situation. - Bumby is useless in this season, aside from encouraging toy sales and being the show’s cute caution and still, it’s relative as her closeups along with Brooklynn’s rapy face in episode 2 have scared me more than the predators’ attacks in the season’s second half. And her growth rate is so fucked up as she hatch in episode 2 before reappearing in episode 5 I think which is supposed to be set two days later, where she is already the size of a bulldog. And the scene where she cries while the kids are being kicked off the lab (for understandable reasons) is so ridiculous... - Aside from in the action and suspenseful scenes mentioned above in the positive aspects, the use and depicting of dinosaurs is either anecdotal, either WTF with the Sinoceratops being almost as gentle as a lamb (try to do with a hippo or a rhino what the Kennys did with the sino, I wouldn’t mind some funny antics...). I’m not a fan of the bioluminescent Parasaurolophus and their scene either. It seems like they wanted to copy the Na’vi River Journey’s attraction from Animal Kingdom in Orlando, with semi-aquatic parasaurs worthy of some outdated depictions from the last century. - Visually speaking, the universe and the artistic direction are poor. The jungle has the same look everywhere on the island (with trees of average height being relatively spaced from one another while the ground is covered with grass) and its scenery never seem foreboding or ominous while Isla Nublar and Isla Sorna were, in some way, entire characters in the films that sometimes aroused an eerie sense of mystery and danger, at east in the original trilogy and Fallen Kingdom. The park itself is quite empty too, even before the evacuation. There is only scene with a large amount of people and the latter seems to all share the same model and the same animation in addition of being blurred (probably as a camouflage for the lack of budget) and we don’t believe in this world as nothing grand comes out of the visited locations (aside from maybe the eponymous Camp Cretaceous) and that everything seems so bland, with even the employees being of the same corpulence, age group and behaviour except for a few exceptions. - Finally, let’s discuss about the coherence with the Jurassic World film, of which this show is supposed be a canon interquel. Even though if there is several nods to some of the latter’s events (Masrani’s helicopter is seen a couple of times; the Kennys take the ACU’s van; they walk past Zach and Gray’s destroyed gyrosphere and the killed ankylosaur’s body...) as well as other materials of the franchise, including JP3 and Masrani Global website, like if the show wanted to tell us “Hey look! I did my homework!” in order to please the fans. It’s one thing to make references to the rest of the saga and it’s easy actually, but it’s another to use them for something else than just fan-service. Despite all this, Camp Cretaceous has its share of inconsistencies with Jurassic World. I won’t list them all since it wouldn’t be that interesting but among other things, we have the mention of fences falling apart across the entire island while nothing like this happened in JW (it seems they mixed up the JP and JW incidents) or at least not on this scale; the kids visit a lab somewhere north of the park whose existence seems a bit off as the Innovation Center’s lab can do everything that lab does, in addition of housing Wu’s secret lab; the surroundings of the mosasaur lagoon which seems empty by the end of the afternoon while chronologically speaking, the scene is supposed to happen just after the pterosaurs attack (and thus the area should be crawling with employees that are looking for eventual late visitors, or the still running security cameras could have spotted the kids) and why did those foolish Kennys didn’t thought of going to the nearby hotels right after the ordeal with the mosasaur instead of hanging around in the bleachers up until sunset, hotels where a large number of visitors are supposed to be found up until quite late in the night according to the Jurassic World film? Anyway, Camp Cretaceous might have got a kick up the backside halfway through and the quality of the episodes did increased little by little but the whole season stays nevertheless mediocre and the viewing of the series is honestly quite dispensable, especially if you were disappointed by the Jurassic World films. Some will probably tell me that I’m being too hard with a kids show but actually, the fact that it is targeted for kids is no excuse for some flaws like a lack of ambition in the artistic direction, the shitty humour or the wtf scenes. Whether a work is for adults, for all audiences, or for kids, the creative investment and the work quality should stay the same.
