I GOT IT. or at least good enough? so for some reason loading in my savestates wasn’t working. but fortunately for me i’ve also been in-game saving too just like on the side. i didn’t know if it actually mattered or not. cuz every time i’d boot up the rom again and actually sit through the title screen it appeared that the in-game save file was blank so i was like ok whatever. but still i was out there saving the game for funsies. and now i’m very glad for it!! i mean i did lose a tiny bit of progress bc there was a slight discrepancy between my last savestate save and in-game save but like. sheesh. after the heart attack i was having about having to replay the entire game i don’t mind re-fighting a single easy gym leader. i don’t mind at all
#now i just have to ensure that i NEVER do what i somehow did earlier EVER again#and keep multiple copies of my save data in multiple places on the computer#in different places and via different file formats#and keep on in-game saving!!!#goldie plays pokémon black

It seems to me that the trouble with digital is it's all still physical objects. Maybe there can be copies of things and they can travel very fast and be in multiple places and be compressed down and stored in unthinkably tinier places and accessed cleverly and take forms we could barely conceive of before we met computers.
But it's still an SSD card, a big server, a powerplant, physical equipment to read a bunch of information inscribed into a very high tech substrate (stuff!)
Old film negatives or plates aren't nearly as useful until you use a bunch of old processes, materials and skills to pull prints from them. Even digitisation requires both image capture tools (objects) and software (runs on objects) to replicate a process that was originally made with objects, and which is therefore modelled on data from having those objects.
Lots of people say 'oh get rid of manuals and physical books and photo albums and go digital' and sure. Tactility aside it's great option for space. Fold your two hundred book library into a flash drive the size of a postage stamp like an old man folding the broadsheet down to a postcard. Saves on a lot of dusting and apartments are pretty small. (First person to use this as an excuse to pile on konmari is getting hit with a saucepan btw)
But putting it all in the digital space is treated like using a magic hammerspace where it's safe, retrievable and doesn't rely on the physical world at all. Just your passwords which are now tied to you specific phone, your accounts which run on servers which are just computers you don't own. Your evergreen file formats. Your hard drives which will not fail of course, and will always be backed up to other infallible hard drives and other people's computers and Google searches which definitely find that blog (dead) which had a link (dead) to a file on a Google drive (deleted) that one time. Electricity which will always be on and legacy software that will definitely still run on the new hardware because the old ones long gone, and WiFi which is a basic utility so will always be flowing and so so much water in the big server farms run by the monopolies bigger than nations.
It just seems. Like a grown-up, acceptable equivalent to stuffing a bunch of stuff under your bed so you don't have to think about it. Because even if you ignore the monopolies and the exploitation for water and minerals, and the planned obsolescence. Isn't it all still depending on stuff? Physical, very dense stuff. That needs to be kept dry and cool and powered on and connected and very Not Near big magnets? But it's still objects to look after.
It feels like when we're selling each other the idea of keeping everything 'digital' there's an undercurrent of 'because it loopholes having to think about the inherent ephemerality, storage requirements and maintenance needs of physical objects'. But just as computing can transcend the forms of the physical, so is it dependent on it. I'm worried what's happening given that as a broader culture we pretend that it removes thinking about objects, rather than adding a whole new bunch of objects to look after.
And at some point that file in that file format on that cloud server or storage device will be as inaccessible to you as an undeveloped glass plate negative is now. That day is coming sooner than we think. And pretending it's not still made of physical stuff is contributing to the narratives that let it get pushed here faster.
(Also my computer harddrive died last week. Pah.)
#talking freds#sorry i said flash drive im old. ehat do they even call them now. thumb drives?#sorry i said 200 book library I'm dyscalculic not saying ANYTHING in particular about your big or small library i dont even know which it i#better peiple than me have said this already#but im insomniac and i saw an article about glass negatives and got thinking#long post#my entire teenage music libary is on a semi corrupted ipod classic and jalf of it disappeared from the itunes Library at some point#i just. dont listen to lot of music now. i do listen. but not close. its not the same.

Portable Outlook Mac Backups with Mail Backup X: Built to Move
Data that lives in one machine, tied to one setup, often becomes fragile. You may not notice this until something shifts, such as acquiring a new device, changing your workspace, traveling, or needing a repair. Outlook for Mac does its job well inside its own environment, but its data doesn’t travel easily. Mail Backup X shifts the balance by creating portable Outlook Mac backups independent of the client or the system.

You can take your archives with you, store them on multiple platforms, and open them independently of Outlook. This creates a working model where your information remains accessible wherever you are.
Setting Up an Outlook Mac Backup That Moves with You
So, first, let’s see how exactly you can do that with the help of “Mail Backup X.”
Begin by opening Mail Backup X and clicking on “My Backup Profiles.” Select “Add New Backup” to begin.
Choose Outlook Mac and then the tool will locate and link to the local database without needing a manual path.
Pick the folders you want to back up.
Give the backup profile a name that reflects its purpose or contents.
Select a storage location. This might be your Mac’s internal drive, an external USB drive, or a connected cloud account. All options create the same .mbs format.
Since portability is the goal, use cloud or external drives as your primary or mirror location. You can add one or more mirrors by clicking the “Add Mirror” button and selecting additional destinations.
Set the schedule. Automatic backups can detect new emails and act as needed. Recurring backups can run at fixed times, every hour, daily, weekly, based on your preference.
If you plug in a USB drive and register it, the tool can automatically copy your Outlook Mac backups to that drive each time it connects.
Click save. The first backup starts immediately. You can continue using Outlook Mac while it runs in the background.
Accessing Your Portable Outlook Mac backups
Once the backup of your Outlook Mac data exists, you can move it anywhere. If you open the software on another Mac or a Windows PC with Mail Backup X installed, you can import the archive using the “Open Archive” button. This creates a new profile in the viewer, where your emails appear exactly as they were backed up, folders intact, attachments preserved, timestamps in place.
You can search through the archive as though it were still part of your live email. The search bar handles both basic queries and complex expressions. This makes it easy to locate a specific piece of information, even inside a large, multi-year archive.
Exporting to Other Formats Without Losing Portability
Let’s say you’re no longer using Outlook or need to switch to a different client. The export feature allows you to convert your Outlook Mac backed up data into formats compatible with the most popular email platforms. You can export an entire folder to PST for Microsoft Outlook or choose EML files for clients like Thunderbird or Apple Mail.
If you want to create a fixed record for documentation, legal, or archival purposes, exporting to PDF offers a practical option.
Each export happens within the viewer itself. Select the folders or messages you want, choose the format, and designate an output location. The software handles the conversion, keeps the structure intact, and reports progress in real time.
How Portable Are Mail Backup X Archives?
Q: What format does the tool use for Outlook Mac backups?
On macOS, each backup profile creates a compressed archive saved as an .mbs package. This archive contains your backed-up Outlook Mac data and can include all folder structures, metadata, and attachments. Unlike standard exports from Outlook, this format is recognized by the tool on any supported machine. That means you can copy it to another system, open it using the app there, and continue working with it just as before.
Q: How can you access the contents of an archive on a new computer?
You launch Mail Backup X on the new system, click “Open Archive,” and select the .mbs file. The app then reindexes the archive, rebuilding the folder view and search-index, so everything appears as it did on the original machine. There is no need to restore anything to Outlook or import it into another mail client. The archive opens as a viewable and searchable profile within the app. Note, seeing the contents of backed up package can also be done through the free version of the tool.
Q: What makes this system more flexible than native Outlook export options?
Outlook’s own export tools produce files like .olm, which are not readable outside the client itself. Mail Backup X archives are readable without Outlook, searchable through the built-in viewer, and transferable between Mac and Windows. If you use different devices at home and at work, or if your machine changes, you won’t lose access to your mail.
Q: Can the tool export Outlook Mac backed up data to standard formats for use elsewhere?
Yes. You can export individual messages or entire folders or the entire profiles into formats like PST, EML, MBOX, and PDF. This means you can migrate your email data into a different client or share selected parts without sending the whole backup. The export function doesn’t require you to unzip or decode the archive manually. Everything happens from within the interface, with folder selection, target format, and destination handled in a few steps.
The Value of Data That Travels Well
There’s freedom in knowing your data is not locked to one interface, one operating system, or one machine. For people who work across platforms, this means fewer technical blocks and smoother handoffs. If you’re handing over a project to someone else, switching devices, or simply archiving years of communication, you want that archive to open and function wherever needed.
Mail Backup X does not build walled gardens. It gives you a way to create Outlook Mac backups that are light to carry and easy to read. From compressed .mbs files to cloud mirrors, from USB snapshots to export tools, everything is shaped with mobility in mind.
A free trial version is available for you to explore these features and see how portable your Outlook Mac email backups can become. The process starts simply but opens into a much larger system of access and control. Once you see your archive appear, complete, structured, and untied from your machine, you begin to understand what portability really looks like.
You don’t start over each time the device changes, or the setup evolves. With Mail Backup X, the Outlook Mac backup remains intact, readable, and ready, wherever your work moves next. What stays with you, in the end, is access without interruption.

How to protect your cryptocurrency wallet: top tips and security strategies
How do I protect my cryptocurrency wallet?
Securing your cryptocurrency wallet will allow you to keep your digital assets safe and benefit from them for a long time. In order to do this, you need to follow a number of rules. Choosing between hot and cold wallets and using multi-factor authentication will greatly increase the security of your funds. Regular software updates and being alert to phishing attempts will help prevent threats.
Choosing between a hot wallet and a cold wallet
When it comes to cryptocurrency security, the distinction between a hot and cold wallet is crucial. A hot wallet is connected to the internet, which facilitates fast transactions. Despite its convenience, it remains vulnerable to online attacks such as phishing or malware. Therefore, it is important to utilise additional security measures such as multi-factor authentication.
Conversely, a cold wallet is offline. This greatly reduces the risk of cyberattacks, but makes transactions less responsive. The choice depends on how often users access their assets and the amounts. For long-term storage of large sums, a cold wallet is a safer option.
Optimal use of a hot wallet
Utilising the power of a cold wallet
Although less convenient for day-to-day transactions, a cold wallet offers better protection against piracy by securely storing private keys on a physical medium such as a secure USB stick. For added security, some prefer to store the device in a bank safe or other secure location. Periodically transferring a predetermined amount from a cold wallet to a hot wallet can be a smart strategy for controlling funds and keeping them accessible. This approach helps balance security and usability.
Use of physical and paper wallets
In addition to traditional digital solutions, physical and paper wallets provide additional layers of security for cryptocurrencies by offering a secure means of storage. These cold wallets are resistant to computer viruses that can compromise a regular computer. A paper wallet involves printing the public and private keys on a piece of paper, eliminating any digital exposure. However, such wallets require careful handling to avoid loss of sensitive data.
Optimising physical portfolios
Hardware wallets require regular checks to maintain their physical and operational integrity. It is important to back up keys regularly and store them in different locations to protect them from possible damage. Also, the hardware wallet interface should be simple and secure to minimise the risk of transaction errors.
Proper management of a paper wallet
A paper wallet should be stored in a controlled environment: in a dry place, away from direct light and heat sources. It is important to use paper and ink that is resistant to wear and tear so that the information remains legible for many years. To increase asset security, it is recommended to have multiple secure copies in case the original is damaged or lost.
Basic principles of cryptocurrency portfolio security
Regardless of the type of portfolio chosen, it is important to follow proven security principles to protect your cryptocurrency investments. One of the most important rules is to never divulge your private keys, they should always remain private. It is very important to use up-to-date anti-virus software and be constantly vigilant against phishing attempts. Getting into the habit of checking destination addresses when making transactions can save you from costly mistakes and fraud.
Training and keeping up-to-date with knowledge is essential to protecting digital assets. Participating in online forums, visiting cybersecurity blogs, and keeping up with the latest software updates can provide valuable knowledge that can prevent financial loss. The constant technological advances in blockchain means that staying up-to-date is not only beneficial, but essential.
Conclusion
Protecting cryptocurrency assets requires careful adherence to security measures, such as choosing trusted wallets and regularly updating software. Using multi-factor authentication and key backups are important steps to minimise risks. It is also important to regularly check that anti-virus programmes are up to date and be alert to phishing attempts. Ongoing education and cybersecurity awareness will help you keep your digital assets safe.

@black-lodge-gatekeeper, since you mentioned you were impressed with this, and since I'm going through all my folders and things right now as I transfer to a new laptop, here are some facts that I've just checked. My comedy folder, which lives on a stupidly large external hard drive that lives on some Velcro that keeps it next to my laptop, is: 3.9 TB, with 15,160 files and 1,544 folders. Though some of those files are repeats of each other, ie. there are lots of mixed bill gigs copied into the folders of everyone who appears in them. And some other things are either copied or shortcutted in multiple places; like all the No More Jockeys videos are in Mark Watson's folder and shortcutted to Tim Key.
The general rule is that if I have more than one recording that prominently features a particular comedian, they get their own folder; if there's only one, they go in the appropriate Misc. folder. Though there are exceptions, for comedians who appear in multiple mixed bills but I don't like them enough to ever seek out their other stuff so there's no point in dedicating a folder to them.
Every file in there is logged in one of three spreadsheets. One spreadsheet for every single Kitson thing, because that one is so completist and extensive that it was best to keep it all in one place. One spreadsheet for all the non-Kitson mixed bills, as they needed their own sheet to record their specific sets of meta-data, with columns for date and venue and MC and acts. And one spreadsheet with a tab for all other stand-up hours and a tab for everything else - audiobooks, ebooks, movies, radio shows, TV shows, podcasts, random audio things, etc.
I've heard/read/seen very nearly everything in there. Late last year I did a sweep through the folder to find everything that I had downloaded but never heard/read/seen, and I made copies of all those things and put them all in a separate folder that's stored on my internal hard drive, and I've been going through them and deleting them as I go. That folder's currently about 100 GB.
I'm unnecessarily meticulous about keeping it organized, naming every file with its date first, written as year/month/day, so that they'll automatically organize themselves chronologically. For a stand-up special that was first performed, recorded, and released all in different years, I log it according in the spreadsheet and file name according to its original Edinburgh year, except in certain exceptional circumstances (where the year of filming is relevant). The file name then has a hyphen before listing the performer, then another before the show name, then the venue in brackets. Why do I do it this way? Because that's how I saved the first few stand-up shows when I started this folder years ago, and now I have to keep doing it so everything's consistent.
It's all backed up on IDrive because if anything ever happens to it I will feel like I've lost my life's work. I feel like it should be donated to a library to preserve my archiving work for eternal historical posterity, but I can't because there are a hell of a lot of illicit bootlegs in there that are never allowed to leave my computer. But I do feel like I can go about my life more easily when I know it's up to date.
I've bought a new laptop, and I'm transferring all my files over to it, and my comedy folder still lives on the same external hard drive, but this process has caused me to look at my whole comedy folder and make sure everything is where it should be, which I think it is. But that process has caused me to decide to ask, again, now that it's grown since the last time I've asked and there are several more sub-folders - my comedy hard drive folder, fuck/marry/kill?

I'm fully aware that this won't help now, but: I would highly recommend EVERYONE keep a full backup of your computer. If you do any kind of content creation, it will save you many headaches, and can be done for a fairly small one-time cost.
Get a portable hard drive. It doesn't have to be fast, but it does need to be at least as big as your main drive, and ideally somewhat reliable. There are plenty of 2TB drives on amazon for around $80-$140.
Find some software. Most computers should have a built in way to do this (mac has time machine, windows has a backup menu hidden in settings somewhere (Linux I think you just copy and paste the files, but anyone using Linux probably doesn't need this)).
There's also free and paid 3rd party options (my dad (who does pro audio editing) uses Carbon Copy Cloner, I use Veeam Agent, Paragon B&R CE is a bit easier to set up. )
Set it to backup everything that's reasonable. Don't do your video games, you can always re-download them and they usually have cloud saves if you have a launcher. You can also skip some of your other apps if you're low on space.
You'll want it to backup as soon as the drive connects. You can even continue working during backups (don't do anything crazy, but just a word doc or drawing won't cause any problems). When it's done, store in a safe place.
If you want to make it a bootable backup, that will let you get back to work faster, though not all software supports that.
Other options:
iPad users: if you have a computer, you can store a complete backup on there (unfortunately proprietary Apple software only, but it works).
If you have a desktop and want to use an internal drive, you can do that too. In that case, set it on a schedule (every day is totally fine, though you can do less if you choose) (also this goes for any drive that stays attached). You can set it to wake your computer and put it back to sleep after, if you want.
If you can't do any of this:
Please at least store anything important to you in a cloud service. Google drive gives you 15GB, there's plenty of others that give varying amounts.
Thank you anyone who read this. The one time I lost all my data I felt horrible (it was entirely my fault because I didn't feel like plugging in my drive), but it's a good thing most of my stuff was in the cloud at that point. If your a professional, you've probably already got a backup method worked out, but this sort of thing really isn't mentioned much to everyone else. Please please remind your friends to save their important stuff in multiple spots.
my folder of comm wips has straight up vanished from my drive im about to freak out. i lost a bunch of brushes too what has happened

The Dumb One
By PlanceGardener21 on AO3
Lance allowed Red to fly on autopilot as the Paladins soared through the void on their long journey home. He leaned back in his pilot’s chair, listening to his teammates’ comm chatter, but saying nothing. Allura was having a discussion with Pidge and Hunk about quintessence conversion efficiency and the necessity of allowing the lions to recharge. They would have to find a habitable planet to land on soon. Keith and Allura had some ideas about which one would be suitable for their needs. Pidge made some quick calculations which she sent to Black Lion, and Keith adjusted their route towards Earth, which they apparently weren’t going to reach anytime in the near future.
Lance sighed. What could he contribute to this conversation anyway? It was like they had forgotten he was even there. He thought about their recent encounter with the mysterious alien entity known to them only as Bob. The dumb one, Lance thought. That’s what he called me, and that’s who I am. Everyone seems to agree on that. He closed his eyes. He just wanted this war to be over. He missed Earth. He missed his family. He could feel the moisture welling up beneath his eyelids. He just wanted to go home.
“Lance!” Hunk practically shouted over his comm. “Are you with us, buddy? You’ve been really quiet lately.”
“Sorry. I must have been napping for awhile.”
“Are you sure you’re awake back there?” Keith asked. Red, the normally the fastest of the lions, had drifted to the rear of their formation.
“Keep up, Lonce,” Allura chided. “You don’t want to get left behind.” After all this time she still pronounced his name incorrectly. At first he thought it was cute, but now it was beginning to get on his nerves every time she said it. Lance pulled a face that he was glad the princess could not see.
That’s just great, he thought. Now, I’m the slow one, too.
“Lance?” Pidge’s voice was more gentle than usual for some reason. “Would you like to play Killbot in tandem with me? It would be a great way to pass the time.”
“How can I play when I’m over here? The game console is with you, Pidge.”
“I’ve downloaded the game’s code into one of Green’s auxiliary computers. I can send a copy of the program to one of Red’s auxiliaries and broadcast a signal link that will allow us to play together in real time. It’ll be fun.”
Lance was impressed. “That must have been a lot of work for you. Why did you go to so much trouble?”
Pidge hesitated. “Well...you did go through a lot to help me get the game in the first place. And even though it’s fun to play alone, I’ve always thought that it’s even more fun to play Killbot with you.”
Lance smiled crookedly in spite of the gloomy mood he had been in a few moments before. “Well, what are you waiting for? Send me the program!” He then grinned broadly in anticipation of another gaming session with Pidge. Somehow, She managed to bring him out of his foul mood with just a few words. He noticed that she did that a lot lately.
“Ugh, can you two put all of your gaming talk on a private channel.” Allura sounded annoyed.
“Will do!” Pidge replied cheerfully. There was a brief burst of static, and then he heard Pidge’s voice on a different channel. “Lance, you there?” He activated his viewscreen.
“Your favorite Paladin’s right here, Pidgey,” he said with a smirk while pointing finger guns at her. “I’m cuter than a yelmor, and I smell better than one too!” He really didn’t know what made him say that, but it made her giggle, so it must have been the right thing to say. It may have been his imagination, but he could have sworn that Pidge blushed a little as she smiled at him.
She typed quickly, then pressed a button. “Sending now. Let me know when it’s finished downloading to your auxiliary terminal. It will take several minutes.”
“Thanks for doing all this for me, Pidge. I really missed gaming with you.”
“l missed you too,” Pidge declared absentmindedly as she studied one of her data screens. “And it was the least I could do for you after what happened on board the pirate ship.”
“What do you mean?”
“Zethrid and Ezor were gleeful about the idea of torturing me, but you wouldn’t let them take me. Even though you were restrained, you fought to defend me, to keep me safe. What you did was selfless, reckless, and very brave. For the longest time I just wanted to say...” Pidge’s voice cracked. Her eyes were shining. “Thank you for that.”
Lance’s mouth fell open in stunned silence. After a long pause, he softly murmured, “No problem.” He watched as she wiped her eyes quickly and swallowed. Lance stammered, “I...uh...I really didn’t have time to think. I just reacted. Someone I care about was in danger, and something inside of me just...snapped. I had to protect you. I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I hadn’t done something. Pidge, if they had taken you, if they had hurt you, I—“
She gave him a watery smile. “But they didn’t hurt me. Ezor beat you up instead.” Tears streamed down Pidge’s cheeks, and she wiped them away with the heel of one hand. “If Coran, Acxa, and the mice hadn’t arrived to rescue us, no telling what they might have done to you.”
“It’s all right. I only had a few bruises. I’m fine, really. And if I had to do it all over again, I would.” His face suddenly felt very warm.
She looked at him in astonishment, and then smiled shyly. She was definitely blushing this time, and looking at him with what could only be described as admiration. Selfless, she had called him. Brave.
“I guess you’re my hero, then.” The look she gave him was the softest he had ever seen from her. He was speechless.
It had occurred to him, and not for the first time either, that Pidge was growing up. She was taller now, her hair was longer, the subtle curves of her slight figure had become more obvious recently. There was no way she could pass for a young boy anymore. She’s too pretty to be a boy, he thought, and then suddenly felt warm all over. Where had that thought come from? Pretty. Delicate. Graceful. Brilliant. Sweet. Courageous. Determined. She was all of those things and so much more. And she saw him as a hero. He was her hero.
Hero...How many times had he hoped that he might be regarded as a hero by some attractive young woman? How much time had he spent in idle daydreaming about rescuing a fair damsel in distress who would fall in love with him? How long had he fantasized that one day a girl would look at him the way Katie Holt was looking at him at this very moment? Well, it was time to be really brave then. He looked back at her and said aloud what he had been meaning to tell her for the longest time.
“You—you’re my hero too, you know. You saved me. Remember when Bob put me in that vat of acid?”
“Don’t remind me. That arrogant little creep could have killed you, Lance. I was furious!”
“Yeah, I am not a fan of that guy either. I was so nervous that I couldn’t think straight. Every time I got an answer wrong I felt like I was letting the team down, and I could never forgive myself if we lost because of my stupidity.”
“You’re not stupid, Lance. Don’t ever call yourself that.”
“Why not? Everyone knows that I’m the dumb one. Bob kept saying it over and over, and he’s some kind of ancient being with godlike knowledge and power, so it must be true.”
“That is absolute nonsense. Bob doesn’t know what he’s talking about. And you’re not dumb! I can prove it to you.”
“Good luck with that,” he said skeptically.
“Are you familiar with Howard Gardener’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences?”
“No. Wait, multiple? Are you saying that there is more than one way to be smart?”
“That’s exactly what I am saying. Even before we became Paladins, I hacked the Garrison’s computers several times when I was searching for Matt and Dad. I saved nearly everything I could find that was classified, including data about Shiro, who was missing too, and Keith because of his connection to Shiro. I researched you and Hunk also, since the three of us were training together as a flight crew. I wanted to know everything there is to know about you two. I made a dossier on each member of our team.”
“Yeah, you told us. I mean, normal people do scary stuff like that all the time.” He rolled his eyes.
She glared at him. “Lance...”
“I’m just saying! Look, you got angry at Hunk for being nosy when he tried to get a peek at your diary. In a way, this is even worse!”
“I’m sorry! I was desperate to find my family, okay? And I wanted to know more about you and Hunk. I wanted to know if I could trust you. I entered the Garrison illegally, under a false identity, and sooner or later one of you would figure out that Pidge Gunderson was an alias. If Iverson found out that I was really Sam Holt’s daughter...”
“Okay, okay. I’m sorry too. I know you were probably in a constant state of anxiety back then. I honestly thought there was something very weird going on with you all the time, even though I was too dense to figure out that you weren’t really a boy.”
She paused, looking thoughtful for a moment, remembering their time together as cadets. “You kept trying to be friends with me, and I kept pushing you away. I felt terrible about that, you know. I really wanted to be friends, but I was afraid you and Hunk would figure out who I really was.”
“It’s alright, Pidge. I understand why you did it. And I hope you noticed that we didn’t give up on you.”
“I know. You and Hunk were the first real friends I’ve ever had.” She smiled again, her eyes shining.
He smiled back at her. “You and Hunk are like, my favorite people in the entire universe, okay? You’re both so brilliant I often wonder why either of you would want an idiot like me around, unless it’s for comic relief.”
“Lance! Stop that! I already told you, you are not dumb, so stop saying it.”
“Okay, okay. I’ll stop. What was it that you were saying about multiple intelligences?”
“I have all of your files from our days at the Garrison: standardized test scores, pilot trainee stats, physical fitness data, psych profile, and MI survey results, as well as everyone else’s. We both scored pretty high in Visual/Spatial Intelligence.”
“You have to in order to be a pilot trainee.”
“And to be so great at video games. It’s also necessary to be a skilled sharpshooter,” she grinned at him. “I may be a genius in Logical/Mathematical, but your score in Bodily/Kinesthetic Intelligence is much higher than mine. You also scored really high in Linguistic, Musical, and especially Interpersonal Intellligences. That last one is my weakest area.”
“Wait a tic, are you saying that I’m smarter than you in some areas?!”
“Yes, without a doubt. The data is right here. I can send it to you...”
“No, I...” Lance looked shy all of a sudden. “It’s enough just to know that you think I’m not dumb. I mean, you’re one of the most intelligent people I have ever met, not to mention that you’re one of the people I love most in the entire universe, so your opinion means everything to me. I guess what I am trying to say is...thank you.”
Wait, did he just say love? Out loud?! Oh no, she heard that. That’s why she isn’t saying anything. Idiot. There was an awkward silence between them.
The computer console chimed softly, signaling the download was finished.
“You’re welcome, Lance,” she said carefully. “And I think you should know that even though you are dense as a neutron star about some things, you are brilliant as a supernova in many other ways.” She paused again. “I guess that’s why I love you so much, you Goofball.” She said all of this with a dazzling smile that made his heart beat faster.
Lance’s heart was racing for quite some time, and he could not stop smiling for the next varga or so. He and Pidge became absorbed in excitement of the video game, but in the back of his mind Pidge’s words reverberated through the cavern of his memory, echoing again and again without diminishing in intensity: Selfless. Brave. Hero. You’re not dumb. I love you.
I love you...I love you...I love you. His mind replayed those words over and over as they battled digital monsters. With each victory he felt more confident, more sure of himself. He whooped with unbridled joy when their teamwork took down one foe after another.
He loved her. He knew that now, and he had already wasted so much precious time flirting with girls who really didn’t matter to him. He vowed he wouldn’t do that anymore. They were fighting in an interstellar war that had been going on for thousands of years before they were even born. Who knew how much time they had left? Days, months, years, a lifetime?
A lifetime. He realized at that moment that he could spend a lifetime talking or gaming or just growing old with Pidge. He wanted that, if they survived this endless war. He wanted her.
When they finally landed on the planet that Keith and Allura were talking about earlier, he might be able to walk around with Pidge for a bit and enjoy the fresh air of a planet with a breathable atmosphere. He would try to hold her hand, of course. And, maybe, if he could find a place to be alone with her, he could tell her face to face how he really felt about her. He wondered if she would let him steal a kiss...
“Team, look alive!” Keith’s voice over the main comm channel broke Lance’s concentration. Pidge paused their game. “There’s a renegade Galra battlegroup straight ahead. Incoming!” Galra fighters swarmed around Keith, Allura, and Hunk like a hive of angry hornets.
Quiznak! Well, it was time to put that Visual/Spatial Bodily/Kinesthetic Intelligence to use. Red soared ahead with Green right behind him and Lance opened fire on the fighter drone who was tailing Black Lion. It burst in an explosion of color and light in front of him.
“Nice shooting!” Hunk exclaimed.
“Way to go, Sharpshooter!” Pidge cheered. “That was a genius move.” Was she teasing him?
Lance grinned as he bullseyed another fighter.

Printing your comic, Part II: The printing process
Hello there, and welcome guys to part II of this article. On last week’s post we’ve talked about some printing vocabulary and some basic terms, and now we’re going to discuss some settings and common problems you want to check before you send your comic to the printing shop!
Page count:
Most comic creators plan for some time on their pages, set specific compositions to be shown in spread pages and even take the extra step of leaving a shocking plot twist to be revealed right after the flipping of a page. And because of that, here’s another relevant thing to consider if you plan on printing: page count. Take a look at a comic book close to you, and changes are it is a saddle stitch, as we’ve previously discussed. Because of that, each page actually corresponds to half the paper sheet in which it was printed, and the paper sheet is folded in the middle and attached to the spine by the staples. Considerer also that there’s a front and a back side of this sheet, which means each one sheet corresponds to four pages. Because of that, you want to make sure your final page count inside your book is a multiple of four. For example, if your comic has 35 pages, you’ll just need to add an empty (or not) page at the end of it and make it 36 pages long. If your comic is 37 pages, you’ll have to stretch it to 40, so might as well use those compulsory extra pages for some extra material, sketches and character bios!
Resolution settings:
Another very relevant thing to keep in mind is image resolution. Many artists create comic strips for the internet, both desktop and mobile, and sometimes the resolution for tis medias is lower than what you need for printing. Remember that the standard US comic size is way bigger than your cell phone screen, and this final file format should be measured in inches or centimeters, not in pixels. I’d in fact recommend creating pages with about 150% of the final format size just to be sure. Another important measurement of image quality is the DPI rage, which stands for “dots per inch”. This is the amount of dots that will be effectively printed per inch of paper in your final comic. You’ll need at least 300 DPI to ensure a good printing quality, though some print shops will recommend 450 DPI.
File format:
Now that you know your digital file size and proper resolution, let’s see what kind of digital format you should send to your printer. Remember we’ve talked about how any sort of printing process is actually a translation from light color to pigment color, so there will be a change in what you see on your screen to what you get on your printed comic, but we want to make the best of both. So here are some of the ost commonly known output format for images:
JPEG (or JPG): saving your files in this format keeps the file size quite small due to its efficient compression, but also because of that, you lose image quality. What this format does is it groups similar pixels together to save space, which may generate color bands in areas of your paintings. This conversion is also permanent, so the previous data from these compressed area is lost once you save the file.
PNG: The most commonly known advantage is the possibility of saving transparent backgrounds, which can be very handy. PNG files also go through compression, but without any quality loss, which means you can open and edit it as many times as you want without effectively losing data.
PDF: Most printers will suggest you to send your files in this format, and for a good reason. A PDF image is identical to its source in any way, and it’s the ideal file format for printing graphic design material, photographs and also your comic. Also, PDF allows you to save your entire comic within one single file, with all of the pages already in their proper place, and you can even add the printing marks we’ve previously talked about if necessary. Most painting and art softwares can export files in this format, but you can even use online conversion tools for this.
It’s also a good idea to add a note about vector images. Unlike the file formats above, which are all what we call raster graphics, a vector graphic image can have different file formats - and very different properties. To put it simply, a vector image is composed by a series of mathematical equations, it is a collection of points, lines and curves that can be put into numbers like geographical coordinates. But don’t worry: you don’t have to deal with any of the math to get acquainted with vector images!
Through the use of graphic tools, producing vector images can feel very familiar and intuitive. The most notorious quality of vectorized images is that they’re very reliable and can be expanded (or reduced) without any data loss. That’s a great solution for logos, so if you can get your own comic brand in vector image, this can come in hand when producing banners and other bigger products. Also, many people will use vector softwares and tools to create speech bubbles and lettering for their comics. That can make it easier to edit those elements later on, and it also makes it easier to control and create a standard visual identity for your comic. Since most of us will not effectively draw our comics in vector based software, this means speech bubbles and lettering will come as a later stage of the comic production.
So let’s just take a final look at these formats: JPEG, PNG the native PSD (Adobe) are raster graphic images. They are composed of pixels and cannot be enlarged beyond their original format without losing data. These are probably the output format of most of you artwork, so be sure to always produce your comic pages at large sizes and 300 DPI. Vector graphic images include the formats: SGV and EPS, along with the native AI (Adobe). Vector images are composed by curves and occupy less space. PDF is a bit of a wild card here: it can be both raster and vector, and it’s your exporting setup that will define this. PDF is great to maintain all of the data and image quality, and in my opinion is your best friend for printing purposes.
Printing process:
Now we know the proper terms and how to communicate with the print shop staff, and we also know what kind of file we need to export and send in order to get things properly printed. But what kind of printing process are we going to use? Let’s talk about the differences, advantages and disadvantages of the two main printing methods offered by print shops: offset and digital printing.
First of all, those two types of printing process are created in different machines, which different technologies, and as a consequence the color representation that comes out of them differs. Remember, any printing process is already a translation from the data on your computer screen, the language of light, to the language of pigment, so you’ll have to deal with slight changes during this transformation process.
The offset machine is generally a bigger, bulky engine with typically four sections, one for each printing color: cyan, magent, yellow and black. In order to print something, there’s a metal plate to apply each corresponding ink color to its place in the paper sheet, counting four metal plates per image. That means your image will be split into four colors and them those four images will be applied one on top of the other until the final figure is built. It’s a pretty fascinating process, and if your print shop allows you to take a look at the machines, it will be easier for you to understand what’s going on there.
Digital printing will also use four colors, but they’ll be applied using electrostatic rollers, which is another very fascinating thing to watch. This printing process uses toner instead of ink, and the peculiar thing about it that it’s not a liquid, but a very thin powder, which will adhere to the paper sheet according to the data on the programming of those electrostatic rollers. In this process, each color will take its turn as it is laid on paper, but there’s no need for creating the metal plates previously.
So now that you understand how both those machines work, there are some considerations regarding what process to use to print your comic. The most relevant for us comic creators one is the cost and benefit concerning the total amount of copies. As you can see, setting up an offset machine takes way more time, and it also consumes more time and needs more manutention. However, once the setup is made and the process starts, it’s way more efficient, and therefore the unit is cheaper in the long run. Digital printing takes way less time of preparation, and it is cheaper because of that at a smaller number of units. Digital printers will also have a faster turnaround time.
So, in a nutshell:
Offset printing: Good for 2.000+ units, takes more time to produce. The total investment will be big, but the unit cost will be lower, so it’s good for big press. (Tip: some printing shops will actually keep or allow you to keep the metal plates from your current run, so that if you choose to print again in the future, this stage is already executed. Ask your print shop about that!)
Digital printing: Good for anything from 1 to 2.000 copies, a short run print. As you get closer to the 2.000 copies mark, be sure to check out that limbo and see which process is better suited for your specific needs. Digital printing offers fast turnaround time and the initial cost is cheaper, though the unit will be more expensive.
That’s it for today’s article, guys! This time we’ve covered everything process-related that I saw as convenient to comic makers. If you still have any questions about the printing process itself, please let me know!
Next week, we’ll talk about the most common problems along the way, how to avoid some of them, and how to fix others after they've been identified!

All2MP3 For Mac
Now that you understand how to export your GarageBand songs to iTunes and the best way to use your customized music with the opposite iLife functions, let's look at the way to convert your AIFF information to MP3 in iTunes. Resolve whether you wish to preserve your information in a lossless format, or to degrade the standard ever so slightly and save tons of space by converting to MP3. Most individuals can't hear the difference, however in the event you downloaded FLAC information, perhaps you are an audiophile. Should you aren't certain, I might recommend going with MP3 to avoid filling up your onerous drive. MP3 is a digital music format which permits CD tracks to be lowered to around a tenth of their regular measurement with out a significant loss of quality. MP3 removes quite a lot of the data recorded in a track that our ears usually are not able to hear and then uses advanced algorithms to cut back the file measurement. This then allows you to get lots of of songs on to a CD and it additionally has opened up a new market over the web - the obtain market as download times have been significantly lowered. We counted how many steps each program took to complete a variety of duties and found that Xilisoft makes converting audio recordsdata simple and simple. It extracts audio from a wide range of video files, together with MPEG WMV and MP4. The conversion and extraction process take a bit longer than the perfect applications we tested, which isn't nice for changing multiple large information. This program has a batch processing function that allows you to convert multiple recordsdata with one click of the mouse. You'll be able to add results like echo and chorus and normalize volume, which is helpful for coverting information taken from vinyl recordings or cassette. DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS UPDATE. THAT IS NOW MALWARE!!!. DO NOT OBTAIN. Just like the earlier reviewer, I was tricked into an update by software program I had beforehand trusted. It seemed immediately sketchy, trying to vary my browser to Yahoo! and all that b, however I continued. After I put in the software program, it quit out Chrome, and once I rebooted, there was a brand new Extension put in WITH OUT MY PERMISSION - some b called PremierOpinion. Additional, All2Mp3 had buried PremierOpinion as password-protected software in my Applications folder, and had set it up to run in the background on a regular basis. Zamzar is one other online file format converting device that helps conversion for over one hundred fifty file formats including aiff to mp3 конвертер скачать to MP3. You can even type URL of the file to instantly convert it or add the information and enter your electronic mail. Zamzar will ship you a mail on your e mail tackle from the place you can obtain your transformed recordsdata.
But image formats such asAI andEPS, or sound codecs such asMID andMUS, don't include actual image or sound information, but rather the commands needed to generate them. AnEPS of a sketch of the Mona Lisa would have the actual curves of the sketch in a format that the pc understands and might show to the consumer. The computer can manipulate each curve independently, even the place it overlaps different curves, without disturbing them. Likewise, a MIDI file of the Fifth Symphony has tracks or channels for every of the devices, and the notes and velocities and different commands for every of these in a method the computer understands and might manipulate. You might change the person notes of a person instrument with out affecting the opposite sounds that happen throughout the same time. You possibly can't try this with aWAV orMP3. Asking for this would be like asking for a line-art kind graphics program (Illustrator, FreeHand, CorelDRAW!, aiff to mp3 конвертер скачать Canvas's draw options solely, Xara X, and so on.) so as to add a feature to take a scanned photograph and convert all of the objects in it to line artwork objects, complete with Bezier curves and handles, automatically grouping associated things collectively (the wheels of a car could be grouped with its body, leaves with a tree, facial options of a person with the remainder of the individual, and many others.). While autotrace features and programs do exist (Adobe Streamline, for example), none of them could be capable of dealing with photographs and recognizing the relationships of objects inside them. Most just handle scanned monochrome or, in uncommon circumstances, colored line artwork, changing the scanned bitmap into actual line art inEPS or some similar decision-impartial line-art format.By default iTunes is a "virtual" Library containing no actual files but solely hyperlinks to them. To keep away from shedding your information, don't delete the exported recordsdata from the placement you exported them to, until you might have already gone to Edit > Preferences > Superior in iTunes and enabled the "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when including to library" option. You possibly can change encoding parameters of goal recordsdata similar to pattern frequency, bit charge, channels, and high quality. So it is possible to convert a big-measurement file to a smaller one. And, the software provides or retains ID3 tag when changing. The software program helps to increase and reduce volume as nicely. You may also be part of a number of AIFF information to one large AIFF with the converter. If you happen to're not utilizing a minimum of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion or newer, you may have just a few options. First is to use iTunes, which additionally has some encoding and converting tools constructed into it at all versions, as we covered before The filetypes in iTunes are pickier and it is not as flexible though. Another option is to use All2MP3, a free app that handles a variety of audio conversion with. From wma to flac to mp3 and more, All2MP3 will get it accomplished, although you won't get the elegance of audio conversion instantly from the Finder or the convenience of not having to obtain one other app.

Etiquette for calling a customer service line
Let’s face it, there are a lot of products out there that don’t always work the way they’re supposed to. So what do you do when this happens? If you have two neurons to rub together to form a synapse, you read the labels and/or the use and care manual until you find a customer service number. Now, it has become increasingly clear to me that many, many, MANY people out there don’t understand that there are rules and protocols that customer service reps are required to follow, so here’s a few handy tips to keep in mind:
1. Make sure you are actually standing beside the product that you need help with when you call. We only know what you tell us, so we need you to be our eyes, ears, and most importantly, our hands when addressing the issue with the product in question. If you’re running an errand and think for one second that we can do anything at all to help you when the product is at home, you’re going to have a really unpleasant time. Don’t call us while you’re driving, unless it’s to ask how late we’re open, and please for the love of all that is decent, DON’T TRY TO RETURN THE PRODUCT WITHOUT CALLING US FIRST OR YOU WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY. Also, make sure you actually have time to stay on the phone and address the issue.
2. Do not just start rambling at the person you are speaking to. There is always an order of operations that must be followed if they are to help you and more often than not, the person who picks up the phone is either not trained or not authorized to directly address the problem that you’re having, unless they tell you otherwise. In most cases, the first person you speak to is only supposed to do two things: register a file in their computer system for the product in question (or otherwise access an existing file) and then transfer you to someone who can actually help you with the problem that you are having. In addition, extraneous information can slow down the process, waste time for both parties, and cause additional problems, so listen carefully to the person that you speak to and they will tell you what information they need. Once the unit is registered, the agent may then place you on hold and transfer you to the department that is trained to address the specific product you have and the specific problem that you are having with said product. This is why you need to make sure you have time to actually stay on the phone, because they can only help you if you’re going to be available long enough for them to get the information they need. If you require a representative who speaks a language other than English (usually Spanish, but the center where I work does also employ at least one French-speaking agent), please request to speak with a representative who speaks that language, as the agent may be able to immediately transfer you to someone who can communicate with you more easily.
3. Answer all of the questions that you are asked, and only those that you are asked, in the order that you are asked them. yes, I briefly addressed this above, but it still bears repeating. The data entry systems have variations from one company to the next, but more often than not, when the agent answers the phone, the only thing they have on the screen before them is a single textbox that will only accept one specific piece of information. In addition, the systems are usually designed to access data from the top down, meaning that you MUST provide the information specifically requested before it will allow the agent to access anything else. If they don’t ask you for a piece of information (such as the date of manufacture or who installed the unit), it’s more likely that the information is unnecessary than it is that they forgot to ask for it. And if they ask you what room an appliance is installed in, it’s usually because certain models are only designed to be installed in certain locations, so please be specific. And for pete’s sake, A HALLWAY IS NOT A ROOM; IF YOU MEAN CLOSET, JUST SAY CLOSET.
4. Read all information directly from the label on the product itself. In many cases, the only place you will be able to find the information is on the product itself, and the agent with whom you are speaking will be able to direct you to its location. This is why you must remain near the product for the duration of the call. DO NOT WRITE IT DOWN OR READ FROM THE COPY THAT YOU HAVE WRITTEN. 100% of the time, one or more digits are omitted or miswritten and you will be asked to go back and check again, and the system will not accept the information unless every single digit is entered correctly. This is not something that you can ballpark. Every single specific individual digit of each number requested must be included, correct, and presented in full and in the right order. This isn’t just limited to Serial and Model numbers. Learn to distinguish between Q, O, 0, 8, B, U, 4, and A, the difference between G, 6, and 9, the difference between 5 and S, the difference between 1, 7, T, 2, and Z, and the difference between a dash/hyphen (-), an underscore (_), and a space ( ). Yes, I have seen every single one of these digits mistaken for every single one of the others and getting even one digit wrong can mean the difference between getting the help that you need and wasting time. And when providing these numbers PLEASE ONLY SAY ONE DIGIT AT A TIME. You may see it as 217, but when we hear it, it comes across as 2 7 teen, and then we have to go back and correct it, which gets especially annoying when the text box that we’re entering it into has a character limit and has to be manually highlighted in order to correct the error, which causes us to fall further behind. And don’t say “oh” when you mean “zero”, it doesn’t save any time. Also bear in mind, if you have more than one unit, each unit must be registered under its own file so that they may be addressed individually; remember that the information for the product is saved under the serial number, NOT the owner’s name. Also, if you need glasses to read small print, WEAR THEM. I cannot begin to describe how many times I’ve asked a customer for their serial number and then had to wait several minutes for them to put their glasses on so that they can read it. And when we ask you for your serial number, please don’t ask “are you ready?” We were ready the moment we asked for it.
5. Yes, you do need to provide your personal information. but usually only the first time you call. It’s the only way they can link the product in question to the customer that owns it, and in most cases, the warranty will only pertain to the original registered owner of the unit. In some instances, the database will be designed to allow for multiple contacts to be attached to the same file, but there will always be one primary homeowner that takes priority over the others, and so all information must be correct, especially with regards to sending parts or repair personnel under the warranty coverage. In addition, when accessing an existing file, asking what name the file is registered under is the easiest way for the agent in question to determine that they have entered the serial number correctly, which means that telling them to write “john doe” will just make it impossible for them to find your information should you need to call back. In addition, you must also provide the information requested of you in full. This means that when you are asked for the owner’s name, you must provide both the FIRST AND LAST name. When you are asked for a preferred phone number, YOU MUST PROVIDE THE AREA CODE FIRST, and when you are asked for the address, YOU MUST INCLUDE THE HOUSE NUMBER, STREET NAME, APARTMENT/TRAILER/LOT/SUITE NUMBER (if applicable), CITY, STATE, AND ZIP CODE (or province and postal code if you are calling from Canada), as the system will usually have a feature that it uses to validate the address for the purpose of sending parts or technicians to the correct location under the warranty, and if it does not recognize the address or the address is incomplete, it will not accept it. In addition, for larger appliances, the warranty will only apply if they remain installed in their original installation location, so we need to know where that location is in order to cover the appliance. And if they ask if your phone number is a home, work, or mobile, it’s usually because they’re selecting from a drop-down menu and can only select one option, so if you say “all of the above,” they will want to reach through the phone and swat you, and just because they ask this question doesn’t mean they are looking for a specific number (hence the use of the term “preferred phone number”). “But I don’t want my information where some stranger can access it!” I hear you cry. Tell me, How are you calling us right now? and how did you obtain the means to do so in the first place? How did you pay for it? Chances are, the answers to all of these questions required you to offer your personal information to some party or other in the past, so I’m sorry to break it to you, but if you’ve ever used a cell phone, or the internet, or a credit card, or have a driver’s license, or any form of legal ID whatsoever, your information is already irretrievably out there and you have nothing to lose by providing it to the people who actually need it in order to help you. You’ll be happy to know that in most cases where appliances are concerned, providing your email is optional, but if you don’t wish to provide your email or otherwise don’t have one, don’t be an ass about it, just say “no email”. And if you do provide your email, here’s a couple of pet peeves I would like to address. I have been on this earth for about as long as email has existed, and never in my entire life have I encountered an email program where the email address was case sensitive, nor have I encountered an email address that has spaces. YOU DO NOT NEED TO TELL ME THAT IT IS ALL LOWER CASE AND YOU CERTAINLY DO NOT NEED TO TELL ME THAT THERE ARE NO SPACES OR THAT IT IS ALL ONE WORD, because it is my job to copy every single digit that you provide exactly as you provide it and I will read it back to you digit by digit to make sure I have it written correctly.
6. You must stay on the phone until we have finished all of our procedures. Once the first agent has registered your unit, or confirmed that they’ve opened the correct file, they will likely transfer you to another department that has the training and authorization to directly address the problem that you are having. DO NOT GET UPSET THAT YOU ARE BEING PUT ON HOLD. This is a necessary evil, as the agent is required to wrap up the conversation in a hurry and move onto the next customer, and you need to speak to someone who can actually use the information that has been gathered to help you. once put on hold, they will tell the system to transfer you to a particular line within the call center, at which point you will be added to the end of a queue. If the agent says something to the degree of “Please stand by”, that is an indication that they need a minute or so to finish entering the information that you have provided, that they are waiting for the next page to load on their screen, or that they are about to send you to someone who can help, and are requesting that you patiently wait for them to request the next piece of information. NOT AN INVITATION TO START TALKING OR YELLING AT THEM. There will be times when the automated hold system will tell you that there are a number of callers ahead of you, or that you will have to wait a certain amount of time before an agent will be available to answer. Whatever you do, DO NOT HANG UP THE PHONE AND CALL BACK HOPING TO SPEAK TO SOMEONE SOONER. All that will accomplish is getting ahold of another registration agent, who will ask you for your serial number again, and will then transfer you back to the same queue, where you will now have to wait even longer because you gave up your place in line.
7. When providing information, SPEAK SLOWLY AND ENUNCIATE YOUR WORDS. This is a huge pet peeve of mine. If English is not your first language, then it’s understandable (also you speak my language MUCH better than I speak yours), but if you’re a native English speaker, you have no excuse. Half the mistakes that are made are due to poor or miscommunication. When I ask you a question, I expect to hear words, NOT A STRING OF GROANING NOISES. If I can’t understand what you’re saying, I’m going to write the information wrong and then we’re going to have to waste even more time correcting the errors. In addition, make sure you speak at an audible volume. You don’t have to shout, but if you’re mumbling or speaking in a low tone, we will not be able to hear what you are saying. And PLEASE keep your fingers away from the buttons and/or screen while you are on the phone; it’s going to make it that much more difficult if I keep hearing buttons being pressed every two seconds. And for Pete’s sake, CHANGE THE BATTERIES IN YOUR SMOKE DETECTOR. I swear, every third call I hear that infernal beeping in the background.
8. Yes, you must troubleshoot the product. Regardless of your preconceived notions of how a particular product works, or what the problem is, or what you want done to resolve the issue, we still need to know the exact nature of the situation before we can take any actions to resolve it; the most fundamental of which is to walk the customer through a step-by-step diagnostic and troubleshooting procedure over the phone. The purpose of troubleshooting the unit is to determine the nature, source, and severity of the problem through process of elimination by observing the symptoms that it exhibits under different circumstances. You may think you know what’s wrong and what needs to be done, but there will ALWAYS be something that you missed or otherwise didn’t think to look for. Plus, as mentioned above, we cannot see what is happening on the other side of the phone, so we need you to be our eyes, ears, and hands and follow our instructions, many of which are time sensitive once we begin. Always listen to the precise wording of each instruction you are given and each question that we ask, as if a step is performed incorrectly, it can give inaccurate information or force us to start over. It may seem intimidating if you’ve never done it yourself before, but it’s necessary for you to help us help you resolve your problem. And no, we will not ask you to do anything that will endanger your health or safety; for any problem where that would be an issue, you will likely be instructed to hire a professional to do the work for you (assuming that one isn’t already being requested under your labor coverage, if applicable). In most cases, the steps are simple enough, and the agent’s instructions easy enough to follow, that even a child could accomplish them. “But I just have a simple question!” I hear you cry. No, no you don’t. It’s never simple and it’s never just one question.
9. Sometimes you just have to wait. It is inevitable that a problem will sometimes require that a part be replaced or that a licensed professional be sent to diagnose, repair, or replace the appliance in question. But understand that we will never be able to get them to you the same day that you call. In the case of the parts, the reason for this should be obvious, but in the case of the technicians, there is some explanation required. You see, while there may be some companies out there that have their own field technicians on their payroll that can be sent out at a moments notice, said companies are increasingly few and far between, and most of the time they prefer to cut corners in the interest of spending less money, and the easiest way to do that is to outsource to independent businesses. Typically the situation is as follows: The parent company manufactures the product, which is then sold to an independent vendor, who then sells the product to the customer at locations of the vendor’s choosing, with little to no input from the manufacturer. The manufacturer themselves will then sign on various independent contractors and business owners to take warranty jobs in the contractors’ own service radius if a customer should need a technician to help them with their unit under their labor coverage. Because the units are sold to the customer by the vendor, whose distribution is not controlled by the manufacturer, there is usually little to no correlation between where the products are sold and whether there are technicians under contract with the manufacturer within the same area, so even though a product is sold in a particular location, the manufacturer may not be able to send a technician, simply due to not having anybody under contract that services that zip code, or otherwise not being able to reach or send the ones that do, due to various circumstances (eg outside their normal service radius, too many customers on their plate at the time, or just plain not answering their phone). In most cases when something like that happens, the company will offer the customer the means to hire their own technician and then submit for reimbursement for the service fee. From what I’ve gathered, most companies that have a need for field technicians function this way, for better or for worse, simply because it’s cheaper and easier for the company to contract independent businesses than it is to employ personnel for a division that only sees occasional use. Why am I telling you this? Because I’m tired of customers acting like it’s our fault that the technician never showed up, or that there wasn’t one available for us to send in the first place. Our influence only extends so far, and while they may be under contract with us, we don’t own them, and so have zero influence on when or where they are available. Yes you should call us back if there is a problem with the technician, but also understand that simply sending a technician in the first place means that there are now three separate parties involved in the situation, two of whom are separate businesses. And this should be a no-brainer, but when the technician does show up, please please PLEASE have the technician call the manufacturer while they are in front of the machine so that we can walk them through our troubleshooting steps and ask them what they find. Telling us “they already left and they said xyz” is not at all helpful to us, because how do we know you didn’t cancel the technician and just make that up on the fly to get a quick fix? How do we know the technician actually said that? How did they come to that conclusion in the first place? What did they do? What did they see? This of course is to prevent people from just calling and asking for free parts or replacing the device for something as simple as not understanding how it functions. Our job is not to give you what you want. Our job is to solve the problem with the unit.
10. All of our calls are recorded. This is something that a lot of customers seem to not realize, even though the recorded message that they hear while on hold explicitly tells them as much (it also explicitly tells them to have their serial number ready, WHICH THEY NEVER DO). So if you say something off-color that makes the agent uncomfortable, or if you threaten the customer, their employer, or the parent company in any way, THAT SHIT GETS RECORDED AND CAN BE PRESENTED IN A COURT OF LAW. It also means that you can’t say one thing and then deny it later in the call, because guess what? We have a recording of you saying the thing that you said, which means you can’t take it back or say that you were lying earlier and that your new story is the truth, because how can we trust that you’re telling the truth now if you didn’t tell us the truth to begin with? This is a major pet peeve of mine. I’ll get a customer who says their unit is having a problem whose nature or circumstances are not covered by the warranty, and then when I tell them as much, they’ll suddenly change their story, thinking they can talk us into giving them what they want. Sorry, but that ain’t happening. We already have you on record as saying A, so if you think you can talk us into believing B, you’re wasting your breath. This is also why it’s important that you give us the CORRECT information the first time we ask for it, because if you feed us false information and then call back later and say that it’s actually something different, we will call you out on that shit.
11. Nobody manually answers phones anymore. Every time someone complains to me about how long it took me to pick up the phone, I want to reach through the line and slap them. All call centers have an automated system that directs the call to the first available agent’s computer. That computer will then answer the call automatically and let the agent know through their headset that the call is coming in and which queue it is coming from, usually about two seconds before the line connects. The agents have zero influence over how quickly your call is answered, because that part of the process is entirely automated. If it does take a long time for your call to reach an agent, it’s usually due to one of two things: they are either experiencing a higher call volume than normal, which means there are more customers ahead of you in the queue, or they are understaffed, meaning that there are fewer people available to take the calls in the first place. Either way, as soon as one call ends, another usually connects, and rarely does it take longer than a few seconds for an agent to receive their next call.
Here’s a short glossary of terms to keep in mind when calling:
Unit: the individual product that you are addressing
Model: the type of product under which the unit is categorized
Part: a specific component of the unit which may be replaceable.
Serial Number: a sequence of digits (often both numbers and letters) that identify the specific individual unit that you are working with. Every unit of every product ever manufactured has a unique serial number that is not shared with any other unit of that product, and so this is the number that the call center agent uses to identify which file to open, and the first thing they ask for when creating a new file. ALL OTHER INFORMATION IS SAVED UNDER THE SERIAL NUMBER. Just because you have provided all of your information during a previous call does not mean they will instantaneously have your information in front of them the next time you call; the registration personnel alone receive a bare minimum of about 84 calls per day, rarely from the same person twice, and do not know you from a hole in the wall, so you must provide the serial number again in order for them to access the file for your unit. And please please PLEASE make sure the serial number you provide pertains to the unit that you actually need help with, because as mentioned above, each individual unit must be registered under its own separate file, and the serial number for a replacement unit will not allow us to access the information for the previous unit, regardless of whether they have the same owner’s info attached to them.
Model Number: a sequence of digits (again usually consisting of both numbers and letters) that identify the type of product that you are working with. Unlike the serial number, which is unique to the individual, the model number is shared among all units in a specific production line. More often than not, the model number will tell the agent various other pieces of information about the unit as well, so that they do not need to ask you for as many details about the product (such as the warranty, size, capacity, etc), which means fewer questions for them to ask. The model number will usually only be requested the first time you are calling about a particular unit, and only after the serial number has been provided. Usually the model number pops up on their screen automatically with the touch of a button, but the agent will ask you to read the number anyway in order to confirm that it matches the one that is attached to the serial number that you have provided. If it doesn’t match, you will be asked to provide the Serial number again, ad nauseum, until it does match. WE CANNOT USE THE MODEL NUMBER TO PULL UP YOUR FILE BECAUSE MORE THAN ONE UNIT HAS THAT MODEL NUMBER.
Part Number: a sequence of digits (again, usually consisting of both letters and numbers that identify to a specific part of the product that you are working with. Similar to a model number, a part number is shared among all individual units of that specific part, but does not say much about the unit as a whole, as multiple models may utilize the same parts. Many appliances are designed to be repaired on the spot, hence the need for part numbers, but if you think we’ll be able to tell which unit you have just from the part number, you are sorely mistaken. More often than not, agents higher up the chain will be able to access a list of all part numbers pertaining to your unit once they have access to your file, so this number is almost never necessary to provide. NO, WE CANNOT JUST SEND YOU A PART BECAUSE YOU HAVE A PART NUMBER WITH YOU. First off, it may not even be the correct part for that unit, and second we still need to know what the actual problem is before we can determine if you even need that part in the first place.
SKU Number: a sequence of digits (usually just numbers, but may occasionally include letters) that the vendor (read: the store where you bought the damn thing) uses to identify the individual product in their database. This number is completely useless to the call center agent and will never be requested over the phone.
Troubleshooting/warranty department: usually used interchangeably, as the person troubleshooting the unit over the phone is required to recognize what is covered under the warranty and what is not. Either way, they are the ones you want to speak to after the unit has been registered, and if they aren’t, they can usually direct you to the ones that are.
Parts department: this department process part orders, both in and out of warranty, but will only speak to a customer directly if the customer wishes to purchase a part out of warranty. If the customer wishes for the part to be sent under their warranty coverage, they need to speak to the person troubleshooting the unit.
Contractors department: This is the department you want to speak to if there is a problem involving a field technician, whether it’s having trouble finding one in the first place, or having problems with one that has been dispatched to the location of the appliance.
Billing department: this is the department responsible for processing your reimbursements. if a reimbursement is necessary, the customer will usually be given specific instructions on what information to send and where to send it. most such info is sent electronically these days, so you will likely not be able to send it via physical mail. Also bear in mind, WE ARE NOT STUPID. If you think you can send us a hastily written MS Office document or handwritten “invoice” and that we’ll give you free money, you will instead receive a templated email and/or letter explaining that your document is invalid and cannot be used. I worked in my company’s voucher department for a time and nothing would bring me more joy than going into miniscule detail in my reply to a fraudulent customer’s email about why their documentation was invalid.
Claims department: This department handles any cases where the customer is seeking reparation for damages caused by the product in question, but you usually won’t get to speak to them until after the unit has been registered and diagnosed. In addition, any cases where a claim has to be filed will require that the appliance remain in its installation location pending further investigation.
Supervisor/Manager: Most of the lower departments are required to strictly adhere to the rules that they have been instructed to follow, else they get in trouble and are required to correct their indiscretion, usually by calling the customer back and explaining that whatever we promised is not actually going to happen and that we need to go through all the steps properly before we can provide anything (this is referred to as a rework). Only the supervisor or manager has the leverage to bend the rules and give you something that we otherwise would not, though they are also required to work within certain limitations. Bear in mind however that they can only help you if you’ve already tried to cooperate with the lower departments and if you think you can just bypass the process by immediately asking to speak to a supervisor and demanding things from them, you will learn very quickly that they have the authority tell you where you can stick it.
I think that about sums it up. Just try to be polite and cooperative to the person you’re talking to and they’ll do their best to help you out.

#Dell venue 8 5830 install idrive drivers#
#Dell venue 8 5830 install idrive driver#
#Dell venue 8 5830 install idrive full#
In order to fully support Windows 10, you should make sure you're running the most recent BIOS version for your Dell Venue model.
#Dell venue 8 5830 install idrive drivers#
A separate internet-connected computer for downloading drivers and Windows installer files.I get these 5-packs of Topsell 16GB USB 2.0 Flash Drives, and use them for this sort of thing all the time. The drive must be at least 5GB in size, and any data currently on the drive will be wiped out because the process of making it a bootable Windows installer involves formatting it.
#Dell venue 8 5830 install idrive driver#
A USB thumb drive big enough to serve as a Windows 10 boot drive, and also for copying some necessary driver files to the tablet before it has access to the internet.A USB mouse, since there will be no touch screen support until after Windows 10 is installed and updated.
#Dell venue 8 5830 install idrive install#
A USB keyboard, since there will be no soft keyboard support during the Windows 10 install process.
I used a StarTech 5-inch Micro USB to USB A On-the-Go Host Cable Adapter.
A USB Type A female to USB Micro male adapter for connecting your USB hub to the tablet.
I can vouch for this D-Link 7-port hub but any solid powered hub should do. It must be a powered hub since the tablet's USB port doesn't provide enough juice for multiple devices.
A powered USB hub with at least three ports for connecting a mouse, keyboard, and thumb drive to your tablet.
Once Windows 10 is fully installed and updated, you don't need any peripherals to use the tablet, but for several reasons, you will need several devices in order to install the operating system and some drivers. You do not want to run out of battery while installing an operating system, so make sure you're fully charged before proceeding. This is really important- you won't be able to power your Venue 8 while installing Windows 10, because you'll need to use your USB port for other things during that time. I do not use Office on the tablet anyway, though, so I didn't really care. Note: While I think my tablet came with a license for Microsoft Office 2013 (version 15.0), I didn't see a product key for it listed in the Belarc report, and I don't know if this is because I never used/activated Office on the tablet or if Belarc Adviser doesn't pick it up. The Software Licenses section of the profile included the product key for my OEM version of Windows 8.1, which is what I used to activate my copy of Windows 10. I used the free program Belarc Advisor to examine my tablet and saved the resulting profile as an HTML profile to my OneDrive account.
#Dell venue 8 5830 install idrive for free#
Even though the Windows 10 free upgrade offer officially ended in 2016, Microsoft quietly still lets licensed Windows 7 and Windows 8 owners upgrade for free with product keys for eligible editions. If your Windows 8.1 user account on the tablet is linked to a Microsoft account, the simplest way to back up those files would be to place them all into OneDrive folders, so they'll be waiting for you once you log into Windows 10 with your Microsoft account. If you keep any unique files on your tablet, be sure to store copies of them. In order to be sure you don't lose anything before doing a fresh OS install, make sure to do the following: My Venue 8 only has 32GB of storage (and of that, only around 25GB is actually available to Windows with the default partitioning scheme), which means that there isn't enough room to do an OS upgrade only a fresh install on a newly-formatted partition.
Every few weeks the tablet would refuse to wake from sleep mode and I'd have to go through an elaborate set of steps to force the thing to do a hard shutdown and power-on.
Windows 8.1 desktop mode sucks on a tablet (no mouse, tiny text, links hard to click, etc).
(There is now a version available for Microsoft Edge.)
At the time there were also no Reddit Enhancement Suite versions available for Windows Store-compatible browsers, and I find Reddit basically unusable without it, so that was another thing keeping me in Desktop mode on my tablet.
At the time, it was also the only browser available on the Windows Store, so I had to use the tablet in Desktop mode in order to run more responsive browsers like Chrome and Firefox.
The "Windows Store" version of Internet Explorer 11 that came with Windows 8.1 was really slow and unbearable to use.
I like the simple, elegant vinyl folio case I bought with it.
It's got a bright, good-looking screen.
#Dell venue 8 5830 install idrive full#
I used the thing almost daily for at least a full year before relegating it to a bookshelf when I won an iPad mini at a company picnic. I originally got my tablet, the Venue 5830 Pro model, at a huge discount when buying a laptop from Dell a few years ago.

If you have NFC or Bluetooth connectivity in your system, you can anyday start using the app & avail its great facilities on your PC. The SHAREit for PChas to be the first on the list as it assures the speediest file sharing between a PC and mobile phone. The great bit is that there is a series of apps today that will help with easy wireless file transfer from PC to Phone. But what if we need our favorite tune while on the go or an important office document for an urgent client meeting? With the use of smartphones gaining momentum lately, it is impossible to part with our mobile devices- and it's only natural that every now and then we would need our important files from PC to our mobile phones. It's true that we have most of our important files stored in our laptop or desktop.
